<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic/">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a></em>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/scum-and-villainy">Game Update 2.0</a> brings some changes to the Sith Warrior and Jedi Knight classes, and today's two newest dev diaries from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare</a> detail the changes.<br />
<br />
Aside from DoT and shield improvements, the Accuracy Rating will mean much more towards sustained damage in boss fights. Each advanced class for the two main classes now has new skills and general improvements to the way skills are balanced.<br />
<br />
You can read more about the changes that have come with GU 2.0: Scum and Villainy on the official site.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/17/see-what-has-changed-with-swtors-sith-warrior-and-jedi-knight/">See what has changed with SWTOR's Sith Warrior and Jedi Knight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 17 Apr 2013 17:30:00 EST. Originally, I had my heart set on playing a Smuggler when <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> went live, so I had intended on not playing one in beta. But the temptation was far too strong. I played a couple of Smugglers to try out the different specs and see the storyline from a couple of different points of view. Unfortunately, that burned me out on the class, and I could never finish the story on the live servers.<br />
<br />
Another of my intentions when the servers went live was to max out a character as fast as I could so that I could get to endgame in a decent amount of time. Therefore, I picked a class that I didn't think would hold my interest: the Sith Warrior. Unfortunately -- or fortunately depending on your perspective -- I fell in love with the Sith Warrior storyline. I was impressed that an "evil" character could have such an interesting story arc, so much so that by the end I was really rooting for her to win.<br />
<br />
What I didn't know was that there was a connection between the Sith Warrior story and the Smuggler story. I was right there listening to the characters speak, yet I didn't understand at first why I felt that nagging feeling as if I'd heard certain things before. Once I did discover the connection between those two storylines, I sought out other story connections. I found out that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a> is full of these tiny links. Since it's been a year since release, I figured that it's safe to share some of my favorites.<br />
<br />
Yes, major spoilers follow the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/18/hyperspace-beacon-swtor-spoiler-alert/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: SWTOR spoiler alert!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/18/hyperspace-beacon-swtor-spoiler-alert/">Hyperspace Beacon: SWTOR spoiler alert!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 18 Dec 2012 12:00:00 EST. I'm excited about this week's topic. It's not often that I get to put <a href="http://swtor.com/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>'s misconceptions to rest.<br />
<br />
As I said <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/08/07/hyperspace-beacon-how-to-smoke-your-opponents-in-swtors-huttba/">last week</a>, my guild does recreational PvP, which is to say that we do it for the fun of it and not because we have to be the best of the best. This helps us enjoy the sport of it without having the pressure of maintaining a ranked-PvP score. Unfortunately, that also means we run into a lot of other players who don't know exactly what they are supposed to be doing in games like Huttball.<br />
<br />
Those same complaining players are also the ones who claim that their particular class is deficient in one way or another based on the PvP map. The biggest cringe in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>SWTOR</em></a> comes from Huttball. Naysayers complain that one class or another does something different or better than they do. Today, I'm going to break down a couple of the classes to show you how each of them can be more effective. Let's dive in.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/08/14/hyperspace-beacon-all-swtor-classes-are-useful-in-huttball-par/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: All SWTOR classes are useful in Huttball, part 1</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/08/14/hyperspace-beacon-all-swtor-classes-are-useful-in-huttball-par/">Hyperspace Beacon: All SWTOR classes are useful in Huttball, part 1</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 17:00:00 EST. As I mentioned in my <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/02/why-i-play-star-wars-the-old-republic/">Why I Play </a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/02/why-i-play-star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> piece, <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/32400"><em>Dark Forces</em></a> and <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/32380"><em>Jedi Knight</em></a> were two of the Star Wars video games I enjoyed most. Obviously, this was before <a href="http://www.bioware.com/games/knights_old_republic/"><em>Knights of the Old Republic</em></a>. In <em>Jedi Knight</em>, the main antagonist was Jerec. Although it's never mentioned where Jerec comes from or even what species he was, his most distinguishing feature is the cover over his eyes. At the time, players thought it was a type of cybernetic implant similar to that worn by Geordi LaForge in Star Trek: The Next Generation. It wasn't until the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Omnibus-Tales-Jedi/dp/1593079117/ref=pd_sim_sbs_b_1">Tales of the Jedi</a> comic book series that we learned that Jerec and others are a part of the Force-seeing humanoid species known as the Miraluka.<br />
<br />
If you choose to play a Jedi Knight or a Jedi Consular (or if you have 1.5 million credits to unlock it through the Legacy system), you can play as a Miraluka. I have been fascinated by this species since Jerec of <em>Jedi Knight </em>and Shoaneb Culu in the Tales of the Jedi after that. So this week, let's talk about this captivating species, its culture, its connection to the Force, and what its role is during the time of <a href="http://swtor.com/"><em>The Old Republic</em></a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/08/hyperspace-beacon-holocron-files-miraluka/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: Holocron Files -- Miraluka</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/08/hyperspace-beacon-holocron-files-miraluka/">Hyperspace Beacon: Holocron Files -- Miraluka</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 May 2012 21:00:00 EST. If it's true that gamers would rather play Luke Skywalker than Uncle Owen, then the Jedi Knight is the class to put that claim to the test in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic/">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a></em>. The Knight is the Republic side's melee specialist and classic tank-mage, who supplements her melee attacks with taunts, buffs, and Force powers. She operates on the front lines of the war against the Sith, protecting her allies and representing the Jedi Order across the galaxy.<br />

In the latest Friday update, the developers at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare</a> ask one of the ultimate questions: Which class is better? In this three-and-half-minute video, the Jedi Knight and the Bounty Hunter of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> are pitted against each other. The criteria for winning ranges between the best story to the most powerful weapons, but ultimately, it's up to you. According to the video, it's time to choose your side.<br />
<br />
Senior Writer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Hall-Hood/">Hall Hood</a> expresses that although the Jedi are typically good guys, "you get to be whatever kind of Jedi Knight you think is best. You don't necessarily have to follow the Jedi Code. In fact, you can violate it pretty regularly." On the other side, Writer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Randy-Begel/">Randy Begel</a> explains that the Bounty Hunter does not have to be the most evil all the time. "The Bounty Hunter can live by a code as much as the Jedi does. It's just that they don't always see eye to eye on how that plays out," Begel explains.<br />
<br />
Decide for yourself after the break; we have the complete video for your enjoyment.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/07/swtor-askes-whos-better-jedi-knight-or-bounty-hunter/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SWTOR asks who's better: Jedi Knight or Bounty Hunter</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/07/swtor-askes-whos-better-jedi-knight-or-bounty-hunter/">SWTOR asks who's better: Jedi Knight or Bounty Hunter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 07 Oct 2011 13:00:00 EST. Thanks to the new <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/systems/advanced-classes">advanced class page</a> on the <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> website and <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/367/feature/5273/Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic-Advanced-Classes-Interview.html">MMORPG.com</a>'s interview with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/georg-zoeller">Georg Zoeller</a>, we now know quite a bit about the skill tree breakdown of each advanced class. However, over the next few weeks, I want to take a look at a few of the classes and read between the lines of text. Several abilities are listed for each class, but how do they fit together? What does the complete package look like?<br />
<br />
The Jedi Knight looks to be one of the most popular classes to play. After all, what kid growing up didn't have a fantasy of wielding a lightsaber just like Luke Skywalker or Obi-Wan Kenobi? I'd like to give a general overview of the advanced class abilities and collate a comprehensive list of the announced abilities. Follow me beyond the cut to see how these puzzle-pieces fit together in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/07/hyperspace-beacon-find-your-focus/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: Find your focus</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/07/hyperspace-beacon-find-your-focus/">Hyperspace Beacon: Find your focus</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 07 Jun 2011 17:00:00 EST. We are often inspired by the <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> videos released on Fridays. I'm not exactly sure why the community team started these weekly treats, but I'm going to speculate that it's a way to show the future players that the team will be there for them when the game releases. It's a kind of comfort. Many newer MMOs have increased community involvement in post-launch game design. Maybe the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a> team is looking to tell us, "We want you actively involved in our game development now <em>and</em> after the game is released." Good for the team.<br />
<br />
This week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/25/bioware-releases-jedi-armor-progression-video/">video of Jedi progression</a> definitely inspired my colleague on <a href="http://www.gamebreaker.tv">Gamebreaker</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/garygannon">Gary Gannon</a>, as evident in <a href="http://www.gamebreaker.tv/swtor-the-republic-34-the-jedi-path/">Sunday's broadcast</a>. I thought he was going to jump out of his chair. I have to agree with him that there is a lot of stuff packed into that two-and-a-half-minute video; for example, we were shown some of the armor progression milestones for the Jedi Knight class. This inspired me to investigate the story side of Jedi Knight progression. After all, <a href="http://bioware.com">BioWare</a> is all about story, right?<br />
<br />
So follow me after the break as I set a side my conscious self and let the Force flow through me.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/29/hyperspace-beacon-ready-to-face-the-trials/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: Ready to face the Trials</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/29/hyperspace-beacon-ready-to-face-the-trials/">Hyperspace Beacon: Ready to face the Trials</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 18:00:00 EST. Due to what could be considered a lack of hard info on everyone's favorite Star Wars archetype, <a href="http://bioware.com">BioWare</a> has had many fans crying out in terror. Today, said fans were suddenly silenced, though not because something terrible has happened. On the contrary, the traditional <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> Friday update brings us a breathless look at glowstick-powered combat footage courtesy of the new Jedi Knight <a href="http://www.swtor.com/media/trailers/jedi-knight-progression">armor progression</a> trailer.<br />
<br />
The clip runs a smidge over two minutes and features ample opportunity to feast our eyes on various animations, attacks, and of course armor sets and outfits. There's no voiceover, and those of us who haven't played the game at the various cons may not know exactly what we're looking at, but it nonetheless looks (and sounds) pretty cool. Don't take our word for it, though, see for yourself after the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/25/bioware-releases-jedi-armor-progression-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BioWare releases Jedi armor progression video</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/25/bioware-releases-jedi-armor-progression-video/">BioWare releases Jedi armor progression video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 11:15:00 EST. <a href="http://swtor.com">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a><em> was an obvious hit at <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/pax-east-2011">PAX East</a>. <strong>Larry Everett:</strong> There are many things that can distract you from actually playing <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em>. Who wouldn't be distracted by the incredible layered scenery? I'd think the spot-on animations would make you want to attack <em>more</em>, although it is possible that you could attack the wrong target. Perhaps it was the vivid facial expressions that would cause someone to not make a dialogue choice. These have to be the reasons behind the fact that the Jedi Knight on our team completely failed to do his job in one of the most incredibly polished games and easy-to-slide-into games I have have ever played.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/16/pax-east-2011-hands-on-with-swtors-taral-v/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX East 2011: Hands-on with SWTOR's Taral V</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/16/pax-east-2011-hands-on-with-swtors-taral-v/">PAX East 2011: Hands-on with SWTOR's Taral V</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 16 Mar 2011 15:30:00 EST. If you haven't been paying attention, then you wouldn't know that <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> is going to make a huge appearance at <a href="http://east.paxsite.com">PAX East</a> this year. However, unlike past appearances, this presentation is all about giving the fans a first-hand experience with the game. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a> community team has promised Flashpoints, Jedi classes, and origin worlds that the fans can see, hear, touch, and feel. For a fan who has been following the game since before October of 2008, this is far more exciting than any on-stage performance.<br />

With all of the hoopla, it may be difficult to know every single thing that is going on. Last month, Massively was invited to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lucasarts/">LucasArts</a> for a whole day's experience with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare's</a> <a href="http://www.swtor.com/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>. One of the perks of living on the West Coast is that I get to attend all these awesome in-depth Silicon Valley events and really expand on Massively's sessions at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/14/hyperspace-beacon-testing-the-swtor-waters/">various</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/18/e3-2010-hands-on-with-the-old-republics-smuggler-class/">conventions</a>!<br />
<br />
For all my enthusiasm, I have to admit I approached this hands-on with no small amount of trepidation. I'm a huge Star Wars fan (I still play <em><a href="http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/players/index.vm">Star Wars Galaxies</a></em>!), but I fell out of "expert" range on the saga a decade ago. Like many of you readers, I've been wary of the hype and even warier of delusions of grandeur on the part of game companies trying to do justice to the IP. I was really afraid that it wouldn't be as good as I'd hoped and that I'd walk away disappointed.<br />
<br />
And given the parts I saw, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/">SWTOR's</a></em> not as good as I'd hoped. It's <em>better</em>.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">The character type that will likely be played the most in <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> will be the Jedi. <a href="http://bioware.com">BioWare</a> has been conscious of this from the early stages of the game. This is evident in the fact that there are two distinct Jedi classes: the <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/classes/jedi-knight">knight</a> and the <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/classes/jedi-consular">consular</a>. Yet, the designers have been the most tight-lipped about these two classes. They have said this is because they wish to get it just right before talking about it. But with this week's Fan Friday, things have changed.<br />
<br />
On the official <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a> website, a <a href="http://www.swtor.com/media/trailers/designing-light-side">new Developer Dispatch</a> called Designing the Light Side has popped up. In the five-and-a-half-minute video, <em>SWTOR</em> writers, artists, and animators discuss the most important things it takes to create the two light side factions. "<em>We want to give players the opportunity to be the heroic Jedi like <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Luke_Skywalker">Luke Skywalker</a> or the darker, more avenging type of Jedi like his father, <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Anakin_Skywalker">Anakin</a>,</em>" Hall Hood, a senior writer, explains in the video.<br />
<br />
On which side of the moral spectrum do you fall? Are you a hero-of-the-ages light sider, or a ends-justifies-the-means gray Jedi? Watch the video after the break and let us know.</div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/17/swtor-devs-dive-deep-in-jedi-design-in-this-weeks-dispatch/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SWTOR devs dive deep in Jedi design in this week's dispatch</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/17/swtor-devs-dive-deep-in-jedi-design-in-this-weeks-dispatch/">SWTOR devs dive deep in Jedi design in this week's dispatch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 17 Sep 2010 14:30:00 EST. In <a href="http://www.swtor.com"><em>SWTOR</em>'s</a> <a href="http://www.swtor.com/media/trailers/deceived-cinematic-trailer">Deceived trailer</a>, there was an odd shot of the Jedi leader giving a signal to an astromech droid. Per usual, the writers at <a href="http://www.bioware.com">BioWare</a> do not put anything into their trailers without a specific reason. This past Friday, that little droid was revealed to be a companion for the <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/classes/jedi-knight">Jedi knight class</a>, named <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/biographies/t7-o1">T7-O1</a> (tee seven - oh one). This little bot calls back to both <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/T3-M4">T3-M4</a> of <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Kotor"><em>Knights of the Old Republic</em></a> and, of course, <a href="http://www.starwars.com/databank/droid/r2d2/index.html">R2-D2</a> of the Star Wars movies. In fact, his attitude is very similar to R2-D2's. According to the companion page on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a>'s official site, he considers his owners to be more like partners and less like masters.<br />
<br />
T7-O1 was activated over two centuries before the <a href="http://www.swtor.com/media/webcomics/threat-of-peace/act1?comicpage=1">Treaty of Coruscant</a> and has yet to be memory-wiped in that whole time. He remembers every organic he has ever worked with, from the petty smugglers, to Senator Oodora of <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Manaan">Manaan</a>, to Captain Nico Okarr, and to Jedi Master <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Ven_Zallow">Ven Zallow</a>, whom we witnessed being killed by <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/biographies/darth-malgus">Darth Malgus</a> in the previously mentioned trailer. For your Jedi knight character, you can expect this droid to be an invaluable source of information. His surveillance, cartography, and data-slicing skills are unmatched.<br />

BioWare has not revealed where your Jedi knight will meet T7-O1, just like every other companion mentioned for this game, but rest assured, he's waiting for you somewhere in that galaxy far, far away.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/15/swtor-finds-a-companion-for-the-jedi-knight/">SWTOR finds a companion for the Jedi knight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 15 Aug 2010 20:00:00 EST. So says sage Obi-Wan Kenobi in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_Episode_IV:_A_New_Hope">A New Hope</a> (of course he conveniently leaves out the fact that the Order also kidnaps babies for indoctrination, but hey no one's perfect!). Following on from the guardian of peace and justice motif, <a href="http://www.bioware.com">BioWare</a> has released the first bits of information on Advanced Classes for <a href="http://www.swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic's</em></a> Jedi Knight characters, confirming rumors that have been circulating for the past week.<br />
<br />
Advanced Jedi Knights come in two flavors -- Guardians and Sentinels, with the former seemingly filling the traditional tank role and the latter using dual lightsabers to pump out the damage. Interestingly, the Sentinel Holonet description mentions "<em>control and focus are the hallmarks</em>" of the class. Could that be a nod to crowd control abilities as well? Be sure to check out the official <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>SWTOR</em></a> website for the updated Jedi Knight Holonet entry as well as a <a href="http://www.swtor.com/media/trailers/jedi-knight">brief video</a> showing the class in action, found just after the jump.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/13/bioware-confirms-jedi-advanced-classes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BioWare confirms Jedi Advanced Classes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/13/bioware-confirms-jedi-advanced-classes/">BioWare confirms Jedi Advanced Classes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 13 Aug 2010 11:30:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">To the elation of fans of <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>, the developers at <a href="http://bioware.com">BioWare</a> <a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/news-article/20100806">announced</a> that the Sith "pure blood" and Miraluka will be playable species for the <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/classes/sith-warrior">Sith warrior</a> and <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/classes/jedi-knight">Jedi knight</a> classes, respectively. On top of that, the Mirialan species will be available to Force push as <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/classes/jedi-consular">Jedi consulars</a>, and the <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/classes/sith-inquisitor">Sith inquisitor</a> can slash his dual-bladed lightsaber as an acrobatic Zabrak.<br />
<br />
In case these species names mean very little to you, here is a brief catch-up. The <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sith_species">Sith species</a> is a red-skinned race from the planet Korriban. They were made mention of in this <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/24/hyperspace-beacon-empires-strike-back/">Hyperspace Beacon</a> a little while back. <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Miraluka">Miraluaka</a> are blind humanoids who see via the Force. The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Knights_of_the_Old_Republic_II_The_Sith_Lords"><em>KOTOR II</em></a> character <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Visas_Marr">Visas Marr</a> was Miraluka. <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Mirialan">Mirialan</a> are a bit less familiar to the casual fan, but two of them are found in the Episodes <a href="http://www.starwars.com/movies/episode-ii/">II</a> and <a href="http://www.starwars.com/movies/episode-iii/">III</a> of the Star Wars movies, <a href="http://www.starwars.com/databank/character/luminaraunduli/index.html">Luminara</a> and <a href="http://www.starwars.com/databank/character/barrissoffee/index.html">Barriss</a>. Finally, everyone should be familiar with the devilish face of <a href="http://www.starwars.com/databank/character/darthmaul/index.html">Darth Maul</a>, the Sith apprentice who killed <a href="http://www.starwars.com/databank/character/quigonjinn/index.html">Qui-Gon Jinn</a>. He was the quintessential <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Zabrak">Zabrak</a>. <br />
<br />

"<em>For over a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic, before the dark times, before the Empire," </em>Obi-wan Kenobi explained to a young Luke Skywalker and the audience for the first time in Star Wars: A New Hope. This started the never-ending quest of finding out what exactly it means to master the seemingly limitless power of the Force. On that life-transforming statement, we begin in this week's Hyperspace Beacon.<br />
<br />
The Jedi Knight places Star Wars beyond every other science fiction story in world. The mix of science and mysticism takes us to a place that challenges not only our mind but our spiritual beliefs as well. The Jedi Order asks us to, "<em>unlearn what you have learned</em>," and to, "<em>do or do not. There is no try</em>." Then, as if to defy greater logic, they brandish a sword made completely of light.<br />
<br />
Let us take a few moments to rediscover these lightsaber-wielding wizards, find out a little of how they came to be, examine what differences arose over the thousands of years they existed, and investigate what you can expect from the Jedi in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic.</em></a><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/31/hyperspace-beacon-return-of-the-jedi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: Return of the Jedi</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/31/hyperspace-beacon-return-of-the-jedi/">Hyperspace Beacon: Return of the Jedi</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 31 May 2010 16:00:00 EST. Emphasis on non-melee abilities? Check. Robes? Check. Hm, if it weren't for those lightsaber moves, we'd almost have to say <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/classes/jedi-consular"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic's</em> Jedi Consular</a> is a "magic" class. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare">BioWare's</a> released the official page for the newly revealed class, and looking through it proves that even in a galaxy far, far away you can find clothies.<br />
<br />
The primary difference between the Knight and Consular is how they fight; one gets up close, while the other prefers to hang back a bit. Sure, the Consular can throw down in melee if need be, but when you command a significant degree of force powers why bother? Drew Karpyshyn is the senior writer for the <a href="http://www.swtor.com/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> team with plenty of experience writing characters from the dark side, but now he's stepping out of his comfort zone to take a walk on the Jedi side. The fun he's having writing the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/30/jedi-knight-officially-steps-into-the-old-republic-spotlight/">Jedi Knight class</a> comes through clearly in Friday's <a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/blog/20091106_001">developer blog entry</a>: <em><i>"Nothing says </i></em>Star Wars <em>like a brown-robed figure brandishing a shimmering energy blade of righteous destruction."</em><br />
<br />
Exploring the Jedi Knight class meant delving the <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Jedi_Code">Jedi Code</a> and how it works in theory vs. how it works in practice. What happens when you take that code and mix in a hefty dose of "what if?" is a recipe for all kinds of possibilities, and Karpyshyn is having a great time exploring them. His experience writing the dark side gives his version of "what if" a little edge, exploring thoughts of renegade Jedi Knights who are willing to bend the rules for the greater good.<br />
<br />
It's a fun read, with a great look into Karpyshyn's thoughts on the class -- you can take a look at the <a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/blog/20091106_001">full entry on the official site</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/08/star-wars-the-old-republic-senior-writer-talks-about-writing-th/">Star Wars: The Old Republic senior writer talks about writing the Jedi Knight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 08 Nov 2009 12:00:00 EST. Rumors and speculation <a href="http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=56275">have been floating around</a> this week about the Jedi Knight, so no big surprise when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare</a> reveals that, yes, Knights of the Jedi persuasion are in fact a player class in <a href="http://www.swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>. The news comes with <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/classes/jedi-knight">all the expected class page accoutrements</a> such as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gallery/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/2407556/full/">screens</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gallery/star-wars-the-old-republic-concept-art/2407551/full/">concept art</a> and a few videos showing off three Jedi Knight attacks. It's all standard practice information release at this point, which only slightly dilutes the excitement of the announcement.<br />
<br />
The videos all show the proper level of Jedi powerhousing that you'd expect, although we're not entirely cool with all the droid destroying that's happening. Sure, we're aware that unlike Sith, Jedi are limited to disabling droids and pushing things around but that's no excuse to pick on the little helpless mechanical people. Yes, we said people -- robots are people too!<br />
<br />
In all seriousness, this is probably the class reveal everyone has been waiting for and/or expecting all along. Jedi and Sith were a given, so from here on out it's almost entirely anyone's guess. Spy? Rogue? Droids? Wookiees? Albino Ewoks? Okay, that's a little silly, nobody wants to play a rogue over a spy.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-concept-art/">Star Wars: The Old Republic Concept Art</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-concept-art/#1255574"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/ca_20090102_colorstudy03_1600x780_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-concept-art/#2004016"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/05/ca4_800x257_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-concept-art/#1255575"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/ca_20090102_human_male_concept_863x1076_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-concept-art/#2243369"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/08/ca1_800x450_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-concept-art/#1255576"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/ca_20090102_ithorian_concept_1600x1375_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/">Star Wars: The Old Republic Screenshots</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/#1357047"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/02/ss_20090213_004_1600x900_thumbnail.jpg" alt="A Hutt" title="A Hutt" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/#1357048"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/02/ss_20090213_005_1600x900_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Cantina of the Hutt Palace" title="Cantina of the Hutt Palace" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/#1111058"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/10/ss_20081021_droidswithblasters_full_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Droids with blasters" title="Droids with blasters" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/#1111059"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/10/ss_20081021_tomblightsaberduel_full_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Tomb Lightsaber Duel " title="Tomb Lightsaber Duel " /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/#1111060"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/10/ss_20081021_trooperopensfire_full_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Trooper opens fire" title="Trooper opens fire" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/30/jedi-knight-officially-steps-into-the-old-republic-spotlight/">Jedi Knight officially steps into The Old Republic spotlight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 30 Oct 2009 12:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Bioware">BioWare's</a> <a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/article/20090807_001">latest <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em> dev blog</a> gives us a look into their thoughts and reasoning on the creation of the Smuggler class. Frankly, we're smitten with the idea that as a Smuggler we could romance a Jedi Knight. Yep, it's been decided. We're going to spend most of our time tallying up romantic conquests and witty one-liners when this game finally arrives.<br /><br />The rest of the dev blog takes a look at all the various aspects of being a Smuggler, such as combat, companions, loyalties and snappy dialog. BioWare also touches on the different varieties of Smuggler that exist in their lore. It's a fun look into what makes the class tick, so if you're considering wielding a blaster and potentially donning a cape that even Lando would be jealous of, we think you'll enjoy the read.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/10/get-closer-to-the-old-republics-smuggler-class/">Get closer to The Old Republic's Smuggler class</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 10 Aug 2009 13:00:00 EST.
