	<a href="http://www.massively.com/category/final-fantasy-xi"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em>'s</a> March version update has hit the live servers, and it brings with it a few new bits of content as well as a wealth of updates and adjustments to current systems. The big new feature with this content update is the new Legion battle system, which "is a new battle system intended to challenge high-level adventurers in alliances of eighteen to thirty-six combatants."<br />
	<br />
	The Legion system seems to play out like a cross between a survival and a time-attack game mode wherein players are tasked with eliminating as many high-level notorious monsters as they can within a 30-minute time limit. Each notorious monster the team successfully defeats will yield valuable items and Legion points that can be redeemed for a number of rewards. For <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/20/wings-over-atreia-all-i-want-for-solorius-is/">Solorius</a>, I expounded on my wish list for <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/"><em>Aion</em></a>, detailing things I wanted to see in game. Now, however, 'tis the season to express thankfulness for that which we have. While contemplating the many things I am grateful for in my life, I also considered the things that I am grateful for in the world of Atreia. Sure, things are not perfect (what world, real or pixelated, is?), and there are problems, bugs, and things I still hope are changed or added, but that does not diminish the fact that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> still offers many things to gamers in general -- and me in particular.<br />
<br />
Originally slated to release during the holiday, this topic was preempted by last week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/21/wings-over-atreia-tickets-please/">announcement</a>. No matter -- I certainly don't mind stretching out the season of gratitude. So while it might be more trendy to troll and spread hate, I dedicate this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/wings-over-atreia">Wings Over Atreia</a> to just saying thanks.<br />

More than just a nod to one of my favorite songs, the title is a tip off that this week will involve another episode of our favorite I-wish-it-only-happened-to-someone-else show: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/daevas-of-our-lives/"> Daevas of Our Lives</a>. Yes folks, despite the the attempts of many -- though unfortunately not all -- to avoid the steaming piles left on the roads in the wake of the dreaded Drama Llama, sometimes someone flings the stuff around and you just can't dodge fast enough to avoid the splatter. And that smell doesn't disappear when you log out.<br />
<br />
A couple of weeks ago, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/wings-over-atreia">Wings Over Atreia</a> took a look at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/22/wings-over-atreia-till-log-do-us-part/">relationships</a> within <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a>. As pointed out then, not all relationships within game or legion are bad, but the propensity for drama is certainly higher. Those who share too much personal information soon find that the situation becomes uncomfortable for them -- or others -- when things start going wrong. And nothing feeds a hungry Drama Llama like a relationship gone bad.<br />

<em>The sounds of the bluetail crestliches filled the air as the creamy white leaves drifted about on the breeze. Lifting his muscular arms encased in formal attire instead of the customary platemail, Pwnzoo stretched and rolled his shoulders, trying to relax as he waited, eyes avoiding the guests who arrayed themselves around him. </em>Soon,<em> he thought. </em>My sweetheart will arrive soon and all will be well. <em>He cracked his neck and took a deep breath.</em><br />
<br />
Relationships. They are everywhere; heck, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> even nods (and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/18/wings-over-atreia-milking-the-cash-cow/">markets</a>) to relationships by offering a wedding dress/tuxedo through the NCsoft Store. When something commands as much of your time and attention as playing your favorite MMO does, relationships of some type are bound to form. And some are even lucky enough to have their real-life partners play right alongside them; wife-aggro takes on a whole new meaning when she shanghais you for an Udas Temple run!<br />
<br />
Whether they're in-game, a part of real life, or just an online fling love affair, relationships can and do have a profound affect on game play in <em>Aion</em> for everyone, not just those within said relationship. And while a Balaur's share of the effect is drama, that luckily is not the totality of it! Sometimes relationships create stability and camaraderie for groups and are beneficial to the community.<br />

There are a few constants that dog my adventures into every MMO.  I will <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/20/storyboard-say-yes-to-the-dress/">play a female character even though I am a man</a>, I will <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pet-class/">go nuts over pet classes</a> if they are available, I will probably create <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/alts/">a legion of alts</a> before ever hitting the level cap, and I will wear stylish hats even if the stats aren't the greatest.  But above all of that, the biggest constant in my playing career is that I almost always refuse to pick MMO classes that are extremely popular.<br />
<br />
I think it's because I -- like probably most of you -- like to feel unique in games, even though it's usually difficult to achieve.  Choosing a class that's in the minority helps with that feeling, and conversely, going with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/fotm/">FOTM</a> or whatever the kids are calling it these days makes me feel like I've got my unique snowflake status revoked.<br />
<br />
So is this insane?  Do you allow class popularity to influence your desire to play it, or do you just go with whatever sounds like the most fun?<br />

	It's sometimes hard to believe that MMOs and online gaming in its current form are both relatively new. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/20/the-gaming-renaissance/">In a single generation</a>, online gaming has gone from a technical infeasibility to a global industry worth billions. The list of MMOs is constantly growing, and the line between MMOs and other online games blurs more every year. In the past few years, we've seen a massive rise in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/11/redefining-mmos-the-massive-money-of-microtransactions/">popularity of microtransaction-supported</a> and free-to-play MMOs. Other online games like <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/league-of-legends"><em>League of Legends</em></a> and <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/heroes-of-newerth"><em>Heroes of Newerth</em></a> have adopted similar strategies, using a cash shop to fund ongoing development.<br />
	<br />
	There are now lots of heavily community-based games out there that for one reason or another <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/30/redefining-mmos-more-developers-weigh-in/">aren't quite MMOs</a>. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/redefining-mmos-pesky-persistence/">lack of shared persistent worlds</a> in some online games or the relatively small size of server communities can render the game not-so-"massive," but persistent stats, character progression, cohesive communities, or other qualities make them more than just another online game.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/07/wings-over-atreia-anticipaaaaaaaaaaaation/">Last week's article</a> seems to have struck a nerve. I feel like I know more of you now on a more personal level. And that's not just because I skulk around Atreia spying! The thoughts and comments you have shared have reaffirmed how universal our experiences are; what we think is a slightly unique situation is really just like so many others (OK, maybe not the legionmate who walks around in a duck suit, but others). You know the saying "You are unique dear, just like everyone else." Whether we have <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/26/wings-over-atreia-living-la-vida-asmo/">Black wings</a> or white, whether we're a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/04/wings-over-atreia-to-rift-or-not-to-rift-that-is-the-question/">PvPer</a> or even a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/15/wings-over-atreia-killed-by-a-carebear/">carebear</a>, many of our hopes for <em><a href="http://na.aiononline.com/">Aion</a></em> are really quite similar.<br />
<br />
But I digress. As promised, this week I continue with my happy rave (it's better than a rant, yes?) about some of the treats promised us in the upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/07/aion-2-5-patch-notes-translated-lots-of-new-content-incoming/">2.5 patch</a>. And just like I would with a proper dessert, I saved the best for last. Or at least my favorite! This week, we look more in-depth at additional pets, additional instances, and additions to legions.<br />

It happens. You might be trucking along, grinding your own business when BAM! Suddenly your /l chat is gone. What the... ? Yup, your legion just disbanded. Or perhaps the leader just disappears offline for an extended period of time. Could be that the leadership drives members away by its actions (or inaction). So the death knell tolls.<br />

With reasons ranging from real life (work, family) to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/27/aion-producer-talks-casual-leveling/">game mechanics</a> (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/22/wings-over-atreia-easy-button/">boredom</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/21/wings-over-atreia-conquering-the-level-grind/">frustration</a>) to the most frequent culprit, drama (cyber-relationships gone bad, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/01/wings-over-atreia-daevas-of-our-lives-the-siege/">over-inflated egos</a>, power-hungry control freaks), legions fold. It is a fact of gaming -- though not always a negative one. But in <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/"><em>Aion</em></a>, where reputation, ranking, and Abyss contribution are significant factors to players, the death of a legion can have more consequences than just missing a chat channel. If you are lucky and have forewarning, you can plan ahead to minimize the impact on your gaming experience.<br />

Sound familiar? No, this isn't a job interview -- this is the rigmarole many players experience simply to get into a group in <a href="http://us.ncsoft.com/en/">NCsoft's</a> <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/"><em>Aion</em></a>. You might think that time of day or availability of people in the right level range would have the most affect on forming up a group, whether in a legion or a PUG. Instead, players often must contend with an entirely different beast before even stepping foot into an instance: group elitism.<br />
<br />
Unless you have a regular group of friends with identical play times or a very supportive legion, you are apt to occasionally find yourself in the situation of seeking a group while traipsing about Atreia. Even with a regular group, there are going to be times you are left more-or-less on your own and just want to get something done. Thus begins the (oft times unpleasant) task of creating or finding a group. Like a microcosm of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/30/wings-over-atreia-daevas-of-our-lives/">drama</a> played out in short spurts, group formation showcases a variety of less-than-desirable attributes: greed; envy; lust; selfishness; and inflated egos. Just how exclusive can this process become? Your inclusion could ride solely on your class, equipment, or skill set, and have nothing to do with your ability and skill as a player. Heck, even <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/18/wings-over-atreia-whats-in-a-name/">your name</a> may keep you out of groups.<br />

In the first two parts of this guide to Research in <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, I covered <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/13/eve-evolved-research-tech-1-blueprints/">the basics of Tech 1 blueprint research</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/20/eve-evolved-research-invention-and-tech-2/">the "Invention" system</a> that allows players to make their own Tech 2 blueprint copies. The reverse engineering process used to make Tech 3 blueprints is a lot like invention except with a new set of materials, equipment and skills. Though the process used to create it will be familiar to inventors, the end product is a strange beast. Unlike Tech 2, Tech 3 isn't just a straight improvement over lower tech levels and doesn't use Tech 1 or 2 as a base. Instead, it's an entirely new technology used to make <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/06/eve-evolved-tech-3-strategic-cruisers/">custom, modular ships</a>. At the moment, the only Tech 3 products we have are the modular "Strategic Cruiser" class but more is planned for future patches. Tech 3 frigates are rumoured to be next on the development table and it's entirely possible that we'll see strange new Tech 3 modules thrown into the mix too at some point.<br />

In today's part of this bumper guide to research, I look into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>'s newest addition to the researcher's repertoire as I examine Tech 3 and "Reverse Engineering". With <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/apocrypha/">Apocrypha</a></em> expansion came an entire new class of ship. Tech 3 Strategic Cruisers represent a new wave of technology in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>. Rather than being simply improved versions of the existing Tech 2 ships, Strategic Cruisers are modular ships reverse engineered from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/19/eve-evolved-untangling-the-mystery-of-the-sleepers/">ancient Sleeper and Talocan components</a>. They allow players to design their own ship from a base hull and a set of five subsystems. Each subsystem has four options, with a fifth possibly in the works. Original designs called for the ship to improve as it was used, but this was replaced with a set of rank 1 skills and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gallery/eve-strategic-cruisers/2261582/">you lose a level of one of them</a> if your ship is destroyed. A fully fit Tech 3 ship originally would have cost you upwards of two billion isk but prices have since dropped to around the 600 million mark and they're still falling. <br /><em>EVE</em> <em>Online</em>'s setting of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">New Eden is one with a rich backstory</a>, which is always being fleshed out further through regular Chronicles (<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/archive.asp">short stories found on the game's official site</a>), video footage tied into the game's lore and, as of last year, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/13/the-empyrean-age-qanda-with-author-tony-gonzales/">brought to life in the <em>Empyrean</em> <em>Age</em> novel</a>. <br /><br />While not all players opt to delve into this aspect of the game, the content is there to immerse yourself in. <br />As March 10th draws ever closer, <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a><em>'</em>s Apocrypha expansion is coming more and more into focus. Information on the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/09/eve-evolved-gear-up-for-wormhole-exploration/">new game mechanics</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/25/eve-onlines-first-epic-mission-arc-to-arrive-with-apocrypha-exp/">and content</a> is being released in the form of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/15/eve-dev-blog-explains-new-ship-fitting-screen-saveable-configur/">developer blogs</a> and the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/apocrypha/index.html">official expansion page</a> complete with screenshots and artwork is already up. Most importantly, a test version of the expansion is live on Singularity, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>'s main test server. Like any good journalist, I took my camera crew onto the test server to get some pictures of Apocrypha in action.
