Both superheroes were forged in the depths of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic's</a> MMO factory and both are the "Superman" of their games, but that's where the similarities end. One is the child of an established IP, brought in to anchor the product and establish credible connections to the pen-and-paper version. The other is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/10/a-mild-mannered-reporter-the-changing-of-the-environment/">the ego of Jack Emmert</a> made manifest, an indomitable presence watching over Paragon City.<br />
<br />
But what if these two heroes did an epic crossover and engaged in one massive PvP session?<br />
<br />
Let's go to the board. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online"><em>Champions Online's</em></a> Defender is the Iron Man of his franchise, a gifted man who built a powerful suit of armor and gadgets to fight crime. With it, Defender has the powers of flight, super strength, energy blasts, and portable artillery -- not to mention being incredibly tough to take out. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes"><em>City of Heroes'</em></a> Statesman, on the other hand, possesses innate powers of strength, invulnerability, flight, super-speed, and the ability to shoot a lightning bolt up a criminal's bum if the whim strikes him.<br />
<br />
Who would win in this theoretical battle? Hit the jump to vote, and head down to the comments to back your vote up with crazy superhero logic!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/07/leaderboard-champions-onlines-defender-vs-city-of-heroes-sta/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Leaderboard: Champions Online's Defender vs. City of Heroes' Statesman</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/07/leaderboard-champions-onlines-defender-vs-city-of-heroes-sta/">Leaderboard: Champions Online's Defender vs. City of Heroes' Statesman</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 07 Nov 2011 10:00:00 EST. Everyone knows that a good mascot can make a difference between a video game's death and rabid popularity. Mario, Master Chief, Duke Nuke 'Em, Pac-Man, Samus Aran, Pyramid Head -- each one of these mascots isn't merely an aspect of the game, they are the virtual spokesperson (or spokesthing) which represents the game itself.<br />
<br />
Yet when you think about it, MMOs have had a tougher time producing mascots than other video game genres, partially because unlike other games, you don't play as the mascots, and partially because when you have a cast of thousands of NPCs, picking out one to elevate above the rest is a difficult job.<br />
<br />
Difficult, that is, but not impossible. Today we're going to look at ten MMO mascots (MMOscots?) that studios have tried to promote as the face of these games, to varying degrees of success.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/28/the-perfect-ten-mmo-mascots/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Perfect Ten: MMO mascots</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/28/the-perfect-ten-mmo-mascots/">The Perfect Ten: MMO mascots</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 18:00:00 EST. What's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jack-emmert">Jack Emmert</a> been up to since <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/23/massively-exclusive-jack-emmert-speaks-about-neverwinter-and-a/">surfacing briefly</a> to talk about <a href="http://www.playneverwinter.com/"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> a few months ago? Apparently climbing the corporate ladder, as <a href="http://crypticstudios.com">Cryptic</a> has just announced via press release that the game design veteran has been tapped to serve as CEO of the company that brought us <a href="http://startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, <a href="http://champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a>, and way back when, <a href="http://cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Emmert is replacing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-needham">John Needham</a> and says that, while the latter will be missed, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-studios">Cryptic</a> remains committed to developing AAA gaming experiences. "<em>I co-founded this company and am extremely proud of everything our teams have achieved. We will continue to set high goals for ourselves and under my leadership we will continue to meet them</em>," Emmert says.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/09/jack-emmert-appointed-ceo-of-cryptic/">Jack Emmert appointed CEO of Cryptic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 09 Mar 2011 14:30:00 EST. Even though MMOs are the products of great teams of talented workers -- from sound artists to writers -- it's inevitable that a few of the people behind the curtain step out into the limelight. It's a smart move, really; it provides a personal face for people to associate with the game, it keeps messages consistent, and it draws any potential hate onto one person instead of the team at large.<br />
<br />
It stands to reason that these public figures end up being some of the major movers and shakers in the industry because of their high-profile positions. From CEOs to community managers, these are the people with power to make decisions, the voice to change opinions, and the personalities to inspire millions.<br />
<br />
Oh, that last sentence is pure poetry. Let's re-read it again, shall we?<br />
<br />
So in our last <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/perfect-ten/">Perfect Ten</a> of the year, I've asked the Massively team to compile a list of the 10 biggest MMO movers and shakers of this year. All of these people now owe us cupcakes of gratitude. Welcome back, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Capsloggers</a>! (Note: professional nicknamer here, available for all your mascot-imagining, brand-revamping needs.) I hope you've all had a merry merry and a happy happy so far. And if you haven't, then keep it to yourself, because Massively is no place to be sad.<br />
<br />
Now the calendar's just one page, and of course I am excited. Tomorrow is New Year's Eve, and the end of the year means end-of-the-year lists! As we all know, 2010 has been a big year for <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, from its release in February to the introduction of Season 3 just this month. Skip away with me down the Memory Brick Road as we recall the biggest <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> stories of the year!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/30/captains-log-star-trek-onlines-year-in-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Star Trek Online's year in review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/30/captains-log-star-trek-onlines-year-in-review/">Captain's Log: Star Trek Online's year in review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 30 Dec 2010 17:00:00 EST. With all of the recent focus on <a href="http://us.battle.net/wow/en/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/07/massivelys-world-of-warcraft-cataclysm-launch-day-round-up/">its latest expansion</a>, it's no surprise that the industry leader is at the center of another round of "What will topple <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a>?" discussions.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-12-08-what-can-topple-world-of-warcraft-article">In an article on Eurogamer</a>, industry analysts and developers lend their thoughts as to what made <em>World of Warcraft</em> so dang popular to begin with, and what it will take -- if anything -- for another game to beat its popularity, subscription numbers and cultural footprint. Wedbush Morgan analyst <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Michael-Pachter/">Michael Pachter</a> declared that nothing will top the title for at least 20 years due to an insurmountable lead, although this became debated by the other participants.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jack-emmert/">Jack Emmert</a> thinks <em>WoW </em>will be "chipped away at" instead of toppled. <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com/"><em>Age of Conan's</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/craig-morrison/">Craig Morrison</a> thinks that nobody can consciously plan to overcome <em>WoW's</em> lead saying, <em>"You don't topple a cultural phenomenon. But you can join one."</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamers-first/">GamersFirst's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Bjorn-Book-Larsson/">Bjorn Book-Larsson</a> doesn't think there's a need for <em>WoW </em>to be toppled due to the size of the market.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/codemasters/">Codemasters</a>' <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-solari/">Dave Solari</a> imagines that the winning formula<em> "would have mass market appeal, with instant accessibility, would work on all platforms, particularly mobile, be incredibly viral and social -- like a feature-rich </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/farmville/">FarmVille</a><em>."</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/undead-labs/">Undead Labs' </a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeff-strain/">Jeff Strain</a> thinks that MMO studios should be looking at it a different way: <em>"They should instead be striving to achieve the same level of success with their own game ideas."</em><br />
<br />
Some even speculate that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard/">Blizzard</a> is the only studio capable of besting its own game, perhaps with its second MMO that's due to be announced in 2012. <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-12-08-what-can-topple-world-of-warcraft-article">Head on over to Eurogamer</a> for the full discussion.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/09/world-of-warcraft-will-reign-for-another-20-years-according-to-i/">World of Warcraft will reign for another 20 years according to industry analysts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 09 Dec 2010 13:00:00 EST. </a></div>
Today sees the launch of <em><a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/">World of Warcraft</a>: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cataclysm/">Cataclysm</a></em>, which represents a destructive "reboot" button on the world of Azeroth. The old has been made new by virtue of fiery explosions that have rent the very earth in twain, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/"><em>WoW</em></a> gamers will have to find their footing all over again. As you might imagine, it's made one big-ass mess, which is compounded by the fact that there are no janitor classes in the game to sweep it up (the next hero class, perhaps?).<br />
<br />
However, the notion of an in-game cataclysm is hardly the sole domain of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/activision-blizzard/">Activision-Blizzard</a>; on the contrary, large-scale apocalypses pop up all the time in MMOs. After all, nothing grabs the attention like the end of the world (but hey, you still feel fine)!<br />
<br />
In a list that in no way is meant to capitalize on any expansions that may or may not be on the market, we're going to strap on our Kevlar suits, slather our arms with 1000 SPF sunblock, and take a brief tour of 10 worlds that have dated cataclysms -- and lived to tell the tale.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/07/the-perfect-ten-mmo-cataclysms/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Perfect Ten: MMO cataclysms</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/07/the-perfect-ten-mmo-cataclysms/">The Perfect Ten: MMO cataclysms</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 07 Dec 2010 13:00:00 EST. </a></div>
Talk about whiplash! Ever since last week's announcement of <a href="http://champions-online.com/"><em>Champions Online's</em></a> move <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/26/champions-online-going-f2p/">to a hybrid free-to-play model</a>, all eyes have turned to Cryptic's other MMO, <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, as a possible candidate for this treatment. While <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO's</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dan-stahl/">Dan Stahl</a> said that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online/"><em>Champions'</em></a> move had "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/02/stos-latest-ask-cryptic-tackles-war-targs-weekly-episodes-and/">no direct impact</a>" on <em>Star Trek's</em> business model, the outspoken <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jack-emmert/">Jack Emmert</a> seems more open to the possibility.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-11-03-will-star-trek-online-go-free-to-play">In an interview with Eurogamer</a> earlier today, Emmert addressed the issue head-on and allowed for a future where F2P <em>STO</em> happened. For now, the company is going to wait and see how <em>Champions </em>fares before making any decisions about <em>STO's</em> future: <em>"We're not sold one way or the other with </em>Star Trek<em> yet. If people want </em>Star Trek<em> to go free-to-play then get in and play </em>Champions<em> and help make it a great success, because that would send a strong message. If we did Turbine's level of success that would certainly merit the discussion!"</em><br />
<br />
However, Jack Emmert says the decision isn't his alone and refused to commit one way or the other. He does hint at a fourth project that Cryptic is working on, one which is not fantasy-based and is "close to my heart."<br />
<br />
For speculation on what a free-to-play <em>Star Trek Online</em> might look like, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/04/captains-log-a-glimpse-of-cryptics-free-to-play-philosophy/">make sure you read Ryan's column</a> on the subject.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/04/jack-emmert-star-trek-online-may-go-f2p-yet-if-you-play-cham/">Jack Emmert: Star Trek Online may go F2P yet -- if you play Champions, that is</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 04 Nov 2010 20:00:00 EST. Jack Emmert, the designer behind MMOs such as <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> and <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/"><em>Champions Online</em></a>, <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-11-02-wow-sucked-oxygen-from-mmo-subs">spoke to Eurogamer</a> recently about the trend of free-to-play MMOs vs. subscription MMOs -- a timely discussion with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/26/champions-online-going-f2p/"><em>Champions</em> due to go free-to-play</a> sometime next year. Jack said in the interview that games like <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> and <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> are going to be the games that will lead the subscription market, and that all other games, especially those with a budget of $50 million or less, should consider a F2P business model. He says in the article, "<em>I don't believe that subscriptions are dead because there are 10 million or so people subscribing to </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/">WoW</a><em> that beg to differ. What I think is there are simply not as many people willing to pay another subscription in addition to </em>WoW<em>, in addition to their Xbox Gold membership.</em>"<br />
<br />
As the MMO market expands and more gaming consoles offer online pay-to-play subscriptions, the choices for consumers expand as the money in their wallets shrinks. Jack comments about you, about the gaming connoisseur, and about F2P: "<em>[Y]ou're just sampling it, giving it a shot, seeing if it works. If it doesn't, no harm no foul - you don't play.</em>" Given <a href="http://www.crypticstudios.com/">Cryptic</a>'s corporate decisions regarding F2P, the success of the <a href="http://www.turbine.com/">Turbine's</a> F2P games, and the rising quality of F2P games overall, he may be on to something. In all my time playing <a href="http://champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a>, never in a million years would I have expected the game to go F2P. Considering just two years ago, Jack Emmert said "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/gdc08/"><em>microtransactions make me want to go die,</em></a>" I don't think anyone could reasonably anticipate this bold of a financial move. <br />
<br />
On top of this, <a href="http://crypticstudios.com">Cryptic</a> is adding Archetypes -- essentially premade character classes -- to streamline character creation for new players. For players used to the classless gameplay of <a href="http://massively.com/tag/champions-online"><em>CO</em></a>, this is going to be more than a little weird.<br />
<br />
There's so much ground to cover on this news. I'm sure you all have a lot of blind speculation, and I do too. A lot of people will be doomsaying about the future of <em>CO</em>, but I think this is the biggest set of positive things for the game we've seen since... ever.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/28/behind-the-mask-the-silver-archetype/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Behind the Mask: The Silver Archetype</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/28/behind-the-mask-the-silver-archetype/">Behind the Mask: The Silver Archetype</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 10:00:00 EST. If you read about <em><a href="http://champions-online.com">Champions Online</a></em> in its first days, you would not have thought of it as a triple-A title. The game was full of bugs, the community management was not the best, and it just seemed like the devs were intent on shoveling out more broken stuff that barely worked. I think that, in particular, the first three or four months were the worst. <br />
<br />
If you were to go back in time and ask me about whether or not I thought <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online/">CO</a></em> would make it to its first anniversary, my response would have been: "Maybe, but it'll be bleeding subs if it even makes it that far." Since then, a lot of things have changed. I talked about the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/31/another-look-at-champions-online-six-months-later/">first six months of <em>CO</em></a>, but it's been a full year since that painful launch day patch. <br />
<br />
I'm not sure I'm even playing the same game anymore.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/03/one-full-year-of-being-a-champion/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>One full year of being a Champion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/03/one-full-year-of-being-a-champion/">One full year of being a Champion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 03 Sep 2010 15:00:00 EST. Depending on how much stock <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/10/rumor-atari-close-to-announcing-a-neverwinter-nights-mmo/">you put in the rumors</a> or in Cryptic in general, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/23/cryptic-and-atari-announce-neverwinter/">this past week's announcement</a> of a second Dungeons &amp; Dragons MMO -- pardon me, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/23/massively-exclusive-jack-emmert-speaks-about-neverwinter-and-a/">an "OMG"</a> -- either rocked you back on your heels or cooled off your heels. Something to do with heels, at any rate.<br />
<br />
In a Daily Grind this past May, I asked readers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/26/the-daily-grind-how-would-you-make-a-dandd-mmo/">how they would make another D&amp;D MMO</a>. There were a lot of thoughtful responses, a few instances of keyboard gibberish, and a contingent adamant that the D&amp;D license was locked up in <a href="http://www.ddo.com/"><em>DDO</em></a> and couldn't be handed out elsewhere. I guess the latter argument is a moot point right now -- obviously, Turbine doesn't have a monopoly on an online D&amp;D -- although its existence brings to mind not just a few questions.<br />
<br />
Is the world big enough for two online D&amp;D titles? What does this announcement mean for our beloved <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dungeons-and-dragons-online"><em>DDO</em></a>? Is <a href="http://www.playneverwinter.com/"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> positioning itself to be direct competition, or a different entity altogether? <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/23/massively-exclusive-jack-emmert-speaks-about-neverwinter-and-a/">Has the Cryptic crew learned its lessons?</a> In my final <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/exploring-eberron/">Exploring Eberron</a> (Rubi returns next week, so you may start doing your happy dance... now), I'm going to answer all of these queries in such a way that your world will forever be rocked. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/10/rumor-atari-close-to-announcing-a-neverwinter-nights-mmo/">speculation has been going on for quite a while</a>, and it's finally been confirmed: The Neverwinter Nights MMO is coming.<br />
<br />
Well, sort of. <a href="http://www.playneverwinter.com/"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> will be developed by <a href="http://crypticstudios.com/">Cryptic</a>, and <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/neverwinter/news.html?sid=6274162&amp;mode=previews&amp;tag=topslot;thumb;1">Gamespot was lucky enough to get a little one-on-one time</a> with COO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jack-emmert">Jack Emmert</a>. Something that he was careful to point out was that this is not a full-blown, persistent MMO: "<em>I wouldn't say MMORPG at all -- Neverwinter is a cooperative RPG</em>."<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.playneverwinter.com/"><em>Neverwinter</em> site is up and running</a>, with plenty of interesting details about the game. It's based on 4th edition D&amp;D, set for launch in 2011, and is inspired by <a href="http://www.rasalvatore.com/">R.A. Salvatore's upcoming trilogy</a>. The first book in that series arrives in October, so by the time <em>Neverwinter</em> launches, the world should be fully established. <br />
<br />
For the time being, Cryptic and Atari have provided a fair amount of resources for hopeful (and skeptical) fans to keep up with development. The official site contains a <a href="http://www.playneverwinter.com/newsletter">newsletter signup page</a>, some <a href="http://www.playneverwinter.com/about">brief backstory</a>, and the full <a href="http://www.playneverwinter.com/press">press release</a>. Bill Roper, who stepped up to fill the void left when Jack Emmert moved on to the company's COO chair last March, has announced his decision to seek greener pastures via a <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/node/595033">post</a> on the <a href="http://www.champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> website.<br />
<br />
Roper makes no mention of his future plans, but does stop to thank fans and colleagues with his signature style. "<em>Thank you all for both the support and the kicks in the ass that have pushed me to constantly evaluate and grow</em>," he writes.<br />

<br />
Hello again, everyone! Welcome to another installment of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, our weekly dose of <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> goodness. I trust you all had <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/06/captains-log-guide-to-the-klingon-tutorial/">a fine time with Captain Trout last week</a>, learning about the Klingon beginner's experience. While you were gone, the lovely engineers on the <em>U.S.S. Bob Wiley</em> have installed a brandy new graphics processor, so we're back up and running! <br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios</a> have had a busy week or so with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a>. First came <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/30/star-trek-online-offering-veteran-rewards-and-free-trials/">their big push</a> to welcome back players, which included a free weekend for lapsed subscribers. Then came the exciting news of Cryptic's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/10/ship-interiors-planned-in-the-near-future-for-star-trek-online/">development plans for the next three months</a>. And today saw the release of <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/node/1679">an update to Season 1.1</a>, which includes much-needed Memory Alpha improvements and the somewhat-delayed fourth Special Task Force mission, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/13/star-trek-online-takes-a-look-in-the-undine-terradome/">Undine Terradome</a>. I want to take this opportunity to highlight some of the incoming content that could make this the summer of <em>STO</em> -- and to ponder a few roadblocks that might get in the way.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/13/captains-log-a-look-into-the-future-of-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: A look into the future of Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/13/captains-log-a-look-into-the-future-of-star-trek-online/">Captain's Log: A look into the future of Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 13 May 2010 13:00:00 EST. As promised after yesterday's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic-Studios">Cryptic Studios</a> news, today we have an interview with the developer's new Chief Operations Officer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jack-Emmert/">Jack Emmert</a> and Chief Creative Officer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Bill-Roper/">Bill Roper</a>. If you're wondering exactly what these new titles mean and what Jack and Bill have planned for the future of both <a href="http://www.champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> and <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, you'll definitely want to check this one out.<br />
<strong><br />
Massively: When did the move to Chief Creative Officer occur and what's your overall job like now compared to your previous position as Executive Producer?</strong><br />
<br />
<strong>Bill Roper:</strong> When Jack took on more COO responsibilities, he wanted someone who could spend more specialized, day-to-day time with the teams. For the past month I've been working with the Executive Producers and various leads within those teams to provide design, support, and guidance as requested. I'm also a liaison between the teams and the executives supporting and helping represent their individual game visions. I assist in coordinating systems and content concepts and technologies between the teams while being involved in their top-level design. Shifting from the very focused day-to-day duties on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Champions-Online/"><em>Champions Online</em></a> to a broader role is a rejuvenating new challenge, and the teams have really welcomed me on. I'm not coming in with "the word from above" that must be followed. I'm here to support the vision keepers and creators of each game - to be a sounding board for ideas and a source of creative energy they can tap into.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/31/a-massively-interview-with-cryptics-bill-roper-and-jack-emmert/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Massively interview with Cryptic's Bill Roper and Jack Emmert</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/31/a-massively-interview-with-cryptics-bill-roper-and-jack-emmert/">A Massively interview with Cryptic's Bill Roper and Jack Emmert</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 13:00:00 EST. What all this means and what you can expect in the future from Cryptic will hopefully be answered in our forthcoming interview with the two men. <em>"100% of our focus is on making the current PC product the best it can be. There are no current plans for a console version of Champions." </em><a href="http://forums.champions-online.com/showpost.php?p=1502893&amp;postcount=18">Thus sayeth</a> <a href="http://crypticstudios.com/">Cryptic Studio's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jack-emmert/">Jack Emmert</a> on the official <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/"><em>Champions Online</em></a> forums, ending speculation when or if this event would happen.<br />
<br />
Over the past couple years, it looked as though Cryptic had console ports in its plans, from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/cryptic-may-be-porting-champions-star-trek-online-to-the-ps3/">bringing on board console engine programmers</a> to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/20/bill-roper-on-champions-onlines-launch-current-state-and-futur/">public plans of expanding their subscriber base</a> into the console market. However, when the date for the supposed console release <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/29/champions-online-on-xbox-360-later-this-year-star-trek-online-b/">kept getting pushed back</a>, players grew worried, and now it seems that the concern was justified. This might have been compounded by the fact that recently <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online/"><em>Champions Online</em></a> experienced a major transition as executive producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bill-roper/">Bill Roper</a> stepped down and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Shannon-Posniewski/">Shannon "Poz" Posniewski</a> took over. <br />
<br />
The folks over at <a href="http://thebigfreaks.com/?p=263">The Big Freaking Podcast</a> grabbed a bit of face time with Jack Emmert, Cryptic's Chief Operating Officer, to expand on this news as well as the future for <em>Champions</em> and <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. We might fight a lot of enemies in our MMOs, but a number of players will agree that there's one enemy that is bigger than anything else: the company that makes the game. <a href="http://www.blizzard.com">Blizzard</a>, <a href="http://www.square-enix.com">Square-Enix</a>, <a href="http://www.funcom.com">Funcom</a>, <a href="http://www.bioware.com">Bioware</a> -- according to this branch of the playerbase, they don't care at all about the people playing their game. All they're concerned about is making money. They just want to get your money by any means necessary.<br />
<br />
However, the people who claim that say that like it's a bad thing. <br />
<br />
Nobody ever smiles and says "boy, I'm sure glad <a href="http://www.station.sony.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a> is in this for the money." Oddly enough, when you start to think about it, the fact of the matter is that it's not only transparent that these companies are in it for the money, it's a <em>good</em> thing. We should be happy that most of these companies are there to get our money by any means necessary.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/21/being-in-it-for-the-money/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Being in it for the money</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/21/being-in-it-for-the-money/">Being in it for the money</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 21 Jan 2010 11:00:00 EST. We recently had the opportunity to ask <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic">Cryptic's</a> Jack Emmert a few questions regarding <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> and its PvP elements. With the looming open beta (tomorrow!) and similarly imminent February 2nd launch, we consider ourselves lucky to get some fairly definitive answers on topics like the game's Cryptic Store and the Klingon faction's future -- including if deeper customization is in the wings or not.<br />
<br />
It's a quick read, but with less than 24 hours until open beta kick starts, that's probably a good thing. We wouldn't want to take away from anyone's <em>Star Trek</em> movie marathon, which is obviously what everyone is doing the day before, right? But can the blame for this really be laid solely at the feet of the developers? That seems to be the typical reaction, as many of us get frustrated over these broken promises. However, looking at the various titles that were aiming for 360 and missed, perhaps we should look at what all of these stories have in common: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/microsoft">Microsoft</a>. <em>(Lest the fires of console fanboy rage blaze out of control, we're not exactly inundated with PlayStation 3 MMOs either.) </em><br /><br /><a href="http://www.vg247.com/2009/08/28/ms-foot-dragging-on-360-mmos-is-baffling-says-cryptic-boss/">Patrick Garratt from VG247</a> recently spoke with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jack-emmert">Jack Emmert</a> from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-studios">Cryptic Studios</a> about this issue, and his perspective on playing ball with Microsoft to get <a href="http://www.champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> on the 360. Emmert stated that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online"><em>Champions Online</em></a> for Xbox is almost ready to go, but lack of action on Microsoft's part is holding up the project.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/28/cryptics-jack-emmert-baffled-by-lack-of-mmos-on-xbox-360/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cryptic's Jack Emmert baffled by lack of MMOs on Xbox 360</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/28/cryptics-jack-emmert-baffled-by-lack-of-mmos-on-xbox-360/">Cryptic's Jack Emmert baffled by lack of MMOs on Xbox 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 28 Aug 2009 20:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/16/champions-online-explains-microtransactions-high-level-unity-mi/">post in question</a> was about <a href="http://www.champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a>, which explained how Cryptic plans to keep the microtransaction system balanced. Quite a number of commenters at Massively expressed the view that the game should either be subscription or microtransaction-based, one or the other, and not a hybrid of the two. <br /><br />That debate isn't confined to Cryptic's superhero MMO, however. The company's approach to microtransactions with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online"><em>Champions Online</em></a> will be applied to <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> as well, according to a recent forum post by Jackalope (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jack-emmert">Jack Emmert</a>) from the Cryptic Studios dev team.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/20/cryptic-studios-clarifies-microtransactions-in-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cryptic Studios clarifies microtransactions in Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/20/cryptic-studios-clarifies-microtransactions-in-star-trek-online/">Cryptic Studios clarifies microtransactions in Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 20 Jul 2009 13:00:00 EST. In <a href="http://g4tv.com/games/pc/40993/champions-online/articles/67726/Interview-With-Jack-Emmert/">an interview with G4TV.com</a>, Jack Emmert was more than willing to say that if <em><a href="http://www.champions-online.com">Champions Online</a></em> should succeed, then a villain counterpart -- possibly <em>Nemesis Online</em> -- would certainly be in the cards. Well, you can considering us shocked. It's almost as though were one product successful, additional but slightly different products would be pursued.<br /><br />All joking aside, we're happy to hear it's something that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> is considering. And so long as they please fans with <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Champions-Online/">Champions Online</a></em> we really see no reason for them not to create another game for supervillains. One thing Emmert was clear on were his design intents this time around, saying, <em>"If I were to do it over again, I would create a very different type of gameplay for villain worlds."</em> in relation to his first swing at villainy with <em><a href="http://www.coh.com">City of Villains</a></em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/16/cryptic-could-make-champions-counterpart-nemesis-online/">Cryptic could make Champions counterpart, Nemesis Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 16 Jul 2009 15:00:00 EST. But Beckett has named <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hilmar-petursson">Hilmar P&eacute;tursson</a> of CCP Games as the second most influential figure in the MMO industry (up from #4 last year), with SOE's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-smedley">John Smedley</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jack-emmert">Jack Emmert</a> from Cryptic Studios, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-jacobs">Mark Jacobs</a> from Mythic Entertainment rounding out the top 5. <br /><br />In addition to the major, established industry names you'd expect to see on the list, there are 10 newcomers this year, including <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/todd-coleman">Todd Coleman</a> from KingsIsle Entertainment, studio director for <a href="http://www.wizard101.com"><em>Wizard101</em></a> which recently <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/30/wizard101-hits-2-million-unique-user-mark/">hit the milestone of 2 million unique users</a>.<br /><br />While Beckett Massive Online Gamer <a href="http://www.beckett.com/estore/news/?eskin=subMOG&amp;a=10166&amp;s=118">makes the list available online</a>, the magazine offers background on each individual and how they've influenced the future of the industry.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/28/beckett-massive-online-gamer-names-top-20-individuals-in-the-mmo/">Beckett Massive Online Gamer names Top 20 individuals in the MMO industry</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 May 2009 20:00:00 EST. To add even more superhero cred to the game, Cryptic has hired writers well-versed in the comics industry like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Layman">John Layman</a>, of both Marvel and Wildstorm fame. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.pc.ign.com">IGN</a> is hosting a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online"><em>Champions Online</em></a> developer diary written by Layman that focuses on his work at Cryptic Studios. Layman introduces what he does,<em>"I'm the writer-guy for Champions Online, a comic book writer imported specifically to write a comic book themed game. And, just like writing comics, coming up with the right words, concepts, and plots is the very first part of a very long chain of work." </em>He writes about the process of hashing out the best ideas with other Cryptic notables like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jack-emmert">Jack Emmert</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/randy-mosiondz">Randy Mosiondz</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/brian-gilmore">Brian Gilmore</a>, and then working to tailor those concepts to 'comic book-ese' that works for <em>Champions Online</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/01/champions-online-dev-diary-by-comic-book-writer-john-layman/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Champions Online dev diary by comic book writer John Layman</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/01/champions-online-dev-diary-by-comic-book-writer-john-layman/">Champions Online dev diary by comic book writer John Layman</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 01 May 2009 18:00:00 EST. In conjunction with the good people at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-studios">Cryptic Studios</a>, Massively will be playing host to insights directly from the developers themselves! We should be seeing a developer post about twice a month between now and the launch of <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.champions-online.com">Champions Online</a>. If you're interested in following the insights straight from the team make sure to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/bloggers/dev-blogger">follow our very own Champions Developer blogger</a>, who will be doing the honors of posting these interesting screeds.<br /><br />This morning we present the first in our <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online">Champions</a> DevBlog series, written by Mr. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jack-emmert">Jack Emmert</a>. Mr. Emmert is head of Cryptic, the force behind not only <span style="font-style: italic;">Champions</span> but the much-anticipated <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online</a> as well. Our first DevBlog offers up insights into why the company has taken on 'yet another' superhero game. Mr. Emmert explains why they've chosen to don the tights again, and looks back to their work on <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.coh.com">City of Heroes</a> for inspiration. The video, titled <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/day_as_a_dev1">"Day as a Dev"</a>, introduces us to the Production Team. Chief Creative Officer Jack Emmert recaps the three titles that the studio is working on: <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/"><em>Champions Online</em></a>, <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, and one unannounced super-secret game. Most of the developers we meet in the video are part of the large <em>Champions</em> team, but all three games are represented.<br /><br />It's always nice to get this sort of behind-the-scenes look at the development process for an anticipated game, and to see how the different aspects come together to make up the whole picture. We also get to see how Bill Roper is doing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/03/flagship-founder-bill-roper-joins-cryptic-studios/">in his new role at Cryptic as Design Director</a> for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online/"><em>Champions Online</em></a>. However, we're going to have to award the "best quote" to Randy Mosiondz: "It's a challenging job, but at the end of the day, I make video games, and what's more, a super-hero video game, so there's nothing wrong with that."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/24/take-a-video-tour-of-cryptic-studios/">Take a video tour of Cryptic Studios</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 24 Dec 2008 09:00:00 EST. Cryptic Studios has just announced that players can now sign up for a chance to participate in the first Closed Beta of their forthcoming superhero MMO, <a href="http://www.champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a>, with the Beta beginning in mid-November 2008. Applications can be made <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/preview_application">at the official website</a>. The Beta is for PC only.<br /><br />Jack Emmert, chief creative officer of Cryptic Studios, announced '<em>This closed beta is an exciting step in the evolution of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online">Champions Online</a>... All of us here in the Cryptic offices have been playing the game for a while now, and we're excited to invite others in to have as much fun with </em><em>Champions Online as we've been having internally</em>.'<br /><br />As we've <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/05/massively-goes-to-dragon-con-cryptic-studios-qanda/">covered in considerable depth</a> here at Massively, <em>Champions Online</em> features <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/cryptic-reveals-more-about-champions-online-costumes/">highly customizable character costumes</a> as well as the option to create a super-powered nemesis for your character, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/05/champions-online-hands-on-gameplay-impressions/">action-based gameplay</a>, and a large-scale comic-book universe to explore. After speaking with John Layman at PAX08, our second <a href="http://www.champions-online.com" style="font-style: italic;">Champions Online</a> interview was with content lead Zeke Sparkes. We talked sound effects, travel powers, character creation, controls and zone creation among other things. In fact, we actually got a short period of hands-on time with the game prior to the interview.<br /><br />So far, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online/" style="font-style: italic;">Champions Online</a> had only been playable with the Xbox 360 controller, but we were able to finally try the keyboard and mouse controls at PAX. Instead of hitting a face button on the Xbox controller to do your basic attack, you tap an assigned number-key on your keyboard. As you do this, you build up energy and can move through the rest of the powers, which for us were set to the rest of the numbered keys. Overall, the keyboard and mouse controls feel tight and responsive for a game scheduled to launch in Spring of 2009.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/01/pax08-talking-with-champions-onlines-content-lead-zeke-sparke/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX08: Talking with Champions Online's content lead, Zeke Sparkes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/01/pax08-talking-with-champions-onlines-content-lead-zeke-sparke/">PAX08: Talking with Champions Online's content lead, Zeke Sparkes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 01 Sep 2008 17:00:00 EST. Amidst the rather large -- but also surprisingly polite -- crowd surrounding the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic">Cryptic Studios</a> booth, we were able to talk with the writer for <a href="http://www.champions-online.com" style="font-style: italic;">Champions Online</a>, John Layman. Discussions revolved around the breadth and depth of content within the game's zones and the possibilities of space-based zones lying in wait for higher level characters. Two words to get you excited: interplanetary threats. We also learned about John's fondness for sprinkling lots of homages throughout the game. Overall, it was a fun trip into the mind of a man who really loves zombies, pajamas and nerdy in-jokes that future players of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online/" style="font-style: italic;">Champions Online</a> will be able to find some humor from.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2008-general-gallery/">PAX 2008 General Gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2008-general-gallery/#1012344"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/09/jgehermannpax08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2008-general-gallery/#1012057"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/09/pax08_2-084_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2008-general-gallery/#1012056"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/09/pax08_2-082_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2008-general-gallery/#1012055"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/09/pax08_2-079_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/pax-2008-general-gallery/#1012054"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/09/pax08_2-078_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/01/pax08-interviewing-champion-onlines-writer-john-layman/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX08: Interviewing Champion Online's writer, John Layman</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/01/pax08-interviewing-champion-onlines-writer-john-layman/">PAX08: Interviewing Champion Online's writer, John Layman</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 01 Sep 2008 12:00:00 EST. We've <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/23/some-fresh-star-trek-online-customization-info-for-humanoids-on/">said before</a> that the main source of information on <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> at this point is hints and implications peppered through interviews with <a href="http://www.crypticstudios.com">Cryptic Studios</a>' Jack Emmert. The latest of those interviews is lighter on details than were <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/23/some-fresh-star-trek-online-customization-info-for-humanoids-on/">previous</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/12/podcast-interviews-two-star-trek-online-guys-gets-lots-of-new-i/">conversations</a>, but it's still worth a read.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/41253">Speaking to Ten Ton Hammer at Gen Con</a>, Emmert started out vaguely answering questions about character customization. Nothing new there. But it got a bit more interesting when he used time travel as an example of something pivotal to the franchise, but that's made difficult to implement by technological and budgetary limitations. He spoke as if he'd already given a great deal of thought to it; perhaps that's a clue that despite the problems, time travel is something <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-studios">Cryptic</a> intends to put in the game.<br /><br />Other topics included the uniqueness of <em>Star Trek</em> ship design, instancing, procedurally-generated areas for exploration, and travel time.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/27/a-star-trek-online-interview-about-time-travel-and-travel-time/">A Star Trek Online interview about time travel and travel time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 27 Aug 2008 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.crypticstudios.com">Cryptic Studios</a> made clear the basic framework of its vision for <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> immediately after <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/11/liveblog-info-videos-and-more-from-the-star-trek-online-liveca/">announcing</a> the game, but the occasional <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/12/podcast-interviews-two-star-trek-online-guys-gets-lots-of-new-i/">interview</a> or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/12/star-trek-online-faq-describes-pvp-rules-and-other-stuff/">FAQ</a> has revealed greater detail over the past few days. The latest example is a <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm?PLAY=1267&amp;GAME=352&amp;VIEW=videos&amp;bhcp=1">video interview at MMORPG with Cryptic's Jack Emmert</a>, who in the interview reveals specifics about character, race, and starship customization. He also talks about Cryptic's relationship with the previous holders of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> mantle, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/perpetual-entertainment">Perpetual Entertainment.</a><br /><br />As far as the customization goes, you'll be able to customize the "skin, eyebrows, antennae, and hair" of your characters and races. At launch, it's likely that all players will be humanoids. Ship geometry, colors, decals, names, and even serial numbers can all be set by players. It sounds like they'll use basic "kits" of tools based on which faction (Federation or Klingon) they choose.<br /><br />Emmert also says that "war games" within factions would be possible, allowing players to engage in PvP with members of their own factions in a limited way. He doesn't sound at all certain that it will be possible at launch, though.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/23/some-fresh-star-trek-online-customization-info-for-humanoids-on/">Some fresh Star Trek Online customization info (for humanoids only)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 23 Aug 2008 19:00:00 EST. Fans of <em><a href="http://www.champions-online.com">Champions Online</a></em> are getting their first hands-on time with the game at GenCon Indy this year. The superhero MMO is finally being shown openly to the public, which means a fan by the name of <a href="http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=8148&amp;page=3">ikky68</a> was able to take plenty of gameplay footage without being melted holy grail-style by Jack Emmert's laser eyes. There are four videos in total and they're each anywhere between two to five minutes long, so we hope you've got a little time to kill. Each of the videos features a different person playing a different character, which means a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/05/champions-online-hands-on-gameplay-impressions/">good amount of variety to each play-through</a> of the demo <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> is showing off this weekend.<br /><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">We have to say, the game is looking pretty good -- even through shaky-cam goggles. We loved being able to finally seeing the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/03/welcome-to-s-zzz-nake-gulch/">Snake Gulch robotic cowboy mobs</a> that the players are pummeling. Thankfully, it's very apparent that Cryptic's style of slightly tongue-in-cheek enemy design is fully intact. There's just something about that little bit of <em>cheese</em> that makes our superhero weekend excursions all the more enjoyable. Check out all four videos below the cut!<br /></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/16/four-champions-online-gameplay-videos-surface/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Four Champions Online gameplay videos surface</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/16/four-champions-online-gameplay-videos-surface/">Four Champions Online gameplay videos surface</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 16 Aug 2008 13:00:00 EST. Some examples of interview topics: post-launch plans for user-generated content, an economy without a monetary currency, and details about starship combat. Emmert speculates that cross-platform play and non-region-specific servers are possible, but that no final determinations have been made. Our own sister site Big Download has a great highlight reel from the event, noting that <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2008/08/10/star-trek-online-webcast-highlights/">there are only going to be two factions at game launch</a>. <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3169271">1up has an extensive liveblog of the event</a>, which gets point for catching all the nuances but is at about Warp Factor 8 for Trekkie-hating snark.<br /><br />Though the liveblog gives the idea short shrift, we think the thought that you might be able to go onto other players' ships is particularly interesting. Player-created content, perhaps? Combine that with a Web 2.0 website where players can show off their ships online, and you've got a deep space version of Better Homes and Gardens. The official site offers something almost as good as a home decoration magazine: <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/sweepstakes">a chance to win a lifetime subscription to <em>STO</em></a> when it is released. Check out the official website for details, and navigate your craft over to West Karana for our own <a href="http://westkarana.com/index.php/2008/08/11/sto-to-go-boldy/">Brenda Holloway's lovingly-cynical take on the announcement</a>. <br /><br />Finally, you can click through below the cut for the trailer and Jack's introduction by Leonard Nimoy.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/11/liveblog-info-videos-and-more-from-the-star-trek-online-liveca/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Liveblog, info, videos and more from the Star Trek Online livecast</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/11/liveblog-info-videos-and-more-from-the-star-trek-online-liveca/">Liveblog, info, videos and more from the Star Trek Online livecast</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 11 Aug 2008 09:30:00 EST. Every time <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> puts up a brand new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ask-cryptic/">Ask Cryptic</a> article we have a tough time picking only one or two answers to talk about. However, this week was pretty easy. The <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/dev_blog/ask_cryptic_07-28-08">very first question presented</a> asks about how deep <em><a href="http://www.champions-online.com">Champions Online</a></em> will delve into the concept of player-created content, whether it be mods or actual in-game content. Jack Emmert responded reasonably by mentioning that the Nemesis system, costume creation, power selection and power customization features are merely the beginning. Apparently we that we can, <em>"look to see [Cryptic] continue to open the door for more player-generated material." </em>Which really makes us wonder what that means for <em><a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/">Star Trek Online</a></em>.<br /><br />We must admit to this being <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/26/cryptic-studios-is-hiring-for-star-trek-online/">an exciting proposition</a>. It's our hope as comic book and MMO nerds that there's a future where we can submit completely unique costumes to go through moderated approval for each of our crazy characters in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online/">Champions Online</a></em>. Or even custom animations! That would be unequivocally and unabashedly <em>awesome</em>. Don't disappoint us now, Cryptic.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/30/ask-cryptic-touches-on-player-created-content/">Ask Cryptic touches on player-created content</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 30 Jul 2008 16:00:00 EST.
