	Citizens of Norrath, have you ever wanted to soar about the land on the back of a horse that, inexplicably, has wings? If you answered yes, then you think about some awfully specific things. Also, you're in luck.<br />
	<br />
	<a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/sony-online-entertainment">Sony Online Entertainment</a> has announced that your dreams can now come true, as a number of pegasus mounts have been added to <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/everquest"><em>EverQuest</em></a>'s Marketplace. Yeah, that's right, it's going to cost you a bit of cash, but isn't it worth it to fly around on a frilly little equine-avian hybrid? Of course it is, now hush and go look at the pictures in the gallery below.<br />

For all those out there who boast about how uber their show pony mount is, <em><a href="http://steellegions.com/">Steel Legions</a> </em>horde of tanks, artillery and other weapons of awesome mass destruction begs to differ. The free-to-play title is bringing more explosive firepower to the battlefield with <a href="http://steellegions.com/the-warfare-update">its Warfare update</a>.<br />
<br />
In this patch, players can upgrade their tanks with a variety of new modules, starting with experience modules. These do pretty much what you'd expect: increase the rate of XP gained as you plow through the chaos of the fight.<br />
<br />
The Warfare update is also adding a marketplace for players to purchase better goods for their machines, new weapon systems like the Kinetic Deflector and Mazer Cannon, and an oil refinery that can be fought over for control of the liquid black gold.<br />
<br />
<em>Steel Legions</em> is a free-to-play browser-based MMO that takes place in an alternate timeline when steam-driven tanks clash for control over the world. You can watch the trailer for the Warfare update after the jump.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/07/steel-legions-opens-up-a-can-of-warfare-on-all-declared-enemies/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Steel Legions opens up a can of Warfare on all declared enemies</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/07/steel-legions-opens-up-a-can-of-warfare-on-all-declared-enemies/">Steel Legions opens up a can of Warfare on all declared enemies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 07 Oct 2011 14:00:00 EST. This week, I was all set to share my personal experiences as I continue my time on the <a href="http://everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II Extended</em></a> server. I was going to talk about guide events (or lack of them) and my amazing feats with my newly purchased Wand of Obliteration (I killed a Spectre in Sinking Sands at level 13 but only got about 1300 experience, which is not much more than I was getting for white and yellow cons at my level). But then I realized that if we're really going to roll up our sleeves and tackle the issue of free-to-play, we need to hear from those who exist on the other side of the virtual wall, those who have been silently playing in a world cut off from the rest of the Legacy servers, both in game and out.<br />
<br />
In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, I tracked down guild leaders and members of guilds on the Freeport server in order to hear from them what their gaming experience is like. While I had been playing my bronze account for the column, I made a character on my main account in order to have access to chat channels and in-game mail in order to get in touch with them. I spoke to two of the top raiding guilds on the server as well as a large crafting guild. We talked about raiding, the economy, and the community overall. What I uncovered was eye-opening. Read on for their stories.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/24/the-tattered-notebook-the-eq2x-community-speaks/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: The EQ2X community speaks</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/24/the-tattered-notebook-the-eq2x-community-speaks/">The Tattered Notebook: The EQ2X community speaks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 24 Sep 2011 12:00:00 EST. It's been almost a year now since <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eq2x/"><em>EverQuest II Extended</em></a> was officially launched, and I've resented every minute of its existence. From the moment it was first announced, on the eve of Fan Faire 2010, <em>EQ2X</em> has been my own personal Newman of the MMO world. It dominated the discussions at Fan Faire and put a damper on everyone's fun. And once it launched, it always seemed to be at the root of every problem. New invites to our guild on the live server dropped to just one in eight months (and that one invite was a real-life friend of a guildmate). The promised marketing campaign for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a> live got the shaft in favor of pushing the new free-to-play service. Forum snafus during the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Velious/">Velious</a></em> beta were all because of the <em>EQ2X</em> forums. While thousands and thousands crammed the Freeport server and frolicked for free, I languished on the live server and even began to empathize with the Grinch.<br />
<br />
But now that <em>EQ2X</em> is almost a year old, I decided it's time for me to bury the hatchet and pay a visit to the free-to-play server. I rolled up a new character on a bronze account, and over the next several weeks, I'll be taking a close look at <em>EverQuest II Extended</em>. It's a journey in <em>EQII</em> free-to-play through the eyes of a longtime player. Read on for my first arrival!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/10/the-tattered-notebook-a-grizzled-veteran-goes-free-to-play/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: A grizzled veteran goes free-to-play</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/10/the-tattered-notebook-a-grizzled-veteran-goes-free-to-play/">The Tattered Notebook: A grizzled veteran goes free-to-play</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 10 Sep 2011 12:00:00 EST. As I logged into <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> this past week, I was greeted with a promo to redeem my free festive sparker. Sorry, make that my FREE festive sparkler. Anyway, as part of the promotion, I could visit the Marketplace, scoop up my sparkler, and then use it to participate in the lighting of fireworks at the major cities in Norrath to receive place-able fireworks for my house or guild hall.<br />
<br />
I have to say, it was an odd moment. First off, I had to pause to make sure I hadn't accidentally logged into my <a href="http://www.freerealms.com"><em>Free Realms</em></a> account that I play with the kids because sparklers and fireworks seem more appropriate there. Second, I was trying to recall a time in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-2/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> when an in-game quest, tied to a live event no less, actually required possession of an item from the Marketplace.<br />
<br />
In <em>EQII</em>, we've come a long way when it comes to cash shops and microtransactions, and <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online's</em></a> recent controversy surrounding the Noble Exchange really puts things into perspective. In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, we'll look back on <em>EQII's</em> RMT evolution -- through <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE's</em></a> ill-fated monocle.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/04/the-tattered-notebook-looking-back-at-rmt-through-a-futuristic/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Looking back at RMT through a futuristic monocle</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/04/the-tattered-notebook-looking-back-at-rmt-through-a-futuristic/">The Tattered Notebook: Looking back at RMT through a futuristic monocle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 04 Jul 2011 14:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com">DC Universe Online</a></em> is jumping aboard the microtransaction train with an announcement from <a href="http://www.soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a> stating that the <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DCUO</em></a> Marketplace is now live. Right now, the marketplace is fairly barren, with only three items for players to choose from.<br />
	<br />
	These items are Proto Repair-Bots, which are exactly what they sound like, as they provide players with the convenient ability to repair on the go. Also included are Vault Tickets, which are sold either in singles or in stacks of five. These tickets allow players extra access to the Vault instance, where they can earn unique rewards. We don't have any other information about what will be available for sale in the future, but keep an eye out and we'll be sure to update you as soon as we know more.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/30/dc-universe-online-launches-in-game-market/">DC Universe Online launches in-game market</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 30 Jun 2011 19:30:00 EST. Last week, we looked at the amazing job that <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> does with providing ways to make your character look unique. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a> is one of the best when it comes to making your character look special, cool, and fitting of who you are. But there's another side of this coin, and as one forum poster has rightfully pointed out, the best-looking items aren't always the best items in the game. As Rayven2 noted recently on the <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/posts/list.m?start=0&amp;topic_id=498680">official forums</a>:
<blockquote class="bq-standard">
	<i><em>A good example is the Elemental War Sword. Sure it drops from an easy-mode mob, but it's a 4x raid and takes time and effort to beat (at least the first time you do it). The sword should look somewhat cool, but the graphic is just the same reused sword graphic painted gold. The chillborne sword is the one that has the particle effects for 200SC. So you bust your hump beating a mob that took 24 people to take down only to get a reward that looks worse than an appearance weapon anyone can acquire for little or no effort. None of the scout weapons look anywhere as cool as the SC daggers out there.</em></i></blockquote>
Senior Producer <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/smokejumper">Dave "SmokeJumper" Georgeson</a> replied, saying, <em>"It's a fair point, although if we're not paying attention to that now, it's by oversight, not by intent. Everyone wants something cool looking (not just cool stats) when they overcome big challenges. That's natural."</em><br />
<br />
In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, we'll take a closer look at "looking cool" and how the rise of cash shops has changed the way we view each other.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/11/the-tattered-notebook-if-we-all-look-cool-how-do-we-know-whos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: If we all look cool, how do we know who's really cool?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/11/the-tattered-notebook-if-we-all-look-cool-how-do-we-know-whos/">The Tattered Notebook: If we all look cool, how do we know who's really cool?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 15:00:00 EST. Everyone's talking about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/15/everquest-devs-talk-progression-server-on-new-live-cast/">the new progression server that launched yesterday</a> in <a href="http://www.everquest.com/"><em>EverQuest</em></a> -- and it seems that so many people are trying to play on it that they've outstripped its capacity. Players have reported that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/fippy-darkpaw/">Fippy Darkpaw</a>, a special server that's rolling out <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/"><em>EQ's</em></a> expansions at a measured pace, has been crushed by the crowds trying to log in.<br />
<br />
As a result, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> decided <a href="http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/news_article.vm?id=52178">to create a second time-locked progression server</a> named after the game's infamous dragon Vulak'Aerr. According to the company, the server <a href="http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/news_article.vm?id=52180">went online today</a>. This should help relieve the stress on poor ol' Fippy. If you're curious about what a progression server entails, <a href="http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/news_article.vm?id=52155">SOE's set up a helpful FAQ</a> to clarify the details.<br />
<br />
Players on <em>EverQuest's</em> other servers shouldn't feel left out of the celebrations, as they'll be enjoying a double XP weekend from February 18th through the 21st. It is important to note that this XP bonus will not apply to the new progression servers. During the same weekend, SOE is marking down a number of items in the Marketplace for a President's Day sale. You can read more on this special weekend <a href="http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/news_article.vm?id=52179">over at EverQuest Players</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/16/everquest-launches-second-progression-server-due-to-popular-dema/">EverQuest launches second progression server due to popular demand</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 16 Feb 2011 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.soe.com">SOE</a> has been slowly getting new information out about <a href="http://everquest2.com/get_the_game/dov"><em>Destiny of Velious</em></a>. "Mom! Stop driving through the pink lights! Only go through the green ones!" <br />
<br />
I glanced over at my two kids and bit my tongue. I was in the middle of speeder bike racing and was having a little trouble navigating the course. In the split second that I turned away, my bike steered off the course, ran halfway up the snowy embankment, and lodged itself in a campfire. I was already dead last, but now I had the pleasure of watching the other racers lap me, not once, but twice.<br />
<br />
I was playing <a href="http://www.clonewarsadventures.com"><em>Clone Wars Adventures</em></a>, the latest free-to-play game from <a href="http://www.soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a>, and I was experiencing the full effects of the generation gap. I know, you're probably saying, "Wait a second, this is an <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> column!" And you're right, but this week, I'd like to take a look at something that both <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/clone-wars-adventures"><em>Clone Wars</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> now have in common -- gifting. Read on to see why <em>EQII</em> players aren't necessarily viewing this latest game change as much of a gift.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/29/the-tattered-notebook-gifting-tis-the-season/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Gifting -- 'tis the season?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/29/the-tattered-notebook-gifting-tis-the-season/">The Tattered Notebook: Gifting -- 'tis the season?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 11:00:00 EST. I looked down at the dog-eared journal and shivered. As excited as I was to finally be in possession of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook">The Tattered Notebook</a>, I recalled the fates of its previous owners. First, seemingly out of madness, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/23/the-tattered-notebook-farewell-but-certainly-not-goodbye/">Seccia</a> made a sudden and unexpected career change to blog about kittens. Now, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/bloggers/jef-reahard/">Scarve, a Ratonga</a>, has disappeared in the night, leaving behind only a wedge of cheese, this tattered notebook, and a tiny stuffed Kerran doll. Rumors spread of his appearance among a shadowy cult of Gnomish tinkerers, but it's unclear whether he's with them by choice or by force.<br />
<br />
Regardless, I took a deep breath and opened the cover. What a perfect time to begin adding my entries to the journal, right at the celebration of <em><a href="http://everquest2.com/">EverQuest II's</a></em> six-year anniversary! To celebrate, the game is holding its second annual <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/festival-of-heroes">Festival of Heroes</a>, from November 19-30. In honor of this milestone, my first entry into The Tattered Notebook is a retrospective of those past six years, with an eye towards the future.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/08/the-tattered-notebook-six-years-of-everquest-ii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Six years of EverQuest II</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/08/the-tattered-notebook-six-years-of-everquest-ii/">The Tattered Notebook: Six years of EverQuest II</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 08 Nov 2010 10:00:00 EST. <span style="float: right; margin-left: 10px; margin-top: 7px;"> <script> var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/pc_games/EverQuest_II_has_gone_free_to_play'; </script> <script src="http://digg.com/api/diggthis.js"></script></span> Despite assurances as recently as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/27/georgeson-eqii-wont-be-going-free-to-play/">last month</a> that <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> wouldn't be going free-to-play, <a href="http://www.soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a> today announced that the game is doing just that... sort of. <a href="http://everquest2.com/free_to_play/extended_faq"><em>EverQuest II Extended</em></a> is slated for a beta launch on August 17th, and features a separate server set providing all of the game's original content via the insanely popular F2P business model.<br />
<br />
"<em>The very nature of an MMO is change, and the decision to create </em>Extended<em> was fueled by evolution of the industry landscape</em>," says <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EQII</em></a> lead producer Dave Georgeson. "<em>By offering two services side by side we have given the power to our players to determine the program that best fits their game play style</em>."<br />
<br />
<em>Extended</em> will allow access to all zones through <em>The Shadow Odyssey</em>, sans subscription, credit card info, or software purchases. Players will be able to purchase additional perks (such as races, levels 80 - 90, statistical gear, and potions) through the marketplace. Existing <em>EQII</em> subscribers will also be able to transfer their characters to the F2P servers, albeit without their gold. Bags, no-trade items, and attuned items will be transferred. <em>Extended</em> also offers a yearly subscription priced at $200 USD, which equals out to $16.66 per month. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE</a> is chipping in 60 Station Cash to make up the difference.<br />
<br />
Check out the <a href="http://everquest2.com/_themes/default/images/extended/membershipMatrix.jpg">membership matrix</a> for all the details on the new service, and stay with Massively for our interview with Dave Georgeson later today.<br />

</a></div>
11 years ago, when <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_clinton">Bill Clinton</a> was still the U.S. President, <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0133093/"><em>The Matrix</em></a> wowed moviegoers with bullet-time, dial-up Internet was the norm, and 3D online gaming was just in its infancy, bouncing baby <a href="http://www.everquest.com/everquest.vm"><em>EverQuest</em></a> stepped into the world. It's amazing to see that this game is not only still around, but <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/10/everquest-underfoot-introduces-new-zone-special-pricing/">expanding constantly</a> -- a fact that should encourage fans of this or any MMORPG. In honor of one of the longest-running 3D MMOs, SOE has announced <a href="http://everquest.station.sony.com/eq11th/">11 days of special in-game events</a> for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/"><em>EverQuest</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Players are challenged to find a special gift for a wizard master, to rescue poor Miggles Mistflinger from a sad fate, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/11/eq-wants-you-for-st-pattys-day/">party with the Community Team on St. Patty's Day</a>, and take on mechanical nasties in a special raid. For <a href="http://stationexchange.station.sony.com/livegamer.vm">Marketplace</a> shoppers, SOE is offering a 25-50% discount on 11 items. Finally, they've invited everyone to join the <em>EverQuest </em>team for <a href="http://www.ustream.tv/channel/sony-online-entertainment">an exclusive USTREAM event</a> on March 17, 2010 at 1:00pm PST.<br />
<br />
Oh, and did we mention you can <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/24130/">pick the game up on Steam for $2.50</a>, and that it includes all 15 expansion packs? Even those who aren't <em>EQ</em> players have a chance to help celebrate.<br />
<br />
Fans of EverQuest can also mosey over to <a href="http://www.facebook.com/EverQuestLive">the Facebook fan page</a> for the game, where SOE has posted a large gallery of screenshots to celebrate 11 years of fantasy gaming.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/16/11-days-of-in-game-events-for-everquests-11th-birthday/">11 days of in-game events for EverQuest's 11th birthday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 16 Mar 2010 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Virtual-worlds/">Virtual worlds</a> have had a rocky time in the marketplace. Focusing on user-generated content, it takes a while for enough users to become active and enough market traction to be established for them to start becoming financially viable. Earlier this year marked <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/21/metaplace-announces-january-1st-shutdown/">the shutdown of <em>Metaplace</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Raph-Koster/">Raph Koster</a>'s entry into the field of virtual worlds. Now another long-running part of the field is closing down, as <a href="http://www.there.com">There.com</a> has just announced <a href="http://www.prod.there.com/info/announcement">the service will be closing on March 9th</a>.<br />
<br />
A <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-13772_3-10462627-52.html">retrospective on the game's history</a> is available on <a href="http://www.cnet.com">CNET</a>, discussing the world's status as being a competitor for <a href="http://secondlife.com/"><em>Second Life</em></a> without ever quite gaining the traction that its bigger cousin managed. While the environment was seen as slightly more kid-and-media friendly due to restrictions on adult-only content, the project had a difficult time turning a profit. After seven years, it's finally overwhelmed the company.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.prod.there.com/info/announcement">official announcement</a> includes a number of resources for those who have invested money in There.com to regain it prior to the shutdown, with extensive buyback programs and refunds available for all participants. Our condolences to the team on this sad turn of events.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/02/there-com-is-closing/">There.com is closing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 02 Mar 2010 20:00:00 EST. Do you love the pets in <a href="http://www.freerealms.com"><em>Free Realms</em></a> as much as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/26/free-realms-releases-january-ask-a-dev-video/">Game Designer Margaret Krohn</a>? If you just can't get your fill of all things furry and scaly in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/free-realms"><em>Free Realms</em></a>, you'll be very happy with the new pets. <br />
<br />
Haven't seen them yet? Well, for starters there is now a sad little spider named Mister Munchy, available in five different colors. He's got the blues and being adopted would cheer him right up. Are you more of a dinosaur fan? Several new dinosaurs are available as well, including Screech the Raptor -- who seems a lot friendlier than the Jurassic Park variety -- and Crackers, who is having a bit of an identity crisis. If you're more the traditional sort, there are new ponies available as well, bringing the total to thirteen.<br />
<br />
All of the new pets are available now, so make a visit to the Marketplace and see what you'd like to add to your collection.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/02/free-realms-expands-its-portfolio-of-pets/">Free Realms expands its portfolio of pets</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 02 Feb 2010 15:00:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Deep in the bowels of the marketplace lies a new dungeon. A dungeon teeming with evil. A dungeon in desperate need of heroes to save it from its corruption. A dungeon that's... well being added to <a href="http://www.ddo.com"><em>Dungeons and Dragons Online</em></a>, of course!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine">Turbine</a> has <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjlWBn-rcvs">released the trailer</a> for their newest adventure pack for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dungeons-and-dragons-online"><em>Dungeons and Dragons Online</em></a> -- the Catacombs. The goal of this undead dungeon is to plunge into the depths and save the spirit of the Archbishop of the White Flame's daughter before she too is tainted by the evil in the old archives.<br />
<br />
If you're interested in the brief trailer (and braving the narration) then check it out embedded after the break. Otherwise, if you're an avid <em>DDO</em> player, you can pick up the new adventure pack from the <em>DDO</em> store and experience it for yourself!</div>

We recently noticed an interview by <a href="http://forum.gamesource.it/members/Nolvadex.html">Nolvadex at the Italian gaming site Gamesource</a> with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-chronicles-of-spellborn"><em>The Chronicles of Spellborn</em></a>'s lead community manager Pierre-Yves "Mirage" Deslandes. <br /><br />Mirage discusses a relatively smooth European launch for the title and some of the complexities of their publishing deals, insofar as they affect the European market. The challenges of balancing PvE and PvP content in the game comes up, and Mirage also addresses why <em>The Chronicles of Spellborn</em> shipped without an auction house, stressing that a marketplace is indeed on the way. In terms of building upon the game's combat systems, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/spellborn-nv">Netherlands-based developer Spellborn NV</a> doesn't plan to make any major changes to the game's combat system, which <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pierre-yves-deslandes">Mirage</a> states is the trademark and backbone of <em>The Chronicles of Spellborn</em>. Adding greater depth to what's presently offered instead of simply adding more races and classes to the game is clearly a priority for the developers.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/01/the-chronicles-of-spellborn-interview-explains-games-unique-asp/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Chronicles of Spellborn interview explains game's unique aspects</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/01/the-chronicles-of-spellborn-interview-explains-games-unique-asp/">The Chronicles of Spellborn interview explains game's unique aspects</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 01 Mar 2009 12:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.ddo.com/"><em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online</em></a> continues to hold their own in a quickly-growing MMO world. When <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dungeons-and-dragons-online"><em>DDO</em></a> first showed up as a licensed MMO of the grandaddy of roleplaying games, their main goal was just to meet expectations -- so many people have been a fan of the pen-and-paper game for so long that putting it into MMO form was no easy task. But since release, the <span style="font-style: italic;">DDO </span>team has made improvement after improvement, and added so much content to the game that it's moved beyond the license to stand on its own as a very singular kind of MMO.<br /><br />Massively got a chance to sit down with the team and take a look at the latest update, Module 7, due out on June 3, and currently in public testing. In addition to some extended playtime with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/17/the-monk-and-more-in-ddo/">the new Monk class</a>, we got to see updates to the lower level Three Barrel Cove area, a shrine to recently passed-on D&amp;D creator <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Gygax">Gary Gygax</a>, and the new raid area under the destroyed Marketplace tent, as well as a few new monsters and raid bosses that can be found down there.<br /><br />To start your tour through Module 7, just roll a d20 and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/27/danddo-module-7-the-monk/">click on through</a>. To jump to any section of the walkthrough (including directly to our exclusive video preview, if that's what you're looking for), hit the links after the break.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dungeons-and-dragons-online-module-7-walkthrough/">Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online: Module 7 Walkthrough</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dungeons-and-dragons-online-module-7-walkthrough/#827161"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/008ddomodule7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dungeons-and-dragons-online-module-7-walkthrough/#827160"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/007ddomodule7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dungeons-and-dragons-online-module-7-walkthrough/#827159"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/006ddomodule7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dungeons-and-dragons-online-module-7-walkthrough/#827158"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/005ddomodule7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dungeons-and-dragons-online-module-7-walkthrough/#827157"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/004ddomodule7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/27/massively-previews-dungeons-and-dragons-onlines-module-7/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively previews Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online's Module 7</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/27/massively-previews-dungeons-and-dragons-onlines-module-7/">Massively previews Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online's Module 7</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 27 May 2008 11:00:00 EST. <div align="center"><a href="http://www.ffinsider.net/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" alt="" title="You've officially maxed yourself out. Now what?" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/edgescreen.png" /></a><br /></div>
<p>Congratulations! You've hit level 70 (or whatever max level is in your favorite game), and you're officially a badass. For many players, this is a goal they've been striving towards for months -- even years in some cases. The feeling of having that first max level character is immensely invigorating. It's like putting the finishing touches on <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://www.news.com/Macs-new-OS-Seven-years-in-the-making/2009-1040_3-254470.html" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/14/interplay-to-rez-fallout-mmo-project-looking-for-funds/">a long-term project</a> or getting to the last page of <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_and_peace" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_and_peace">a monstrous novel</a>. What an accomplishment! However, after basking in the glow of your newly maxed out character for a few days, you quickly realize you have a small problem: What do you do with yourself now?</p>
<p>The answer to that question is going to depend heavily on what game you play. For most people, it's going to be <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/pvp/arena/index.xml" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/the-importance-of-collision-detection-in-pvp/">PvP</a>, <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/raiding/" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/10/30/beginners-guide-to-wow-raiding/">raiding</a>, or a nice mix of both. You'll probably continue collecting gear for your character or working on your skills. Depending on the game, you might be able to work on some sort of <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://www.planeteq.com/reference/alternate_advancement/index.shtml" href="http://www.planeteq.com/reference/alternate_advancement/index.shtml">alternate advancement</a> or <a target="_blank" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/13/70-new-badges-in-issue-11/">achievement system</a> for your character -- maybe even hunt down some <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://lotro.turbine.com/article/286" href="http://lotro.turbine.com/article/286">unique titles</a>. All of this is pretty standard fare for endgame content. Sooner or later, you'll probably get a little bored of it. Don't fret, though! They are apparently <a href="http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/gaia-guides-and-resources/donation-items/t.15915829/">taking in-game items</a>, and <a href="http://www.gaiastore.com/servlet/Categories?category=gaia+gear">recreating them</a> in real-life form. Now, these items are all "donation items" (now known as <a href="http://gaia.wikia.com/wiki/Monthly_Collectible">Monthly collectibles</a>)-- they're designed and sold by <em>Gaia </em>for real money, supposedly to support the server and associated costs of the game. So basically these are RMT items in-game, not special loots available only in certain places.<br /><br />But it is incredibly cool that they've <a href="http://www.gaiastore.com/servlet/Detail?no=188">faithfully recreated this stuff</a>. And I can't help but imagine what it would be like for other games to do this. What if you could buy <a href="http://www.wowwiki.com/Perdition's_Blade">a Perdition's Blade</a> to commemorate all that time you spent getting one in Molten Core? Or a <a href="http://eve.wikia.com/wiki/Hulk">real-life model of a Hulk</a>, or actual reproductions of player-created items in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life"><em>Second Life</em></a>? I'm sure this isn't a new idea (we're already willing to pay large amounts of money to make <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2007/12/05/bring-your-character-home-with-figureprints/">virtual items and people real</a>). But it is an exciting one.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.wonderlandblog.com/wonderland/2008/01/gaia-online-gea.html">Wonderland</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/18/gaia-onlines-virtual-gear-gets-real/">Gaia Online's virtual gear gets real</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 18 Jan 2008 16:00:00 EST.
