Is gaming the answer to the math- and science-related apathy plaguing American school kids? Some folks at MIT think so, and a new press blurb outlines how the institute is <a href="http://education.mit.edu/blogs/louisa/2012/pressrelease">developing an MMO </a>designed to further science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education.<br />
<br />
"In contrast to the way that (STEM) is currently taught in secondary schools -- which often results in students becoming disengaged and disinterested in the subjects at an early age -- educational games like the one to be developed give students the chance to explore STEM topics in a way that deepens their knowledge while also developing 21st-century skills," the release says.<br />
<br />
The title is being developed in collaboration with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/filament-games">Filament Games</a>, and MIT's Eric Klopfer says that it will be a powerful educational tool. "This genre of games is uniquely suited to teaching the nature of science inquiry," he explains, "because they provide collaborative, self-directed learning situations. Players take on the roles of scientists, engineers and mathematicians to explore and explain a robust virtual world." The project is being financed by a $3 million grant from the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/22/mit-developing-educational-mmo-funded-by-gates-foundation/">MIT developing educational MMO funded by Gates Foundation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 22 Jan 2012 16:00:00 EST. Namely, how the game might expand by <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/api/doc/">leveraging the <em>EVE</em> API</a>. It looks like CCP is taking the next step in making this happen, from the <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=960122">announcement an <em>EVE</em> player came across</a> -- one that suggests mobile and iPhone applications for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> may be coming. <br /><br /><a href="http://ru.is/?PageID=723">Reykjavik University</a> and <a href="http://www.mit.edu/">MIT</a> maintain cooperation through the <a href="http://ilp-www.mit.edu/display_page.a4d?key=H1">MIT Industrial Liaison Program</a> (ILP), which is essentially a way to tap the expertise of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for specific projects. An announcement on the ILP site states that CCP Games is interested in seeing what MIT students can come up with in terms of <em>EVE</em> mobile and iPhone applications that make use of <em>EVE Online</em>'s API.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/30/ccp-games-aims-to-extend-eve-online-to-iphone-and-mobile-phones/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CCP Games aims to extend EVE Online to iPhone and mobile phones</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/30/ccp-games-aims-to-extend-eve-online-to-iphone-and-mobile-phones/">CCP Games aims to extend EVE Online to iPhone and mobile phones</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 30 Dec 2008 20:00:00 EST. <p>MIT Media Lab's Eric Rosenbaum has produced a wonderful little tool called Scratch for <a href="http://secondlife.com/"><em>Second Life</em></a> (S4SL). Available for Mac or Windows (but not Linux at present, alas) S4SL allows you to create scripts by assembling simple colorful shapes (a bit like plastic bricks).</p>
<p>S4SL is based on MIT's <a href="http://scratch.mit.edu/"><em>Scratch</em></a>, and allows you to put together some useful functionality very simply. S4SL isn't going to make you a star creator of scripts overnight, though -- anyone who knows <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life">Second Life's</a></em> LSL scripting language and has a modicum of programming skill can do much more, but that's not the point here.<br /></p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/tools-of-the-trade-scratch-for-sl/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tools of the trade: Scratch for SL</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/tools-of-the-trade-scratch-for-sl/">Tools of the trade: Scratch for SL</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 14 Jul 2008 11:30:00 EST. <br />As reported <a href="http://slurl.com/secondlife/Millions%20of%20Us/152/125/23/">here</a>, today saw the meeting of minds between <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life">Second Life</a></em>'s <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_Linden">Philip Rosedale</a> (aka Philip Linden) and San Francisco Mayor <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavin_Newsom">Gavin Newsom</a> at the <a href="http://slurl.com/secondlife/Millions%20of%20Us/152/125/24">New Globe Theater</a>, a meeting held and sponsored by <a href="http://www.millionsofus.com/">Millions of Us</a>, a metaverse development company (MDC), with Reuben Millionsofus as moderator. This is the mp3 and transcript of part one of the chat. I have chosen to edit out of the transcript, for the most part, verbal tics that don't contribute to the content of the chat, but these elements remain in the mp3. If you're unfamiliar with <em>Second Life</em>, every now and then you'll hear what sounds like a Polaroid camera going off -- this is the sound of in-world snapshots being taken of the proceedings. You will also hear typing sounds from time to time -- this is the default typing animation sound.<br /><br />Part two will go up tomorrow at this time. Enjoy!<br /><br />[<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/podcasts/fireside_chat_part_1.mp3">Mp3</a>] Download the MP3 directly<br /><br />[Thanks, Celebrity!]<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/09/the-second-life-philip-linden-gavin-newsom-fireside-chat-part-1/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Second Life Philip Linden/Gavin Newsom Fireside Chat, Part 1</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/09/the-second-life-philip-linden-gavin-newsom-fireside-chat-part-1/">The Second Life Philip Linden/Gavin Newsom Fireside Chat, Part 1</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 09 Jan 2008 10:00:00 EST.
