You haven't steered me wrong. At least, not yet.<br />
<br />
I am pretty sure there is that nagging worry at the back of the Massively writers' minds when they give themselves over to the masses for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure">Choose My Adventure</a>. Sure, there is an element of mystery and excitement, but what if... just what if the majority manifests an evil streak and sends you careening over an embankment to your virtual doom? Or banishes you to tasks that would make you want to lobotomize yourself with your mouse -- things like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/02/choose-my-adventure-taking-a-right-at-paragon-city/">run Death From Below repeatedly</a>? Thankfully, you all spared me from such torture. And with this week's tour of the Mission Architect system in <em><a href="http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/index.php">City of Heroes</a></em>, you definitely steered me right -- this is my favorite aspect of the game yet!<br />
<br />
I am glad to say that my trust in you all has not been unfounded, and I will speak on your behalf to the others. The fact is, I have enjoyed our little road trip immensely and am sad it must come to an end. You read that headline right: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> will be introducing player starbases in its upcoming Season 6. For the first time in the game, fleets will be able to band together to build a virtual home in the icy blackness of space.<br />

The project was spearheaded by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic</a> Lead Artist <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeremy-mattson/">Jeremy Mattson</a>, who was given the task of conceptualizing and designing this core feature of the path. It is sound advice for avoiding filling your cart with impulse purchases that might decimate your budget (and your waistline). Everyone loves <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/housing/">player housing</a>, right? Oh, quiet you in the back. Look into my eye: Everyone loves player housing. It is the number one most requested, demanded, and mandatory feature of every MMO. In terms of priority, "having monsters to kill in the game" is lower than giving us sweet pads to decorate. This is the way the virtual world should be and always has been.<br />
<br />
Well, now that I've dipped into the well of delusion, it's time to emerge with my hair sopping wet and my mind open to the possibility of a player housing revival. With the advent of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion's</em></a> 3.0 update, players in this now-free-to-play game can move into a suburban dreamhouse and spend countless hours figuring out the exact decor to match the subtle majesty of the bathroom's toilet.<br />
<br />
But is it enough to challenge the de facto leader of player housing, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>? Mountains of novels have been written on this game's housing system, novels that were then used to construct a giant book fort in the middle of the grand ballroom. Because that's just how flexible that system can be.<br />

Whenever the Great MMO Housing debate rears its head, the "of course MMOs ought to have housing" players usually drown out the curmudgeons who lack decorating skills and prefer to live out of their banks and sleep on a bedroll on the public streets (you know who you are!). And then, inevitably, the housing fans turn on each other over which type of housing is best.<br />
<br />
Some of us are resigned to the belief that, at best, themepark MMOs willing to take a stab at housing are forever going to implement the instanced variety a la <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EverQuest-II/">EverQuest II</a></em> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Lord-of-the-Rings-Online/">Lord of the Rings Online</a></em>, so we may as well get used to it. But sandbox zealots (a term I'm intending affectionately) insist that housing must be open-world, that players should be able to walk up to their own unique spaces within a game and build their abodes from foundation to rooftop. Instanced housing, they say, is just pointless when other people can't easily see what you've created.<br />

As one of 3.0's most anticipated features, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/23/wings-over-atreia-the-skinny-on-housing-from-ncsoft/">player housing</a> brought a whole new facet of gaming to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a>. Along with the studios, houses, and estates, housing provided Daevas the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity and decorating flair, and players have been taking full advantage of the system. Now, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft/">NCsoft</a> wants to reward players for sprucing up their Atreian homes with a contest titled Decorate Your Space.<br />

Think you have a pretty snazzy pad? Then show off those mad decorating skills! All Daevas over level 20 are eligible; just submit up to three unaltered screenshots of your living space via the <a href="http://forums.na.aiononline.com/na/showthread.php?t=84693">contest thread</a> or by email to <a href="mailto:community_aion_en@ncsoft.com?subject=Decorate%20Your%20Space%20Contest%21">community_aion_en@ncsoft.com</a> by 12:59 a.m. EDT on May 19th. The top three homes judged best decorated will win special 60-day, two-drawer cabinets with an extra 18 slots of storage space.<br />

Don't look so surprised! Is it really so far-fetched to think that developers care about and want to keep an eye on the thoughts and reactions of their playerbase? Well, other than to just laugh at us of course. *wink* I kid, I kid.<br />
<br />
In all seriousness, though, when I shared my <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/16/wings-over-atreia-3.0-its-heere/">first impressions</a> of the long anticipated <em><a href="http://na.aiononline.com/">Aion: Ascension</a></em>, I noted some letdowns amid the greater aspects. My opinions were formed from what information could be gleaned from actual in-game play during those first days after release. Of course, not all of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion's</em></a> new features could really be explored and enjoyed in that short span of time, so that, coupled with a lack of published information (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/wings-over-atreia-producing-info/">shocking!</a>), meant I wasn't even close to a comprehensive understanding. But my disappointments in the temporary aspects of some housing and other items as well as the high cost of housing struck a chord with others as well.<br />
<br />
To our benefit, NCsoft was listening. Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/adam-christensen/">Adam Christensen</a> and Associate Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sean-Orlikowski/">Sean Orlikowski</a> quickly addressed some of the concerns noted, sending us more information to share. Along with clarification, we received an exclusive look at the housing release schedule for both the Asmodian and Elyos factions. If you know which real estate you want, check the schedule below to see when your spot hits the market. Few MMOs nowadays launch with housing, and a vanishingly small number of those have fully customizable housing, the kind that lets you construct your house from foundation to tower, filling in floors, walls, and decor as you go. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Ultima-Online/">Ultima Online</a></em> is one such MMO; it changed over its pre-fab buildings to customizable housing in the early aughts.<br />
<br />
Customizable housing in an open-world sandbox setting brings its own set of problems, however, starting with the reality that most players aren't taking time out of their professional architect day jobs to play the game. Consequently, most player homes are decked out in bold colors and tacky tchotchkes and cleverly placed roof tiles that spell "LOL." I don't know about you guys, but my real-life house doesn't have an Escher fountain and mounted fish hanging on the second-story facade (although perhaps it <em>should</em>).<br />
<br />
What do you think -- is customizable housing a tribute to creativity and freedom or an eyesore immersion-breaker inflicted ruthlessly on every passerby and neighbor? Is that freedom worth the pain?<br />

Awwwww yeah! Update <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aion-3.0/">3.0</a>, baby! Come to me, features.<br />
<br />
Like Christmas for a five-year-old, this day seemed like it would never arrive for those of us who have been waiting for <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/"><em>Aion's</em></a> patch for what feels like forever. And ever. And then some. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion">Aion: Ascension</a></em> certainly took its jolly sweet time getting here, but now it finally has. Even better, you don't have to dodge creepy clowns or be sucked into a television screen to enjoy it.<br />
<br />
Now the question is, is the product really worth the hype? I know I have certainly dished out a fair portion of hype in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/wings-over-atreia">Wings Over Atreia</a> over the past couple of months while sharing my excitement. Too many delectable features were on the menu, things that would breathe more life into the game, for me not to indulge a bit. But as with any hype, there is always a chance for things to not live up to expectations.<br />

So is the new patch as grand and glorious as hoped? Remember back when this answer was lobbed at you as <em>the</em> definitive answer (often by moms tired of incessant "why"s or as a precursor to "I said so!")? But since I am not your mom -- and more importantly, the boss isn't about to pay me for a one word article -- let me elaborate, though, I warn you, you may regret it; once I get going I may not be able to stop! Simply put, I love <em><a href="http://www.everquest2.com/">EverQuest II</a></em>. I log into it daily. Sometimes I don't leave for more hours than I am willing to admit. I can hum the guild hall music from memory. I have a list of things I want to do so long I can't possibly get it all done. All this after taking a multi-year break. Yes folks, I left the game for a long time -- a move I am still kicking myself for. But certain features pulled me back, and let me just say, I am so glad I came back.<br />

Information is like gold 'round these parts, and I've been out prospecting, sifting, and searching in the hopes of at least finding a few flakes if not hitting pay dirt. But even with <em><a href="http://na.aiononline.com/">Aion</a> </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Ascension/">Ascension</a> just around the corner, finding many nuggets of information on the new BlackCloud Marketplace hasn't panned out. Until now. Eureka!<br />

Welcome to the Massively Gold Rush. OK, so maybe a "rush" is a bit of an overstatement, but I have discovered a few golden nuggets about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion's</em></a> renovated cash shop and impending <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/20/wings-over-atreia-ode-to-3-0/">3.0</a> expansion. I had the chance to catch up with Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/adam-christensen/">Adam Christensen</a> and learn a bit more about what Daevas will find in the BlackCloud Marketplace as well as get some details about various new upcoming features like housing, mounts, and the level 60 Daevanion armor.<br />

Last week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2012/">GDC</a> came at a perfect time for <a href="http://trionworld.com">Trion</a>. The conference overlaps perfectly with <a href="http://riftgame.com"><em>RIFT's</em></a> one-year anniversary, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/adam-gershowitz/">Producer Adam Gershowitz</a> took us through some highlights of the past year as well as the current Carnival of the Ascended content. Creativity. It is expressed in so many ways in so many mediums. Art, literature, architecture, music, performance... I love it all, conventional and unconventional. Heck, I revel in it! Why do you think my work and recreation include gaming?<br />

Beyond the artistry of the developers, MMORPGs offer outlets for player creativity in a variety of ways. I am not ashamed to admit that the primary reason I delve into MMORPGs is not for the gameplay but to explore and experience the creative expression of others (and to express some of my own as well). In fact, finding and sharing that very creativity by championing and highlighting player-generated content is precisely what <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/some-assembly-required/">Some Assembly Required</a> is about.<br />

Between (or in lieu of) the hacking, the slashing, and the plundering, players seize proffered tools in myriad virtual realms to build works of art, pen masterpieces, construct edifices, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/19/some-assembly-required-issue-4-making-music-in-lotro/">compose melodies</a>, and take the stage, all within the pixeled confines of a virtual world. Unfortunately, not all games have adequate tools for such creative expression. While inspired players can make do if they must, having supporting features exponentially enhances a game (and positively affects retention). Thankfully, some games provide a few standard-setting features that -- in my opinion -- should be included in every game on the market. To live up to the claim of being an extensively player-built game world is a significant challenge for the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Pathfinder-Online/"><em>Pathfinder Online</em></a> team, but to the devs' credit, it seems as if they have a few elegant ideas to make it work. In the latest developer blog post, CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ryan-dancey/">Ryan Dancey</a> discusses how the team is approaching player-built structures in the game world.<br />
<br />
While there will be three NPC settlements, player structures will be a significant presence in <em>Pathfinder Online</em>, Dancey says. Not only will a player be given the ability to create a persistent structure, but that structure will be vulnerable to destruction as well if not protected. Dancey says that the idea right now is for the world to have special spots that signify a suitable building location; this is to keep the density from growing out of control and also to put buildings near desirable sites or resources. Once a structure is built by a group of players, it can be transferred to new ownership, built up, or attacked.<br />
<br />
Some of the structures that the team is kicking around include hideouts, inns, watchtowers, forts, and settlements. Dancey also mentioned that players may be able to improve roads and docks in order to facilitate faster travel.<br />
<br />
The one downside to the logistics of this feature is that players might not be able to go inside these structures; instead, they'll to access housing abilities via menus. Who would have thought that something as mundane as tractors could get us so excited? And yet <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/ArcheAge/">ArcheAge</a></em> does exactly that, as a new video from the closed beta shows off the latest model of drivable tractors, useful in both field irrigation and cargo hauling. Players are shown spraying down fields with a forward-facing nozzle, resulting in the quick growth of plants.<br />
<br />
In addition to the zen and art of tractor pulling, this video briefly highlights several other aspects of this gorgeous game. It illuminates the creation and use of a trebuchet in castle sieges, underwater exploration, housing decorations, and painstakingly animated dragon-lion mounts.<br />
<br />
While the video may not be in English, it's still a drop of cool water in the mouths of fans thirsty for this upcoming MMO. You can check out all of the lush goodness after the break.<br />

Among all the cues that <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/">Final Fantasy XIV</a></em> took from <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XI/">Final Fantasy XI</a></em>, there was an obvious omission -- housing. Players have been forced to live without private rooms thus far in the game, but in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ffxiv-patch-1.21/">patch 1.21</a>, <a href="http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/37514">that's going to change</a>. The first version of housing will be rolled out with the next major patch, with a small explanation having just recently been posted to the official site.<br />
<br />
Following the patch, players can acquire a private residence after completing a quest handed out in the inn. These quests can be accepted any time after a player finishes the first installment of the storyline quest, making them rather easy to pick up. When logging out in a private room, players will acquire rest experience to hasten leveling, replacing the previous system of Guardian's Aspect. While <a href="http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/37514">it's a bare-bones implementation</a>, it's a foundation to ensure that the game's major revamp coming in November will have something to build off of -- and there's more promised for the future.<br />

Housing is one of those MMO features that's beloved by some, disliked by others, and sadly not nearly as common as it once was. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Free-Realms/">Free Realms</a></em> has had housing for quite some time, of course, but the development team apparently hasn't felt that player introductions to same have really been up to snuff. So that's why players new and old will be gifted with a new Wilds Condo in the near future, a slice of housing that should give a much better idea of how fun the system can be.<br />

Players will get a lawn, more options to decorate, and more vertical space in the front yard to build a truly impressive dwelling. Looking for a new place to call home in the world of Norrath? <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment</a> has a couple of new prestige houses on the way that offer plenty of space and plenty of scenic views.<br />

First up is the Storm Tower Isle, an evil-themed island refuge with a Tower of Bone replica and a bunch of pristine beach, salt spray, and stormy atmospherics. Next is the Secluded Sanctum, and long-time <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> players will recognize it as a portion of Sullon Zek's dungeon. SOE left the canopy beds and raised dais in place, and we can't wait to see what some of Norrath's premier interior decorators do with the place. Massively went gaga for quirky Flash-based sandbox MMO <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Glitch/">Glitch</a></em> when it launched last fall, so we were dismayed when it <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/30/glitch-unlaunches-to-add-new-features/">unlaunched</a> just a few short months later. Who unlaunches a game? <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Tiny-Speck/">Tiny Speck</a>, that's who. The company sent the game back into beta for systems overhauls, including more robust housing, as Tiny Speck's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/02/mmobility-tiny-speck-explains-glitchs-big-unlaunching/">Stewart Butterfield told us</a> back in December.<br />
<br />
This week, in a question-and-answer session on the official forums, Butterfield explains just how the new housing system will work. For starters, <em>everyone</em> will now begin the game as a homeowner. Existing players will be transitioned from their current, static homes into new base models, which can be upgraded (horizontally, vertically, and thematically) as players invest Imagination and undertake crafting projects. Players will even decide which types of gardens and animal pens will surround their abodes.<br />

Who doesn't love checking out a game's new content? I love it, for sure. So I was more than happy to sit down and ride along with the developers of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/fiesta-online/"><em>Fiesta</em></a> as they showed off their new expansion, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/07/outspark-announces-fiesta-online-expansion-expedition-to-adeali/"><em>Expedition to Adealia</em></a>. The tour wasn't all rainbows and kittens, that's for sure. I found myself surrounded by towering monsters, crazy children brandishing giant knives, and massive, fire-breathing boss-monsters. It was fun, but I had no idea this cute Anime title could be so <em>hardcore</em>!<br />
<br />
Luckily for me, my hosts had the ability to heal or resurrect me when needed. I didn't do too shabbily, though, and I shot arrows like bullets, bringing down every mighty beast I came across. It was fun, yes, but a real <em>slaughter</em>. Well, for the monsters at least.<br />

If you're into player housing, you'll want to have a look at the latest closed beta test footage from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/archeage"><em>ArcheAge</em></a>. The clip was recorded by Korean players in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/xl-games">XLGAMES</a>' ongoing CBT4 testing phase, and it shows off a whopping 34 minutes of housing-related shenanigans.<br />
<br />
The really interesting bits begin around the 28-minute mark, as we get to see a pretty good demonstration of the game's interior decoration mechanics. Mmm... smell that? It's the smell of a fresh new year, that is! Rolled right off the factory floor with no dings, the warranty still intact, and a tank full of gas and dreams. Makes one want to abandon the routine and head out onto the open road, does it not?<br />
<br />
I'm one of those old fuddy-duddys who actually does New Year's resolutions, whether or not I'm actually capable of keeping them. I think it's important to try to better oneself and keep reaching for higher goals and standards, and if a new year is a convenient excuse to get my butt in gear, then I'm not complaining.<br />
<br />
So right now I'm staring at a field of endless potential for <a href="http://www.lotro.com/"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> in 2012. I've actually been giving it a lot of thought -- what do I want out of this year? As <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>LotRO</em></a> heads toward its fifth anniversary, is there really anything new left that I haven't experienced? And what the heck am I going to write about for 52 more weeks?<br />

Never fear because the more I pondered, the more I realized that there's plenty of content yet to plunder (plus, of course, whatever <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Turbine/">Turbine</a> has up its sleeves for the year). If you are perusing this column, chances are you are a fan of virtual worlds and the sandbox genre. Join the club! (Dues will be due on the third Tuesday.) The aspect that compels many aficionados to delve into a game is the ability to make an impact on the world in some small respect instead of making them into Hive Member 1593072 running a static, predetermined gauntlet. How that impact is accomplished, however, varies; there are multiple features that can facilitate it, and which ones are considered most important depends on the player.<br />

With the loss of one of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/16/some-assembly-required-one-last-jump-to-lightspeed/">best sandbox games</a> just last month, some players may be feeling a void. Others still are looking/hoping for the "ultimate" sandbox that contains nearly every virtual world feature. Certainly, there are some <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/16/some-assembly-required-diving-into-details-of-origins-of-malu/">upcoming games</a> that make some drool-worthy promises, but what about playing something now? There are actually games out on the market that have at least one aspect of the genre, if not more.<br />

Where in the Seraphim Lords did the year go? Daevas aren't the only ones who fly; time certainly has one powerful set of wings (though I haven't quite determined whether they are light or dark)! It's a bit hard for me to believe that a full year has come and gone. Yet even as I doubt, a cursory glance back over the past 12 months shows me I didn't Rip Van Winkle the time away.<br />

In fact, much has transpired in <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/"><em>Aion</em></a> since 2011 rolled in. Hobbits love making lists, don't they? In The Fellowship of the Ring, Bilbo had a lengthy list of friends and relatives to invite to his eleventy-first birthday party, and he didn't have the luxury of Facebook to help him out. I love lists as well, although I try to save most of that for my Perfect Ten column.<br />
<br />
At the beginning of the year, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/14/the-road-to-mordor-my-wish-list-for-2011/">I sat down and drafted up a "wish list"</a> for <a href="http://www.lotro.com/"><em>Lord of the Rings Online's </em></a>2011 year, populating it with 11 changes and additions I was hoping to see by now. To my surprise, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Turbine/">Turbine</a> actually pulled off quite a few items on the list, and I thought it'd be a good idea to go back and examine which of my goals the team met and which remain elusive.<br />
<br />
Also, since 2012 kicks off tomorrow, I'll look forward as well and draft up a dozen -- yes, one more over the year before -- wish list items that I'd love to see come true in the new year. It's my column; I can cry if I want to, after all. "Ask me anything." That's a dangerous command for anyone to issue, nevermind the community manager of the hottest new MMO on the block. Yet that's just what <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/stephen-reid">Stephen Reid</a> said today to the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> community on <a href="http://www.reddit.com/r/swtor/comments/nty9d/im_stephen_reid_senior_community_manager_for_star/">Reddit</a>, and the length of questions and answers would make for a mini-novel if packaged as such.<br />
<br />
While Reid certainly hedges on issues that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare</a> is not quite ready to address, he doesn't shy away from direct answers when applicable. The compiled Reddit thread lists dozens and dozens of Q&amp;As, including the much-asked-for guild housing ("on the list for future development"), the ability delay issue ("we'll talk about it publicly soon"), and an upgraded Galactic Trade Network ("improvements will come to the GTN in time, definitely").<br />
<br />
In response to the request for non-mechanical (read: animal) mounts, Reid said, "Maybe -- it's a technical challenge, I've been told." He's most excited about the upcoming legacy system reveals, but he's not allowed to talk on it just yet.<br />
<br />
Amidst the probing questions of the newly launched title is a personal query about what it's like for him to be at the helm of <em>SWTOR </em>community management. "What's it like?" Reid responded. "Bewildering and overwhelming and exciting and demanding, all at once, all day long (and often into the night). I had some idea what I was getting into, but it was bigger than expected. Aren't I thoughtful? As my present to you, I am going to help banish those <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/12/wings-over-atreia-solorius-medley/">Solorius tunes</a> that got stuck in your head a couple of weeks ago. How shall I accomplish this? No, not with a home-delivery amateur lobotomy or a plethora of psychotropics (though these could alternately be helpful I concede) but by replacing them of course! Yes, let's round out the season with a rousing rendition of The Twelve Days of Solorius.<br />

Community was one of many things that set <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-galaxies"><em>Star Wars: Galaxies</em></a> apart from your average MMO, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment's</a> Tony "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tony-tyson">Teesquared</a>" Tyson took a moment to thank the game's faithful in what serves as the final <a href="http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/index.vm">producer's letter</a> for the shuttered sandbox title.<br />
<br />
Tyson touches on several highlights including housing, crafting, entertaining, and space-sim mechanics that were unique to <em>SWG</em>, and he ultimately concludes that the game "was, and will always be, a meaningful and memorable part of my life, an experience I'll treasure and share with anyone who wants to hear a good story."<br />
<br />

There's a growing number of great kid-friendly MMOs available, and one that I've been meaning to check out for a while now is <a href="https://www.heroup.com/"><em>Super Hero Squad Online</em></a>. The game has only been out for eight months, yet in that short time, it's reached over a million registered users and added lots of new content and characters.<br />

I've spent some time in the game, along with my two young testers, to find out what the buzz is all about. We formed up a squad and set off to check out missions, the card game, our headquarters, and the opportunities for exploration out in the world, and our first impressions are found below. The sunsetting of <em><a href="http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/players/index.vm">Star Wars Galaxies</a></em>. Beyond the obvious, that statement holds more meaning for me, something deeper and more personal. See, throughout my years in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-galaxies">SWG</a>,</em> I would often stop whatever I was doing just to sit and watch the Tatooine suns set. Honestly. Just a simple act of sitting upon the plateau -- sometimes alone, sometimes with friends -- quietly watching one of the universe's greatest pleasures inside an MMO. It was amazing to me how vibrant this galaxy was, filled with so many little details that breathed life into it in a way that I think is still unmatched. Details such as sunsets made the world real, but what really made it "home" was the housing.<br />
<br />
Few, if any, games can claim the mastery of housing that <em>Galaxies</em> attained. Quite frankly, it is still the standard by which I measure housing. And there is almost no way to sum it up and do it justice in one short article. Despite this challenge, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/some-assembly-required/">Some Assembly Required</a> dedicates this 12th issue to immortalizing (and hopefully prodding future developers to emulate) one of the greatest housing systems ever and highlighting the very thing that made this great feature phenomenal: incredible player ingenuity and creativity.<br />

In exactly one month, the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Wars-Galaxies/">Star Wars Galaxies</a></em> servers will be shut down forever, but that doesn't mean your creations have to be sunsetted along with them. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/MJ-Guthrie/">MJ Guthrie</a>, the co-author of our biweekly sandbox column, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Some-Assembly-Required/">Some Assembly Required</a>, is hoping to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/14/some-assembly-required-quest-building-with-swgs-chronicles/">immortalize</a> the niftiest player-decorated <em>SWG</em> houses, but she needs your help to do it.<br />

Welcome to another installment of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/A-Mild-Mannered-Reporter/">A Mild-Mannered Reporter</a>, where you've all stumbled into my trap. Yes, you thought that I was going to have a column discussing another villain group due to the end of the last column, but no. Today might not quite be the anniversary of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/City-of-Villains/">City of Villains</a></em>, but it's close enough for our purposes to look back at the impact that the first expansion had on...<br />

Wait, what? You mean <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/27/a-mild-mannered-reporter-five-years-of-scum-and-villainy/">I already did that</a>? Foiled again!<br />
<br />
Of course, it's not really a surprise. It's hard to picture a world without the villains running around, even if the world conspires to give them a bad name -- not to mention the bad name they give themselves. Oh, if only it were that simple! And quick. 'Cause I got my hiking boots on and am raring to go. Heck, I will even wade through rivers of enemy blood to get me some housing! Now you all know what kind of statement that is coming from PvP-challenged me. Sadly, there is still a long wait ahead as there is no real official word on the release of 3.0 and its accompanying features. To be honest, with my all-too-obvious love of housing, I am not entirely sure that the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/18/aions-3-0-update-features-extensive-housing-mechanics-mounts/">information that trickled out</a> of Korea this past week was more exciting... or painful. TEASE!!<br />
<br />
Either way, there is no ignoring the fact that the tantalizing information has come, posted front and center on the <a href="http://power.plaync.co.kr/aion/%EC%A3%BC%ED%83%9D">Korean Powerwiki</a> for all to see. Thanks to some kind <a href="http://9kohorta.com/blog/in-english/aion-3-0-housing/">translating</a>, those of us not fluent in Korean can also get a glimpse at what <a href="http://us.ncsoft.com/en/">NCsoft</a> has in store for us. Truly, I think that it is only fitting that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/17/wings-over-atreia-socket-this/">last week's</a> focus on a major frustration is followed up by something many are actually looking forward to! In all, some of the information revealed is exciting, some is pleasantly surprising, and some is even disappointing,<br />

Remember that really slick <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PAM0wr7cZ8">vision</a>" trailer that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> released in November of 2009? If you're a fan of the Daeva-centric fantasy MMO you've probably seen the nine-minute clip floating around the intarwebs (and marveled at its graphical upgrades, mounts, player housing, and various bells and whistles).<br />
<br />
While NCsoft has already implemented some of the visual tweaks in a previous patch, the housing and mounts have remained conspicuously absent. Now, though, new info leaking out of Korea confirms that the features (and the rest of <em>Aion</em> 3.0) are indeed on the way. Housing will be available at level 21 and will boast many different styles, customizable interiors and exteriors (including color and elevation), functional wardrobes, and a variety of furniture items that will be produced by crafters.<br />
<br />
Mounts will come in both flying and ground-based flavors, and will need to be hatched from eggs like most of <em>Aion's</em> other pets. In addition, the level cap has been raised to level 60, and new maps and dungeons have been introduced to keep players entertained on the way to the top. When <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a> announced that <a href="http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/players/index.vm"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a> would be sunsetted by the end of the year, many players despaired. They gave up. They saw their long years (eight years!) of play turn to dust. But others looked on the impending closure as incentive to do all those things they'd been putting off, all the activities they just hadn't gotten around to. There hadn't been time. The game is too big for anyone to do it all.<br />
<br />
And that's precisely why <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Wars-Galaxies/">Star Wars Galaxies</a></em> is a legend among sandbox fans despite the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/NGE/">NGE</a> disaster. It's a living museum of great MMO ideas from the past, of player-driven economies, of open-world housing, of high-end, game-supported roleplay, of roaming in a game that lets you dictate the terms of your play. It's a rare relic you should see in the flesh, today, right now, before it's gone. You can pick up a weapon and fight in any MMO (excepting <em><a href="http://www.atitd.com/">A Tale in the Desert</a></em>, that is), but there are so many things you can do in <em>Star Wars Galaxies</em> that you can't do anywhere else with the same level of immersion. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eden-eternal"><em>Eden Eternal's</em></a> feature list just got a bit longer, as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aeria-games">Aeria Games</a> has released a new trailer showing off the game's player housing implementation. The new content is scheduled to go live sometime in early October, according to the latest Aeria press release.<br />
<br />
The video shows a good amount of customization, and player characters can be seen placing a variety of objects inside a spacious interior as well as rotating said objects. Everything from beds to bookshelves to wall hangings will be obtainable via the game's item shop and from various in-game quests. Finally, Aeria is allowing other players to visit your personal house, and doing so will reward both parties with "various status boosts."<br />

	<a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/aeria-games">Aeria Games</a> announced in a press release today that <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/eden-eternal"><em>Eden Eternal</em></a> will be on the receiving end of a rather large content update sometime in early October. What gives this update such heft? Well, for starters there's the new Templar class, plus a level cap raise, and oh yeah, player housing.<br />
	<br />
	If five new levels, a new class, and houses aren't enough for you, get this: You can throw parties! In your house! House parties! Anyway, also included in the update are a variety of high-level areas, alpaca coins (which can be found in high-level zones and redeemed for various prizes), and a new pirate invasion event! Shiver me timbers and all that, matey. To get in on the swashbuckling, house-partying fun, just head on over to <em>Eden Eternal</em>'s official site and sign up.<br />
