Have you ever wondered where to invest your savings for the future? Have you thought about the MMO market? Apparently, multimedia companies like Time Warner, NBC Universal, and Bertelsmann believe it is worth their money. These three media giants have invested over $100 million into Trion Worlds, the top-tier gaming company featuring upcoming MMOs like Rift: Planes of Telara and End of Nations.

Yesterday, Trion's CEO Lars Buttler was featured on Bloomberg's CEO Sitdown. In the interview, Buttler mentioned the role that games, specifically MMO games, will play in the future economy. "This is actually one of the fastest-growing segments of the games industry. And there are markets like Korea or China where you can see what a massive potential these online premium games already have," Buttler explains in the video. As MMOs become more mainstream, the media industry is beginning to see them as a viable form of entertainment. They are not just pretend fun for teenage boys anymore. Buttler expounds later, "It's really once-a-gamer-always-a-gamer, so as people get older they stay with their favorite game types." The industry is constantly growing because the audience sticks to its favorite form of entertainment.

Our sister site WoW Insider picked up on The Guild star's next step into mass media consciousness. Conan O' Brien's Late Night successor, Jimmy Fallon, recently did a video for NBC with Felicia Day about World of Warcraft. The video starts off as an interview of sorts, but eventually depicts Fallon's painfully noobish (but pretty funny) attempts to get into WoW, but we suppose that he's mostly trying to get a rise out of people. Still, we suspect that Fallon may pull aggro from some of the more dedicated WoW players out there.

Even if it's done with comedic overtones, it's interesting to see MMOs becoming increasingly part of mainstream media and entertainment. Obviously, it's generally WoW that makes the leap from gamer subculture to the all-encompassing spotlight of major TV networks, but do you think any other MMO out there could potentially hold such broad appeal? USA Network and the SCI FI Channel are getting ready for a blitz of online games coming their way from Bigpoint. Peacock Equity Fund, which includes NBC Universal, recently bought a majority stake in the German game producer and are planning to distribute their browser-based, free-to-play titles on network sites.

Previously planned titles, including a game based on the hit series Next Top Model, are still in the works. Bigpoint is also expanding across Europe through partnerships with MTV Networks International to promote their 26 browser games to users in nearly a dozen countries. They also offer a handful of downloadable games and a veritable plethora of mini games to over 43 million registered users.

The 2008 Worlds in Motion Summit schedule has been announced, along with a synopsis of this year's speeches and panels. The conference on virtual worlds and social gaming will be held on September 16th and 17th, during the Austin Game Developers Conference.

Worlds in Motion bills the 2008 Summit as a conference geared toward those who wish to better understand the business opportunities offered in the expanding social game networking space, and who plan to leverage their content and brands into interactive online worlds. There's a video up on NBC's site about Second Life, but not only isn't it saying anything new, there are a couple of weird bits about it.

First, the reporter assigned to the story narrates, explaining that an SL avatar ' ... can walk, talk, and fly through the Web.' Fly through the Web? Did this guy even understand what was going on? I mean, watch the video: does that look like the Web to you?

Second, immediately after that line, we get a short bit of Philip Linden talking about SL, but his name never appears, nor his title. This is followed with a second tiny bit with someone else who isn't named.

Finally, what I assume is meant to be a wrap-up to the piece has 'Britney' in the middle of saying something; his mouth moves, no sound is heard, and it fades unceremoniously out. I don't think there's any editorializing going on here. It just seems really sloppy, and not befitting a major news source.

As fans of NBC's hit 'The Office' are probably well aware, last Thursday's episode "The Ad" gave a fair bit of screen time to Second Life. Games don't usually get a terribly fair treatment in popular media, as writers tend to perpetuate popular stereotypes about players as unsociable, unhealthy, or both for the sake of making an easy joke.

And while we have to concede that The Office's take on Second Life did focus on the escapism for which many people play the game, the punchlines were in all the right places. (See: Dwight's Second Life character playing an MMO within the MMO, to help escape further.) Check out the full episode on NBC's website, it's a good one.
