Although there is no <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/some-assembly-required">Some Assembly Required</a> in the title, don't let that fool you; today's focus is on one of the founding precepts of this column, player-generated content. It's just not sandboxy player-generated content like we've covered before. Today's special edition explores the PGC proposed for the decidedly non-sandbox action RPG <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/path-of-exile">Path of Exile</a></em>.<br />
<br />
At <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013">GDC</a> I sat down with managing director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chris-wilson/">Chris Wilson</a> and technical director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jonathan-rogers/">Jonathan Rogers</a> to discuss <em>Path of Exile</em> and their idea of adding player-run races to the game. A fan favorite, these timed gaming experiences are currently only officially sponsored events grouped into seasons, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/20/path-of-exiles-season-one-race-events-start-february-23rd/">the first of which</a> just concluded. However, devs would like to give players the opportunity to create and host unofficial events (meaning results won't have any bearing on the seasons) to allow players to enjoy this wildly popular facet of the game in a place where they can practice skills, test themselves against friends, or just enjoy a unique challenge.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/08/path-of-exile-interview-reveals-plans-for-player-generated-races/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Path of Exile interview reveals plans for player-generated races</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/08/path-of-exile-interview-reveals-plans-for-player-generated-races/">Path of Exile interview reveals plans for player-generated races</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 08 Apr 2013 16:30:00 EST. Good news! (Well, at least for my police record.) As it turns out, I didn't have to resort to kidnapping to convince someone from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> to talk to me about <em><a href="http://na.aiononline.com/">Aion</a></em> at this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013">GDC</a>. I swear, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sean-Orlikowski/">Sean Orlikowski</a>, the game's associate producer, came willingly.<br />
<br />
It does, however, appear that in the fine print of the meeting proposal, I agreed to be outfitted with a special electronic device that would send massive jolts of electricity through my system if I tried to speak about something I shouldn't. So let's see how much I can share with you before this apparatus leaves me unconscious.<br />
<br />
Can I tell you that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion/"><em>Aion</em></a> has a special celebration planned for the first anniversary of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/truly-free/">Truly Free</a> conversion? So far, so good, folks. Hmm... can I add that the next big expansion has a North American launch date planned without going unconscious... oh, appears so! OK, let's push this a little further: How about if I happened to mention that 4.0 will hit servers in June 2013 -- would I be zapped? Nope! So there you have it, folks: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aion-4.0/">4.0</a> is indeed going live in just two short months!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/06/wings-over-atreia-exclusive-aion-4-0-launches-in-june/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wings Over Atreia Exclusive: Aion 4.0 launches in June!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/06/wings-over-atreia-exclusive-aion-4-0-launches-in-june/">Wings Over Atreia Exclusive: Aion 4.0 launches in June!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 06 Apr 2013 14:00:00 EST. It may seem like a while has passed since we last experienced <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-steam/"><em>City of Steam</em></a>, the fantasy steampunk MMORPG that fits in your browser. That's because it has! The game's last <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/12/city-of-steam-double-feature-a-beta-trailer-and-a-steam-greenli/">closed beta testing</a> round was back in December, and fans have been eagerly waiting to get back into the city-state of Nexus. Of course there has been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/31/city-of-steams-bestiary-gives-pre-launch-advantage/">some</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/02/mechanist-says-no-to-huge-pauldrons-revamps-city-of-steam-npc-d/">news</a> to tide us over in the meantime while developers have been turning all of that beta feedback into fixes and updates, but that's not the same; people want to play. Luckily, it's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013">GDC </a>to the rescue!<br />
<br />
While the rest of the world won't actually get to access <em>City of Steam</em> until it launches open beta (which is anticipated to be within the next two months!), I was able to dive in and explore the fruits of the devs' winter labors. And let me tell you, they've put their time to good use! I met with Communications Manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Gabriel-Laforge/">Gabriel Laforge</a> and Operations Director Andrew Woodruff from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mechanist-games">Mechanist Games</a> who showed off all the work that has gone into the game since the beta closed, from graphics to crafting to airships. They also highlighted the game's cash shop and revealed numerous rewards players can earn simply by playing the game.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/05/gdc-2013-city-of-steam-demo-showcases-crafting-and-other-stream/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: City of Steam demo showcases crafting and other streamlined features</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/05/gdc-2013-city-of-steam-demo-showcases-crafting-and-other-stream/">GDC 2013: City of Steam demo showcases crafting and other streamlined features</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 05 Apr 2013 16:30:00 EST. At a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013">GDC</a> panel titled "Next Generation Character Rendering" last week, research and development staffers at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Activision/">Activision</a>-<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a> showed off some stunning computer-generated portraits. The catch? They don't represent in-game assets; instead, they showcase the tech behind the graphics.<br />
<br />
So while these we won't be seeing the lady above as the protagonist of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Titan/">Titan</a>,</em> it's reasonable to expect that the characters of Blizzard's future games could look just as convincing and real. As I looked on from the audience, my iPhone's camera focused on the projected slides as if they beheld actual faces.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/04/gdc-2013-activisions-pursuit-of-photorealism/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: Activision's pursuit of photorealism</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/04/gdc-2013-activisions-pursuit-of-photorealism/">GDC 2013: Activision's pursuit of photorealism</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 04 Apr 2013 16:00:00 EST. When we talk about getting our hands on a game at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013/">GDC</a> for a little playtime, we don't usually get to literally grasp said game in our fingers. But that's exactly what happened when I tested out <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/vendetta-online">Vendetta Online</a></em> on an iPad 3; instead of just relating to the space-based sandbox through the standard accessories like mouse, keyboard, or joystick, I held the entirety of the game universe in the palms of my hands. My own 10 digits were the only accessories. And the experience impressed me!<br />
<br />
I had the opportunity to sit down with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-bergman">John Bergman</a>, Founder and CEO of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/guild-software">Guild Software</a>, to talk about the new iOS platform for <em>Vendetta Online</em> while doing my best <a href="http://i1.cdnds.net/12/31/618x464/movies_goose_top_gun_1.jpg">Goose impersonation</a> (he's way better than Maverick) playing it.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/gdc-2013-hands-on-with-vendetta-online-on-the-ipad/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: Hands-on with Vendetta Online on the iPad</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/gdc-2013-hands-on-with-vendetta-online-on-the-ipad/">GDC 2013: Hands-on with Vendetta Online on the iPad</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 03 Apr 2013 18:30:00 EST. <em>Acquisition.</em> Though it sounds pretty benign on its own, when used in reference to one developer taking over another, the word can inspire fear in the hearts of gamers. Questions quickly arise about the future of titles that fall on the acquired side of the equation. How will the games and players be affected by the change? Will there even still <em>be</em> a game?<br />
<br />
I sat down with Claas Wolter (European PR Manager) and Deanna Peter (Marketing/PR Associate) to discuss just this topic regarding the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/01/webzen-buys-100-of-gala-net-gpotato/">recent purchase</a> of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gala-net">Gala-Net</a> (the parent company of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gpotato">gPotato</a>) by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/webzen/">Webzen</a> and how that acquisition will affect <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/allods-online/">Allods Online</a>, </em><em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/age-of-wulin/">Age of Wulin</a></em>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/terra-militaris/"><em>Terras Militaris</em></a>, and the company's other MMORPGs.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/gdc-2013-the-mmo-impact-of-the-webzen-and-gala-net-merge/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: The MMO impact of the Webzen and Gala-Net merge</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/gdc-2013-the-mmo-impact-of-the-webzen-and-gala-net-merge/">GDC 2013: The MMO impact of the Webzen and Gala-Net merge</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 03 Apr 2013 14:30:00 EST. 	<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/02/raph-koster-is-open-to-making-another-worldy-mmo/"><img alt="Raph Koster may make another 'worldy MMO'" data-src-height="321" data-src-width="530" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/04/raph.jpg" /></a></div>
<a href="http://www.raphkoster.com/2013/04/02/moving-on-from-playdomdisney/">On his personal blog</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/raph-koster/">Raph Koster</a> announced that he has left <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/disney">Disney</a> to become an unemployed game developer. The big question is, of course, what's next for the driving force behind <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/ultima-online"><em>Ultima Online</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-galaxies/"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a>. The answer is... he doesn't know.<br />
<br />
However, Koster does indicate that he is open to working on another traditional MMO, but not one born of Kickstarter. "I suspect that those of you who want this all want me to make a worldy MMO," he writes. "I may yet make one of those in the future, but I don't think that you can raise enough money on Kickstarter to do it justice."<br />
<br />
Koster says that he might be doing some consulting, writing, and speaking, but what he wants to do most is to "simply start making games." He claims that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/gdc-2013">GDC</a> inspired him to get back into the game-making business, big-time. He also says contrary to some rumors, <a href="https://twitter.com/raphkoster/status/319143878441701376">he is not working with Richard Garriott</a> on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/shroud-of-the-avatar"><em>Shroud of the Avatar</em></a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/02/raph-koster-is-open-to-making-another-worldy-mmo/">Raph Koster is open to making another 'worldy MMO'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 02 Apr 2013 15:30:00 EST. MJ returns from her grand <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013">GDC</a> adventure, and boy does she have stories to tell! Most of those stories will be to her therapist who will help her overcome the trauma of five days of non-stop interviews, but some of those tales will be related in this podcast. Also, you won't hear her sing <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_sfnQDr1-o">the baby monkey song</a>, but she totally did before we started recording and it was awesome. You had to be there.<br />

<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/-World-of-Warplanes/"> World of Warplanes</a></em> is still in testing, but it's been playable at a few events now and has staked its claim as a distinct entity from <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Tanks/">World of Tanks</a></em>. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Wargaming.net/">Wargaming.net</a>'s CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Victor-Kislyi/">Victor Kislyi</a> and global operations director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Vlad-Beloserov/">Vlad Beloserov</a> were at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013/">GDC</a> recently showing off more highlights from the game, which promises to deliver exactly the sort of high-energy dogfights you would hope for.<br />
<br />
As it stands now, the game has about 10 maps and 100 planes. Each of the planes can be fully customized, while each map is meant to play differently rather than just being different background scenery -- some maps are foggy, some have skyscrapers or mountains, some are set at different times of day, and so forth.<br />
<br />
Actual gameplay has continued to receive polish tweaks; the game retains both easy and expert control modes, with the latter playing more like a flight simulator and the former allowing you to simply point your mouse in the direction you want to fly. Enemy planes and your own can be riddled with holes that show the sky through your shredded wings, and the UI allows you to track your plane's optimal speed and altitude to maximize performance in combat.<br />
<br />
One extra tidbit revealed on the show floor was that players of both <em>World of Tanks </em>and <em>World of Warplanes</em> can reap extra benefits from both games, as experience earned in the former can be used to improve in the latter. While there's no set release date for the game at this time, the game continues to impress and will be flying into more open testing as soon as Wargaming.net's teams are happy with its performance in smaller test venues.<br />

So March's gaming convention madness is in our rearview mirror (although some coverage is still trickling in during the early part of this week). There were plenty of big reveals and plenty of smaller details, too, and chances are there was something that caught your eye from our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013">GDC</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-east-2013">PAX East</a> coverage over the past two weeks.<br />
<br />
For today's Leaderboard, let's pit a few of the noteworthy reveals against one another to see which game excited the Massively commentariat the most. Vote after the cut.<br />

By now, pretty much everyone knows the story of how <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamers-first">GamersFirst</a> swept in to save the DOA <em>All Points Bulletin</em> by relaunching it as <a href="http://apbreloaded.gamersfirst.com/"><em>APB: Reloaded</em></a>. Since then, the title's done immensely well for the company and has prompted <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Reloaded-Games/">Reloaded Games</a> to look into turning <a href="http://apbreloaded.gamersfirst.com/"><em>APB</em></a> into a bona fide franchise.<br />
<br />
How this happened was explained to us by PR Manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/darek-connole">Darek Connole</a> at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013">GDC</a>. Connole said that the devs are constantly taking suggestions from the community and sorting them into different buckets. While some of the buckets represent doable ideas, one bucket is full of great ideas that are impossible to implement in the current game.<br />
<br />
"We're taking the NPCs from <em>APB: Reloaded</em> and bringing them into their own game," Connole said. "It's going to be a traditional first-person shooter, but it's also going to have non-traditional elements."<br />

Hey, is that CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chris-taylor">Chris Taylor</a> from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gas-powered-games">Gas Powered Games</a>? By jove, it is! At <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013">GDC</a> this past week we had the opportunity to catch up with Taylor and see how his studio is doing following its acquisition by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wargaming.net">Wargaming.net</a>. He said that the synergy between his studio and Wargaming.net is powerful: "Our overlap is enormous between what we believe in as a company and what Wargaming believes in."<br />
<br />
We were most curious about the "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/21/gas-powered-games-working-on-mystery-mmo/">mystery MMO</a>" that Taylor and his team is constructing. "We are doing research and prototyping on our first Wargaming game," Taylor said, "which will be a huge PvP, free-to-play MMO. It's going to take a little while to get it rolling, and we'll talk about it more once we know it is exactly. We'll announce it down the road."<br />
<br />
Is there anything else that he was willing to share about it? Taylor paused and said, "It's going to be the biggest game we've ever made."<br />

This week we have a special <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013/">GDC</a> edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Some-Assembly-Required/">Some Assembly Required</a>. I had the opportunity to sit down with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chris-roberts">Chris Roberts</a> and talk about his highly anticipated space sim sandbox, <em><a href="http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/">Star Citizen</a></em>. We talked lore, the game's PvP/PvE sliders and living universe concepts, guilds, and when players can expect to get in some dogfighting. Roberts also delved deeply into the crafting and economic aspects of the game.<br />
<br />
If you miss the days of carving out a name for yourself and your wares and/or cornering the market and building an economic empire, you'll definitely want to keep an eye on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/star-citizen/"><em>Star Citizen</em></a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/30/gdc-2013-chris-roberts-expounds-on-star-citizens-crafting-ec/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: Chris Roberts expounds on Star Citizen's crafting, economy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/30/gdc-2013-chris-roberts-expounds-on-star-citizens-crafting-ec/">GDC 2013: Chris Roberts expounds on Star Citizen's crafting, economy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 30 Mar 2013 14:00:00 EST. He knows perhaps what the game's strengths and appeal might be, knows why it hosts over 1.7 million players. In Hall's "Designing DayZ" lecture at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013/">GDC</a> this week, the focus was on his philosophy in shaping the game.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/29/gdc-2013-dean-hall-on-the-pillars-of-dayzs-design/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: Dean Hall on the pillars of DayZ's design</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/29/gdc-2013-dean-hall-on-the-pillars-of-dayzs-design/">GDC 2013: Dean Hall on the pillars of DayZ's design</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 29 Mar 2013 19:00:00 EST. On Tuesday, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE</a> shared <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/26/soe-talks-forgelight-engine-planetside-2-player-app/">a trailer</a> highlighting its Forgelight engine. The proprietary engine not only runs <em><a href="http://www.planetside2.com">PlanetSide 2</a></em> but will also be the foundation for all the studio's future games, including <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next/">EverQuest Next</a>. The same press release also introduced the upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside-2"><em>PS2</em></a> app. Although it won't be available to the public for a a bit, I had a chance to sit with senior art director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tramell-isaac">Tramell Issac</a> to see the app in action as well as discuss the Forgelight engine and what's coming up for <em>PS2</em>.<br />

The app provides easy access to a ton of gameplay info, from personal stats to weapon information to real-time in-game map updates, and consequently there could be a marked decrease in workplace productivity in store for <em>PS2</em> fans!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/29/gdc-2013-isaac-on-planetside-2s-new-app-forgelights-future/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: PlanetSide 2's new app and the future of Forgelight</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/29/gdc-2013-isaac-on-planetside-2s-new-app-forgelights-future/">GDC 2013: PlanetSide 2's new app and the future of Forgelight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 29 Mar 2013 11:00:00 EST. If you've been following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare</a> for any length of time, then you know <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/james-ohlen/">James Ohlen</a>. When I interviewed him a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/30/redefining-mmos-more-developers-weigh-in/">couple of years back</a> at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-east/">PAX East</a> and again <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/13/epic-in-scope-swtors-james-ohlen-explains-plans-for-the-future/">last year</a> at the <a href="http://swtor.com/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> guild summit, I could feel his sincere passion for the game. Ohlen joined the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>SWTOR</em></a> project at its inception and held the creative director position for well over half a decade. <em>SWTOR</em> is as much his game as anyone's.<br />
<br />
As is common at the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013/">Game Developers Conference</a>, developers speak candidly to other future game-creators about the inner workings of their studios' biggest projects. Sometimes those tales are cautionary; some are inspiring. This time, Ohlen's told the story of <em>SWTOR</em>, the game that currently holds the record as the second largest subscription MMO ever, and how free-to-play turned what could have been a tale of utter failure into a story of success.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/29/gdc-2013-james-ohlen-on-how-f2p-saved-swtor/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: James Ohlen on how F2P saved SWTOR</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/29/gdc-2013-james-ohlen-on-how-f2p-saved-swtor/">GDC 2013: James Ohlen on how F2P saved SWTOR</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 29 Mar 2013 09:00:00 EST. As <a href="http://www.ageofwushu.com/"><em>Age of Wushu</em></a> is just a couple of weeks away from launch at this point, catching up with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/snail-games">Snail Games</a> at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013">GDC</a> this year was one of our highest priorities. We tagged and bagged Associate Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-miller/">Colin Miller</a> for a brief interview about the latest pre-launch decisions and preparations that the team is making.<br />
<br />
Miller had a lot to say about the tweaks and improvements that have been done to this martial arts sandbox. A huge amount of work has been poured into cleaning up the localization over the beta period, not to mention the interface. "Most of our feedback was pretty negative on the UI that we had in place, so we've been trying to rework that a bit," he said. "Hopefully there's going to be some improvements there."<br />
<br />
All systems are go for an April 10th launch, Miller assured us. Keep reading after the break for more on what Snail Games plans for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-wushu/"><em>Age of Wushu</em></a> after it goes live.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/gdc-2013-age-of-wushus-world-is-your-playground/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: Age of Wushu's world is your playground</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/gdc-2013-age-of-wushus-world-is-your-playground/">GDC 2013: Age of Wushu's world is your playground</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Mar 2013 16:30:00 EST. How many times have you found yourself asking, "Why won't the devs just listen?!" For any loyal MMO fan, it can be extremely frustrating to see feedback seemingly get ignored, and sometimes it feels as if there's a huge wall separating the fans from the developers.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Linda-Carlson/">Linda Carlson</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE's</a> Director of Global Community Relations, spoke with Massively at this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX-East-2013/">PAX East</a> to talk about SOE's efforts to break down that wall and improve the relationship between players and developers into something that's more collaborative, rather than contentious. Whether you're the most loyal SOE fan or someone who's vowed never to play another SOE game, you might be surprised at what she has to say.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/pax-east-2013-soes-linda-carlson-on-the-state-of-the-community/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX East 2013: SOE's Linda Carlson on the state of the community</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/pax-east-2013-soes-linda-carlson-on-the-state-of-the-community/">PAX East 2013: SOE's Linda Carlson on the state of the community</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Mar 2013 11:00:00 EST. We first learned about <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online/">DC Universe Online's</a></em> housing system last fall at SOE Live, where we got the scoop on the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/20/soe-live-2012-a-deeper-look-at-dcuos-housing-lairs/">personal lairs</a> coming in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Home-Turf/">Home Turf</a> DLC from creative director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jens-andersen">Jens Andersen</a>. At that time, he also shared his vision of expanding to include league housing sometime in the future.<br />
<br />
While sitting down with Andersen for a chat at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013/">GDC</a> yesterday, the conversation turned to the now two-month-old housing system. The discussion included how the community was utilizing this unique blend of housing and PvP duels. Andersen then shared some tips for decorating with an eye towards battles; he also hinted that league housing may be slated for making an appearance in one of the game's upcoming DLCs.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/gdc-2013-dcuos-andersen-talks-housing-hints-at-league-version/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: DCUO's Andersen talks housing, hints at league version</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/gdc-2013-dcuos-andersen-talks-housing-hints-at-league-version/">GDC 2013: DCUO's Andersen talks housing, hints at league version</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Mar 2013 10:00:00 EST. Last fall, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/runewaker">Runewaker</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> announced <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dragons-prophet">Dragon's Prophet</a></em>, a free-to-play fantasy game focused on -- you guessed it -- dragons. Since then, we've been treated to various videos detailing the classes, the starter zones, and other gameplay. Just last week the game entered <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/14/dragons-prophet-flies-into-na-closed-beta-march-19/">closed beta</a> in North America, allowing select folks the chance to get in and test out the current stage of the game.<br />
<br />
This week, I joined those folks in-game during my hands-on and demo at this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013/">GDC</a>. I was also able to talk with senior producer Todd Carson and associate producer Rod Haza as they demonstrated different aspects of the game at the convention. What delectable tidbits of information about classes, housing, and (of course) dragons did I uncover? The answer awaits after the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/">Dragon's Prophet</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/#5773073"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/windhunters-hold-main-hut_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/#5773074"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/windhunters-hold-main-gate_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/#5773075"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/windhunter-troll-mage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/#5773076"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/underworld-port-airship_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/#5773077"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/tahkar-village-lake_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/gdc-2013-dragons-prophet-demo-and-hands-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: Dragon's Prophet demo and hands-on</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/gdc-2013-dragons-prophet-demo-and-hands-on/">GDC 2013: Dragon's Prophet demo and hands-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Mar 2013 09:00:00 EST. As <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dragons-prophet/"><em>Dragon's Prophet</em></a> flaps and flies toward <a href="https://www.dragonsprophetthegame.com/">a closed beta weekend</a>, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> crew have put together a reveal trailer for this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013/">GDC</a>. Set against the backdrop of some fairly epic music, the trailer shows off dragons, dragons, and even more dragons (with a heavy dollop of the world and combat).<br />
<br />
Our intrepid reporter MJ is putting together a meaty article on <em>Dragon's Prophet </em>for later today, so consider this trailer something to tide you over until the full course is delivered. Enjoy!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/gdc-2013-dragons-prophet-video-reveal/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: Dragon's Prophet video reveal</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/gdc-2013-dragons-prophet-video-reveal/">GDC 2013: Dragon's Prophet video reveal</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 27 Mar 2013 15:30:00 EST. Although <a href="http://www.dust514.com"><em>DUST 514</em></a> is still in open beta, a big update will soon deliver some significant changes to the game, changes that will bring it more in-line with the <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP's</a> vision for this MMOFPS companion to <em><a href="http://www.eveonline.com">EVE Online</a></em>. During a presentation at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013/">GDC 2013</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/thor-gunnarsson/">Thor Gunnarsson</a> (VP of business development) and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/halldor-fannar/">Halldor Fannar</a> (CTO) shared more details about this update, dubbed Uprising after a merc revolt in the title's lore.<br />
<br />
Fannar explained that Uprising focuses on two main themes. "The first theme we are calling 'making it matter.' It's about creating a more meaningful connection between <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a>." While the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/24/eve-evolved-the-battle-for-caldari-prime/">Caldari Prime event</a> was the first step on that journey (20,000 battles took place on the ground), the planetary conquests system in this update will introduce features that will further intertwine the two games. "The other theme is basically visual improvements," Fannar explained, "making the graphics look better, making the graphics run faster, and also adding more graphics." Players will get to see for themselves exactly how these themes play out when the updates releases on May 6th. In the meantime, enjoy our impressions from GDC.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/gdc-2013-dust-514s-uprising-update-conquers-your-ps3-on-may-6/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: DUST 514's Uprising update conquers your PS3 on May 6</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/gdc-2013-dust-514s-uprising-update-conquers-your-ps3-on-may-6/">GDC 2013: DUST 514's Uprising update conquers your PS3 on May 6</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 27 Mar 2013 09:00:00 EST. We just learned of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Infinite-Crisis/">Infinite Crisis</a>' </em>existence on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/25/turbine-entertainment-unveils-infinite-crisis-a-dc-universe-mob/">Monday</a>, but don't expect a long wait to get your hands on the game's various DC Comics characters. The new title is well beyond the here's-an-idea-for-you stage -- in fact, it's already playable!<br />
<br />
So what did this MOBA noob think of the game? Does it do justice to the Justice League? When is beta going to happen so others can get in on the action? And how on earth did <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine-entertainment/">Turbine</a> keep <em>Infinite Crisis </em>a secret so far into its development? After my play session I sat down with Creative Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cardell-Kerr/">Cardell Kerr</a> to discuss some of these burning questions.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/gdc-2013-hands-on-with-infinite-crisis/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: Hands-on with Infinite Crisis</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/gdc-2013-hands-on-with-infinite-crisis/">GDC 2013: Hands-on with Infinite Crisis</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 27 Mar 2013 08:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/386925/bungie-to-make-destiny-reveal-at-gdc/">CVG</a> has sussed out what could be one of the more <a href="http://schedule.gdconf.com/session/14444432/Brave_New_World%3A_New_Bungie_IP">interesting presentations</a> at this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013">Game Developer's Conference</a>. The annual San Francisco-based event will see <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bungie">Bungie</a> writer and design director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/joe-staten">Joe Staten</a> and art director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/christopher-barrett">Christopher Barrett</a> talk up the firm's super secret <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/destiny"><em>Destiny</em></a> project.<br />
<br />
The title, which has at various times been rumored to be an MMO, a <em>Halo</em> spin-off, and a cure for various types of gaming cancer still hasn't seen an official reveal, though Bungie did acknowledge the validity of some leaked assets <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/27/concept-art-and-story-details-leaked-for-bungies-destiny/">late last year</a>.<br />
<br />
If you're curious about <em>Destiny</em>, and anxious to "get a glimpse of the brave new world that has been built, a place where the next ten years of great Bungie adventures will unfold," stay tuned to Massively this March as we'll have multiple reporters on-site to bring you the scoop.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/17/bungie-to-talk-up-destiny-at-gdc-2013/">Bungie to talk up Destiny at GDC 2013</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 Jan 2013 12:00:00 EST. Last week was the final <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-Online/">GDC Online</a>, as the yearly convention moves out to Los Angeles next year under the new name <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-Next/">GDC Next</a>. Coincidentally, developers gave several postmortem talks about some of the classic MMOs of years ago. Among those was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Meridian-59/"><em>Meridian 59</em></a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/damion-schubert/">Damion Schubert</a> took us back in time to look at what it was like as the game prepped for launch and the first few years. What stands out are the incredible stories that came from player interaction and guild rivalries. Whether you're long-time fan or someone who wasn't even born yet when those early games emerged, this trip through the time machine is definitely worth a look!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/18/the-guild-counsel-damion-schubert-remembers-meridian-59-at-gdc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Guild Counsel: Damion Schubert remembers Meridian 59 at GDC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/18/the-guild-counsel-damion-schubert-remembers-meridian-59-at-gdc/">The Guild Counsel: Damion Schubert remembers Meridian 59 at GDC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 18 Oct 2012 12:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.gdconline.com/">GDC Online</a> was fantastic this year. Really, it's great every year, but I found more bits of goodness this time around than ever before. It's simply my favorite convention, possibly because it's aimed more at press and devs than at fans. There's a wonderful lack of loudspeakers booming dance music and only a handful of booth babes. In other words, GDC Online is quieter, smaller and more professional than a typical fan convention. For a grumpy old gamer like yours truly, it's heaven. I can actually <em>talk</em> to developers without having to scream over music.<br />
<br />
What did I find, and what excited me this year? A <em>lot</em>. We've already <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-online-2012/">written up or recorded many interviews</a> so far, but I wanted to take this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Free-for-All/">Free for All</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mmobility/">MMObility</a> to recap the stuff that truly got me excited.<br />
<br />

Trying to create a virtual world that's engaging and compelling is no easy task. But for an adult designer, trying to do so for a young audience is even more challenging. Kids' interests are not necessarily the same as adults' interests, and their life experiences are much different. On top of that, you can't even lump all child age groups together; a four-year-old, nine-year-old, and 12-year-old are all tackling vastly different challenges in their lives.<br />
<br />
At this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-Online/">GDC Online</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/elizabeth-mclaren">Elizabeth McLaren</a> from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/1st-Playable-Productions/">1st Playable Productions</a> gave a talk about this very topic, titled Short Attention Span Theatre -- Writing for Child Gamers. In it, she looked to the book publishing industry to see what themes and interests exist for particular age groups and how they can be integrated into video game writing. Read on for highlights of the panel and a brief look at the mind of a child gamer.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/17/mmo-family-exploring-game-writing-for-short-attention-spans/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MMO Family: Exploring game writing for short attention spans</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/17/mmo-family-exploring-game-writing-for-short-attention-spans/">MMO Family: Exploring game writing for short attention spans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 11:00:00 EST. F2P is the "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/11/gdc-online-2012-f2p-is-the-platform-of-the-future/">platform of the future</a>!" No, F2P is "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/12/gdc-2012-ethics-panel-takes-aim-at-freemium-labels-it-enterta/">entertainment socialism</a>" that preys on the mentally ill! The participants in this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-Online-2012/">GDC Online</a> in Austin, Texas, didn't exactly solve the business model problems posed by the modern MMO industry, but they sure did provoke some passionate commentary from the folks at home.<br />

What do goat herding and community management have to do with one another? On the surface, you'd probably think not much, but at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-Online/">GDC Online</a> this week, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a> Head of Global Relations <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Linda-Carlson/">Linda "Brasse" Carlson</a> explained the parallels between her job as Community Manager and her job as a goat herder.<br />
<br />
In the talk, though, she not only gave advice on how to run a community management team but also shared some interesting observations about some of SOE's online communities in general. In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-Tattered-Notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, we'll look at some of the highlights.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/13/the-tattered-notebook-linda-carlson-on-goat-herding-and-communi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Linda Carlson on goat herding and community management</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/13/the-tattered-notebook-linda-carlson-on-goat-herding-and-communi/">The Tattered Notebook: Linda Carlson on goat herding and community management</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 13 Oct 2012 16:00:00 EST. Everyone loves zombies. We all enjoy shooting them to bits, pummeling them with a hammer, and watching them die... again. But I'd been feeling a bit tired of the zombie genre, even though some of my favorite titles are heavy on the zombs. Then I sat down and played through a bit of <a href="http://thewarz.com/"><em>The War Z</em></a>, a new post-apocalyptic horror shooter MMO that tosses players on servers up to 60 miles square and holding up to 250 players. Those zones are chock-full of zombies, so players who care to risk it all can hope to survive as they run, gun, and generally get their wits scared out of them.<br />
<br />
I wasn't alone during my short time in the game, thanks to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/alex-josef/">Alex Josef</a>, Director of Communications for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Hammerpoint-Interactive/">Hammerpoint Interactive</a> We sat down for an interview and wound up smashing zombie heads with a flashlight. Ah, the perils of writing about games! Join me past the cut to read what I thought.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wargaming.net">Wargaming.net</a> CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/viktor-kislyi">Viktor Kislyi</a> is a busy man in charge of one of the fastest-growing online studios in the world. Since the launch of <a href="http://worldoftanks.com/"><em>World of Tanks</em></a> and its rise to superstar status, Wargaming.net has grown to encompass 1,200 people in 11 offices around the world. Half of these are developers on the studio's three main projects, while the other half run support for the highly lucrative <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-tanks/"><em>World of Tanks</em></a>.<br />
<br />
With <em>World of Tanks</em> under their belts, Kislyi and his team are preparing to press the starter switch for <a href="http://worldofwarplanes.com/"><em>World of Warplanes</em></a>. If you haven't paid much attention to it yet, perhaps you should, particularly if you're a fan of flight simulators. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warplanes/"><em>World of Warplanes</em></a> covers the early days of air combat from 1930s-era biplanes to Korean War jet fighters.<br />
<br />
We grabbed a few minutes of Kislyi's time at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-online-2012">GDC Online</a> this week to see how <em>World of Warplanes</em> was shaping up and whether there were any new surprises that the team was prepared to reveal at the event. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/paul-barnett/">Paul Barnett</a> is a great storyteller with a passion for games. Anyone who followed <em><a href="http://warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a></em> early on can't forget the engaging speeches and videos Barnett made through beta and launch. But it's no longer 2007, and he's long since moved on from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online/"><em>Warhammer</em></a>. Instead, he's been working on <a href="http://ultimaforever.com"><em>Ultima Forever</em></a>, a browser-based, online rendition of <em>Ultima IV</em>. This week at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-Online/">GDC Online</a>, he told the story of how the game came to be. He was given a chicken and a spoon and told to go away and try to make something. The only boundaries was that he couldn't have any other stuff, the game had to be good, and he had to do it quick and without help.<br />
<br />
Did Barnett succeed with his chicken and spoon? Read on for Barnett's tale of <i>Ultima Forever</i> as well as a look at the lessons he learned along the way.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/12/gdc-online-2012-paul-barnett-reimagines-ultima-with-a-chicken-a/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC Online 2012: Paul Barnett reimagines Ultima with a chicken and a spoon</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/12/gdc-online-2012-paul-barnett-reimagines-ultima-with-a-chicken-a/">GDC Online 2012: Paul Barnett reimagines Ultima with a chicken and a spoon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 12 Oct 2012 14:30:00 EST. Ethics in game design was a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/11/the-guild-counsel-the-ethics-of-gaming/">hot topic</a> at this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-online-2012">GDC Online</a>. Free-to-play is, of course, on everyone's mind, and <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/179264/When_does_effective_freetoplay_design_become_an_ethical_matter.php#.UHgMtcXA9VU">one panel in particular</a> stood in sharp contrast to the steady stream of positivity surrounding the model in most quarters.<br />
<br />
The sit-down featured a handful of developers including representatives from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/amazon">Amazon</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bobber-interactive">Bobber Interactive</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/immersyve">Immersyve</a>. "This whole concept of freemium play, in my opinion, is the most radical form of entertainment socialism since Obama got elected," said Bobber's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/scott-dodson">Scott Dodson</a>. "You've got a whole bunch of one-percenters paying for a bunch of freeloaders."<br />
<br />
Senior Amazon designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/nik-davidson">Nik Davidson</a> likened the industry to a gold rush and also poked fun at the supposition that big spenders are acting responsibly. "We like to think that the ones spending vast sums on these games are sons of Dubai oligarchs, but we have the data to prove that they're not, and that they probably can't afford to spend what they're spending," Davidson said. "We're saying our market is suckers -- we're going to cast a net that catches as many mentally ill people as we can!"<br />
<br />
Immersyve's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/scott-rigby">Scott Rigby</a> chimed in as well. "What do we call our best customers these days? I'm not sure I'd want to be called a whale by anybody. Sticky is not, generally, a good quality. I think we have this subtle language of control for our customers, and when paired with our ability to collect data, it raises some interesting ethical questions," he said.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/12/gdc-2012-ethics-panel-takes-aim-at-freemium-labels-it-enterta/">GDC Online 2012: Ethics panel roasts freemium, labels it 'entertainment socialism'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 12 Oct 2012 09:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/free-to-play/">Free-to-play</a>. That single word elicits some strong emotions when uttered in the MMO gaming community, emotions generating declarations of genre fidelity to spurts of vitriol. It's definitely a love/hate hot topic. And according to market trends presented at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-online-2012/">GDC Online 2012</a>, free-to-play is not going anywhere. Not only has F2P got its foot in the market share's door, but it's kicked that door down and is moving in.<br />
<br />
During the presentation, titled Free-to-Play Market Trends and Metrics, Dr. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Joost-van-Dreunen/">Joost van Dreunen</a> explored the recent market performance of the free-to-play genre and shared predictions about the future. <div>
	At <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-Online/">GDC Online</a> this week, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a> President <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/John-Smedley/">John Smedley</a> gave a keynote address titled Free-to-play: Driving the Future of MMOs. In it, he explains SOE's (and other studios') shift toward a free-to-play model lets MMOs keep up with an ever-changing industry.</div>
<br />
But the talk actually went beyond the notion of free-to-play and into the larger picture of how SOE is reinventing its games to include more emergent gameplay and take advantage of new trends in media. Read on for a broad look at the past decade of trends in the industry and a glimpse of what the future holds for SOE titles.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/11/gdc-online-2012-john-smedleys-keynote-on-mmo-trends-and-the-fu/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC Online 2012: John Smedley's keynote on MMO trends and the future of gaming</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/11/gdc-online-2012-john-smedleys-keynote-on-mmo-trends-and-the-fu/">GDC Online 2012: John Smedley's keynote on MMO trends and the future of gaming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 11 Oct 2012 13:30:00 EST. Sandboxes get a lot of flak in today's themepark-dominated MMO industry. That said, sandbox developers who do it right will be laughing all the way to bank, according to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> senior designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/matthew-woodward">Matthew Woodward</a>.<br />
<br />
Woodward recently gave a talk at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-online-2012">GDC Online</a> titled The Other White Meat: Design Architecture for Sandbox Games. The presentation focused on the three pillars used by the firm to power its long-running <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> MMORPG. Woodward stressed social aspects, goals and goal-driven players, and most importantly, emergent gameplay.<br />
<br />
"The big win is that emergence is cheap. A lot of emergent gameplay discussion is about the One Big Moment. In <em>EVE</em>, the big heist that happened six years ago, in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/ultima-online"><em>Ultima Online</em></a>, the assassination of Lord British," Woodward explained. "If you do this well, people will play your game forever. People will pay for it forever."<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/age-of-wushu"><em>Age of Wushu's</em></a> sporting a new trailer at this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-online-2012">GDC Online</a> convention, and the clip features nearly three minutes' worth of wall-scaling, roof-running, kung-fu-fighting fun. If you can take your eyes off the aerial hijinks for a moment or two, you'll also get a glimpse of <em>AoW's</em> gorgeous environments, which run the gamut from snowy mountainscapes to sunlit gorges and idyllic ancient Chinese villages.<br />
<br />
