As a part of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/MUD-May/">MUD May</a>, I just had to play at least one MUD for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rise-and-shiny/">Rise and Shiny</a>. I have a handful of favorite MUDs, like <a href="https://www.play.net/gs4/"><em>GemStone IV</em></a>, <a href="http://www.bat.org/"><em>BatMUD</em></a>, and <a href="http://www.achaea.com/"><em>Achaea</em></a>, but I have never really given <a href="https://www.play.net/dr/"><em>DragonRealms</em></a> a chance. Until now. I've poked into it here and there, but every time I found myself on the <a href="http://www.play.net/corporate/">Simutronics</a> website, I always logged into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gemstone-iv/"><em>GemStone IV</em></a>. I heard that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/DragonRealms"><em>DragonRealms</em></a> was a lot different, more hardcore, and filled with PvP, and after spending an initial week with the game and the killer community, I can say that it <em>is</em> different, but mainly in a few outstanding ways. Of course I might find much more that sets the game apart if I played it for several years like some of the people I met in game, but for now I'll settle with telling you what I've learned so far.<br />
<br />
The usual embedded video in this article serves two purposes. First, it's an interview piece I did with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-latham/">Eric Latham</a>, Producer at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/simutronics/">Simutronics</a>. Next, it's a glance at <em>DragonRealms</em>, from character creation to a bit of gameplay. It's not as in-depth as my other videos, but it keeps in the greater theme of MUD May.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/19/rise-and-shiny-dragonrealms/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny: DragonRealms</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/19/rise-and-shiny-dragonrealms/">Rise and Shiny: DragonRealms</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 19 May 2013 12:00:00 EST. Man up MJ, you said. Forsake the fetters of safety and wander the wilds of the world. Yes, folks, for the next phase of our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/choose-my-adventure-mj-guthrie/"><em>Choose My Adventure</em></a> project, you directed me to leave the confines of the starting cities and surrounding lands to explore and harvest in the unprotected areas in <em><a href="http://www.darkfallonline.com/">Darkfall Unholy Wars</a></em>. That, and get familiar with the workbench for crafting. So said you all, and so I did.<br />
<br />
I ran little Emey Brokenclaw beyond the bounds of the safe zones and introduced her to the vast lands stretching across Agon. I enjoyed some exciting experiences as well as learned quite a few things during that journey, though not necessarily what you'd expect.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/choose-my-adventure-darkfall-unholy-wars/">Choose My Adventure: Darkfall Unholy Wars</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/choose-my-adventure-darkfall-unholy-wars/#5879813"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/c1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/choose-my-adventure-darkfall-unholy-wars/#5879817"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/c5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/choose-my-adventure-darkfall-unholy-wars/#5879814"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/c2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/choose-my-adventure-darkfall-unholy-wars/#5879818"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/c6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/choose-my-adventure-darkfall-unholy-wars/#5879815"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/c3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/choose-my-adventure-beyond-the-walls-of-safety-in-darkfall/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure: Beyond the walls of safety in Darkfall</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/choose-my-adventure-beyond-the-walls-of-safety-in-darkfall/">Choose My Adventure: Beyond the walls of safety in Darkfall</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 15 May 2013 16:00:00 EST. I try to take deeper looks at certain titles at least once a year. These are special games that prove to me that MMORPGs are still the best gaming you can participate in, pixel for pixel. <a href="http://mabinogi.nexon.net/"><em>Mabinogi</em></a> is one of those titles. It's also one of those titles that almost makes me want to quit writing about games. Ironically, the more you write about games, the less time you have to play specific titles, games that could easily suck away hours of your life every day. These are virtual worlds with open character development and grand, sweeping storylines. If I had the time, I'd probably spend most of it in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mabinogi"><em>Mabinogi</em></a>.<br />
<br />
During this week's revisit, I knew I had to accomplish several things. First, I needed to clean up my quest list. <em>Mabinogi</em> is wonderful in the way it offers a player tons and tons of content and storylines, but they can be visited in a non-linear fashion that leads to confusion. Second, I wanted to revel in the glory that was the newly free extended inventory. Third, I wanted to check out the new systems and tweaks that have come along <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/04/rise-and-shiny-recap-revisiting-mabinogi/">since I last dived into the game</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/12/rise-and-shiny-revisit-mabinogi-remains-magical/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny revisit: Mabinogi remains magical</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/12/rise-and-shiny-revisit-mabinogi-remains-magical/">Rise and Shiny revisit: Mabinogi remains magical</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 12 May 2013 12:00:00 EST. Break time's over! Now it's time to roll up our sleeves and get back to work building our latest <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure/">Choose My Adventure</a>. The first order of business is to establish the framework for the rest of our <a href="http://www.darkfallonline.com/"><em>Darkfall Unholy Wars</em></a> (mis)adventures.<br />
<br />
Of course, we can't just build willy-nilly; we need to follow a plan. And as with any major construction project, we couldn't really move forward until said plan was OKed by the planning commission. So while we waited for the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/01/choose-my-adventure-pouring-the-foundation-in-darkfall/">foundation</a> to set, we sought approval for which type of structure to base our continuing adventures on. And as is wont to happen with committees, there was trouble coming to a consensus; even though the proposed models were all pretty similar, disagreement arose as to which to pick.<br />
<br />
However, after some debate (one proposal won by only one vote!), we finally got the go ahead: The final word was to build a Mahirim Deadeye. When I first picked up <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/forge"><em>Forge</em></a> on Steam back in the day (when it first hit the Greenlight service), I was hesitant to say the least. The last time I played any sort of game billed as a class-based PvP arena, it was <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fury_%28video_game%29"><em>FURY</em></a> (does anyone else remember that?) and <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Messiah_of_Might_and_Magic">Dark Messiah of Might and Magic</a></em> before that. To say those games were less-than-stellar would be a bit of an understatement. Despite my trepidation, I still snagged the game since it was fairly cheap and I felt there was at least a good deal of potential for it to finally do justice to the concept.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, <em>Forge</em> ended up being released far too early because of (as I understand it) a lack of funds, so many of the advertised features (such as a ranking system, matchmaking, and so forth) were conspicuously absent. So I figured I'd put it on the backburner and check it out once it had received some much-needed polish. So of course I was pretty pleased when <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/dark-vale-games">Dark Vale Games</a> announced that <em>Forge</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/24/forge-rerelease-introduces-tons-of-new-features-75-off-on-stea/">had been "re-released"</a> with many of the missing features in tow, but my initial worries about the game were far from assuaged, and I figured it would just be <em>FURY</em> 2: Electric Boogaloo.<br />
<br />
But man, do I love being proven wrong.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/06/first-impressions-forge/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>First Impressions: Forge</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/06/first-impressions-forge/">First Impressions: Forge</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 06 May 2013 14:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.heroesandgenerals.com/13/en/index.html"><em>Heroes and Generals</em></a> is a new browser-based game set in the wonderfully bright and shiny world of... World War II. OK, so it's really a gritty game, and it's sluggish at best, but I have a feeling that combat during that amazing time was from the "two steps forward, one step back" school of warfare anyway. I tried to keep that in mind as I slogged through round after round of being shot in the head.<br />
<br />
It's not that the game is boring. It's fun-<em>ish</em>, but when I compare it to many other MMOFPS titles, I find it small and slow. It's an instanced-based lobby sort of design. That's not normally a bad thing, and we certainly cover that style of game here on Massively, but this one just sort of felt a bit <em>too</em> small. There's more coming, I hear, so maybe in the future, the game will feel larger.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/05/rise-and-shiny-heroes-and-generals/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny: Heroes and Generals</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/05/rise-and-shiny-heroes-and-generals/">Rise and Shiny: Heroes and Generals</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 05 May 2013 12:00:00 EST. It's relocation time! Although there were plenty of tempting properties spread around various locales to choose from, once the bidding wars began, <a href="http://www.darkfallonline.com/"><em>Darkfall Unholy Wars</em></a> grabbed the lead and refused to let go. So we're packing up our tools and moving to Agon to get this <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure/">Choose My Adventure</a> project started. And considering the whole neighborhood just went through a recent renovation, I'm sure we'll fit right in building our new retreat. Now, we just need... hm, where did we put those blueprints? Do we even have blueprints? No? Well, no matter; you can just give me the instructions as we go. Rome wasn't built in a day, and we've got five more weeks to work together to create this new retreat.<br />
<br />
I've got to tell you, I'm quite excited for this venture. One of the greatest things about the CMA series is that it forces us to finally dive in and check out games we've been wanting to but never quite "found the time." Once it becomes a part of your daily job, you have no choice but to make the time! <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/darkfall">Darkfall</a></em> was always one of those games for me, and my curiosity and interest was piqued even more with <em>Unholy Wars</em>. So let's get this started. First, we need a foundation.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/01/choose-my-adventure-pouring-the-foundation-in-darkfall/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure: Pouring the foundation in Darkfall</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/01/choose-my-adventure-pouring-the-foundation-in-darkfall/">Choose My Adventure: Pouring the foundation in Darkfall</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 01 May 2013 15:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/neverwinter/"><i>Neverwinter's</i></a> launch into open beta began last week, and through the grace of my press account, my <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/11/neverwinter-closes-in-on-another-beta-weekend-with-the-great-wea/">Great Weapon Fighter</a> was lucky enough to begin her digital life alongside players who forked over $199.99 for the Hero of the North Founder's Pack. I lack any of the Founders Pack bonuses, so off my plucky human character went, surrounded on her first day almost exclusively by panther-having Drow.<br />

Another patch day is upon us. Among other things, <a href="https://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2's</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/flame-and-frost">Flame and Frost</a>: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/retribution">Retribution</a> is bringing in a new living story dungeon and some much-needed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/spvp">structured PvP</a> improvements. Over the weekend, members of the press were invited to preview some of the incoming content. I'd like to talk about it with you, so be warned that there are spoilers for the living story dungeon ahead.<br />
<br />
Something that I found particularly interesting about all of this is that the Molten Weapons Facilities dungeon is going to be available for less than two weeks. The dungeon is due to exit on May 12th. I had expected it to be time-limited, of course, but I think I was expecting a little more time than <em>that</em>. Anyway, let's dive right into it.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/30/flameseeker-chronicles-its-time-for-some-retribution-in-guild/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Flameseeker Chronicles: It's time for some retribution in Guild Wars 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/30/flameseeker-chronicles-its-time-for-some-retribution-in-guild/">Flameseeker Chronicles: It's time for some retribution in Guild Wars 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 30 Apr 2013 09:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://warthunder.com/">War Thunder</a></em>, a new instanced-based WWII flying battle, uhm, <em>thingy</em>, didn't really seem that appealing at first. It looks nice, and yes, the planes can be controlled in a few different styles ranging from an FPS twitch style to a more "realistic" mode, but I was worried it would be just another slogging grind until I was able to have any fun. There's some truth behind my worry about the grind, but overall I had an incredible time in the game. The only real shame is that I didn't get to put as much time in it as I would have liked. The game had infrequent connection issues, but when they cropped up, they lasted a while. Even so, each match lasted long enough to give me a pretty good taste of combat.<br />
<br />
I stuck with the "arcade" style of gameplay. It's a simpler way to control the planes that allows players to point the mouse pointer for control. You might need to land for repairs and take off again, but it's as simple as slowing down until you touch down. I started to take the more realistic mode's tutorial, but as soon as it told me I had to manually control much more of the plane's controls, I gave up. Call me a wimp, but I just wanted to <em>shoot planes</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/28/rise-and-shiny-war-thunder/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny: War Thunder</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/28/rise-and-shiny-war-thunder/">Rise and Shiny: War Thunder</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 28 Apr 2013 14:00:00 EST. After <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/26/massivelys-neverwinter-early-access-launch-diary-day-one/">yesterday's initial foray</a> into <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com/"><em>Neverwinter</em></a>, I was eager to get back to it. I was still trying to figure everything out, including frustrating little issues (is there a screenshot key that saves to a folder? Can I keep the little notifications from constantly popping out of the side of the map?). There's that period of acclimation in new games when you're excited but also feel a little lost. I'm guessing it's going to be another day or two before I truly feel comfortable in my <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter/"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> home.<br />
<br />
From what I can figure out, there are six main options for a typical <em>Neverwinter </em>play session. There are general PvE quests, skirmishes (think instanced public quests), zone-wide events, group dungeon runs, Foundry missions, and PvP fights. There's also playing the auction house, crafting, and making your own Foundry missions.<br />
<br />
Yesterday was about the first two, so I decided that the second day would be all about the Foundry. At a certain level or part of the quest line (around level 11), you gain access to daily Foundry quests. These give you astral diamonds as incentive to run player-made content, so I figured I had nothing to lose and everything to gain!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/27/massivelys-neverwinter-launch-diary-day-two/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's Neverwinter early access launch diary: Day two</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/27/massivelys-neverwinter-launch-diary-day-two/">Massively's Neverwinter early access launch diary: Day two</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 27 Apr 2013 14:00:00 EST. <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com/"><em>Neverwinter's</em></a> launch isn't so much a launch as a gradual roll-out that's happening in several phases and operating under the code-name of "open beta." While the doors won't be open for the general public until April 30th, purchasers of the founder's packs are able to get in a few days early. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic">Cryptic's</a> invited the media to join the day one festivities alongside of those who've plunked down $200 for a Hero of the North package, which is how I'm able to bring to you a day-by-day account of the first week of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> live.<br />
<br />
While I've participated in two of the beta weekend events and have been following <em>Neverwinter</em> for a few months now <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter-days/">as part of my column coverage</a>, much of the game is virgin territory to me. I like going into a launch relatively unspoiled (or as unspoiled as a writer who covers MMOs can be), so this launch diary isn't going to be the voice of great experience. It's going to be the voice of experiences. See what I did there?<br />
<br />
Noon on April 25th finally arrived... and we were off to the D&amp;D races!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/26/massivelys-neverwinter-early-access-launch-diary-day-one/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's Neverwinter early access launch diary: Day one</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/26/massivelys-neverwinter-early-access-launch-diary-day-one/">Massively's Neverwinter early access launch diary: Day one</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 26 Apr 2013 13:00:00 EST. Life may be like a box of chocolates, but gaming is like a Do-It-Yourself project. It may not be as mouth-watering an analogy, but it is certainly fitting: MMOs are a giant construction zone where players build their own experiences in a virtual world using tools from the game and their own imagination.<br />
<br />
Each project is a unique undertaking, bearing the personal touches of the builder, whether the builder is an individual or a group like a guild. Some players prefer to build a single residence and settle in, while others enjoy moving from project to project, exploring new territory and testing new tools. Me? I tend toward the former; I'm the kind who tinkers around in one place over a long period of time. But all that's about to change. Again.<br />
<br />
That's right, folks; it's my turn to break ground on yet another <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure/">Choose My Adventure</a>! For the next six weeks I am leaving the comfy confines of my familiar surroundings and allowing you to direct my next MMO project. Yes, my dear Massively friends, you will be the foreman of this endeavor, determining every step of the construction, from where I'll build my newest experience to what tools I'll get to use.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/24/choose-my-adventure-extreme-diy-makeover-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure: Extreme DIY makeover edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/24/choose-my-adventure-extreme-diy-makeover-edition/">Choose My Adventure: Extreme DIY makeover edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 24 Apr 2013 11:00:00 EST. Welcome to my <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/prime-world">Prime World</a></em> castle! Enjoy the mountain air, the multiple residential buildings, the fountain and bench I decided I had room for, and the general atmosphere. No, really, enjoy them now because you sadly can't even see them in the game. While a few of my mates and I had the pleasure of experiencing <em>Prime World</em> via the English client on the live Russian server, there were a few oddities that popped up during our prime-binge, and I'm not referring to my Russian comrades.<br />
<br />
For those who haven't heard of <em>Prime World</em>, let me giver you a primer: It's set in a fantasy world where a new material called "prime" has revolutionized both the scientific and natural world. Players are tasked with building their own little base to gather resources, make friends, hire heroes, and fight for more prime against the other faction (unless your side currently heavily outnumbers the other faction, in which case the game allows you the option to fight other people of your faction in order to speed up the queues). Really, it's like <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/StarCraft/">StarCraft</a></em> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/league-of-legends/">League of Legends</a> </em>had a baby and asked Facebook to raise the kid, except that you needn't make use of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/07/e3-2011-nival-announces-facebook-integrated-mmo-prime-world/">Facebook integration</a> to play the game and can opt to use an email address instead. However, you'll still find a need for a social network when it comes to the non-MOBA part of the game.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/23/finding-the-world-in-prime-world/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Finding the 'world' in Prime World</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/23/finding-the-world-in-prime-world/">Finding the 'world' in Prime World</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 23 Apr 2013 15:00:00 EST. There are a lot of MMOs out there. A <em>lot</em>. Sometimes I rattle off a list of MMOs during a conversation with fellow fans and they look at me as if I have butter pouring from my fingertips. They don't believe it, but they know it's happening. There are <em>that</em> many MMOs out there? Yes, there are. There are literally thousands in the world, hundreds in the United States. Out of all of those many different titles that I have played and come across, I like to say that most aren't really bad or horrible, but just... the same. Bland, boring, vanilla, dull. I like to throw the figure "80 percent" around to represent how many of them are just <em>ugh</em>.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.theauroraworld.com/"><em>The Aurora World</em></a> is an MMO. It has systems. It has skills to learn, and pets and monsters and quests and all of those trademarks that have, unfortunately, given MMO developers blanks to fill in on a checklist that is titled "MMORPG." There are a few tricks up the game's sleeves, but only a few. Actually, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/The-Aurora-World"><em>The Aurora World</em></a> reminds me of one of my favorites, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/zentia/"><em>Zentia</em></a>, but it lacks the soul that made me love <em>Zentia</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/21/rise-and-shiny-the-aurora-world/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny: The Aurora World</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/21/rise-and-shiny-the-aurora-world/">Rise and Shiny: The Aurora World</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 21 Apr 2013 14:00:00 EST. During the last week, I've witnessed two excellent unions: My good friend married his college sweetheart, and a MOBA reached out to the ranks of turn-based gaming. Sure, the former had an open bar, but no amount of free booze can quench my desire for something new within the MOBA genre. Enter <em><a href="https://arenaofheroes.com">Arena of Heroes</a></em>, a new turn-based free-to-play MOBA that can be played on PC, Mac, iPad, and eventually, on Ouya, iOS, and Android.<br />
<br />
I spent the morning with Sneaky Games CEO David Godwin and Zattikka Director of Product Alexandra Tinsman to find out why this game will make me bring my iPad everywhere I go.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/19/hands-on-with-arena-of-heroes-turn-based-gameplay/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hands-on with Arena of Heroes' turn-based gameplay</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/19/hands-on-with-arena-of-heroes-turn-based-gameplay/">Hands-on with Arena of Heroes' turn-based gameplay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 19 Apr 2013 13:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.duelofchampions.com/en/index.aspx">Might and Magic: Duel of Champions</a></em> is a new collectible card game brought to us by <a href="http://www.ubi.com/US/">Ubisoft Quebec</a>. Some folks might say that trading card games are a dime a dozen and that once you've played one, you've played them all. But I think the genre is always moving forward and expanding, introducing new designs and interesting ways to play, which is true of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/might-and-magic-duel-of-champions/"><em>Might and Magic</em></a>'s latest go at the TCG market. During my tour, I found myself up against producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/stephane-jankowski/">Stephane Jankowski</a>. Unfortunately for me, he is no stranger to the game. He takes it quite seriously, going so far as to "go easy" on me so that I was not embarrassed. Little did he know that I am a noob at every game out there, so no harm was done.<br />
<br />
<em>Might and Magic: Duel of Champions</em> is a great game for those who want not only more strategy but also a faster pace. The tutorial walked me through some of the basics, but I learned more in the hour I played with Stephane than I had playing during the previous week. I'm doing <a href="http://www.darkfallonline.com"><em>Darkfall Unholy Wars</em></a> wrong.<br />
<br />
See, I'm one of those sandbox carebears who could not care less about PvP. I'll attempt to defend myself if attacked, and I'll add another body to the zerg if I'm in a clan or whatever, but I don't seek out conflict with other players. I mention this because that attitude obviously informs everything I write about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/darkfall"><em>Darkfall</em></a>, which, at its core, is a great big high fantasy murder simulator.<br />
<br />
Yes, the game has crafting, harvesting, player housing, and better PvE than it's given credit for, but on some level all of this stuff exists to power the FFA PvP meatgrinder that in turn attempts to satiate the bloodlust of <a href="http://www.aventurine.gr">Aventurine's</a> target demographic.<br />
<br />
And would you believe that despite that, <em>Darkfall</em> is still one of this carebear's favorite MMORPGs?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/18/massivelys-darkfall-launch-week-diary-day-two/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's Darkfall launch week diary: Day two</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/18/massivelys-darkfall-launch-week-diary-day-two/">Massively's Darkfall launch week diary: Day two</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 18 Apr 2013 12:30:00 EST. <em>Captain's Log, Stardate 86291.3. My hearing with Starfleet Command resulted in a promotion to Commander, command of a new ship, and full command of the USS Xiang Yu pending the new ship's completion. It also resulted in a trip to the infirmary after I passed out in shock.<br />
<br />
After the Xiang Yu's several military deployments, my new mission aboard the ship is much simpler. Despite Starfleet's growing data about the Gamma and Delta quadrants, there remain large stretches of the Alpha Quadrant yet unexplored. My crew will be seeking out intelligent life within these areas of space, seeking to establish peaceful relationships and expand the Federation.<br />
<br />
It's been only a short time since I was first placed in temporary command, but it seems to have stuck. Our ship's cannons are ready, our scanners have been upgraded, and our expanded crew roster is acclimating.<br />
<br />
There's an entire galaxy to explore out there. I look forward to going where no one has gone before.</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/17/choose-my-adventure-star-trek-online-vi-the-rediscovered-coun/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure: Star Trek Online VI - The Rediscovered Country</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/17/choose-my-adventure-star-trek-online-vi-the-rediscovered-coun/">Choose My Adventure: Star Trek Online VI - The Rediscovered Country</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 17 Apr 2013 19:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.darkfallonline.com"><em>Darkfall Unholy Wars</em></a>' April 2013 launch was quite a bit like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/darkfall"><em>Darkfall's</em></a> February 2009 launch. For me, at any rate. One crucial difference was that this time I was actually able to purchase <a href="http://www.aventurine.gr">Aventurine's</a> fantasy sandbox title even though I wasn't able to log into it.<br />
<br />
Four years ago, finding a digital copy of <em>Darkfall</em> was damn near impossible. Fast forward to the present and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aventurine">AV</a> has improved its billing apparatus but certainly not its delivery mechanism. After nearly three hours, <em>DFUW's</em> patcher managed to pull down 90 MB out of 6487. I switched to the torrent download, and while it was faster, I still had to leave it overnight. So technically this is day two impressions even though it's day one for yours truly.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/17/massivelys-darkfall-launch-week-diary-day-one/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's Darkfall launch week diary: Day one</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/17/massivelys-darkfall-launch-week-diary-day-one/">Massively's Darkfall launch week diary: Day one</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 17 Apr 2013 12:30:00 EST. I have to admit, I felt a combination of excitement and fear when I was tasked with covering the newest <a href="http://raiderz.perfectworld.com/"><em>RaiderZ</em></a> expansion, <em><a href="http://raiderz.perfectworld.com/news/?p=810791">Broken Silence</a></em>, because I knew that I would be challenged in a few ways. First, I had to get used to the game again. I've played it off and on and have enjoyed it until around level 10, but I am no expert. I had already experienced the fantastic non-instanced combat that the game is known for, but I still had a long way to go. Second, I knew that the game would physically punish me. After years of playing games, painting, and drawing, I can easily be forced to soak my forearms in icy water after a session of action-based gaming. Lastly, I knew I would be given a higher-level character and needed to get used to how that particular character performed. The brilliant thing about action-based games is that the person behind the keyboard matters as much as amazing armor or incredible spells. I'd have to sharpen up.<br />
<br />
I logged into my character and discovered just how fun this game still is.<br />

How much of an expansion can you really get from one new planet and five new levels?<br />
<br />
I've been subscribing to <a href="http://www.swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> since launch day, so buying <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Rise-of-the-Hutt-Cartel/">Rise of the Hutt Cartel</a></em> wasn't exactly a difficult decision. I like the game, I'm pleased with it, and I'm going to pick up the expansion. But the pre-launch marketing for the expansion looked pretty sparse. A new planet was nice, and a level cap raise was great, but it seemed very low-key even for the price point. Ten bucks for one new area and more leveling felt thin.<br />
<br />
After a week on Makeb, I can comfortably say that it was worth the price of entry. There have been a lot of changes made to the game with the expansion and its connected patch, and with only a handful of exceptions, those improvements make the game universally better. And it all starts with a reversal of the game's status quo.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/15/first-impressions-swtors-rise-of-the-hutt-cartel/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>First Impressions: SWTOR's Rise of the Hutt Cartel</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/15/first-impressions-swtors-rise-of-the-hutt-cartel/">First Impressions: SWTOR's Rise of the Hutt Cartel</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 15 Apr 2013 10:00:00 EST. I have a real love for finding tiny, unknown, indie titles -- especially ones that are obviously made for younger gamers -- and playing them for a write-up. It's one of the perks of the job; I get to dig up these gems and tell thousands of people about them. Games like <a href="http://dinostorm.com/"><em>Dino Storm</em></a> also serve to remind me about why I got into blogging about games before I was ever paid to do it. There are virtual <em>worlds</em> to discover out there, and I find that thrilling. I especially like it when they boast this level of quality.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dino-storm/"><em>Dino Storm</em></a> might not challenge a more mature player, but it's surprisingly complex. It's got everything it needs to be considered a full-fledged MMO, but it also keeps in mind that younger players need a little help along the way. You'll play the role of a cowboy or girl who rides around on the backs of well-animated dinosaurs ranging from tiny to massive, and you'll also hunt after all sorts of quests and goods.<br />
<br />
I did have a few small issues with the game, but the development team seemed willing and ready to patch them up.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/14/rise-and-shiny-dino-storm/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny: Dino Storm</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/14/rise-and-shiny-dino-storm/">Rise and Shiny: Dino Storm</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 14 Apr 2013 12:00:00 EST. <em>Captain's Log, Stardate 86273.2. I make this entry knowing that this may be my final entry as captain of the USS Xiang Yu. In the event that the worst comes to pass, this will serve as my final record.<br />
<br />
Three days ago, I received a priority message from Starfleet Command ordering me to investigate an uncharted region of space off of the Hromi Cluster. Once the ship had reached the assigned coordinates, our warp core suffered an unexpected failure, stranding us with only auxiliary power. With no means to contact Starfleet, I ordered the evacuation of all non-senior staff on shuttlepods.<br />
<br />
After two days, we realized that the cause of the failure was sabotage caused by an Undine operative who had replaced our Operations officer. While we were able to repair the damage and neutralize the operative, we learned that many of the shuttlepods had already been rigged to plot random courses and then shut down. I am returning to Starfleet now to report on these events and face a potential court martial for my failures.</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/10/choose-my-adventure-star-trek-online-v-the-almost-final-insta/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure: Star Trek Online V - The Almost-Final Installment</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/10/choose-my-adventure-star-trek-online-v-the-almost-final-insta/">Choose My Adventure: Star Trek Online V - The Almost-Final Installment</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 10 Apr 2013 19:00:00 EST. <a href="http://ageofwushu.com"><em>Age of Wushu</em></a> just launched publicly today, and as you read this, thousands of players are getting into the game for the very first time. For a lot of you first-time readers, you might be wondering what the heck is this game, why should you play it, and what are some of the community resources for the game?<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.com/tag/age-of-wushu"><em>Age of Wushu</em></a> is an open-world PvP sandbox set in a fictional Ming Dynasty China where traditional MMO elements like sorcery and character levels are eschewed for martial arts and proficiency in a wide variety of different skills. I'm fond of saying that <em>Wushu</em> is "like <a href="http://eve-online.com"><em>EVE</em></a> in China." Many of <em>AoW's</em> features are similar to <a href="http://massively.com/tag/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a>'s systems, including an emphasis on leveling breadth versus depth, a true player economy, and social maneuvering and backstabbing. At the same time, <em>Wushu</em> is a fundamentally different creature, with skill-based gameplay and a much clunkier interface. It's also a bit simpler than <em>EVE</em>, but the barrier of entry is still pretty high.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.com/category/the-art-of-wushu">The Art of Wushu</a> column is about lowering that bar a bit, and I'm simultaneously proud and sad to say that the English <a href="http://ageofwushu.wikia.com/wiki/Age_of_Wushu_Wiki">fan-made wiki</a> still currently provides much less in-depth information than this column does. As soon as I knew that I was going to be covering <a href="http://scarletblade.aeriagames.com/"><em>Scarlet Blade</em></a>, the new title published by <a href="http://www.aeriagames.com/">Aeria Games</a>, I decided that I was not going to dedicate 1,000 words or so to discussing just how stupidly offensive the game is. I'll cover the issue of sexism in gaming through other avenues because I know that there are generally two types of players in MMOs: those who think this is a sexist industry and those who don't care. I will, however, concentrate on the gameplay. I am always ready to volunteer and cover weird or icky games like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/scarlet-blade/"><em>Scarlet Blade</em></a>. After all, I can't comment on a game I haven't played. What I found wasn't really surprising, but it was relatively confusing.<br />

It may seem like a while has passed since we last experienced <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-steam/"><em>City of Steam</em></a>, the fantasy steampunk MMORPG that fits in your browser. That's because it has! The game's last <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/12/city-of-steam-double-feature-a-beta-trailer-and-a-steam-greenli/">closed beta testing</a> round was back in December, and fans have been eagerly waiting to get back into the city-state of Nexus. Of course there has been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/31/city-of-steams-bestiary-gives-pre-launch-advantage/">some</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/02/mechanist-says-no-to-huge-pauldrons-revamps-city-of-steam-npc-d/">news</a> to tide us over in the meantime while developers have been turning all of that beta feedback into fixes and updates, but that's not the same; people want to play. Luckily, it's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013">GDC </a>to the rescue!<br />
<br />
While the rest of the world won't actually get to access <em>City of Steam</em> until it launches open beta (which is anticipated to be within the next two months!), I was able to dive in and explore the fruits of the devs' winter labors. And let me tell you, they've put their time to good use! I met with Communications Manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Gabriel-Laforge/">Gabriel Laforge</a> and Operations Director Andrew Woodruff from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mechanist-games">Mechanist Games</a> who showed off all the work that has gone into the game since the beta closed, from graphics to crafting to airships. They also highlighted the game's cash shop and revealed numerous rewards players can earn simply by playing the game.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/05/gdc-2013-city-of-steam-demo-showcases-crafting-and-other-stream/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: City of Steam demo showcases crafting and other streamlined features</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/05/gdc-2013-city-of-steam-demo-showcases-crafting-and-other-stream/">GDC 2013: City of Steam demo showcases crafting and other streamlined features</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 05 Apr 2013 16:30:00 EST. You know what? <a href="http://www.defiance.com"><em>Defiance's</em></a> PvP is pretty enjoyable. Most of that enjoyment stems from my ability to actually kill people, contrary to typical MMO themeparks where I stand no chance against gear grinders and theorycrafters who have bested me before I even manage to tab target them.<br />
<br />
Here you have to aim, dodge, roll, reload, and do all that crazy skill-based stuff that shooters make you do, and while my K/D ratio is reminding me of the fact that I'm getting old and slow, it's still been a blast. Last night I dipped my toes into something called Shadow War, which is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/defiance"><em>Defiance's</em></a> answer to open world PvP.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/04/massivelys-defiance-launch-week-diary-day-three/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's Defiance launch week diary: Day three</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/04/massivelys-defiance-launch-week-diary-day-three/">Massively's Defiance launch week diary: Day three</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 04 Apr 2013 12:30:00 EST. <em>Captain's log, Stardate 86253.9. After collecting stolen goods from several Ferengi traders in the area, the USS Xiang Yu has been sent on a dangerous mission to retrieve a defector from the Klingon Empire. The only expected resistance is a handful of ground forces and a lone potential cruiser.<br />
<br />
Following this mission we are set for shore leave for at least a week, which should give the crew a chance to relax and unwind. Unfortunately, our shore leave will be confined to a dingy and unpleasant trading station, thus rather curtailing my hopes.<br />
<br />
Morale has been low following an escalating series of minor incidents, including a shipwide system failure caused by my first officer attempting to rewire the internal chronometer. As it turns out, she was submitting her latest duty officer report one day late and was worried I would have her demoted. When we talk about getting our hands on a game at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013/">GDC</a> for a little playtime, we don't usually get to literally grasp said game in our fingers. But that's exactly what happened when I tested out <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/vendetta-online">Vendetta Online</a></em> on an iPad 3; instead of just relating to the space-based sandbox through the standard accessories like mouse, keyboard, or joystick, I held the entirety of the game universe in the palms of my hands. My own 10 digits were the only accessories. And the experience impressed me!<br />
<br />
I had the opportunity to sit down with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-bergman">John Bergman</a>, Founder and CEO of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/guild-software">Guild Software</a>, to talk about the new iOS platform for <em>Vendetta Online</em> while doing my best <a href="http://i1.cdnds.net/12/31/618x464/movies_goose_top_gun_1.jpg">Goose impersonation</a> (he's way better than Maverick) playing it.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/gdc-2013-hands-on-with-vendetta-online-on-the-ipad/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: Hands-on with Vendetta Online on the iPad</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/gdc-2013-hands-on-with-vendetta-online-on-the-ipad/">GDC 2013: Hands-on with Vendetta Online on the iPad</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 03 Apr 2013 18:30:00 EST. Welcome to day two of Massively's <a href="http://www.defiance.com"><em>Defiance</em></a> launch week diary. I've put a little over seven hours into <a href="http://www.trionworlds.com">Trion's</a> MMO shooter thus far, so that zomg-it's-a-new-game! glow has worn off and I'm able to see things more objectively (i.e., find things to criticize). That said, I'm still having a good bit of fun, so join me after the cut to find out why.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/massivelys-defiance-launch-week-diary-day-two/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's Defiance launch week diary: Day two</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/massivelys-defiance-launch-week-diary-day-two/">Massively's Defiance launch week diary: Day two</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 03 Apr 2013 12:30:00 EST. I'm an <a href="http://www.defiance.com/en/game/overview/what-is-an-ark-hunter/">ark hunter</a>, or so they tell me. They being the ruggedly handsome NPCs on display in <a href="http://www.defiance.com"><em>Defiance's</em></a> opening cutscene. There's a gruff military man, a captain I think, and some balding suit with trendy eyewear named <a href="http://vonbachindustries.com/en/">Von Bach</a>.<br />
<br />
There's a bunch of frenzied activity on board the stratocarrier New Freedom, and I pass by a familiar roughneck and a red-haired alien girl that I've seen before in <em>Defiance's</em> ubiquitous television commercials. I'm a human male because I'm one of those weirdos who plays to real-world type in video games. I've got corn-rows here, though, blonde ones, and a face that only a mother could love. Much like my real face, I didn't have a lot of say in the matter because <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/defiance"><em>Defiance's</em></a> character customization is rather bare bones. There's Human or Irathient, male or female. After that there's a choice of four origins: Veteran, Survivalist, Outlaw, and Machinist.<br />
<br />
I have a hard time with this because if the earth really were on the edge of sci-fi post-apocalyptic alien invasion extinction, I would no doubt be some sort of grizzled Survivalist/Outlaw/Machinist hybrid. Though this isn't a class-based game from what I hear, for now I have to choose.<br />
<br />
It's Survivalist.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/02/alter-ego-a-defiance-launch-week-diary/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's Defiance launch week diary: Day one</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/02/alter-ego-a-defiance-launch-week-diary/">Massively's Defiance launch week diary: Day one</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 02 Apr 2013 11:30:00 EST. April is almost upon us, which means that the <em>first day</em> of April is almost upon us, which means that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/april-fools-day">April Fools' Day</a> is almost upon us. In the past, the folks at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> have proven themselves fond of celebrating this occasion, which has given fans high hopes for continued trolling in the world of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>. Since March's patch, strange things have been appearing that all seem to hint at some sort of April Fools' joke: Super Adventure Box achievements on the hero panel, mysterious Continue Coins falling out of chests, and a new range of weapon skins added to the sPvP weapon pane.<br />
<br />
Of course, it's been pointed out to me that perhaps the most delicious joke of all would be to put in all those clues and then have no actual prank. I can almost <em>taste </em>the rage of fans who had compulsively run characters through jumping puzzles for days in an attempt to stock up on Continue Coins that suddenly turned out to be worthless.<br />
<br />
Fortunately (or not, depending on your sense of humor), that's not the case at all. <a href="https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/april-2013/">The Super Adventure Box is real</a>, and it's almost time for you to start playing it. A few months ago, I dived into <a href="http://www.salemthegame.com/"><em>Salem</em></a>, a hardcore sandbox MMO that promises actual permadeath. That means if your character is killed while in game, he or she stays dead <em>and</em> loses everything. Not of your possible scores of skills are passed on, all items are lost and your homestead -- similar to a deed in <a href="http://www.wurmonline.com"><em>Wurm Online</em></a> -- can be destroyed. Heck, your homestead can be destroyed even if you're <em>not</em> dead. People can literally block your path, call you names, and attack you over and over. It makes me cry!<br />
<br />
Nah, it's not as bad as it sounds. It never is. If there is one thing I have learned over the years, it's that you should really try a game for yourself before you believe everything you hear about it. Don't worry about trolls or griefers because the worst that can happen to you is that you end up leaving the game to find a better one. That's why we're called <em>gamers</em>.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Salem"><em>Salem</em></a> is actually about 50% killer and 50% silliness. I don't want to describe the killer part as "bad" because there is something the game is offering that so many others are not, and that's real danger and actual permadeath.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/31/rise-and-shiny-revisiting-salem/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny: Revisiting Salem</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/31/rise-and-shiny-revisiting-salem/">Rise and Shiny: Revisiting Salem</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 31 Mar 2013 12:00:00 EST. Everyone at the completely fictional Massively office seems to have some kind of schoolgirl crush on <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/carbine-studios">Carbine Studios'</a> quirky upcoming sci-fi title <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/wildstar">WildStar</a></em>, and I can understand why. The setting is fresh, melding some aspects of our favorite sci-fi properties (cough Firefly cough) with a a healthy dose of fantasy and a not insignificant amount of witty comedy, and the list of features the game boasts is rather extensive. I mean, did you even see <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/22/pax-east-2013-a-first-look-at-wildstars-high-low-and-housing/">that housing trailer</a>? Holy wow, guys.<br />
<br />
In spite of all of that, though, I was still a little cautious about giving in to the hype. After all, I'm sure there's not an MMO fan in existence who hasn't gotten super excited about a game and become a devoted fanboy only to have his hopes and expectations shattered when the game didn't live up to the hype. So I let myself be excited, but reservedly so, until I could get my hands on the game for myself to complement <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/23/pax-east-2013-hands-on-with-wildstars-spellslinger-and-warrior/">Eliot's earlier PAX hands-on with the game</a>. As it so happens, on the last day of <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/pax-east-2013">PAX East</a>, I got to do just that. Though it was only a short 25-minute demo (thank goodness -- otherwise the lines would have circled the convention center), I think I was able to get a pretty solid idea of what we can expect from <em>WildStar</em>, and let me tell you right now, we can expect some great things.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/30/pax-2013-a-second-hands-on-with-wildstars-draken-stalker/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX East 2013: A second hands-on with WildStar's Draken Stalker</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/30/pax-2013-a-second-hands-on-with-wildstars-draken-stalker/">PAX East 2013: A second hands-on with WildStar's Draken Stalker</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 30 Mar 2013 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gazillion-entertainment/">Gazillion Entertainment</a> made a splash at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-east-2013">PAX East</a>, arriving with the big announcement that <a href="http://marvelheroes.com"><em>Marvel Heroes</em></a> will be launching on June 4th. In addition, the team gave new details about endgame content, PvP, and special "ultimate powers" for each hero.<br />
<br />
During the convention, Massively had a chance to sit down with VP of marketing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/leo-olebe/">Leo Olebe</a> and CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/David-Brevik/">David Brevik</a> to get a look at the state of the game, including some brand-new content that the devs have just added to <em>Marvel Heroes</em>. What did we see during our hands-on with the game? Let's just say that rampaging dinosaurs and "Hulk Smash" were but the tip of the iceberg.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/marvel-heroes-2/">Marvel Heroes</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/marvel-heroes-2/#5775246"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/hellskitchenrooftopinstance1080p_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/marvel-heroes-2/#5775247"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/im3channeledenergybeam_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/marvel-heroes-2/#5775248"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/msmarvelwolverineftstryker-21080p_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/marvel-heroes-2/#5775250"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/punisherdaredevilmutatemarsh-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/marvel-heroes-2/#5775251"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/thingpunisherironmanpyro-41080p_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/pax-east-2013-hands-on-with-marvel-heroes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX East 2013: Hands-on with Marvel Heroes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/pax-east-2013-hands-on-with-marvel-heroes/">PAX East 2013: Hands-on with Marvel Heroes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Mar 2013 14:00:00 EST. Last fall, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/runewaker">Runewaker</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> announced <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dragons-prophet">Dragon's Prophet</a></em>, a free-to-play fantasy game focused on -- you guessed it -- dragons. Since then, we've been treated to various videos detailing the classes, the starter zones, and other gameplay. Just last week the game entered <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/14/dragons-prophet-flies-into-na-closed-beta-march-19/">closed beta</a> in North America, allowing select folks the chance to get in and test out the current stage of the game.<br />
<br />
This week, I joined those folks in-game during my hands-on and demo at this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013/">GDC</a>. I was also able to talk with senior producer Todd Carson and associate producer Rod Haza as they demonstrated different aspects of the game at the convention. What delectable tidbits of information about classes, housing, and (of course) dragons did I uncover? The answer awaits after the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/">Dragon's Prophet</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/#5773073"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/windhunters-hold-main-hut_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/#5773074"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/windhunters-hold-main-gate_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/#5773075"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/windhunter-troll-mage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/#5773076"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/underworld-port-airship_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/#5773077"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/tahkar-village-lake_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/gdc-2013-dragons-prophet-demo-and-hands-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: Dragon's Prophet demo and hands-on</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/gdc-2013-dragons-prophet-demo-and-hands-on/">GDC 2013: Dragon's Prophet demo and hands-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Mar 2013 09:00:00 EST. A few months ago, when New Year's resolutions came around, I decided to take broad, sweeping strides outside of my comfort zone -- I decided to play more <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/fps/">FPS</a> games. Long have I lingered in the comforting bosom of tab targeting, cast bars, and kill-10-boars. So when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/renaissance-heroes/"><i>Renaissance Heroes</i></a>, a newly released <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/f2p/">free-to-play</a> FPS, came to my attention, I thought I might have finally found an FPS game that's more my style, that style being "shoot people in the face with crossbows."<br />
<br />
I was not disappointed.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/ascots-and-crossbows-hands-on-with-renaissance-heroes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ascots and crossbows: Hands-on with Renaissance Heroes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/ascots-and-crossbows-hands-on-with-renaissance-heroes/">Ascots and crossbows: Hands-on with Renaissance Heroes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 27 Mar 2013 16:00:00 EST. <em>Captain's log, Stardate 86234.1. The USS Xiang Yu is reporting back to Starfleet Headquarters for a debriefing following a mission containing a cascading temporal anomaly linked to the ship's warp signature. My first officer has been asked to give a report on the observable effects of the phenomenon and what might be done in the future to prevent a similar incident from reoccurring.<br />
<br />
During what should have been a fairly simple search and rescue assignment, the Xiang Yu was trapped in a repeated cycle of destruction and temporal displacement. Upon closer examination, my chief engineer identified a concentration of chroniton signatures that corresponded with the impact points of torpedoes during an earlier engagement with the Orion Syndicate. Her theory is that these weapons were somehow responsible for this phenomenon.<br />
<br />
My first officer, meanwhile, is convinced that interpersonal relationships are in some way connected to this incident. I am occasionally unclear why Admiral Celeste encourages her in this fashion.</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/choose-my-adventure-star-trek-online-iii-the-search-for-the-f/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure: Star Trek Online III - The search for the Foundry</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/choose-my-adventure-star-trek-online-iii-the-search-for-the-f/">Choose My Adventure: Star Trek Online III - The search for the Foundry</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 27 Mar 2013 12:00:00 EST. We just learned of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Infinite-Crisis/">Infinite Crisis</a>' </em>existence on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/25/turbine-entertainment-unveils-infinite-crisis-a-dc-universe-mob/">Monday</a>, but don't expect a long wait to get your hands on the game's various DC Comics characters. The new title is well beyond the here's-an-idea-for-you stage -- in fact, it's already playable!<br />
<br />
So what did this MOBA noob think of the game? Does it do justice to the Justice League? When is beta going to happen so others can get in on the action? And how on earth did <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine-entertainment/">Turbine</a> keep <em>Infinite Crisis </em>a secret so far into its development? After my play session I sat down with Creative Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cardell-Kerr/">Cardell Kerr</a> to discuss some of these burning questions.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/gdc-2013-hands-on-with-infinite-crisis/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: Hands-on with Infinite Crisis</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/gdc-2013-hands-on-with-infinite-crisis/">GDC 2013: Hands-on with Infinite Crisis</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 27 Mar 2013 08:30:00 EST.
