<em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/the-soapbox/">The Soapbox</a> column is entirely the opinion of this week's writer and does not necessarily reflect the views of Massively as a whole. If you're afraid of opinions other than your own, you might want to skip this column. Additionally, this article is written in contrast to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/11/the-soapbox-game-journalism-is-not-journalism-yet/">Jef Reahard's Soapbox</a> on how video game journalists are not real journalists; Massively's writers' opinions on the subject vary.</em><br />
<br />
People have, on a few occasions, asked me for advice on becoming a game journalist. My usual response, which is only half-joking, is, "Don't."<br />
<br />
In just a handful of months, I'll be hitting my three-year anniversary for working Massively. That means I've had one of the longest tenures at the site, which is kind of staggering in my mind. I still fundamentally think of myself as one of the new kids on the block. But for better or worse, I've been doing this for a while and have a pretty good grasp of what the job entails.<br />
<br />
Of course, that's still a subject of debate. As with a lot of topics, people as a whole can't even decide on what makes someone a game journalist instead of just an enthusiast with some advertising revenue. To some people, it's not <em>even</em> a real job, just a hobby. I'm one of those people who never like to pin down an exact definition of something that's ambiguous... but I <em>can</em> define what I see as my responsibilities in this job.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/the-soapbox-what-it-means-to-be-a-game-journalist/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Soapbox: What it means to be a game journalist</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/the-soapbox-what-it-means-to-be-a-game-journalist/">The Soapbox: What it means to be a game journalist</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 May 2012 11:00:00 EST. The Final Fantasy series, particularly the online installments, is all about class. This is not entirely surprising, since the series has built up a series of character types that, while sometimes kind of random, are beloved just the same. The jumping spear-wielding Dragoons, dual-wielding and sword-throwing Ninjas, the ubiquitous Summoners... if these concepts don't exist in some form within a game, it raises some eyebrows. It's a symptom of the linking the games by certain broad pseudo-mythological concepts rather than by any actual continuity.<br />
<br />
We've gotten our Job system in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/">Final Fantasy XIV</a></em>, we've got our classes to the point that they're at least somewhat balanced, and we've got a new version on the horizon. The question, then, is what we're getting <em>next</em>. What new classes or jobs can we look forward to? What do we need? What gaps are obvious within the Final Fantasy pantheon, and what is just lacking in terms of a traditional MMO setup?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/07/the-mog-log-head-of-the-newer-class/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Mog Log: Head of the newer class</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/07/the-mog-log-head-of-the-newer-class/">The Mog Log: Head of the newer class</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 07 Apr 2012 21:00:00 EST. With <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/patch121/">patch 1.21</a>, players in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/">Final Fantasy XIV</a></em> will have a new way to improve their characters. Leveling a class won't be changing, but the job system will allow characters to reach the full potential of a given discipline. <a href="http://sqex.to/_3K">The latest preview</a> goes into depth about the process of unlocking and improving each of the new jobs, with each job requiring a primary class at level 30 and a supplementary class at level 15.<br />
<br />
Once a job is unlocked, players can equip the job's Soul Crystal to switch to the specific job. This will allow the player access to job-specific skills, but it will also carry limitations -- players will be limited in the number of actions that can be equipped from other classes, and they can only use actions from specific classes. If you're more of the crafty sort, of course, you won't be getting in on the new jobs, but you will be able to take advantage of <a href="http://sqex.to/rUc">the newly streamlined recipes for accessories, food, and medicines</a>. So there's a little something for everyone.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/05/get-a-job-in-final-fantasy-xiv/">Get a job in Final Fantasy XIV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 05 Mar 2012 21:00:00 EST. This time last year, <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CCP-Games/">CCP Games</a> was an untouchable powerhouse in the games industry. In addition to servicing around 350,000 <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> subscribers, the company was also developing the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-darkness/"><em>World of Darkness</em></a> MMO and the full scale MMOFPS <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514/"><em>DUST 514</em></a> set on the planets of <em>EVE</em>. Everything seemed to be going fine, but with the release of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Incarna/">Incarna</a></em> at the end of June, CCP faced the biggest crisis in the company's history. Due to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/26/eve-evolved-the-day-that-eve-online-died/">a series of missteps and internal leaks</a> that has come to be collectively known as Monoclegate, player confidence in CCP plummeted to record low.<br />
<br />
Following the CEO's recent letter of apology promising a refocusing of development on in-space <em>EVE</em> features, news of highly requested features due for inclusion in <em>EVE </em>has gone a long way toward restoring confidence in CCP as a developer. With the return of ship spinning earlier this week and news of updates from hybrid turret rebalancing and implants being added to killmails to the release of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/21/eve-dev-blog-talks-new-minmatar-battlecruiser/">player-designed Tornado battlecruiser</a>, the process of refocusing on <em>EVE </em>is well underway. Unfortunately, the good news of upcoming gameplay updates has been marred by the sobering reality that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/19/ccp-layoffs-affect-20-of-worldwide-staff-company-focusing-on-e/">over 20% of CCP's worldwide staff have been laid off</a> as part of the refocusing effort.<br />
<br />
In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a>, I look at the human casualties of the recent <em>EVE </em>drama and speak to an insider at CCP about what's going on within the company. Unless quotes or facts in this article are specifically attributed to this insider, they are my own views and opinions based on publicly available information.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/23/eve-evolved-the-human-casualties/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: The human casualties</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/23/eve-evolved-the-human-casualties/">EVE Evolved: The human casualties</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 23 Oct 2011 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/trion-worlds/">Trion Worlds</a> has a new star quarterback for its European branch today, as former <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/atari/">Atari</a> general manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-burns/">John Burns</a> joined the team. Burns <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2011-06-03-trion-worlds-gets-new-euro-gm">is now senior vice president and general manager</a> of Trion's European branch.<br />
<br />
Trion's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/david-reid/">David Reid</a> feels that Burns is a major catch for the company:<em> "John joins Trion with almost two decades of gaming experience with him, and will be essential in our continued success throughout Europe. With the launch of </em><a href="http://www.riftgame.com/en/">RIFT</a> <em>earlier this year, we began laying the groundwork for a strong presence in Europe, which will grow as we bring premium, connected games to gamers around the world." </em><br />
<br />

Icelandic game development studio <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> began life as a handful of employees in a small Reykjavik building. The ongoing success of its flagship game <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> has fueled the company's expansion into a global entity with offices in Iceland, the United States, China and the United Kingdom. In addition to working on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, CCP's offices house people working on the upcoming console MMOFPS <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514/">Dust 514</a></em> and the announced <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-darkness/"><em>World of Darkness</em></a> MMO.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.ccpgames.com/en/public-relations/press-releases/ccp-games-announces-georgia-expansion.aspx"> CCP announced today</a> that its American headquarters are to be relocated to a new area in Atlanta. The new office space will provide some much-needed room for the company to expand, allowing it to create up to 150 new jobs over the next three years. Many of these jobs will be filled by local colleges and universities, which offer comprehensive courses relating heavily to work in the games industry.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/mike-tinney">Mike Tinney</a>, President of CCP North America, was positive about the move.<em> "Decatur offers the perfect blend of big city accessibility with a hometown feel that we were looking for," </em>he said.<em> "Georgia's financial climate combined with Decatur's social climate provide the ideal conditions for continued growth."</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/24/ccp-games-expanding-us-presence-hiring-150-additional-staff/">CCP Games expanding US presence, hiring 150 additional staff</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 12:45:00 EST. The most recent announcement for <a href="http://www.playonline.com"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/December-version-update/">December version update</a> covered a wide spectrum of improvements for the new level cap increase, but there are adjustments coming to lower levels as well. Subjobs won't be getting most of the boosts, but <a href="http://www.playonline.com/pcd/topics/ff11us/detail/6001/detail.html">several mains will see improved or broadened functionality</a>, starting with Ninjas receiving a long-awaited addition: Universal tools. Available in three broad categories, these tools can be used in place of any specific tool after a character has exhausted the ninjitsu-specific tool.<br />
<br />
Corsairs will see a similar update in the form of a new card that is imbued with all elemental powers, once again only usable after specific cards are used up. Beastmasters receive several new pet broths, Thieves acquire a stacking buff to Treasure Hunter when dealing melee damage, and Scholars see a significant improvement to Sublimation based upon level. Take a look at <a href="http://www.playonline.com/pcd/topics/ff11us/detail/6001/detail.html">the official list of changes</a> to see what your job of choice can expect with the coming <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XI/">Final Fantasy XI</a> </em>version update.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/03/adjustments-incoming-to-final-fantasy-xis-jobs/">Adjustments incoming to Final Fantasy XI's jobs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 03 Dec 2010 19:30:00 EST. Yeah, it's exactly what you think it is. It's one of those columns where the writer announces that she's packing up and moving out. It's a column where the writer talks about how she's been here for two years and 199 days, and has written over 1,018 posts that have included over 534,580 words. It's a column where the writer says goodbye, wishes that she wasn't moving on, but knows that she must.<br />
<br />
Guys and gals, it's been an amazing two and a half years and it has been nothing but an honor to write for all of you. I know sometimes we all disagree, and I know I say some really insane stuff that leaves people going, "Wow, she really said that aloud?" But, I'm glad that all of you still come back to discuss gaming here on my column, despite some of our disagreements. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/anti-aliased">Anti-Aliased</a> has remained one of the most popular columns here on Massively throughout these two years and I am very grateful for your readership.<br />
<br />
As I prepare to leave Massively and say goodbye, I'd like to take one final look at the MMO genre as a whole. Plus, I have a surprise announcement to make at the end! So I drove the <em><a href="http://www.aiononline.com">Aion</a></em> community up a wall again. I seem to do that a lot when I talk about the game. <a href="http://www.aionsource.com/forum/reviews-critiques/99787-aion-wins-award.html">AionSource was a little miffed</a> at the "disappointment" award the staff and readers gave them, and decided to rip into me. So, in an effort of good faith, I dropped by the flame thread and <a href="http://www.aionsource.com/forum/reviews-critiques/99787-aion-wins-award-5.html#post1978358">tried to lighten things up</a> while <a href="http://www.aionsource.com/forum/reviews-critiques/99787-aion-wins-award-5.html#post1978382">explaining my position on the game</a> and how it isn't all doom and gloom.<br />
<br />
Well, after having 9 pages of people not reading what I was writing and electing to call me a nyerking nyerk, I bowed out with a new column topic on my mind: my job. If there was any common theme in all of the screaming, it was how I sucked at my job because I said <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion">Aion</a></em> had a grind, I sucked at my job because I was only level 17 in <em>Aion</em>, everyone on that fansite could do a better job at my job than I could, and I was the reason mainstream reviews were going downhill. (Awesome.)<br />
<br />
Amazingly enough, I too thought pretty much those <strong>exact same things</strong> before I got a job here. But writing here for two years has been one heck of an experience, and maybe today I can give you some insight to the things I see on the staff side of the fence.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/07/anti-aliased-what-its-like-to-sit-in-the-staff-chair/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Anti-Aliased: What it's like to sit in the staff chair</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/07/anti-aliased-what-its-like-to-sit-in-the-staff-chair/">Anti-Aliased: What it's like to sit in the staff chair</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 07 Jan 2010 17:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirates_versus_Ninjas">rivalry between ninjas and pirates</a> is nothing compared to the <a href="http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/paladin/38304-funny-paladin-vs-ninja.html">rivalry between paladins and ninjas</a> in <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.playonline.com">Final Fantasy XI</a>. The two classes have been dueling for years over the space of "best party tank," and have regularly traded the position back and forth thanks to Square-Enix intervention.<br /><br />However, it seems that with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/july-version-update">the new July update</a>, the tank position may once again veering towards the hands of the ninja thanks to the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/27/extensive-white-mage-changes-to-be-rolled-out-with-final-fantasy/">job enhancement spotlight</a> falling on the assassins from the east. July will be adding the new job ability "Yonin," which will increase a Ninja's enmity (hate gain, for other MMO players), critical strike rating, <a href="http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Utsusemi:_Ichi">ninjutsu tool use</a> and evasion, but lower their accuracy. If you've been looking for a game that offers something off the beaten path - or a job in a gaming startup with potential in San Francisco - then you may be interested in the opportunity over at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SparkPlayMedia/">SparkPlay Media</a>. According to a recent posting on their website, they're looking for a Community Manager for their upcoming MMO, <a href="http://www.eartheternal.com/"><em>Earth Eternal</em></a>. They're looking for the normal medley of things for anyone who will work heavily as a liason between community and the internal customers; creativity, organization, communication, experience and excitement. <br /><br />That said, if you're in the Bay Area, have games industry experience, and are looking for a way to get into the MMO side of things, <a href="http://www.sparkplaymedia.com/jobs.php">be sure to check out their job posting</a>. For the rest of us who are just a wee bit too far away for the commute, we'll have to content ourselves with a gallery of tasty screenshots from <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Earth-Eternal/">Earth Eternal</a></em> for now. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earth-eternal/">Earth Eternal</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earth-eternal/#1448090"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/eeternal_1024_kv08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earth-eternal/#1448091"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/eeternal_1024_kv09_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earth-eternal/#1448092"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/eeternal_1024_kv10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earth-eternal/#1448093"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/eeternal_1024_kv01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earth-eternal/#1448094"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/eeternal_1024_kv02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/23/sparkplay-lf-community-manager-pst/">Sparkplay LF Community Manager, PST</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 23 Mar 2009 18:00:00 EST. Battlefields are the places of warriors, mages, paladins, thieves, and rangers. You need to have a sword in your hand or a spell at the ready, because things can go from calm to chaotic in seconds. There's no time to play games when life and death is on the line, especially when a death can cause lost experience points.<br /><br />Whoever said gambling has no place on the battlefield probably never met <a href="http://www.playonline.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Final Fantasy XI</span></a>'s dice rolling, <a href="http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/jobs.html?fjob=17;mid=1145558267167056101;num=128;page=1">card throwing pirate class</a> -- <a href="http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/corsair/65531-gambler-s-life-corsair-guide.html">the corsair</a>. As if we need more examples of how much more widely-accepted gaming is in the East than the West, a company in Singapore has <a href="http://kotaku.com/5118400/singapore-recruiters-not-avoiding-wow-players">recently voiced their stance</a> on the whole issue of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/employers-screening-wow-players-during-recruitment/">denying people jobs</a> if they play <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>. According to GMP Group, a recruiting firm in Singapore, <a href="http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_318280.html">none of their clients have turned down a potential employee</a> for playing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wow"><em>WoW</em></a>.<br /><br />The company's CEO, Annie Yap, acknowledges the problematic side of gaming addiction, but cites Singaporeans as "more pragmatic in thinking and attitude" as they won't allow gaming to interfere with their job. Does this mean hope for the Western attitude toward gaming? Probably not any time soon, but as the gamer generation gets older, that possibility increases.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/27/singapore-welcomes-wow-playing-employees/">Singapore welcomes WoW-playing employees</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 27 Dec 2008 17:00:00 EST. Speculation has run rampant on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/08/is-the-world-of-harry-potter-turbines-next-mmo-project/">what console MMOG</a> the company is developing, but now we know where some of that 40 million is being spent. <br /> <br /> <a href="http://www.boston.com/business/technology/articles/2008/07/05/game_makers_may_get_a_break/">The Boston Globe is reporting</a> potential tax breaks for video-game development studios based in Massachusetts and spoke with Turbine chief financial officer, Peter Faubert regarding the proposed legislation. Game development is booming in Massachusetts and it turns out Turbine is looking for a new headquarters in the Boston area since they have outgrown their studios in Westwood. Faubert goes on to say that Turbine plans to add an additional 100 staff to Turbine's burgeoning ranks by the end of 2009. Many <a href="http://www.cytiva.com/turbin/ext/tpl.asp">employment opportunities are available</a> on the official Turbine INC. website, but any indication on the specifics regarding a new project is cleverly kept covert.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/07/turbine-is-seeking-new-headquarters-and-additional-developer-tal/">Turbine is seeking new headquarters and additional developer talent</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 07 Jul 2008 19:00:00 EST. The listing makes mention of benefits and opportunity for growth, which is frankly more than we were expecting from a company that was gobbled up by the EA monolith not long ago. <p>Ten years ago, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/06/harvard-looks-to-mmos-for-online-leadership-styles/" mce_href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/06/harvard-looks-to-mmos-for-online-leadership-styles/" target="_blank">idea of putting something like being an officer</a> in a hardcore raiding guild on your resume would have been laughable. When trying to sell yourself to a prospective employer, you want to put your best foot forward. The last thing you'd want them to know is that you spend upwards of 20 hours per week frittering your time away on something as silly as a <em>videogame. </em>Businesses want employees who are punctual, intelligent, analytical, and driven -- problem solvers and team players. What's funny, however, is that <a href="http://beyond-summit.blogspot.com/2006/09/would-you-put-wow-on-your-resume.html" mce_href="http://beyond-summit.blogspot.com/2006/09/would-you-put-wow-on-your-resume.html" target="_blank">those are exactly the same qualities</a> which a guild looks for in its raiders. Good luck trying to explain that to a non-gamer, though.</p>
<p>Fortunately, gaming is slowly becoming a mainstream activity. As the generation of gamers that pioneered the online gaming craze <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2004-05-12-gamer-demographics_x.htm" mce_href="http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2004-05-12-gamer-demographics_x.htm" target="_blank">begin to climb into their 30s and 40s</a>, a younger generation of gamers is just starting to graduate from college and enter the mainstream workforce for the first time. Unlike their older peers, these young men and women face a business world where their boss is <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3147826" mce_href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3147826" target="_blank">as likely to enjoy playing <em>World of Warcraft </em>in his free time as golf</a>. For the first time, it's possible that your hiring manager might actually view your dedication to your guild as a reason to hire you, rather than a reason to dismiss you. Does that mean that it's time to start putting your MMOG experience on your resume?</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/12/player-vs-everything-putting-raiding-on-your-resume/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Player vs. Everything: Putting raiding on your resume</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/12/player-vs-everything-putting-raiding-on-your-resume/">Player vs. Everything: Putting raiding on your resume</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 12 May 2008 11:00:00 EST. But as we learned this year, <em>World of Warcraft</em> is not the only MMO on Blizzard's plate. They've been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/blizzard-job-postings-show-progress-on-new-mmo/">occasionally tossing up job adverts</a> for people with various skills to work on "Next-Gen MMO" stuff. The folks at Blizzard have never fully embraced consoles and successful console MMOs are rare, so even though we knew Blizzard had <em>some</em> kind of console title <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2006/07/07/blizzard-to-venture-further-into-console-world/">in the works</a>, there was no evidence that the next-gen MMO project(s) would be for anything other than the PC (and maybe Mac).<br /><br />Well, the latest of the <a href="http://www.blizzard.com/jobopp/programmer-game-physics.shtml">MMO job adverts</a> (this time for a physics programmer) requires would-be applicants to have "programming experience on both console and PC titles." This leads us to believe that Blizzard is either making an MMO that will be released for both the PC <em>and</em> one or more consoles, or that it's producing multiple MMO titles with the same physics engine and that the PC and consoles will get different games ... or both.<br /><br />Either way, it's a tantalizing hint at what's to come.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/21/blizzards-next-gen-mmos-might-appear-on-consoles/">Blizzard's next-gen MMO(s) might appear on consoles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 21 Nov 2007 15:26:00 EST.
