When it's time to sit down and play an MMO, very few of us do so in total silence. Even neglecting the occasional burst of profanity at the game, there's usually a wide selection of game audio to be heard, ranging from environmental noises like rustling leaves to simple and evocative music that stays with you even if you leave the game behind. But for all the care put into it, the in-game music can eventually get boring to many players.

Maybe you still have the game soundtrack turned on, and you occasionally just stop and listen to one of your favorite melodies. Perhaps you've moved on to listening to a favorite playlist on iTunes or Pandora while you play, or you might turn off the sound altogether to focus on the business of voice chat. There's even a chance you've decided to be charmingly meta and listen to another game's soundtrack altogether. What are you listening to while you play your favorite game?

Internet radio is far from being a new concept, nor is internet radio specifically for gamers. IGG.com is taking it a step farther, though. 2029 Online, their free-to-play sci-fi MMO will soon feature an in-game radio station.

"The DJs will offer up a diverse selection of music, giving players a unique soundtrack every time they log in. The station will also be used to promote in-game events, broadcast live PvP matches, deliver breaking international news, offer up the juiciest celebrity gossip and provide up-to-the-minute pop culture updates. Players can even participate in a talk back program that gives them a chance to share their thoughts with the entire game world."

The team at 2029 Online will release the radio station soon, along with a new expansion. It will stream live on the server-side, requiring no additional installs by the players. Keep an eye on the official site for more information on the release date!

One of the more unique aspects of the EVE Online experience since its beta days is the player-run EVE Radio, an internet radio station which broadcasts 24/7. Over the past few years EVE Radio has catered to a dedicated fan base numbering in the thousands, streaming to between 150 and 500 simultaneous users at any given time. Although they've been steadily growing, there are still a number of EVE Online players who aren't aware of EVE Radio. To that end, the people over at EVE Radio are working to increase their visibility in preparation for a busy 2009.

They're making a big push to reach out to new listeners through a contest running from December 15-21, announced on the EVE Online forums. What are they giving away? For starters -- 20 x 500 million ISK instant prizes, 10 x 60-day EVE Time Codes, and 1 Complete Faction Battleship Model set (that's a $500 value!).
