If you've been enjoying Warhammer Online over in Europe, it's been impossible to miss all of the information about Mythic Entertainment taking over the game's operation. Much as it did with the Dark Age of Camelot transition earlier this year, Mythic is replacing GOA as the direct operator. The team behind the game has been trying to keep the process of transition as transparent as possible, and the result has been that it appears to be clear sailing for the switched operators, according to the most recent announcement.

Although the original timeline called for the transition to run until July 7th, it appears that the change has been completed, with all existing accounts transferred over with the suffix "_EUR." (So "Facemasher" would be "Facemasher_EUR" to log in.) While the team doesn't anticipate any problems, it's continuing to improve French and German customer service bases. As such, the team is asking for players to submit English requests when possible during the transition period. Warhammer Online players should be pleased at the smoothness of the transition, but are still advised to keep their eyes open on the off chance something went strange.
Update on the Warhammer Online transition for European players originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 06 Jul 2010 10:00:00 EST. From Mythic Entertainment to EA Mythic to Mythic Entertainment to (now) BioWare Mythic, Warhammer Online's developer has seen its fair share of name changes. Change is the theme of the June Producer's Letter, as Carrie Gouskos not only announced the new name for the merged developer, but a number of other changes for WAR as well.

The takeover of Europe's WAR operations from GOA was a significant topic. Mythic is hosting the EU side on five servers: two English, two German and one French. "We're overjoyed to welcome our European players and are looking forward to more direct interaction with them," Carrie said.

She also pointed to the future with the upcoming 1.3.6 patch, which includes a nifty feature called Against All Odds that rewards outnumbered armies with up to 400% more experience, renown and influence in RvR lakes. Other upcoming changes include armor appearance slots, tweaks to open RvR, and a forge to alter the stat bonuses of city armor. You can read the full Producer's Letter here!
Despite what your grade school friends told you, there are take backs in life. Last week we brought you the breaking news that GOA was transferring Europe's Warhammer Online operations to Mythic Entertainment, a significant event considering that GOA's been handling WAR on the continent since 2006. Today Mythic posted a rather extensive "WAR EU Takeback FAQ" which is as informative as it is rhymey.

Fortunately, it does not appear as though the transfer will be too disruptive to current players. Characters, levels, gear, servers and friends lists will remain intact, and no new client download is required. Mythic will also be hosting German and French-specific servers for any wishing to play in a particular language environment. However, all players are asked to register for a new Mythic account, and will need to make sure that their payment plans and options are set up accordingly in it.

Mythic's also stated that they have long-term plans to allow players to transfer to and from North American servers, although no decision's been made regarding transferring to non-English speaking serves. The transfer begins tomorrow, June 29th, and will continue through July 7th. For the rest of the details, or just to settle your mind, read through the Takeback FAQ over at Warhammer Online's site.
Passing the torch: WAR's GOA-to-Mythic transfer explained originally appeared on Massively on Mon, 28 Jun 2010 18:00:00 EST. Earlier this year, Mythic Entertainment moved to take over the management of Dark Age of Camelot in Europe from publisher GOA, and this week we've learned that they're doing the same for Warhammer Online. In a brief announcement on WAR's EU site, GOA states that the full operation of the game is being handed over to Mythic. This includes a migration of all character data from GOA's servers to Mythic's. GOA has had the publishing rights to WAR since 2006.

The history of GOA and Warhammer Online is a rocky one, especially around the launch of the game in 2008. However, they retained the right to publish and run the game in Europe, and proceeded without any other severe bumps since then (OK, maybe a few bumps). GOA's parting note with the players is quietly upbeat: "We have enjoyed a lot of great times with you. Over the past couple of years we have fostered a fantastically vibrant and active community; we saw the world's first Tchar'Zanek and Karl Franz kills pre 1.3.5 and hosted undeniably some of the most professional guilds to ever play WAR."

While this undoubtedly comes as a shock to many EU players, the bottom line is that WAR will continue to run in the region. The WAR EU site promises more information and a transition FAQ in upcoming days, so stay tuned as we keep abreast of this developing situation.
Dark Age of Camelot is under new management -- sort of. Actually, it's under new management that could more properly be termed old management, or maybe it would be better termed the original management... it's a bit complicated. After many years of the European branch of the dark Arthurian MMO being managed by GOA, the game has come under the direct control of Electronic Arts. Mythic Entertainment will be taking over the game's operation in Europe... which is what they're already doing with the game in North America, seeing as how the game is originally theirs. Like we said, the pedigree is a bit odd.

For the many players affected by the change, a pre-emptive olive branch is being offered -- all Dark Age of Camelot players being brought under their aegis will be receiving a free month of play time. The game will also be patched up to match the current North American version. No word is officially given on why the change in management was deemed necessary, although speculation is certainly possible. What this will mean for the game's future is uncertain, but the offer of a free month of play certainly helps take the edge off, as does the promise of improved synchronization between both regions.
Electronic Arts takes over Dark Age of Camelot in Europe originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 13 Feb 2010 10:00:00 EST. Mythic Entertainment today announced that GOA's license to publish and maintain Dark Age of Camelot in Europe will not be renewed, and that Mythic plans to take hold of the reins for European support. The news post says the transition will occur "in the coming weeks" which hopefully means a gradual shift is being planned, rather than a sudden one.

The developer makes sure to assuage any fears of rocky times ahead by saying, "We are currently working with GOA to take over operation of the game and its European community, and will soon be providing details about pressing player questions such as existing subscriptions, character transfers, game versions, localization, and more." It sounds like everything is well under control, but an effort like this is most certainly a delicate one. Hopefully things go smoothly, as we'd rather report good news over bad.
Mythic taking over DAoC Europe originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 07 Jan 2010 20:00:00 EST. Today, we are getting word that a big part of patch 1.3, an extensive combat and careers update, is being stripped out to ensure Mythic stay on schedule and deliver a polished product.

In a bit of an "Oops" move, GOA delivered the unfortunate news before Mythic this morning. The original combat and careers updates proved to be a bit too ambitious with everything else going into this patch, so they decided to pull the changes out for now and introduce them in the next patch for fear of hurting the game.

Player opinion seems split. Some testers were extremely vocal about their dislike for the sweeping career changes on the public test server and applaud the delay for more polish. Others are questioning why Mythic is trying to cram so many changes into monster patches and wish they would release smaller patches more frequently like they did in the past.
Combat and careers update stripped from WAR 1.3 patch originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 20:30:00 EST. The folks at GOA put together an extremely thorough strategy guide for RvR teamplay in Warhammer Online. It covers all the basics from how to form a group to suggesting various ideal career combinations, but it doesn't end there. They're just getting warmed up!

The guide discusses the pros of assigning a group leader and lays out some general guidelines a good leader should follow. It also suggests how a strong group will follow that leader while remaining alert for danger and constantly communicating with each other. Strategic offensive and defensive positioning for various career archetypes is covered in depth. The guide suggests that as important as it is for you to know the roles of you and your allies, it is equally as important to study your enemy and learn their various strengths and weaknesses. Last, but certainly not least, the author runs the reader through various group tactics as complex as you'd find on any whiteboard in an NFL team's locker room!

Warhammer Online is ultimately striving for mass market appeal, but its core is that of a realm vs. realm (many players vs. many players) gaming experience. The RvR teamplay guide is an excellent starting point for anyone who wants give this MMORPG a try but is slightly timid about RvR or PvP. It's also fantastic for any current WAR subscriber.
The ultimate RvR teamplay guide for Warhammer Online originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 29 Jan 2009 16:30:00 EST. The GOA team have made their "Short Guide to Roleplaying" available on the Warhammer Online site to promote RPing, and educate those that have a vague interest in the matter but don't know what to do. It all begins at character creation. Hint: there's more to it than just choosing how your avatar looks (although that's important too). Deciding on your character's personality and background is also part of the creation, as well as fitting everything into the existing Warhammer lore.

The guide itself isn't too WAR-specific, and could be used by any MMOer looking to brush up on their roleplaying skills. GOA did however interview a roleplaying fan from the Burlok server, who said that the lack of a "walk" option and the inability to sit down are two things that could be changed to make the RPing experience even better in WAR. Despite the issues that seem to come up in most popular MMOs with RPing, the interview suggests that WAR's roleplayers are already having a pretty good time.
Brush up on your roleplaying with WAR's RP guide originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 16 Jan 2009 09:00:00 EST. Warhammer Online's Grab Bag 7 discusses the recruit-a-friend and trial programs, as well as a handful of quite specific questions relating to dungeons and items found later in the game -- in other words, it's got a bit of something for everyone. There's good news for Europe, as the recruit-a-friend promotion is being sorted out by GOA right now and should be available to Europeans soon. Some confusion regarding the trial client is also cleared up; yes, it is the same as the retail game client, but trialing players who want to subscribe will still need to pick up a retail copy to get an account key.

Perhaps the most interesting bit of trial-related information is that a standalone trial, independent of recruit-a-friend, is on its way too. The introduction of free trials usually feels like the beginning of a new stage in an MMO's life, reminding you that they're not that new anymore and should have had time to find their feet.. Occasionally free trials are brought about in an attempt to save a sinking ship, but we really don't think that's the case here. You can read about the trials, along with the answers to some other miscellaneous questions, at the latest Grab Bag.

WAR Grab Bag no. 7: Recruit-a-Friend, trials and more originally appeared on Massively on Sun, 11 Jan 2009 12:00:00 EST. Yet, in their defense, GOA has been working to remedy these concerns and address many of the issues that have been alienating European WAR players since before launch.

In a recent forum post, GOA's Community Manager, Magnus, confronted these problems and let players know that they're not only aware of what's going on, but they're working to fix it. This wasn't quite enough for one blogger at Books of Grudges who described their frustration at what they say "smacks of PR." If the on-going issues with GOA have been affecting you lately, check out the Magnus post and the Book of Grudges response. These are problems persisting from this past weekend, and as a result the EU section of the Warhammer Alliance boards are full of ticked off players spitting invectives. It's easy to see why when when this official status update thread has such dire and worrisome phrases associated with it. Though players had already assumed as much, it looks like the blame for this failure falls at the feet of GOA. The European publisher for Warhammer (as well as DAoC and a number of other games) has a reputation among gamers for frustrations and customer service issues.

Over at Mark Jacobs' blog, it sounds like Mythic made sure to communicate some of those frustrations directly to the French publisher. Says the CEO, "We had a number of conversations with them today about everything that happened. GOA messed up and their CEO has apologized and promised to do better going forward." He also notes his own frustration at some of the harsh words written over the weekend by frustrated players, noting that the game's Beta state means it's not ready for prime-time yet. Hopefully GOA will see this as a learning experience.

Edited to reflect ongoing state of EU Beta.
