There's much to be discovered in the <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/node/594431">lore of <em>Champions Online's</em> Blood Moon</a>. For instance, players will have the opportunity to do battle with zombie versions of 13 of the greatest heroes to have fallen in the Battle of Detroit. After defeating these undead abominations, it will then be time to descend into Takofanes' crypts and free the entrapped spirits of those 13 heroes before even more evil can be done.<br /><br />Even more curiously, Takofanes -- the main villain of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blood-moon">Blood Moon</a> -- is making predictions that this assault is merely the first wave of an ensuing apocalypse that will swallow the very world whole. And when is this dark omen occurring? Sooner than we think, apparently.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/01/theres-more-to-the-lore-of-champions-onlines-blood-moon/">There's more to the lore of Champions Online's Blood Moon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 01 Oct 2009 10:00:00 EST. To add even more superhero cred to the game, Cryptic has hired writers well-versed in the comics industry like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Layman">John Layman</a>, of both Marvel and Wildstorm fame. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.pc.ign.com">IGN</a> is hosting a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online"><em>Champions Online</em></a> developer diary written by Layman that focuses on his work at Cryptic Studios. Layman introduces what he does,<em>"I'm the writer-guy for Champions Online, a comic book writer imported specifically to write a comic book themed game. And, just like writing comics, coming up with the right words, concepts, and plots is the very first part of a very long chain of work." </em>He writes about the process of hashing out the best ideas with other Cryptic notables like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jack-emmert">Jack Emmert</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/randy-mosiondz">Randy Mosiondz</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/brian-gilmore">Brian Gilmore</a>, and then working to tailor those concepts to 'comic book-ese' that works for <em>Champions Online</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/01/champions-online-dev-diary-by-comic-book-writer-john-layman/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Champions Online dev diary by comic book writer John Layman</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/01/champions-online-dev-diary-by-comic-book-writer-john-layman/">Champions Online dev diary by comic book writer John Layman</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 01 May 2009 18:00:00 EST. All right, so maybe the 200 mundane weapons available in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Champions-Online/">Champions Online</a></em> won't fit into a vehicle -- but it makes for some startling imagery. Unfortunately, <a href="http://www.newsarama.com/games/020910-NYCC-Cryptic.html">according to the panel which took place</a> last weekend at the New York Comic-con, <em>Champions Online</em> is unlikely to launch with drivable <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHj2Da-gEeI">wheels of steel</a> or any other form of bodacious transportation. But don't feel like all is lost, because Cryptic was quick mention that situation would be remedied soon after CO-day.<br /><br />(Everyone calls launch day CO-day, right?)<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/vehicles-200-weapons-and-hospitalized-writers-in-champions-onli/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Vehicles, 200 weapons and hospitalized writers in Champions Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/vehicles-200-weapons-and-hospitalized-writers-in-champions-onli/">Vehicles, 200 weapons and hospitalized writers in Champions Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 10:00:00 EST. <div align="left">It looks like <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/node/183"><em>Champions Online</em> is surfacing</a> in some new places with a new <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/28627999#28627999">gameplay video up on MSNBC</a> and an interview with John Layman, the game's writer, <a href="http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&amp;id=19564">up on Comic Book Resources</a>. The video isn't in the best resolution, but it's enough to see that the visuals and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/07/new-details-on-custom-powers-and-more-for-champions-online/">new powers are really starting to come along</a>.<br /></div>
</div>
<br />A lot of ambient lighting seems to have been added, which is making the game look much <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/01/happy-new-years-video-from-champions-online/">more visually appealing</a>. We did notice some of the animations were certainly looking finished, while some weren't quite there yet. A caveat: If obsessively following MMOs-in-development for over nine years has taught us anything, it's that games often don't look "finished" until they just about ready to ship.<br /><br />The interview with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-layman/">John Layman</a> comes with a cache of new screens, which are the first set that really make the game look good in a paused state -- something not achieved until now. As for the discussion with Layman, it's entirely worth a read if you're interested in <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Champions-Online/">Champions Online</a> at all.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/17/new-champions-online-gameplay-video-screens-and-writer-intervie/">New Champions Online gameplay video, screens and writer interview surface</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 17 Jan 2009 09:00:00 EST. After speaking with John Layman at PAX08, our second <a href="http://www.champions-online.com" style="font-style: italic;">Champions Online</a> interview was with content lead Zeke Sparkes. We talked sound effects, travel powers, character creation, controls and zone creation among other things. In fact, we actually got a short period of hands-on time with the game prior to the interview.<br /><br />So far, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online/" style="font-style: italic;">Champions Online</a> had only been playable with the Xbox 360 controller, but we were able to finally try the keyboard and mouse controls at PAX. Instead of hitting a face button on the Xbox controller to do your basic attack, you tap an assigned number-key on your keyboard. As you do this, you build up energy and can move through the rest of the powers, which for us were set to the rest of the numbered keys. Overall, the keyboard and mouse controls feel tight and responsive for a game scheduled to launch in Spring of 2009.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/01/pax08-talking-with-champions-onlines-content-lead-zeke-sparke/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX08: Talking with Champions Online's content lead, Zeke Sparkes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/01/pax08-talking-with-champions-onlines-content-lead-zeke-sparke/">PAX08: Talking with Champions Online's content lead, Zeke Sparkes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 01 Sep 2008 17:00:00 EST. Amidst the rather large -- but also surprisingly polite -- crowd surrounding the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic">Cryptic Studios</a> booth, we were able to talk with the writer for <a href="http://www.champions-online.com" style="font-style: italic;">Champions Online</a>, John Layman. Discussions revolved around the breadth and depth of content within the game's zones and the possibilities of space-based zones lying in wait for higher level characters. Two words to get you excited: interplanetary threats. We also learned about John's fondness for sprinkling lots of homages throughout the game. Overall, it was a fun trip into the mind of a man who really loves zombies, pajamas and nerdy in-jokes that future players of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online/" style="font-style: italic;">Champions Online</a> will be able to find some humor from.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2008-general-gallery/">PAX 2008 General Gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2008-general-gallery/#1012344"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/09/jgehermannpax08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2008-general-gallery/#1012057"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/09/pax08_2-084_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2008-general-gallery/#1012056"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/09/pax08_2-082_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2008-general-gallery/#1012055"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/09/pax08_2-079_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2008-general-gallery/#1012054"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/09/pax08_2-078_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/01/pax08-interviewing-champion-onlines-writer-john-layman/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX08: Interviewing Champion Online's writer, John Layman</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/01/pax08-interviewing-champion-onlines-writer-john-layman/">PAX08: Interviewing Champion Online's writer, John Layman</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 01 Sep 2008 12:00:00 EST. E3, though not quite the spectacle it used to be, still carries in its wake <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/e308">loads of exciting news for fanboys in the know</a>. It's followed a week later by the comic convention to end all comic conventions -- the San Diego Comic Con. While we were a bit disappointed to see that Cryptic wasn't going to be sporting a booth this year, they did <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/node/99">put up an announcement on their website</a> saying that they'll be holding a meet-and-greet for any budding <a href="http://www.champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> fans in attendance.<br /><br />For those interested in making an appearance, they'll be in the Oni Press area around booths 1834-1837 both on Friday the 25th at 1:15 and Saturday the 26th at 2:45. Writer John Layman (the man behind <a href="http://www.onipress.com/display.php?type=se&amp;id=29">Tek Jansen</a>) and combat designer Geoff Tuffli will be in attendance, ready to take your questions, complaints, suggestions, diatribes, and anything else you can throw at them. We knew this guy <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/03/the-writer-for-champions-online-is-awesome/">was awesome</a>, so it's nice to see him in the running for an award. What award is John Layman -- writer for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-studio">Cryptic Studio's</a> upcoming <em><a href="http://www.champions-online.com">Champions Online</a></em> -- being nominated for, you ask? None other than the <a href="http://www.harveyawards.org/history.html">Harvey award</a> for his work on Stephen Colbert's Tek Jansen No. 1 -- that's right, he's the series' co-author. The comic issue in question is being nominated for best single issue or story. It's also worth noting that the second issue is coming out on July 2nd, so if you weren't sure about getting it before you've got yourself a new excuse.<br /><br />This is a really great sign for anyone looking forward to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online/">Champions Online</a></em>, since a lot of how interesting the game characters and Champions world will be relies on Layman's ability to write well. We really can't wait to see his take on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxbat_(Hero_Universe)">Foxbat</a>, which should prove to be especially awesome. We're looking forward to the mission where we get to stop Foxbat from flooding the city with Jell-O or forcing everyone to do the <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=9z7t-Ox3XvU">macarena</a> repeatedly for hours on end -- or maybe he'll try to carry off the Empire State Building again.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/22/champions-online-writer-nominated-for-award/">Champions Online writer nominated for award</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 22 Jun 2008 15:00:00 EST. You probably already know that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-studios/">Cryptic Studios</a> plans on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/24/cryptic-studios-coming-to-pax-and-gencon-indy-this-august/">coming to Gencon Indy and PAX</a> this year. What you may not know is that Cryptic would like you all to tell them what you want to see. What team members do you want to meet? What panels do you want them to attend and discuss? All of your questions can be <a href="http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=5302">asked in the discussion thread</a>.<br /><br />Our personal suggestion is definitely related to PAX, where we'd love to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/25/a-day-at-cryptic-with-jack-emmert/">see Jack Emmert</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/28/meet-the-lead-designer-for-champions-online/">Randy Mosiondz</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/03/the-writer-for-champions-online-is-awesome/">John Layman</a>. Last year at PAX there was a very interesting "Future of MMOs" panel that we would love to see get some Cryptic input. Although truthfully we just want to find a bunch of you guys and chat about all things superheroes, MMOs and pen and paper RPGs. Oh and of course if we could get some crazy demoing of <em><a href="http://www.champions-online.com/">Champions Online</a></em>, that'd be super awesome too. It's probably asking a bit too much, but it's nice to dream isn't it?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/06/cryptic-has-something-to-ask-you/">Cryptic has something to ask you</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 06 May 2008 17:30:00 EST. A brand new villain has been revealed on the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online/">Champions Online</a></em> website. His name is Menton and he's the most powerful human psionic alive. He harbors a massive contempt for humanity and considers everyone else -- even the supremely powerful Doctor Destroyer -- to be stupid in comparison. There's a lot of very good back-story to read concerning Menton at the official site. It's a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/29/new-ask-cryptic-talks-class-balance/">real treat</a> for anyone who enjoys some good comic book-style stories, so check it out.<br /><br />This is some early proof that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> made a good choice going with the Champions world for their next MMO. Granted, we say early because until we get a taste of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/03/the-writer-for-champions-online-is-awesome/">John Layman's</a> writing of these characters we won't really know how compelling they are in-game. Still, Menton looks and sounds <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/01/first-champions-online-wallpapers-appear/">pretty cool</a> so far and that's a strong start.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/08/champions-onlines-newest-villain-is-menton/">Champions Online's newest villain is Menton</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 Apr 2008 16:30:00 EST. This time around we meet the man responsible for making the the story for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic">Cryptic's</a> upcoming superhero MMO -- John Layman. The most important thing to know about Mr. Layman is other than being able to weep ultra-luminous tears he's also an bonafide comic book writer. His works include Marvel Zombies vs Army of Darkness and House of M: Fantastic Four, which were both great reads. We're expecting some very entertaining writing in <em>Champions Online</em>, especially from a guy who got to write a character like Ash.<br /><br />When Jack Emmert said that Cryptic wanted to push the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/22/jack-emmert-emphasizes-story-in-champions-online/">importance</a> of story and character in <em>CO</em>, he wasn't exaggerating. The act of hiring John Layman speaks a lot for what we can expect from the sure-to-be-crazy world of <em>Champions Online</em>. <br /><br />He wrote a scene with a zombie Howard the Duck chomping the brains out of Ash for crying out loud -- we mean, come on! This game had better have a great story.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/03/the-writer-for-champions-online-is-awesome/">The writer for Champions Online is awesome</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 03 Apr 2008 16:00:00 EST. You might be surprised (or maybe you wouldn't) to know that some of us here at Massively are comic book geeks. You know, the types who look forward to Wednesdays because that's the day comics come out each week -- yeah we're practically <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/29/new-champions-online-location-info-stronghold/">prisoners</a> in a comic book-build jail. So you can imagine our lingering excitement for a massively game like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online/" style="font-style: italic;">Champions Online</a> -- which has <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> promising a lot of features above and beyond what <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes" style="font-style: italic;">City of Heroes</a> is capable of providing.<br /><br />One particular feature is a stronger <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/15/you-ask-cryptic-answers-non-combat-skills/">emphasis</a> on the characters that populate the world of <span style="font-style: italic;">Champions Online</span>. It's a promise that has made us skeptical, to be sure, but a recent post by Jack Emmert as assuaged or worries slightly. It's a long post so if you don't have the time or patience to read it -- there's a fairly good way to sum it all up.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/22/jack-emmert-emphasizes-story-in-champions-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Jack Emmert emphasizes story in Champions Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/22/jack-emmert-emphasizes-story-in-champions-online/">Jack Emmert emphasizes story in Champions Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 22 Mar 2008 11:00:00 EST.
