It looks like the beta testers for Star Trek Online have been doing their job well, and Cryptic has been listening. As we mentioned a few days ago, the State of the Game address touched on these changes, but the official patch notes are now up and the update is live.

The list of fixes and changes is huge, but they're not done yet. If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the patch notes, you'll see a list of "known issues", presumably there to say "we know and we are working on it."

The most interesting section of the notes, however, is listed at the top under "headline updates." Players will find that the level cap is removed, Cardassian and Romulan Sectors are open for Federation players, and that they can scan for the nearest anomaly via the MiniMap HUD. Bridge officers are a bit more interesting too: when they join your crew they'll come with a basic customization option, and as they advance they'll periodically request transfers. Finally, as you enter a new Sector Block, you'll hear a familiar voice. Leonard Nimoy has provided an audio journal overview for each Sector Block.

While these are just the high points of this patch, the list is much, much longer and warrants a look from anyone who's participated in beta testing.

We recently showed you a video of Zachary Quinto -- Spock Reloaded, if you will -- doing voice work for Star Trek Online. Quinto won't be reprising his role as the famous Vulcan though, and will instead guide new players through the tutorial as an Emergency Medical Hologram. Now we've come across footage of Leonard Nimoy lending his voice as well for Cryptic's massively multiplayer take on the Star Trek IP. He'll be providing the narration that brings players up to date with events in Star Trek Online's setting.

Last night we noted that videos and information had become available from the grand unveiling of Star Trek Online, Cryptic's newest in-development game. While there isn't a ton of information out there, there is quite a bit of coverage, and we've got the rundown for you this morning. Our own sister site Big Download has a great highlight reel from the event, noting that there are only going to be two factions at game launch. 1up has an extensive liveblog of the event, which gets point for catching all the nuances but is at about Warp Factor 8 for Trekkie-hating snark.

Though the liveblog gives the idea short shrift, we think the thought that you might be able to go onto other players' ships is particularly interesting. Player-created content, perhaps? Combine that with a Web 2.0 website where players can show off their ships online, and you've got a deep space version of Better Homes and Gardens. The official site offers something almost as good as a home decoration magazine: a chance to win a lifetime subscription to STO when it is released. So you can't make it to the Sunday, August 10th Las Vegas Star Trek convention to see Leonard Nimoy reveal Star Trek Online to a huge crowd of Trekkies? (Or Trekkers, we don't really know) We understand that you probably feel left out, especially considering that Cryptic is going to be showing live gameplay footage at the convention. Well worry not, for Cryptic has released the webcast information that allows all interested parties to watch as well. Commence rejoicing drive!

You can follow this usefully highlighted link at 1:30pm PDT this Sunday, August 10th to watch all the commotion. Who knows? You could possibly get so excited over seeing Star Trek Online actually being played that you knock over your soda/water/coffee (depending on your timezone) but still don't care, because of how excited you are! Even if beverage knock-age doesn't occur, we're pretty certain most of you will be excited regardless.

You may know him as the the singer of the late 60's mega-hit The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins, but others remember Leonard Nimoy for something else. What could possibly top that masterpiece, you might ask? He also appeared on a little TV show called Star Trek as the pointy-eared Spock. You may have heard of him.

However, the real news here is the fact that Mr. Nimoy will be appearing at the Las Vegas unveiling of Star Trek Online, courtesy of Cryptic Studios. This will take place this coming Sunday, August 10th at the Gene Roddenberry Theater at the Las Vegas Hilton. The event will also play host to the first public showing of gameplay footage and will be shown as a live webcast on the main website for those who can't attend.
