Welcome to the last <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/flameseeker-chronicles">Flameseeker Chronicles</a> of 2010, in which I wax sentimental over this year and salivate over what the next one promises.<br />
<br />
It's been a huge year for both <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> and <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> -- probably one of the biggest since <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars 1</em></a> launched. There was civil war in Tyria, with consequences more far-reaching than any of us as players could imagine at the outset. Profession reveals came fast and furious for a while, and when the dust settled, we had extensive information on half of the <em>Guild Wars 2 </em>professions.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010/">Gamescom</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-prime-2010/">PAX</a> brought us actual <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> gameplay, the War in Kryta seemed to go on and on, and there were even some shakeups behind the scenes, with <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> swinging a banhammer of massive proportions and dismantling the Xunlai tournament house. Follow along and let's take a look at what 2010 brought to Tyria.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/27/flameseeker-chronicles-a-look-back-at-2010/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Flameseeker Chronicles: A look back at 2010</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/27/flameseeker-chronicles-a-look-back-at-2010/">Flameseeker Chronicles: A look back at 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 27 Dec 2010 13:00:00 EST. Compared to the rest of us, only a lucky few get the pleasure of attending Gamescom or PAX, so <a href="http://us.ncsoft.com/en/">NCsoft</a> has released a video podcast to let the rest of us in on what's been talked about. Featuring several members of the <em><a href="http://na.aiononline.com/"><em>Aion</em></a> </em>dev team, this podcast highlights some new features of the free expansion, <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Patch+Notes+2.0">Assault on Balaurea</a>. <br />
<br />
Touched on in the video are pets, the increased level cap, the new zones, new flight mechanics, and the new instances (including solo ones!), along with the new Twitter integration -- Right from the UI, players can now tweet, include up to ten of their favorite screenshots, and brag about their in-game exploits without ever tabbing out!<br />
<br />
Whet your appetite for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/16/release-date-announced-for-aion-2-0-assault-on-balaurea/">tomorrow's</a> launch and glide past the cut to watch the podcast.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/06/aion-assault-on-balaurea-podcast/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Aion: Assault on Balaurea podcast</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/06/aion-assault-on-balaurea-podcast/">Aion: Assault on Balaurea podcast</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 06 Sep 2010 18:00:00 EST. </em></a></div>
<a href="http://www.riftgame.com/en/index.php"><em>Rift: Planes of Telara</em></a> made its presence felt at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom 2010</a>, and the folks over at <a href="http://riftnexus.com/index.php?app=ccs">RiftNexus.com</a> have captured a couple of the noteworthy reveals on video. Both the shaman and nightblade soul trees were detailed at the event, and, for those new to the world of Telara, souls represent the game's answer to traditional MMORPG classes, albeit with several unique twists.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.trionworlds.com/">Trion</a> showed off the <a href="http://riftnexus.com/page/articles/_/events/gamescom/the-shaman-soul-tree-r74">shaman's</a> skill tree, and the melee cleric is stocked with abilities including the requisite heals and attacks. The shaman soul also appears to have some debuffing capability, as evidenced by the Vengeance of the Frozen ability that reduces both the strength and the dexterity of a given target. RiftNexus also brings us a brief video of the <a href="http://riftnexus.com/page/articles/_/events/gamescom/partial-nightblade-soul-tree-r75">nightblade's</a> skill tree, and it's clear this particular soul owes much to the classic rogue archetype. You can view both videos after the cut or on <a href="http://riftnexus.com/index.php?app=ccs">RiftNexus.com</a><br />
<br />
The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rift"><em>Rift: Planes of Telara</em></a> team has also been busy outside of the convention circuit, as a <a href="http://www.riftgame.com/en/index.php">revamped website</a> made its debut this week. Check it out for more information on the classes, world lore, and more.<br />

As promised <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/24/a-look-at-gamescom-2010-part-one/">earlier this week</a>, we present part two of our video series documenting <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom 2010</a> from the good people at <a href="http://www.maverickmedia.co.uk/">Maverick Media</a>. In this one, we have a look at <em><a href="http://www.vigilgames.com/dmo">Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online</a>, <a href="http://www.tera-online.com/">TERA</a>, </em><em><a href="http://www.endofnations.com/en/">End of Nations</a>, </em><a href="http://www.darkdaysarecoming.com/"><em>The Secret World</em></a>'s amazing booth and Ben before his morning coffee and makeup.<br />
<br />

This is not your ancestor's necromancer. Much like the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/14/you-can-have-a-shark-as-a-pet-arenanet-unveils-the-guild-wars-2/">ranger</a>, the necromancer in <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> is bigger, badder, and deadlier than her <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> counterpart.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> necro was <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/necromancer/">officially revealed today</a>, and though we've pretty much known it was coming since <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ghosts-of-ascalon">Killeen made fallen soldiers dance</a> in the sewers of Ebonhawke, it's still nice to see descriptions, videos, and screenshots straight from <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a>.<br />
<br />
Follow along after the jump as we take a look at the necro and all of her glowy green skills and abilities.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/25/guild-wars-2-necromancer-revealed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Guild Wars 2 necromancer revealed</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/25/guild-wars-2-necromancer-revealed/">Guild Wars 2 necromancer revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 25 Aug 2010 16:00:00 EST. Gaming publications <a href="http://www.gamestar.de/">Gamestar</a> and <a href="http://www.gamepro.com/">GamePro</a> were keeping an interested watch on the happenings at <a href="http://www.gamescom-cologne.com/en/gamescom/home/index.php">Gamescom</a> last week, and earlier this week they handed out their own round of awards.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.gamigo.com/">Gamigo</a> and <a href="http://www.reakktor.com/">Reakktor Media</a> received top honors in the free-to-play category for <a href="http://www.blackprophecy.com/"><em>Black Prophecy</em></a>, beating out several other nominees including <a href="http://battlestar-galactica.bigpoint.com/"><em>Battlestar Galactica Online</em></a> and <a href="http://www.mytheongame.com/"><em>Mytheon</em></a>, another Gamigo game. "<em>We feel quite honored. This award is recognition for all the hard work our team has put in over the past few years</em>," said <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kirk-lenke">Kirk Lenke</a>, CEO of Reakktor Media. <br />

We here at Massively are becoming ever more excited for <a href="http://www.riftgame.com/en/"><em>Rift: Planes of Telara</em></a>. The more information that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/trion-worlds/">Trion Worlds</a> reveals about the upcoming fantasy MMORPG, the more we crave. Ciovala, webmaster of <a href="http://riftnexus.com/page/articles/_/events/gamescom/rift-at-gc2010-the-nexus-experience-part-one-r62">Riftnexus.com</a>, sends word of a new hands-on review of the title from the recent <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom 2010</a> in Cologne, Germany.<br />
<br />
The initial segment of the multi-part article touches on aspects of character creation and the title's user interface, with more to follow on the game world and gameplay in future installments. Much like we did with our own recent Rift <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/18/massivelys-hands-on-with-rift-planes-of-telaras-dynamic-conte/">hands-on</a>, the reviewer came away impressed. The piece also features two high-definition video segments, both dealing with character customization and both viewable after the cut <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPCfYEluJ0U">or on</a> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPukP0yEcno">YouTube</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/24/rift-character-creation-detailed-with-hd-videos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rift character creation detailed, with HD videos</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/24/rift-character-creation-detailed-with-hd-videos/">Rift character creation detailed, with HD videos</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 20:00:00 EST. Given our notable absence from the largest international game expo of the year, we decided to partner with our friends at Maverick for their impressions of the event and make use of their professional video resources. Those cameras aren't cheap!<br />
<br />
So what is Maverick Media? It's a creative agency that conceives and produces trailers, television commercials and in-game cinematics for video game publishers and developers. The team consists of the guys behind the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiyazhKkK4M"><em>Crysis 2</em> "The Wall" trailer</a>, the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIvlHQedCwY"><em>Bayonetta</em> "In for the Kill" commercials</a>, and all of the <a href="http://www.littlebigplanet.com/"><em>Little Big Planet</em></a> in-game tutorials and intro sequence. In the MMO world, they recently worked with Jagex on the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/10/jagex-releases-stellar-dawn-teaser/">"Brace for Impact" teaser trailer</a> for <a href="http://www.stellardawn.com/date_of_birth.ws?status=0&amp;targetmod=www&amp;targetpage="><em>Stellar Dawn</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Our combined aim at this year's Gamescom was to gather opinions and insights from informed game execs working in the emerging games space, focusing on their ideas and plans for attracting new gamers into their communities. You'll find part one just after the jump below -- look for part two to drop later this week!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/24/a-look-at-gamescom-2010-part-one/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A look at Gamescom 2010: Part one</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/24/a-look-at-gamescom-2010-part-one/">A look at Gamescom 2010: Part one</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 16:30:00 EST. I did not go to <a href="http://www.gamescom-cologne.com/en/gamescom/home/index.php">Gamescom</a>. I was kind of not anticipating last week at all, because I envisioned it as a week of me looking at all the wonderful things I couldn't have, much like a starving orphan outside a bakery (or maybe a homeless orphan in some player's home instance). I figured it would be very un-fun.<br />
<br />
In fact, the opposite was true. Sure, I couldn't play hands-on, but I enjoyed all the <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> news flooding out of Gamescom just the same. I imagine being there would have made it impossible to take in all of these details from every direction -- it just would have been too overwhelming.<br />
<br />
Don't get me wrong, it's not sour grapes. I would have loved to be there! But since I couldn't, I'm really enjoying my bird's-eye view, so to speak. Even from this point of view, the amount of new information we have is nearly impossible to keep track of, so for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/flameseeker-chronicles">Flameseeker Chronicles</a> this week, I thought I'd take all that we've heard this week and try to distill it into a guide on where you can find information. <br />

Whether you're a human, a Cylon, a human working for the Cylons, a Cylon working for the humans, or a slightly off-kilter Massively editor, <a href="http://battlestar-galactica.bigpoint.com/"><em>Battlestar Galactica Online</em></a> promises to appeal across a wide spectrum. Ten Ton Hammer got in the good graces of Bigpoint at Gamescom this year and <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/bgo/preview-aug-2010">smuggled out information vital to the war effort</a>.<br />
<br />
While it's not even in the alpha stage as of yet, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/battlestar-galactica-online/">BSGO</a> </em>is reportedly looking solid, especially for a browser-based title. The primary focus of this space-shooter MMO is the PvP conflict between human and Cylon forces. Players should expect to handle ships from the series (such as the Viper), but Bigpoint is planning on creating new spacecraft unique to the game. Each ship will handle differently, forcing users to adapt on the fly or die.<br />
<br />
Although the main stage of the game is the struggle to control systems (and their precious, precious resources), you'll be able to explore areas on foot, such as the titular Galactica, although this is mostly for atmosphere and storytelling. For players worried about the game's microtransactions model, Bigpoint promises that everyone will be able to experience the game from beginning to end without being forced to spend a penny.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/22/so-say-we-all-battlestar-galactica-onlines-blueprints-revealed/">So say we all: Battlestar Galactica Online's blueprints revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 22 Aug 2010 20:00:00 EST. After <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/persistent-issues-and-final-fantasy-xiv/">the recent interview</a> confirming that some of the disliked aspects of the game weren't going away, it's understandable that some <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> fans might have felt a bit disheartened. After all, it's easy to feel as if the developers weren't trying to listen to the players at all about their issues. The newest interview to come out of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Gamescom-2010/">Gamescom</a>, however, should help to alleviate some of those fears. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Famitsu/">Famitsu</a>, frequently a good source for game information, had <a href="http://www.ffxivcore.com/topic/11248-famitsu-gamewatch-gamescom-interview/">a chance to chat with some of the team</a> about the game's testing schedule and their interactions with feedback.<br />
<br />
Two of the big issues highlighted are the controls and the user interface -- both polished since earlier phases and both continuing to be polished. The team wants control to be smooth with or without a gamepad, whether you don't have a gamepad or simply choose not to use one. There's also a mention of further classes possible, including pet classes, and the acknowledgment that the development team is currently debating the two-day guildleve timer after all. Take a look at <a href="http://www.ffxivcore.com/topic/11248-famitsu-gamewatch-gamescom-interview/">the full interview</a> if you're interested in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/">Final Fantasy XIV</a></em>, as it covers some interesting ground.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/20/famitsu-interview-covers-the-testing-of-final-fantasy-xiv/">Famitsu interview covers the testing of Final Fantasy XIV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 20 Aug 2010 21:00:00 EST. Love it, hate it or meeky accept it, the terms "freemium" and "free-to-play" come with a lot of baggage these days, sometimes to the point of overshadowing the game itself. When <a href="http://ageofempiresonline.com/"><em>Age of Empires</em></a> fans heard that Microsoft was going to be releasing an online version of the hit RTS series, some of the fans' enthusiasm was tempered by the word that it would adopt the popular freemium business model.<br />
<br />
Microsoft Game Studio's Dave Luehmann was on hand at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010/">Gamescom</a> to assure players that the company isn't out to nickle-and-dime fans to skip parts of the game they don't like. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/age-of-empires-online-freemium-model-not-looking-to-nickel-and/">Joystiq reports</a> that they won't be adopting the same strategy as other F2P models. <em>"I don't like to pay for things I don't like to do, that seems kind of backwards,"</em> Luehmann said. <em> "So how about we produce things that people actually want?"<br />
</em><br />
Instead of purchasing a lot of little items, the studio will simply put up large chunks of content as one-time purchases. These might include a new civilization or an area containing a plethora of quests. Microsoft is still feeling out a fair price point for the additional content, but it pointed to the fact that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/age-of-empires-online/"><em>Age of Empires Online</em></a> will ship with more than 25 hours of completely free entertainment to enjoy.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/20/age-of-empires-online-promises-not-to-nickle-and-dime-players/">Age of Empires Online promises not to nickle-and-dime players</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 20 Aug 2010 12:00:00 EST. There are certain recurring complaints heard about <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a>'s beta, especially with players freely able to share their experiences. The fact that guildleves are on a 48-hour timer and the lack of easy and efficient mana regeneration are two of the more persistent ones, and <a href="http://www.ffxivcore.com/topic/11066-gamescom-2010-coverage/">a recent interview</a> with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Hiromichi-Tanaka/">Hiromichi Tanaka</a> at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Gamescom-2010/">Gamescom</a> address just those complaints among others. But it's not all roses and sunshine -- if you're one of the testers hoping for the guildleve timer to be reduced, you're flat out of luck.<br />
<br />
Tanaka makes it clear that several of these issues are part of the intended design -- guildleves, for instance, are doable solo or in groups, but they aren't meant to just be burned through solo each time they're up. As a result, the team is looking into how to give better incentives to group up and share guildleves. MP regeneration is <em>meant</em> to be difficult, and spells are supposed to be a choice of using up limited resources. Mention "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skaven">Skaven</a>" to your average <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> player, and you'll be treated to an almost instant recitation of all the reasons why the race ought to be playable. It appears that players might be due to get that wish -- as well as a few more wishes -- with the <a href="http://www.onrpg.com/MMO/Warhammer-Online/news/Warhammer-Online-Announces-the-RvR-Pack">announcement of the RvR pack for the game</a>. Although we only have the broadest strokes of an outline for the pack, it promises to expand the game's core focus of PvP with an increase in the renown ranks to 100.<br />
<br />
Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Carrie-Gouskos/">Carrie Gouskos</a> has confirmed the involvement of the Skaven, although she's stated that they'll not be playable directly from level 1. How the integration will take place is unclear, as are most of the fine details, although the pack will clearly be a big change for the game's overall structure. The pack is also meant to move away from the "huge expansion" model that's common in the MMO genre, with the company presumably moving to several smaller expansions on a quicker timetable. It's good news for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Warhammer-Online/">Warhammer Online</a></em> players to <a href="http://www.onrpg.com/MMO/Warhammer-Online/news/Warhammer-Online-Announces-the-RvR-Pack">see what's coming around the bend</a>, especially if players can run about sowing chaos as ravenous rat-men.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/18/warhammer-onlines-rvr-pack-announced/">Warhammer Online's RvR pack announced</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 18 Aug 2010 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a> scheduled quite a few hands-on sessions for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> at <a href="http://www.gamescom.de/en/gamescom/home/index.php">Gamescom</a> this week, and the first reports are beginning to show up from those lucky enough to get playtime on the first day.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://pc.ign.com/articles/111/1113687p1.html">IGN has an overview posted</a> with plenty of exciting new details on character creation, events, weapons, and much more. The demo included quite a few events that the writer stumbled across and a battle with an "<em>enormous, purple, glowing dragon</em>," presumably an unrecognized Shatterer. If you've not seen the write-up yet, it's definitely worth your time.<br />
<br />
While you're at it, pay a visit to the ArenaNet blog as well. The crew back in Seattle is keeping busy, and there is a new blog entry with a video entitled "<a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/video-creating-guild-wars-2-cinematics">Creating <em>Guild Wars 2</em> cinematics</a>."<br />
<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/first-video-of-guild-wars-2-gameplay-released/">Yesterday's footage</a> of <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> being shown at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom</a> caused a huge stir in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>GW2</em></a> community, but it was a little different than the one-on-one demos we've been waiting on. The first video was attendee footage of a developer player in godmode, who was invisible to the enemies for the sake of showing off some details of the game.<br />
<br />
Today, we get the real thing. <a href="http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/30947">1UP has footage of their demo available</a>, and it's a human vs. earth elemental battle on a pretty grand scale. <br />
<br />
That's not the only news coming out of Cologne this morning, though. <a href="http://spong.com/nibble/22210/New-Profession-for-Guild-Wars-2">Spong.com is reporting in a brief blurb</a> that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-johanson">Colin Johanson</a> told them that the necromancer is indeed the next class to be revealed. While <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a> has not announced this anywhere, in the demo video you are able to hear the necro class and a few of its abilities mentioned.<br />
<br />
Follow along after the jump to see the demo firsthand, and don't forget to keep an eye on <a href="http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ncsoft-west">NCsoft's live feed from Gamescom</a>!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/18/gamescom-2010-guild-wars-2-demo-video-available-dev-confirms-n/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gamescom 2010: Guild Wars 2 demo video available, dev confirms necro class</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/18/gamescom-2010-guild-wars-2-demo-video-available-dev-confirms-n/">Gamescom 2010: Guild Wars 2 demo video available, dev confirms necro class</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 18 Aug 2010 10:00:00 EST. We've known for a while now that <a href="http://www.swtor.com/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> is planning to offer players two different specializations for each class, but up until now we've only heard of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/13/bioware-confirms-jedi-advanced-classes/">a couple of them</a>. Today at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010/">Gamescom</a>, however, BioWare unloaded the names and loose descriptions of ten advanced classes. The best part? No Bothans died for this information.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://darthhater.com/2010/08/18/darth-hater-gamescom-2010/">Darth Hater reports</a> that imperial agent characters will have the choice between specializing as snipers (long-range DPS) or operatives (who use stealth and short-range weapons to get up close and personal). If a bounty hunter is more to your liking, then the choice between a powertech and a mercenary should get your imagination racing. Over on the Republic side, troopers will sign up for either commando or vanguard training. Commandos are the tanking line, although we don't know much about vanguards yet. <a href="http://www.swtor-station.com/index.php">SWTOR-Station</a> spied a Zabrak trooper at the BioWare booth, indicating another possible race for the class.<br />
<br />
Force-users are also in store for powerful upgrades. The villainous Sith inquisitors choose their path between a more Force-happy sorcerer or the twin lightsaber-using assassin. Their counterpart, the Jedi consular, has a similar decision to make: that of a shadow, who can use double-bladed lightsabers, or a wizard, who uses a single lightsaber but can heal. Are Star Wars fans ready for wizards and sorcerers in their MMO? Somehow, we think so.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/18/gamescom-2010-bioware-reveals-10-new-advance-classes-for-tor/">Gamescom 2010: BioWare reveals 10 new advanced classes for TOR</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 18 Aug 2010 09:30:00 EST. The newest trailer from the team at <a href="http://universe.lego.com/en-us/splash/default.aspx"><em>LEGO Universe</em></a> gives a closer look at what most players consider to be the core of the game: building and customization.<br />
<br />
Developers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ryan-seabury">Ryan Seabury</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mads-purup">Mads Purup</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/randall-furino">Randall Furino</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/scott-brown">Scott Brown</a> lead us through the different building models that offer varying amounts of freedom and creativity, along with some interesting LEGO twists on character customization. Among other things, the game allows you to decide how you want to die. Do you want to fall apart into a pile of LEGO bricks, or something else?<br />
<br />

Our friends at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/video/a39fedfc">Joystiq</a> have the scoop on the latest trailer for <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>, the forthcoming superhero MMORPG from <a href="http://www.soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a>. Unlike <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/24/soe-and-blur-release-dcuo-story-trailer/">last month's</a> cinematic story trailer, this one is all gameplay, and it features heavy doses of action (yes, that guy did toss a helicopter on top of a skyscraper), as well as a voice-over narrative that hints at how player characters can co-exist with <a href="http://www.dccomics.com/">DC</a> legends while carving out their own niche.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DCUO</em></a> launches in November for both the PC and Playstation 3 platforms, and you can sign up for beta, as well as pre-order, at the game's <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/">official website</a>. Don't forget to fly past the cut to view the trailer.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/gamescom-2010-dc-universe-online-trailer-impresses/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gamescom 2010: DC Universe Online trailer impresses</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/gamescom-2010-dc-universe-online-trailer-impresses/">Gamescom 2010: DC Universe Online trailer impresses</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 17 Aug 2010 20:30:00 EST. Ready for two minutes of new <a href="http://www.tera-online.com"><em>TERA</em></a>-related goodness? Look no further than the latest trailer from <a href="http://www.enmasse.com">En Masse Entertainment</a>, released today at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom 2010</a>. The video features a fair helping of combat gameplay, as well as a plethora of stylized action setups that are obvious homages to the trailers of big-budget action films. <br />
<br />
The trailer also highlights <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tera"><em>TERA's</em></a> emphasis on fine combat control, concluding with the words "take aim, take control, and take action." We'll be more than happy to take a longer look at the game, and you can too via the video found just behind the cut. Alternatively, check it out over at <a href="http://pc.ign.com/dor/objects/14356584/tera-the-exiled-realm-of-arborea/videos/gamescom_tera_trl_trailer_81610.html?show=hi">IGN</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/gamescom-2010-en-masse-releases-new-tera-cinematic/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gamescom 2010: En Masse releases new TERA cinematic</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/gamescom-2010-en-masse-releases-new-tera-cinematic/">Gamescom 2010: En Masse releases new TERA cinematic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 17 Aug 2010 20:00:00 EST. <br />
We've seen the videos of in-game footage, and while they are beautiful, the first live demo is a completely different story for most fans. It's a chance to see <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> in action, and Italian gaming site Multiplayer.it won the race with an uploaded video of the public demo.<br />
<br />
The video is of the charr territory, presumably near the Dragonbrand given the corrupted charr below, and we get our first look at map travel as well as a few other things. With no further delay, let's get to the good stuff: follow along after the jump to see the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> live demo.<br />
<br />
<strike>[<strong>Editor's Note</strong>: The Multiplayer.it stream is being <strong>hammered</strong> right now. If your video has trouble loading, please be patient, or perhaps try again later!]<br />
</strike><br />
[<strong>Editor's Note 2</strong>: Flipped the video over to the YouTube version, as the prior stream was failing to launch.]<br />

<a href="http://www.reakktor.com/">Reakktor Media</a> and <a href="http://www.gamigo.com/">Gamigo</a> have just released a heart-pounding new <a href="http://www.blackprophecy.com/"><em>Black Prophecy</em></a> gameplay trailer at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom 2010</a>. The teaser, which clocks in at just under two minutes, is full of fast and furious space combat footage from the upcoming free-to-play MMORPG. In addition to some quick glances in and around various space stations, you'll get a good look at cockpit views, behind-the-ship perspectives, and some interesting shots of the crafting and trading interface.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/black-prophecy"><em>Black Prophecy</em></a> aims to fill the void in the MMO space-shooter market, and you can learn more about the upcoming title, as well as register for beta, at the <a href="http://www.blackprophecy.com">official website</a>. The first bit of interesting MMO news from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom 2010</a> belongs to <a href="http://www.microsoft.com">Microsoft</a>, as the software giant has announced the latest entry in the venerable <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Empires"><em>Age of Empires</em></a> franchise. <a href="http://www.ageofempiresonline.com"><em>Age of Empires Online</em></a> will offer players the chance to take their city-building adventures to the next level via a persistent online capital that grows even when its owner is offline.<br />
<br />
The new title also features co-op multiplayer questing, trading, and a leveling mechanic in addition to story-based gameplay. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/age-of-empires-online"><em>Age of Empires Online</em></a> will also feature free online gameplay via the <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/games/en-US/index.aspx">Games for Windows</a> platform, as well as a new graphical style that represents something of a stylistic departure from past titles in the series.<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: left;"><em>In light of <a href="http://www.gamescom-cologne.com/en/gamescom/home/index.php">Gamescom</a> coming next week (August 18th - 22nd), this week <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/waging-war">WagingWAR</a> looks forward to what could be coming for </em><a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning</a><em>. But beware: Since Mythic has been so secretive about the future of </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online">WAR</a><em>, we've been forced to compromise and offer mere conjecture. Unchained by reason or fact, we follow in the wake of that terrible beast known only as "Greg's Imagination."</em></div>
<br />
With less than a week left until Gamescom, I find myself more and more excited by the potential of what Mythic could be set to reveal, regardless of the fact that it's given me nothing to chew on. I am hyped by the anti-hype. What follows is the result of that hype. There are no facts, rumours, hints, or tips to back up what amounts to totally unbarred speculation. I have organized the aftermath of my brainstorm in terms of what would excite me, from most to least, followed by why I believe these additions could make sense, and how they might be implemented. Keep in mind that some of what follows could simply be passed off as madness; it might be totally unfeasible, even by the most adept and well-financed of development teams. I'm fully aware of that. The point here was to just "let it go." And I did.<br />
<br />
Crazy, or uncanny -- you decide. Follow along after the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/14/waging-war-gamescom-and-mythics-anti-hype/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Waging WAR: Gamescom and Mythic's anti-hype</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/14/waging-war-gamescom-and-mythics-anti-hype/">Waging WAR: Gamescom and Mythic's anti-hype</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 14 Aug 2010 16:00:00 EST. As <a href="http://www.gamescom.de/en/gamescom/home/index.php">gamescom</a> and <a href="http://www.paxsite.com/paxprime/index.php">PAX</a> approach, a fair amount of attention is on <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a> -- specifically <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>. The prospect of being able to play <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>GW2</em></a> for the first time is an exciting one for fans. <br />
<br />
ArenaNet has released a few details of what we'll see during gameplay over the past week, including the information that we'll be playing with some staff back at the ArenaNet offices. In the most recent blog post, we hear directly from four of those staffers. Bob Green, Joe Belousek, Anthony Ordon, and Joe Longworth are members of the <em>Guild Wars 2</em> QA team, the group working to make sure the demo runs smoothly. Check out the <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/the-road-to-gamescom-assuring-quality">latest ArenaNet blog entry</a> to see what they're most looking forward to in the demo.<br />
<br />
While the demo is easily the main focus of ArenaNet's presence at these events, there is more to check out while you're there. The <a href="http://www.paxsite.com/paxprime/schedule.php">event schedule for PAX Prime</a> was finally released yesterday, and it includes a Saturday morning presentation entitled "Guild Wars 2<em>: Designing Dynamic Events</em>." <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-johanson">Colin Johanson</a> will give insight into how the dynamic event system in <em>GW2</em> was created -- it's a talk that fans won't want to miss.<br />
<br />
It's a ticketed event, so be sure to <a href="http://www.paxsite.com/paxprime/schedule.php">check the schedule</a> for details on how to attend.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/14/arenanet-preparing-for-gamescom-and-pax/">ArenaNet preparing for gamescom and PAX</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 14 Aug 2010 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.gamescom.de/en/gamescom/home/index.php">Gamescom</a> is just a few days away, and <a href="http://www.frogster.de/en/index.html">Frogster</a> has big plans for the event. Whether you're interested in <a href="http://www.tera-europe.com/en/index.html"><em>TERA</em></a>, <a href="http://www.runesofmagic.com/en/index.html"><em>Runes of Magic</em></a>, or <a href="http://www.mythos.com/"><em>Mythos</em></a>, Frogster will have something for you to enjoy.<br />
<br />
Frogster will have 30 terminals set up to play all three games, but there's much more to the schedule. There will be planned <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/runes-of-magic"><em>RoM</em></a> raids, a costume contest, a live performance from <a href="http://www.vancanto.de/">VanCanto</a>, and more. <br />
<br />
The events will take over two exhibition stands, and if you can't attend don't feel too bad. The events will be streaming live from the booth beginning on the 19th to keep even those at home up on the latest news. Check out the <a href="http://www.runesofmagic.com/en/content.php?show=events.gamescom">full schedule of events</a>, and have fun!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/14/frogster-announces-gamescom-activities/">Frogster announces gamescom activities</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 14 Aug 2010 10:00:00 EST. So, despite your best efforts, you still are not currently able to play <em><a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com">Final Fantasy XIV</a>. </em>Not that your computer can't handle the system requirements -- no, it's simply an issue of the release date being painfully distant and your need for the game not subsiding. You've applied for the beta, but no luck. You <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/05/fansites-offering-keys-to-the-final-fantasy-xiv-beta/">entered the fansite contests for beta keys</a>, and still nothing. You tried building a time machine, but you ran into problems when you went shopping for a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeLorean_DMC-12">DeLorean</a>. What else can you possibly do?<br />
<br />
Well, you could try running off to Europe. Specifically, Cologne, where <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Gamescom-2010/">Gamescom 2010</a> will be held. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Square-Enix/">Square-Enix</a> has confirmed that they will be presenting several games at the convention in a playable state, one of which will be <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a>. Most likely it will be from the newest testing build, although there's no word on whether or not the game will be playable by the public or just for press. Keep your eyes peeled to see if any new information comes out of the convention, taking place between the 18th and the 22nd of this month.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/11/final-fantasy-xiv-confirmed-for-gamescom-2010/">Final Fantasy XIV confirmed for Gamescom 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 12:30:00 EST. If you're attending <a href="http://www.gamescom.de/en/gamescom/home/index.php">Gamescom</a> this year, you've probably got a pretty heavy schedule planned. There will be plenty to do, but you might want to carve out some time to head to the <a href="http://www.lotro-europe.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> booth, because <a href="http://www.codemasters.com/">Codemasters</a> has a nice gift for those attending.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/04/lord-of-the-rings-online-going-free-to-play-this-fall/">news of <em>LotRO</em>'s impending free-to-play status</a> was pretty big, and Codemasters will be offering signups at its booth this year. If you've not signed up to join the game when it becomes F2P, do so at the Codemasters booth in hall 8.1, booth A31 and get a little thank-you gift in the form of 10 &euro; worth of <em>LotRO</em> store points.<br />

It's only been a few months since I started writing the <a href="http://us.runesofmagic.com/us/index.html"><em>Runes of Magic</em></a> column, but it seems much longer than that. I love writing these guides, tips, and opinion pieces for fans of this awesome MMO, but I felt something was missing. Even after all the terrific comments and discussions from players, there seems to be many people who haven't tried <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/runes-of-magic/"><em>RoM</em></a> yet.<br />
<br />
Seeing comments -- almost weekly -- about people saying they are going to try <em>RoM</em> is really cool. I am a huge fan of the game, and it's my intention to bring the fun and excitement of it to you, through my articles. I'm not hoping that I stop hearing about new players, because those comments are a small sign I've succeeded in my writings, but I do want to take the opportunity to present a "call to arms". <br />
<br />
<em>RoM</em> is an amazing one-of-a-kind MMO that has captured my imagination and adventure for fun. It can be all too easy to lump this game into an already complicated world of free-to-play MMOs, and dismiss it as "more of the same". It really isn't more of the same. Let's take a look at how this MMO is different, fun, steadily growing, and branching out into the MMO community. This article should catch everyone up on the current status of the game, and how it has faired in the spotlight.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/26/lost-pages-of-taborea-call-to-arms/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Lost Pages of Taborea: Call to arms!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/26/lost-pages-of-taborea-call-to-arms/">Lost Pages of Taborea: Call to arms!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 26 Jul 2010 15:00:00 EST.
