<em>The second </em><a href="http://www.guildwars2.com">Guild Wars 2</a><em> press beta weekend has come and gone, and Massively was there every step of the way. Stay tuned throughout the day today for even more <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/guild-wars-2-beta">guides, impressions, videos, and Q&amp;As</a> to get you ready for the highly anticipated sequel to </em><a href="http://www.guildwars.com">Guild Wars</a><em>.</em><br />
<br />
In just the few minutes that it takes to traverse the 10 screens of <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2's</em></a> character creation process, I'm left with one overriding thought: This game looks ridiculously good. Ludicrously so, even. And I didn't even enter the game world yet!<br />
<br />
I always love a good, in-depth character creation system, as there's a joy in spending a good amount of time making exactly the sort of character you want to play. Unfortunately, most MMOs have stripped this process down to the bare basics, which is why I'm pleased to announce that it's actually a mini-journey in and of itself in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>.<br />
<br />
The point of this process isn't just to make a character but help you grow attached to this person and get to know him or her through it. What are this character's motivations? What branch of his or her profession is the most appealing? How did you become a hero? What obstacles do you have to overcome?<br />
<br />
Instead of playing the game itself, I took some time over this beta testing weekend to dissect every step of the character creation system and bring my findings back to those of you who want to start building your character in your mind.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/breaking-down-guild-wars-2s-character-creator/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Breaking down Guild Wars 2's character creator</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/breaking-down-guild-wars-2s-character-creator/">Breaking down Guild Wars 2's character creator</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 26 Mar 2012 12:00:00 EST. It's another Thursday, and another week for Gamebreaker.TV's This Week in MMO. What's in store for this installment? Massively's very own Editor-in-Chief <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/shawn-schuster">Shawn Schuster</a> and Community Manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/rubi-bayer">Rubi Bayer</a> join regular host <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gary-gannon/">Gary Gannon</a> in "mature" discussion about MMOs.<br />
<br />
First up, Gary, Shawn, and Rubi run through the topic of the mature rating in MMOs such as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp/">CCP</a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-darkness/"><em>World of Darkness</em></a>. Then our intrepid hosts guide us through the magical and technological starting zone for the Asura in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>. Also, saving Metropolis just became cheaper -- free, in fact! Shawn and Rubi discuss <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online/">DC Universe Online</a>'s</em> entry to the free-to-play market. Where is the future of MMO-subscription models going? Freemium? When Shawn spoke to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sony-Online-Entertainment/">SOE</a> President <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-smedley/">John Smedley</a>, Smed certainly favored it.<br />
<br />
Moving on to another action-based game, Rubi reveals <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tera/"><em>TERA</em></a>'s PR speak within its endgame Q&amp;A statements, and Shawn admits that the small raid size in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world/"><em>The Secret World</em></a> isn't quite big enough for him.<br />
<br />
Catch all that and more in the full Gamebreaker.TV video after the break!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/22/this-week-in-mmo-rated-m-for-mature-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>This Week In MMO: Rated M for mature edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/22/this-week-in-mmo-rated-m-for-mature-edition/">This Week In MMO: Rated M for mature edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 22 Sep 2011 09:00:00 EST. If you're looking for something new to do in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eden-eternal">Eden Eternal</a></em> aside from killing monsters and stockpiling phat lewt, look no further than the mid-September content update. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aeria-games">Aeria Games</a> has just put out a press release detailing the patch, and the highlights include the new Anuran race along with a brand-new crafting system.<br />
<br />
Racial special abilities will also be making an appearance in the new patch, and they're tied into the new tradeskill mechanics. Characters at level 30 and above can participate in Gemcrafting (for Humans), Engineering (for Zumi), and Alchemy (for Anurans) to create a multitude of useful items including gear, potions, and dyes.<br />
<br />
The tradeskill goodness doesn't stop there, though, as players at level 20 and above are free to set up their own personal shops in the town of Aven. Finally, two new NPCs are being added to <em>Eden Eternal</em>, and Professor Koss gives timed XP boosts while Assistant Teren gifts players with different fortune bags throughout the day. Learn more about <em>Eden Eternal</em>, and grab the client, at the game's official website.<br />

After <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/17/ncsoft-announces-new-mmo-wildstar/">yesterday's unveiling</a> of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/carbine-studios/">Carbine Studio's</a> colorful entry into the MMO races, we've been understandably curious about this <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wildstar/"><em>WildStar</em></a> and could have s'more, please? Fortunately, a fan site has dug out some details about three of the game's races and classes, all of which can be seen in the hilarious trailer that Carbine released.<br />
<br />
On the racial side, players have the Granok, Human and Aurin to choose from. The Granok are hulking, cigar-chomping slabs of rage, the Humans are exiles looking for a new home, and the Aurin are cute bunny-people who must go through Q-tips like mad.<br />
<br />
As for classes, players who prefer to get up close and personal with their enemies would do well to choose the Warrior, who boasts a number of strong tech and melee attacks, which are powered by fuel cells and adrenaline, respectively. Spellslingers use a pair of special pistols to stay on top of ranged damage, relying on a balanced rotation of magic and gunplay to keep up with DPS. And finally there's the Esper, your standard Mage class, who uses psychic spells like Telekenetic Strike to do massive damage to helpless enemies.<br />
<br />
There are reportedly more classes and races than just these, and we'll keep our eyes on Carbine as more details pour out about this promising title.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/18/gamescom-2011-wildstar-reveals-first-three-races-and-classes/">Gamescom 2011: WildStar reveals first three races and classes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 09:00:00 EST. It's only been 15 days since <a href="http://www.mythos-europe.com/en/index.html"><em>Mythos Europe</em></a> launched, but the resurrected action MMO is already seeing impressive results. According to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/frogster/">Frogster</a>, over 250,000 players have jumped into the game for some hectic hack-n-slash fun.<br />
<br />
The company also provided some revealing statistics as it monitored its quarter-million playerbase. Apparently, the most popular class is the Bloodletter (40% of players), followed by the Pyromancer (32%) and Gadgeteer (28%). A full third of the playerbase chose the human race, with 28% going over to the Gremlins, 27% to the Satyrs, and 15% to the Cyclops. Finally, 66% of the characters created are male. So if you want to be a rarity, rolling a female Cyclops Gadgeteer is the way to go!<br />
<br />

Last week was an exciting one for <a href="http://www.guildwars.com">Guild Wars</a>/<a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> fans, myself included. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>GW2</em></a> might be bringing us five playable races, but <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a> spent the past week delving into the original Tyrian playable race: the humans. <br />
<br />
This was especially exciting to those of us who are longtime residents of Tyria, because we've got lots of new details set on a foundation of familiar history and lore. Here at Massively, we touched on each new piece of information with the promise of an overall analysis today, so here we go! Follow along after the jump and we'll take a look at the human race of <em>Guild Wars 2</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/14/flameseeker-chronicles-were-only-human/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Flameseeker Chronicles: We're only human</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/14/flameseeker-chronicles-were-only-human/">Flameseeker Chronicles: We're only human</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 14 Feb 2011 14:00:00 EST. The Humans in <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> may be down on their luck (and population) but they're certainly not out. As <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a> continues <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/07/a-week-of-humanity-for-guild-wars-2/">Human Week</a>, a new blog entry titled <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/the-line-of-duty-%E2%80%93-the-three-military-orders-of-kryta">The Line of Duty</a> introduces us to the three main military forces representing our spunky cousins -- and why they don't necessarily get along.<br />
<br />
First and foremost are the Seraph, who act as both the backbone of the military and the police force for the Human settlements. While the Seraph are widespread in Kryta, the Ministry Guard -- the protectors of the Human government and nobility -- mainly focus their efforts in the capital of Divinity's Reach. However, watching over the Royal Family is the responsibility of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/shining-blade/">Shining Blade</a>, an elite force of warriors and spies. The Shining Blade should be familiar to those who fought in <a href="http://www.guildwars.com/"><em>Guild Wars'</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/war-in-kryta/">War in Kryta campaign</a>.<br />
<br />
Each of these military branches vies for influence and authority over the others, although the Shining Blade tends to be at the top of the pecking order while the Seraph take up position as the whipping boys (and girls). As ArenaNet writes, this causes "a tug-of-war for influence and control" amongst the beleaguered armed forces.<br />
<br />
You can read about the clash of politics, position and power between these forces <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/the-line-of-duty-%E2%80%93-the-three-military-orders-of-kryta">on the ArenaNet blog</a> -- and stay tuned for this coming Monday, when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/flameseeker-chronicles">Flameseeker Chronicles</a> will give a colorful commentary on the whole of Human Week.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/11/arenanet-declassifies-guild-wars-2s-human-military-files/">ArenaNet declassifies Guild Wars 2's Human military files</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 11 Feb 2011 17:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> fans were treated to an early-morning release of the <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/races/human/">newest dose of human information</a> today.<br />
<br />
Today's reveal gave a brief summary of human history, a tale well-known to <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> players, along with some interesting new details on familiar foes such as the <a href="http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Modniir">Modniir</a>. The human gods have withdrawn from their followers, and this information tells us more about their motivation and the human response. <br />
<br />
The cherry on top is the new video entitled "Kryta: The Last Human Homeland." It's a sweeping tour of <a href="http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Divinity%27s_Reach">Divinity's Reach</a> and an introduction to the Krytan area of Valley Hill, accompanied by a new musical score, as well as the ambient sound and voicework that is fast becoming a hallmark of <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>. <br />

Today's <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a> blog post continues <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/07/a-week-of-humanity-for-guild-wars-2/">Human Week</a> for <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> -- a week-long look at the human race of Tyria. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> writer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-ryan">John Ryan</a> penned "<a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/against-the-wall-humanity-in-guild-wars-2">Against the Wall</a>" focusing on the race's history. <br />
<br />
What made this entry special, however, were the six audio clips scattered throughout the post. Each facet of human history was supplemented with voice work to illustrate what we'll hear in <em>Guild Wars 2</em>, giving us over five minutes of audio as a little taste of what's to come during gameplay. <br />
<br />
Check out the history and audio of the <em>Guild Wars 2</em> human race, and watch for next Monday's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/flameseeker-chronicles/">Flameseeker Chronicles</a> as we do a full analysis of Human Week.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/08/newest-arenanet-blog-post-introduces-guild-wars-2-audio/">Newest ArenaNet blog post introduces Guild Wars 2 audio</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 Feb 2011 15:30:00 EST. Even though they've been the only playable race for all of <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>, humans have never had an easy run of things. Beset by enemies that destroyed the nations of Ascalon and Orr, manipulated by otherworldly beings, and thrown into conflict again and again, human beings have always triumphed in the end. And while the 250 years between the original game and <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> have only served to heap more indignities on the race, the nation of Kryta has withstood the onslaughts and endured. That's why humans are the first race to be featured with <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/oh-the-humanity-human-week-begins">a full week of discussion</a>.<br />
<br />
Human Week is kicking off today for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars-2/">Guild Wars 2</a></em> with three pieces of concept art and plans for the next several days. Tuesday will see a reveal on the human story and crafting the proper tone, Wednesday will be reserved for discussing human style and clothing, and Thursday will see more background detail and a homeland video tour. Then Friday will unveil the balance between Kryta's three armed factions, no doubt one of the main flashpoints for conflict in the game's story. <em>GW2</em> might be starting with the most familiar race of all, but as always, the lore and design reveals <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/oh-the-humanity-human-week-begins">promise to be anything but pedestrian</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/07/a-week-of-humanity-for-guild-wars-2/">A week of humanity for Guild Wars 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 07 Feb 2011 19:00:00 EST. <br />
<em>TERA</em> is currently gearing up for its Korean open beta, with a European and North American launch expected in 2011. Join us for all the juicy details after the cut.<br />

<em>"By the time you see one,"</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/perfect-world-entertainment/">Perfect World Entertainment</a> promises,<em> "it's already too late."</em> Of course when you do see one of Forsaken World's assassins, your last thought may be,<em> </em>"Where are all your clothes, girl?"<br />
<br />
The assassin is the focus of <a href="http://fw.perfectworld.com/news/?p=120711"><em>Forsaken World's</em></a> <a href="http://fw.perfectworld.com/news/?p=120711">latest class spotlight</a>, and if you're thinking "rogue" right now, you're not too far off the mark. This class, playable only by Human and Kindred characters, certainly seems to embody many of the typical qualities of a MMO rogue, from dual-wielding to stealth attacks to working off a combo points system. However, they do get a few interesting abilities, such as being able to run down fleeing opponents with as much mercy as you might expect from an assassin.<br />
<br />
The class spotlight also lists a few of the assassin's skills-in-progress, which include a brief increase to run speed, the ability to enter and remain in stealth even while in combat, and transferring a slow effect from yourself to your enemy. You can read the full rundown <a href="http://fw.perfectworld.com/news/?p=120711">over at <em>Forsaken World</em></a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/23/forsaken-worlds-assassin-slices-and-dices/">Forsaken World's assassin slices and dices</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 11:00:00 EST. As some of you may know, I love roleplaying in MMOs. Most of the MMOs I've played have had RPG tagged at the end. Even though it's not required to roleplay to enjoy an MMORPG, immersion is compounded when you do, therefore fun is compounded, too. In the Star Wars universe, I could not help but wrap myself in lore when I played a soldier or agent of the Galactic Empire. From line and formation to order and procedure -- all of this was in service to His Majesty, the Emperor. Of all the characters I made over my seven years of <a href="http://www.starwarsgalaxies.com"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a>, my Imperial characters were the most purpose-driven.<br />
<br />
When <a href="http://www.bioware.com">Bioware</a> announced the <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/classes/trooper">trooper class</a> for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>, many players asked who would want to play a clone. There's no personality there, no motivation or character development, right? I disagree very strongly. In fact, I will go so far as to say I believe there is only one binding factor between soldier types: loyalty. Even then there are different types of loyalties and different motivations behind an individual character's loyalties.<br />
<br />
Step past the break and watch as I contrast the loyalty of famous factions of existing Star Wars soldiers and compare them to the trooper and agent classes of <em>SWTOR</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/12/hyperspace-beacon-loyal-to-their-cause/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: Loyal to their cause</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/12/hyperspace-beacon-loyal-to-their-cause/">Hyperspace Beacon: Loyal to their cause</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 12 Jul 2010 15:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> has a very early, very wonderful holiday gift for <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> fans this morning: a brand new <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> trailer. (Take a moment to cheer, then we'll move on.) The trailer is amazingly beautiful, something we've come to expect from <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a> and particularly <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>. But if you don't let yourself get distracted by the eye candy -- something that is admittedly hard to do -- there is a lot of new information here, including more details on people and places we've already heard of, and some fascinating possibilities to explore.<br />
<br />
Take a look at the video here, then follow along with us as we explore this new information from ArenaNet. If you're unfamiliar with <em>Guild Wars 2</em>, this will help you get acquainted, but we also have some deep lore speculation for current <em>Guild Wars</em> fans. (The video can also be found at the <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/">official <em>Guild Wars 2</em> site</a>.)<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/04/analyzing-the-newest-guild-wars-2-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Analyzing the newest Guild Wars 2 trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/04/analyzing-the-newest-guild-wars-2-trailer/">Analyzing the newest Guild Wars 2 trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 04 Dec 2009 11:00:00 EST. Some of the best art has a purposeful visual direction and that seems to be the case with <em><a href="http://www.blackprophecy.com">Black Prophecy's</a></em> Human faction. It also helps when your game has an incredibly beautiful rendering engine and a cockpit view to show every glorious detail off up close and personal.<br /><br />For those of us into the art design of a game, <a href="http://www.blackprophecy.com/?id=95">this recent developer diary</a> on the Human art direction will most certainly interest you -- especially since it gets pretty in-depth on the reasoning behind every line and curve. The three page write-up goes into detail on the faction logo's origins, ship and station structural design. A lot of time is spent describing the real world parallels of the Humans in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Black-Prophecy/">Black Prophecy</a></em> to, well, us.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/29/the-art-direction-of-black-prophecys-humans/">The art direction of Black Prophecy's humans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 29 Sep 2009 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.swtor.com/media/webcomic/act1?comicpage=22#/22/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic's</em> free online comic</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/threat-of-peace">Threat of Peace</a>, has reached issue number eight and finally introduced one of those lovable droids. It's safe to say that so far throughout this storyline, many of the prominent characters and their prospective races featured in this comic have the potential to be in-game racial options. Humans, Twi'leks and Wookiees have all been popular thus far, and now it looks like droids may in fact be a possibility. It's positively delightful!<br /><br />Of course, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/04/e3-2009-star-wars-the-old-republic-demonstration/">races that have seen the limelight</a> in Threat of Peace aren't the only signs of things to come. Bounty Hunters and Troopers both received notable attention. Whether or not this sets any kind of reasonable precedent is something we'll leave up to you, however.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/07/threat-of-peace-issue-8-could-be-dropping-hints/">Threat of Peace issue 8 could be dropping hints</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 07 Jun 2009 16:00:00 EST. Hark! New screenshots for <em><a href="http://www.lotro.com">Lord of the Rings Online's</a></em> free Volume II: Book 7 update have, uh, revealed themselves! Okay, we won't expose you -- our dear readers -- to any further torture. We realize that sometimes our diatribes can go a bit <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/10/know-your-lotro-lore-lothlorien/">deep into the nerdy lore of J.R.R. Tolkien's world</a>.<br /><br />These six new screens are focused on the new player experience overhaul that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Turbine/">Turbine</a> has given to each of the starting zones within the game. We're really digging this goblin dude, who looks pretty devious. Although <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/1426435/">the caterpillar/butterfly guy</a> being attacked by a Human Warden is also quite a nice shot, as well. We've got all six in our gallery, so feel free to pick your own favorites!<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/">LotRO Volume 2: Book 7</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465426"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465425"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465424"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465423"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465422"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/12/six-maliciously-fresh-screens-from-lotros-new-player-experience/">Six maliciously fresh screens from LotRO's new player experience</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 12 Mar 2009 16:00:00 EST. <div align="left">Bet you'd just about forgotten about <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> by this point, hadn't you? There was a big <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/11/liveblog-info-videos-and-more-from-the-star-trek-online-liveca/">explosion of information</a> when <a href="http://www.crypticstudios.com">Cryptic</a> announced its iteration of the game in August, but since then, we've seen less and less information as time's gone by. But lo! There has been an update at the officlal site! Turns out the executive producer, Craig Zinkievich, <a href="http://sknr.net/2008/11/18/star-trek-online-interview/">did an interview with Skewed and Reviewed</a>.<br /><br />It makes for a decent overview if you're new to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, but there isn't much in the way of new gameplay information except for some specific revelations about visitable locales and playable races. First of all, he confirmed that Deep Space Nine -- the setting of the TV series of the same name -- will be in the game. He also rattled off a few of the playable races (but not all, and remember you can create your own): "Human, Vulcan, Andorian, Klingon, Orion and several others." Trekkers / trekkies should be glad to hear that there will be no shortage of scantily clad green people or blue antennae.</div>

We've already posted <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/21/massively-goes-to-war-character-creation-video-for-order-classe/">video of character creation</a> from <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>'s Order races. Now it's time for video of Destruction creation (oxymoron? You decide.) The three vids after the jump show different options for the Goblin, Chaos (Human) and Dark Elf races as well as different gender models where applicable.<br /><br />You'll notice that there are no female choices for any Goblin career, no female choices for the Chaos tank and melee dps career and no male option for the Dark Elf Witch Elf career. We guess Marilyn Manson in a bikini wasn't that appealing when it came down to it.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/21/massively-goes-to-war-character-creation-video-for-destruc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em> Massively goes to WAR: Character creation video for Destruction classes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/21/massively-goes-to-war-character-creation-video-for-destruc/"> Massively goes to WAR: Character creation video for Destruction classes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 21 Aug 2008 13:00:00 EST. Those who bought the Collector's Edition of <a href="http://warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> get their preview weekend in a few days. And open beta will start soon after that. But for those who can't wait, we've recorded video of some of the character creation options in the game.<br /><br />After the jump you'll find three videos, each covering one of the races of Order: Dwarves, Empire (Human) and High Elf. As a kid, I grew up on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Mostly because my parents watched it constantly, but also because I found that I enjoyed the show. Another staple of my nerd-influenced upbringing was a steady diet of Star Trek movies. Since those formative years I've also watched Deep Space Nine, Babylon 5, Voyager and more recently Battlestar Galactica. So it's safe to say I'm at least a casual sci-fi and space nerd. In fact, when I'm not entrenched in some form of entertainment, I tend to spend my extra time over at the official website of <a href="http://research.amnh.org/~tyson/">Astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson</a>. <br /><br />Of course Star Trek has never been purely about Science. It's always been -- to me, at least -- a mixture of social-political issues, engaging drama and several degrees of actual science. Different writers and directors have, over several decades, writ large their envisioned versions of Star Trek, with varying amounts of the three critical factors that make up a Star Trek experience. So, obviously, I now find myself wondering what <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic">Cryptic Studio's</a> massively multiplayer online version is going to be like.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/16/the-digital-continuum-pondering-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: Pondering Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/16/the-digital-continuum-pondering-star-trek-online/">The Digital Continuum: Pondering Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 16 Aug 2008 20:00:00 EST. There is much buzz in the MMOG universe this morning about the upcoming title <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. Being absolute fanboys and fangirls of Star Trek ourselves (much like <a href="http://sto-zone.com/blog/">our friends at <em>STO</em> Zone</a> who had the same idea) we wanted to show you a couple of nuggets of interesting art that we've extracted. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/os183_sto_fullsize.jpg">These two images</a> were <a href="http://media3.startrekonline.com/img/bg_mission.jpg">taken</a> from the <a href="http://media3.startrekonline.com/img/bg_bridge.jpg">backgrounds</a> of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/">Star Trek Online</a></em> site that was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/cryptic-officially-announces-star-trek-online/">unveiled last night</a>. <br /><br />The top image shows an <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Andorian">Andorian</a> female in the foreground of what appears to be an away team. Some of the staff think that may be either a <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Bolian">Bolian</a>, <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Benzite">Benzite</a> or an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orion_(Star_Trek)">Orion male</a> to her left, but it's very hard to make out. (Not that many people <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Image:Orion_slavegirl_ENT.jpg">remember the Orion <em>males</em> anyway</a>.) Below that is a Klingon at the helm of what appears to be a Bird of Prey with a Human, Ferengi, Cardassian and Vulcan manning the controls, dressed in Federation uniform, or wearing Federation insignia. <a href="http://www.michaelcmcgreevy.com/1/2008/07/Rampant-Speculation.cfm">Speculation from some blog sites</a> suggest that Cryptic is likely looking at a period of time post-DS9, tied to the Officer Exchange Program that started in the episode "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Matter_of_Honor">A Matter of Honor</a>" during the TNG series. It seems like an excellent spot in the continuity to place an MMO, we think. <br /></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/the-hidden-art-of-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The hidden art of Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/the-hidden-art-of-star-trek-online/">The hidden art of Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 28 Jul 2008 15:00:00 EST. So it can be hard to find a decent name for your human. Everyone wants to be a hero, for their character to be great and achieve fame and glory. But can you do this without naming your character "Aragorrn" or "Boromier"? You bet! This guide will take you through finding the perfect first name and surname for your man or woman.<br /> <br /> Unlike the other races, a member of the Race of Man's name relies heavily on its origin/nationality. A man from <a href="http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Lore:Dale">Dale's</a> name is going to sound nothing like the name of a man from <a href="http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Lore:Bree">Bree</a>. The conventions for both the first names and surnames are highly varied between each culture. This is mostly due to the fact that men live such short lives and live so far away from each other, and also due to war, which has separated members of the race greatly. The cultures of the four nationalities are so varied that if you want a lore-appropriate name for role-playing, you will have to choose the name first based on your character's chosen nationality. With the other races, this isn't as important.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/08/blogging-into-mordor-finding-the-perfect-name-for-your-man-or/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Blogging into Mordor: Finding the perfect name for your Man (or Woman)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/08/blogging-into-mordor-finding-the-perfect-name-for-your-man-or/">Blogging into Mordor: Finding the perfect name for your Man (or Woman)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 08 Jun 2008 09:00:00 EST. I've never really taken a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/04/comparing-subscriptions-and-microtransactions-made-easy/">stance on the matter</a>, as I've always been a bit unsure of which side of the argument I fell on.<br />
<div align="left"><br />I recently had an epiphany on my stance. Everyone that is talking about microtranasctions seems to be missing something important. They're all a little bit wrong. Michael Zenke (one of our intrepid leads here at Massively) <a href="http://www.mmognation.com/2008/04/21/anti-microtransaction-bigotry/">recently brought up the subject</a> in a different light and in doing so made me come to this realization that we'd all been missing an important factor in this discussion.<br /><br />I think we need to stop looking at microtransactions with a black or white lens. Monthly subscriptions and single-dollar purchases aren't the only options available to us. In a press release found on <a href="http://www.warcry.com">WarCry Network</a>, <a href="http://www.flagshipstudios.com/">Flagship Studios</a> Seattle <a href="http://www.warcry.com/news/view/78800-Mythos-New-Trailer">released a new trailer</a> for their free MMO in closed beta, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mythos/">Mythos</a></em>. The video features new footage of gameplay, and narration by a producer, Brock Jones, and programmer, Marsh Lefler. If this game seems familiar, that's because Flagship was responsible for <em>Diablo II</em> many moons ago.<br /><br />According to the press release, you can play as one of three races, Human, Elves, and Gremlins, in this free-to-play MMO.
