The KDF faction has always struggled in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/">Star Trek Online</a></em>, from its early perception among players as the game's red-headed stepchild of a PvP faction to the present day. But there are still dedicated Klingon players, and there's no shortage of love for the faction in the lore. So there will no doubt be many players happy that starting on October 6th, the Klingon's new and improved play experience will be <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/node/2637">up for players to enjoy on the test server</a>.<br />
<br />
In a significant departure from the past, Klingon players will now start well into the Lieutenant Commander rank, giving players a sizable jump in levels. The story arcs for the faction are now threaded together to alleviate the sometimes confusing structure of the story missions, giving a uniquely Klingon experience from start to finish. And as with all of the testing going on prior to the game's free-to-play conversion, players who clock in enough time to reach level 31 on a Klingon character will <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/node/2637">earn some bonus rewards</a> -- enough to stir a true warrior's blood for the honor of victory.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/05/star-trek-online-bringing-the-klingons-into-the-free-to-play-tes/">Star Trek Online bringing the Klingons into the free-to-play test realm</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 05 Oct 2011 22:00:00 EST. <em>Captain's Log, Stardate 64997.8...</em><br />
	<br />
	Hello, computer (and players)! Over the past couple of weeks, there has been much heated debate about microtransactions within MMOs. Whether those microtransactions involve an accessory for your character, additional character slots, or a new mount, players have mixed emotions on spending real money to obtain such items. No matter what your position is on the topic, one thing for certain is that microtransactions are not going to disappear. In fact, they seem to be the future when it comes to how most studios will be delivering exclusive content and items.<br />
	<br />
	<a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/" target="_blank"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> is no stranger to such transactions -- the infamous <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic" target="_blank">Cryptic</a> Store (<a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/store" target="_blank">C-Store</a>) is full of items priced from just a dollar all the way up to $25. If you are new to the game or have never made a purchase before, at first glance, you may be wondering what you should buy. While some items are simply there as cosmetic enhancements, some will actually help in your battle against your favorite enemy. To help shed some light on your choices, this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/" target="_blank">Captain Log</a> is going to explore the top 10 must-have C-Store items that every <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online" target="_blank"><em>STO</em></a> player should not leave spacedock without.</div>

<em>Captain's Log, Stardate 64977.3...</em><br />
<br />
Spock, Riker, Kira, Worf, Chakotay, and T'Pol. What do they all have in common? They are the notable men and women who served under their Captains as First Officer. Joret, Sito, Alyssa, Taurik, Sam and Geniveve. What do <em>they</em> all have in common? No one knows who the heck they are. In the world of Star Trek, these "unknowns" are the members of the lower decks, people whose work goes unnoticed, whose accomplishments are unacknowledged, and who are often killed off at the end of the episode when you finally <em>do</em> get to know them.<br />
<br />
While the ships in <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/" target="_blank"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> currently seem to be manned only by the Captain, his or her Bridge Officers (BOff), and some random crewmen walking around the ship, this is about to change. In the next couple months, get ready to welcome new members to your ship's lower decks. The Duty Officer (DOff) system will be adding a new form of gameplay to <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online" target="_blank"><em>STO</em></a> and give players even more ways to level characters and become immersed in the universe surrounding them. While there are a ton of random pieces of information about it floating out there, I think that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/" target="_blank">Captain's Log</a> is the perfect place to put it all together and give you a more concise picture of how it will work.<br />

Hey there, folks! Welcome back to another edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, Massively's rarely-coherent-but-always-fun look at <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/">Star Trek Online</a>. I have had just the <em>busiest</em> darn week, you betcha. I spent all weekend at <a href="http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/">New York Comic Con</a>, where I saw more than a few folks dressed to the nines in Star Trek gear, and then I started a shiny new day job on Monday. Phew!<br />
<br />
I've been thinking a lot about user-generated content lately. In <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/06/dan-stahl-talks-about-star-trek-onlines-user-generated-content/">a recent interview</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Daniel-Stahl/">Daniel Stahl</a> offers a few details on the subject, in which we learn a bit about the forthcoming system's abilities and limitations. What do we know about <em>STO's</em> UGC tools? What do we still not know -- mainly, when can we get in there and start crafting our own missions? Why, follow me past the jump to find out.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/14/captains-log-anticipating-stos-future-in-user-generated-conte/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Anticipating STO's future in user-generated content</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/14/captains-log-anticipating-stos-future-in-user-generated-conte/">Captain's Log: Anticipating STO's future in user-generated content</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 14 Oct 2010 15:00:00 EST. Newsflash! This just in: <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> has endured a turbulent life so far. You had no idea, right? Except for the part where <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a> has discussed that very topic for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/09/captains-log-did-cryptic-betray-the-spirit-of-star-trek/">the past</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/16/captains-log-five-features-sto-should-borrow-from-other-mmos/">two weeks</a> -- and who here doesn't hang on my <em>every</em> word? (Don't answer that.)<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO's</em></a> rocky road also features prominently in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/16/star-trek-online-rethinks-microtransactions-in-the-latest-state/">the latest state of the game letter</a> from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios</a>. Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Daniel-Stahl/">Daniel Stahl</a> offers some visions for the future of the game and drops some hints of what to expect in coming updates. He also comes <em>this close</em> to sharing frank information about <em>STO's</em> performance. So what does Stahl's vaguenesses imply, and what does Cryptic have in store for <em>STO</em>?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/23/captains-log-is-the-state-of-the-game-good-bad-or-ugly/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Is the state of the game good, bad or ugly?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/23/captains-log-is-the-state-of-the-game-good-bad-or-ugly/">Captain's Log: Is the state of the game good, bad or ugly?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 09:00:00 EST. Grab a party hat and some confetti, because it's time for an extra-special edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>. This week, we put aside <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/15/captains-log-the-c-store-and-the-perils-of-going-freemium/">recent</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/22/captains-log-per-character-c-store-services-ruin-everything-ev/">tribble-ations</a> in favor of some celebration: <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> is six months old!<br />
<br />
Can you believe <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios'</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> went live <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/02/massivelys-star-trek-online-launch-day-roundup/">half a year ago</a>? This Monday marks the big anniversary, and it sure has been a bumpy ride getting here. Awash in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/14/preview-made-available-for-star-trek-onlines-season-2/">new content</a>, and occasionally <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/18/star-trek-online-adds-more-c-store-options-and-controversy/">mired in controversy</a>, <em>STO</em> is older and wiser now. So let's scoop up the sands of time with our beach pail of reminiscence, as we fondly recall the past six months of <em>STO</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/29/captains-log-six-months-of-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Six months of Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/29/captains-log-six-months-of-star-trek-online/">Captain's Log: Six months of Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 29 Jul 2010 15:00:00 EST. Lieutenant, take the helm! It's time for another edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, our regular foray into the farthest reaches of <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. The big bombshell of the week -- no, not <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/07/the-daily-grind-real-id-do-we-finally-have-our-wow-killer/">that one</a> -- has left your humble captain with a serious case of <a href="http://www.shasta.com/suesgoodco/newcivilians/faq/qvapors.htm">the vapors</a>, so allow me a moment to collect myself. <br />
<br />
Unless you've been hiding on the holodeck for days -- a wise choice, <a href="http://www.newsweek.com/2010/07/07/surfing-the-summer-heat-wave.html">given the circumstances</a> here on Earth -- you surely have heard the news: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Craig-Zinkievich/">Craig Zinkievich</a> is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/01/craig-zinkievich-leaving-star-trek-onlines-bridge/">gone, baby, gone</a>. According to Zinkievich's <a href="http://startrekonline.com/node/1875/">farewell letter</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Daniel-Stahl/">Daniel Stahl</a>, formerly a producer on <em>STO</em>, has taken the helm in his place. <br />
<br />
I thought we'd briefly discuss Zinkievich's departure before moving on Stahl's <a href="http://www.jupiterbroadcasting.com/?p=2243">recent video interview</a> with the <a href="http://www.jupiterbroadcasting.com/">STOked podcast crew</a>, where he dropped some delicious hints about future content and provided insight into his mindset as <em>STO's</em> head honcho.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/08/captains-log-pondering-star-trek-onlines-executive-shakeup/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Pondering Star Trek Online's executive shakeup</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/08/captains-log-pondering-star-trek-onlines-executive-shakeup/">Captain's Log: Pondering Star Trek Online's executive shakeup</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 08 Jul 2010 12:00:00 EST. <br />
Hello again, everyone! Welcome to another installment of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, our weekly dose of <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> goodness. I trust you all had <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/06/captains-log-guide-to-the-klingon-tutorial/">a fine time with Captain Trout last week</a>, learning about the Klingon beginner's experience. While you were gone, the lovely engineers on the <em>U.S.S. Bob Wiley</em> have installed a brandy new graphics processor, so we're back up and running! <br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios</a> have had a busy week or so with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a>. First came <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/30/star-trek-online-offering-veteran-rewards-and-free-trials/">their big push</a> to welcome back players, which included a free weekend for lapsed subscribers. Then came the exciting news of Cryptic's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/10/ship-interiors-planned-in-the-near-future-for-star-trek-online/">development plans for the next three months</a>. And today saw the release of <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/node/1679">an update to Season 1.1</a>, which includes much-needed Memory Alpha improvements and the somewhat-delayed fourth Special Task Force mission, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/13/star-trek-online-takes-a-look-in-the-undine-terradome/">Undine Terradome</a>. I want to take this opportunity to highlight some of the incoming content that could make this the summer of <em>STO</em> -- and to ponder a few roadblocks that might get in the way.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/13/captains-log-a-look-into-the-future-of-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: A look into the future of Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/13/captains-log-a-look-into-the-future-of-star-trek-online/">Captain's Log: A look into the future of Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 13 May 2010 13:00:00 EST. <br />
Captain to engineering! We've been hit! How bad is it? Our graphics card is shot to oblivion, you say? Of all the dratted luck! Divert auxiliary power to onboard graphics processors. Oh, no, you're right, that's awful. Wow. Yeah, no, it's like <a href="http://www.ibiblio.org/GameBytes/issue18/greviews/ijones/indy3.gif">an old-school Lucasarts game</a> up in here. <br />
<br />
Oh, hey there, everyone. Welcome to a woefully damaged edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, Massively's weekly column on all things <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. Sadly, a Terran Federation attack knocked out our graphics card, and the <em>U.S.S. Bob Wiley</em> has seen better days. So while we limp to our nearest starbase for repairs -- Lieutenant Newegg assures me we'll have a new card replicated within three business days -- I'll hand this week's column over to our Klingon ambassador, Captain Trout. As we've <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/15/captains-log-beginners-guide-to-star-trek-online/">already covered</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/22/captains-log-more-beginners-guide-to-star-trek-online/">the Federation tutorial</a>, he'll explain the basics of the Klingon beginner's experience.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/06/captains-log-guide-to-the-klingon-tutorial/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Guide to the Klingon tutorial</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/06/captains-log-guide-to-the-klingon-tutorial/">Captain's Log: Guide to the Klingon tutorial</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 06 May 2010 12:00:00 EST. <br />
Welcome, one and all, to another edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, our weekly column on everyone's favorite <em>Star Trek</em> MMO, <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. I'm afraid I must renege once again on my promise to tackle the Klingon beginner experience. But I forgot that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios'</a> latest MMO will be 3 months old this Sunday!<br />
<br />
That's right! <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/"><em>STO</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/02/massivelys-star-trek-online-launch-day-roundup/">launched a whopping three months ago</a>, on Feb. 2, 2010. Why, it feels like just yesterday that my newly created Bajoran Science Officer took his first laggy footsteps on Earth Starbase in search of Commander Sulu. As we are wont to do with our favorite games here at Massively, let's look back at <em>STO</em>'s first few months and take stock of its past, present and future.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/29/captains-log-three-months-of-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Three months of Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/29/captains-log-three-months-of-star-trek-online/">Captain's Log: Three months of Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 29 Apr 2010 12:00:00 EST. There's a certain mystique that <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klingon">Klingons</a> hold for <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek">Star Trek</a> </em>fans, having shown up for many different stories in every show and even several movies. That's not even counting the fact that they have <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klingon_language">an entire language</a> to back them up. So it's probably not a huge surprise that the most recent <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Ask-Cryptic/">Ask Cryptic</a> has been <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/node/1275">dedicated to questions about the Klingon Empire</a> in <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. Players have enjoyed the concept, but there have been more than a few expressions of disappointment at the lack of non-PvP options for the faction and the customization available (or not available) to the participants.<br />
<br />
The short version is that many of the things being asked for by Klingon players are coming -- more customization, more ship types, and more options to advance oneself without blasting honorless Federation ships out of the sky. There's even a promise of opportunities for the two factions to interact outside of combat, although the question of capturing landmarks via PvP is met with a negative. One of the responses also hints that there may be yet more factions in the game. All of the questions may be <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/node/1275">found here</a>, which promise an interesting future for Klingons and Federation players alike in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/">Star Trek Online</a></em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/07/newest-responses-to-ask-cryptic-for-star-trek-online-talks-kling/">Newest responses to Ask Cryptic for Star Trek Online talks Klingons</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 07 Mar 2010 12:00:00 EST. That's not a challenge, although if you do think your screenshotting capabilities are rather impressive, you could always send some to our daily One Shots feature email! Perhaps you've been hearing a lot of buzz about <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> lately. Or, perhaps you're reading this article in the year 2018, after the robots have begun their bloody revolt. Either way, you've never been way into <em>Star Trek</em>, but find yourself curious about this new MMO based on the franchise. In that cast, this iteration of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a> is just for you.<br />
<br />
As a side note, this will be the last week you'll find this feature going live on Friday. Henceforth, a new Captain's Log will appear every Thursday -- so keep an eye out!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/22/captains-log-a-non-trekkie-guide-to-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: A non-trekkie guide to Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/22/captains-log-a-non-trekkie-guide-to-star-trek-online/">Captain's Log: A non-trekkie guide to Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 22 Jan 2010 17:00:00 EST. Rewards have, more often than not, been things that make your character better. You complete a quest and you get a new piece of equipment, or access to a new area, or even just a nice handful of experience toward the next level. But we've recently talked a bit about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/11/to-level-no-more-forever/">how leveling, and progression by extension, can get rather tedious</a>. <a href="http://spinksville.wordpress.com/">Spinksville</a> also talked about this, discussing <a href="http://spinksville.wordpress.com/2010/01/12/rewarding-the-character-vs-rewarding-the-player/">the differences between player rewards and character rewards</a>, with the former being general rewards that stick with the player and aren't contingent upon or related to power level.<br />
<br />
An excellent example is that of Klingons in <a href="http://startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. The race has been a staple of the series ever since it began, and the Klingon Empire is one of the major political factions in the game... but it's not initially accessible to players. You have to complete a mission or reach Level 6 in order to unlock the option of playing a Klingon. Similarly, <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> gates its first hero class, the Death Knight, by requiring a level 55 character before one can be created.<br />
<br />
Player rewards contribue less to a sense of avatar progress, but they also help keep the power level slightly lower, as well as providing benefits that you can take with you, so to speak. On the other hand, they're vulnerable to feeling less like rewards because they're unrelated to the character who obtained them. We've all been well-versed in the endgame grind for gear acquisition, however, so <a href="http://spinksville.wordpress.com/2010/01/12/rewarding-the-character-vs-rewarding-the-player/">the post's call for more player rewards</a> might be a welcome change for many of us.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/13/player-rewards-versus-character-rewards/">Player rewards versus character rewards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 13 Jan 2010 20:00:00 EST. Open beta is here and launch isn't far behind, which is of course why we're starting to see stuff like the recently revealed faction page for <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. While you can't look (or click) on them now, it's quite telling that Cardassian and Romulan faction symbols are there for the looking. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> has been pretty open with the fact that they plan to add new factions in the future, but the upfront listing of them causes us to wonder what the schedule is for the launch of faction number three.<br />
<br />
We really love the approach to this faction page, too. Why? Selecting a faction gives you the perspective of said faction, but from each side. That is to say, you get a Klingon's point of view of their own Empire, as well as the Federation. It's a nice touch of Trek that shows the men and women at Cryptic are keen to stick to the spirit of the series, even when outside of their own game. <br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/12/sto-website-adds-faction-page-hints-at-future-factions/">STO website adds faction page, hints at future factions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 12 Jan 2010 10:00:00 EST. We recently had the opportunity to ask <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic">Cryptic's</a> Jack Emmert a few questions regarding <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> and its PvP elements. With the looming open beta (tomorrow!) and similarly imminent February 2nd launch, we consider ourselves lucky to get some fairly definitive answers on topics like the game's Cryptic Store and the Klingon faction's future -- including if deeper customization is in the wings or not.<br />
<br />
It's a quick read, but with less than 24 hours until open beta kick starts, that's probably a good thing. We wouldn't want to take away from anyone's <em>Star Trek</em> movie marathon, which is obviously what everyone is doing the day before, right? If there's one thing that's almost more synonymous with <em>Star Trek</em> than classic catch phrases, it's the Klingons. They are the Captain Hook to the Federation's Peter Pan and thus it's important to several potential players that <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> do them justice. Understandably, when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> made the announcement that Klingons would be primarily a PvP focused faction, people were concerned. Players don't want their beloved gruff 'n tough warrior race to become a second-tier faction.<br />
<br />
My time with the Klingon side of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> has given me a pretty good sense for what Cryptic is trying to do with the game. It's not exactly what you may be thinking. It's most certainly not anything like <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online's</em></a> PvMP, as the Klingons have a substantial chunk of the galaxy map to themselves.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-klingons/">Star Trek Online Klingons</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-klingons/#2562178"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/12/sto_klingons_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-klingons/#2562179"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/12/sto_klingons_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-klingons/#2562180"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/12/sto_klingons_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-klingons/#2562181"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/12/sto_klingons_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-klingons/#2562182"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/12/sto_klingons_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/28/hands-on-with-klingons-and-pvp-in-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hands-on with Klingons and PvP in Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/28/hands-on-with-klingons-and-pvp-in-star-trek-online/">Hands-on with Klingons and PvP in Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 28 Dec 2009 09:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/17/ask-cryptic-about-klingons-in-sto/">Late last week</a> we gave you a heads-up that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic">Cryptic</a> was going to begin answering your questions about all things Klingon in <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, and the first round of answers is up.<br />
<br />
This installment of <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/node/784">Ask Cryptic</a> focused heavily on customization, with questions answered about how far characters can go when customizing and creating ships and characters. The <a href="http://crypticstudios.com/">Cryptic</a> development team reiterated a theme that we've heard before: they'll start with a solid foundation and plenty of room to grow, and add things in the future according to what the player base responds to. It's a process that could serve them very well if done right.<br />
<br />
The final question went in a slightly different direction and holds the potential for a lot of fun and debate in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> community. One fan asked if there were plans for Klingon language content. The answer? <em>"We've been looking all over for someone to help us out with Klingon Localization. However, at this time there seems to be a shortage of Klingon linguists. We're hoping that as the Klingon language becomes more prominent we'll be able to find someone to help us out with this. We're also looking into ways we can farm this out to the community. Any volunteers?"</em><br />

Do you have burning questions about Klingon play in <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>? <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> is more than aware that people are going to have questions, and so they've put up a new thread (<a href="http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=43239">hit it up right here</a>) where you can use a Cryptic account to post all the questions your heart could ever possibly desire to ask. We're sure to see the answers sooner rather than later, but with holidays occurring next week, it may take longer than usual. <br />
<br />
Also, in case you need some help with your questions, here are some keywords we'd suggest you consider using when asking questions about Klingons: booze, battle and bat'leth.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/17/ask-cryptic-about-klingons-in-sto/">Ask Cryptic about Klingons in STO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 Dec 2009 22:00:00 EST. Romulans! They're pretty prevalent in today's exclusive <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> screens, although they're not the only antagonists fighting against the Federation. You've got to remember <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gallery/star-trek-online-gallery/2493539/full/">never to underestimate the Borg</a> in their ability to frustrate and terrify the Feddies into tossing up shields and blaring red alerts ship-wide. Plus, there's the Klingons, whose very name just sounds sharp and dangerous.<br />
<br />
We're getting off topic, though. If you like phasers, explosions and majestic <em>Trek</em> style space ships then we're certain you'll enjoy feasting your eyes on these five new screens.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/">Star Trek Online Gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451212"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451213"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#1480579"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/sto_screen_032709_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451211"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#1480580"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/sto_screen_032709_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/01/slipping-through-space-majestic-in-five-new-star-trek-online-scr/">Slipping through space majestic in five new Star Trek Online screens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 01 Dec 2009 12:00:00 EST. This isn't often a question we find ourselves asking others when it comes to character creation in an MMO, but, well <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> is different in this regard. Considering the very specific sort of wish fulfillment <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic">Cryptic's</a> next game offers, do you plan to first create a fictional captain or in-game version of yourself to captain a starship?<br />
<br />
You see, we began thinking on this very subject not too long ago and a dilemma struck. While being a Vulcan or some odd new species is undoubtedly a tempting concept, seeing ourselves sitting in the captain's chair is nearly as exciting. Considering Cryptic's knack for powerful character creation tools, we've no doubt that coming up with a close approximation of our likeness wouldn't be too difficult.<br />
<br />
We know that every <em>Star Trek</em> fan is going to create themselves at some point but your first "main" is so very important. Since <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/10/star-trek-online-wouldnt-you-like-to-be-a-klingon-too/">creating a Klingon-sided character is unlocked</a> after some initial Federation play, we're thinking of making ourselves first, and then, wait for it... a <em>Gorn</em> <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Gorn">second</a>. Yes!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/21/the-daily-grind-you-or-not-you-in-star-trek-online/">The Daily Grind: You or not you, in Star Trek Online?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 21 Nov 2009 08:00:00 EST. <br />
However, we do find ourselves wondering if there should be more than one cover here, since half the game is dedicated to Klingon play. Sure, you've got some Birds of Prey in the background, but the iconic Federation logo, Constitution-like ship and Captain are most obviously the center of attention.<br />
<br />
Then again, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/16/ships-star-trek-online-community-qanda-answers/">so long as the game is fulfilling our deepest <em>Star Trek</em> desires</a>, we suppose it's all a moot point. Plus, we're sure many of you are just going to buy this on Steam or some similar magical online store. That's been our prerogative at Massively as of late, especially since it cuts down on unwanted PC games box clutter that turns into a mountain of excess over several years. It's a bit late due to some scheduling issues, but your first batch of <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> community questions are here and they're all about ships as promised!<br />
<br />
Of course, we noticed many of you had space combat questions. While those unfortunately weren't answered this week, our new topic (up later today, so be on the look out for it!) will in fact, be, space combat. Still, many of your questions are answered below. As the weeks continue to go by, we endeavor to fulfill your quest for as much information on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> as possible. Enjoy!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/16/ships-star-trek-online-community-qanda-answers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ships! <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/22/star-trek-online-closed-beta-has-begun/">With beta now beginning</a>, we shot some relevant questions at Cryptic's Craig Zinkievich, executive producer on <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. He gave us his insight on what the team's goals are during beta and what some of their toughest challenges were from their point of view. Plus, we even got him to spill the beans on when Klingons would be entering the fray for beta testers -- hopefully the rest of us get to see and hear more about the warrior race soon thereafter.<br />
<br />
It's a short interview, mostly because we kept our questions on topic and well, also because we didn't want to distract Craig from working on his game for very long. Someone's got to work on fulfilling our childhood fantasies!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/31/massivelys-star-trek-online-beta-interview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's Star Trek Online beta interview</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/31/massivelys-star-trek-online-beta-interview/">Massively's Star Trek Online beta interview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 31 Oct 2009 11:00:00 EST. You there! You look like the kind of aspiring individual who knows what's best for him or her. Why, we bet that if you had to choose between the cowardly Federation or mighty Klingon Empire, you'd make the right decision. Would you? Of course you would. That's right, you're a proud and courageous warrior, it's so obvious now.<br />
<br />
We asked <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> if they were involved, but their official response was that, sadly, they weren't. Even still, the video is nothing but pure awesome and we hope that whomever is responsible makes a Federation variant at some point -- or even a Borg version! <br />
<br />
Check out the video after the break, and afterwards you will come to love Qo'noS as much as we now do. <br type="_moz" /><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/27/cryptic-isnt-spreading-klingon-propaganda-but-its-still-aweso/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cryptic isn't spreading Klingon propaganda, but it's still awesome</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/27/cryptic-isnt-spreading-klingon-propaganda-but-its-still-aweso/">Cryptic isn't spreading Klingon propaganda, but it's still awesome</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 27 Oct 2009 13:00:00 EST. Some people have already gotten into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/22/star-trek-online-closed-beta-has-begun/">the closed beta</a> for <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, but for the rest of us it's going to be a waiting game. There may be good news for some of our UK-based readers, though. Those in attendance at this week's <a href="http://expo.eurogamer.net/">Eurogamer Expo</a> will get to experience both ship-based action and ground combat firsthand in a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> demo <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-studios">Cryptic Studios</a> has set up. According to Eurogamer, <a href="http://www.crypticstudios.com">Cryptic</a> will allow Expo attendees to fight a fleet of Klingons and follow that up with an away mission on a planet's surface, where they will encounter the "Guardian of Forever." <br />
<br />
Eurogamer Expo will run October 27-28 in Leeds, and October 30-31 in London. You can check out the full details of this public hands-on of <em>Star Trek Online</em> in <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/star-trek-online-beams-down-to-expo-blog-entry">the Eurogamer announcement</a>.<br />

Just when you thought you'd seen enough <em><a href="http://www.startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online</a></em> space combat videos to keep you satisfied for a day or two, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic">Cryptic Studios</a> whips out a Klingon focused trailer that's sure to get your <a href="http://www.pepto-bismol.com/">Pepto Bismol</a> colored blood beating through those hardened, warrior-like veins.<br /><br />That's right, Klingons are in this game! We almost forgot with all that Federation love coming from Cryptic ever since the game was announced. But that's okay, because Klingon's are accustomed to waiting in secrecy for the right moment to strike. This is only the first small disruptor blast in what's sure to be a volley of ferocious strikes far greater than any puny <em>Federation</em> ship could handle.<br /><br />See the glory of the Klingon Empire after the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/17/klingons-make-their-first-star-trek-online-video-appearance/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Klingons make their first Star Trek Online video appearance</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/17/klingons-make-their-first-star-trek-online-video-appearance/">Klingons make their first Star Trek Online video appearance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 17 Oct 2009 16:00:00 EST. Activate your holoemitters and prep your photonic crew, because the ship class that <em>Star Trek: Voyager</em> built is headed to sector near you. The <a href="http://startrekonline.com/ships/discovery">Discovery is the next generation</a> of long-range science vessels, and wow does its design shout it loudly. We're going to overlook the fact that, from the front, the ship looks a lot like a muffin due to its warp foils, and move right on ahead to how cool the rest of the ship looks from other angles.<br /><br />Although, with the ability to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/23/skill-and-ship-progression-covered-in-new-sto-dev-chat/">fully customize your ship</a>, we suppose plenty of players will opt for a less bakery inspired frontal appearance purely through coincidence. Plus, there's also the yet-to-be-revealed Cochrane variant as well.<br /><br />Also, don't let the big blue deflector array fool you into thinking this ship is equipped with some kind of super weapon. Being a science vessel, the Discovery is much more adept at advanced tech, and as such can hone in on an enemies weakness right quick. Who needs heavy weapons when you've got an Achilles heel detector? Heck, this baby can even detect some cloaked ships -- take that, <em>sorta</em>, Klingons!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/24/take-a-voyage-to-er-to-the-discovery/">Take a voyage to... er, to the Discovery</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 Sep 2009 09:00:00 EST. Five new screens <a href="http://startrekonline.com/node/193">from <em>Star Trek Online</em> have been loosed</a> onto the dangerous space known as the internet, and we've <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/1423968/full/">got 'em right here</a> for your enjoyment. Destroyed moons and sexy angles of sleek starships aside, we also get a look at some Klingons, new interiors and what we're guessing is a new Klingon Empire vessel.<br /><br />There's definitely a sense of progress happening as these new screens continue to come out of Cryptic, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/08/watch-this-strinkingly-good-star-trek-online-character-customization-video/">which only whets our appetite</a> for a new gameplay trailer. Although something like that takes considerably more time to put together and authorize than a few screenshots here and there. But it wouldn't be a bad idea to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/25/star-trek-online-gets-frigid-in-a-good-way/">show off some of these locations</a> we keep seeing in still form.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/">Star Trek Online Gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451212"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451213"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#1480579"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/sto_screen_032709_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451211"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#1480580"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/sto_screen_032709_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/11/klingons-and-starships-in-newest-star-trek-online-screens/">Klingons and starships in newest Star Trek Online screens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 11 Mar 2009 15:00:00 EST. In recent memory the Cryptic crew has given us a lot of <em><a href="http://www.startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online</a></em> goodness to chew on. There was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/25/first-starfleet-ship-detailed-for-star-trek-online/">the unveil of the NX-91001</a>, an advanced exploration craft in the Federation fleet. There was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/24/take-a-video-tour-of-cryptic-studios/">the tour of the studio</a>, you might remember, or even the news that the game <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/cryptic-may-be-porting-champions-star-trek-online-to-the-ps3/">might be coming to the PlayStation 3</a>. One of their other recent features was entitled 'The Road to 2409', and began the process of moving prospective players <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/08/star-trek-online-timeline-update-covers-the-year-2382/">through the future history of the Star Trek universe</a>. The time after the show Deep Space Nine and the movie Nemesis is completely untouched by official media, so we as Trek fans need all the help we can acclimating to that big jump in time.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/timeline/2384">Their newest feature brings us to the year 2384</a>, a stardate still bearing many familiar faces and names for long-time Trek fans. The bulk of the article concerns upheaval in the Romulan Empire, with political changes still echoing through that body in the wake of the final Next Generation movie. Meanwhile, across the galaxy, the Klingon Empire faces new threats from an old border. Old familiar names from DS9 (Odo, the planet Bajor) are mentioned in passing, and the Federation as always is involved throughout the Alpha Quadrant. <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/timeline/2384">Read the full article for details</a> and to make the timeline jump to the year 2384!<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/">Star Trek Online Gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451212"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451213"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#1480579"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/sto_screen_032709_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451211"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#1480580"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/sto_screen_032709_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/02/star-trek-online-timeline-advances-to-stardate-2384/">Star Trek Online timeline advances to stardate 2384</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 02 Jan 2009 11:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> has updated <a href="http://startrekonline.com/timeline/2382">the <span style="font-style: italic;">Star Trek Online</span> timeline</a> that leads up to when the game takes place. Just to refresh everyone's memory, Star Trek Online is set in the year 2409, which is thirty years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis. The newest update on the official website covers the events of the year 2382, or 27 years prior to the game.<br /><br />The biggest part of this updates deals with the <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Romulan">Romulans</a> (biological cousins to the Vulcans) who are heading down a path to civil war, as political in-fighting continues to grow. Meanwhile the Unification movement, represented by Ambassador Spock, once again attempts to push their agenda by seeking the support of the <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/United_Federation_of_Planets">Federation</a> Council. Ultimately though, the Federation declines to support the movement to unify the two races, as the Vulcan members of the council aren't too keen on such an uncertain and essentially illogical idea.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/">Star Trek Online Gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451212"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451213"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#1480579"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/sto_screen_032709_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451211"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#1480580"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/sto_screen_032709_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/08/star-trek-online-timeline-update-covers-the-year-2382/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Star Trek Online timeline update covers the year 2382</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/08/star-trek-online-timeline-update-covers-the-year-2382/">Star Trek Online timeline update covers the year 2382</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 08 Dec 2008 09:00:00 EST. Combat is the main topic this time around in <a href="http://startrekonline.com/dev_blog/ask_cryptic_10-27-08">the latest Ask Cryptic</a> for <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online</a>. The first question pertains to melee combat and just how it'll work. Surprisingly, it looks as though melee combat will actually be more than a simple aside to back-and-forth phaser fire. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> says that Klingons will make use of bat'leth and the Federation will use lirpa -- <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/30/the-star-trek-online-site-is-offering-a-free-history-lesson/">that historically memorable</a> staff-like weapon Spock and Kirk used to battle it out. It still remains slightly unclear whether or not players from opposite factions will be able to effectively use melee weaponry.<br /><br />As for question number two -- and probably the second-most important -- a forum poster asked Cryptic whether ship combat would be point-and-click like <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.eve-online.com">EVE Online</a> or more tactical like traditional Star Trek battles. Thankfully, the answer was that yes, players can expect <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/18/revealed-star-trek-online-ship-classes-and-more-customi/">to have full control over their ship</a> in order to hide their weaker points while attacking the structurally unsound targets of their enemies' shields and hull.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/28/sto-combat-and-character-questions-answered-in-latest-ask-crypti/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>STO combat and character questions answered in latest Ask Cryptic</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/28/sto-combat-and-character-questions-answered-in-latest-ask-crypti/">STO combat and character questions answered in latest Ask Cryptic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 11:00:00 EST. The newest trio of screens to come out for <em><a href="http://www.startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online</a></em> give us a taste of what to expect from the character customization options touted in the MMO. But simply calling it character creation would be underselling it. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> is promising <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/23/some-fresh-star-trek-online-customization-info-for-humanoids-on/">fully-featured racial creation tools</a> here, which explains why the lady in the upper right of the image above looks like a green Klingon. Don't get us wrong, we're totally cool with green ridge-head ladies -- they're just the bee's knees. Though in truth we've always <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReOw_2f4lpY">had a soft spot for Betazoids</a>, if we're going to be honest here.<br /><br />Aside from this visual tease, the other two images focus on the game environment like most of the previous screenshots we've seen. We're happy to be getting a little bit more information out of Cryptic, even if the offering has only made us lust for more customization details. Consider us on watch for visual <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/18/revealed-star-trek-online-ship-classes-and-more-customi/">starship customization examples</a>.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/">Star Trek Online Gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451212"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451213"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#1480579"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/sto_screen_032709_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#2451211"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/stobridge1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-gallery/#1480580"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/sto_screen_032709_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/10/new-star-trek-online-screenshots-reveal-character-customization/">New Star Trek Online screenshots reveal character customization depth</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 10 Oct 2008 16:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.crypticstudios.com">Cryptic Studios</a> made clear the basic framework of its vision for <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> immediately after <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/11/liveblog-info-videos-and-more-from-the-star-trek-online-liveca/">announcing</a> the game, but the occasional <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/12/podcast-interviews-two-star-trek-online-guys-gets-lots-of-new-i/">interview</a> or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/12/star-trek-online-faq-describes-pvp-rules-and-other-stuff/">FAQ</a> has revealed greater detail over the past few days. The latest example is a <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm?PLAY=1267&amp;GAME=352&amp;VIEW=videos&amp;bhcp=1">video interview at MMORPG with Cryptic's Jack Emmert</a>, who in the interview reveals specifics about character, race, and starship customization. He also talks about Cryptic's relationship with the previous holders of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> mantle, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/perpetual-entertainment">Perpetual Entertainment.</a><br /><br />As far as the customization goes, you'll be able to customize the "skin, eyebrows, antennae, and hair" of your characters and races. At launch, it's likely that all players will be humanoids. Ship geometry, colors, decals, names, and even serial numbers can all be set by players. It sounds like they'll use basic "kits" of tools based on which faction (Federation or Klingon) they choose.<br /><br />Emmert also says that "war games" within factions would be possible, allowing players to engage in PvP with members of their own factions in a limited way. He doesn't sound at all certain that it will be possible at launch, though.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/23/some-fresh-star-trek-online-customization-info-for-humanoids-on/">Some fresh Star Trek Online customization info (for humanoids only)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 23 Aug 2008 19:00:00 EST. After a century of (<a href="http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/DS9/episode/68228.html">only occasionally broken</a>) <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Khitomer_Accords">peace</a>, the two old enemies are clashing once again!<br /><br />Turns out the first choice you'll make as a new player will be choosing between the two factions. So which one will you choose? Will you join the United Federation of Planets, an idealistic democracy and diverse coalition of races that Roddenberry based on the (perhaps unreal) American ideal? Or will you take the path of Awesome[TM] and choose the Klingon Empire, a battle-crazed, feudalistic warrior culture dedicated to honorable bloodshed?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/13/the-daily-grind-the-federation-or-the-klingons/">The Daily Grind: The Federation or the Klingons?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 13 Aug 2008 08:00:00 EST. However, we do know that <a href="http://www.trekmovie.com">Star Trek</a> fans are a <a href="http://www.cnn.com/US/fringe/9603/03-14/trek.html">passionate bunch</a>. In this case, they were passionate enough to make their very own <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HurskrKtEpY&amp;eurl=http://www.startrek-online.net/messageboard/showthread.php?t=11152">concept video</a> of what <em>Star Trek Online</em>'s ground combat might look like.<br /><br />It's pretty amusing, and if you're a fan it will probably make you even more anxious to finally learn what the combat <em>really</em> looks like. It also ought to make you a bit nostalgic about how awesome <a href="http://imdb.com/title/tt0106145/"><em>Star Trek: Deep Space Nine</em>'s</a> "The Way of the Warrior" <a href="http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/DS9/episode/68228.html">episode</a> was. Hardcore Trekkies (or Trekkers) will surely get a kick out of the fact that the combat text for Klingons is actually in <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Klingon-Dictionary-Star-Trade-hardcover/dp/067174559X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-8260495-0871255?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1194288422&amp;sr=8-1">Klingon</a>.
