In tonight's ultra-short <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-MMO-Report/">MMO Report</a>, Casey complains that <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Phantasy-Star-Online-2/">Phantasy Star Online 2</a></em> will launch for mobile platforms ahead of PC, drools all over the integration of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DUST-514/">DUST 514</a></em> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EVE-Online/">EVE Online</a></em>, maintains a weirdly neutral face while discussing <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Anarchy-Online/">Anarchy Online's</a></em> graphical overhaul, and regales us with an explanation of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Secret-World/">The Secret World's</a></em> class-less game mechanics. He ends on a high note with a peek into Uncle Casey's mailbag and some mockery of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Warcraft/">World of Warcraft</a></em> players' forum campaign to undo the latest round of Warlock nerfs. No one's ever done <em>that</em> before.<br />

All this and some tips on Icelandic cuisine in the video beyond the cut!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/29/the-mmo-report-horsesteak-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The MMO Report: Horsesteak edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/29/the-mmo-report-horsesteak-edition/">The MMO Report: Horsesteak edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 29 Mar 2012 22:00:00 EST. At the end of March, it's time for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EVE-Online/">EVE Online</a></em> players the world over to once again come together in their shared love of backstabbing, corporate management, and monocles. Yes, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/EVE-Fanfest/"><em>EVE</em> Fanfest</a> is approaching swiftly, and if you're planning to head over to Iceland for the event, now is probably the time to start making some plans about how to get there. Fortunately, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CCP-Games/">CCP Games</a> has made <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/news.asp?a=single&amp;nid=4856&amp;tid=1">some accommodations for players</a> so that getting to the event and in the door can be a wee bit easier.<br />
<br />
Tickets to the event can be purchase from the game's account management page, with a special early bird discount available through the end of January and bulk discounts on groups of 5-10 tickets. You can also book Fanfest activities through the same purchase page, allowing you to save time when you actually get on the ground. There are also deals available for players flying in via Icelandair, making it <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/news.asp?a=single&amp;nid=4856&amp;tid=1">easier than ever to get to the convention</a> -- a welcome change for the legions of fans not already based there.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/06/ccp-lays-out-the-path-to-attend-the-eve-fanfest/">CCP lays out the path to attend the EVE Fanfest</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 06 Jan 2012 18:00:00 EST. It's an exciting time to be an <em><a href="http://www.eve-online.com">EVE Online</a></em> capsuleer, especially if you have the ability to make it to Iceland or are <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/19/schedule-posted-for-the-eve-fanfest-livestream/">checking out the livestreams</a>. For the rest of us desk-bound mortals who weren't able to hop across the pond to make it to <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/eve-fanfest">Fanfest 2011</a>, well... there's always next year! Even now, pilots are partying down with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CCP/">CCP</a> development team and talking all things internet spaceships while others are networking. We'd bet there's probably even a bit of setup for an in-game scam or two going on as well. We <em>are</em> talking about <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EVE-Online/">EVE Online</a>,</em> after all.<br />
<br />
Thankfully, we here at Massively have sent two of our own intrepid adventurers to get into the thick of the action: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/shawn-schuster/">Shawn Schuster</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/brendan-drain/">Brendan Drain</a>. These two brave souls are facing the crowds at the top of the world to catch all the myriad events this weekend and have sent us some <strike>Quafe t-shirts</strike> field reports of all the action going on at Fanfest 2011. First up, it's a tasty overview of this year's opening keynote. So grab your drink of choice and join us after the break for more!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/25/eve-fanfest-2011-keynote-from-the-top-of-the-world/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online Fanfest 2011: Keynote from the top of the world</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/25/eve-fanfest-2011-keynote-from-the-top-of-the-world/">EVE Online Fanfest 2011: Keynote from the top of the world</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 19:30:00 EST. The party at the top of the world approaches, and some very excited (and lucky) <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> players are gearing up to head for Iceland to see the company, people, and land from which their favorite game originates. It's a pilgrimage many pilots look forward to enjoying each year. Whether it's hot PvP action, panels and roundtable discussions, or just the idea of getting to go pub crawling with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CCP/">CCP</a> devs in an incredibly picturesque location, there's a ton for the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EVE-Online/">EVE Online</a></em> devotee to look forward to. For the non-<em>EVE</em> partners who go along, the <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/en/events/sisters.aspx">Sisters of EVE tour</a> similarly offers tons of interesting things to do.<br />
<br />
As a lead-up to this year's extravaganza of all things <em>EVE</em>, CCP's CEO, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Hilmar-Veigar-Petursson/">Hilmar Veigar P&eacute;tursson</a> (aka <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CCP-Hellmar/">CCP Hellmar</a>), has taken the time to pen a very interesting open letter to all who are attending or thinking of attending. His pride and passion for the game are nearly contagious. So if you're eager for more information on the upcoming Fanfest -- or are just killing time until you get to attend -- be sure to head over to the <em>EVE Online</em> site and <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=863">check out P&eacute;tursson's open letter</a> to the community.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/28/ccps-ceo-talks-about-upcoming-eve-fanfest/">CCP's CEO talks about upcoming EVE Fanfest</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 28 Feb 2011 10:00:00 EST. <span style="float: right; margin-left: 10px; margin-top: 6px;"><a href="http://twitter.com/share" data-via="massively" data-count="vertical" class="twitter-share-button">Tweet</a> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js"></script> </span>It is undeniable that <a href="http://play.eveonline.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is unique among MMORPGs in many ways. One of these is its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CouncilofStellarManagement/">Council of Stellar Management</a>, an elected committee of nine players who play an active role in the development of the game, bringing player concerns and proposals for the future direction of the game directly to <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> at biannual summits in Iceland. Until this year, the perception of the CSM among players was that the Council is a marketing tool that does not fulfill its stated role of representing the playerbase. But in June, all of that changed.<br />
<br />
This term of the CSM brought in some major changes to the way the Council is organised, specifically with the removal of term limits (previously delegates could only serve two terms on the CSM) and the extension of terms from six months to a year. In addition to this, the CSM has been given "stakeholder" status within CCP. This means that the Council members have an equal say in the planning of future development along with the internal teams at CCP. This has allowed the fifth CSM to have a significant influence on the future development of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EVE-Online/">EVE</a></em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/12/eve-onlines-csm-from-june-to-december/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>An inside look at EVE Online's CSM: From June to December</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/12/eve-onlines-csm-from-june-to-december/">An inside look at EVE Online's CSM: From June to December</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 12 Jan 2011 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a>, producer of sci-fi MMO <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, had a great start to this year. By January 1st 2010, the number of active <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> subscriptions rose above the 320,000 mark. This magic number meant there were more <em>EVE</em> subscriptions than there are citizens of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games/">CCP</a>'s home country of Iceland. In celebration of this milestone, CCP felt it important to share with the world the inspiration that lead them to where they are today.<br />
<br />
As part of Iceland's "<a href="http://www.inspiredbyiceland.com">Inspired by Iceland</a>" campaign, CCP has <a href="http://vimeo.com/12231666">put together a video</a> talking about how the development of <em>EVE</em> has been inspired by their home country. In the video, CCP employees talk about <em>EVE Online</em> being developed with a strong sense of community in mind, something that's inherently important to the Icelandic people. They go on to talk about how Iceland has inspired the game's art direction, from the vast lack of scale present in Icelandic landscape to the dark nature of the country.<br />
<br />
If you've ever been interested in Iceland, skip past the cut to watch this insightful look into what inspires the folks at CCP Games.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/14/ccp-games-contributes-to-inspired-by-iceland-video-campaign/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CCP Games contributes to "Inspired by Iceland" video campaign</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/14/ccp-games-contributes-to-inspired-by-iceland-video-campaign/">CCP Games contributes to "Inspired by Iceland" video campaign</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 14 Jun 2010 21:00:00 EST. When Iceland isn't <a href="http://content.usatoday.com/communities/sciencefair/post/2010/05/european-airspace-reopens-eyjafjallajokull-volcano-continues-to-erupt/1">belching volcanic ash</a> that brings sky travel to its knees, it's kicking butt in the MMO world. <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is widely seen as one of the greatest MMO success stories -- a small yet incredibly complex title from a small-fry studio (CCP) that's seen steady growth over the years instead of the typical rise, crest and fall of most other titles.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/4489/the_icelandic_model_of_mmo_.php">In a recent chat with Gamasutra</a>, Alexander "The Mittani" Gianturco <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/25/eve-online-spymaster-the-mittani-to-present-at-gdc-2010/">followed up his talk at GDC 2010</a> by outlining just why CCP's business model may be the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosetta_Stone">Rosetta Stone</a> for future games to follow. According to Gianturco, the crash-and-burn of many MMOs is due to the insistence that their games stick to the "Big Content" model (&agrave; la<em> <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/index.xml">World of Warcraft</a></em>), which requires a huge amount of resources and time before launch. He says that this is "near suicidal" for most studios to pursue.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/20/icelandic-model-is-ideal-for-small-mmo-start-ups-says-alexand/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>"Icelandic Model" is ideal for small MMO start-ups, says Alexander Gianturco</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/20/icelandic-model-is-ideal-for-small-mmo-start-ups-says-alexand/">"Icelandic Model" is ideal for small MMO start-ups, says Alexander Gianturco</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 20 May 2010 09:00:00 EST. Icelandic development studio <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games/"><em>CCP Games</em></a> is certainly no stranger to awards. Their massively successful sci-fi MMO <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> has drawn in <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/community/awards_reviews.asp">countless awards over the years</a>, from PC Gamer's "2009 MMO of the year" to MMORPG.com's "Most improved game" award back in 2007 and more. The company themselves have received their share of awards for business success, being named in the Technology Association of Georgia's "Top 10 innovative companies" award in 2009 and listed as one of the "Most successful game studios" of 2009 by Develop100.<br />
<br />
Last week, <a href="http://www.grapevine.is/Home/ReadArticle/CCP-Receives-Export-Award"><em>CCP</em> added another notch in their belt</a> when the Icelandic government awarded them the 2010 "President of Iceland's Export Award". The award usually goes to the company that generates the greatest revenue through export, with consideration given to how well the company are appealing to new markets. Past recipients of the award have included airlines, <a href="http://news.icex.is/newsservice/MMIcexNSWeb.dll/newspage?language=IS&amp;pagetype=symbolnewslist&amp;primarylanguagecode=EN&amp;newsnumber=16508">pharmaceutical suppliers</a>, <a href="http://www.vaki.is/News/FishFarming/More/exportaward2009tovaki">fisheries</a> and even independent artists. As almost all of <em>CCP</em>'s income comes from overseas, they have remained almost entirely isolated from the Icelandic financial crisis. In recognition of the company's growth and success with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> in the face of economic turmoil, the award was presented to <em>CCP</em> on April 20th.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/26/ccp-games-win-icelandic-export-award/">CCP Games win Icelandic export award</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 26 Apr 2010 12:00:00 EST. The tower of light, dedicated to the late John Lennon, consists of a geothermally powered base, and shines its light as much as four kilometres into the sky. Around the base are the words <em>imagine peace</em> in 24 languages.</p>
<p>This third <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life"><em>Second Life</em></a> </em>recreation of the light tower was commissioned by Yoko Ono, artist, peace-activist, musician and Lennon's widow.</p>
<p>After the lighting ceremony for the physical tower in Iceland, Ono will be unveiling this <em>Second Life</em> version on <a href="http://slurl.com/secondlife/Imagine%20Peace%20Tower/128/128/2">Imagine Peace Island</a> (SLURL) at 3:30PM US Pacific time today.</p>
<p>The tower will illuminate 15 minutes after sunset each <em>Second Life</em> day, and remain lit until the next <em>Second Life</em> dawn. Sunset on the island takes place at 3:30, 6:30 and 10:30 (both AM and PM) US Pacific time each day.</p>

And <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> focuses in even more on numbers, where players worry not only about the amount of damage their ship's main gun can put out, but what the value of ore on the open market is and whether or not the cost of an attack on a mining facility would be worth the profit. But there are other numbers involved in the game, which were highlighted on <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com">MMORPG.com</a> in a piece about <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/14/feature/3599/page/1">the numbers behind the game</a> discussed at the recent <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/05/eve-fanfest-2009-highlights/">2009 Fanfest</a>.<br /><br />Among the more interesting statistics is the stated goal to have <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>'s total population exceed that of its country of origin, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceland">Iceland</a> -- a goal that the game has either nearly reached or exceeded if you count in the game's trial accounts, which are a bit of a revolving door but add a significant number of players to the total. The article also discusses the game's overall economy, player retention, and other interesting figures in relation to the game. Take a look if you'd like a peek behind the scenes of one of the most unique MMOs on the market right now.<br /><br />[ via <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com">MMORPG.com</a> ]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/09/playing-the-numbers-game-with-eve-online/">Playing the numbers game with EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 09 Oct 2009 13:00:00 EST. <div align="left">Now normally when we talk about <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, it's about a scandal, or some theft, or just the general talk on how to pilot your virtual spaceship better. This, however, is certainly not one of those <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> stories.<br /><br />So what is this story about? Well it's a story about what happens when you add rap to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a>. And what would happen if CCP made a rap video and got many members of their staff to star in it... because they did. The guy in the top? No, he's not some aspiring white rapper (although he might be after this) -- he's Sveinn Kjarval, <em>EVE</em>'s lead game master. The girls on his left and right? That's <em>EVE</em>'s marketing director on the left and the CEO's assistant on the right.<br /><br />Now before you go running off to find this golden video of awesome, we need to warn you, it's seriously not safe for work. (Except it's safe for CCP's work, because it's CCP's offices, so it's ok to watch this video if you work at CCP.) We'd love to embed it here for ya, but sadly, due to explicit lyrics (and a techno viking), we can't. But if you're ok with some NSFW content, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgvM7av1o1Q">then do we have the link for you</a>.<br /></div>

September is just a few days away and so the folks at <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> are keen to remind players that their Summer Buddy Program for <a href="http://eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> will conclude on September 1st. Why is this so important? Well, aside from introducing your pals to the world's biggest sci fi MMO, you are also <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Summer_Buddy_Program">in with a chance</a> to win a trip to this year's <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/">Fanfest</a> in Iceland for you and your friend as well as a trip to CCP's head office. The full prize is the following: <br /><em><br /></em>
<p><em>Two return flight tickets from any destination that Icelandair flies to for you and your EVE Online buddy.</em> </p>
<p><em>Hotel Accommodation in Reykjavik from Sept, 30, 2009 to Oct, 04, 2009</em> </p>
<p><em>Airport - Hotel transport in Reykjavik</em> </p>
<p><em>Two Fanfest VIP passes</em> </p>
<p><em>Organized visit to CCP HQ offices in Reykjavik</em></p>
<p><br /></p>
<p>All you need to do is have an active <a href="http://massively.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> account and start spreading the word, just get them signed up with a buddy account and then cross your fingers. When times get really harsh, the value of the currency can wildly go back and forth between numbers, creating a sense of unease as people don't know what their currency is worth.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a>, however, took up a new approach to paying their employees when the Icelandic Krona was volatile earlier this year -- <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/ccp-staff-paid-in-foreign-currency-during-economic-meltdown">paying their employees in foreign currency</a>.<br /><br />Employees were offered the option to accept paychecks in foreign currency, if they so wished, to provide employees with a stable income from a stable currency rather than receiving checks with the Krona. The move was easy on CCP's part, as the company is located in <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com/jobs/locations.asp">China, Iceland, and the United States</a> and makes most of their revenue in foreign currency anyway.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/10/ccp-staff-offered-the-option-of-being-paid-foreign-currency-duri/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CCP staff offered the option of being paid foreign currency during economic crisis</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/10/ccp-staff-offered-the-option-of-being-paid-foreign-currency-duri/">CCP staff offered the option of being paid foreign currency during economic crisis</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 10 Aug 2009 12:00:00 EST. CCP Games' <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/events/alliances/tournament/t7/">new Alliance Tournament page</a> explains what the event is all about: "<em>The EVE Online Alliance Tournament is the ultimate battlefield in which the top pilots in EVE Online fight for the glory and honour of their alliance. 64 Alliances compete over 3 weekends of intense, explosive action, with the final weekend broadcast live via EVE TV." </em><br /><br />Last year's was tournament was a big success, with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/31/massively-interviews-crovan-about-eve-alliance-pvp-tournament-vi/">some excellent commentary on the matches</a> from members of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> playerbase and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/01/eve-pvp-tournament-assassination-machiavellian-or-bad-form/">no small amount of drama</a>. The event runs from August 17 through the 19th at the Cologne Congress Center East. Hilmar's keynote will focus on how <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> rose from being a small Reykjavik-based studio with an obscure niche title to becoming a success story in the MMO industry with the growing popularity of <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, now running studios in Atlanta and Shanghai, as well as their hometown of Reykjavik. <br /><br />Perhaps the biggest news here is the reveal hinted at in the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/pressreleases/default.asp?pressReleaseID=58">CCP Games press release</a>: "<em>As a testament to the industry's potential for growth despite widespread economic turmoil and as an inspiration for up-and-coming independent studios, P&eacute;tursson will give an exclusive first look at the company's latest project, which is currently in pre-production." </em>We can only <em>assume</em> this is the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-darkness"><em>World of Darkness</em></a> MMO, but it could very well be a closer look at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/walking-in-stations"><em>Walking in Stations</em></a> or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/eve-online-moving-to-the-world-of-first-person-shooters/">any of the other projects CCP announced</a> at last year's Fanfest. Last year's tournament was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/01/eve-pvp-tournament-assassination-machiavellian-or-bad-form/">very entertaining</a>, both in terms of the matches themselves and the commentary from PvP experts selected from the playerbase, namely <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/31/massively-interviews-crovan-about-eve-alliance-pvp-tournament-vi/">Crovan</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/04/outlaws-of-eve-online-verone/">Verone</a>. <br /><br />This year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> Alliance Tournament VII will kick off in September. We don't have any further details on it yet, except that it will follow the same format that CCP used last year -- two weekends of qualifiers and a third weekend for the finals. Last year's finals were broadcast in live video, which is something that <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> wants to do again this in Alliance Tournament VII. In fact, they're now seeking PvP experts from among the <em>EVE</em> playerbase since it's worked out so well in the past. The requirements? <em>EVE</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-charlie">video producer CCP Charlie writes</a>, <em>"As an Expert you'll be on the set discussing the tournament, tactics, teams and talking with developers about EVE live on air. You'll also take shifts in the commentary booth providing live commentary on the matches themselves. You need to know your PvP and you need to know how to keep on talking!"</em> The first two weeks' commentary will be done from those players' homes (via EVE Voice and internet radio stations), but CCP Games will fly the Experts out to Reykjavik, Iceland for the final rounds, covering both the airfare and accommodation. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/">EVE Alliance Tournament VI</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327420"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/absolution_thumbnail.png" alt="Absolution" title="Absolution" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327421"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/d1m1-2_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327422"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/d1m2-1_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327424"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/d1m3-1_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327427"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/d1m3-3_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/30/ccp-games-seeking-players-to-commentate-eve-online-alliance-pvp/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CCP Games seeking players to commentate EVE Online Alliance PvP Tournament VII</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/30/ccp-games-seeking-players-to-commentate-eve-online-alliance-pvp/">CCP Games seeking players to commentate EVE Online Alliance PvP Tournament VII</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 30 May 2009 10:00:00 EST. To make things easier, CCP has <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/">launched a Fanfest site</a> that's a one-stop destination for all news and information surrounding the capsuleer pilgrimage to '<a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/party-at-the-top-of-the-world.html">the top of the world</a>.' Of course they've announced that <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/pvp.html">there will be a PvP tournament</a> taking place during Fanfest as well, which should come as no surprise to past attendees. Plus they've put together a <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/survival-guide.html">Reykjav&icirc;k survival guide</a> that highlights the city's dining options and nightlife. <br /><br />EVE Fanfest 2009 will last from October 1-3, and as always CCP Games has worked out <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/hotel-and-travel.html">package deals for attendees</a> with Icelandair that also include accommodation. A notable change this year is that <em>EVE</em> fans can purchase their Fanfest passes using PLEX, which is CCP's method of <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/30_days_Concord_Pilot_License_Extension">converting real world cash into an in-game item</a>, sold in-game for ISK and redeemable for buyers as actual playtime. They give more detail on their new <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/plex-for-passes.html">PLEX for Passes</a> program: <em>"In honor of our recent 6th anniversary, we decided to allow people to use PLEX to pay for their tickets to Fanfest, gathering as many players as possible. For the first time ever you can buy your Fanfest 2009 tickets with in-game Pilot License Extensions (PLEX). Using PLEX, attendees can attend Fanfest simply by playing EVE!"</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/20/ccp-games-launches-new-eve-fanfest-2009-site/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CCP Games launches new EVE Fanfest 2009 site</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/20/ccp-games-launches-new-eve-fanfest-2009-site/">CCP Games launches new EVE Fanfest 2009 site</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 20 May 2009 19:00:00 EST. It's held annually in Reykjavik, Iceland, the home of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a>, and is a major event for die-hard fans of the game. <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> dev CCP Tyr announced the sixth annual 'Party at the Top of the World' this week: <em>"It is time once again to start marking your calendars and making your reservations for the 2009 Fanfest in Reykjavik, Iceland! Get ready for another weekend of PvP tournaments, hanging out with the developers, and partying in a sea of fellow EVE Online fans. As always, Fanfest attendees will be treated to videos and announcements on the future of EVE and what players can expect in the upcoming expansions." <br /></em><br />Rather than holding it in November <a href="http://www.crazykinux.com/2009/03/ccp-pulls-fast-one-on-us-with-fanfest.html">as in all previous years</a>, they've moved up this year's Fanfest dates to October 1- 3, when the weather should hopefully be a bit warmer. The CSM is a council of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/council-of-stellar-management">representatives of the playerbase</a>, elected by the players themselves, who work with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> to ensure that the development pipeline reflects the interests of the subscribers. <br /><br />Being a CSM delegate can be both time-consuming and stressful, as past and present reps <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/13/eve-community-spotlight-jade-constantine/">Jade Constantine</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/eve-community-spotlight-lavista-vista/">LaVista Vista</a> have told us. Still, it offers players a chance at helping to shape the game they love, something which few other MMO developers would ever allow. Already on the CSM's radar for the next group of delegates is reworking (lawless) 0.0 space and its entrenched system of sovereignty, which is no small task.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/16/call-for-candidates-in-eve-onlines-player-elected-council-of-st/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Call for candidates in EVE Online's player-elected Council of Stellar Management</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/16/call-for-candidates-in-eve-onlines-player-elected-council-of-st/">Call for candidates in EVE Online's player-elected Council of Stellar Management</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 16 Mar 2009 09:00:00 EST. How does it impact your ability to assess the state of <em>EVE</em>'s economy, and are there assumptions you've made in the past that you need to reassess now?</strong><br /><br />It's a good thing that you mentioned the starbase exploit because <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/10/ccp-games-releases-findings-on-eve-starbase-exploit-investigatio/">we are in the final stages of creating a very thorough dev blog on that</a>, which will hopefully be published very soon. [Note: this interview was conducted just prior to the release of the investigation's findings.]<br /><br />There are certain things with the POS exploit that made it very difficult to detect. You basically needed to be able to go to that particular starbase and look at it, look at the setup and so on. It was difficult for us to detect it otherwise, except from the code once we knew what we were looking for.<br /><br />From a market perspective the <em>EVE</em> economy has become so big that in order for you to impact the market you will really have to have large quantities. And as will be shown in this dev blog that will be published, the scale of the exploit really didn't start until late 2008... <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/15/ccp-games-on-the-extent-and-impact-of-eves-starbase-exploit/">to the large industrial scale so that it started to impact the market</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/massively-interviews-eves-lead-economist-part-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively interviews EVE's Lead Economist part 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/massively-interviews-eves-lead-economist-part-2/">Massively interviews EVE's Lead Economist part 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 12:00:00 EST. One major aspect of the game is that its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">far future setting of New Eden</a> functions as one server, where players can build up empires -- or topple those of their rivals -- across more than 5000 solar systems. Beyond its scale, what distinguishes <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> from other games is that it has a player-driven virtual economy, the backbone of the game. <em>EVE</em>'s economy has been a major draw for players interested in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/crafting">market and crafting sophistication</a> generally unseen in an online game. <br /><br /><em>EVE</em>'s creators, <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a>, have fostered a setting where players can do what they want in the 'sandbox', a setting where the tools are in place for players to use as they see fit. Nearly every ship, module, and item used by a player in the game was produced by another player in New Eden at some point. Fight for military dominance and control vast regions of space, or corner the market as part of an industrial conglomerate -- it's all possible in <em>EVE</em>. In fact, the game's warfare and industry are very much intertwined, making <em>EVE</em>'s virtual economy a dynamic one. Monitoring and researching this economy is important to CCP Games, and to further that goal, they've hired real world economist Dr. Eyj&oacute;lfur Gu&eth;mundsson (aka CCP EyjoG). <br /><br />Massively recently caught up with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eyjolfur-gudmundsson/">Dr. EyjoG</a>, who told us about his rather unique position at CCP Games, and what he's learned about virtual economies along the way.<br /><strong></strong><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/massively-interviews-eve-online-lead-economist-dr-eyjog/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively interviews EVE Online Lead Economist Dr. EyjoG</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/massively-interviews-eve-online-lead-economist-dr-eyjog/">Massively interviews EVE Online Lead Economist Dr. EyjoG</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 12:00:00 EST. Those alliances vie for control of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/new-eden">New Eden galaxy</a>, sparking continual warfare and political upheaval among the thousands of pilots flying in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> at any given time. That's really the beauty of the game: the developers provide the setting, but it's the players who make it what it is. Alliance struggles are one of the defining features of the game, but not all scores are settled through massive fleet engagements. Some alliances opt to engage one another in an arena -- viewed by thousands of <em>EVE</em>'s pilots -- the <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/events/alliances/tournament/?t=6">Alliance PvP Tournament</a>. <br /><br />Alliance Tournament VI <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/24/eve-online-alliance-pvp-tournament-vi-begins-today/">kicked off last weekend</a>, continues this weekend with qualifying rounds, and will culminate in final rounds in February, which will be streamed as live video. As the Tournament is so significant to the players, each year <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> invites PvP experts from among the playerbase to be the tournament's commentators. Among those veteran combat pilots in <em>EVE Online</em>, <a href="http://bitteroldnoob.blogspot.com/">Crovan</a> certainly stands out. He, along with a small team of other PvP experts, was selected to provide live commentary on the matches. This should come as no problem for him, given the PvP experience gained from his time with <a href="http://eve-history.net/wiki/index.php/Mercenary_Coalition">now-legendary Mercenary Coalition</a> and being a familiar voice to many of us with <a href="http://www.virginworlds.com/podcast.php?show=17&amp;ep=20 ">The Drone Bay podcast</a>. <br /><br />Since The Drone Bay is the official podcast of the tournament, Crovan is recognizable to many listeners as the voice of the <em>EVE Online</em> Alliance Tournament VI. The fact that he's been a past Alliance Tournament competitor also gives him some additional perspective on the event. It's been a while since we spoke with Crovan -- we were fortunate enough to have him with us at Massively in the past through his excellent <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rogue-signal/">Rogue Signal column</a>. We caught up with Crovan this week, however, and he told us everything we wanted to know about the Alliance Tournament. <strong><br /></strong><strong></strong><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/">EVE Alliance Tournament VI</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327420"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/absolution_thumbnail.png" alt="Absolution" title="Absolution" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327421"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/d1m1-2_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327422"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/d1m2-1_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327424"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/d1m3-1_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/eve-alliance-tournament-vi/#1327427"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/01/d1m3-3_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/31/massively-interviews-crovan-about-eve-alliance-pvp-tournament-vi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively interviews Crovan about EVE Alliance PvP Tournament VI</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/31/massively-interviews-crovan-about-eve-alliance-pvp-tournament-vi/">Massively interviews Crovan about EVE Alliance PvP Tournament VI</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 31 Jan 2009 16:45:00 EST. This is especially prevalent in Iceland, home of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> -- the developers of the sci-fi massively multiplayer online game <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>. The collapse of Iceland's banking system and currency has been devastating to the nation. <em>"Icelanders are reeling from the shock of having everything they knew virtually disappear overnight,"</em> Valur Gunnarsson reports from Reykjavik for <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk">The Guardian</a>.<br /><br />Despite these economic woes, Hilmar V. P&eacute;tursson, the CEO of <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a>, gave assurances <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/16/ceo-of-ccp-games-addresses-eves-continuity-through-turbulent-ti/">all is well with the company</a> back in October. He's stated that CCP is "well isolated" from the banking crisis, that their holdings and assets were diversified enough (due to partner relationships in different parts of the world) to stave off the ruin that many other Icelandic companies are facing. But there's a potential downside to that diversification: restrictions on access to foreign currencies have gone into effect in Iceland. Specifically -- as it relates to CCP Games -- on foreign investment coming into the country. Are these restrictions enough of a hassle that CCP Games would ever need to leave Iceland?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/22/economic-crisis-may-force-ccp-games-to-leave-iceland/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Economic crisis may force CCP Games to leave Iceland</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/22/economic-crisis-may-force-ccp-games-to-leave-iceland/">Economic crisis may force CCP Games to leave Iceland</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 22 Dec 2008 19:00:00 EST. The news imparted at that time did not bode well for the future of the alliance tournaments, given the expense and level of involvement on the part of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> staff to run it. While <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> players cope with the withdrawal shakes, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> has released a behind-the-scenes video to check out, in addition to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/09/eves-quantum-rise-trailer-depicts-escalating-conflict/">the <em>Quantum Rise</em> trailer</a>. <br /><br /><em>EVE Online</em>: Behind the Scenes is in some ways an introduction for new players to the setting of New Eden and the company that creates <em>EVE</em>. For gamers who are already <em>EVE</em> players, the video is a look inside the <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> office in Reykjavik, and features interviews with several developers in addition to some nice visuals of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/23/eve-onlines-rumored-orca-ship-unveiled/">the new sub-capital industrial ship</a> arriving with this expansion, the Orca. This video should really be seen in high resolution to appreciate the details, and can be downloaded from the <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/news/downtimenews.asp ">temporary 'downtime news' <em>EVE</em> site</a> which is up during the expansion deployment. In terms of when <em>Quantum Rise</em> is expected to be ready and the servers open up for players, the latest update from CCP is that they're currently on schedule, with the servers to open on November 12th at 02:00 GMT. In the meantime, we've got the 'EVE Online: Behind the Scenes' video embedded for you below the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/11/behind-the-scenes-video-of-eve-online-expansion-quantum-rise/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Behind-the-scenes video of EVE Online expansion Quantum Rise</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/11/behind-the-scenes-video-of-eve-online-expansion-quantum-rise/">Behind-the-scenes video of EVE Online expansion Quantum Rise</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 11 Nov 2008 18:00:00 EST. Rather, the EVE TV team is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/29/eve-tv-returns-to-fanfest-seeking-interviews-with-players/">recording the events and interviewing players</a>, with the aim to make the video footage available to everyone after Fanfest. Those of you who would like to listen in should join the 'Live Dev Blog' in-game channel on Saturday, 8 November at 13:00 GMT." </em><br /><br />We've also gotten word that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hilmar-petursson/">CCP Games CEO Hilmar V. P&eacute;tursson</a>, (aka CCP Hellmar) will be delivering a keynote at 15:00 GMT on November 8th, which will also be broadcast live. While some players felt that the graphics as they were prior to Trinity were still ahead of the curve in terms of what's expected of an MMO, the look of the game changed dramatically with Trinity. However, the Trinity deployment wasn't a complete revamp of <em>EVE's</em> look. Ships and stations benefited from Premium graphics, but other celestial objects did not, jump gates notwithstanding.<br /><br /><em>"EVE is in a state where, if you run the Premium graphics edition, half of it is done, you could say,"</em> said Chief Technologist Halldor Fannar of <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a>, at Reykjavik's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eve-fanfest-2008">Fanfest 2008</a>, as reported by Oli Welsh of <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net">Eurogamer</a>. Future graphics updates will bring celestial objects in line with what's currently seen in Trinity, and may well arrive with the forthcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/walking-in-stations"><em>Walking in Stations</em></a> expansion which is slated to launch after the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/quantum-rise"><em>Quantum Rise</em></a> expansion, just around the corner.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/06/eve-fanfest-presentation-discusses-graphics-enhancements/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Fanfest presentation discusses graphics enhancements</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/06/eve-fanfest-presentation-discusses-graphics-enhancements/">EVE Fanfest presentation discusses graphics enhancements</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 06 Nov 2008 19:00:00 EST. While an economic downturn isn't something to be taken lightly, it is unique in comparison with similar problems in the past -- now real world economic issues can <em>potentially</em> ripple into virtual economies, just as they <em>certainly</em> impact the companies who create MMOs and virtual worlds. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/ccp-games">CCP Games,</a> founded in Reykjavik, Iceland, is a case-in-point. <br /><br />There has been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/15/real-world-economic-impact-on-mmos-and-virtual-worlds/">commentary and speculation</a> among <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online's</em></a> playerbase and in the media about how Iceland's economic woes may impact the game. That's the gist of a question posed by CBBC, a longtime commentator at the <a href="http://terranova.blogs.com/terra_nova/">Terra Nova blog,</a> but specifically he asks: <em>"What now for virtual economies? Will we see a run on games the same as a run on banks?" </em><br /><br />While his questions aren't focused solely on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online,</em></a> and are more of a general inquiry, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP's</a> title is not surprisingly the main example cited by both the CBBC and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/terra-nova">Terra Nova's</a> readers. As expected, the responses to the question are intelligent and shed some more light on how real world economics might affect MMO economies, namely that of <em>EVE Online.</em> Some speculate that real world issues will result in increased escapism, imbuing virtual worlds and their economies with greater significance. Others related financial scenarios that affect <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> and its virtual economics. If you're interested in the economies of MMOs and virtual worlds, you might want to get involved in the discussion of <a href="http://terranova.blogs.com/terra_nova/2008/10/whither-mmo-eco.html#more">"Whither MMO economies?"</a> over at Terra Nova.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/15/real-world-economic-impact-on-mmos-and-virtual-worlds/">Real world economic impact on MMOs and virtual worlds? </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 15 Oct 2008 18:00:00 EST.
