Back in September, <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Daniel-Stahl/">Daniel Stahl</a> gave an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/24/star-trek-online-producer-states-current-game-ratings-dont-do-t/">interview</a> that proposed to tell game journalists how to do their jobs. That's only fair; we're always telling developers how to do their jobs, right? Stahl told <a href="http://www.thealistdaily.com/news/exclusive-star-trek-online-interview-hits-warp-2/">[a]listdaily</a>,
<blockquote class="bq-standard">
	"The whole game rating business doesn't necessarily do a great justice to MMOs. MMOs are designed to grow over time and get better with every major release. It might be better if sites like Metacritic could find a way to rate MMOs by releases instead of just the initial day one . . . There are plenty of MMOs that have made huge strides since day one and some that have even gotten worse. Until then, we will continue to offer the game for free and ask for people to try it out and decide for themselves."</blockquote>

Well-known <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> guild Method secured a world first kill on <a href="http://diablo3.com/"><em>Diablo III</em></a>'s Skeleton King in inferno mode just a few days after launch but was beaten to the game's completion by a single person. Players have been in outrage all week as server instabilities and login difficulties plagued the game's launch.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://leagueoflegends.com/"><em>League of Legends</em></a> revealed upcoming champion Darius this week and announced huge client updates that seem set to double the game's frame rate. <a href="http://blacklight.perfectworld.com/"><em>Blacklight: Retribution</em></a> released a new Netwar game mode, combining capture the flag and control point gameplay. <a href="http://heroesofnewerth.com/"><em>Heroes of Newerth</em></a> released its new support hero Riftwalker, <a href="http://dota2.com/"><em>Dota 2</em></a> released classic hero Treant, and <a href="http://riseofimmortals.com/"><em>Rise of Immortals</em></a> took a close look at melee damage-dealer Tzai. Upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/MOBA/"><em>MOBA</em></a> <a href="https://account.hirezstudios.com/smitegame/"><em>Smite</em></a> will be entering closed beta at the end of the month, and <a href="http://www.torchlight2game.com/"><em>Torchlight II</em></a>'s beta will soon end for the last time.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/not-so-massively-error-37-hero-spotlights-and-the-torchlight/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Not So Massively: Error 37, hero spotlights, and the Torchlight II beta</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/not-so-massively-error-37-hero-spotlights-and-the-torchlight/">Not So Massively: Error 37, hero spotlights, and the Torchlight II beta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 May 2012 20:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> Game Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/james-ohlen/">James Ohlen</a> isn't surprised that the game's received the flak it has from a segment of reviews and fans. In a candid interview with <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-01-12-bioware-swtor-post-mortem-its-more-innovative-than-an-fps">Eurogamer</a>, Ohlen addresses both the issues of being a "big target" for critics and the claims that <em>SWTOR's </em>lacking innovation.<br />
<br />
For the most part, players and critics have praised the game, Ohlen shares, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware/">BioWare</a> is seeing an "exceptionally high" desire among its playerbase for continued subscriptions. But was BioWare prepared for the backlash as well? Ohlen says it was: "We knew that there was going to be people who wanted us to fail. But that's just the nature of the game. If you're going to build a huge game and try to go out to a lot of people, you're going to have people who just react poorly."<br />
<br />
He does push back hard against claims that <em>SWTOR </em>failed on the innovation front, stating, "We wanted to take the lessons that have been developed in that genre over years and years and years and basically refine them, much like other companies do with other genres. So, I don't know, it's just the way it is, but I don't see us as not being innovative. We're actually a lot more innovative within the MMO space than comparable games in other spaces like the first-person genre, the action genre -- games like that."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/12/james-ohlen-hits-back-against-critics-defends-swtors-innovatio/">James Ohlen hits back against critics, defends SWTOR's innovation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 17:00:00 EST. While four years is not a nice round number -- or even a halfway number like five -- it's a substantial milestone for any MMORPG. Debuting in early 2007, <a href="http://www.lotro.com/"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> introduced something we'd never seen before: a fully realized 3-D virtual Middle-earth where we could not only enjoy a deep MMO but explore the lands and meet the people we'd only read about before.<br />
<br />
It might not be a universal truth that all <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>LotRO</em></a> players are big Tolkien fans, but I'm sure enough that it's a sizable chunk of the playerbase. There's something special about the IP that gives a weight and richness to the game, especially when a long-time reader of the books is given leave to actually go on adventures through Eriador, Moria and Mirkwood. It's a giant sight-seeing tour of lore, a thrill with every brush one has with the source material.<br />
<br />
It's heady to consider that four years ago we were but starting on this journey, feeling out the mechanics of combat, crafting and pie-running. Four years later, <em>LotRO </em>has emerged to be one of the most significant MMOs of the past decade, growing strong with no signs of slowing down.<br />
<br />
Hit the jump as we reminisce about the ups, the downs, and the off-the-beaten-path hikes of our beloved game <a href="http://www.lotro.com/news/latestnews/1143-lotro-4th-anniversary">as it celebrates its fourth anniversary</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/22/the-road-to-mordor-four-more-years-four-more-years/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: Four more years, four more years!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/22/the-road-to-mordor-four-more-years-four-more-years/">The Road to Mordor: Four more years, four more years!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 22 Apr 2011 10:00:00 EST. Sometimes, all it takes to see an answer is a subtle change of attitude. For the past month or so, I have been trying to spend every ounce of spare time available on <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a>, but I'm starting to relax a little bit because I realized just how silly it is. I would rather enjoy the journey and get there when I get there; level 50 will come as it does, and hopefully by that point my fellow <a href="http://www.aetheracademy.com/">AETHER</a> members will be able to craft spectacles. Until then, let's just relax a bit and indulge a few questions with answers, yes?<br />
<br />
<em><strong> Gente asks</strong></em><strong>: Why is <a href="http://www.playonline.com"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a> the only game getting a holiday event?</strong><br />
<br />
There's no <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Halloween/">Halloween</a> event for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/final-fantasy-xiv"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> this year, no. There will likely be one next year, however, as the development team has stated there are events in the works for as early as the end of the year. Considering past experience with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Square-Enix/">Square-Enix</a> and this most ghoulish of holidays, we can expect it will feature an inordinately useful item and a surfeit of ghosts within the city walls.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/30/the-mog-log-relaxing-with-community-answers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Mog Log: Relaxing with community answers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/30/the-mog-log-relaxing-with-community-answers/">The Mog Log: Relaxing with community answers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 30 Oct 2010 12:00:00 EST. Is <a href="http://www.apb.com"><em>All Points Bulletin</em></a> the "Next Big Thing" in MMOs? While I'm fully aware that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/RealtimeWorlds/">Realtime Worlds</a> doesn't specifically prefer to associate the game with this genre, it's very much a part of it -- but it also orbits the fringes of what we commonly refer to as a massively multiplayer online game.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.guildwars.com/"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>, <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/All-Points-Bulletin/"><em>All Points Bulletin</em></a> come from a different school of business models. These games hinge on the idea that most people dislike coughing up 15 bucks a month to keep playing their favorite title. Just look to the success of the original <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars/"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>, having a year ago <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/24/guild-wars-franchise-sells-6-million-copies/">passed six million copies sold</a>. That's a pretty great start for non-subscription MMOs, and because of that success we now have <em>GW's</em> sequel and <em>APB</em> on the way.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/01/the-digital-continuum-the-next-big-thing-in-mmos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: The 'Next Big Thing' in MMOs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/01/the-digital-continuum-the-next-big-thing-in-mmos/">The Digital Continuum: The 'Next Big Thing' in MMOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 01 Feb 2010 12:00:00 EST.
