Although <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s combat isn't twitch-based, the outcome is often swayed by strong tactical and strategic influences. Whether you're running missions, battling Sleeper AI in a wormhole site or engaging other players in PvP, chances are you've pulled off a few fancy tactical maneuvers. Over the years, we learn these little tricks and teach them to each other. From mundane ways to avoid damage from NPCs to the cat and mouse games we play with other players, tactical maneuvers are a big part of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>'s gameplay. In this short article, I look at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/28/the-10-commandments-of-eve/">a few of the tips</a> and tactics players use to gain an edge in combat.<br />
<br />
<strong>Angular velocity:</strong><br />
If you've ever used a turret-based ship and found yourself missing enemies a lot, there are a few tricks you can do to even the score. Open the overview settings menu and under "column" select "Angular Velocity". This shows the transverse velocity of enemy ships relative to your own in radians per second, which is the same measurement your turret tracking score uses. By checking the show-info pane on your guns, you can look up the maximum tracking speed of your guns. Ships with an angular velocity greater than your turret's tracking speed will be practically impossible to hit so having this information on-hand means you can avoid picking targets that will just waste your time and ammo. Another useful trick to do is to match your course and speed as closely as you can with an enemy ship rather than just approaching it. This will decrease their angular velocity relative to your ship, allowing you to hit some fast ships you otherwise wouldn't be able to.<br />
<br />
Skip past the cut for four more interesting tactics and tips. Do you have a particularly useful tip or a clever tactical maneuver you use a lot? Leave a comment and let us know what it is.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/10/eve-evolved-five-interesting-combat-tactics/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Five interesting combat tactics</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/10/eve-evolved-five-interesting-combat-tactics/">EVE Evolved: Five interesting combat tactics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 10 Jan 2010 18:00:00 EST. A common theme in popular MMOs today is the idea of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/exploration">exploration</a>. For a surprisingly large number of players, their reason for playing an MMO is to experience new content and explore new lands. Each <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/launches/">new MMO or expansion </a>becomes a new country to explore with its own set of features and game mechanics. Limits such as levels, raid progression and quest chains are used to ensure we don't burn through all the game's content too quickly. <br /><br /><strong>New Eden:</strong><br /><a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is set in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">expansive universe of New Eden</a>. This nebular stellar nursery contains thousands of stars, of which approximately 5000 have been explored and added to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/22/one-shots-genesis/">the game's stargate network</a>. Even though <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> doesn't have level limits, it does have a familiar approach to exploring content. Some content such as difficult complexes (space dungeons) will not be completable solo and other content like level 4 missions will be so difficult as to require large ships with a lot of skills behind them. The majority of the universe, however, is free to explore from day one and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/exploring-new-eden/1193286/">there's a lot to explore</a>.<br /><br />In this visual article, I explore some of the stunning content of <em>EVE Online</em> and take a brief look at what the future holds for explorers in New Eden.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/exploring-new-eden/">Exploring New Eden</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/exploring-new-eden/#1193289"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/nyphpostcard_thumbnail.jpg" alt="The Blue Planet" title="The Blue Planet" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/exploring-new-eden/#1193284"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/2008.11.30.16.36.43_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Acceleration gate" title="Acceleration gate" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/exploring-new-eden/#1193285"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/2008.11.30.17.05.52_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Yan Jung ruins" title="Yan Jung ruins" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/exploring-new-eden/#1193288"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/2008.11.30.17.10.51_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Azure Canyon tourist resort" title="Azure Canyon tourist resort" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/exploring-new-eden/#1193351"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/2008.11.30.18.22.15_thumbnail.jpg" alt="The Caldari titan" title="The Caldari titan" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/30/eve-evolved-exploring-new-eden/">EVE Evolved: Exploring New Eden</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 30 Nov 2008 20:00:00 EST. However, the real action in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> occurs in lowsec or more lawless tracts of space -- where players themselves determine what the game is, not <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP's</a> mission designers. But if you've played <em>EVE</em> for any length of time and ventured out into lowsec or 0.0 space, you've no doubt encountered -- or been a part of -- a gatecamp.<br /><br />That ambush waiting on the other side of a star gate is ubiquitous in <em>EVE,</em> and is pretty much a core tactic used in the game. If you're on the pain-giving end of the scenario, you've probably got little to fear if the numbers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/07/rogue-signal-tackling-tackling/">(and warp disruption capabilities)</a> are on your side, save for those sentry guns... and the occasional billboard packing heat. However, for those attempting to survive gatecamps that block access to a given destination, or bypass them altogether, there are a few things you'll need to know. Xiphos, of <a href="http://www.agony-unleashed.com/news.php ">Agony Unleashed</a> PvP school, has lived in 0.0 for roughly two years and recently imparted some tips on surviving gatecamps.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/25/surviving-gatecamps-in-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Surviving gatecamps in EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/25/surviving-gatecamps-in-eve-online/">Surviving gatecamps in EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 25 Sep 2008 20:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is by design a darker game than most other MMOs, which means certain actions unthinkable in other games are allowed in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE's</em></a> setting of New Eden. It's a game that rewards cunning and brutally punishes stupidity. <br /><br />Players can assume many roles in New Eden, but the villains in a story are often the most interesting. In <em>EVE,</em> you get to be one. While there are many wrongs a pilot in New Eden can commit, these are seven of the worst. Some players specialize in one of these 'sins,' while others manage to indulge in all seven.<br /><br />
