<em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/eve-spotlight">EVE Spotlight</a> is a new bi-weekly feature in which we interview prominent members of </em><a href="http://www.eve-online.com">EVE Online</a><em>'s player community or development team. Twice each month, we'll be shining the spotlight on a player or developer who has a significant impact on </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/">EVE</a><em> to highlight the efforts of </em>EVE<em>'s most influential people.</em><br />
<br />
It's an inherent part of MMO development that certain employees must take on a very visible role in the game's online community. This is especially true in <em>EVE Online</em> as developers are encouraged to communicate with players through the forum and <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp">write detailed devblogs</a> on what they're working on. In that sense, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-guard/">GM Guard</a> needs very little introduction. Along with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gm-grimmi/">GM Grimmi</a> and others, Guard has been a very public face for GMs in the community for as long as I can remember. While Guard has made huge contributions to <em>EVE</em> behind the scenes as a lead GM, he's probably most well-known for his role in <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ccp">CCP's</a> internal band <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/permaband/">Permaband</a>. He has now moved on from the GM team to become <em>EVE</em>'s new Community Developer.<br />
<br />
The role of GMs in any MMO is pivotal, and yet they so often come under fire from players who don't get the response they're hoping for or who have to wait too long for an answer. Many <em>EVE</em> players are also unaware of the procedures for escalating petitions, reporting exploits, contacting internal affairs or other important activities. In this <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eve-spotlight/">EVE Spotlight</a>, we got together with former Lead GM Guard to pick his brains on these topics, find out a little about CCP's support division, and ask about Permaband's next song.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/29/eve-spotlight-an-interview-with-gm-guard/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Spotlight: An interview with GM Guard</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/29/eve-spotlight-an-interview-with-gm-guard/">EVE Spotlight: An interview with GM Guard</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 29 Apr 2011 18:00:00 EST. The Volunteer Manager for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-ginger">CCP Ginger</a>, explained the situation earlier today: <em>"Last weekend external resources related to the Interstellar Services Department (<a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Volunteer_program">ISD</a>), EVE's volunteer program, were compromised which led to the theft of some volunteer program related data but also information about specific volunteers. As a result, we are being extra careful here, as this first and foremost pertains to the volunteer program and has no effect on our EVE Online operations or any customer data whatsoever." </em><br /><br />CCP Ginger stressed that information stolen came from <em>"areas operated outside of CCP's infrastructure and is therefore not related to anyone's EVE player account data. Player billing information, personal information, and character/game information all remain completely secure and unaffected, as well as CCP corporate pathways and e-mail, Tranquility, databases, etc." </em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/23/eve-onlines-volunteer-program-compromised/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online's volunteer program compromised</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/23/eve-onlines-volunteer-program-compromised/">EVE Online's volunteer program compromised</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 Sep 2009 18:00:00 EST. Certain player-owned starbases in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> were producing valuable, high-end materials that they shouldn't have been. Once a group of players picked up on this, they exploited the game on a massive scale, resulting in trillions of ISK (Interstellar Kredits, the game's virtual currency) that never should have existed being injected into the game. To date, this is the largest economic manipulation (via an exploit) ever revealed in <em>EVE Online</em>. <br /><br />The starbase exploit was the first of several <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/05/further-developments-in-eves-grand-theft-alliance-drama/">player-triggered drama bombs</a> that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/01/eve-pvp-tournament-assassination-machiavellian-or-bad-form/">hit the game in recent weeks</a>, and resulted in a substantial amount of (in-game) market turmoil and player outcry over the issue. The game's subscribers wanted openness on the matter from <em>EVE</em>'s developer, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a>, and they've certainly got that as of today. CCP Games posted the results of the exploit investigation, and the caveat <em>"be careful what you wish for"</em> may apply here, given the depth and complexity of the findings conveyed to the playerbase in today's dev blog, "<a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=626">War Makes Thieves and Peace Hangs Them</a>."<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/10/ccp-games-releases-findings-on-eve-starbase-exploit-investigatio/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CCP Games releases findings on EVE starbase exploit investigation</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/10/ccp-games-releases-findings-on-eve-starbase-exploit-investigatio/">CCP Games releases findings on EVE starbase exploit investigation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 10 Feb 2009 17:30:00 EST. The game boasts a dynamic virtual economy which is in many ways integral to the game itself. (Inter Stellar Kredits, or ISK, is the currency upon which <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s economy is based.) When <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/rumored-four-year-multi-trillion-isk-exploit-in-eve-online/">rumor broke of a multi-trillion ISK exploit</a> in the game, it raised a few eyebrows. However, when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> themselves confirmed it and announced they would launch <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/14/an-update-on-the-eve-online-starbase-exploit/">an investigation into the matter</a>, it became more serious, as reflected by the economic impact on the market in the game. (Remember kids, internet spaceships <em>are</em> serious business... <em>EVE</em> tends to have more drama than the average massively multiplayer online game.)<br /><br /><a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> provided an update on the investigation today, stating that 178 starbases were discovered exploiting the issue and have been destroyed. This is the first time they've been willing or able to put a solid number on how extensive the exploit was, in terms of the scope of the operation. CCP stated: <em>"We have also banned all those we have found directly involved and all accounts we have found to be connected to those players. The investigation is still under way and will take a while to conclude."</em> Also part of the investigation is the Internal Affairs aspect, which some players have been following. CCP Games reports that they haven't found links between any of their own staff (or the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/council-of-stellar-management ">Council of Stellar Management</a>, for that matter) and the starbase exploit. See the <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/news.asp?a=single&amp;nid=2608&amp;tid=1">official announcement from the <em>EVE developers</em></a> for more details on how the investigation is progressing.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/178-starbases-involved-in-eve-onlines-multi-trillion-isk-exploi/">178 starbases involved in EVE Online's multi-trillion ISK exploit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 19 Dec 2008 17:30:00 EST. Unlike most other MMO titles where you choose a server to play on with your friends, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> doesn't make you choose. Although the server cluster is made up of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/28/eve-evolved-eve-onlines-server-model/">hundreds of IBM blade servers</a>, from a player's perspective, it's all one galaxy with over 5000 solar systems. This is good for a 'sandbox' game, where players are allowed to do whatever they feel like within the rules of that place. It creates a huge galaxy where everyone can potentially interact... or kill each other. But it comes with a rather substantial drawback at times: lag. <br /><br />This 'single server' approach makes <em>EVE Online</em> a game where players hope to have large-scale fleet battles not unlike all those <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/sci-fi">sci-fi shows and films</a> we grew up with. But the harsh reality is that there are limitations of server technology that hinder large scale conflicts. Bring a few hundred of your friends to a fleet battle in <em>EVE</em> and you might not be fighting so much as watching a slide show. Definitely not the most fun to be had in the game.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/05/making-fleet-battle-reservations-in-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Making fleet battle reservations in EVE Online?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/05/making-fleet-battle-reservations-in-eve-online/">Making fleet battle reservations in EVE Online?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 05 Dec 2008 12:00:00 EST.
