While some gamers in the US may not be immediately familiar with Codemasters, we know our readers across the pond will immediately recognize them as the company with the rights to publish Lord of the Rings Online, Dungeons and Dragons Online, and (the "who-knows-when-it-will-release") MMO Jumpgate Evolution overseas. With that said, last year we heard that the COO at Codemasters, Tony Williams, decided to step down from Chief Organizational Officer. Not too long after that, there were rumors that Warner Brothers was looking into buying the company. Today, it seems that a company from India called Reliance Big Entertainment has pounced, and now owns a 50% stake in Codemasters.

Apparently, Reliance Big Entertainment is very well known in India. It's subsidiary company, Zapak Digital Entertainment, owns the largest online gaming portal in the country as well. This gaming-specific company will be the one in charge of overseeing the investment in UK-based Codemasters.

As to what this could mean for MMO gamers in the EU, we'll have to wait and see. Perhaps Reliance/Zapak will see fit to close the gap in differences from the Turbine-controlled version of Lord of the Rings Online. Or perhaps this new company will finally roll the Codemasters version of Dungeons and Dragons Online over to the same free-to-play model that has been such a huge success for Turbine in the States. No matter what, this is going to be interesting to watch.

Almost every fantasy MMO offers some variation on a non-combat activity. Whether you're investing in one of the numerous styles of crafting, the unique negotiation minigame in Vanguard, or just /dancing the night away in an NPC city ... there's always something to do. For myself, I've always enjoyed the idea of fishing in-game. It's always relaxing, often lets you enjoy some quiet time in beautiful natural spots, and usually nets you some kind of tangible benefit.

The problem with fishing is that it's often boring. In several games, you really have to really grind away at it to 'get anywhere'. Often the mechanics are needlessly complicated, and some games just aren't that pretty to stand around in for an extended period of time. That's why I've grown to love fishing in Lord of the Rings Online so much. The game is beautiful, the mechanics are simple, and the developers don't force you to stand by the side of a river for hours on end. One month to the day after the introduction of the Lord of the Rings Online Ring-lore event, nearly all servers have reached the goal of finding 70,000 vestiges of ring-lore each. The only exception to this is the Firefoot server, which has the lowest population, yet Brandywine met their goals on August 11th. Now that we've all done such a great job and the objectives were met far before anyone predicted, what's next? Can we still get ring-lore? Will this event repeat?

Well, the main point of this event was to open the second part of Book 14, Chapter 7 to players, so if you're to that point, you can now proceed. As far as the event repeating, there's no official word on that, yet Turbine may take the overwhelming participation in this event as a learning experience for future events. Currently you can't get any more ring-lore, yet the Heralds of Rivendell are still scattered throughout Middle-earth. So this begs the question: would you want another of these events? What type would you like to see?

The first official patch to Lord of the Rings Online's Book 14 has arrived today, and with it comes mostly bug fixes, gameplay balance issues and crafting improvements. However, some of the most pressing changes were ironically added at the very bottom of the patch notes page.

In order of awesomeness: Summer Festival music boxes now work properly, the Summer Festival horse's blanket has been "toned down" and the Auction House has been fixed! Yes, that's right, the annoying bug that prevented spaces and dashes to be entered into the AH search box (except for dragging and dropping the name from an existing item) has now been fixed. This means we can all go back to searching for items that we didn't already own, which was not fun and caused many players to forego the AH completely until this bug was fixed. Rejoice! It is now fixed.

In the latest forum round-up over at Ten Ton Hammer's Lord of the Rings Online division, it's no surprise that the focus is on Book 14's new content. There are gleeful praises and there are angry rants, but perhaps the most interesting is the speculation on what's to come with the expanded Critter Play feature.

As one player predicts, the word is out that we may be able to play as Gandalf in Mines of Moria. Now, keep in mind that this is one player's speculation and the evidence he presents for this theory is a bit of a stretch, but wouldn't it be interesting if they were right? Imagine being Gandalf in that infamous Balrog battle scene, protecting the Fellowship from certain doom all by your lonesome. Now that's immersive game play.

We know you're excited about tomorrow's new content patch for Lord of the Rings Online. With Book 14, we'll get some wonderful new additions to the game as well as some hearty preparation for Mines of Moria later this year. So it would only make sense that you'd want to play as soon as possible, right? You don't want to sit around patching with everyone else, you want to play the second Book 14 releases!

Turbine makes it easy for players to do just that. Their Downloadable Updater will patch Books 13 and 14 onto your computer before the official release hits the live servers. Not only will this let you be ahead of the game, but you can also download this content on another computer, transfer the file onto a disk or device, then run it on your computer with a LotRO client to access the update. The downloaded update won't apply itself until the servers go live on patch day, but consider this a great little tip on getting yourself prepared.

In a recent interview with Ten Ton Hammer, Lord of the Rings Online developers Aaron Campbell and Brent Schmidt answered some questions about the new content patch releasing this Tuesday. They explain a bit more about what to expect with Book 14, and ultimately with Mines of Moria, calling it "the largest single continuous underground space ever created in an online game."

However, a good chunk of this interview centers around the new Legendary Weapons that we'll see with Mines of Moria. After several months of preparation, tons of screenshots, videos and more, Lord of the Rings Online's Book 14 has a set release date. According to the official site, the servers will be down on Tuesday, July 22nd from 6AM - 12PM Eastern time for the latest content update, Book 14: The Ring-forges of Eregion.

As we reported last week from our Lord of the Rings Online Book 14 tour, the time has arrived for the Fellowship to finally leave Rivendell. For the players who enjoy the game's connection to Tolkien's work, this is truly an exciting time. For the game developers, it's a fairly unique challenge.

In a recent dev diary entitled Moving the Fellowship, Jeff "MadeOfLions" Libby discusses the problems faced by the development team in regards to this challenge, and how they solved them. For example, throughout the game as it stands today, the nine Fellowship members are not all together waiting for their big move. Some are in various locations throughout Rivendell, while Gimli is in the Misty Mountains. Each member is simultaneously involved in dozens of quests throughout the game, which poses its own set of challenges. Turbine has sent along some brand new screenshots relating to the Lord of the Rings Online Book 14 update, primarily to display some of the Minstrel animations that are going to be introduced. We've added these high quality shots to our Book 14 gallery, and in them you can see various Minstrels playing their instruments like never before.

As well as the Minstrel shots, we are treated to a close-up of Armethial (who we caught a quick glimpse of in our Book 14 video tour and gallery) looking undeniably bad-ass on her home turf. The new screenshots can be found at the end of our gallery, along with the other pictures we've collected from Book 14 so far.

Lord of the Rings Online's Book 14 hasn't even released yet, and already we're getting previews of their first paid expansion: Mines of Moria. In a recent interview with Jeffrey Steefel, the folks at Total PC Gaming were able to squeeze out some new info on Mines of Moria, including the top question on everyone's mind: Will we fight the Balrog?

Of course the answer is yes. How many global protests would erupt if players discovered they wouldn't have the opportunity to fight the mighty Balrog? Not only that, the Mines promise to be much more than were shown in the movie. Considering the fact that Forochel was created from a few paragraphs of Tolkien's work, Moria should be an amazing experience. The next chapter in the Lord of the Rings Online saga will soon be hitting the live servers, and to whet our appetites Turbine has released a series of images showcasing the titular Ring-forges of Eregion. This beautiful elven area will feature heavily in the upcoming Book 14 patch, the last before the upcoming Mines of Moria expansion. In addition to numerous quality of life improvements, it sounds as though players will be able to fully explore the tragic history of the Eregion area - the home of every one of the Ring Wraiths' binding symbols.

We're going to have some hands-on time with Book 14 soon enough. Be sure to keep your eyes on the site for future LOTRO updates.

These instances will receive significant tweaks to the gameplay and new armor sets will either be added or greatly improved to add balance. In addition, many of the epic storyline quests will be reworked to add replayability. You can then access any of these replayable quests by talking to a Sage of Eriador who is located near the reflecting pools of the pertaining instances. As Turbine has shown in past Lord of the Rings Online events, they certainly know how to throw a party. The best part is the fact that these parties keep getting better and better each year! This year will certainly follow that trend as the Summer Festival quickly approaches Middle-earth. As of yet, the festival hasn't gone live, but if you'd like to enjoy the celebrations before they hit the live server, you have two choices: you can roll up a character on Roheryn or you can read this guide. That's right, we here at Massively have done all the dirty work for you so you can be fully prepared to get the most from your Summer Festival experience.

As with last year's festival, this year's event is celebrated under different names for each race of Middle-earth. For the Hobbits it's called Lithe Days. For the Men, it is referred to as Summerdays. It is Summerfest for the Dwarves and the Festival of Enedhin for the Elves. Each festival is celebrated in different areas of the map, and most of these festivals share very similar events.

As Lord of the Rings Online's newest book approaches release date, we can't help but get excited by every ounce of news that abounds. Book 14: The Ringforges of Eregion will expose players to many new concepts and improvements on older gameplay features that have proven popular.

By finally getting the Fellowship out of Rivendell, we can start looking forward to that trek to Mount Doom. This lets us explore the tremendous lore of Eregion and eventually Moria, just in time for the release of LotRO's first expansion Mines of Moria which is set to release later this fall. Session Play will make an expanded comeback for Book 14, with promises of more involvement as other creatures (think Chicken Play and Ranger/Troll Play in the Ettenmoors) on the horizon. Large-scale battlefields will also be introduced, as these server-wide events will immerse players into the on-going war in Middle-earth.

Lord of the Rings Online has revealed their newest content patch, Book 14, on the preview servers this week. This is very exciting news, as it means we can try out the newest game changes before Book 14 hits the live servers.

We realize that sometimes downloading what is essentially an entirely new game for the sake of previewing content may not be your cup of tea, so we've put together this extensive visual guide to let you know just how useful this preview server can be. For example, did you know that you can instantly level to 20, 30, 40 or 50 quiet easily? Did you know that you can max out all reputation, renown, infamy, Book quests, traits and more just as easily? You will also get a full range of top-level items and gold to begin your journey. This server is not only great for trying out the new content for an upcoming Book, but it is also perfect for trying out other classes at max level to see if they're really something you want to pursue throughout the game. This applies to both regular characters and Monster players as well!

Lord of the Rings Online, Book 14: The Ring-forges of Eregion has just hit the preview server Roheryn, and the extensive patch notes are posted! To see the new content, you will need to download the Turbine Download Manager, which is currently in its second stage of beta itself, allowing new and current players much easier access into the preview content.

So let's get a glimpse into some of the biggest features of this new patch:

  • Monster Play emotes are being introduced, complete with racial-specific emotes that can be achieved through deeds.
  • Monster Play races have several improvements and balance measures, especially with the Weaver.
  • New class improvements including several for the Burglar and Captain, plus the inclusion of varying instrument sounds and animations to correlate with the actual instruments being played by your Minstrel (not just the lute!)
  • The Diminishing Returns system is set into place with vast improvements.
  • Plus changes to Crafting, new dye, new outfits, new quests, UI fixes, new items and much, much more!

The latest House of Commons dev chat has finished for Lord of the Rings Online, and in this one we get a few more small glimpses into what we can expect with Book 14. The usual suspects -- Keth, Scenario, Patience and Avon -- were on-hand to answer player questions live at Stratics.

Most of the questions delivered by players concerned seasonal events, as this seems to be extremely popular lately. The devs say there will be another event this summer, and a "scary" event in the fall, presumably for Halloween. They go on to explain some details of Book 14, citing the fact that it will mainly be compiled of small changes and bug fixes in anticipation of the first paid expansion for LotRO: Mines of Moria. This expansion's two new classes -- the Warden and the Runekeeper -- are also explained in relation to their class roles.

In the second part of MMORPG's interview with Lord of the Rings Online's Executive Producer Jeffrey Steefel, we learn more about the final stages of development with LotRO's Book 14. Steefel discusses exactly how this final book of the first volume will unfold before the Mines of Moria expansion arrives on the scene. He also mentions the fact that Moria will not be considered Book 15, but instead be referred to as the first book of Volume 2.

Despite the wild success of the fishing system, there will not be another hobby introduced until Moria, he says. The live event system, which has been in under-the-radar development since launch, is the largest focus of Book 14 . With a little help from their cohorts at Asheron's Call, they will build a new event-triggering system based on a number of variables including a schedule, a time of day, a specific day or other in-game triggers. This feature seems to add more dimension to what has already proven to be one of the most incredible parts of this immersive game.

In line with the recent interview at MMORPG.com, Lord of the Rings Online's Jeffrey Steefel speaks in another interview with Ten Ton Hammer regarding the plans to bring LotRO to Korean audiences. This is something that has been discussed for quite a long time now, but with the Korean release imminent, we now get into the details of this launch and what LotRO hopes to offer to this specific audience.

One of the most important points made in this article is the projected number of players who could potentially be involved with this game at launch. While Steefel is reluctant to give figures, he says that with half the population of Korea playing online games (which would be a potential market of almost 37 million people), "the numbers could be astounding," he says.

Considering the fact that Lord of the Rings Online's Book 14 should be just around the corner, it's always great to get those little tidbits of information fed to us from the devs to keep us excited. This time though, we get fed a whole lot more than just a tidbit, we get some detailed information on some important changes that will be made to Monster Play with Book 14.

First there's the updates to crowd control and diminishing returns, namely the fact that root and daze effects will now share diminishing returns. Then there's the new revamp of the Weaver in PvMP, giving what promises to be a monster class that is more effective in battle. Finally, what we've all been waiting for: emotes for the monsters! This large list includes such favorites as cheer, dance1 and tantrum. It's certainly about time the monsters got a little RP love, too!

The Stratics team is at it once again bringing us the most recent House of Commons dev chat log with the LotRO developers. In this one, we get some treats in regards to Book 14 information, and the highly-anticipated first true expansion to the game: Mines of Moria.

So we're all busy people right? How about a quick summary of the topics in this log?

  • An improved Monster Play login screen is in the works, with no definite timeframe yet.
  • Since Book 13 focused so much on solo play, expect Book 14 to refocus on group play.
  • Three new 6-man instances will be be introduced, as well as new deeds for the Urugarth, Carn Dum, Barad Gularan and Annuminas instances.
  • Two new session instances will be introduced. These will not be at the level of the chicken play, but they do have plans for several more with MoM.
  • One of the core focuses with MoM is character customization and improvements as far as traits and new features.
  • The next Hobby is almost ready, with many more to come.
  • Poison will not be introduced for the good guys, as it is restricted in Tolkien lore to evil use only.

Book 13 hasn't even released yet and we're already salivating over Book 14 and the first LotRO paid expansion: The Mines of Moria. In a recent interview with Executive Producer Jeffery Steefel, we learn a few more details on the upcoming expansion and a sneak peek into Book 14.

The Mines of Moria will open up several new regions to explore, including Lothlorian and Eregion as well. The main focus will be on Moria of course, which will expand above and below the Misty Mountains in a series of tunnels and underground chambers to keep your characters cautious of what lies around each and every corner. Of course before Moria, we will be treated to Book 14 where players will explore the ring forge in Eregion where the three rings of the Elves were made. The Shadows of Angmar storyline will conclude with this book, yet tie into Moria and what it has to offer our stalwart fellowship on their way to Mordor.
