This is a big week for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>, mainly because <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment</a> is forging ahead with its "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/06/dc-universe-online-rolling-out-megaservers-on-monday/">megaservers</a>" population consolidation. To mark the occasion, we sat down with DC Comics legend <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jim-lee">Jim Lee</a> for a brief Q&amp;A.<br />
<br />
OK, you got us.<br />
<br />
We sat down with Jim Lee because he's <em>Jim Lee</em>, and we're unabashed Batfans who will jump at every opportunity to talk to the artists behind the cowl. In any event, Lee did have some interesting things to say about MMOs in general, canon in particular, and his experiences with SOE and <em>DCUO</em>. Join us after the cut to read all about it.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/09/massively-exclusive-jim-lee-talks-batman-canon-and-dcuo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively Exclusive: Jim Lee talks Batman, canon, and DCUO</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/09/massively-exclusive-jim-lee-talks-batman-canon-and-dcuo/">Massively Exclusive: Jim Lee talks Batman, canon, and DCUO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 17:00:00 EST. Holy non-disclosure agreement, Batman! Yes, Robin, you are right. We can now talk about <a href="http://dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>. <a href="http://soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a>, <a href="http://www.warnerbros.com/">Warner Bros.</a>, and (of course) <a href="http://www.dccomics.com/dccomics/">DC Comics</a> have collaborated to make one of the first physics-based action MMORPGs. Now with the NDA lifted, we can finally give our impressions of this ground-breaking online game.<br />
<br />
A few of Massively's staff members have beta-tested <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online/"><em>DCUO</em></a> for about a month now. We have been biting our tongues for just about as long as we could. We have seen the highs and lows of this game. Making an MMO with proven mechanics is hard enough, but when a developer delves into unexplored territory, there are always huge risks. As with any game in still in production, not everything will be perfect. I will keep this in mind as we step into this DC Universe.<br />
<br />
Prepare to be amazed by the exhilarating graphics, excited by the high-octane mechanics, confounded by surprising glitches, and flabbergasted by the astonishing voice work. Step past the cut for the whole story and the screenshots I took as I was playing through the first six levels of <em>DC Universe Online</em>!<br />

<a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> was all over <a href="http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/">New York Comic Con</a>. The folks at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sony-Online-Entertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> presented a playable demo on the show floor, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/11/nycc-2010-dcuos-qanda-panel-and-fan-event-page-1/">an info-laden panel</a> highlighting character creation and a super-exclusive fan event with 500 of <em>DCUO's</em> biggest fans. Before the fan event got popping, Massively enjoyed the opportunity to sit down with comics legend <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jim-lee/">Jim Lee</a> and <em>DCUO</em> Art Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-anderson/">Mark Anderson</a>. <br />
<br />
Lee, co-publisher of DC Comics and executive creative director of <em>DCUO</em>, and Anderson shared some special insights into the game's development. Conversation ranged from <em>DCUO's</em> similarity to <em>Grand Theft Auto</em> to Lee's introduction to the MMO genre.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/13/nycc-2010-interview-with-dcuos-jim-lee-and-mark-anderson/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NYCC 2010: Interview with DCUO's Jim Lee and Mark Anderson</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/13/nycc-2010-interview-with-dcuos-jim-lee-and-mark-anderson/">NYCC 2010: Interview with DCUO's Jim Lee and Mark Anderson</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 13 Oct 2010 11:30:00 EST. The gods of <a href="http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/">New York Comic Con</a> smiled upon Detective Comics fans and MMO junkies alike this weekend, as <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> kicked butt and took questions at not one, but a senses-shattering <em>two</em> Q&amp;A sessions on Saturday. Conventioneers enjoyed a glimpse into the character-creation process at the "Creating the Next Legend Panel," and then <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sony-Online-Entertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> invited fans to a special Q&amp;A event afterward. And I would not be exaggerating if I said the audience reaction was riotously positive.<br />
<br />
Executive Creative Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jim-lee/">Jim Lee</a>, Creative Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Chris-Cao/">Chris Cao</a> and Art Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-anderson/">Mark Anderson</a> shared details and fielded dozens of questions about the DC-based MMO at both events. Discussion ranged from costume creation to endgame content to the game's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/04/dc-universe-online-delayed-until-early-2011/">recent delay to early 2011</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/12/nycc-2010-dcuos-qanda-panel-and-fan-event/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NYCC 2010: DCUO's Q&amp;A panel and fan event</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/12/nycc-2010-dcuos-qanda-panel-and-fan-event/">NYCC 2010: DCUO's Q&amp;A panel and fan event</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 12 Oct 2010 15:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> is entering a crowded field, but it's aiming to enter said field with both guns firing. The cinematic trailer alone is the sort of thing to make any long-time DC fan happy, showing a large-scale battle between heroes and villains in the vein of the best comic crossovers. In the new director's cut variant, however, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jim-Lee/">Jim Lee</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Tim-Miller/">Tim Miller</a> sit down to examine and discuss the trailer, from the large-scale goals of the video to the easter eggs that tie everything together.<br />
<br />
It's clear from watching the trailer and the commentary that the people involved adore the work they're doing and the source material, with everything from an homage to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_Come_%28comics%29">Kingdom Come</a> to Batman's role mirroring the end of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Knight_Returns">The Dark Knight Returns</a>. Click past the break to see the full trailer with commentary, which is certain to point out pieces that you missed. If, on the other hand, you haven't seen the original <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DC-Universe-Online/">DC Universe Online</a></em> trailer, it's available <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/en/movies.vm">on the official site</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/23/dc-universe-online-releases-the-commentary-edition-of-the-cinema/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DC Universe Online releases the commentary edition of the cinematic trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/23/dc-universe-online-releases-the-commentary-edition-of-the-cinema/">DC Universe Online releases the commentary edition of the cinematic trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 20:00:00 EST. What gamer hasn't wanted to be a superhero at one time or another? Superheroes and comic books have been a part of gaming culture as long as computers. Today we have more from the question-and-answer portion of the <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> panel at the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sdcc-2010/">San Diego Comic-Con</a> last week. (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/27/sdcc-2010-up-up-and-away-at-the-dcuo-panel/">Part one</a> of the panel was posted earlier this week.) Panelists included Creative Director Jens Andersen, Game Director Chris Cao, legendary comic book writer Marv Wolfman, Jim Lee, and the voice of the Joker, Mark Hamill.<br />
<br />
<strong>Will there be a mechanic for switching from hero to villain or vice versa?<br />
</strong><br />
No. You make the choice of hero or villain at character creation, and it can't be changed after that. This is so it is clear to other players in PvP who is on what team.<br />
<br />
<strong>Will current storylines in the DC comic universe affect the MMO?<br />
</strong><br />
The game will launch "pristine"; that is, the DC Universe in the game will be the popular, well-known one. Wonder Woman will be in her classic costume; Bruce Wayne will be Batman; etc. From there, storylines from the comics may start altering the MMO universe, but at least from the get-go, the game will start with a clean slate. <br />
<br />
<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online/">DCUO</a></em> will be getting its own bi-weekly comic as well.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/01/sdcc-2010-dcuo-panel-part-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SDCC 2010: Part two of our DCUO panel report</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/01/sdcc-2010-dcuo-panel-part-2/">SDCC 2010: Part two of our DCUO panel report</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 01 Aug 2010 16:00:00 EST. Are you pumped for <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> after watching the recent "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/24/soe-and-blur-release-dcuo-story-trailer/">Who Do You Trust?</a>" trailer or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/26/sdcc-2010-you-can-play-as-iconic-characters-massivelys-interv/">our own interview with John Smedley</a>? We can hardly blame you -- it's tough being a superhero waiting in the wings. While we count down the days until its November 2nd launch, there's a lot more <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online/"><em>DCUO</em></a> goodness to be had.<br />
<br />
Massively was on hand at the <em>DCUO </em>panel at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, where Jens Andersen, Chris Cao, Marv Wolfman, Jim Lee and Mark Hamill (who is reprising his voice work as the Joker) were on hand to answer questions about DC's upcoming title. Hit the jump for the full skinny on time travel, heroes, villains and Bat-shark repellent.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/27/sdcc-2010-up-up-and-away-at-the-dcuo-panel/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SDCC 2010: Up, up and away at the DCUO panel</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/27/sdcc-2010-up-up-and-away-at-the-dcuo-panel/">SDCC 2010: Up, up and away at the DCUO panel</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 27 Jul 2010 15:00:00 EST. It's a hefty schedule, but there are several highlights for MMO fans.<br />
<br />
Saturday the 24th will feature a panel discussion including <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Lee">Jim Lee</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Hamill">Mark Hamill</a>, <a href="http://www.marvwolfman.com/site/pageone.html">Marv Wolfman</a>, and members of the <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> dev team. They'll be going behind the scenes of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DCUO</em></a>, discussing the backstory and giving fans a first look at the game's intro cinematic. Those attending the panel will receive a <em>DCUO</em> VIP beta key.<br />
<br />
Saturday evening there is a fan event for attendees to meet Jim Lee and Marv Wolfman, have another chance at a <em>DCUO</em> beta key, and participate in a Q &amp; A with the development team.<br />
<br />
Finally, the SOE block party is a free event on Saturday that welcomes fans into the SOE studios for music, food, tours, previews, prizes, and kids events. Shuttle buses will provide transportation to Comic-Con as part of the event. <br />
<br />
If you're attending Comic-Con, be sure to visit the SOE booth for the full schedule!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/19/soe-makes-big-plans-for-comic-con/">SOE makes big plans for Comic-Con</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 19 Jul 2010 18:00:00 EST. There <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online">hasn't been a lot of new information</a> flying about on <em><a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/">DC Universe Online</a></em>, which is probably just a sign that the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a> team over at Austin, TX are keeping their collective noses to the grinder and pushing for beta sometime in the coming months.<br /><br />Actually, according to a <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=24855">Gamasutra interview with Wes Yanagi</a> that very much seems to be the case, although he doesn't out and say as much. It sounds like cross-platform and controller/UI iteration are probably giving SOE the most grief. We take it as a good sign that they're not rushing it, though, as it shows their seriousness at making this 'massively multiplayer action game' work.<br /><br />As for alpha and beta? According to Wes, <em>"We're still pre-alpha. We're really close to hitting our alpha goals, so hopefully in the next several months, we'll start talking about it."</em> Seems like the game is still a ways off into the future. So long as SOE doesn't release near a <em><a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com">World of Warcraft</a></em> <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/cataclysm">expansion</a>, we think they'll do just fine.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/28/alpha-and-beta-status-updates-on-dc-universe-online/">Alpha and beta status updates on DC Universe Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 28 Aug 2009 12:00:00 EST. When you are making a game based on some of the best comic book heroes of all time, it only makes sense that you bring in some of the best talent from the comic industry to help you in your endeavors. Enter <a href="http://www.marvwolfman.com/">Marv Wolfman</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Lee">Jim Lee</a>, two men who know their <a href="http://www.dccomics.com/dccomics/">DC Comics</a>. Marv has written for the <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Teen-Titans-Archives-Archive-Editions/dp/1563894858">New Teen Titans</a></em> and the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Drake">current iteration of Robin</a> while Jim Lee started his art career with <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Punisher_War_Journal">Punisher: War Journal</a></em> and <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_Flight">Alpha Flight</a></em>. Currently, Marv Wolfman is writing for <a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> while Jim Lee sits in the creative director's chair.<br /><br />Carolyn Koh from MMORPG.com recently caught up to both <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm/loadFeature/3374/page/1">Marv</a> and <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/350/feature/3375/page/1">Jim</a> and had the opportunity to ask them some questions about what will be seen in the game, how closely it will tie into the current run of DC Comics, and some of their favorite gaming experiences. If you're looking for a sneak-peek into what may be in store for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online">DCUO</a> and what goes on in the minds of these two men, look no further than <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm/loadFeature/3374/page/1">these</a> <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/350/feature/3375/page/1">interviews</a> hosted over at MMORPG.com<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/10/jim-lee-and-marv-wolfman-speak-on-dc-universe-online-experiences/">Jim Lee and Marv Wolfman speak on DC Universe Online experiences</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 10 Aug 2009 19:00:00 EST. The latest info about <a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> comes from a <a href="http://www.wired.com/gamelife/">Wired</a> article by <a href="http://www.deepmediaonline.com/">Frank Rose</a> which focuses on S.T.A.R. Labs, the futuristic glass and steel location familiar to anyone who grew up reading DC comic books or watched the Superman animated TV series. <br /><br />S.T.A.R. Labs, short for <a href="http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/S.T.A.R._Labs">Scientific and Technical Advanced Research Laboratories</a>, will be a hub of storyline activity in the MMO. It's fitting, as this is a place where great scientific advances are made, but also a place where things can go horribly wrong. This means it's perfect neutral ground to be incorporated into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/dc-universe-online"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>, and the location will tie in with the respective storylines of the game's heroes and villains. <br /><em></em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/23/dc-universe-online-creators-talk-about-s-t-a-r-labs-and-game-st/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DC Universe Online creators talk about S.T.A.R. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> team members on hand will include <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jim-lee">Jim Lee</a> (executive creative director); <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/marv-wolfman">Marv Wolfman</a> (writer); <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/christopher-cao">Christopher Cao</a> (studio creative director); and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jens-andersen">Jens Andersen</a> (creative director). <br /><br />The 'takeaway' from the session intro reads: <em>"This philosophical lecture will give attendees insight into the challenges and issues game designers and writers face when making characters good and evil. More importantly, attendees will leave with a better understanding of why this tension between good and evil is so critical -- not only for telling a good story, but for making a video game." </em><br /><br />This sounds interesting, and hopefully it's a sign of the emphasis they're putting on storytelling in <em>DC Universe Online</em>. <a href="http://www.gdcaustin.com/">GDC Austin will run from September 15-18</a>, and we're hoping to bring you news from the event. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/dc-universe-online-team-to-keynote-gdc-austin">GamesIndustry.biz</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/30/dc-universe-online-team-will-present-at-gdc-austin-2009/">DC Universe Online team will present at GDC Austin 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 30 Jun 2009 19:00:00 EST. But another comic book legend has joined the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DCUO</em></a> team: prolific writer <a href="http://www.marvwolfman.com/">Marv Wolfman</a>. <br /><br />Wolfman's career in comics spans decades, in fact he broke into the industry at DC Comics in 1968. Since that time he's been involved with numerous comics (and characters) that have made it into mainstream entertainment, such as <em>Blade</em> and <em>Teen Titans</em>. According to <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/01/30/writer-marv-wolfman-joins-dc-universe-online-team/">our sister site Big Download</a>, <em>"Wolfman's job will be to expand and add onto the storylines and plots that have been created for the game by fellow comic book writer Geoff Johns." </em><hr />

If you're planning on heading to the <a href="http://www.nycomiccon.com/App/homepage.cfm?moduleid=2577&amp;appname=100453">New York Comic-Con</a> this year then be prepared to see <em><a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/">DC Universe Online</a></em> in full force. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a> is pulling out all the stops this time around, including the first-ever villain play via a new playable demo at the SOE booth on the show floor. Something else attendees won't want to miss will be the panel on Saturday, February 7th where a mysterious new creative team member <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/25/killer-croc-comes-to-dc-universe-online/">will be revealed and opened</a> to questions along with Jim Lee, Geoff Johns, SOE developers Wes Yanagi, Jens Andersen and Jared Carr.<br /><br />Immediately after the Saturday panel, SOE will be holding a fan event where the new villain-focused demo will be available for further play. Plus, Jim Lee and Geoff Johns will be on hand to speak about the game some more -- as if they won't have been pelted by fervent fan questions already. Still, the whole thing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/27/comparing-and-contrasting-champions-online-and-dc-universe-onlin/">sounds like a ton of fun</a> for anyone looking forward to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DC-Universe-Online/">DC Universe Online</a></em> and the new superhero MMOs in general.<br /><br />Find full details after the cut.<hr />

The latter title is of particular interest, given how it builds on the DC Universe comics legacy which is significantly older than your average gamer. Given how much <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jim-lee">comics legend Jim Lee</a> is involved with fleshing out the DC setting into an online world as the title's Executive Creative Director, <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com ">Gamasutra</a>'s Brandon Sheffield interviewed Lee about the extent and scope of his influence over the game. <br /><br />The interview is a good read, showing us a bit about Lee's approach to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>, both in terms of his overarching view of how the game should be, and his attention to detail. It also touches upon what it's like for Lee to step away from the flexibility he's always had with 2D, and into the more concrete 3D of game design.<hr />

New outfits, ice guns, fiery hands and crazy Jim Lee-influenced jumping poses -- all these and more are in the newest batch of <em><a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/">DC Universe Online</a></em> screenshots over <a href="http://www.strategyinformer.com/ps3/dcuniverseonline/screenshots.html">at Strategy Informer right now</a>. We're really impressed with this blue armor-clad girl with her wind-swept hair and impressive poses. In fact, these are some of the first player-character screens we've seen and they certainly do impress.<br /><br />We're interested to see more of the character designs and hopefully the character creation process as well. If there's one thing we've learned over the years playing <em><a href="http://www.coh.com">City of Heroes</a></em>, it's that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/04/the-26-sheilds-of-city-of-heroes/">you can never have enough character</a> creation and customization options in a superhero MMO.<hr />

What some comic fans may be less familiar with is Lee's interest in videogames, even before he got involved with <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online">DCUO</a></em> as Executive Creative Director. Indeed, Jim Lee's twin passions in life are comics and videogames, he said in an interview with <a href="http://www.1up.com">1UP</a>'s Billy Berghammer. <br /><br />Lee discusses how he came to work on a project that brought those passions together -- <em>DC Universe Online</em> -- and what he's doing to breathe life into the game. The interview ranges from Lee's first steps into the comic book industry to creating the best-selling comic book in history, and beyond. Lee also brings up some of the goals he and the <em>DC Universe Online</em> team have in terms of storytelling, including the introduction of tertiary characters from the DC universe that haven't ever been featured in videogames before. (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambush_Bug">Ambush Bug</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Men">The Metal Men</a>, we're looking at you.)<em> "Introducing this to a crowd of gamers that never has seen these characters before is really exciting. Putting them in context and creating storylines with these characters is really the fun part of working on this game, and we're in the meat of it,"</em> Lee says.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/12/jim-lee-on-how-he-came-to-work-on-dc-universe-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Jim Lee on how he came to work on DC Universe Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/12/jim-lee-on-how-he-came-to-work-on-dc-universe-online/">Jim Lee on how he came to work on DC Universe Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 12 Dec 2008 19:00:00 EST. Michael Daubert, Studio Art Director for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>, blogs on Myspace about what it's like to <a href="http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&amp;friendID=170495422&amp;blogID=454274282 ">work on the game in the setting they've created</a>.<br /><br />It's a place where every Friday is "Green Lantern Friday" when studio employees either wear GL's requisite green or <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinestro">Sinestro yellow</a>. One pictures employees bringing their goldfish to work and willing them to perform office tasks. One tradeoff for having to dress in orange and green is that employees at the Austin studio are surrounded by artwork for <em>DC Universe Online</em> from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jim-lee">Jim Lee</a> and the <a href="http://www.dccomics.com/wildstorm/">Wildstorm Productions</a> studio. The video gives us a glimpse at the roughly 1200 pieces of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dc-universe-online-concept-art/">concept art Lee and his team have produced</a> that literally wallpaper the studio. Plus you get to meet some of the dev team as Daubert alternately attempts to stay awake through <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrum_(development)">Scrum explanations</a> or avoid tirades from his colleagues. Unfortunately we can't embed the video for you right here, but if you head over to <a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/ ">the <em>DC Universe Online</em> site</a>, you can't miss it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/06/an-inside-look-at-the-dc-universe-online-studio/">An inside look at the DC Universe Online studio</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 06 Dec 2008 17:00:00 EST. It's a generally busier day in Austin as the second round of AGDC sessions kicks off. Tuesday began for Massively with a look at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online" style="font-style: italic;">DC Universe Online</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sony-online-entertainment">Sony Online Entertainment</a>'s four-color physics-enabled brawler. Presented by none other than Jim Lee, the well-known comic book artist, the session was a look deep into the game's art direction and vision bringing the DC world online. Jim was joined by Jared Carr (art director for the game), Jason Smith (lead character artist), and Jens Anderson (creative director for <span style="font-style: italic;">DCUO</span>).<br /> <br /> Read on below the cut for hints into everything from character customization to the unadulterated fun of bus-flinging,<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/16/agdc08-jim-lee-and-the-artwork-of-dc-universe-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>AGDC08: Jim Lee and the artwork of DC Universe Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/16/agdc08-jim-lee-and-the-artwork-of-dc-universe-online/">AGDC08: Jim Lee and the artwork of DC Universe Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 16 Sep 2008 13:30:00 EST. You bring <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoff_Johns">Geoff Johns</a> on <a href="http://www.newsarama.com/games/090815-DCUOJohns.html">as writer for the game's backstory</a>. Geoff is the man responsible for one of the best runs on The Flash, his envisioning of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Lantern:_Rebirth">Green Lantern: Rebirth</a> and the highly engaging cooperative effort <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/52_(comic_book)">that was 52</a>. Basically, if you're a fan of DC comics and haven't bothered with them for a while, you <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;field-keywords=Geoff+Johns&amp;x=0&amp;y=0">should really check his stuff out</a>.<br /><br />According to the Newsarama interview with Geoff, he's only responsible for writing the general state of the world, its characters and the whole story behind why <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/comic-con-08-hands-on-with-dc-universe-online/">all these new superheroes</a> (that'd be us) are suddenly cropping up everywhere. Beyond that, nothing has been confirmed, although he did say it'd be possible to come back to write more stuff. In that regard, Geoff also says the game will be set more or less within the current DCU at the time of launch. Players can expect to see story arcs both new and old -- or something like them -- to eventually show their faces. If DC comics fans were only a little excited before this is a reason to start smiling, or maybe even do a fist-pump. Go ahead, we won't look.<br /><br />[Thanks, Haggs]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/15/geoff-johns-revealed-as-writer-for-dc-universe-online/">Geoff Johns revealed as writer for DC Universe Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 15 Sep 2008 17:00:00 EST. This blogger has always been rather jealous of San Diego residents. In hosting <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/comic-con">Comic Con</a>, they not only get to meet the best and brightest that the comic industry has to offer, but increasingly, they're getting attention by big names in the MMO industry too. We knew that SOE was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-a-first-look-at-dc-universe-online/">going to be in attendance</a>, showing off <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> in playable form. We've now gotten word, <a href="http://www.grimwell.com/?p=227">via Grimwell's Blog</a>, that they'll also be hosting a block party on Saturday the 26th outside of the Con proper for anybody in the San Diego area who wants to stop by, Con attendee or no.<br /><br />They'll be busing people to and from the Con to their location, where they'll have food, unreleased games to play, a live band, and plenty of SOE employees to bug about their games old and new. As icing on the cake (do you really need icing?), Jim Lee be making an appearance from 4:00pm to 5:30pm. To say this blogger is simply jealous would be a gross understatement.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/soe-throwing-block-party-at-comic-con/">SOE throwing block party at Comic Con</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 17:30:00 EST. Arguably best known for his art in the series <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_Hush">Batman: Hush</a>, Lee's credits include the X-Men, Punisher, Superman, and several titles from the comic label Wildstorm. The Authority, the cult classic dark superhero series, bore his penmanship in several places. He was at E3 last week with the folks from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sony-online-entertainment">Sony Online Entertainment</a>, because Jim is also the executive creative director on the <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online">DC Universe Online</a> project.<br /><br />We had the chance to sit down with Mr. Lee for a short interview, to get a feel for what his role on the project is. We chat with him about his work on the project, find out about his love for talking apes, and delve into his past as an MMO gamer. It's great to hear such a noted artist talking about his love for the massive genre - read on to find out about Mr. Lee's past as a guild officer in the world of Norrath and much, much more.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/e308-massivelys-chat-with-dcuos-jim-lee/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E308: Massively's chat with DCUO's Jim Lee</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/e308-massivelys-chat-with-dcuos-jim-lee/">E308: Massively's chat with DCUO's Jim Lee</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 Jul 2008 11:30:00 EST. He talks about the interaction between <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online/">DC Universe Online</a></em> and the print adventures, which MMOs he's played, and how <em>DCUO</em> will differ from other MMOs.<br /><br />It's in this last bit that Lee says something that might be a hint, or it might just be idle talk: "<em>To me, that is kind of how superheroes fight. Batman swings from rooftop to rooftop in Gotham City. The world of DC comics is an extremely venerable IP, with numerous evocative characters, locations, and villains. It's set to be the backdrop for one of the most ambitious new titles planned by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sony-online-entertainment">Sony Online Entertainment</a>: <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online">DC Universe Online</a></em>. We had the chance to talk with <em>DCUO</em> Creative Director Chris Cao and SOE-Austin VP of development John Blakely all about the game.<br /><br />Join us as we explore the game from top to bottom, uncovering tidbits about the game's raid gameplay, the underlying technology, holiday events, and the game's business model. We even ask about the game's launch date, with pretty well expected results. For a taste, here is what the game is capable of as far as world events: <span style="font-style: italic;">"We actually have a dynamic content system. What that means is that we hand-craft each event (like an armored car robbery or a hostage situation) and then we spin them up dynamically based on who is there and what they're doing. It allows us to easily replace every single encounter in Metropolis and Gotham and suddenly have Brainiac Attack or the Thanagarians Invade. Next week at Comic-Con you'll be able to play through that event."</span><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/e308-a-top-to-bottom-exploration-of-dc-universe-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E308: A top to bottom exploration of DC Universe Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/e308-a-top-to-bottom-exploration-of-dc-universe-online/">E308: A top to bottom exploration of DC Universe Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 09:00:00 EST. Did you hear? <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-jim-lee-talks-about-dc-universe-online-at-sonys-press-con/">Jim Lee showed up at the E3 2008 Sony press conference</a> and not only talked about <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online/">DC Universe Online</a></em>, but showed it too! Our initial thoughts on the video? While purportedly still pretty early on (even though Lee mentioned that they'd been working on the project for three years now) the footage doesn't look bad at all. However, it does remind us quite a bit of the <em><a href="http://everquest2.station.sony.com/">EverQuest 2</a></em> graphics engine. We just hope that it's only a visual resemblance and not a technical one -- as that engine has some troubles we'd rather like to not see in <em>DC Universe Online</em>.<br /><br />It's quite nice to see all of our favorite characters represented in this trailer. We even get some <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Adam">Black Adam</a> love, which was entirely unexpected! We're sure to have more information about the game for you as E3 continues, so stay tuned, go order some <a href="http://www.spandexworld.com/">spandex</a> and keep your bat-radar on!<hr />

Jim Lee has just appeared on the stage at Sony's press conference here at E3 to talk about Sony Online's upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dc-universe-online/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> title. He kicked off his presentation by doing a one-handed pushup (the press conference is going down on the same state that Jack Palance did his famous pushup on), and it only got more exciting from there.<br /><br />Lee told the audience that that creating the MMO based around the DC Comics universe is a dream for him -- not only did he grow up reading comics, but he's also a big <em>Everquest</em> fan -- he was the first Paladin to <a href="http://kyros.info/Paladin/Fiery_Avenger/">get a Firey Avenger</a>. He also said that the game will allow players to create their own superhero and/or supervillian, and then fight alongside some of DC's finest -- against the Joker with Batman, or pull a Bane and help all the bad guys break out of Arkham.<br /><br />Lee also showed off a bit of art from the game, featuring Batman (seen above), Superman, and the Green Lantern taking out baddies in a colorful landscape. We'll keep an eye out for more <em>DCUO</em> info when we speak with Sony later today. <hr />

The first <em>WoW</em> comic sold out incredibly fast, and now <a href="http://www.comicbookbin.com/dccomicsnews017.html">DC comics has arranged for a second printing</a> of "World of Warcraft #1" that will feature a new black and white version of Jim Lee's cover illustration.<br /><br />You can expect this second printing to be in stores on January the 4th, and you'll probably want to plan ahead or get in quick if you ever want to see one of these in the flesh. It's been a long time since <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> launched and up to the sale of the <em>CoX</em> property to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-studios">Cryptic Studios</a> added quite a bit more into the game. Not just <em>City of Villains</em> with its slew of additional content but also additional levels, tailors for extra costumes/costume redesigns, epic archetypes, plenty of new zones, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/14/cryptic-talks-pvp-in-marvel-universe-online/">PvP elements</a>, game balances, new powers, an item system that allows players to invent all sorts of things and even an alien invasion or two. Just recently players were given with another set of new powers that they themselves were able to help choose via the official forums! While that laundry list of additions is quite well and good, for me it still feels like something is missing from my super hero game.<br /><br />Largely, I think the problem lies with what the game engine is and isn't capable of rendering. The recent inclusion of customizable melee weapons and guns/bows has made me realize something. What about the guy who shoots fire or throws punches full of pure energy? What if I want to create a magic character ala Dr. Strange and green magical fire sounds really cool to me? Well too bad, my fire looks like everyone's boring red fire and there's not a thing that I can do about it. Yet in a game where customization is king, personal touches like green fire or red and purple energy blasts seem to me an incredibly important feature. I've paid a lot more than one or two months of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/12/mmo-subscriptions-report-who-is-beating-who/">subscription fees</a> just to design myself some characters in <em>CoX </em>and I only manage to get them to around level 14. Just imagine how much more money and time someone would spend given further customization choices.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/22/the-digital-continuum-concerning-superpowers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: Concerning superpowers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/22/the-digital-continuum-concerning-superpowers/">The Digital Continuum: Concerning superpowers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 22 Dec 2007 15:00:00 EST.
