Development studio <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> has been in the news a lot this year with their ambitious MMOFPS project codenamed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514/"><em>Dust 514</em></a>. When it's released, <em>Dust</em> will actually tie into the studio's current MMO <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>. <em>Dust</em> players will hire themselves out to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> players as mercenaries, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/23/eve-evolved-dust-in-the-wind/">their combined aim being to dominate territories on a planet's surface</a>. The first steps toward this unique integration of two MMOs in the same concurrent universe came with <em>EVE Online</em>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dominion/"><em>Dominion</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tyrannis/"><em>Tyrannis</em></a> expansions. <em>Dominion</em> gave <em>EVE</em> players a new Sovereignty framework, which will later be adapted to include planets as strategic points of interest. In the recent <em>Tyrannis</em> expansion, the planets of <em>EVE</em> began producing resources worthy of domination, ensuring that players will fight over them once it becomes possible.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/a-dust-514-novel-may-be-in-the-works/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Dust 514 novel may be in the works</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/a-dust-514-novel-may-be-in-the-works/">A Dust 514 novel may be in the works</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 16:00:00 EST. Storyline is an important part of any MMO and <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is no exception. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/05/eve-evolved-storytelling-in-eve-online/">New Eden is steeped in story-telling</a>, from the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/">regularly released fictional chronicles</a> to the countless blogs, battle reports <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/04/goonswarm-alliance-disbanded-in-eve-online-political-drama/">and dramatic events</a> recorded by players. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> is a game that lends itself very well to creating immersive stories, videos and other creative efforts. Back in June of 2008, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games/"><em>CCP</em></a> commissioned author Tony Gonzales to write a novel set in the <em>EVE</em> universe. The novel, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/13/the-empyrean-age-qanda-with-author-tony-gonzales/">titled "Empyrean Age,"</a> came at the same time as the expansion of the same name and gave some background story for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/16/eve-evolved-faction-warfare-unleashed/">faction warfare</a>. June 2009 brought the announcement that CCP's own fiction-writer Hjalti Dan&iacute;elsson had begun work on a second <em>EVE</em> novel entitled "EVE: The Burning Life." Hjalti is better known as CCP Abraxis, the pen behind most of the <em>EVE</em> chronicles and <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=1289132">the current driving force</a> behind the game's storyline.<br /><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/28/new-eve-online-novel-the-burning-life-released/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New EVE Online novel "The Burning Life" released</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/28/new-eve-online-novel-the-burning-life-released/">New EVE Online novel "The Burning Life" released</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 28 Mar 2010 12:00:00 EST. Now <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> have made video of some of the Fanfest panels, presentations, or general madness available on <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/ccpgames">their YouTube page</a> as well. Of course there's <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNhPig8inEY">the main keynote</a> that included <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a> info and gameplay footage, but the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFEi2aIvsFA">CCP Panel</a> gave players in attendance the opportunity to ask the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> developers whatever they felt like. <br /><br />The responses from the devs explain quite a bit about the choices <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> has made with both <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> and <em>DUST 514</em>, and there are some hints of what's to come. More than anything, it's interesting to see this kind of direct interaction between the players and the people who create the game. <em>(Obligatory disclaimer: The CCP Panel video is a bit NSFW with the language in parts, but if you're watching something like this on the job... you probably don't care.)</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/08/eve-fanfest-2009-videos-are-up/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Fanfest 2009 videos are up</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/08/eve-fanfest-2009-videos-are-up/">EVE Fanfest 2009 videos are up</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 08 Oct 2009 19:00:00 EST. They join together or band against their rivals in alliance warfare, drug cartels, pirate organizations, and industrial powerhouses. The complex interplay of involvements that allow the game's players to establish and destroy invariably triggers cascades of drama. This is the point of the sandbox design of the game, what you do in New Eden affects other players on some level. <br /><br />For some players, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> is just about their interactions with one another and the fiction underpinning of the game is of marginal concern. While not all players choose to immerse themselves in the game's backstory, the setting is actually quite rich -- built on roughly six years' worth of lore <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/">fleshed out in the Chronicles</a>, short stories that provide snapshots of the various levels of activity in New Eden.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/28/eve-online-novel-the-burning-life-to-focus-on-pirate-factions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online novel The Burning Life to focus on pirate factions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/28/eve-online-novel-the-burning-life-to-focus-on-pirate-factions/">EVE Online novel The Burning Life to focus on pirate factions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 28 Jul 2009 17:00:00 EST. But sci-fi lends itself well to novelization as well, and in the MMO scene as it exists today, <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is a prime example. The game's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">far-future setting of New Eden</a> is known for its sweeping warfare between vast empires, republics, and federations, but the game's lore has also shown there's a lot happening on a much smaller level. <br /><br />That sweeping warfare was the focus of the first <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> novel, <em>The Empyrean Age</em> written by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tony-gonzales">Tony Gonzales</a>, and this was tied in with the storyline events leading up to all-out war between the game's races. However, <em>EVE</em>'s creators <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> will be showing a different side to the game with the second novel, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-burning-life"><em>The Burning Life</em></a>, written by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hjalti-danielsson">Hjalti Danielsson</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/13/the-challenges-of-storytelling-in-eve-onlines-player-driven-set/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The challenges of storytelling in EVE Online's player-driven setting</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/13/the-challenges-of-storytelling-in-eve-onlines-player-driven-set/">The challenges of storytelling in EVE Online's player-driven setting</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 13 Jul 2009 15:00:00 EST. The sci-fi novel is written by Hjalti Dan&iacute;elsson (aka <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-abraxas">CCP Abraxas</a>) who has written many of the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/"><em>EVE</em> Chronicles</a> -- short, gritty tales that show readers the various facets of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">life in New Eden</a>. <br /><br />The Chronicles have been a way of driving the game's lore forward for years, so we're wondering what to expect from The Burning Life. Could it possibly be tied in with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/09/ccp-games-to-revamp-the-lore-of-eve-online/">new directions that CCP Games wants to take</a> with <em>EVE</em>'s lore? <br /><br />At this point we don't know have much information about the novel, or whether it will be tied in with an upcoming expansion as the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/empyrean-age"><em>Empyrean Age</em></a> novel by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tony-gonzales">Tony Gonzales</a> was in 2008. <br /><br />There are <a href="http://media.us.macmillan.com/video/olmk/fall09/Tor-Fall-09-1.pdf">paperback release dates listed for 2009</a> in North America (Tor) and 2010 in Europe (Gollancz).<br /><br /><a href="http://twitter.com/galen_druid">[Via Ga'len</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/04/new-eve-online-novel-the-burning-life-is-on-the-way/">New EVE Online novel "The Burning Life" is on the way</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 16:00:00 EST.
