One of the most prominent features of <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> has always been its beautiful art style. That reputation carried over seamlessly as information about <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> began surfacing last year -- it was clear that the <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/shop/the-art-of-guild-wars-2/">Tyria of the future</a> would be just as gorgeous as the one we know today.<br />
<br />
One of the members of the talented team of artists at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> is <a href="http://www.merekatcreations.com/">Kristen Perry</a>, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> character artist. Even if you don't know it, you're familiar with her work which she began for <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a> with <a href="http://www.guildwars.com/products/factions/default.php"><em>Factions</em></a> armor design, creating the majority of the Kurzick NPC clothing as well as some Ritualist and Assassin armor. In <a href="http://www.guildwars.com/products/nightfall/default.php"><em>Nightfall</em></a>, she designed all of the Elementalist armor as well as the most of the armor for the other professions. She's also responsible for all of Gwen's armor -- even the outfit in the Bonus Mission Pack, and her handiwork can even be seen throughout the game in the character models themselves.<br />
<br />
Kristen's no stranger to Tyria, and designing for <em>Guild Wars 2</em> opened the door for a brand new series of challenges and opportunities to design something completely new. In the <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/the-fashion-of-guild-wars-2-an-interview-with-kristen-perry">latest entry in the ArenaNet blog</a>, she tells all about her latest project. Follow along after the jump to see what she had to say.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/18/guild-wars-2-character-artist-talks-costume-design/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Guild Wars 2 character artist talks costume design</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/18/guild-wars-2-character-artist-talks-costume-design/">Guild Wars 2 character artist talks costume design</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 18 May 2010 09:00:00 EST. </a></div>
At the beginning of October, <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> announced that their annual Halloween art contest was open for entries. After sorting through hundreds of submissions, they <a href="http://www.guildwars.com/events/contests/halloween2009/">announced the winners</a> on Friday. As always, fan creativity shone in the form of costumes, lawn decorations, drawings, carved pumpkins, and even a ceramic siege turtle that fires pumpkins instead of jade.<br />
<br />
ArenaNet seemed very happy with this year's entries: <em>"We were so impressed by both the Halloween spirit and the quality of artistic talent in our community that it was hard to choose only ten winners and ten honorable mentions.</em>"<br />
<br />
Twenty winners were chosen from the submissions for some great prizes. The top three winners scored a signed copy of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/13/win-yourself-a-guild-wars-2-art-book-from-massively/">The Art of <em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>, the top ten received a signed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> art print, and all twenty winners won an exclusive <a href="http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Miniature_Mad_King%27s_Guard">Mad King's Guard minipet</a>. Congratulations to all of the winners!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/02/guild-wars-announces-art-contest-winners/">Guild Wars announces art contest winners</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 02 Nov 2009 09:00:00 EST. After many months of silence, <a href="http://www.vg247.com/2009/09/11/lallier-ncsofts-ps3-mog-is-no-more/">VG247 has pried</a> the news from an NCsoft Europe head has finally revealed that said project has long since been shelved. Apparently, the game was of a casual bent and seemed to hit a brick wall of some kind.<br /><br />While the reason behind the mysterious game's discontinued development may never be known, NCsoft is still interested in console development. And why wouldn't they be? It's a completely -- well, mostly -- untapped market that's just waiting for a company to offer something perfectly suited for it, like say, <em><a href="http://www.apb.com">All Points Bulletin</a></em>. Until that does happen, we'll just have to keep playing all our "massive online games" or whatever you'd like to call them on our personal computrons.<br /><br />[via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/11/ncsoft-europe-head-confirms-ps3-mmo-was-tabled/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/12/ncsoft-ps3-mog-discontinued/">NCsoft PS3 'MOG' discontinued</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 12 Sep 2009 10:00:00 EST. If you're one of those gamers who prefers the digital minimalist approach as opposed to having game boxes everywhere then you're in luck. MMO-giant NCSoft have announced they will be offering their titles -- including <a href="http://massively.com/tags/city-of-heroes"><em>City of Heroes</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.com/tags/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>, and <a href="http://massively.com/tags/lineage"><em>Lineage</em></a> -- via <a href="http://steamgames.com">Steam</a>. They're also planning to offer their latest, most anticipated and shiny MMO, <a href="http://massively.com/tags/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> as well when the game launches later this autumn.<br /><br />The company seem really excited and the press release sent to Massively Towers includes not one but <em>two</em> quotes. <a href="http://us.ncsoft.com/en/">NCSoft</a> are especially keen to note that there will be plenty of special offers on their products via the site and it's a great opportunity for anyone who prefers digital downloading.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/22/ncsoft-adds-its-titles-to-steam/">NCSoft adds its titles to Steam</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 22 Apr 2009 15:30:00 EST. The new openings seem to confirm NCsoft EU's new direction, as all five jobs are either in or related to marketing. <br /><br />The available jobs are:

Not a bad line, but if you're not already able to work in the E.U., you may be out of luck. The site bears this disclaimer: <em>"All of NCsoft Europe's job openings are for full time, on-site employees. We do not employ 'remote' staff. Potential employees must be able to work legally in the United Kingdom, and must either reside near Brighton, England or be willing to relocate. In the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/09/more-ncsoft-layoff-rumors-its-europe-this-time/">continuing saga</a> of <a href="http://www.plaync.com">NCsoft</a>, we get word that their European office in Brighton, UK has just laid off around 70 employees this morning. This new comes straight out of the offices themselves, and a short write-up <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/nc-west-cuts-dow-european-office">over at GamesIndustry.biz</a>. While the details have yet to be confirmed by NCsoft officials, it is said that only a handful of employees remain at the office.<br /><br />All of this news rides on the heels of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/12/rumor-ncsoft-austin-to-be-shut-down/">last year's news</a> regarding NCsoft's first round of layoffs and the closing of <a href="http://www.rgtr.com"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a> later this month. Does this mean an eventual closing of the office completely? Will this affect the development of future NCsoft products such as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>? This week marks an interesting occasion where two former <a href="http://www.plaync.com">NCsoft</a> employees each wrote detailed stories on their own perspectives regarding the sci-fi MMO's downward spiral.<br /><br />First we have <a href="http://t-machine.org/index.php/2009/01/16/we-need-to-talk-about-tabula-rasa-when-will-we-talk-about-tabula-rasa/">this post by Adam Martin</a>, former CTO of <a href="http://eu.plaync.com/eu/">NCsoft Europe</a>, where he explains his views on why the game failed. Granted, he admits he wasn't actually on the <em>TR</em> team, but he was privy to the internal mailing lists and information about the game from Alpha to launch. As a response, we have <a href="http://www.brokentoys.org/2009/01/16/perspectives/">a post from Scott Jennings</a>, who sums it all up fairly well with this statement: <em>"The biggest failing, though, was that it was in development about twice as long and spent twice as much as it had any right to. And that's what promotes it, in this snarky outside blogger's view, from understandable failure to extinction-level company-slaying train wreck."<br /><br /></em>Update: Although Adam Martin's post states that he was the European CTO at the time, we get word from NCsoft that he was never the CTO for NCsoft Europe. He was the Lead Programmer.<em></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/16/opinions-flair-from-ex-ncsoft-employees-about-trs-closing/">Opinions flare from ex-NCsoft employees about TR's closing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 16 Jan 2009 18:00:00 EST. Although <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/20/austin-critically-important-to-ncsoft-says-david-reid/">some key concerns</a> were <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/18/dungeon-runners-is-safe-says-ncsoft/">addressed very swiftly</a>, many of our readers had plenty of questions to ask, and so did we.<br /><br />David Reid, appointed President of Publishing, was kind enough to give up considerable time yesterday for an interview<span style="font-weight: bold;">.</span> We discussed <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/24/ncsoft-very-encouraged-by-guild-wars-2/">Guild Wars</a> </em>and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/24/tabula-rasa-is-triple-a-and-here-to-stay-says-nc-west-president/"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a>, but the main focus was on the NC West announcement.<br style="font-weight: bold;" /><br style="font-weight: bold;" /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Massively:</span> We really do appreciate you guys talking to us, because there are a lot of Massively readers who are concerned with this announcement. It was kind of sudden - the NCsoft West thing just kind of snuck up on them, and they're not entirely sure about what's going on. Although you guys have put out a couple of statements so far about it, I think people are still a little unclear on it. <br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">David Reid:</span> That's exactly why we are keen to talk with you. Let us be clear about whatever questions your readers have, and set things straight on that. <br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Massively: </span>Great! As a broad question: NC West sounds like (to us, and we want to make sure we have this clear) a conglomeration of the game development assets for NCsoft in the US, into a smaller number of groups than it is right now. Is that the primary goal?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/24/david-reid-sets-the-record-straight-on-nc-west/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>David Reid sets the record straight on NC West</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/24/david-reid-sets-the-record-straight-on-nc-west/">David Reid sets the record straight on NC West</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 24 Sep 2008 15:30:00 EST. The job losses at NC Europe are not yet tallied, with reports varying from 50 to 70 employees, but we can confirm, with great personal sadness, that <a href="http://totheblogmobile.com/">Stephen 'Rockjaw' Reid is one of those affected</a>. Last night, <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz">gamesindustry.biz</a> broke a double rumor: that NCsoft Europe would be shedding staff (not closing altogether, as is being reported elsewhere) and that <a href="http://www.rgtr.com"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a> would be closing shortly. While we have received no official comment as yet on the alleged job losses, we are delighted to report that NCsoft staff member 'Ziggidy Zaggidy' has stated outright over on <a href="http://www.planettr.com">planettr.com</a> that <a href="http://www.planettr.com/forums/showpost.php?p=113852&amp;postcount=23">there are '<em>no current plans</em></a><em> to can <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tabula-rasa">Tabula Rasa</a></em>'.<br /><br />We should also add here that contrary to the claim at gamesindustry.biz (repeated by us) that '<em>speculation that Tabula Rasa was to be discontinued wasn't addressed</em>' last time similar rumors circulated, <a href="http://www.planettr.com/forums/showpost.php?p=106317&amp;postcount=118">the NCsoft staff did actually state</a> that the Austin studio changes would not affect <em>Tabula Rasa</em>. We apologise for not refuting the gamesindustry.biz claim sooner.<br /><br />It seems the rumors of job losses are at least partly accurate: <a href="http://www.planettr.com/forums/showpost.php?p=113864&amp;postcount=33">poster CMGangrel on planettr.com</a> has confirmed this. However, to put the job loss rumors into perspective, we would remind readers that the original source for this particular rumor - <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/ncsoft-to-trim-european-office">an article at gamesindustry.biz</a> - referred to the loss of only 50 jobs. According to <a href="http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6179883.html">information from September last year</a>, NCsoft Europe had originally employed 112 staff, and then went on to employ over 100 more when the company expanded. A loss of 50 jobs would, therefore, not amount to studio closure by a long chalk.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/10/no-current-plans-to-can-tabula-rasa-says-dev/">'No current plans to can Tabula Rasa' says dev</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 10 Sep 2008 11:30:00 EST. According to the report, '<em>a number of sources close to the company</em>' have stated that about 50 positions would be lost, following a decision to cancel an as-yet <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/04/whats-ncsoft-europe-working-on/">unnamed MMO project</a>, presumably that for which <a href="http://www.ncestudio.co.uk/en/games/concept_art">some concept art</a> had already appeared.<br /><br />The report also makes a claim that will undoubtedly have <a href="http://www.rgtr.com"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a> fans up in arms: '<em>It is also thought that the company's troubled MMO Tabula Rasa will be discontinued at some point in the coming months due to continuing poor subscriber numbers.</em>' As devotees of the game will know, this isn't the first time rumors have surfaced concerning the future of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tabula-rasa"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a>. Last time around, those rumors weren't ever addressed. <em>Tabula Rasa</em> players have been working hard to encourage new players to try the game, and we hope for their sake that <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/ncsoft-to-trim-european-office">this latest report</a> is inaccurate.<br /><br />Last time rumors circulated about an NCsoft office being under threat, the reality - <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/13/official-word-from-ncsoft-on-the-austin-studio-layoffs/">though unpleasant</a> - turned out to be substantially less severe than reports had anticipated. An official comment from NCsoft is expected within the next 24 hours; we'll be watching for any news.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/09/more-ncsoft-layoff-rumors-its-europe-this-time/">More NCsoft layoff rumors: it's Europe this time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 09 Sep 2008 18:30:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.gc-germany.com/index.php?lang=2">Leipzig Games Convention</a> is a major event for gamers, not only in Europe, but globally. It's often called one of the largest and most prestigious gaming conventions in the world. So it should be no surprise that the <a href="http://eu.plaync.com/eu/">NCsoft Europe</a> team is gearing up for this event in true NCsoft style. <br /><br />Their new mini "web-isode" video series entitled <a href="http://totheblogmobile.com/2008/07/15/the-journey-towards-games-convention/"><em>Quest for GC</em></a> follows the NCsoft Europe staff as they prepare for this gigantic event. Each episode is highly entertaining and stars some of your favorites from the community team, such as Tia "Avatea" Paraurahi and Stephen "Rockjaw" Reid. Be sure to start from the beginning and watch all four current episodes, plus stay tuned to their <a href="http://itpc://ncsofteurope.blip.tv/rss/itunes/">iTunes RSS feed</a> to catch upcoming videos.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/quest-for-games-convention-ncsoft-eus-own-video-series/">Quest for Games Convention: NCsoft EU's own video series</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 28 Jul 2008 09:00:00 EST. At the <a href="http://www.gc-germany.com/index.php?page=64">Leipzig Games Convention</a> this year, <a href="http://eu.rgtr.com">NCsoft</a> plans on doing more than just showing up and being awesome. They have quite a party planned for any fans of their products, and the best part is it's all free! There will be music with your chance to be a DJ playing the tunes of your choice for 20 minutes, and there will also be karaoke at the first ever NCsoft Fansites Karaoke Battle.<br /><br />The party will be held at Leipzig's <a href="http://www.nachtcafe.com/">Nachtcafe</a> on the 22nd of August at 22:00 local time. In order to get in free, you will need to bring along the party flyer, grab one from the show floor or wear a t-shirt from any NCsoft game. Be sure to read <a href="http://eu.rgtr.com/en/news/news_article/nc_communityparty_gc08">the official announcement</a> for more information.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/ncsoft-is-throwing-a-free-party-in-leipzig-and-youre-invited/">NCsoft is throwing a free party in Leipzig, and you're invited!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 Jul 2008 17:30:00 EST. NCsoft is taking a whirlwind summer tour across the Globe. First stop is in San Diego, California at <a href="http://www.comic-con.org/">Comic-Con</a> where games, geeks, and comics will collide on July 23-27. The NCsoft booth (#5920) will feature game stations set up for attendees to play <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/"><span style="font-style: italic;">CoX</span></a>, <a href="http://www.exteel.com/us/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Exteel</span></a>, <a href="http://www.rgtr.com/index.html"><span style="font-style: italic;">Tabula Rasa</span></a> and other NCsoft games. Also <span style="font-style: italic;">City of Heroes</span> fanzine artist, Dave Hamann will be present to draw character sketches. <br /><br />In Europe, during July 29-31 <a href="http://www.aiononline.com/us/"><em>Aion: Tower of Eternity</em></a> will be playable to western journalists. This will be the first time in a year since the last firsthand look took place. NCsoft Europe is hosting the event at their Brighton England, locale and this is a select press event. Attendants there will find a special surprise in Hall 3 Booth B20, <span style="font-style: italic;">Aion</span> will be setup on several demo kiosks for the public to play, the first time outside South Korea.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/13/ncsoft-s-upcoming-summer-tour-around-the-globe/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NCsoft's upcoming summer tour around the Globe</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/13/ncsoft-s-upcoming-summer-tour-around-the-globe/">NCsoft's upcoming summer tour around the Globe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 13 Jul 2008 21:00:00 EST. Avatea, <a href="http://eu.plaync.com/eu/">NCsoft Europe</a>'s Community Team Lead for <a href="http://www.rgtr.com"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a> hosts this show while interviewing three of the main developers for the game: Producer Starr Long, Lead Designer Tom Potter and Art Director Victor Meinert. Luckily for those of us <a href="http://totheblogmobile.com">Rockjaw</a> fans out there, he is not completely left out of this one!<br /><br />This 40-minute show gets into the minds of these developers, and lets us know a bit more about what it's like to work at <a href="http://www.plaync.com/us/">Destination Games</a>, their visions for the future of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tabula-rasa/">Tabula Rasa</a></em>, the importance of player feedback and much more. We even get a glimpse into the crazy <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=gLeI-V9h6EY">practical jokes</a> the team has played on each other! So give it a listen and don't forget to follow along with the complete episode transcription.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/21/the-third-ncsoft-europe-podcast-focuses-on-tabula-rasa/">The third NCsoft Europe podcast focuses on Tabula Rasa</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 21 Jun 2008 08:30:00 EST. How often do you get the opportunity to ask a big-time developer a question and actually <em>hear</em> their answer? Unless you travel to a <a href="http://www.pennyarcadeexpo.com/">gaming conference</a> and stand in line for an hour, this isn't likely to happen, but on the next episode of <a href="http://www.tabulacast.com">TabulaCast</a>, the hosts John and Matt will be interviewing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/22/an-interview-with-trs-lead-designer-tom-potter/">Tom Potter</a>, the leader designer for <a href="http://www.rgtr.com"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a>. They will be asking him questions submitted by the listeners regarding the game and his new role in the lead designer seat after taking over for Paul Sage last month. Of course, not all questions will be on the show, but only the very best will be chosen. <br /><br />This is a very exciting interview for the folks at TabulaCast who have previously interviewed some of the "leaders" in the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tabula-rasa/">Tabula Rasa</a></em> player community including <a href="http://www.planettr.com">PlanetTR</a>'s main admin <a href="http://www.planettr.com/forums/member.php?find=lastposter&amp;f=108">DeadRinger</a>, <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/tr">Ten Ton Hammer's TR</a> lead Tony "Radar X" Jones as well as both Community Coordinators: Amy "Critters" Crider and Tia "Avatea" from <a href="http://eu.plaync.com/eu/">NCsoft Europe</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/18/trs-lead-designer-answers-your-questions/">TR's lead designer answers your questions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 18 Jun 2008 18:30:00 EST. Tabula Blogger recently got to take a trip to NCsoft Europe headquarters and meet the fine folks who make up the <em><a href="http://www.playtr.com">Tabula Rasa</a></em> Europe team. It sounds like things went exceedingly well, as Tabula Blogger had all good things to say about their experience. You can read all the crazy exploits of the trip <a href="http://www.gaxonline.com/profiles/blog/show?id=1511077%3ABlogPost%3A153862">on this page</a> and as an added bonus get to see some pretty cool sketch art. It also sounds like the<em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tabula-rasa">Tabula Rasa</a></em> Europe team has some very nice digs with a working space that includes a big TV, PS3 and some Rock Band action. What more could any geek ask for?<br /><br />We always love to see players in the community having these kinds of experiences with the people responsible for the live support and development of an MMO. If you've been following <a href="http://www.plaync.co.uk">NCsoft Europe</a> around lately, you'll notice they've been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/29/ncsoft-europes-ultimate-heroic-weekend/">attending a ton of conferences</a> and keeping fairly busy with charitable events as well. This coming weekend is no exception, as they'll be participating in the <a href="http://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk/">UK Games Expo 2008</a> event in Birmingham, after just returning from Bristol's <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ncsofteurope/sets/72157605019051375/">Comicexpo</a>. Also, with them once again are the artists from <a href="http://drawtheworldtogether.wordpress.com/welcome/">Draw the World Together</a>, a charity formed to help children in developing third-world countries.<br /><br />During this coming event, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft/">NCsoft</a> will be joined by <a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/">Games Workshop</a> artist Karl Kopinski. You may have seen Karl's amazing work if you're a <em><a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/landing.jsp?catId=cat210002">Warhammer</a> </em>fan, or if you've checked out <a href="http://www.karlkopinski.com/">his personal site</a> itself. He will be appearing at the UK Games Expo 2008 on Saturday only, so if you'd like to have your character drawn by him, you better get there early!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/25/uk-games-expo-2008-announces-new-artist-for-charity-event/">UK Games Expo 2008 announces new artist for charity event</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 25 May 2008 13:00:00 EST. This new episode follows up on the wildly successful <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/28/massively-event-coverage-the-ncsoft-europe-heroic-weekend/">MiniCon</a>, focusing on the aftermath of the mammoth <a href="http://www.coh.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> playing event, Task Force Omega. Who were the contestants, how did they survive, and who ultimately emerged triumphant? <br /><br />NCSoft Europe have been highly active in the events field lately, with their <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/17/ncsoft-europe-continue-charity-work-at-uk-comics-expo/">appearance at the Comics Expo in Bristol, UK bringing in major bucks for charity</a>. The next major event in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft-europe">NCSoft Europe</a> calendar will be the <a href="http://eu.plaync.com/eu/news/article/bring_your_character_to_life_with_ncsoft_at_the_uk_games_expo/">UK Games Expo</a> on May 31st and June 1st. Once again, you'll be able to get a favorite character sketched courtesy of the artists from the <a href="http://drawtheworldtogether.wordpress.com/">Draw the World Together</a> project. For the first time, they'll also be selling copies of the DTWT sketchbook, filled with images of the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cox">CoX</a></em> heroes and villains!<br /><br /><a href="http://eu.plaync.com/eu/news/stream/episode_2b/">Listen to the podcast online</a>, or if you prefer, <a href="http://eu.plaync.com/eu/images/podcasts/002b/NCsoft_Podcast_Episode_IIb_-_The_Podcast_Wars.mp3">download it and save it for later.</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/24/new-official-ncsoft-europe-podcast-online/">New official NCSoft Europe podcast online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 24 May 2008 09:00:00 EST. <a href="http://eu.plaync.com/eu/">NCsoft Europe</a> announced that it has<a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/ncsoft-announces-new-mmo-starter-packs"> begun selling</a> in the U.K. what it calls "starter packs" for some of its games - <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/"><em>City of Heroes</em>,</a> <a href="http://www.cityofvillains.com/"><em>City of Villains</em>,</a> <a href="http://www.guildwars.com/"><em>Guild Wars</em>,</a> and <a href="http://www.lineage2.com/"><em>Lineage II</em>.</a> <a href="http://www.rgtr.com/index.html"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a> will follow later in the year. The packs cost &pound;1.99 at retail, and come with all game content plus a two week trial subscription period, encouraging players to return to buy the game at retail when the period ends.<br /><br />This is essentially your standard 14-day trial -- a staple in the industry -- made available through retail for would-be subscribers who might not come across such opportunities on the web. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> hopes that this move will net some new customers -- especially for its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/tabula-rasa-down-in-the-dumps/">struggling properties.</a><br /><br />"In an ever increasingly digitally orientated retail environment, encouraging players to return to retail is a win-win for both outlet and publisher," said an NCsoft rep. We had heard that the whole digital download thing <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2008/04/18/thq-exec-pc-gaming-is-transforming/">could be the saving grace</a> of the PC platform, but whatever!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/15/ncsoft-begins-selling-14-day-mmo-trials-at-retail/">NCsoft begins selling 14-day MMO trials at retail</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 15 May 2008 07:00:00 EST. In an interview with the Develop magazine site, company creative director Marc D'Souza offers hope for future titles that don't simply "redress" <em><a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com">World of Warcraft</a></em>'s gameplay. While the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> developers greatly respect <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a>'s behemoth, they're looking to offer a very different alternative. <br /><br /><em>"To maximize your potential, you really need to work from first principles. If you only copy what other people are doing, then you're not going to understand the choices and compromises that were made from a design point of view."</em> It's clear the company has a good grasp of what's 'in play' at the moment. Avoiding previous pitfall while charting new territory is what innovation is all about.<br /><br />The interview also covers the social challenges to MMO developers in the form of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/griefing/">griefing</a>, as well as some thoughts on the art vs. graphics debate. From all accounts, it was quite the bash, and next year's event is not to be missed!<br /><br />Additionally, there is an interview with Melissa 'War Witch' Bianco, one of the more famous developers from <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes/">City of Heroes</a></em> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-villains/">City of Villains</a></em>, recorded during the final days of the event. Hosted by Stephen 'Rockjaw' Reid, the podcast is a worthwhile listen, especially if you're a fan of <em>CoX</em>. If you could have any birthday wish, what would it be? Would it involve something extra special like an in-game event in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tabula-rasa/">Tabula Rasa</a></em>? How about if the <a href="http://eu.plaync.com">NCsoft</a> European Community Coordinator showed up too? And what if she spawned countless high level Bane within Foreas Base for you and your friends to have their own special shooting gallery within a safe zone? It sure beats <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pin_the_Tail_on_the_Donkey">Pin the Tail on the Donkey</a>!<br /><br />How many MMOs do you know that would do something like this for a fansite owner? I'm sure you could count them on one hand, but even in an unofficial appearance, it was extremely generous of <a href="http://www.gaxonline.com/profile/Avatea">Avatea</a> to attend this small event for John, the owner of <a href="http://www.gaxonline.com/profile/TabulaBlogger">Tabula Blogger</a>. Be sure to check out Tabula Blogger's post concerning more information on the event, including screenshots and an exciting video of the party-goers taking down some high-level Bane inside the base!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/16/tabula-bloggers-birthday-bash/">Tabula Blogger's birthday bash</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 16 Apr 2008 20:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.plaync.com"> NCsoft</a> certainly doesn't mess around when it comes to combating the use of illegal servers and copies of their games. Dating back to 2006, the company has a proven record of fighting those companies and individuals who insist on stealing their intellectual properties. Many of these cases, in cooperation with the FBI, have led to the shut-down of companies such as <a href="http://72.32.58.190/">L2extreme</a> which claimed to run as many as 50,000 fraudulent <a href="http://eu.plaync.com/eu/games/overview/lineage_ii">Lineage II</a> users on their servers.<br /><br />Currently, <a href="http://eu.plaync.com/eu/">NCsoft Europe</a> is taking action against many Eastern European corporations which are deemed to be in breach of international copyright laws. This includes a recent court order against the Greek company e-Global following several raids unveiling illegal software usage on their net cafe servers.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/12/ncsoft-fights-back-against-software-piracy/">NCsoft fights back against software piracy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 12 Apr 2008 13:00:00 EST. <span style="font-style: italic;">This column comes to us from our new blogger, Adrian Bott, reporting in from the field. Adrian is joining our team as a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes/">City of Heroes</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-villains/">City of Villains</a> <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">fanboy</span> aficionado extraordinaire, so keep an eye out for even more in-depth <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cox">CoX</a> coverage here at Massively!</span> <br /><br /> "I cannot believe how polished this event is," confided visiting <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/City-of-Heroes/">City of Heroes</a></em> developer Melissa 'War Witch' Bianco, during a lull in the frenzy. Nor could we. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/NCSoft/">NCsoft</a> Europe knows how to throw a party.<br /><br />As we crossed from the gloomy streets of central Birmingham into the blazing techno-sanctuary of <a href="http://www.omega-sektor.com">Omega Sektor</a>, the professionalism and sheer hard graft of the NCsoft team gleamed from every splash-panel surface. Amid the sounds of hordes of happy Super Group members meeting up in the flesh for the first time, video screens showing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/25/ncsofts-ultimate-heroic-weekend/">looped footage of NCsoft games</a>, and the wibbles and whoops of more than four hundred individual PCs, we struggled through to the admin desk. <br /><br />The organizers and their blue-shirted 'sidekicks', buoyed up by who knows what inhuman energy source (they had already been doing this for two days and showed no signs of flagging) gave us the rundown. There were <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PvP/">PvP</a> events, task force challenges, 'death races' and sundry other in-game activities. And huge, padded, Gladiator style superhero suits for real-life PvP. Seriously.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/28/massively-event-coverage-the-ncsoft-europe-heroic-weekend/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively Event Coverage: The NCsoft Europe Heroic Weekend</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/28/massively-event-coverage-the-ncsoft-europe-heroic-weekend/">Massively Event Coverage: The NCsoft Europe Heroic Weekend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 28 Mar 2008 09:00:00 EST. <a href="http://eu.plaync.com/eu/news/stream/episode_1/">NCsoft Europe launched its first official podcast today</a>, and it's full of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes/">City of Heroes</a></em> goodness. Why should us Yanks bother?<br /><br />Sure, in the inaugural episode Stephen Reid ("Rockjaw" from the <em>CoH</em> EU forums) talks about an upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/29/ncsoft-europes-ultimate-heroic-weekend/">European community event </a>(happening in Birmingham, UK, March 2st-24th), but he also chats with Matt "Positron" Miller (Lead Designer of <em><a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com">City of Heroes</a></em>), and gets the scoop on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/14/iconic-bliss-cox-valentines-day-event/">Manticore and Sister Psyche's wedding</a> from none other then the real life couple behind the heroes themselves, Sean and Jen Dornan-Fish. Sean is the Lead Content Designer on several unannounced NCsoft projects, and works on <em>CoH</em> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/exteel/"><em>Exteel</em></a>. UK residents, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> loves you! Starting at 8 PM on Friday, March 21st, and continuing until 8 PM on Monday, March 24th in the capacious <a href="http://www.omega-sektor.com/">Omega Sektor</a> in Birmingham, the UHW will challenge and satisfy gamers of all types with a veritable cornucopia of superhero-related joy.<br /><br />Similar to their <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/24/ncsofts-memorabilia-winter-presence/">recent convention</a>, yet much more -- dare we say -- <em>massive</em>, the fun all starts on Friday with a meet and greet with Melissa 'War Witch' Bianco, who will remain for the entire weekend and provide details on the upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> expansion, Issue 12! There will also be prizes for Best Heroic Costume and PC and console gaming until midnight.<br /><br />And the event truly kicks off with a bang on Saturday ...<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/29/ncsoft-europes-ultimate-heroic-weekend/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NCsoft Europe's Ultimate Heroic Weekend!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/29/ncsoft-europes-ultimate-heroic-weekend/">NCsoft Europe's Ultimate Heroic Weekend!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 29 Feb 2008 15:15:00 EST. <br /><a href="http://eu.plaync.com/eu/news/article/work_in_the_games_industry">NCsoft Europe</a>, after announcing that they're <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/04/whats-ncsoft-europe-working-on/">looking for employees</a> for an as-yet unannounced new title, have stepped up again with good news for those game enthusiasts eager to break into the industry: they're hiring for a full-time, year-long game <a href="http://eu.plaync.com/eu/news/article/work_in_the_games_industry">tester position</a> (open to UK residents only -- near Brighton, England, to be specific -- sorry, Tennessee). From the website:<br /><br />"The position offers learning whilst at work and block release learning at City College Brighton and Hove, resulting in a Games QA NVQ. Applicants should be IT literate and have Maths and English at GCSE grade C or above. Interviews will be held early February, with the lucky candidate starting 3 March."<br /><br />For more information, check out the listing on their site. This is a pretty quick hiring window; given that, and the fact that it's a tester position makes me wonder <em>exactly</em> how far along this mystery title is in development, if testers are already needed. Of course, they're just hiring <strong>one</strong> tester so far, so I'm flummoxed. We'll keep track of further developments as they occur!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/24/more-ncsoft-hiring-news-but-for-what-for-what/">More NCsoft hiring news, but for what? However, when one does strike something valuable, it makes it all worthwhile. To wit: NCsoft Europe is on a <a href="http://eu.plaync.com/eu/jobs/">hiring spree</a> for a previously-unannounced project! <br /><br />In fact, it gets better. Looking at <a href="http://www.ncestudio.co.uk/">NCE's website</a> gives us a <a href="http://www.ncestudio.co.uk/en/games/concept_art">page of concept art</a> that seems to indicate a science fiction/<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starship_Trooper">Starship Troopers</a>-esque military title with a slight mystical leaning. This is big! NCsoft is a -- forgive me -- <em>massively</em> prolific studio, with no less than <strong>seven</strong> MMOs under their belts. Can no one stop their madness? Do we really want to? No! Keep 'em coming!<br /><br />We'll keep on top of this as more develops!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/04/whats-ncsoft-europe-working-on/">What's NCSoft Europe working on?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 04 Jan 2008 14:45:00 EST.
