With the stigma associated with the term RMT -- or "real money trading" -- companies such as Live Gamer and Ping0 have an uphill battle when selling their legitimized RMT services to many gamers. At <a href="http://gdc08.joystiq.com">GDC</a> recently, <a href="http://www.livegamer.com/">Live Gamer</a>'s Andrew Schneider and <a href="http://www.ping-0.com/">ping0</a>'s Steve Goldstein tried to explain to a skeptical crowd why their forms of RMT trading are the future of gaming.<br /><br />Though you hear a lot about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/"><em>WoW</em></a> gold, all online games have a large secondary market for currency. These services are all operated outside of the publisher's terms of service or EULA and are very inefficient, both for the player and the company. The RMT industry is littered with account and credit card theft -- and when a customer's account has been compromised, they don't call the RMT traders: they call the game's customer support line. It's an immense waste of resources for the game company and a huge hassle for the player involved. (Has your <em>World of Warcraft </em>account ever been stolen? If so, you know it can take weeks to get everything restored.) If game companies don't address RMT issues themselves, they're just going to have problems with black market RMT. Live Gamer seems to offer a, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" approach with their attempts to run a legitimate RMT business.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/08/gdc08-are-virtual-item-sales-the-way-of-the-future/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: Are virtual item sales the way of the future?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/08/gdc08-are-virtual-item-sales-the-way-of-the-future/">GDC08: Are virtual item sales the way of the future?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 08 Mar 2008 16:30:00 EST. There was a great deal more to the demo, though, content very much worth talking about. The event started by reshashing the game's starting point, your <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/14/age-of-conan-product-developer-interview-with-gameplay-video/">rise from slave to adventurer</a> in the wake of a ship wreck. We've discussed that experience, both in our own coverage of the game and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/04/rising-from-a-lowly-slave-age-of-conans-starting-point-profil/">in reference to work done by other sites</a>.<br /> <br /> Probably the most interesting element of the demo, though, was the so-far little seen guild and guild city elements. Essentially a sort of RTS-lite element plopped down in the dead center of the game's endgame PvP, <em>Age of Conan</em>'s city construction takes the crafting and housing elements we've seen in other games and explodes them out in some interesting directions. Read on for details on this new way of tackling a well-known game system.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-age-of-conan-preview/">GDC 08: Age of Conan Preview</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-age-of-conan-preview/#650738"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/000073_vanir_heads_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-age-of-conan-preview/#650735"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/000313_temple-of-thurga_entrance02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-age-of-conan-preview/#650734"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/000368_the_temple_axreis_chamber_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-age-of-conan-preview/#650732"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/000368_the_temple_crocodile_pool_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-age-of-conan-preview/#650737"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/000776_pillars_of_kamula01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/05/we-built-this-city-age-of-conans-constructable-pvp-city-system/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>We built this city: Age of Conan's constructible PvP city system previewed</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/05/we-built-this-city-age-of-conans-constructable-pvp-city-system/">We built this city: Age of Conan's constructible PvP city system previewed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 05 Mar 2008 13:00:00 EST. Though anyone who has played the existing LEGO games would understand their charm, from an outside perspective you might be wondering why LEGO needed to go to the massively multiplayer scale. At <a href="http://gdc08.joystiq.com">GDC</a> this past week, Mark Hansen, Director of Business Development for LEGO, explained the ideas behind their MMO to be, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lego-universe/">LEGO Universe</a></em>. It's all about playing with LEGOS, of course! Playing and building with LEGOs is a creative experience, an imaginative experience -- and LEGO wanted a version of their product that would relevant for children of the 21st century who had grown up (and are growing up) around computers and technology.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-lego-universe/">GDC08: LEGO Universe</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-lego-universe/#659876"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/eh_legouni03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-lego-universe/#659875"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/eh_legouni02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-lego-universe/#658336"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_1277_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-lego-universe/#658337"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_1278_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-lego-universe/#658334"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_1279_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/24/gdc08-the-how-what-and-why-of-lego-universe/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: The how, what, and why of LEGO Universe</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/24/gdc08-the-how-what-and-why-of-lego-universe/">GDC08: The how, what, and why of LEGO Universe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 24 Feb 2008 08:30:00 EST. Conversations with multiple Cryptic-folk suggested we check out the March issue of <a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/default.htm">Game Informer</a> for news -- so, of course, we ran right out and scoured the stores until we found a copy of our very own. It gave us oodles of information about their upcoming game <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online"><em>Champions Online</em></a> and a brief teaser of two projects (suggested to be two of many), only referred to as X1 and X2. From Game Informer's images, both appear to be in a fantasy setting. During a panel yesterday, Emmert mentioned a "secret sci-fi project" (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/gdc08-cryptics-secret-project/">our hope</a> is that it's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, but we don't know anything for sure). And <a href="http://www.crypticstudios.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=87&amp;Itemid=34">on Cryptic's home page</a> there's a selection of concept art that ranges from lush fantasy environments to run-down modern cityscapes to military combat. (But definitely nothing that looks like Trek.) So just what is Cryptic working on? We'll have to keep calling their PR department once an hour asking, "Can you tell us now?" "What about <em>now</em>?"<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cryptics-works-in-progress/">Cryptic's works in progress</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cryptics-works-in-progress/#658111"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/eh_crypticproject01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cryptics-works-in-progress/#658110"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/eh_crypticproject03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cryptics-works-in-progress/#658109"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/eh_crypticproject06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cryptics-works-in-progress/#658108"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/eh_crypticproject07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cryptics-works-in-progress/#658107"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/eh_crypticproject05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/just-what-is-cryptic-working-on/">Just what is Cryptic working on?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 22 Feb 2008 15:30:00 EST. 'Cause we're all kind of <em>Spore</em>'d out, aren't we?<br /><br />I was right about the lack of <em>Spore</em>, but was pleasantly surprised and gratified to hear Will speak on a variety of topics -- <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_bond">James Bond</a>, cosmonauts, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilligan%27s_Island">Gilligan's Island</a> as the predecessor of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_gaiman">Neil Gaiman</a>'s <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sandman_%28Vertigo%29">The Sandman</a> comics, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godzilla">Godzilla</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Care_bears">Care Bears</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_%28TV_series%29">Lost</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_disney">Walt Disney</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlestar_galactica">Battlestar Galactica</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiderman">Spiderman</a>, and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zen_and_the_art_of_motorcycle_maintenance">Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance</a> -- before finally wrapping it all up with the observation that the stories that resonate with us are deconstructible; we can reduce them to components, and using those components, build our own stories. <br /><br />Finally, accepting questions from the audience, I asked him what advice he'd give NASA as they <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/31/8-things-nasa-needs-to-get-right/">create their MMO</a>. His friends never showed up, but man, Will Wright is always worth a listen. Yesterday morning, Cryptic Studios' chief creative officer, Jack Emmert, talked to attendees at <a href="http://gdc08.joystiq.com">GDC</a> about Cryptic's successes (and failures) with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> (and other games). He was surprisingly frank, starting things off with a list of <em>CoH</em>'s strengths and weaknesses. For strengths, he cited character customization, fun moment to moment game play, Flight/Superspeed/Superjump, plenty of character slots, no loot. For weaknesses, he told the crowd about how the game had few goals outside of leveling, its lack of PvP, the repetitiveness of the instances, the lack of an end-game, the lack of guild mechanics, no loot. Whether you love Cryptic's <em>City of</em>... games or hate them, read on for a discussion of where they went wrong and where they went right.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/gdc08-jack-emmert-on-cryptics-success-and-failure/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: Jack Emmert on Cryptic's success (and failure)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/gdc08-jack-emmert-on-cryptics-success-and-failure/">GDC08: Jack Emmert on Cryptic's success (and failure)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 22 Feb 2008 10:05:00 EST. A simple title, perhaps, but probably the most anticipated event for Massive game designers and fans alike. Jack Emmert, Chief Creative Officer at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-studios">Cryptic Studios</a>, gave an interesting talk about using episodic content (read: patches) in the morning's (yes, it's still morning in California!) first round of <a href="http://gdc08.joystiq.com">GDC</a> sessions. While we'll be posting a detailed write-up of the session later today, Emmert dropped a tidbit that, like any good piece of gossip, we simply <em>must</em> share. Talking about what Cryptic was working on, Emmert mentioned the recently announced <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online/"><em>Champions Online</em></a> as well as what he called "a secret sci-fi project." <br /><br />We could hardly resist squeaking with glee as this bit of information might lend some credence to rumors that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/14/rumor-new-sto-developers-being-cryptic/">Cryptic might be acquiring the <em>Star Trek Online</em> license</a>. Of course, this is all speculation -- it's entirely possible Cryptic is working on an original IP or other sci-fi license. Right now we know:<br />
<ol>
    <li><em>STO</em> developer Perpetual closed up shop and announces the Trek license had been given to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/14/rumor-new-sto-developers-being-cryptic/">an unnamed developer in the Bay area</a>.</li>
    <li><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/16/rumor-cryptic-only-wants-talent-from-perpetual-not-a-license/">Cryptic was in talks with Perpetual for... something</a>. We presume they were after some of Perpetual's development team, but no one would confirm or deny whether the <em>STO</em> license was involved.<br /></li>
    <li>Cryptic is now working on a sci-fi project.</li>
</ol>
This may not be proof, but if you put these pieces of news together it seems highly likely that they've become involved in <em>STO</em>'s development in some way.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/gdc08-cryptics-secret-project/">GDC08: Cryptic's secret project</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 21 Feb 2008 14:30:00 EST. Taking a cue from sites and <a href="http://www.wegame.com/">services like WeGame</a>, they are using their own video codec (xfcodec, which unfortunately won't work with a few video applications yet), and letting you record video on the fly during any Xfire-enabled game. We're told that a future version will enable you to upload your videos directly to your Xfire profile.<br /><br />As you can see above, despite YouTube's horrible compression, <a href="http://www.jameswoodcock.co.uk/?p=1190">the video itself doesn't</a> look too bad. And James Woodcock, who took this video, says that while the audio still has a few issues, the video quality before compression is "exceptional." Not everybody is thrilled -- the client can sometimes <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/160637.html">cause lag and drop frames</a> -- but Xfire says they want to <a href="http://www.xfire.com/xf/modules.php?name=Forums&amp;file=viewtopic&amp;t=164077">hear about any issues you have</a>. Anyone tried it yet?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/gdc08-xfires-video-capture-beta/">GDC08: Xfire's video capture beta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 21 Feb 2008 13:00:00 EST. We've seen a lot of interesting things at the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/worlds-in-motion">Worlds in Motion Summit</a> which took place at <a href="http://gdc08.joystiq.com">GDC</a> earlier this week, we found this post-mortum of Scion's virtual campaign in There.com fascinating. While we tune out commercials and skim over print advertisements as much as anyone, but well thought-out interactive advertisements in virtual worlds still feel novel and interesting. (Well, okay, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/21/colgate-palmolives-second-life-not-raising-a-smile/">some of them aren't</a>.) So what made Scion's campaign stand out? Read on for an analysis.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-club-scion/">GDC08: Club Scion</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-club-scion/#654694"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/eh_gdc_scion02g_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-club-scion/#654592"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/1061933893_df42bc8822_o_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-club-scion/#654591"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/1061935755_d1235e2c00_o_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-club-scion/#654590"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/1061932897_f24f7a3cfd_o_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-club-scion/#654589"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/1529596533_e5993978dc_o_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/gdc08-building-brands-in-virtual-worlds/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: Building brands in virtual worlds</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/gdc08-building-brands-in-virtual-worlds/">GDC08: Building brands in virtual worlds</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 21 Feb 2008 10:53:00 EST. Tuesday afternoon, Michael Acton Smith, CEO of <a href="http://mindcandy.com/">Mind Candy</a>, presented attendees at the <a href="http://gdc08.joystiq.com">GDC</a>'s Worlds in Motion summit with an interesting look at the confluence between real goods and virtual worlds. For some background on where Smith is coming from, Mind Candy "creates games and puzzles that span multiple media.... [they] use all forms of technology to tell stories and interact with... [their] audiences." They run <a href="http://www.perplexcity.com/"><em>Perplex City</em></a>, an alternate reality game that uses clues puzzles in the real world combined with web-based resources to create a unique type of gameplay. Their upcoming game <a href="http://www.moshimonsters.com/"><em>Moshi Monsters</em></a> is an adoptable pet game geared towards kids. Smith says it's a "new type of virtual pet experience." The pets will be very alive with their own emotions (driven by a behavior engine which will cause your pet to act different ways depending on how you treat it) that will be reflected in the pet's animations. The game will also incorporate a number of social tools, so both you and your pet monster can hang out with friends. And, of course, there will be <a href="http://www.moshimonsters.com/buystuff">toys, oh glorious toys</a>. (Some already available, though the game itself is still in beta and closed to the public.)<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-worlds-in-motion-summit-day-2/">GDC08: Worlds in Motion summit day 2</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-worlds-in-motion-summit-day-2/#652579"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0848_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-worlds-in-motion-summit-day-2/#652578"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0854_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-worlds-in-motion-summit-day-2/#652577"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0856_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-worlds-in-motion-summit-day-2/#652576"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0852_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-worlds-in-motion-summit-day-2/#652574"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0844_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/gdc08-thinking-outside-the-virtual-world/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: Thinking outside the virtual world</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/gdc08-thinking-outside-the-virtual-world/">GDC08: Thinking outside the virtual world</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 21 Feb 2008 07:14:00 EST. Before a talk at GDC this morning about the storytelling <em>BioShock</em> we noticed a <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft">World of Warcraft</a></em> icon very prominent in the quicklaunch bar on his Mac. Over the course of the lecture Levine reinforced his online influences by several times referencing some of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a>'s talented design. We chatted with him for a few minutes after the talk ended, and he confirmed that he's a big fan of the game. In fact, he just recently leveled a druid to 57 - solo, as that's the way he generally plays.<br /><br />He also touched on the depth of WoW's design in a response to differences between <em>BioShock</em> and <em>System Shock 2</em>: <em>"Feature-wise it's not really that different from System Shock 2. We wanted to make sure every player understood what they were doing on an instictual level - not that they were doing 2d6 of fire damage. That meant there were limitations. In a game like WoW, on the other hand, they can make stuff that's incredibly deep because you're watching the numbers scroll by. My friend Joe likes to brag "My tank has 12,612 armor points!" Which in a game is a distinction that's meaningful to some extent - some people really like min/maxing, some people area really about the world, and I didn't want to get trapped in the middle."</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/20/how-ken-levine-maker-of-bioshock-plays-world-of-warcraft/">How Ken Levine (maker of BioShock) plays World of Warcraft</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 20 Feb 2008 19:00:00 EST. They've teamed up with <a href="http://www.vivox.com/">a company called Vivox</a> to not only bring integrated voice chat into all of their games, but also some features that MMO players have never even dreamed of. Vivox says they'll be able to bring voicemail into games, join raid chats via landline or cell phone, and even use voice manipulation over the connection.<br /><br />Apparently the voice chat service will be also available <a href="http://archive.burningsea.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43670">just through Sony's Launcher</a>, so you won't need to be in-game to use the applications. Gamers will have buddy lists, and games will all have volume controls and channel controls, but the other features they brag about apparently won't be available at launch-- while voice and guild chat channels will be available right away, the other features, like voicemail and "voice fonts," are only "anticipated" for later. Still, John Smedley, SOE President, is quoted in the release as being excited about bringing the two services together, so only time will tell how it will all work.<br /><br />Time, and our interviews, that is. Massively has a few correspondents on the floor at GDC right now, and we are planning to speak with both Vivox and SOE before the end of the week. Stay tuned for more on these services and just what they'll entail for players in-game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/20/gdc-08-soe-goes-voice-chat-crazy/">GDC08: SOE goes voice chat crazy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 20 Feb 2008 17:45:00 EST. In this morning's first panel, CCP's Senior Technical Producer Torfi Frans Olafsson had a lot to say about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s upcoming space station environments. At present, EVE's player characters are little more than still portraits -- in the playable portion of the game you are primarily represented as your ship, which you can use to navegate and explore the game world. Initially announced in a <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=401">2006 dev blog</a>, EVE will one day have the ability to exit your ship and interact with other characters as a human avatar rather -- we still don't have an exact release date (though at GDC07 they gave a 2008 date, so there's a chance it may be included in the upcoming Kali 4 expansion, about which little is known), but we have some details on the gameplay and the development process after the break.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-building-eve-social-environments/">GDC08: Building EVE social environments</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-building-eve-social-environments/#652908"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0943_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-building-eve-social-environments/#652907"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc05455_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-building-eve-social-environments/#652906"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc05456_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-building-eve-social-environments/#652904"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0942_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-building-eve-social-environments/#652902"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc05453_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/20/gdc08-eve-onlines-space-stations/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: EVE Online's space stations</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/20/gdc08-eve-onlines-space-stations/">GDC08: EVE Online's space stations</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 20 Feb 2008 14:30:00 EST. Applications will be accepted beginning April 1, 2008 and ending May 31, 2008, with winners announced on or about June 30, 2008. Entries will be judged by a panel of industry professionals at SOE. <br /><br /> The event featured a Q&amp;A session with some of SOE's female production and executive staff including Torrie Dorrell (SVP Global Sales and Marketing), Courtney Simmons (Director of Corporate Communications and PR), Sherry Floyd (Producer, SOE Seattle), Laura Naviaux (Director, Global Brand Marketing), Taina Rodriguez (Publicist), Tracey Seamster (Game Designer), and Heather Sowards (Media Producer). By the end of my session with the creative team, I said this, and I quote: "You guys will hear this a lot from now on, so let me be the first: this is like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokemon">Pok&eacute;mon</a>, but far, far cooler."<br /><br />And it is. <em>Freaky Creatures</em> has a lot going for it, and it sounds like they're getting it all right. Given that the game has been in development for over 5 years now, Abandon Interactive has had the advantage of watching many an MMO rise and fall, and they're making sure they don't make the same mistakes. Read on, O Intrepid One, and lemme 'splain some things to you.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-freaky-creatures/">GDC08: Freaky Creatures</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-freaky-creatures/#651704"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/freakycreatures-2008-02-13-11-47-40-85_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-freaky-creatures/#651703"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/freakycreatures-2008-02-13-12-14-10-24_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-freaky-creatures/#651702"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/freakycreatures-2008-02-13-11-46-39-83_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-freaky-creatures/#651701"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/freakycreatures-2008-02-13-12-15-06-47_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc08-freaky-creatures/#651699"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/freakycreatures-2008-02-13-11-23-38-74_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/20/gdc08-abandon-interactives-freaky-creatures/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: Abandon Interactive's Freaky Creatures</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/20/gdc08-abandon-interactives-freaky-creatures/">GDC08: Abandon Interactive's Freaky Creatures</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 20 Feb 2008 04:45:00 EST. At GDC this afternoon <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/gaia-online/"><em>Gaia Online</em></a>'s Craig Sherman announced that Gaia is developing a free, flash-based to play casual MMO. Though you may presume this is just another web-based casual game, Sherman says it will be a "real MMO." It will be launching this summer and Gaia expects it to become one of the top MMOs in the world within the first few months -- after all, they already have a user-base of 5 million players who want this kind of game play, so they aren't starting from scratch. Sherman wouldn't give us a name for the game (saying that they'd solicited names from current Gaia users and received around 20,000 responses), but ensured us that it would be a full-scale MMO (with combat, etc) with a heavy social aspect. Though we're hungry for more details, summer is only a few months away!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/gdc08-gaia-online-launching-casual-mmo/">GDC08: Gaia Online launching casual MMO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 19 Feb 2008 20:42:00 EST. The takeaway message is about what virtual worlds can learn from MMOs in terms of providing intelligent goal structures. <br /><br /><strong> Erik:</strong> How do we apply MMO goal structures to virtual worlds (and to almost everything)? Virtual worlders tend to hate games like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/"><em>WoW</em></a> because they're not "erudite" enough but look at this screenshot (shows slide of a UI from a raid) and look at how complicated the user interface is. With 10 million people playing, is it hardcore or is it casual? I get really frustrated with arguments about UI: the raid screenshot proves that even this level of complexity can break through to a larger audience. <br /><br /> Shows slide of quest-giver goblin in WoW: "virtual worlds are missing the little guys with exclamation points above their heads." Looking at other examples of goal structures: look at how successful <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/puzzle-quest"><em>Puzzle Quest</em></a> got by combining Bejeweled with RPG elements. Look at <a href="http://www.chorewars.com/">Chore Wars</a> -- suddenly I get excited about walking the dog (laughter). Even something like the <a href="http://www.linkedin.com">LinkedIn</a> registration process -- I logged in one day and saw that my "progress bar" was only at 40% and how can I live with that?! I had to level up in LinkedIn. I found out I needed to get testimonials from my contacts to get higher -- it was a group quest! I got pissed that I couldn't solo LinkedIn (lots of laughter).<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/gdc08-why-are-goal-structures-important-to-mmos-and-vws/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: Why are goal structures important to MMOs and VWs?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/gdc08-why-are-goal-structures-important-to-mmos-and-vws/">GDC08: Why are goal structures important to MMOs and VWs?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 19 Feb 2008 17:25:00 EST. We traveled to the desolate landscape of <font size="-1"><a href="http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/age-of-conan-hyborian-adventures/751886p1.html">Khopshef province</a> for a look at what the riding animals of Hyborea could do in a scuffle. <br /></font><font size="-1"><br />Game director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/search/?q=Gaute%20Godager">Gaute Godager</a> walked us through the tusk-tossing and hoof-stomping, revealing details of when and how you'll be able to grab your mounts. He also hinted at post-launch possibilities for some of the bigger animals, and touched on the nteraction these mighty steeds will have with the game's signature 'seige PvP' gameplay. At its core, the Sulake company project is a meeting space for teens - a place to hang out and be someone else for a few hours. The fact that the company can boast millions and millions of unique users worldwide, though, speaks to something many have grasped for and few have succeeded at: a virtual world where people feel truly comfortable.<br /> <br /> Haro offered up a peak behind the curtain, at the origins of Habbo as the four room 'Hotel Goldfish'. He discusses the successes they've had in markets abroad, their surprise at the game's adoption by teens, and the numerous ways they allow players to acquire in-game currency. He also notes that Habbo is a world-record setting title in at least one way: they've probably sold the most virtual reindeer poop ever in the history of man.<br /> <br /> Read on for a dissertation on a poop-selling, smashing success story.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/">GDC 08: Worlds in Motion summit</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649333"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0492_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649331"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0501_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649332"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0506_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649335"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0508_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649336"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0511_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/gdc08-sulka-haro-tells-us-how-to-habbo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: Sulka Haro tells us how to Habbo</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/gdc08-sulka-haro-tells-us-how-to-habbo/">GDC08: Sulka Haro tells us how to Habbo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 19 Feb 2008 13:40:00 EST. This afternoon Team Massively is reporting to you live from the <a href="http://gdc08.joystiq.com/">Game Developers Conference</a>, where we're fidgeting in our seats waiting for Turbine's Jeffrey Steefel to take the stage. Turbine has quietly been integrating "best-of-breed virtual world and social networking elements" into their flagship game, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online/"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>. What exactly these features are we aren't quite certain, but we do know that the main reason we're still playing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> is because all of our friends play, so we're all about social networking. And, anyway, we're sure Mr. Steefel is eager to tell us alllll about it, just as soon as we get started!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/gdc08-turbine-talks-about-gamings-future/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: Turbine talks about gaming's future</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/gdc08-turbine-talks-about-gamings-future/">GDC08: Turbine talks about gaming's future</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 19 Feb 2008 13:10:00 EST. <div align="left">When you talk about gaming in North America, it's almost presumed you're talking about console or single-player PC games -- but in Asia it's the other way around. With the vast success of massively multiplayer games in the Asian market, it's no surprise to see American companies attempting to emulate similar models -- both in North America and overseas. But that level of success has proven difficult to emulate. Yesterday afternoon at the Worlds in Motion Summit, <a href="http://www.outspark.com/portal/">Susan Choe</a>, <a href="http://www.tencent.com/index_e.shtml">David Wallerstein</a>, <a href="http://www.threerings.net/">Daniel James</a>, and <a href="http://www.vinagame.com.vn/">Bryan Pelz</a> got together to chat about the future of the Asian market.</div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/gdc08-is-asia-the-hollywood-of-mmos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: Is Asia the Hollywood of MMOs?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/gdc08-is-asia-the-hollywood-of-mmos/">GDC08: Is Asia the Hollywood of MMOs?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 19 Feb 2008 11:30:00 EST. In fact, most of Raph's speech was quite depressing. He spoke about the reality that many <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/virtual-worlds">Virtual Worlds</a> are meaningless 'Castles in the Air", the horror and disconnect from 'metaspace' of places like Darfur, and the failure of the design community to really push the possibility envelope. <br /><br />That said, the packed-to-overflowing room met Raph's harsh realism warmly; as if some of his unyielding statements were reassuringly brutal to a few choice ideas and sacred cows. Read on for a rundown on how Raph began by looking back at the history of online games with a bitter eye, and ended up offering up a rallying cry for the entire industry.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/">GDC 08: Worlds in Motion summit</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649333"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0492_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649331"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0501_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649332"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0506_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649335"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0508_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649336"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0511_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/gdc08-raph-koster-gets-sentimental-about-virtual-worlds/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: Raph Koster gets sentimental about Virtual Worlds</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/gdc08-raph-koster-gets-sentimental-about-virtual-worlds/">GDC08: Raph Koster gets sentimental about Virtual Worlds</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 19 Feb 2008 11:15:00 EST. It seems like more than a few industry types are interested in the intersections between gaming and virtual worlds. Case in point, the following session we've paraphrased (hopefully not too liberally!) from Reuben Steiger, CEO of <a href="http://www.millionsofus.com/">Milllions of Us</a>, a company that builds marketing campaigns and content for virtual worlds. <br /><br /><strong> Reuben:</strong> Storytelling is the bedrock of human culture. (Looking at a slide with a real campfire on the left and a user-created campfire in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/second-life">Second Life</a></em> on the right) -- users in virtual worlds are recreating this storytelling tradition. I'm going to make a contention: the internet has failed as a storytelling medium. Instead, the norm is bathroom humor and ridiculous jokes. <br /><br /> So virtual worlds: are they games or not? What defines a game -- linguists and semioticians get real worked up about it. The audience might say "virtual worlds are games without rules, competition, goals or fun." And it's hard to blame them. Extreme openness has defined virtual worlds, where fun can be in a way you define as opposed to what some game developer feels is fun. But the appeal of virtual worlds is that we can tell stories on a broader and less walled playing field.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/gdc-08-entertainment-content-convergence-in-online-worlds/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 08: Entertainment content convergence in online worlds</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/gdc-08-entertainment-content-convergence-in-online-worlds/">GDC 08: Entertainment content convergence in online worlds</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 19 Feb 2008 08:30:00 EST. We can hear what you're thinking. <a href="http://www.facebook.com">Facebook</a>, a gaming platform? It's what we thought, too, when we attended the <span style="font-style: italic;">Facebook and the new web of Social Gaming </span>panel at the Worlds in Motion summit yesterday afternoon. "Facebook" and "gaming" didn't seem to belong together in the same sentence. But as it turns out, Facebook and similar social networks aren't just for making friends anymore -- they're also a lucrative platform for viral web-based games. The numbers these games are hitting are similar to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life"><span style="font-style: italic;">Second Life</span></a>'s and they're targeting a demographic the rest of the industry doesn't touch: not women, not teens, not ages 18 to 25, but <em>people</em>.<br /><br />Social networks such as Facebook already have an immense audience -- the question is, once you have all of these people connected together through Facebook, what are they supposed to do? I'm sure you've already guessed the answer: game.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/gdc08-facebook-and-the-social-gaming-revolution/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: Facebook and the social gaming revolution</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/gdc08-facebook-and-the-social-gaming-revolution/">GDC08: Facebook and the social gaming revolution</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 19 Feb 2008 07:30:00 EST. At a morning GDC session, <a href="http://www.gopetslive.com/en/intro/intro.html">GoPets</a>' <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/erik-bethke/">Erik Bethke</a> gave a standing-room-only-crowd some sage advice:<br /><br /><em>People who use green for mana bars instead of blue for mana bars... that's just hubris.</em><br /><br />Of course what he means by this is that developers who defy basic gaming trends are setting themselves up for failure. To continue the mana bar metaphor, players have become accustomed to blue mana bars and green health bars from a long history of games. Mixing up this very basic element will only make a game less accessible. On the flip side of this, however, is innovation. If no one breaks the traditional molds, we may never see better games. But at the same time it's hard to argue with Bethke's example: why change a game element that players are accustomed to? It could make the difference between a game that's intuitive and quickly picked up by new players and a game that loses players before the tutorial's finished.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/">GDC 08: Worlds in Motion summit</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649333"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0492_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649331"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0501_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649332"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0506_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649335"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0508_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649336"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0511_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/gdc08-what-if-your-mana-bar-was-green/">GDC08: What if your mana bar was green?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 18 Feb 2008 21:30:00 EST. What if you could incentivize people to do things that were good for them by giving them goal structures? Players provide goals for themselves all the time in ostensibly 'goal-less' virtual worlds, from <em><a href="http://massively.com/category/second-life">Second Life</a></em> to <em><a href="http://massively.com/category/club-penguin/">Club Penguin</a></em>. <br /> <br /> In an aside, Bethke noted that assigning goal structures - reasons to play - is actually a fairly easy part of game design. Though it takes some effort to make those goals fun and interesting, working them up in the first place is a fairly trivial piece of work.<br /> <br /> So what if you could make eating right and exercising fun by leveling up and earning loot?<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/">GDC 08: Worlds in Motion summit</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649333"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0492_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649331"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0501_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649332"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0506_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649335"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0508_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649336"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0511_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/gdc08-exercise-the-mmo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: Exercise - the MMO?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/gdc08-exercise-the-mmo/">GDC08: Exercise - the MMO?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 18 Feb 2008 19:30:00 EST. This morning, Funcom showed off <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-conan/">Age of Conan</a> </em>in style. Their room at the W hotel, a short walk from the Moscone Center where GDC is taking place, was lit entirely in red and decked out with trees and, true to Conan's lore, severed heads. (We're pretty sure they weren't real. At least we hope they weren't.) Though we have full audio, some great screenshots, and additional coming later, we thought we'd give you a peak at what the <em>AoC</em> team was showing off at GDC with some snapshots and a brief overview.<br /><br />Go ahead and check out our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/gdc08-a-preview-of-age-of-conans-wild-and-wooly-mounted-combat/">preview of mounted combat</a>!<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-age-of-conan-preview/">GDC 08: Age of Conan Preview</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-age-of-conan-preview/#650738"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/000073_vanir_heads_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-age-of-conan-preview/#650735"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/000313_temple-of-thurga_entrance02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-age-of-conan-preview/#650734"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/000368_the_temple_axreis_chamber_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-age-of-conan-preview/#650732"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/000368_the_temple_crocodile_pool_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-age-of-conan-preview/#650737"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/000776_pillars_of_kamula01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/gdc08-age-of-conan-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: Age of Conan Preview</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/gdc08-age-of-conan-preview/">GDC08: Age of Conan Preview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 18 Feb 2008 18:30:00 EST. Leigh is the blogger-in-residence over at CMP's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/search/?q=Worlds%20in%20Motion">Worlds in Motion</a>, a site we've linked to many times here from Massively. In her work there, she does what she can to highlight the work of pioneers in the Virtual World industry. <br /><br />This morning, she asked the basic question: What does gaming have to do with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/virtual-worlds">Virtual Worlds</a>? We normally think of VWs as brand experiences, collaborative business environments, or opportunities for social interaction like <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life/">Second Life</a></em>. So what do these virtual spaces, the leadup to the 'Metaverse', have to do with gaming?<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/">GDC 08: Worlds in Motion summit</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649333"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0492_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649331"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0501_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649332"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0506_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649335"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0508_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/gdc-08-worlds-in-motion-summit/#649336"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/02/dsc_0511_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/gdc08-leigh-alexander-introduces-us-to-worlds-in-motion/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC08: Leigh Alexander introduces us to Worlds in Motion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/gdc08-leigh-alexander-introduces-us-to-worlds-in-motion/">GDC08: Leigh Alexander introduces us to Worlds in Motion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 18 Feb 2008 17:30:00 EST. Happy Monday, everyone! Joystiq and Massively are <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/our-gdc-armaments-2008-edition/">out in force</a> on the streets of San Francisco this week covering the <a href="http://www.gdconf.com/">Game Developers Conference</a>. Through we're bleary-eyed from late night <em>Rock Band</em> sessions and just starting on our daily caffeine allotment (hey, it's still morning in California!) we're here for <em>you</em>, covering all the news that's fit to virtually print. Today and tomorrow we'll be at the <a href="http://www.gdconf.com/conference/wim.htm#wimsessions">Worlds in Motion Summit</a>, where it's all virtual worlds, all the time, and for the rest of the week we'll be out on the show floor searching out every tidbit of MMO news. Keep an eye out for the latest on all of your favorite games this week <a href="http://www.weblogsinc.com/tag/gdc08/">from GDC</a>!<br /><br />
