There will be a Lindens vs. residents <a href="http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/12/21/snowball-fight-snowball-fight/">snowball fight</a> in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life"><em>Second Life</em></a> in the following regions from 3 - 5 PM, SLT: <a href="http://slurl.com/secondlife/Eldridge/128/128/0">Eldridge</a>, <a href="http://slurl.com/secondlife/Hatton/128/128/0">Hatton</a>, <a href="http://slurl.com/secondlife/Solomon/128/128/0">Solomon</a>, <a href="http://slurl.com/secondlife/Hume/128/128/0">Hume</a>, <a href="http://slurl.com/secondlife/Kariba/128/128/0">Kariba</a> and <a href="http://slurl.com/secondlife/Chukchi/128/128/0">Chukchi</a>. This will be counted Round 3 in a series of snowball fights having begun earlier today at 5 AM. Man, 5 AM? I guess being hit by a snowball is one way to wake yourself up that early.<br /><br />It's not made clear in the blogpost how this will happen, but presumably there will be free animations/objects to handle everything. If anyone can make it to these, give 'em hell for Akela! This comes from a <a href="http://news.zdnet.co.uk/emergingtech/0,1000000183,39291065,00.htm?r=2">ZDNet report </a>on Kyte's talk about the potential of electronic currencies to reduce overhead costs for pretty much every one. He said Singapore has already introduced an electronic currency and that the rest of the world is watching what happens there.<br /><br />He also said, though, that online currencies like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life"><em>Second Life's</em></a> Linden Dollar carry with them security issues that create "phenomenal opportunities for money laundering and tax evasion." Those issues would have to be resolved before online currencies similar to the L$ or <em>EVE Online</em>'s ISK can be used with confidence in the real world.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.worldsinmotion.biz/2007/11/virtual_worlds_inspiring_a_pus.php">Worlds in Motion</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/27/financial-bigwig-says-virtual-worlds-leading-digital-currency-ch/">Financial bigwig says virtual worlds leading digital currency charge</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 27 Nov 2007 07:00:00 EST. If you're in the American Northeast and you love games, you might be interested to know that the <a href="http://www.bos.frb.org/">Federal Reserve Bank of Boston</a> is <a href="http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2007/10/federal_reserve_of_boston_exhi.php">hosting an exhibition</a> about the role computer games have played in New England's economic development, and that said exhibit includes coverage of MMOs. This is all part of their <a href="http://www.economicadventure.org/">New England Economic Adventure</a> program.<br /><br />Subjects of the exhibition span from the birth of computer games -- <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spacewar%21"><em>Spacewar!</em>'s</a> creation at MIT, according to the press release -- to present day titles like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>,<em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-galaxies/">Star Wars Galaxies</a></em>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life/"><em>Second Life</em></a>. Organizers hope the exhibits will teach kids how technological innovation and entrepreneurship can spur economic growth. <a href="http://www.arcade-history.com/">Old-school arcade games</a> will be free to play at the exhibit too.<br /><br />If you ask us, the folks at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston have come up with a brilliant plan -- bait kids with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/16/real-life-frogger-or-roomba-hacking-is-fun/">Frogger</a>, then make them learn something!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/exhibition-teaches-youth-about-wow-second-life/">Exhibition teaches youth about WoW, Second Life</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 31 Oct 2007 19:31:00 EST. Dennis Kucinich, whose biggest talking point as a presidential candidate has probably been his strong stance against the Iraq War from the beginning, has <a href="http://www.virtualworldsnews.com/2007/10/dennis-kucinich.html">created his own headquarters</a> inside the Lindens' little universe. And as you can see above, things are pretty swank, if a little deserted.<br /><br />Looks like there's a few good discussion and hangout areas (I really like the podium in the atrium with the flowing curtains), and a few tents where you can "purchase" videos or t-shirts. Doesn't seem like the sim will be a huge draw just by itself, but if Kucinich's campaign actually puts it to good use (would be really fun, I'd wager, to spend an night watching the primary returns come in from there), it could be a good time.<br /><br />And Kucinich isn't the only presidential hopeful in SL-- Former Senator from Alaska <a href="http://govirtualforgravel.wordpress.com/2007/05/29/want-to-pay-us-a-visit-how-to-visit-sen-gravel-in-second-life/">Mike Gravel has a sim</a> in there as well. Have any of the Republican candidates shown up in a virtual world, or do they just consider the whole thing a waste of time? Wait-- looks like <a href="http://techpresident.com/blog/entry/295/ron_paul_gets_his_second_life_on">Ron Paul has a setup in-world</a>, too.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/10/13/kucinich-comes-to-second-life/">Kucinich comes to Second Life</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 13 Oct 2007 12:44:00 EST.
