<a href="http://www.soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a> has begun carpet-bombing media outlets with publicity relating to its upcoming <a href="http://www.planetside2.com"><em>PlanetSide 2</em></a> MMOFPS. The game has been in development for quite a while now, but up until very recently the devs have kept a low profile. Now the title's Twitter feed is exploding on a daily basis, awe-inspiring <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/take-to-the-skies-with-planetside-2s-aerial-combat-trailer/">alpha gameplay videos</a> are finding their way into the public eye, and interviews abound.<br />
<br />
I managed to get creative director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/matt-higby">Matt Higby's</a> attention for a few moments, and he's got some interesting things to say about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside-2"><em>PS2's</em></a> upside. Would you believe that MMOFPS is about to become a new industry buzzword? Read on after the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/26/the-firing-line-planetside-2s-matt-higby-on-the-mmofps-revolut/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Firing Line: PlanetSide 2's Matt Higby on the MMOFPS revolution</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/26/the-firing-line-planetside-2s-matt-higby-on-the-mmofps-revolut/">The Firing Line: PlanetSide 2's Matt Higby on the MMOFPS revolution</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 26 May 2012 12:00:00 EST. Before anyone asks in the comments section: Yes, <a href="http://www.istaria.com/"><em>Istaria</em></a> is still around. I've noticed that many players seem to think if something is out of their sight, it's out of every other player's mind too, but the truth is that there are many, many smallish and indie MMOs in existence that not only continue to do well but offer unique gameplay for anyone who might be interested. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Istaria/"><em>Istaria</em></a> is even still referred to as <em>Horizons</em> by many, even though that change was made a long, long time ago. Despite all of the outdated opinions and its status as an "older" game, interesting things are happening in the world of <em>Istaria</em>.<br />
<br />
I took some time and asked <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/AmarieAncalimon/">Amarie Ancalimon</a>, Community Relations manager from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Virtrium/">Virtrium</a>, about the latest string of patches and updates. <div>
	<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> is gonna get some mighty fine updates with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/swtor-patch-1-3-bringing-group-finder-legacy-perks/">onset of patch 1.3</a>. Game Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/daniel-erickson">Daniel Erickson</a> had a chat with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pc-gamer">PC Gamer</a> to shed some light on the changes in the upcoming patch.<br />
	<br />
	Players in <em>SWTOR </em>don't like standing still. As Erickson says: "You can craft on the move, run [<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/warzones">war zones</a>] from anywhere, and basically never slow down -- except when looking for a group." To put an end to that difficulty, 1.3 will include a LFG interface that players can use to find a pick-up group to run with (except for Hard Mode Operations, which aren't really designed for uncoordinated PUGs). The tool won't work cross-server, but that's because the dev team is looking to move to servers with a much, much higher population cap in the near future.<br />
	<br />
	The patch will add new perks to the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/legacy">legacy system</a>, most of which are aimed at customizing the way players level their alts. With a high enough legacy and enough credits, players could use XP perks to skip side quests altogether, although Erickson points out that that there are perks for Bonus Series quests that may tempt players to visit planets they've previously left alone.<br />
	<br />
	The last bundle of tidings of great joy for the patch is directed at gear. There's a fine balance between freedom of dress and the importance of visual distinction, and <em>SWTOR </em>aims to find it by allowing "social gear" to be worn anywhere. Additionally, "almost every single item in the game" will get customization options thanks to augment slots. Players can use augment slots on gear to add, well, augments, which will allow them to further customize their character and playstyle.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/the-old-republic-interview-on-patch-1-3-covers-lfg-perks-and-g/">The Old Republic interview on patch 1.3 covers LFG, perks, and gear</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. MMOs have to make money; that's a fact of life (and of business) <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> President <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mike-obrien">Mike O'Brien</a> knows quite well. <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2012/05/21/guild-wars-2-interview-monetization/#s:guildwars2-16">In an interview with VentureBeat</a>, O'Brien explained how the studio is handling the monetization for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> and blasts RMT companies for their practices.<br />
<br />
O'Brien addressed why <em>Guild Wars 2</em> is being offered not as a straight free-to-play title but as a retail product with an up-front cost. "The answer is we're really focused on creating the highest-quality MMO, not the lowest-cost MMO," he replied. "I think <em>Guild Wars 2 </em>is one of the best values in gaming, period. Where else can you get this many hours of enjoyment, of content, of polish, of replayability, for $60?"<br />
<br />
He also took the opportunity to expand upon his own blog post covering microtransactions from a few weeks ago. "Creating a microtransaction system that doesn't upset or alienate your player base is straightforward, once you clearly define what's in-bounds and what's out-of-bounds," O'Brien stated. He says that ArenaNet wants to be "open and honest" with players regarding the in-game store options and promises that these will be "non-essential additions to the game and convenience services" only.<br />
<br />
O'Brien also had strong words about the shady practices of RMT companies, practices that ArenaNet is trying to combat by offering its own in-game RMT system. "Where there's a real profit incentive, someone out there in the world will lie, cheat, and steal to make that profit, " he said. "By letting players trade directly with each other, we take the power away from RMT companies and give it to the entire playerbase."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/guild-wars-2-president-defends-microtransactions-and-in-game-rmt/">ArenaNet president defends microtransactions and in-game RMT in Guild Wars 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 May 2012 09:00:00 EST. MMOs in an existing franchise always present certain issues: You need enough conceptual space to advance a game's storyline, but you may not want to be locked in to never doing another title in the franchise. So <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Elder-Scrolls-Online/">The Elder Scrolls Online</a></em> has to be set in just the right time period for the game to work. In a recent video interview, creative director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Paul-Sage/">Paul Sage</a> and content designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Rich-Lambert/">Rich Lambert</a> sat down to talk about <a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2012/05/21/creating-the-story-for-the-elder-scrolls-online.aspx">the why behind the when</a>.<br />
<br />
Sage and Lambert explain that the real draw to this particular time period was the fact that there's neither a great deal of recorded in-game history nor a lot of huge events that might affect future titles -- it's a time when almost anything can happen without derailing future events in the universe. The duo also discusses keeping the game aligned with existing lore and ensuring that nothing gets thrown off by mistake. A long time ago on a server far, far away, the Imperial forces <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare</a> prepared a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> update to rule the online world: <a href="http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/05/21/star-wars-the-old-republics-13-patch-revealed">patch 1.3</a>. Called Allies, patch 1.3 will usher in a group finder, character transfers, and legacy perks.<br />
<br />
The group finder will aid in banding together interested adventurers to tackle operations and flashpoints. Lead Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/daniel-erickson">Daniel Erickson</a> said that the time is ripe for the feature, as players are spread out in levels and are rolling plenty of alts. Saying that BioWare wants to "respect the communities" that have formed, Erickson reports that the group finder will not be cross-server.<br />
<br />
He also revealed some of the other key features for patch 1.3. Additional perks to the Legacy system will allow players to customize their experience; we'll see new ports, earlier access to mounts, and bonus XP modifiers for PvP. The patch will also change social gear to fit the armor type of the class using it, server transfers, and the ability to add augments to any crafting items. Looking past 1.3, Erickson promises a "return to big content" with patch 1.4.<br />
<br />
If you're a fan of the <em>SWTOR </em>novels, you'll also be delighted to hear that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/drew-karpyshyn/">Drew Karpyshyn</a> <a href="http://www.darthhater.com/articles/swtor-news/20431-new-swtor-novel-details-revealed">announced that his next novel</a>, Annihilation, is scheduled for November 13th.<br />
<br />

Do you believe that the MMO genre has been stuck in a rut over the past few years? So does <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/christopher-lye/">Christopher Lye</a>, the global brand director for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a>, who publicly denounced the post-<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> trend in the industry as stagnant.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/170650/Is_Guild_Wars_2_the_answer_to_stagnant_MMO_design.php">In an interview with Gamasutra</a>, Lye stated that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> is walking the walk when it comes to genuinely challenging the status quo in the industry. "Honestly, I think the problem is that there's been a lack of change in MMO design and that <em>Guild Wars 2</em> is a reaction to that," he said. "People will call this risky, but we think it's riskier just to churn out the same MMO that everyone has played before."<br />
<br />
Lye pointed to <em>Guild Wars 2's</em> scaling dynamic event system and its action combat as examples of how ArenaNet is forging its own path. Observing that player consumption of content is "virtually insatiable," Lye said that the team has developed tools to allow it to implement changes and additions to dynamic events in hours, not weeks.<br />
<br />
Is this industry stagnation coming to an end? Lye says yes: "We're finally seeing a point where companies realize that they're not going to create the next great MMO by just copying what's come before."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/arenanet-guild-wars-2-a-reaction-to-sluggish-mmo-design/">ArenaNet: Guild Wars 2 a 'reaction' to sluggish MMO design</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 May 2012 10:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.jagex.com/">Jagex</a>, developer of the ever-popular browser-based game <a href="http://www.runescape.com/"><em>RuneScape</em></a>, is known for its rapid development schedule. Heck, I fully expect that this article will be outdated by the time I finish its rough draft. Players of the Jagex flagship MMO can log in to find new items, places to explore, and quests to do almost weekly. I tend to poke my nose into the game several times a week, so I know that a more casual player has endless amounts of content to run through. I might level up my construction skill and then switch to something completely different. I just recently spent an afternoon playing with just the <a href="http://services.runescape.com/m=news/bonfires">new bonfire skill</a>.<br />
<br />
Of course, those pesky developers are at it again: giving me <em>more</em> content to go through even though my highest skills hover around only the level 40 mark. This time it's the <a href="http://services.runescape.com/m=news/the-runespan">Runespan</a>, a brand-new area that helps players level runecrafting by offering them a one-stop shop that is more casual and non-competitive than the normal runecraft experience.<br />
<br />
I got the chance to call up some of the lead developers on the phone and ask not only about the Runespan but about the new FPS improvements, so be sure to check that out!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/mmobility-an-exclusive-look-at-the-runespan-in-runescape/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MMObility: An exclusive look at the Runespan in RuneScape</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/mmobility-an-exclusive-look-at-the-runespan-in-runescape/">MMObility: An exclusive look at the Runespan in RuneScape</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 18 May 2012 19:00:00 EST. Last week I talked a bit about a couple of flight sim shooters coming soon to a PC near you. One of them is <a href="http://www.worldofwarplanes.com"><em>World of Warplanes</em></a>, the followup title to <a href="http://www.wargaming.net">Wargaming.net's</a> ubiquitous <a href="http://www.worldoftanks.com"><em>World of Tanks</em></a> hit.<br />
<br />
The World War II action MMO masters are slipping the surly bonds of earth with a new lobby-based battler that's currently flying through the early phases of its global alpha test. I had a few burning questions for the devs, including specifics on the matchmaking system, progression, and the possibility of historical scenarios. Shields generally aren't thought of as a weapon; they're usually seen as the exact <em>opposite</em> of a weapon. But in the superheroic milieu, all that changes. A shield is something to be used offensively, and in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DC-Universe-Online/">DC Universe Online</a></em>'s next major update, players will begin wielding the shield for their own superheroic (or villainous) capers. <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/05/17/exclusive-behind-the-scenes-look-at-dc-universe-onlines-next-weapon-type-the-shield/">A recent interview</a> with creative director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jens-Andersen/">Jens Andersen</a> discusses the intended role of the shield in combat.<br />
<br />
Andersen explains that while the new weapon comes along in a very PvP-centered update, it's not meant to be used specifically for PvP; the team just wants to have something new for players to enjoy no matter what. In play, shields are similar to a staff weapon, but unlike most other weapons, the shield can continue to build a combo after a heavy strike by moving back to light strikes. That should make the shield a very aggressive option -- perhaps odd for something that's <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/05/17/exclusive-behind-the-scenes-look-at-dc-universe-onlines-next-weapon-type-the-shield/">not generally thought of as a weapon</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/dc-universe-online-shows-off-the-new-shield-weapon/">DC Universe Online shows off the new Shield weapon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 May 2012 23:00:00 EST. Two of the biggest cornerstones of <a href="http://www.gamersfirst.com/fallenearth/"><em>Fallen Earth</em></a> have always been crafting and PvP, and its these cornerstones that GamersFirst is enriching come patch 2.4. The patch, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/fallen-earth-2-4-patch-to-feature-territory-control-automated-h/">called Global Territory Control</a>, is taking these elements and firing them up in ways that any PvPer or crafter should find exciting.<br />

The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/22/the-anvil-of-crom-age-of-conan-year-three-retrospective/">last time</a> I did an anniversary retrospective for <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a>, we had a recent expansion, some new dungeon content, and several class revamps fresh on our minds. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/16/age-of-conan-anniversary-retrospective/">year before that</a>, we had the earth-shaking combat and itemization changes. This past year, the major development was, of course, the switch to a freemium business model, followed closely by the game's first adventure pack.<br />
<br />
Join me after the break for a quick rundown on the last 12 months as they happened in Hyboria, as well as an anniversary interview with game director Craig "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/craig-morrison">Silirrion</a>" Morrison that sheds a bit of light on the crafting revamp.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/the-anvil-of-crom-age-of-conan-turns-four-taps-swg-for-craftin/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Anvil of Crom: Age of Conan turns four, taps SWG for crafting inspiration</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/the-anvil-of-crom-age-of-conan-turns-four-taps-swg-for-craftin/">The Anvil of Crom: Age of Conan turns four, taps SWG for crafting inspiration</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 May 2012 10:30:00 EST. What's it like to pen the narrative for one of the most anticipated MMORPGs, well, ever? It's quite different from writing a novel or a screenplay, according to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/angel-mccoy">Angel McCoy</a>. She joins <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> lead writer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bobby-stein">Bobby Stein</a> and Peter "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/peter-fries">The Explorer</a>" Fries for an MMO story-flavored sit-down with fan site <a href="http://thepaletree.net/2012/05/15/writing-your-story-an-interview-with-the-writers-of-guild-wars-2/">Under the Pale Tree</a>.<br />
<br />
The interview is a lengthy one (who knew that writers could be so wordy?), and it covers a bunch of ground including the megalithic sprawl of <em>GW2's</em> narrative, the challenges inherent in writing particular races, and the differences between in-game dialogue and cutscene exposition. There's more to it, of course, but honestly the thing is so huge that we're going to go finish reading it after we've jotted down this here news post.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/guild-wars-2-writers-talk-at-length-about-mmo-story/">Guild Wars 2 writers talk (at length) about MMO story</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 16 May 2012 13:00:00 EST. Recently, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/KingsIsle-entertainment/">KingsIsle</a> announced that the world of the Spiral was going to branch out into the high seas in the studio's newest MMO, <a href="http://pirate101.com"><em>Pirate101</em></a>. There are many things about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Pirate101/"><em>Pirate101</em></a> that will feel familiar to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Wizard101/">Wizard101</a></em> fans, but the game has several features that definitely make it stand apart as more than just a sequel. Combat is not card-based; it's more like a tactical board game. Companions, rather than trading cards, play a key role in the pirate arsenal, and of course, players will be traveling (and fighting!) on their very own pirate ships.<br />
<br />
Massively had a chance to talk with <em>Pirate101's</em> Lead Creative Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/sam-johnson/">Sam Johnson</a> to hear more about what players will see from KingsIsle's upcoming MMO. So grab your cutlass, don your tricorne, and read on for more details!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/swashbucklers-ships-and-high-seas-hijinks-kingsisle-talks-pir/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Swashbucklers, ships, and high seas hijinks: KingsIsle talks Pirate101</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/swashbucklers-ships-and-high-seas-hijinks-kingsisle-talks-pir/">Swashbucklers, ships, and high seas hijinks: KingsIsle talks Pirate101</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 15 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. When Update 1.2 launched for <a href="http://swtor.com/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>, most players witnessed some major changes to their classes. In my opinion, these changes weren't game-breaking, but they did require that some players re-evaluate how they played. Some classes were changed so drastically in this patch players claimed they felt as if they were truly playing a completely different class.<br />
<br />
Major changes like this do not happen without reason, and from my time spent with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>SWTOR</em></a> developers, I know that they are passionately interested in making their game the best it can be. So I asked Game Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/james-ohlen/">James Ohlen</a> some questions about these mechanical changes. In true James Ohlen fashion, he was more than happy to answer in intricate detail, and I'm excited to bring you those answers here in the <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/hyperspace-beacon">Hyperspace Beacon</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/hyperspace-beacon-swtors-james-ohlen-shares-the-formula-behind/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: SWTOR's James Ohlen shares the formula behind PvP nerfs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/hyperspace-beacon-swtors-james-ohlen-shares-the-formula-behind/">Hyperspace Beacon: SWTOR's James Ohlen shares the formula behind PvP nerfs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 15 May 2012 14:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/namaste-entertainment">Namaste Entertainment's</a> upcoming MMO-narrative-building toolset, <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/storybricks">Storybricks</a></em>, is quickly picking up steam among the massively multiplayer gaming community. The quirky title recently released a public alpha client to coincide with the project's Kickstarter campaign, and I had the opportunity to sit down with Namaste's <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/brian-green">Brian "Psychochild" Green</a> and <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/kelly-heckman">Kelly Heckman</a> for a tour of the client as well as a short interview on what the future holds for the toolbox-cum-MMOG project.<br />
<br />
Follow on past the cut and join me as I try to pinpoint Namaste's goals for the future of <em>Storybricks</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/storybricks-demo-and-interview-with-brian-psychochild-green-an/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Storybricks demo and interview with Brian 'Psychochild' Green and Kelly Heckman</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/storybricks-demo-and-interview-with-brian-psychochild-green-an/">Storybricks demo and interview with Brian 'Psychochild' Green and Kelly Heckman</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 14 May 2012 17:00:00 EST. Tom Purdue, admired owner and operator of <a href="http://thefriendlynecromancer.blogspot.com/">The Friendly Necromancer</a> blog and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Wizard101/">Wizard101</a></em> fansite, has announced today that he will be <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/KingsIsle-entertainment/">KingsIsle Entertainment's</a> new community manager for the upcoming <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Pirate101/">Pirate101</a></em> MMO.<br />
<br />
As that transition from fan to employee is always a fascinating transformation, we recognize that it's not an easy decision. Massively itself has raised a handful of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/rubi-bayer">MMO</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/james-egan">community</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/seraphina-brennan">managers</a>, so <a href="http://thefriendlynecromancer.blogspot.com/2012/05/ding-new-badge-earned.html">this news</a> is particularly of interest to us. For that reason, we tracked Tom down and asked him some questions about his new role at KingsIsle. Saying that it "feels as though a giant weight has been lifted off [his team's] shoulders" now that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tera/"><em>TERA </em></a>has launched, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/en-masse-entertainment">En Masse</a> Senior Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/brian-knox">Brian Knox</a> has turned his attention to the immediate and far future of the game. He says that the team is hard at work ironing out "pain points" for players, but his big passion is working to make the PvP experience even better and to roll out the battlegrounds this summer.<br />
<br />
"I want to continue to slowly iterate our PvP-server rules," Knox said in an interview published yesterday. "I think <em>TERA's</em> skill-based system is a natural fit for PvP players, and I want to develop a system that encourages and rewards PvP participants."<br />
<br />
Knox addressed the pace of the leveling experience (he says it should be a "smooth and even ride" if players follow the story and do all the quests), the price of teleportation scrolls (expensive for lowbies, affordable for veterans), and what to do at the endgame (answer: a lot). As more players reach the high levels, En Masse is preparing to juice up its nexuses and political system, both of which require a decent amount of participants to work.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/09/teras-senior-producer-looks-at-the-games-past-present-and-fu/">TERA's senior producer looks at the game's past, present, and future</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 09 May 2012 09:00:00 EST. "Whenever we design a new feature we always ask ourselves how it impacts our players' ability to play with their friends," <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> stated about <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/">Guild Wars 2</a></em>. <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/05/08/guild-wars-2-wants-you-to-play-with-friends/">In an interview</a> focused on connecting players together, Flannum made it clear that the team was looking for every possible opportunity to pave the way for social hookups.<br />
<br />
Flannum addressed the specifics of how <em>Guild Wars 2's</em> servers work in relation to transfers. While there is a traditional paid transfer service (which can be used only every seven days), all players will have the ability to hop over to friends' servers as a guest. Player team-ups are further made possible by the dynamic level-adjusting system that scales players down to the zone they're occupying.<br />
<br />
This process is made easier by ArenaNet's decision to make friend lists and guilds account-wide instead of specific to a server. So while each guild has a home server, other chapters can exist elsewhere. Flannum also said that the team is carefully structuring its PvP system so that it will be free from potential abuse by server guesting.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/08/guild-wars-2-wants-you-to-play-with-your-friends-no-matter-what/">Guild Wars 2 wants you to play with your friends no matter what</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 May 2012 20:30:00 EST. Would-be citizens of <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/neverwinter">Neverwinter</a></em> are certainly waiting anxiously for <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/cryptic-studios">Cryptic Studios'</a> upcoming venture into the Jewel of the North, which <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/07/pax-east-2012-neverwinter-discussion-and-impressions/">we received favorably at PAX East</a> last month. Well, unfortunately we're going to have to wait a bit longer, but in the mean time, MMORPG.com has a new interview with <em>Neverwinter</em>'s Lead Producer, <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/andy-velasquez">Andy Velasquez</a>, to shine some light on the most civilized city in Faerun.<br />
<br />
Velasquez answers questions on a number of topics, including the decision to use 4th edition rules, the amount of content that will be available at launch, and the difference between a raid and a Dungeon Delve. It's definitely worth a read for anyone interested in the upcoming title, so if you're one of those people, head on over to the full interview and give it a look.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/07/cryptic-studios-andy-velasquez-talks-neverwinter/">Cryptic Studios' Andy Velasquez talks Neverwinter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 07 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. "It's not our game," says <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jon-lander">Jon Lander</a>. He's talking about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, and he makes no bones about the firm's role in the ongoing internet spaceship drama that is New Eden. "We're the janitors of it; we sweep up and make sure the power's still running and whatever, but it's their game. <em>EVE</em> is the sum history of their personal interactions, and we don't own that. We just look after it."<br />
<br />
The "their" Lander refers to is the game's playerbase, of course, and he tells <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-05-03-ccp-games-embracing-the-law-of-unintended-consequences">GamesIndustry.biz</a> that despite the turmoil of the last 12 months, the <em>EVE</em> property is none the worse for wear (and in fact it may be getting stronger due to a design re-focus and the imminent arrival of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a>).<br />
<br />
Ultimately the interview brings no new information to the table, but it does serve as a handy recap of recent <em>EVE</em> events. It also offers up more than a few juicy quotes from both Lander and lead game designer Kristoffer "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-soundwave">CCP Soundwave</a>" Touborg.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/03/new-ccp-interview-recaps-recent-eve-turmoil-looks-forward/">New CCP interview recaps recent EVE turmoil, looks forward</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 03 May 2012 10:00:00 EST. "Who needs publishers any more? I certainly don't. I couldn't care less about them at this stage," said <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/red-5-studios/">Red 5 Studios</a> CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mark-Kern/">Mark Kern</a>. <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-05-02-firefall-developer-consoles-i-believe-are-dead">In a candid interview with Eurogamer</a>, Kern ripped into both consoles and publisher-led models as relics on their way out the door.<br />
<br />
Kern said that the pressure that publishers put on studios are death to the industry, resulting in either "an indie game or... a massive AAA, IP-backed sequel with derivative gameplay." He thinks that there's no middle ground, and it disturbs him how many studios fire staff right after a game launches.<br />
<br />
Instead, the man behind <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/firefall/"><em>Firefall</em></a> believes that the free-to-play model puts the power back in the hands of the developers who then can concentrate on making games without having to kowtow to the publishers and distributors. "Look at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/riot-games/">Riot Games</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/league-of-legends/"><em>League of Legends</em></a>. They have more users than <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> does. That's crazy. And they don't have a publisher," Kern said.<br />
<br />
Citing the expense and sluggish reaction of console development, Kern also predicts that mobile and PC gaming are on their way to take over the field. "Something has to change," he concludes. "Consoles, I believe, are dead."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/03/red-5-studios-ceo-denounces-consoles-and-publishers/">Red 5 Studios CEO denounces consoles and publishers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 03 May 2012 09:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic's</em></a> moon (that's no moon...) <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/05/02/bioware-force-pushes-back-against-swtor-doubters/">is waxing, not waning</a>, says <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/daniel-erickson">Daniel Erickson</a>. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare's</a> lead designer on the project said that rumors of the game's demise are incredibly premature -- and outright wrong.<br />
<br />
Following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/10/star-wars-the-old-republics-patch-1-2-going-live-april-12th/">Update 1.2</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/17/hyperspace-beacon-outbreak/">the Rakghoul Outbreak live event</a>, Erickson reports that player activity in the game is increasing. He said that the studio is working hard to keep its customers happy: "The community has generally been excited about the direction the game is going as we finish up our last must-have quality of life features (group finder, etc) and can start concentrating full-time on creative things like the world events."<br />
<br />
Erickson said that the live event was kept a surprise to make it "feel organic" and not spoil everything in this age of instant internet sharing. He said that the team took a cue from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft's</em></a> Corrupted Blood plague that swept through the game in 2005; the devs tried to channel players' actions to fun rather than griefing.<br />

He says that the team discovered that <em>SWTOR </em>had a huge PvP community and has since "turned a huge amount of resources" to developing more content for that side of the game. BioWare's also shifted several team members over to creating more endgame content as the players chew through the stories at an increasing rate.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/02/swtor-on-the-rise-and-planning-more-pvp-endgame-content/">SWTOR on the rise and planning more PvP, endgame content</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 02 May 2012 09:00:00 EST. This week brings to an end my series of interview with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic-Studios/">Cryptic Studios</a> representatives. We conclude with the second half of my interview with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Christine-Thompson/">Christine Thompson</a>, lead writer for <em><a href="http://startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online</a></em>.<br />
<br />
Thompson confirmed that she essentially writes everything in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online">STO</a></em>. She admits that she gets some help, sometimes from developers who prefer to write their own work, but she says she writes 90% of everything in the game.<br />
<br />
The conversation picked back up with a focus on The Foundry, the user-generated content tool available to players in <em>STO</em>. I asked her if she had any direct advice for authors who use the Foundry to create missions and maps and social zones in the game. She said, "Authors "shouldn't be afraid to tell the stories they want to tell. That's one of the joys of The Foundry. And they should also know not every story is going to work for everybody. Some things people will love, and some things people won't. Use Of Bajor for example. I really enjoyed that episode. We took a chance and did something completely different with that episode, and I <em>liked </em>telling a Bajoran story. But for every person who liked that episode, there was somebody saying" -- and here she dropped her voice to a hoarse whisper -- "oh dear god, why can't I just <em>shoot something</em>?!"<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/30/captains-log-interview-with-star-trek-online-lead-writer-chris/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Interview with Star Trek Online lead writer Christine Thompson, part two</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/30/captains-log-interview-with-star-trek-online-lead-writer-chris/">Captain's Log: Interview with Star Trek Online lead writer Christine Thompson, part two</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 30 Apr 2012 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/26/no-regrets-sega-defends-phantasy-star-online-2s-f2p-model/"><img alt="Phantasy Star Online 2" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/phantasy.jpg" /></a></div>
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sega/">Sega</a> has "no regrets" about pursuing an aggressive free-to-play strategy for its upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Phantasy-Star-Online-2/">Phantasy Star Online 2</a>, according to series producer <a href="http://segaretro.org/Satoshi_Sakai">Satoshi Sakai</a>. Sakai said that the developers <a href="http://kotaku.com/5905281/phantasy-star-online-2-producer-talks-about-decision-to-make-game-free-to-play">were increasingly disturbed</a> by the trend of F2P models promoting a pay-to-win environment and has decided to make <em>PSO2 </em>more fair to all players.<br />
<br />
"By allowing a well made game like <em>PSO </em>to be accessible [to] more people, we felt that we had a chance to teach people that 'This is what online RPGs are supposed to be like,'" Sakai said. "There is nothing that requires payment that will take away from the intrinsic game experience if [it is] not purchased."<br />
<br />
The devs have limited <em>Phantasy Star Online 2's</em> microtransactions to areas that are less likely to see abuse from players willing to trade cash for an in-game advantage over others. These areas include player room upgrades, more storage space, and trading features.<br />
<br />
Sakai sees Sega as a pioneer in this regard: "I honestly think that Sega is the only maker that is willing to go this far. Even if we fail, if we can get people to say 'They were five years ahead of their time' then I'll have no regrets. I believe that there's meaning in the challenge itself."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/26/no-regrets-sega-defends-phantasy-star-online-2s-f2p-model/">'No regrets': Sega defends Phantasy Star Online 2's F2P model</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 26 Apr 2012 10:15:00 EST. Wondering whether -- or if -- the joint venture of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/syfy/">Syfy</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/trion-worlds/">Trion Worlds</a> will work in tandem with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/defiance/"><em>Defiance</em></a>? Then you may want to put aside a few minutes to watch the following video that attempts to explain how a TV show and an MMO will work together to create a blended experience for fans.<br />
<br />
"In the past it's always been very difficult to connect television shows, which are always evolving, with video games, which are static," Trion Worlds CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lars-buttler/">Lars Buttler</a> states, going on to say that Trion has cracked that code. "In our unique setup, we can do things other people have never dared to try before."<br />
<br />
Defiance the TV show and <em>Defiance </em>the MMO will, according to Buttler, "literally depend on each other and co-evolve."<br />
<br />
It may not be heavy on specifics, but it's a fascinating watch nonetheless. A <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/165808/World_of_Darkness_is_CCPs_bid_for_the_MMO_mainstream.php">new interview</a> at Gamasutra posits that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> is gunning for mainstream success with its upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-darkness"><em>World of Darkness</em></a> MMO. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> developer has cornered what's left of the hardcore sandbox market, so now it's looking to marry <em>EVE's</em> emergent gameplay with more familiar MMO staples. "The way to drag people in will be traditional themepark-style PvE play. Once players get into the setting, they'll see the appeal of the sandbox play," says <em>WoD</em> creative director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/reynir-hardarson">Reynir Hardarson</a>.<br />
<br />
Despite the concessions to mainstream accessibility, <em>EVE's</em> influence on <em>World of Darkness</em> will be more than superficial. "The live-action roleplayers of the Vampire the Masquerade tabletop game play this way," Hardarson explains. "It's really about politics and power plays."<br />
<br />
Why don't more MMO developers try their hand at sandbox mechanics? Hardarson says designing for emergent play is difficult because you can't test it. It's worth it, though, because MMOs that hand-hold and limit players to a linear path miss the point. "I'm not a five-year-old. If I want to go in the cave and I want to die, that's my problem," Hardarson says.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/24/world-of-darkness-creative-director-talks-design-and-the-mmo-mai/">World of Darkness creative director talks design and the MMO mainstream</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 24 Apr 2012 10:30:00 EST. Today <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Captains-Log/">Captain's Log</a> continues with the first of two installments of my interview with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Christine-Thompson">Christine Thompson</a>, <em><a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/">Star Trek Online's</a></em> lead writer at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic-Studios/">Cryptic Studios</a>!<br />
<br />
I began the discussion by asking Thompson about her background as a writer and journalist before she began working for Cryptic. She stated that she had held positions as a reporter, editor, page designer, and wire editor for 13 years, after which she found herself in a position of "either having to move up into management or having to find something else to do."<br />
<br />
Yet she spent a lot of her personal time playing MMOs, reading comic books and fantasy novels, and watching Star Trek. Since she had to find a new career anyway, she thought, "Why not find a career I actually enjoy?" That's when she began to look for writing positions in the gaming industry.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/23/captains-log-interview-with-star-trek-onlines-lead-writer-chr/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Interview with Star Trek Online lead writer Christine Thompson, part one</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/23/captains-log-interview-with-star-trek-onlines-lead-writer-chr/">Captain's Log: Interview with Star Trek Online lead writer Christine Thompson, part one</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 19:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/guild-wars-2">Guild Wars 2</a></em> fans are surely champing at the bit to get their hands on the game next week in the game's first public beta weekend, but you know what's cooler than taking part in <em>GW2</em>'s beta weekends? Doing so at <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet's</a> offices in Seattle, which is exactly what the folks at Eurogamer got to do just recently.<br />
	<br />
	Not only did they get the opportunity to sit down and play the <em>Guild Wars 2</em> beta with the team, but they also got the chance to chat with many of the key figures behind it all. Virtually every department of development is represented in the lengthy article, which includes interviews with head honcho Mike O'Brien, QA manager Mike Zadorojny, art director Daniel Dociu, lead content designer Colin Johanson, and many, many more. So if you're interested in a behind-the-scenes look at the studio behind what could be this year's biggest MMO, just head on over and check out the full piece.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/23/take-a-behind-the-scenes-tour-of-arenanets-totally-awesome-of/">Take a behind-the-scenes tour of ArenaNet's (totally awesome) offices</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 15:00:00 EST. Next in this series of interviews conducted on my visit to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic-Studios/">Cryptic Studios</a> in Los Gatos, California, last month is a chat with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Daniel-Stahl/">Daniel Stahl</a>, Executive Producer of <em><a href="http://startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online</a></em>.</div>
<br />
I first asked Stahl to give me an overview of his responsibilities as Executive Producer, as there are many people who are either new to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/STO/">STO</a></em> (or even to gaming overall) who may not have a clear understanding of his role entails.<br />
<br />
He stated his job is "similar to making movies." He has several direct reports, the first being the software person or the person responsible for the team of people who actually create the code for the game. The second is the Content Lead, who is responsible for new missions, new features, and anything to with player experience. Finally, the Quality Assurance team also reports to him.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/16/captains-log-interview-with-star-trek-onlines-executive-produ/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Interview with Star Trek Online's Executive Producer, Daniel Stahl</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/16/captains-log-interview-with-star-trek-onlines-executive-produ/">Captain's Log: Interview with Star Trek Online's Executive Producer, Daniel Stahl</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 16 Apr 2012 16:00:00 EST. There's been a big buzz for the latest update to <a href="http://champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a>. The entire game is undergoing a significant overhaul for the newest expansion, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/On-Alert/">On Alert</a>, which has <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/On_Alert">just gone live today</a>. The developers are adding in talent trees for player heroes as well as a dramatic overhaul of the way equipment works.<br />
<br />
We sat down with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Rob-Overmeyer/">Rob Overmeyer</a>, executive producer for <a href="http://massively.com/tag/champions-online"><em>Champions</em></a>, and asked him a few questions about the update and what it will mean for Millennium City's superhero population. Naturally, he had a lot to say!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/13/rob-overmeyer-discusses-new-changes-coming-for-champions-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Champions Online's On Alert launches, we interview Rob Overmeyer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/13/rob-overmeyer-discusses-new-changes-coming-for-champions-online/">Champions Online's On Alert launches, we interview Rob Overmeyer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 13 Apr 2012 15:00:00 EST. Rivera and I picked up the conversation and talked briefly about the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/14/why-i-play-star-trek-online/">Why I Play <em>STO</em></a> column that I wrote several weeks ago. I informed him that because of that column, I had received a few emails from brand-new MMO players who expressed frustration over the fact that as new free-to-play players, they weren't immediately allowed into the parts of the game that would give them access to the community, especially fleets, right off the bat.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/09/captains-log-interview-with-cryptics-al-rivera-part-three/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Interview with Cryptic's Al Rivera, part three</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/09/captains-log-interview-with-cryptics-al-rivera-part-three/">Captain's Log: Interview with Cryptic's Al Rivera, part three</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 09 Apr 2012 14:00:00 EST. Much like its predecessor, <a href="http://www.worldofwarplanes.com"><em>World of Warplanes</em></a> is not a game with an ambiguous title. This is a game about planes, and not the sort that flies cargo from one point on the globe to another. If flying around and getting into aerial dogfights sounds like an unappealing concept to you, well, you can pretty much just exit stage left when you hear the name.<br />
<br />
But the lack of subtlety in the name, however noteworthy, doesn't really say much about the game itself. Is it fun to play? Does it succeed in what it sets out to do? Really, is it just <a href="http://www.worldoftanks.com"><em>World of Tanks</em></a> up in the air? I can't speak to the last one, but I can say that it definitely delivers on its stated design goals. This is a game all about maximizing the rush of an aerial fight and striking a balance between crafting an in-depth flight simulation and providing accessibility to those new to the genre.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/world-of-warplanes/">World of Warplanes</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/world-of-warplanes/#4851802"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/wowpscreenussr05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/world-of-warplanes/#4851801"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/wowpscreenussr04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/world-of-warplanes/#4851800"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/wowpscreenussr03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/world-of-warplanes/#4851798"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/wowpscreenussr02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/world-of-warplanes/#4851797"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/wowpscreenussr01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/06/pax-east-2012-world-of-warplanes-impressions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX East 2012: World of Warplanes impressions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/06/pax-east-2012-world-of-warplanes-impressions/">PAX East 2012: World of Warplanes impressions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 06 Apr 2012 17:00:00 EST. Information is like gold 'round these parts, and I've been out prospecting, sifting, and searching in the hopes of at least finding a few flakes if not hitting pay dirt. But even with <em><a href="http://na.aiononline.com/">Aion</a> </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Ascension/">Ascension</a> just around the corner, finding many nuggets of information on the new BlackCloud Marketplace hasn't panned out. Until now. Eureka!<br />
<br />
Welcome to the Massively Gold Rush. OK, so maybe a "rush" is a bit of an overstatement, but I have discovered a few golden nuggets about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion's</em></a> renovated cash shop and impending <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/20/wings-over-atreia-ode-to-3-0/">3.0</a> expansion. I had the chance to catch up with Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/adam-christensen/">Adam Christensen</a> and learn a bit more about what Daevas will find in the BlackCloud Marketplace as well as get some details about various new upcoming features like housing, mounts, and the level 60 Daevanion armor.<br />
<br />
And with the BlackCloud Marketplace finally opening its doors, Daevas can check out the selection for themselves and pre-purchase items to be delivered at <em>Ascension's</em> Launch.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/05/wings-over-atreia-an-interview-sheds-light-on-the-new-blackclou/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wings Over Atreia: An interview sheds light on the new BlackCloud</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/05/wings-over-atreia-an-interview-sheds-light-on-the-new-blackclou/">Wings Over Atreia: An interview sheds light on the new BlackCloud</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 05 Apr 2012 09:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> has been pretty quiet on the subject of microtransactions since last summer's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/monoclegate">monoclegate</a> and the ensuing Jita protests. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> creative director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/torfi-frans-olafsson">Torfi Frans Olafsson</a> recently spoke up about the trendy new business model, and while he acknowledged that it is popular, he also said that CCP is "very reluctant to do that in <em>EVE</em> because it's so established. It's like changing the DNA of a living organism after it's born. That didn't work in Blade Runner," he tells <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/04/02/eve-online-creative-director-on-microtransactions-i-personally-think-we-shouldnt-be-doing-it-in-the-near-future/">PC Gamer</a>.<br />
<br />
Olafsson also repeats the anti-pay-to-win mantra that comes standard in just about every developer interview these days. He says that CCP will sell cosmetic items in <em>EVE</em>, including makeovers for your avatar, ship, and starbase. Given the fact that players will be purchasing weapons and gear in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a> (which will interface directly with <em>EVE's</em> pre-existing economy), we've no doubt it will be interesting to see how CCP maintains that delicate balance.<br />
<br />
"I think we have to be very careful in introducing such mechanics into <em>EVE</em>. And I personally think that we shouldn't be doing it in the near future," Olafsson says, "because it's such a vulnerable little flower in a vulnerable little ecosystem. You make minor changes to an ecosystem and you can introduce hostile things and the whole system breaks down."<br />
<br />

	Today <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Captain-s-Log/">Captain's Log</a> continues with part two of my interview with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Al-Rivera/">Al Rivera</a>, <em><a href="http://startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online's</a></em> Lead Designer at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic-Studios/">Cryptic Studios</a>.</div>
<br />
Last week I received a bit of feedback regarding the state of Rivera's desk. I withheld taking pictures of the interior of the office space for fear of inadvertently capturing information that I wasn't free to share. Happily, though, Rivera himself decided to tweet a few <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/CaptainGeko/status/184850833538678784/photo/1">photos of the ships</a> and Trek paraphernalia that graced our visit to his office. Yes, it also included a picture of what I had described in my last column as a "funky purple monster." Apparently my comic book naivet&eacute; has kept me from recognizing what Rivera informed me is <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/CaptainGeko/status/184851269851160576/photo/1">The Maxx</a>.<br />
<br />
Sorry, but it will always be that funky purple monster to me.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/02/captains-log-interview-with-cryptics-al-rivera-part-two/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Interview with Cryptic's Al Rivera, part two</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/02/captains-log-interview-with-cryptics-al-rivera-part-two/">Captain's Log: Interview with Cryptic's Al Rivera, part two</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 02 Apr 2012 11:00:00 EST. Many moons ago when the air just started to cool from summer's heat (aka, last September), <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/some-assembly-required/">Some Assembly Required</a> had the opportunity to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/16/some-assembly-required-diving-into-details-of-origins-of-malu/">talk shop</a> with a new outfit that is developing a promising new sandbox MMORPG, <a href="http://www.originsmmo.com/"><em>Origins of </em></a><a href="http://www.originsmmo.com/"><em>Malu</em></a>. And you know me: Sandbox is the magic word! As skeptical as I knew I should be, I still came away from that interview with renewed hope that a game with some of the features for player-generated content could exist again.<br />
<br />
Back then, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/burning-dog-media">Burning Dog Media</a> made the bold statement that it would absolutely release its flagship game in 2012, with a target of early 2012 to boot. But as the first quarter of the year quickly drew to a close with scant information available, it became pretty clear the game is still a ways off. In the realm of games, no news is not necessarily good news... and we definitely hit a drought in news.<br />
<br />
Now that drought has ended.
