Turbine have announced the patch notes for the latest updates to Lord of the Ring Online, Volume 2 Book 7 Patch 2. The biggest change for this patch is the new quest guide system is out of beta and now turned on by default for all players. The quest guide is a system to display quest objectives on the map, in a similar way to several other games.

An issue with Volume II, Book 2, Chapter 4 that caused it to prematurely complete has also been addressed, which has required any open instances of that quest to be removed from quest journals and the quest must now be restarted.

For those Lord of the Rings Online fans in Europe who have eagerly and patiently awaited the new Book 7 content, you can now rejoice in the fact that the Book 7 patch has finally gone live on the EU servers! That's right, no longer will you press your longing face against the front window that reaches across the pond, as you can now enjoy (or at least start the download for) the Leaves of Lorien content patch.

The new crafting instances are certainly a big part of the upcoming Lord of the Rings Online Volume 2, Book 7 update, which is why Turbine has released several new screens showing off the content. We're fairly certain that we're not missing the point when we get excited about shiny, pretty swords and images of a Dwarf mining with a mighty pick axe.

That's normal, right? We're not entirely certain, but it seems like the kind of thing a balanced person would get all hot and bothered over. In any case, you can find plenty of sweetly sized images to salivate over (or is that still just us?) in our gallery just below. Enjoy!

Finding safe passage below the leaves of Lothlórien is no easy task, especially when it requires you to earn the trust of the Galadhrim. So it's a very good thing indeed that LotRO Life has you covered with a very well put together guide on this very subject!

Trust us, you really want to complete the quests suggested in this guide. We tried to just stroll into the Golden Wood without actually earning and trust and got a mouth full of Elven arrows. It wasn't pleasant, and subsequently now we're eating all our meals through a straw.

Oh, and if you're wondering why we'd do something so very stupid, then you really need to see the Golden Wood screens in our Lord of the Rings Online book 7 gallery and dev tour gallery.

If you were a Lord of the Rings Online subscriber and were thinking about getting back into the game, now's your chance. In celebration of Volume 2: Book 7, Turbine has opened the doors to all former subscribers, reactivating everyone's accounts so you can play starting tomorrow and ending on the 31st.

Accompanying this five day "free weekend" is a 25% increase in the experience provided by all monsters that everyone can enjoy. This bonus experience stacks with rest experience, so that means you're going to be flying through levels at a rapid pace. Speaking of flying through the levels, Turbine is also promising that "recent game enhancements" will allow players to immediately gain multiple levels upon receiving any experience.

So yes, experience, it does come in pints.

Volume 2, Book 7: Leaves of Lórien, the first major content patch since the release of the Mines of Moria expansion, hit the Lord of the Rings Online live servers yesterday. The patch includes an extensive feature list including:
But along with the new features comes a long list of bugs as well. The vaunted quest guide system remains "in beta." It is automatically turned off, but can be enabled by going into the Options panel. I tried it last night and found it very useful. It doesn't work for all quests yet, but it helped me track down some quest objectives that had eluded me in Evendim.

On the upside, leveling is now faster and players under level 60 will see a big level jump on their next kill to put them on track with the new system. I've seen an additional 1.5 and 2.5 levels on various alts. Don't forget to hit the trainer after your level bump.

Tomorrow marks the launch of Lord of the Rings Online's newest content patch, Volume II: Book 7. This free content patch is special as it's the first major content we've received for the game since the Mines of Moria expansion last November.

So to help ring in the new Book, Turbine has teamed up with Massively to offer an exclusive in-game cloak (shown above) named "The Cloak of the Raven Friend". You will have the chance to win one of 25 of these exclusive cloaks in a giveaway we will hold tomorrow morning here on the site. This cloak is very similar to those obtained with the Moria Collector's Edition, but with a unique skin. The stats for this cloak are:
  • Can be used by anyone in the game (i.e. it is not a high-level piece of gear)
  • 42 Armor
  • 120+ in-combat morale regen

Turbine has announced (via Twitter!) that the Volume 2, Book 7: Leaves of Lórien content update for Lord of the Rings Online will go live this Tuesday, March 17, 2009. But you can get your hands on the update files now. Turbine is giving North American, Australian and New Zealand players an opportunity to download the patch files early via direct download or torrent. The downloaded files can even be grabbed from a different computer and then you can transfer those files to your LotRO machine. No early files have been posted for European players yet.

What awaits you in LotRO's first major content patch since the Moria expansion went live in November? Turbine offers a quick list of the major features on Vol 2 Book 7 as well as updated Patch Notes. The LotRO Follower blog offers a list of what changed during Testing by comparing the patch notes when the PTR went live and now.

Massively has its own tour of the new content as the enchanted lands of Lothlórien are opened up to players. And, of course, there are plenty of screenshots below to tide you over until the content goes live in a few days.

We've been writing quite a bit about Lord of the Rings Online and its upcoming Book 7 content patch of late. Turbine was kind enough to give us a developer tour through LotRO Volume II: Book 7, explaining the new content like Lothlórien's new areas as well as crafting and battle instances. The only thing we didn't know was the exact release date... until now, through the magic of Twitter.

The folks at Turbine have just twittered the final piece to the puzzle: "Aren't you glad you're following us? You're the first to know that Book 7: Leaves of Lorien arrives in NA on Tuesday, March 17!"

Hark! New screenshots for Lord of the Rings Online's free Volume II: Book 7 update have, uh, revealed themselves! Okay, we won't expose you -- our dear readers -- to any further torture. We realize that sometimes our diatribes can go a bit deep into the nerdy lore of J.R.R. Tolkien's world.

These six new screens are focused on the new player experience overhaul that Turbine has given to each of the starting zones within the game. We're really digging this goblin dude, who looks pretty devious. Although the caterpillar/butterfly guy being attacked by a Human Warden is also quite a nice shot, as well. We've got all six in our gallery, so feel free to pick your own favorites!

While there are a bunch of great podcasts out there covering lots of different MMO games, we're always glad to see a new, promising show join the group. One such show that we've recently latched on to here at the Massively offices is LOTROcast, which is a mid-length, bi-weekly Lord of the Rings Online podcast put out by Moormur. While there are still a few technical bugs that need to be worked out in regards to formatting, for three shows thus far, it's proving to be well worth the listen.

In this most recent episode of LOTROcast, Moormur sits down with Aaron "Rowan" Campbell, Live Producer for Lord of the Rings Online and talks about a variety of different topics like the development of ideas and testing for Book 7; some of the upcoming dev love in terms of new content players can expect; different things from mounts to mailboxes; and more. He also touches briefly on the roadmap for 2009 and Book 8, and fields a few reader questions. In all, definitely worth a listen if you love the lands of Middle-earth. According to a recent post on the official forums by Meghan "Patience" Rodberg, the Eyes and Guard Inn should be implemented on LotRO's test server today during the patch. The game's Community Manager said in the post, "We have news! Assuming the new build passes QA, we'll be updating Bullroarer tomorrow, and will be opening the Eyes & Guard Tavern as well. So, while not 100% guaranteed that we won't run into a delay, that's the current plan."

For those not familiar with the importance of the Eyes and Guard Inn, be sure to check out this guide created by us for the previous test server, Roheryn. The guide still applies on the new Bullroarer server, as it's basically a way to get a newly-created character to max level for testing purposes. Plus, if you'd like more information on the test server and when/if your server and your characters may be copied over, check out this FAQ.

[UPDATE] Patience gives a bit of an addendum to the test server guide with how to get from level 50 to 60.

Lord of the Rings Online has a new free content patch releasing very soon, and Turbine was kind enough to give us our very own dev tour of the new content. We've seen some tidbits of information here and there, across the forums and other fan blogs, but it's always nice to get the info from the perspective of the people who created the game, while they warp you around to closed instances, secret locations and encourage you to jump out of trees with your borrowed immortal character (that never gets old).

So on our tour we soaked up as much as possible to unleash on you, our favorite readers (yes, I'm talking to you!). We learned about crafting and battle instances, the new quest guide, Lothlórien's newest cities and environments, and the epic quest line. You can bet we took a billion screenshots along the way (ok, 18), including a new complete map of Lothlórien which shows the areas east of the Nimrodel. We appreciate a developer who goes back to earlier content and improves upon it. And to that end, our appreciation of those who go back to the very beginning knows no bounds. That's why we're quite pleased with Turbine for rolling out their "New Player Experience" changes with the free Volume II: Book 7 update to Lord of the Rings Online.

If you'd like to know exactly what all the changes are going to be about then take a look at this developer diary focusing on the Dwarf and Elf starting zones. Much of the changes are quality of life stuff, like reducing travel times and removing all newbie instances to avoid any load screens. Turbine's also added quest rewards for specific races and classes, and even tossed in dyes as rewards to alleviate the tedium of seeing equipment clones running all over the place.

These changes (and others) are all great improvements. With the new quest tracking system coming at the same time, Lord of the Rings Online is shaping up to be an all-around friendlier MMO experience.

If, as a Lord of the Rings Online player, you're either confused or completely in the dark where it concerns the upcoming Volume II: Book 7 crafting instances for Lord of the Rings Online, LotroLife has got you covered. The guide is pretty in-depth about everything an aspiring crafts-person needs to know about running the six different crafting instances being added to the game.

Thankfully, it looks as though an explanation about the timers for these instances was also added after multiple inquiries on the topic. So if for some reason you're still left with a question or two, you may just get it. Although since author KatashiTakishiro figured this whole thing out via trial and error, that may be the best course to figuring every in and out in the end.

The newest concept art to hit from the Volume II: Book 7: Leaves of Lórien update for Lord of the Rings Online features an astonishingly beautiful Galadriel's Court. Does it surprise anyone else that elves are all about visually stunning architecture? While the Dwarves are primarily concerned with size and how much gold was involved, the Elves seem to focus on making everything curvy and elegant. It's like an M.C. Escher drawing, only with leaves and vines instead of doors and stairs.

There's plenty more beautiful concept are that's previously come out of Turbine, and we highly encourage you browse through them if you haven't yet. Trust us, it's worth the few minutes you'll spend massaging your eye muscles enough to stop them from popping those precious peepers back into their sockets. The upcoming content patch for Lord of the Rings Online, named Leaves of Lorien, has finally been given a face. If you're running around on the Bullroarer server already, you may have seen the beauty of the new content, but for everyone else, we've started our Volume II: Book 7 gallery below. Take a look at the six newest screenshots provided by Turbine earlier today.

Lord of the Rings Online's Volume II: Book 7 is right around the corner, and the developers at Turbine are breaking out their best teasers for the new content with a recent dev diary. This diary, entitled "Lothlorien Quest Notes" gives us some comprehensive details about what to expect with the upcoming free content patch.

Over at the LotRO fansite MMeOw, they take their own look at this dev diary and what it means to them. "Book 7 is a new "on ramp", as has been stated previously in the forums. This means it doesn't require you to have finished the previous Volume II books to start it. It's still heavily recommended that you finish Books 1 through 6, however, so you'll get the full effect of the storyline." Check out the complete dev diary for more information.
