<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/inferno"><em>Inferno</em></a> is right around the corner, with the Escalation to <em>Inferno</em> patch due to hit in two days on Tuesday, April 24th. The patch prepares <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> for the coming PvP apocalypse with titan balance tweaks, a new interactive status effect bar, and <a href="http://community.eveonline.com/en/inferno/features/">two very important changes to the NPC drop tables</a>: Manufacturable tech 1 modules will be removed from NPC drop tables, and Rogue Drone NPCs will have their mineral drops replaced with ISK bounties. These are changes players have been suggesting for years, and together they have the potential to bring back mining as one of the most profitable professions in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>.<br />
<br />
If someone asked you where all the minerals come from to build the thousands of ships destroyed in <em>EVE</em> on a daily basis, you might say that you assume most of it comes from mined ore. Mining was originally the biggest source of minerals in the game and one of the most profitable professions, but over the years, that's changed. When level 4 missions added an infinite source of battleship-sized NPCs to high-security space, mission-running quickly overtook mining as the most profitable profession, and bizarrely, as a very good source of minerals. When the drone regions were later released, ratting there also became a huge mineral faucet far in excess of that produced through mining.<br />
<br />
In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a>, I look at the problems faced by mining as a source of minerals and speculate on what will happen to mining as a profession when the <em>Inferno</em> expansion hits.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/22/eve-evolved-mining-returns-with-inferno/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Mining returns with Inferno</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/22/eve-evolved-mining-returns-with-inferno/">EVE Evolved: Mining returns with Inferno</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 22 Apr 2012 18:00:00 EST. Of all the MMOs on the market today, <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> has perhaps one of the steepest learning curves. This is something the game's developer, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games/">CCP Games</a>, has been trying to tackle through improved tutorials and updates to the new player experience. While CCP makes progress on that front, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> player community has made its own efforts in helping new players by producing helpful guides and tools. Last year, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/29/eve-evolved-the-industrial-sized-knowledgebase/"><em>EVE</em> players Laci and Mermalior released the impressive Industrial-Sized Knowledgebase guide</a>, an exhaustive guide to practically everything in <em>EVE</em>. The guide was translated from its popular Hungarian version and released online for free as a PDF download.<br />
<br />
Good news came last month when the publishers of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/31/eon-magazine-issue-22-tackles-incarna-surviving-the-eve-fanfest/">EON magazine</a> announced <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/06/eve-online-industrial-sized-knowedgebase-to-be-released-in-print/">that they were teaming up with Laci and Mermalior</a> to produce an updated print version of the guide. The <a href="http://eonmagazine.net/2011/02/01/its-here-by-this-afternoon/">first part of that work is now complete</a>, with the MMM Publishing team having updated the guide with information from the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/incursion/"><em>Incursion</em></a> expansion and given it a huge graphical overhaul. The guide has now been laid out with MMM's signature <em>EVE</em> style, and the PDF now has a very professional navigation system. As promised, the updated guide <a href="http://www.isktheguide.com/">is available completely for free as a PDF download</a>. A printed version will be available at some point in the future, which will be sold on the <em>EVE</em> store.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/02/eves-industrial-sized-knowledgebase-guide-gets-a-makeover/">EVE's Industrial Sized Knowledgebase guide gets a makeover</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 02 Feb 2011 19:00:00 EST. Following the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/24/eve-online-server-move-delayed-by-database-issues/">unscheduled extended downtime</a> caused by the recent <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> server move, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games/"><em>CCP Games</em></a> has promised to reimburse players for the lost play time with <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/news.asp?a=single&amp;nid=3963&amp;tid=1">a small pool of additional skill-points</a> that they can distribute any way they like. CCP went on to hint that they'd been working on a different gift for all players, a cryptic remark that had players both excited and bewildered. In a new devblog, CCP Zinfandel <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=772">outlined exactly what this gift will be</a> and how players can claim it.<br />
<br />
To be released on the 29th of June, the Primae joins the ranks of <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Apotheosis">the Apotheosis</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/15/eve-online-giving-players-free-holiday-gift-the-zephyr/">Zephyr</a> as another one-time gift ship delivered to all <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> players. Supplied free of charge by NPC industrial corporation Outer Ring Excavations, the Primae is a ship designed to help in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/planetary-interaction/">planetary industry</a>. This lightweight hauler features a low signature radius and significant hit-point buffer, making it a more defensible ship with which to haul materials between planets. To ensure it doesn't displace its paper-thin industrial cousins in the general hauling scene, the majority of the ship's cargo space is reserved for planetary equipment and processed materials. Two special bays able to hold only those materials ensure that the ship remains a tool for the planetary industrialists among us. For more details on the Primae and how to claim it after June 29th, read <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=772">the latest <em>EVE</em> devblog</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/25/all-eve-players-to-receive-free-primae-planetary-industry-ship/">All EVE players to receive free Primae planetary industry ship</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 Jun 2010 12:30:00 EST. When new <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> players give up and quit the game, their reasons are usually very similar. A <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/22/eve-evolved-how-do-you-handle-burnout/">lack of drive to play the game is common</a>, with players logging in only to change skills. Similarly, people complain that <a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/208-Eve-Online">the game is boring</a> and isn't really taking them anywhere. Most of these reasons boil down to a basic lack of motivation, purpose and goals. As a sandbox game, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> doesn't really lead the player anywhere after the tutorials and it can be easy to get lost. This is where the <em>EVE</em> community steps in by providing a whole host of player-run corporations to help pilots find their way in <em>EVE</em>.<br />
<br />
As a very social game, I don't think <em>EVE</em> truly takes off <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/02/eve-evolved-finding-the-perfect-corporation-in-five-easy-steps/">until you get into a good corporation</a>. In addition to help and advice, a good corp with some solid corporate goals will offer players a sense of purpose and direction that can be hard to find on your own. The opportunity to be a part of something bigger than yourself and accomplish goals you could never hope to on your own can be a great motivator. Whether your corporation's goal is to build a freighter from scratch, run a massive industrial complex, engage in PvP or even lay claim to a system, it stands a much better chance of being achieved <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/11/eve-evolved-running-your-own-corporation/">when pilots cooperate</a>.<br />
<br />
In this opinion piece, I show how the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts as I look at a few of the goals corporations commonly work toward as a team.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/07/eve-evolved-the-importance-of-corporate-goals/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: The importance of corporate goals</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/07/eve-evolved-the-importance-of-corporate-goals/">EVE Evolved: The importance of corporate goals</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 07 Mar 2010 18:00:00 EST. Premium Graphics as of next month's expansion will complete CCP's across-the-board overhaul of the game's look. Among those numerous graphical enhancements coming to <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE</em> <em>Online</em></a> in the forthcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/apocrypha"><em>Apocrypha</em> expansion</a> is something that will come as good news to players who enjoy mining: new asteroid belts. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online">EVE</a> </em>developer CCP VanishingPoint writes in his "Miners Rejoice!" dev blog, <em>"The asteroids are getting a facelift. Better than that actually, the asteroids are now going to communicate their value through brilliant graphical treatments." </em><br /><br />His blog explains how <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_Rocks_1964-1971">Team Hot Rocks</a> created the new asteroid and ice belts for <em>Apocrypha</em>. The days of seeing round, floating rocks in identical belt after belt are nearly over. The new asteroids will have unique looks for each type of ore they're comprised of. In addition, they'll be in the form of shards with many different meshes, and will typically appear to be shattered fragments of larger objects. If you're an industry-type and spend a fair amount of your <em>EVE</em> time mining, you'll definitely want to see <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=639">CCP VanishingPoint's dev blog "Miners Rejoice!"</a> and its explanation of what you'll get on <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/apocrypha/index.html">March 10th in the <em>Apocrypha</em> expansion</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/04/major-graphics-overhaul-of-eves-asteroid-belts-in-apocrypha-exp/">Major graphics overhaul of EVE's asteroid belts in Apocrypha expansion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 04 Mar 2009 20:00:00 EST. <div align="center"><em>Behold, the Orca! </em><br /></div>
<br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> developer CCP Chronotis unveiled the much-rumored Orca ship in <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> today, something industry-types have been looking forward to for a very long time. Chronotis said, <em>"The development of the Orca has been unusual to say the least. With the introduction of the Rorqual last year <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/oveur">Oveur</a> immediately pointed out the remaining glaring gap in the industrial ship line and commanded us to fill it."</em> The end result is a 'sub-capital logistical ship with a mining command focus'. <br /><br />Read on below for a brief FAQ drawn from CCP Chronotis' dev blog as well as his commentary on the forums, which clarifies more about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE's</span></a> newest ship, the Orca.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/23/eve-onlines-rumored-orca-ship-unveiled/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online's rumored 'Orca' ship unveiled</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/23/eve-onlines-rumored-orca-ship-unveiled/">EVE Online's rumored 'Orca' ship unveiled</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 23 Oct 2008 16:30:00 EST. Corporations will be able to set their products apart from the rest by building trust in their goods through customizable storefronts. The backbone of EVE's vibrant economy, industrial ships are being rebalanced and optimized to better suit the needs of haulers and industrialists-including the latest addition to the fleet, a massive capital industrial ship dubbed the Orca. A <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/13/certificates-and-medals-coming-to-eve-online/">new certificate system</a> will give a quick and verifiable means to discern a pilot's skill level in trading, gunnery or countless other professions, providing plenty of bragging rights. Meanwhile, the introduction of a medal system allows corporations to distinguish their most valued pilots and honor them for their achievements."</em><br /><br /><em>Quantum Rise</em> is being released in stages, some of which we've already seen and experienced, such as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/02/eve-server-upgrades-open-possibilities-for-1000-player-combat/">Stackless IO and EVE64.</a> But other aspects of the expansion will include <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/14/changes-to-combat-and-contracts-in-eve-confirmed-by-devs/">weapon linking, </a>continuations of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/trinity"><em>Trinity</em> graphics update,</a> and other as-yet unannounced features. It's become standard for the <a href="http://www.mastheadstudios.com">Masthead</a> newsletters to profile members of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a> team. This time it's Composer Pavel Benov who's featured. He talks about how he drew upon his punk and hardcore roots to create <em>Earthrise's</em> soundtrack, which will be a fusion of experimental ambient and industrial. <br /><br />There are also some highlights of the previous month's coverage of the post-apocalyptic title. But most of the revelations come through their Community Manager, Moll, who touches upon where <em>Earthrise</em> is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/earthrise-newsletter-sheds-more-light-on-the-road-to-beta/">in terms of beta testing.</a> In addition, 'Issue IV' of the <em>Earthrise</em> newsletter has more concept art from the Eastern Gardens Creatures, showing off the npc spawns that will be devouring players when the game goes into beta, which Moll says will be later this year.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/17/earthrise-newsletter-updates-fans-on-titles-progress/">Earthrise newsletter updates fans on title's progress</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 17 Aug 2008 10:00:00 EST.
