With the abundance of bugs and glitches in Star Wars: The Old Republic, fans are looking to James Ohlen's promise of weekly patches to shore up the faults. Yesterday we saw patch 1.0.2 go live with some -- but certainly not all -- of these fixes, as well as an increase in the PvP lockbox rewards and allowing players to emote while mounted.

In addition to yesterday's patch, today BioWare plans to roll out an emergency fix to address a few important issues: players crashing to desktop at character select, a problem with the chat channels in which they would stop functioning for some people, and the now-infamous /getdown bug.

PvP Lead Gabe Amatangelo also emerged from the BioWare fortress to chat about plans for the future of the game's PvP combat. According to Amatangelo, the team is working on level 50 brackets for warzones, vastly improving open world PvP on Ilum, a new same-faction vs. same-faction warzone, team vs. team queuing, ranked warzone matches, and more. He says that to date, over a million warzone matches have been played, with 39% of those matches played being Huttball and the Empire winning 53% of every match fought.
SWTOR goes bug hunting with 1.0.2 and prognosticates PvP improvements originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 05 Jan 2012 09:00:00 EST. While behind-the-scenes logistical tweaks may not get the glory that other news does, they can and do have a huge impact on the game. This looks to be the case with EverQuest, which has undergone "substantial server side changes" to allow the team to update the game more efficiently.

The bottom line is that now Sony Online Entertainment can apply EverQuest updates much more quickly than before while reducing the potential for issues to pop up during file transfers. As a result, players should be seeing reduced downtime in the future during these updates.

The changes have also expanded the team's ability to apply hotfixes on the servers without bringing them down for patches: "While we still aren't able to hotfix everything, the hope is this will reduce the number of times we have to bring the servers down between our regular monthly updates."
Dungeons and Dragons Online Update 5 has been out for a while now, and it came on the scene to mixed reviews. Some players were unhappy about the combat changes, bugs here and there caused problems, and there were a couple of hotfixes in the first few days.

The new adventure pack and guild renown system balanced it out nicely, though. In spite of continued glitches they were viewed overall as a great addition to the game. We were curious about several aspects of the update and what Turbine has planned for the immediate future, so we posed a few questions to Executive Producer Fernando Paiz.

Follow along after the jump to see what he had to say about DDO's Update 5.
Continue reading DDO Update 5: Massively's interview with Fernando Paiz

DDO Update 5: Massively's interview with Fernando Paiz originally appeared on Massively on Mon, 12 Jul 2010 13:00:00 EST.

Dungeons and Dragons Online's latest update "Rise of the Guilds," had a huge emphasis on airships, airship amenities, and the guild renown system. It wasn't the only thing coming in the update by any means, but it was unarguably the feature most strongly promoted by Turbine.

Update 5 went live yesterday, and many players jumped in to begin earning renown for their guilds right away. Unfortunately, it didn't last very long. The guild renown system had some underlying issues that caused it to be completely shut down after only a few hours. It was a frustrating situation for both players and Turbine staff, as guild renown is the underpinning of the entire airship system and all the amenities that go along with it.

Just a short while ago, Meghan "Patience" Rodberg posted an update on the DDO forums: "We are currently testing a hotfix to Update 5 that will restore the Black Abbot raid and the ability to earn guild renown. The DDO Game Servers are tentatively scheduled to be brought down on Tuesday, June 29 from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM Eastern (-4 GMT) to deploy the hotfix. We'll update this message with any changes to the schedule. Lamannia will remain up and available during the downtime. Thanks for your patience!"

Keep an eye on the forum thread for any updates, and hopefully players will be earning renown and buying airships in no time.
Hotfix coming to Dungeons and Dragons Online Update 5 originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 29 Jun 2010 11:30:00 EST. Finding out that you have cancer of any variety is always a bombshell, and for Warhammer Online player Trish, it became doubly difficult as she discovered that her breast cancer returned as of April this year. Feeling the urge to support Trish -- who goes by several variations on the word "Tink" in WAR -- her friends, guild and the surrounding Badlands server community created a "Pink for Tink" movement to raise awareness and offer encouragement. This eventually led to the creation of a pink-themed guild specifically for this cause, with several blogs which have been reporting on its growth.

As Tink's husband wrote on their blog, "One sort of expects close friends and family to express support, but to have strangers (including your "enemies") stand behind you in solidarity is touching in a very different way."

This past Tuesday, Mythic lent their support by adding a couple "very special dye vendors" into the game: Alda Tinkengruber (Order) and Grobbik Bigtink (Destruction). These vendors are selling "Slaneesh Pink Dye" and "Light Purple Dye" for a limited time for players who want to support Tink, enjoy the unusual shades, or both.

Did your goals for Lord of the Rings Online's Spring Festival include getting yourself a spiffy horse? Well, you're going to have to wait just a little while in order to get your hands on one. How long? We don't know yet. What we do know is that the vendor has been removed entirely, thus preventing players from even gazing longingly at the listing in the menu. As Sapience explained on the forums, the issue wasn't really the vendor so much as the horse itself.

To wit: the way the game is handling mounts is being changed. As a result, they need to change the item, remove the item from the vendor's list, or remove the vendor entirely until the issue is resolved. However, the former two changes require a patch, and the issue is kind of small for an entire patch -- not to mention that it's the sort of fix more easily rolled into a larger patch. While it's bad news for Lord of the Rings Online players, it's at least nice to get a quick and clear explanation on why the vendor got yanked.
The only major complaint about the new system was that prices seemed extremely expensive. Some players on the forums even claimed they were leveling out of a tier before they were able to afford the gear for that tier. Rather than rush to immediately drop prices, Mythic stated they would monitor the new system and adjust prices accordingly.

We think it's pretty safe to say that most subscribers will be letting out a big "Woot!" for this news. The amount of medallions required for quartermaster sets has been reduced by up to 50%. Some set items are now much cheaper while the more rare pieces of the set are only slightly cheaper. Officer medallions now drop off players rank 30 and above. Invader city gear can now be earned more quickly. Finally, the repeatable chain quests from war camps and defense of keep and BO now reward tokens.
The market crashes... for WAR's token system originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 14 May 2009 16:00:00 EST. A handful of RVR-related problems were also quashed, most notably the lack of Healer NPCs in Kadrin Valley warcamp, and some missing set items in Tier 3 Gold Keep bags.

Further tinkering with client performance and stability made it into this hot fix as well, with a focus on "periods of intense combat" -- we'll have to see how that one pans out. However, arguably the best part of the patch is one of the simplest changes -- WAR's EULA will now only need to be agreed to when changes are made to it. In the wake of Warhammer Online's launch, Mythic have kept up a stream of information. Today we have Destin Bales, the Live Producer, giving us a rundown of that quintessential WAR ejaculation, Waaagh! 'It's an enthusiastic battle cry, challenging both our enemies on the battlefield and ourselves in the office. It's a howl of frustration when at the last moment some piece of code unexpectedly breaks. It's the sound of a rampaging horde of developers rushing to get to the pizza on a night we have to burn the midnight oil to make sure an update to the game is fully tested and ready to go. It's a sort of unofficial slogan we proudly wear on green t-shirts. Oh, and yeah, apparently some Orcs said it once.'

Destin also drops some intriguing hints about easter eggs, and stuff in game that may as yet remain undiscovered. WAR is notable for being especially rewarding to the 'explorer' kind of player, those who like to roam around for themselves and uncover little oddments of lore. We were drawn to the comment about altars in the Lair of Xaphan, which itself is apparently elusive. 'It might seem odd at first that they don't do anything when you interact with them. Well, that's probably because you haven't found them all yet.' If any of our readers have found them all and can tell us what Destin's hinting at, then please do let us know!

Along with the Dev blog, there have been the anticipated hotfix notes, summarized under the cut.

As we reported the other day, the first week of Warhammer Online's live service was filled with hotfixes and minor patches. On Friday the WAR Herald looked back at the first week of these patches to ensure that players are kept up-to-date on how the game is changing. It's encouraging to see that the company is on top of issues like the disappearing weapons, monsters spawning in the cities, and other serious issues. Here are some of the more interesting notes:

A few Magus abilities were adversely affecting friendly players. These have been fixed.

Lady Kreuger now has the top of her head back.

Amethyst Wizards will no longer spawn naked.

Fixed a terrain exploit in the Phoenix Gate scenario.

Adjusted loot drops for some monsters that were dropping items of the incorrect level.

Corrected an issue that was improperly buffing players on Open RvR servers with the "Bolster" buff used on Core ruleset servers.

However, rather than this list being full of stealth nerfs, it just looks like a lot of things broke in the latest update. Some of the bigger concerns have been: the abusing of combos now that you can cancel them out and still do damage (leading to no cooldowns on stuns, knockbacks, etc.); and players sometimes becoming invisible to others.

Thankfully, Funcom has been on the ball with these two larger issues and have issued a hotfix to the live servers. This is all that the hotfix purports to do though, so read through the undocumented patch changes list on the forums to see what else was introduced. There's at least one good thing on the list, too -- specific crafting merchants can now be found in guild cities.
Not-in-the-notes for AoC's 17th July patch: invisible hotfix edition originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 18 Jul 2008 07:00:00 EST. Well, it took quite a bit of concerted bitching, but it looks like the worst of the effects from Tabula Rasa's patch 1.5 have been addressed. A hotfix went live this morning which corrected the issues people were having with the resolution automatically resizing to 1158x864 every time the client was restarted. The patch notes say that some players may still experience problems if they run the game full screen at resolutions of 1280x960, but I got the game running silky smooth on my GeForce 7600 at 1440x900, so it's probably a driver issue affecting very specific cards. If anything, I've actually noticed a performance increase in graphic-intensive outdoor areas, so this patch is quite welcome indeed.

Also coming as part of the hotfix is a respec for the Spy class, whose abilities underwent a number of changes in patch 1.5. This change is perhaps the stranger of the problems fixed. It was not a coding or optimization error, as with the resolution problem, but simply a lack of foresight on the developer's part. One wonders how they didn't initially foresee the need for a respec, but were so quickly able to amend their position once the patch went live? It's very strange, but hey, kudos to them for seeing the light.
Tabula Rasa resolution hotfix live originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 28 Feb 2008 16:00:00 EST. With Tabula Rasa already on the ropes with recent reports of financial failure, the last thing the TR community wanted or needed to have to deal with was the awfully-implemented patch 1.5 that rolled out onto live servers yesterday. Pushed out of testing a scant five days after it was revealed on the public test server, the patch was bugged by resolution issues and big changes to the Spy class weren't accompanied by a respec to make them worth the trouble. Morale among the AFS-faithful was not terribly high this time yesterday morning.

Evidently, the developers actually paid notice and took a rare opportunity to break their usual Monday/Friday announcement schedule to address these concerns. They're working on a hotfix for the resolution problem, and suggest in the meantime that players run the game in windowed mode. Not that doing so addresses the fact that the resolution resets every time you load the game, but at least it doesn't crash. They've also revealed that part of their plan in patch 1.6 is to make respecs a more readily available resource. Instead of the crummy awards players currently get for defending and attacking CPs, players will soon be able to collect talent and attribute respec credits for their trouble instead. It's a good idea, and enough of a distraction that most of the doom and gloom has abated, albeit temporarily.
On Tabula Rasa respecs and resolutions originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 27 Feb 2008 09:00:00 EST. It also means that the next major content update Book 12 won't be out this month, but with no release date being set yet, this was to be expected.
Last scheduled downtime this year for LotRO originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 11 Dec 2007 21:30:00 EST. Destination Games threw a quick notice on their website last night saying that they had been made aware of, and were currently working on a fix for, what has become a very troublesome bug in their seminal MMO release, Tabula Rasa. The bug, in the wording of the release, made it such that, "If you try to switch weapons immediately after firing, your weapon will remain the same. Instead you have to wait a sec or two, then try to switch again." That's putting a bit of a sugar-coating on the bug, which has actually been much more of a nuisance than their release lets on.

One of Tabula Rasa's most endearing gameplay features is that it's combat requires quick, almost shooter-like speed and precision in order to dispatch with enemies as efficiently as possible. Soldier classes need to be able to move between their equipped weapons smoothly, as different weapon types serve very specific purposes in combat, and moving between them mid-battle is absolutely key to taking on large, mixed groups of enemies. Specialists too need to be able to move between their repair and healing tools at will, in order to maximize their utility at keeping parties alive.

According to the release, it should be fixed as of this morning's maintenance. This bug has thrown a wrench in the way the game has played the last two days since the patch, so we're happy to see them getting on top of it ASAP.
Weapon swap glitch in TR to get hotfix soon originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 01 Dec 2007 10:00:00 EST.
