<a href="www.warhammeronline.com" style="font-style: italic;">Warhammer Online</a> players are in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/12/test-server-patch-notes-for-warhammers-bitter-rivals-event-re/">midst of the Bitter Rivals</a> live event, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/the-daily-grind-what-excites-you-most-about-wars-call-to-arms/">plus another big new patch</a>. I'm going to guess that it probably took a lot of development muscle to get the Black Guard, Knight of the Blazing Sun, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/massively-re-arms-for-war-slayer/">Slayer</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/massively-re-arms-for-war-meet-da-choppa/">Choppa</a> in a fun, playable shape. Not to mention the improvements to open RvR, Scenarios, PvE and general quality of life fixes.<br /><br />I have no doubt that the east coast developer has the next several patches planned out to some degree. Nonetheless, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mythic/">Mythic</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Warhammer-Online/" style="font-style: italic;">Warhammer Online</a> and its community are at a development crossroads -- and so today I'm going to explore a few possibilities.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/07/the-digital-continuum-beyond-warhammer-online-patch-1-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: Beyond Warhammer Online patch 1.2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/07/the-digital-continuum-beyond-warhammer-online-patch-1-2/">The Digital Continuum: Beyond Warhammer Online patch 1.2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 07 Mar 2009 12:00:00 EST. All those <em><a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a></em> players who where playing along with the Heavy Metal event in November will be happy to know that today <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=477">the fruits of their labor has arrived</a>. That's right: Today, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mythic/">Mythic</a> brings us Black Guards and Knights of the Blazing Sun! For those who didn't finish <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/heavy-metal/">the full Heavy Metal event</a>, don't worry, the classes will become available to everyone next week. Servers are going down at 3:30AM PST / 6:30AM EST for North American players with Oceanic servers following at 9:00AM EST. No specific time-frame was given for the updating process, so we'll just have to sit tight and wait it out.<br /><br />New classes aren't the only thing found in this patch, however. There's a ton of general game updates, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/27/warhammer-online-rvr-performance-and-stability-improvements-fort/">performance updates</a>, bug fixes and class tweaks coming with the 1.0.6 patch, too. In fact, there are so many class tweaks that Bright Wizards, Chosen, Engineers, Ironbreakers, Maguses (Magi?), Shadow Warriors, Sorcerers, Squig Herders and Swordmasters are all getting their mastery points refunded. Combat also seems to be a big focus, with a ton of improvements to auto-attack animations, ability responsiveness, morale responsiveness and root responsiveness.<br /><br />All in all, we're pretty impressed with Mythic on this patch, as it delivers some substantial changes that many players have been waiting to see.<hr />

Despite the excitement some had about being able to play a <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com/armiesofWAR/empire/KnightoftheBS.php">Knight of the Blazing Sun</a> or a <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com/armiesofWAR/darkelves/BlackGuard.php">Black Guard</a> early through goal completion in the Heavy Metal event, there have been some issues and complaints that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>WAR</em></a> players have been reporting -- particularly in regards to unfinished tasks and scenario launch rates at Reikland Factory. <br /><br /><em>Warhammer Online</em> community coordinator James Nichols <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=467">made an announcement</a> about what <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic-entertainment">Mythic</a> is doing to address these concerns:<br /><br />
<ul>
    <li><em>By popular request, players will now be able to complete previous daily tasks for the Heavy Metal event. A task will continue to unlock each day and remain open until the end of the event allowing players to complete all the tasks at their convenience. Please Note: If you notice an apparent loss of credit for any previous days you have already completed simply exit the game entirely and log back in to correct this issue. </em></li>
</ul>
<ul>
    <li><em>Reikland Factory: Improvements have been made to potentially increase the rate at which the scenario launches.</em></li>
</ul>
How have your own experiences with <em>WAR's</em> Heavy Metal live event been?<hr />

The Book of Grudges, a <em><a href="www.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a></em> blog, is <a href="http://bookofgrudges.wordpress.com/2008/11/21/bringing-in-new-classes/">taking an interesting look</a> at <em><a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com">World of Warcraft</a></em>, <em><a href="http://www.lordoftherings.com">Lord of the Rings Online</a></em> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Warhammer-Online/">Warhammer Online</a></em> -- the big three, basically -- and the fact that each of them is currently adding classes to their game worlds. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/27/the-daily-grind-where-do-you-see-yourself-in-a-year-mmo-wise/">What's even more interesting</a> is that each of these three games is handling their new classes in very different fashions. Death Knights are a big epic instanced experiences; Runekeepers and Wardens are designed to be solo-able and compliment each other well and Knights of the Blazing Sun and Black Guards are being integrated into the game the game via a special in-game event.<br /><br />It's interesting that you could play each of the new class experiences in succession and none of them would operate in the same way. That's a surprisingly large amount of variety <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/15/the-digital-continuum-fantasys-upcoming-vacation/">between three very-fantasy titles</a> -- one of which is based in the origin of high-fantasy.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/21/a-look-at-the-new-classes-of-wow-lotro-and-war/">A look at the new classes of WoW, LotRO and WAR</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 14:30:00 EST. <p>Mythic dev Mark Jacobs writes that the combat and careers patches for <em><a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com/">Warhammer Online</a></em> will <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=454">not be appearing in patch 1.0.5</a> as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/07/what-warhammer-patch-1-05-means-for-you/">previously planned</a> and are instead being rescheduled for patch 1.0.6. <em>"Our plan was that no patch would make it through the [Public Test Servers] until we were sure that it was tested thoroughly and properly."</em> writes Jacobs, <em>"It was evident throughout the testing process that some of the changes needed to be reconsidered and some changed outright."</em></p>
<p>Patch 1.0.5 is going to deploy to live servers tomorrow (Tuesday, 18 November), with fixes/improvements to the Realm War system, and the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/29/heavy-metal-live-event-brings-two-new-careers-to-warhammer-onlin/">"Heavy Metal" Live Event </a>that sets the stage for the <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com/armiesofWAR/empire/KnightoftheBS.php">Knight of the Blazing Sun</a> and <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com/armiesofWAR/darkelves/BlackGuard.php">Blackguard</a>.</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/warhammer-combat-and-careers-patches-pushed-back/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Warhammer combat and careers patches pushed back</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/warhammer-combat-and-careers-patches-pushed-back/">Warhammer combat and careers patches pushed back</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Nov 2008 19:30:00 EST. In this month's newsletter we get not one, but <a href="http://warhammeronline.com/podcast/index.php">two production podcast videos</a> from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mythic/">Mythic</a> that discuss the Black Guard and Knight of the Blazing Sun careers. The downside is that they're not really the same type of animation-infused productions we've seen in the past. We're sure it's because everyone at Mythic is either working diligently on upcoming patches or taking a much needed break after launch. Either way, the videos do go into more detail about the returning tank classes than any of the recent text we've seen on the official <em><a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a></em> website. So if you're looking to learn more about things like mastery paths and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/28/mythic-working-on-expansion-and-new-new-classes/">how Paul Barnett interprets the classes</a>, you should definitely give the videos a look.<br /><br />We're looking forward to both the event and addition <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/25/latest-war-grab-bag-shows-off-high-level-armor/">of two more tank careers</a> to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Warhammer-Online/">Warhammer Online</a></em>. You can never have enough meat shields, after all.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/29/returning-war-classes-detailed-in-newest-production-podcasts/">Returning WAR classes detailed in newest production podcasts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 29 Oct 2008 17:00:00 EST. Much sooner than many were expecting, two new careers - the <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com/armiesofWAR/empire/KnightoftheBS.php">Knight of the Blazing Sun</a> and the <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com/armiesofWAR/darkelves/BlackGuard.php">Black Guard</a> - are to be introduced to <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Warhammer Online</span></a>. Rather than just slip them in with a patch, Mythic is making a <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/liveevents/2008HeavyMetal.php">festival of the event</a>. The classes won't be available to everyone at first; instead, by completing certain tasks, players will be able to unlock them early.<br /><em><br /></em>From November 17th when the event launches, a new tab in the Tome of Knowledge will take players to the Live Events page. There will be a new daily task placed on the page <em>each day,</em> and completing those tasks earns influence, public quest style; the ultimate prize, which will require a login and task completion each day, will be the ability to play the new classes a week before general release.<hr />

Anyone interested in taking a look at some of the highest armor sets offered in <em><a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a></em> should <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=397">check out the latest grab bag</a> from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mythic/">Mythic</a>, as it features many of them. In fact, it features exactly eight sets, with two images for the classes who can wear them. Something that immediately stands out about the appearance of the higher level armor is that Mythic's able to put together some very cool looking stuff. We're especially fond of the Black Orc, Marauder and Engineer armor sets featured.<br /><br />With <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/17/first-state-of-the-game-reveals-blazing-sun-knights-black-guard/">the December class additions coming</a>, we're really looking forward to seeing some armor sets for the Black Guard and Knight of the Blazing Sun. In fact, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/18/the-digital-continuum-december-updates-for-war/">a little voice in our heads</a> (not the bad kind!) tells us that Mythic could have reason to be going full throttle for those particular armor sets.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/25/latest-war-grab-bag-shows-off-high-level-armor/">Latest WAR grab bag shows off high-level armor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 25 Oct 2008 09:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com" style="font-style: italic;">Warhammer Online</a> has its flaws that like to run up and slap you in the face from time to time -- it can put a damper on the fun. Lucky for us, one of the strengths found in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Warhammer-Online/" style="font-style: italic;">Warhammer Online</a> actually comes from its design team, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mythic">Mythic Entertainment</a>. These guys (and gals!) have been stringing together a daisy-chain of updates and just yesterday <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/17/first-state-of-the-game-reveals-blazing-sun-knights-black-guard/">announced their first big content release</a> only one month out of launch. The update seems all good, but I do have a couple of gripes.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/18/the-digital-continuum-december-updates-for-war/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: December updates for WAR</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/18/the-digital-continuum-december-updates-for-war/">The Digital Continuum: December updates for WAR</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 18 Oct 2008 11:00:00 EST. I've given <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/09/the-digital-continuum-dark-elf-days-in-war/">my thoughts on the Dark Elf section</a> of <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a>, but now that the whole NDA is lifted I can finally speak about my experience with the beta as a whole. I've been in it for a long time. A really long time, in fact. We're talking about, well, since the thing started. Which gives me something more to say than the typical tester talking about this game. In my time interacting as a member of the beta community with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mythic/">Mythic</a> -- concerning <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online/">Warhammer Online</a>, of course -- I think I've seen more progress made on any MMO in the span of about a year than I have in any other in beta. And I've been in a lot of them.<br /><br />So what's the big deal? New MMOs are always facing the issue of going up against <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com">World of Warcraft's</a> several years of polishing. Everyone has always wondered what it would take to deal with that issue, too. Mythic seems to have decided it will take raw, unadulterated determination. The kind that a child displays when presented with the opportunity to have a new toy. It also helps to have a license that Blizzard themselves once attempted to acquire because of its depth. Ironic? Only if <span style="font-style: italic;">WAR</span> really does take a big chug out of the <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/">World of Warcraft</a> milkshake.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/23/the-digital-continuum-memoirs-of-a-war-beta-tester/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: Memoirs of a WAR beta tester</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/23/the-digital-continuum-memoirs-of-a-war-beta-tester/">The Digital Continuum: Memoirs of a WAR beta tester</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 23 Aug 2008 11:00:00 EST. Diet <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a>: same great taste, less content. Is it bad that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/11/ea-mythic-back-to-the-original-mythic-entertainment-name/">the recently re-branded</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic-entertainment/">Mythic Entertainment</a> just <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/11/mark-jacobs-announces-major-features-cut-from-warhammer-online/">cut out a large portion</a> of our <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online/">Warhammer Online</a> pie and put it in the deep freeze? Well it's certainly not good when a developer cuts content they've been talking about publicly for so long, especially when launch is only three or four months away. I've already written about why this MMO ode to classic tabletop trappings <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/08/the-digital-continuum-a-fork-in-the-road-for-war/">shouldn't be shoved onto shelves half-baked</a> and I still feel like I'd rather see a delay than see so much content cut. While there have been plenty of delays already, that doesn't mean more would have been intolerable. <br /><br />I'm going to try and take an honest look at what the removal of four capital cities and four classes means for <span style="font-style: italic;">Warhammer Online</span>. I will admit that when the news first hit, a vile and seemingly ancient sort of anger <a href="http://www.warhammeralliance.com/articles/showentry.php?e=76">began to boil up inside my lungs</a>. It was the onset of some form of draconian rage at the removal of so much content that I'd been personally invested in as a future player. I never really got into Chaos and planned on playing Dark Elves, but now a large part of that content is gone. At first I felt anger and confusion towards Mythic. It wasn't until after that initial knee-jerk anger passed that I was able to give some real thought to their choice and was able to consider the varied consequences.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/12/the-digital-continuum-diet-war/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: Diet WAR</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/12/the-digital-continuum-diet-war/">The Digital Continuum: Diet WAR</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 12 Jul 2008 15:30:00 EST.
