	Welcome to <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em>'s</a> Overlook Motel, where the sheets are clean, the service is friendly, and there's an ominous doorway to Hell in every room. Such is the beginning of the second instanced dungeon of <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/funcom">Funcom's</a> upcoming horror-fantasy MMO, which sees players descending deep into the bowels of the underworld to put an end to a raging demonic war that's causing Hell to leak through to the real world.<br />
	<br />
	I had the pleasure of joining Funcom's Tor Andersen on a guided tour of Hell Raised, the first in a series of three dungeons that take place in the fiery depths, and boy did I ever have a hell of a time (sorry). If you're interested in finding out what awaits players of <em>The Secret World</em> in the depths of Hades itself, follow along with me as I give you the ins-and-outs of surviving a confrontation in the midst of an infernal warzone.</div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/raising-hell-in-the-secret-worlds-hell-raised-instance/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Raising hell in The Secret World's Hell Raised instance</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/raising-hell-in-the-secret-worlds-hell-raised-instance/">Raising hell in The Secret World's Hell Raised instance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 May 2012 10:00:00 EST. <a href="http://riftgame.com"><em>RIFT</em></a> fans wracked their brains trying to decipher the cryptic message on the forums a few weeks ago, and it turned out they were right: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rift/"><em>RIFT</em></a> is on the verge of seeing the arrival of three faction PvP, and the game took its first step toward that with a test session on PTS last week.<br />
<br />
If you missed it, take heart because this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Enter-at-your-own-RIFT/">Enter at Your Own Rift</a> gives a recap of the event and a beginning look at how <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Conquest/">Conquest</a> plays out. You haven't steered me wrong. At least, not yet.<br />
<br />
I am pretty sure there is that nagging worry at the back of the Massively writers' minds when they give themselves over to the masses for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure">Choose My Adventure</a>. Sure, there is an element of mystery and excitement, but what if... just what if the majority manifests an evil streak and sends you careening over an embankment to your virtual doom? Or banishes you to tasks that would make you want to lobotomize yourself with your mouse -- things like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/02/choose-my-adventure-taking-a-right-at-paragon-city/">run Death From Below repeatedly</a>? Thankfully, you all spared me from such torture. And with this week's tour of the Mission Architect system in <em><a href="http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/index.php">City of Heroes</a></em>, you definitely steered me right -- this is my favorite aspect of the game yet!<br />
<br />
I am glad to say that my trust in you all has not been unfounded, and I will speak on your behalf to the others. The fact is, I have enjoyed our little road trip immensely and am sad it must come to an end. So let's take one last cruise through <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes/"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> together before you drive off into the sunset with Eliot.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/">CMA: City of Heroes</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/#5039111"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/19-1337693765_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/#5039107"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/15-1337693759_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/#5039098"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/6-1337693746_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/#5039105"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/13-1337693756_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/#5039109"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/17-1337693762_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/choose-my-adventure-the-last-mile/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure: The last mile</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/choose-my-adventure-the-last-mile/">Choose My Adventure: The last mile</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 May 2012 15:00:00 EST. Here I am making myself crazy once again. Why? Why do I insist on visiting games that I know will provoke issues both physical and mental? I guess it's because lately I have been fascinated with MUDs, or multi-user-dungeons. They are better described as text-based MMOs or choose-your-own-adventure books written with thousands of other players. It's a fascinating concept, especially when you consider how dissimilar it is to today's modern, easy-to-play offerings. The ancient design of the MUD now feels fresh, so much so that I have decided to dedicate a future article about the possibility of MUDs' viability in today's three-dimensional world.<br />
<br />
I have found some good and some very bad over the last several weeks. I've also stumbled across brand-new versions of the migraines that often bother me when I concentrate way, way too hard on PC text. I have to admit that my issues do not seem that common, but it is important to look at a game from all angles, even from the angle of someone who has specific issues. <a href="http://www.bat.org/"><em>BatMUD</em></a> has tested my patience over the last few weeks and several hours. It's also shown me some wonderful adventure and sparked my imagination.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/20/rise-and-shiny-batmud/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny: BatMUD</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/20/rise-and-shiny-batmud/">Rise and Shiny: BatMUD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 20 May 2012 12:00:00 EST. I have to be honest, the Caitian Carrier for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/">Star Trek Online</a></em> kind of makes me want to give the game a shot again. I liked it when I played it before, but I just had no time to play it on top of everything else. But then I think about all the work I'd need to do just to get caught up to normal, and... yeah, that's about the point when my gumption evaporates. Still, though. Carrier.<br />
<br />
In other and far more relevant news, it's time for this week's installment of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Ask-Massively/">Ask Massively</a>, which talks about the cycle of game announcement and subsequent disappointment. (Apropos of the recent beta weekends for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Secret-World/">The Secret World</a></em>, naturally.) You've experienced it, right? That magic moment on any trip of significant length when you've been living and breathing the locale long enough that the place starts to feel more familiar and you settle in, that time when you feel less like a tourist and more like a local. After the last few weeks traveling with you all, I have hit that moment in <a href="http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/index.php"><em>City of Heroes</em></a>. While I still may not be able to tell one inspiration from another by sight, I can find my way around the 'hood and know the skyline when zipping about -- well, at least in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/09/choose-my-adventure-patrolling-the-park">Atlas Park</a>. Oh, and I found a Mexican restaurant! It's almost like a second home now.<br />
<br />
It was upon reaching this comfort zone that <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes/">City of Heroes</a></em> got better for me; this past week has been more fun than the previous ones during this <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure/">Choose My Adventure</a> road trip. (And yes, I'd even call the torture of the expansive <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/02/choose-my-adventure-taking-a-right-at-paragon-city/">character creation</a> fun. Exhausting, but fun!) What transpired this week? Buckle up and step on the gas to see.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/">CMA: City of Heroes</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/#5039111"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/19-1337693765_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/#5039107"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/15-1337693759_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/#5039098"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/6-1337693746_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/#5039105"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/13-1337693756_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/#5039109"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/17-1337693762_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/choose-my-adventure-cruisin-with-the-gang/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure: Cruisin' with the gang in City of Heroes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/choose-my-adventure-cruisin-with-the-gang/">Choose My Adventure: Cruisin' with the gang in City of Heroes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 16 May 2012 17:30:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.darklegends.com/">Dark Legends</a></em>, the new title from mobile MMO king <a href="http://www.spacetimestudios.com/">Spacetime Studios</a>, is already creating a buzz with its liberal use of an energy pool that is sapped as players go through standard gameplay. If this mechanic were packaged any differently and inside a sandbox, it's possible that people would call it "realistic" or "hardcore." Unfortunately, problems set in as soon as players realized that playing the game for hours on end would require some infusion of real-life funds or the ability to kill pretty large chunks of time in non-combat areas.<br />
<br />
I would argue that the gameplay does not have to be designed for marathon gaming sessions. It's very possible that the "casual" part of the game's description <em>actually means</em> "casual." I still had issues with the mechanic; don't get me wrong. But if I was bothered by anything it would be <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Dark-Legends/"><em>Dark Legends'</em></a> lack of borrowing features from <a href="http://pocketlegends.com/"><em>Pocket Legends</em></a>, Spacetime's flagship mobile MMO, which offers actual persistent areas and other MMO staples.<br />
<br />
Of course, it's possible that Spacetime is simply trying something new. Heaven forbid it should attempt a new design!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/13/rise-and-shiny-dark-legends/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny: Dark Legends</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/13/rise-and-shiny-dark-legends/">Rise and Shiny: Dark Legends</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 13 May 2012 12:00:00 EST. <div>
	The real secret to <a href="http://thesecretworld.com/"><em>The Secret World</em></a> is that it's the Matrix (see the above picture from the character creator that resembles <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrie-Anne_Moss">Carrie-Anne Moss</a>).<br />
	<br />
	Actually, the first and most important stop for an MMO gamer is the character creator. When you're in beta, it might not be as important because the character will be tossed away in a few short weeks. However, in the live game, this character will not only be the same one you might see for years to come; it's also a reflection of you as a player. There are some players who insist on playing the ugliest races in the game, while others want the prettiest or the strongest. Personally, I lean toward playing female characters. I'm not sure what that says about me.<br />
	<br />
	The creation of our character says so much about us, so it is extremely important that western RPGs and especially MMORPGs allow us to express ourselves. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em></a>'s character creator has its good elements and its bad, but the most important part is how much <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom</a>'s version allows us to express our personalities.</div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/11/hands-on-with-the-secret-world-character-creator/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hands-on with The Secret World character creator</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/11/hands-on-with-the-secret-world-character-creator/">Hands-on with The Secret World character creator</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 11 May 2012 11:00:00 EST. Dark days are upon us, and I, for one, couldn't be more pleased. For the past few days I've had the pleasure of exploring the dark corners of the press beta for <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/funcom">Funcom's</a> upcoming horror-fantasy MMO, <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em></a>, and now the embargo is up and I'm finally able to share my impressions with all of you.<br />
<br />
You may recall that I got some hands-on time with the title <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/11/pax-east-2012-exploring-the-dark-corners-of-the-secret-world/">at PAX East earlier this year</a> and came away from the experience fairly pleased. But that was an hour of playtime at the most, so how does the game hold up with extended play? I decided to hop into the (rather stylish) boots of an Illuminati initiate to find out for myself.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/11/hands-on-with-the-secret-worlds-illuminati-experience/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hands-on with The Secret World's Illuminati experience</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/11/hands-on-with-the-secret-worlds-illuminati-experience/">Hands-on with The Secret World's Illuminati experience</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 11 May 2012 09:00:00 EST. On Thursday, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine">Turbine</a> will take the wraps off of <a href="http://www.ddo.com"><em>Dungeons and Dragons Online:</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/menace-of-the-underdark"><em>Menace of the Underdark</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/03/ddos-menace-of-the-underdark-expansion-beta-starts-may-10th/">commence with the closed beta</a>. It's a heady time for both the team and playerbase, as this 2007 title steps into the big leagues of expansion-holding MMOs. And because we know you hate waiting for all the goods, we joined Turbine on the test server for an advance look at some of the hottest features coming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/27/going-inside-dungeons-and-dragons-online-menace-of-the-underdar/">with June's launch</a>.<br />
<br />
On the phone with us was Senior Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-boyer/">Eric Boyer</a>, Community Specialist Amanda Grove, and Design Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ian-currie">Ian Currie</a>. "We want to show players how big the expansion pack is and how much it'll be changing the game," Boyer began, telling us that levels one through 20 were merely "heroic" -- now it'll be time to make the move into epic territory.<br />
<br />
From a look at the much-anticipated Druid and the previously vague Epic Destinies to a lightning tour of your first day in the Forgotten Realms, the team was out to convince us that <em>Menace of the Underdark</em> is fully worthy of the "expansion" moniker. How's it looking so far? Take a look for yourself!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/09/druids-drow-and-destinies-in-an-epic-ddo-expansion-tour/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Druids, Drow, and destinies in an epic DDO expansion tour</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/09/druids-drow-and-destinies-in-an-epic-ddo-expansion-tour/">Druids, Drow, and destinies in an epic DDO expansion tour</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 09 May 2012 14:00:00 EST. Yes, Virginia, there is a game after character creation.<br />
<br />
With such extensive customization available, it is quite likely that I would have spent the duration of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/02/choose-my-adventure-taking-a-right-at-paragon-city/">Choose My Adventure</a> without ever actually logging in to play <em><a href="http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/index.php">City of Heroes</a></em>. For all of the hours I spent in character creation with all the options (enough to completely blow a fuse in your mind), it was easy to lose sight of the fact that there was actually a game to go play once <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/02/choose-my-adventure-taking-a-right-at-paragon-city/">I finally made my character</a>. Now I see the real appeal of the VIP pass with all of those character slots; it has even me thinking wistfully of all the alts that could be.<br />
<br />
Luckily I have you folks directing me, forcing me past the costume creator and into my role as defender of truth and justice. If it hadn't been for you, I would have never embarked on my journey of flight and fricasseed evil doers in Atlas Park. Or participated in an <a href="http://www.twitch.tv/massivelytv/b/317146116">impromptu street band performance</a>. Yup, it is all your fault! And I'm looking forward to what we do next as we continue our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes/"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> adventures together.<br />
<br />
But first, let's take a look at what mayhem I caused... er, put an end to this past week.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/09/choose-my-adventure-patrolling-the-park/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure: Patrolling the park</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/09/choose-my-adventure-patrolling-the-park/">Choose My Adventure: Patrolling the park</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 09 May 2012 12:00:00 EST. This column <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/08/rise-and-shiny-mabinogi/">will turn two years old</a> on May 8th, 2012. I'm proud of not only the fact that I have been able keep up the column with a decent amount of content and writing that has slowly gotten better over that time but also the fact that I have introduced the readers of Massively to so many games that they wouldn't otherwise have known about. Recently, I have <a href="http://www.twitch.tv/massivelytv">increased my efforts by streaming</a> odd and indie games as well as writing about the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mmobility/">relatively new world of mobile MMOs</a>.<br />
<br />
This might all seem like I am attempting to build some sort of indie hipster street cred, but the totally honest truth is that nothing thrills me more than exposing a new game to the world or giving an older game some much-needed sunlight. If someone posts, "This game is still around?" in the comments section, I call that a win.<br />
<br />
From now on, I am going to tweak how I do things for Rise and Shiny in order to raise the quality of coverage. Let me explain how as well as give you a few figures to illustrate just how many titles I have covered.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/06/rise-and-shiny-looking-back-at-two-years-and-a-change-of-order/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny: Looking back on two years and making changes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/06/rise-and-shiny-looking-back-at-two-years-and-a-change-of-order/">Rise and Shiny: Looking back on two years and making changes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 06 May 2012 12:00:00 EST. It was the flying Scrapper on Virtue with a mask!<br />
<br />
The masses have spoken. For this leg of our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure/">Choose My Adventure</a> journey, we will be parking ourselves in Paragon City, fighting the forces of evil, destruction, and movement keys! I must concede that Bree certainly knew her <a href="http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/index.php"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> community -- ya'll voted just how she said you would. But Bree, you didn't predict the mask, now did ya?! Ha!<br />
<br />
It recently came to my attention that I could have easily queried you on the spandex issue, but come on -- what superhero doesn't have to shimmy into that painted-on suit? We want the full experience, right? Right. So let's get to it. All we have left to do to get this show off the road and into some action is whip up a character.<br />
<br />
But this is <em>me</em> we are talking about here! Thankfully, I am marching into this process armed with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/25/choose-my-adventure-next-stop-city-of-heroes/">your decisions</a>! I mean, how bad can it be? We have three days between close of the last vote and a new set of new ones, so it isn't like there isn't time. Though a recent catchphrase for <em><a href="http://na.aiononline.com/">Aion's</a></em> conversion to the Truly Free model, having it "your way" ((R)[TM]<font size=".5">BLT</font>) predates <a href="http://us.ncsoft.com/en/">NCsoft's</a> usage. Burger joints and assassins for hire alike touted this business motto long before the game. So there is no real infringement if I borrow this philosophy and mold it to my own purposes. And mold it I will, like Playdoh on a hot summer's day.<br />
<br />
Some of you may have noticed that I have been livestreaming on a weekly basis to help expand on the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion">Aion</a></em> experience. (If you haven't, it's never to late <a href="http://www.twitch.tv/massivelytv/b/316268209">to</a> <a href="http://www.twitch.tv/massivelytv/b/314866834">watch</a>!) The thing is, if we just follow my own personal playstyle, you might be stuck watching me rearrange furniture in my little condo for hours on end since I usually play however the mood strikes me at that moment. That's where you come in.<br />
<br />
It's time to vicariously experience <em>Aion</em> your way! This week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/wings-over-atreia">Wings Over Atreia</a> is all about getting to the heart of what <em>you</em> want. Then I can incorporate the things that you find interesting into the livestreams and even the weekly articles. How shall we accomplish this? Well, although it seems some of you have been able to resist the lure of the spiffy tag at the end of every column that asks for reader suggestions, how many of you can resist... *dramatic music* The Poll? So quick and simple, just a few clicks...<br />
<br />
If you ever wanted to tell me where to go, now is your chance.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/30/wings-over-atreia-aion-your-way/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wings Over Atreia: Aion your way</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/30/wings-over-atreia-aion-your-way/">Wings Over Atreia: Aion your way</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 30 Apr 2012 12:00:00 EST. This article was a long time coming. Not only have I avoided taking a look at any sort of pure MUD for many years, but I meant to write this up last week but real life interrupted my plans. I just didn't think it was fair to write up a first impressions based on only a few hours of play. I was quite hesitant to take a deeper look at <a href="http://www.play.net/gs4/"><em>Gemstone IV</em></a> mainly because I knew that the non-stop reading would surely create more migraines that might derail my work <em>again</em>. I was very worried, actually.<br />
<br />
Luckily, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gemstone-iv/"><em>Gemstone IV</em></a> client is customizable enough to allow me to create a "book-style" experience: black text on a white background. I don't think I'm alone in my inability to view bright, colored text on a dark background comfortably. If I were, popular websites would still look like they were from 1996. We've moved past ugly fonts and horrible color combinations.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately it took me most of the time with <em>Gemstone IV</em> just to learn how to play, make the text comfortable to read, and understand what my character was supposed to be doing. Once I got comfortable, though, I honestly had one of the most enchanting times in a game yet.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/29/rise-and-shiny-gemstone-iv/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny: Gemstone IV</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/29/rise-and-shiny-gemstone-iv/">Rise and Shiny: Gemstone IV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 29 Apr 2012 12:00:00 EST. I hope your vote wasn't born from a desire to see me in tights!<br />
<br />
Although road trips can be just as fun when you just jump in the car and take off with no predetermined destination, at some point you have to end up somewhere. And it looks like we now know our destination. While I was safely strapped in my seat and watching the scenery, you readers have taken the <em><a href="http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/index.php">City of Heroes</a></em> exit. So it looks like a cape and superpowers will be on order for the next few weeks in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure/">Choose my Adventure</a>. (Unless you nix the cape, of course.)<br />
<br />
Surprisingly, this time around I actually managed to sit back and enjoy the ride without checking the poll results every 20 minutes of every day; I managed to restrain myself to just once a day! Maybe it was because I've let you have the keys before and knew that I really would enjoy the experience no matter where you took me. After all, you didn't get us in a wreck <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/choose-my-adventure-xsyon/">last time</a>, did you? And Justin survived (relatively) unscathed, so what was there to worry about?<br />
<br />
Perhaps on another trip we will be able to explore other exotic destinations, such as <em><a href="http://www.funcom.com/games/ao">Anarchy Online</a></em>, <em><a href="http://startrekonline.com/frontpage">Star Trek Online</a></em>, <a href="http://ac.turbine.com/"><em>Asheron's Call</em></a>, or even <em><a href="https://worldoftanks.com/play/en/">World of Tanks</a></em>. I'll admit that I wistfully entertained images of visiting each of these destinations while I was glancing periodically at the polls, but for now, our course is set, and we will be arriving shortly. The first order of business before jumping into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> is a shot pitstop to develop our character. Be sure to get your vote in before Saturday, April 28th, 2012, at 11:59 p.m. EDT!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/25/choose-my-adventure-next-stop-city-of-heroes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure: Next stop, City of Heroes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/25/choose-my-adventure-next-stop-city-of-heroes/">Choose My Adventure: Next stop, City of Heroes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 25 Apr 2012 12:00:00 EST. Let's go for another spin!<br />
<br />
Just like Mikey of Life cereal fame, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/23/choose-my-adventure-to-boldly-go-where-no-cma-has-gone-before-e/">I ventured</a> into the realm of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure/">Choose My Adventure</a> once before, and I liked it! Grand adventures, camaraderie with readers, exploring the unknown... what more could I ask for? More time, obviously!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/choose-my-adventure-xsyon/">It ended</a> all too soon. I was totally revved up and ready to jump right back in, but unfortunately neither pleading nor bribery worked to continue my stint as your plucky puppet (and locking the other staff members in a dark closet didn't pan out either -- they escaped), so I had to park it and wait my turn. It took much too long, but finally my time has come again. *<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zS1cLOIxsQ8">happy dance</a>*<br />
<br />
Now the boss may have handed me the keys, but you will be the ones driving. The top is down, and I've got snacks and shades; all that is left to begin our adventure for the next six weeks is to pick which direction to head and floor it. Although a lot of good places have already been visited, there are plenty more to choose from. In the mood for fantasy? Capes? Nebulas? Heavy artillery? There are certain designs in the MMORTS genre that have frankly started to burn me out. I was a bit worried that I had reached my tolerance point and would not be able to stomach another city-builder until I had put some time between me and my latest preview or first impressions. It's an amazing genre, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/09/the-soapbox-my-mmorts-is-more-mmo-than-your-mmorpg/">as I have argued before</a>, it's more MMO than most MMOs. As in many genres, successful design is copied. The ironic thing is that all of these copies often dilute the market, making it worse on everyone. As much as I love the genre, I am a bit sick of running into the same design, stereotypical settings, and mechanics. Of course, we cannot take these copies and paint the whole genre with a terrible brush; if we did that, all of MMOdom would be in trouble. Still, I'm sick of it.<br />

Luckily <a href="http://www.fireflyworlds.com/">Firefly Worlds</a>, maker of <a href="https://www.strongholdkingdoms.com/"><em>Stronghold Kingdoms</em></a>, has a very persistent "PR ninja" who made a point to poke at me on Twitter. Usually, we funnel all PR contact to our lead editors for organization purposes, but hey, I can't resist a nice voice and a lovely looking game... and I have a high tolerance for fun people.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/15/rise-and-shiny-stronghold-kingdoms/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny: Stronghold Kingdoms</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/15/rise-and-shiny-stronghold-kingdoms/">Rise and Shiny: Stronghold Kingdoms</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 15 Apr 2012 12:00:00 EST. As I headed into my final week of playing <a href="http://darkageofcamelot.com/"><em>Dark Age of Camelot</em></a>, I found myself thinking about <a href="http://warhammeronline.com/"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> more often than not. That shouldn't be surprising, really, as both games were made by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic/">Mythic</a> and share a focus on RvR. I suppose it's because I finally hit a point in the game when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dark-age-of-camelot"><em>DAoC</em></a> started to emulate experiences I had in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>WAR</em></a>, and thus a comparison between the two began to unfold.<br />
<br />
While I'm sure plenty of folks who played <em>DAoC </em>went on to <em>WAR</em>, I'm curious whether there are many like me who went through the games in the reverse order. I may not be a veteran <em>DAoC </em>player after a few weeks in the game, but I certainly have a mountain of experience in <em>WAR</em>, and it intrigues me to be able to identify the connections between the two.<br />
<br />
So as I plundered the battlefields of <em>DAoC </em>this week, I started to examine the game through the lens of a <em>WAR </em>vet to see whether I could spot the traits each game had in common and which traits each game handled better than the other.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/11/choose-my-adventure-dark-age-of-camelot-week-five/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure: Dark Age of Camelot, week five</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/11/choose-my-adventure-dark-age-of-camelot-week-five/">Choose My Adventure: Dark Age of Camelot, week five</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 11 Apr 2012 14:00:00 EST. As anyone around the Massively offices can tell you, I am eagerly-bordering-on-obsessively awaiting the release of <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/funcom">Funcom's</a> latest entry into the MMO market, <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/the-secret-world">The Secret World</a></em>. I'm all about the supernatural, occult, and paranormal, and <em>The Secret World</em>'s "all the myths are true" philosophy is right up my alley, so when I heard that there would be a playable demo at <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/pax-east-2012">PAX East 2012</a>, it was all I could do not to squeal like a 12-year-old girl (and I may have done so anyway).<br />
<br />
Of course, many people are hesitant about the title. Between <em>The Secret World</em>'s subscription-cum-microtransactions business model and Funcom's track record of poor launches and bug-laden games, some gamers are finding themselves hesitant to get hyped up for the game's June 19th launch. Of course, I'd be lying if I said I weren't at least a bit cautious myself, regardless of my enthusiasm for the game. So how is the game shaping up? Well, sit down, grab yourself a drink, and let me tell you what I think.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/11/pax-east-2012-exploring-the-dark-corners-of-the-secret-world/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX East 2012: Exploring the dark corners of The Secret World</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/11/pax-east-2012-exploring-the-dark-corners-of-the-secret-world/">PAX East 2012: Exploring the dark corners of The Secret World</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 11 Apr 2012 10:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.tera-online.com"><em>TERA</em></a> isn't the only upcoming MMO to feature big-ass monsters and action combat. <a href="http://www.perfectworld.com">Perfect World Entertainment</a> showed us a demo of <a href="http://raiderz.perfectworld.com"><em>Raiderz</em></a> at last weekend's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-east-2012">PAX East</a>, and producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-hill">Mark Hill</a> was pretty enthusiastic about the game's level of polish. He also made a point of highlighting the amount of free gameplay the company will be making available to fans later this year.<br />
<br />

This all feels very familiar.<br />
<br />
The gorgeous Asian aesthetics, the sexed-up avatars, and the hordes of high school tykes runting and squealing in global chat take me back to September of 2009 and the opening gyrations of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wings-over-atreia-jef-reahard">themepark orgy</a> that was <a href="http://www.aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Only this time, there are no angel wings, there's but one faction, and the game's called <a href="http://www.tera-online.com"><em>TERA</em></a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/09/weekend-warrior-two-days-with-teras-beta-berserker/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Weekend warrior: Two days with TERA's beta berserker</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/09/weekend-warrior-two-days-with-teras-beta-berserker/">Weekend warrior: Two days with TERA's beta berserker</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 09 Apr 2012 14:30:00 EST. <div>
	Last year at <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/pax-prime-2011">PAX Prime</a>, I had the opportunity to get my hands on an early version of <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/red-5-studios">Red 5 Studios'</a> upcoming MMOFPS, <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/firefall">Firefall</a></em>. The game's come a long way since then, having gone into closed beta shortly after PAX Prime.<br />
	<br />
	As of Friday, the game's NDA has finally dropped, and I can finally tell you fine folks all about my experiences with the game's beta. For those of you somehow not in the know, <em>Firefall</em> is essentially two games in one. On the one hand, you have the title's open-world PvE content that sees players exploring the lands of New Eden in an attempt to find a way to fight back the destructive alien force known as the Melding. On the other, there's the competitive e-sports-esque PvP, which lets players test their skills against each another to see who's the best shot in New Eden. So how much has <em>Firefall</em> changed between PAX Prime '11 and <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/pax-east-2012">PAX East '12</a>?</div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/08/ready-aim-firefall-impressions-of-the-closed-beta/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ready, aim, Firefall: Impressions of the closed beta</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/08/ready-aim-firefall-impressions-of-the-closed-beta/">Ready, aim, Firefall: Impressions of the closed beta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 08 Apr 2012 14:00:00 EST. <a href="http://zandagort.com/"><em>Zandagort</em></a>, a very independent browser-based MMORTS by <a href="http://zandagames.com/">Zanda Games</a>, really holds a lot of promise. I want to get that out of the way first. Potential, unfortunately, has nothing to do with a player's current experience with the game. No one sits at his PC or laptop and says, "Man, I sure am excited about what this game could be, so I'll keep playing." But that very potential often makes me a little depressed. Potential for good also means potential for bad; if a game is unfinished and has the chance to grow, there's likewise a very real possibility that the game could fester, lose development love, or worse yet, die on the vine. There's no guarantee that even a "AAA" massive-budget game like <a href="http://www.swtor.com/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> or <a href="http://www.riftgame.com/en/"><em>RIFT</em></a> will last forever or even a good amount of time. Who knows?<br />
<br />
Usually with an indie game, if it isn't shining and picking up an audience relatively quickly, it just might be in trouble. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/browser/"><em>Zandagort</em></a> has an audience; I can see players in the outer reaches of space. I am not going to pass judgment on the <em>number</em> of players simply because indie budgets are often easily supported by a smaller playerbase, but I wonder what type of audience it is. I am open-minded and enjoy the occasional slog through an intense "spreadsheets-in-space"-style game, but <em>Zandagort</em> really wore down my patience.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/08/rise-and-shiny-zandagort/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny: Zandagort</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/08/rise-and-shiny-zandagort/">Rise and Shiny: Zandagort</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 08 Apr 2012 12:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom</a>'s <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world">The Secret World</a> </em>has had a big weekend at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX-East-2012/">PAX East</a> with its first public chance for hands-on interaction! It's a game that's been stirring up quite a bit of interest; the classless, level-less progression system, secret societies, and sword-and-automatic-rifle genre-bending are just a few of its selling points. My ears tend to perk up when the game gets mentioned, so of course I was all but falling over myself to hop into the playable demo this weekend. Walking away from that experience, though, I'm unconvinced.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/07/pax-east-2012-the-secret-world-demo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX East 2012: The Secret World demo</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/07/pax-east-2012-the-secret-world-demo/">PAX East 2012: The Secret World demo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 07 Apr 2012 22:00:00 EST. In the service of Massively's ongoing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-east-2012/">PAX East 2012 coverage</a>, I spent some time today in and around the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tera/">TERA</a></em> booth, ogling the pretty trailers and getting a seat in a group press demo to tackle some fun high-end content in the form of a five-player encounter with an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/03/en-masse-shares-new-tera-argon-lore-screens/">Argon</a> boss. Read on for an overview of what I saw!<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/tera-pax-2012/">TERA PAX 2012</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/tera-pax-2012/#4952253"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/teratulufan-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/tera-pax-2012/#4952254"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/teratulufan-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/tera-pax-2012/#4952255"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/teratulufan-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/tera-pax-2012/#4952256"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/teratulufan-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/tera-pax-2012/#4952257"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/teratulufan_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/07/pax-east-2012-tera-hands-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX East 2012: TERA hands-on</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/07/pax-east-2012-tera-hands-on/">PAX East 2012: TERA hands-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 07 Apr 2012 18:00:00 EST. Many words come to mind when you mention Dungeons &amp; Dragons, but "action" is not usually one of them. So at first glance, <a href="http://www.playneverwinter.com"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> might seem like a bit of an odd beast. The game is meant as an action-based MMORPG that takes place in the distant future of the beloved <em>Neverwinter Nights</em> series; it's being developed by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic-Studios/">Cryptic Studios</a> and published by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Perfect-World-Entertainment/">Perfect World Entertainment</a>. While the game isn't yet in open testing, the early version was playable on the floor of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX-East-2012/">PAX East</a>, and we had a chance to sit down with Cryptic Studios to discuss the game's development.<br />
<br />
I came to the show with no real expectations about the game beyond the fact that I knew the companies involved and was distantly aware of the game's development. I walked away more than a little impressed by what I had seen. However odd the collection of elements might seem, the game itself certainly piqued my interest.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/neverwinter/">Neverwinter</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/neverwinter/#4949422"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/nwscreen04021204_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/neverwinter/#4949423"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/nwscreen04021205_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/neverwinter/#4949424"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/nwscreen04021206_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/neverwinter/#4949425"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/nwscreen04021207_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/neverwinter/#4949426"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/nwscreen04021208_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/07/pax-east-2012-neverwinter-discussion-and-impressions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX East 2012: Neverwinter discussion and impressions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/07/pax-east-2012-neverwinter-discussion-and-impressions/">PAX East 2012: Neverwinter discussion and impressions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 07 Apr 2012 17:00:00 EST. Much like its predecessor, <a href="http://www.worldofwarplanes.com"><em>World of Warplanes</em></a> is not a game with an ambiguous title. This is a game about planes, and not the sort that flies cargo from one point on the globe to another. If flying around and getting into aerial dogfights sounds like an unappealing concept to you, well, you can pretty much just exit stage left when you hear the name.<br />
<br />
But the lack of subtlety in the name, however noteworthy, doesn't really say much about the game itself. Is it fun to play? Does it succeed in what it sets out to do? Really, is it just <a href="http://www.worldoftanks.com"><em>World of Tanks</em></a> up in the air? I can't speak to the last one, but I can say that it definitely delivers on its stated design goals. This is a game all about maximizing the rush of an aerial fight and striking a balance between crafting an in-depth flight simulation and providing accessibility to those new to the genre.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/world-of-warplanes/">World of Warplanes</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/world-of-warplanes/#4851802"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/wowpscreenussr05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/world-of-warplanes/#4851801"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/wowpscreenussr04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/world-of-warplanes/#4851800"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/wowpscreenussr03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/world-of-warplanes/#4851798"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/wowpscreenussr02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/world-of-warplanes/#4851797"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/wowpscreenussr01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/06/pax-east-2012-world-of-warplanes-impressions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX East 2012: World of Warplanes impressions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/06/pax-east-2012-world-of-warplanes-impressions/">PAX East 2012: World of Warplanes impressions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 06 Apr 2012 17:00:00 EST. Move over, MOBAs -- there's a new kid in town. As <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/pax-east-2012">PAX East 2012</a> rocks onward, <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/hi-rez-studios">Hi-Rez Studios</a> is flaunting its newest upcoming title, the action-game-inspired MOBA <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/smite"><em>SMITE</em></a>. Today I got the opportunity to sit down with the game and get my face ground into the floor by the myriad more-experienced players with whom I played. But regardless of my utter incompetence, I still got some hands-on time with the title, so indulge me for a moment and let me tell you about it.<br />
<br />
The basic layout of the game will be quite familiar to any MOBA player. It sticks to the tried-and-true formula set forth by <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dota">Defense of the Ancients</a></em> in almost every possible way. There are three lanes, each lined with a number of defensive towers, and the ultimate objective is to work in tandem with your teammates and allied NPC creeps with the goal of pushing through the towers and destroying the enemy's giant minotaur.<br />
<br />
Wait, what?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/06/pax-east-2012-hands-on-with-hi-rezs-new-moba-smite/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX East 2012: Hands-on with Hi-Rez's new MOBA, SMITE</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/06/pax-east-2012-hands-on-with-hi-rezs-new-moba-smite/">PAX East 2012: Hands-on with Hi-Rez's new MOBA, SMITE</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 06 Apr 2012 16:00:00 EST. By participating in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure/">Choose My Adventure</a>, I'm starting to realize that this column is perhaps one of the most meta projects that we do here on Massively. It's not just a popularity contest between games (although it begins that way) nor a mere hands-on play-through of a title. Instead, it's a bizarre combination of one person led by hundreds of puppet masters with the added layer of forging a path as a complete newbie so that others who follow in my wake may learn from my mistakes.<br />
<br />
But with all of you as my puppet masters, I have the added pressure of not wanting to let any of you down. I know that last week some of you were disappointed with my progress (or lack thereof) and could identify dozens of things I was just doing flat-out wrong. That's another layer to this experience, I think: It gives experienced vets the chance to see the game through virgin eyes and to pass down sage advice that they themselves wish they had gotten right out of the gate.<br />
<br />
So this past week was all about taking in your advice and attempting to execute it to the best of my ability. Some of it worked, and some did not, but the end result was a series of <a href="http://darkageofcamelot.com/"><em>Dark Age of Camelot</em></a> play sessions that were far less frustrating -- and even, dare I say, intriguing?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/04/choose-my-adventure-dark-age-of-camelot-week-four/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure: Dark Age of Camelot, week four</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/04/choose-my-adventure-dark-age-of-camelot-week-four/">Choose My Adventure: Dark Age of Camelot, week four</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 04 Apr 2012 13:00:00 EST. Frustrating and boring: These are two words that don't bode well for any MMO, and yet that's exactly what my <a href="http://darkageofcamelot.com/"><em>Dark Age of Camelot</em></a> experience this past week was.<br />
<br />
Now, granted there's always an adjustment period with new MMOs, and I like to think of myself as a fairly patient person. I know that sometimes it might be a matter of minutes or understanding to flip "frustration" into "joy" and "boring" into "addictive," which is why it's good to stick games out until you're sure that the issue isn't with you playing the game wrong or being ignorant of what makes it work.<br />
<br />
That said, if I wasn't covering <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dark-age-of-camelot"><em>DAoC</em></a> for this column but was just trying it out for myself, I certainly would not have subscribed after finishing the 14-day trial. New player journey or no, I found more aggravation than fun this past week and kept wondering to myself, "When does it start to get good? Where's all that great stuff players are telling me about? And as a Troll, how much lotion do I need to get my skin feeling silky soft?"<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/28/choose-my-adventure-dark-age-of-camelot-week-three/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure: Dark Age of Camelot, week three</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/28/choose-my-adventure-dark-age-of-camelot-week-three/">Choose My Adventure: Dark Age of Camelot, week three</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 28 Mar 2012 15:00:00 EST. The most recent <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/guild-wars-2">Guild Wars 2</a></em> beta weekend has wound to a close (much to my dismay), but thankfully my time in Tyria has not been wasted. Oh, heavens no. I spent the majority of the weekend running around the war-torn borderlands and getting the everloving daylights stomped out of me in the game's world vs. world combat.<br />
	<br />
	When I wasn't busy acquainting my face with the ground, however, I had plenty of time to meander about the battlefield of The Mists, storming keeps, cutting off supply caravans, and defending encampments, and now I finally get to share my impressions with all of you fine readers. So what did I think about <em>GW2</em>'s WvW system (my total lack of PvP ability aside)? Rev up your siege engines and gird your proverbial loins, then follow past the cut to find out!</div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/a-look-at-guild-wars-2s-world-vs-world/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A look at Guild Wars 2's world vs. world PvP</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/a-look-at-guild-wars-2s-world-vs-world/">A look at Guild Wars 2's world vs. world PvP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 26 Mar 2012 13:00:00 EST. <em>The second </em><a href="http://www.guildwars2.com">Guild Wars 2</a><em> press beta weekend has come and gone, and Massively was there every step of the way. Stay tuned throughout the day today for even more <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/guild-wars-2-beta">guides, impressions, videos, and Q&amp;As</a> to get you ready for the highly anticipated sequel to </em><a href="http://www.guildwars.com">Guild Wars</a><em>.</em><br />
<br />
In just the few minutes that it takes to traverse the 10 screens of <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2's</em></a> character creation process, I'm left with one overriding thought: This game looks ridiculously good. Ludicrously so, even. And I didn't even enter the game world yet!<br />
<br />
I always love a good, in-depth character creation system, as there's a joy in spending a good amount of time making exactly the sort of character you want to play. Unfortunately, most MMOs have stripped this process down to the bare basics, which is why I'm pleased to announce that it's actually a mini-journey in and of itself in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>.<br />
<br />
The point of this process isn't just to make a character but help you grow attached to this person and get to know him or her through it. What are this character's motivations? What branch of his or her profession is the most appealing? How did you become a hero? What obstacles do you have to overcome?<br />
<br />
Instead of playing the game itself, I took some time over this beta testing weekend to dissect every step of the character creation system and bring my findings back to those of you who want to start building your character in your mind.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/breaking-down-guild-wars-2s-character-creator/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Breaking down Guild Wars 2's character creator</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/breaking-down-guild-wars-2s-character-creator/">Breaking down Guild Wars 2's character creator</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 26 Mar 2012 12:00:00 EST. <br />
<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars-2/">Guild Wars 2</a></em> is on the way (when it's ready), and classic <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars/">Guild Wars</a></em> players probably understand that soon they'll be competing with a younger sibling -- a smarter, more attractive one who's sure to get more of mom's attention. And while we're sure that some of the more stalwart <em>Guild Wars 2</em> fans are also <em>Guild Wars</em> players, not all veterans of the first edition are dedicated to licking up every drop of sequel info squeezed out of blogs, conventions, and betas. Those veterans might just be wondering, what exactly can <em>Guild Wars 2</em> offer them, other than <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Hall-of-Monuments/">Hall of Monuments</a> tie-ins? What's changed? What's the same? What will they love, what will they hate, and what could possibly make them jump ship to the new hotness?<br />
<br />
The first and most important thing you must know is that yes, you can jump in <em>Guild Wars 2</em>! Seriously, though, jumping is more than just a thing you do with your spacebar when you're bored; it's a symbol of <em>boundlessness</em>. <em>Guild Wars 2</em> itself is trying to jump a lot higher than its elder brother, and probably the essential difference between the games is that feeling that the walls have come down and gravity is letting loose. That alone should urge classic players to take a peek, but if that's not enough for you, fire up your <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jeremy-Soule/">Jeremy Soule</a> soundtracks (yes, he's onboard for an encore!) and read on...<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/making-the-jump-from-guild-wars-to-guild-wars-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Making the 'jump' from Guild Wars to Guild Wars 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/making-the-jump-from-guild-wars-to-guild-wars-2/">Making the 'jump' from Guild Wars to Guild Wars 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 26 Mar 2012 11:00:00 EST. In the past, I've made a few attempts at trying <a href="http://www.realmofthemadgod.com/"><em>Realm of the Mad God</em></a>, a "co-op fantasy MMO shooter" by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Wild-Shadow-Studios/">Wild Shadow Studios</a>. But I've been unsuccessful primarily because I couldn't find a way to get past the seemingly repetitive gameplay, horrible forum community and non-MMO status. Luckily a reader named Rick wrote to me and convinced me to give it one more go, saying that it <em>was</em> an MMO by showing me pictures and listing examples of how many players can be found in one area.<br />
<br />
That settled it. I made a new account and jumped in, fully expecting to have an OK time but to come away knowing that this game was just for twitch-hooked kiddies. It turns out I was wrong, and now you know why it is a general rule of mine to <em>always</em> give a game a second chance. Or a third, of course.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/25/rise-and-shiny-realm-of-the-mad-god/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny: Realm of the Mad God</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/25/rise-and-shiny-realm-of-the-mad-god/">Rise and Shiny: Realm of the Mad God</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 25 Mar 2012 12:00:00 EST. Some of you probably know that I first got into the blogging scene with my <a href="http://warhammeronline.com/"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> blog <a href="http://waaagh.wordpress.com/">Waaagh!</a> Back then in early 2008, I was a veritable <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic/">Mythic</a> and PvP newbie, and I spent a good portion of the lead-up to the game's release reading up on <a href="http://darkageofcamelot.com/"><em>Dark Age of Camelot</em></a>. I figured that, after all, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>WAR</em></a> would be built on the foundation of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dark-age-of-camelot"><em>DAoC</em></a>. In a way, it both was and wasn't.<br />
<br />
The one thing I never did was actually play <em>DAoC</em>. Older MMOs can be quite intimidating; they have deep-rooted communities and tomes of updates and history, and they were more rough around the edges. Rough in their cores, too, if we're being honest. So the intimidation factor kept me away until this past week, when Massively readers sent me on a quest to Camelot for the first time in my life.<br />
<br />
Last week <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/14/choose-my-adventure-dark-age-of-camelot-week-one/">readers voted on the character I was to roll</a>. An impressive 82% of you said to check out the realm vs. realm ruleset and roll a a Midgard (43.2%) beastly (40.8%) hybrid (43.3%) character. After reading some of the recommendations in the comments, I ended up making a female Troll Skald on a traditional server. She may be lumpy and bulky, but I took a shine to her right away.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/21/choose-my-adventure-dark-age-of-camelot-week-two/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure: Dark Age of Camelot, week two</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/21/choose-my-adventure-dark-age-of-camelot-week-two/">Choose My Adventure: Dark Age of Camelot, week two</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 21 Mar 2012 15:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://limeodyssey.aeriagames.com/">Lime Odyssey</a></em> is an Anime-themed free-to-play MMO brought to us from publisher <a href="http://www.aeriagames.com/">Aeria Games</a>. It features three unique races and... oh, forget it. You already know this probably. The game has a lot of buzz behind it, and Aeria is known to put out some great titles. I knew that when I was invited to check out the alpha for a first impression of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lime-odyssey/"><em>Lime Odyssey</em></a>, I would find a game that was high-quality and beautiful and ran well.<br />
<br />
Sure enough, I did find that game. There's something magical about so many Korean titles. Many of them sport some of the most refreshing and original artwork and music, and the engines that many of those titles use is perfectly fit for almost any machine. Yes, there are the three races to choose from, the great Anime graphics, the neat crafting system, and combat systems and much more. My only regret is that I was able to spend only a few days in the game.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/18/rise-and-shiny-lime-odyssey/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny: Lime Odyssey</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/18/rise-and-shiny-lime-odyssey/">Rise and Shiny: Lime Odyssey</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 18 Mar 2012 12:00:00 EST. Hol. Ee. Crap.<br />
<br />
Seriously, folks, I don't know how it usually goes down in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Choose-my-adventure">CMA</a>town, but I've never experienced a week of my life when I was literally watching strangers decide my destiny -- and go neck-and-neck in the process. After thousands and thousands of votes, it all came down to a difference of... three. Really.<br />
<br />
Three MMO communities caught wind of last week's poll regarding the game I'd be playing and writing up over the next several weeks. <a href="http://darkageofcamelot.com"><em>Dark Age of Camelot</em></a> players fought valiantly against <a href="http://www.anarchyonline.com/"><em>Anarchy Online</em></a> fans for the privilege of this column's focus, often times trading spots for first and second place. The <em><a href="http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/">City of Heroes</a></em> community got into the game late and racked up several hundred votes in an attempt to secure the win, but ultimately it came down to a last-minute brawl in which <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dark-age-of-camelot"><em>DAoC</em></a> garnered three measly votes more than <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/anarchy-online"><em>AO</em></a>, which means I'll be heading off to Camelot starting next week.<br />
<br />
With the insane voting over a game at an end, today begins the real fun: You get to roll my character for me. Join me as I lay out just how this is going to work with<em> DAoC's</em> crazy setup.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/14/choose-my-adventure-dark-age-of-camelot-week-one/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure: Dark Age of Camelot, week one</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/14/choose-my-adventure-dark-age-of-camelot-week-one/">Choose My Adventure: Dark Age of Camelot, week one</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 14 Mar 2012 15:00:00 EST. There may be no Brad Pitt and bars of soap, but <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/fighters-club/"><em>Fighters Club</em></a>, an upcoming MMO from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/KOG-studios/">KOG Studios</a>, has plenty of pugilistic power to make Jack a happy man. At <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2012/">GDC</a> last week, Massively had a chance to see some of the action and talk to the team about its plans for beta and launch. If you're curious about <em>Fighters Club</em>, then tape up those knuckles, slip into some kick-boxing shoes, and let's get ready to rumble!<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/fighters-club-online/">Fighters Club Online</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/fighters-club-online/#4893648"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/characters_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/fighters-club-online/#4893649"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/jack-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/fighters-club-online/#4893650"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/jakc-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/fighters-club-online/#4893651"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/remy-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/fighters-club-online/#4893653"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/remy-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/13/gdc-2012-a-look-at-fighters-club-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2012: A look at Fighters Club Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/13/gdc-2012-a-look-at-fighters-club-online/">GDC 2012: A look at Fighters Club Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 13 Mar 2012 18:00:00 EST. Goodness, I hope you have heard that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> is releasing a new patch soon. It's been jokingly dubbed the "Jesus Patch" because it's supposed to contain everything, and incidentally, it may "save" the game. Many critics have written off the game because developers missed some essential MMO ingredients when it launched. Despite that, <em>SWTOR</em> currently stands as the fastest-growing MMO ever and retains the second largest subscription base, according to <a href="http://ea.com">Electronic Arts</a>' investor calls.<br />

During the recent Guild Summit, while the guild leaders and fan site press were shuttled off, the press made its way to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare</a> studios to try out the new content in Update 1.2. Each member was given his or her station to tool around with. Immediately, I noticed that the two Bounty Hunters in the character selection screen wore armor I had never seen before: Black Hole armor and War Hero armor. We were about to step into the new flashpoint called the Lost Island as well as the new Novare Coast warzone.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/13/massivelys-hands-on-with-star-wars-the-old-republic-update-1-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's hands-on with Star Wars: The Old Republic Update 1.2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/13/massivelys-hands-on-with-star-wars-the-old-republic-update-1-2/">Massively's hands-on with Star Wars: The Old Republic Update 1.2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 13 Mar 2012 10:00:00 EST.
