What do science jazz bands and motorized feminine hygiene products have in common? They're both mentioned on this week's MMO Report, for starters (yes, really). Moving right along, host Casey Schreiner takes a break from his industry news roundup routine to regale us with a 10-minute blooper reel featuring the best (worst?) outtakes of 2011.

The hardest thing to smuggle
Welcome to another exciting episode of The MMO Report, now with 100% more beard.

That's right, the first note on the agenda today is BioWare's announcement that same-gender romance arcs will indeed be present in Star Wars: The Old Republic. BioWare claims that the feature couldn't be implemented at launch, citing time and design constraints.

Next up on the list is DC Universe Online's imminent free-to-play transition. Players will be able to choose between playing for free and shelling out for DLC and extra character slots or subscribing to the game with the benefit of expanded character slots and free DLC.

Meanwhile, World of Warcraft's patch 4.3 is gearing up for release, and it will bring the end of an era with it. When the patch, titled Dragon Soul, goes live, players will finally be able to bring an end to Deathwing's reign of terror. And of course, with the help of the new Transmogrification system, they'll be able to look dashing while they do so.

Dragon Nest is next in line with the announcment of its official launch, and Red 5 Studios announces the inclusion of in-game pets in upcoming MMOFPS Firefall.

The MMO Report - Casey and Dave
This week's MMO Report finds host Casey Schreiner in fine form despite the disconcerting presence of another neck-bearded nerd crowding the camera during the show's opening monologue. The interloper turns out to be Schreiner's cousin Dave, who is apparently taking our intrepid host up on last week's hospitality offer.

Never fear, though -- there is some MMO news to be had during the show's eight-minute running time. City of Heroes and its upcoming free-to-play conversion gets a mention, as does the Star Wars The Old Republic trailer focused on Smugglers (who Casey says will "kick you in the nuts, tag you with a sticky grenade, and laugh in your face as you fall to your knees in agony"). There's also a blurb about Dungeons and Dragons Online's new update, RIFT's latest promotion, Minecraft's adventure pack, and of course Uncle Casey's mailbag. Check it out after the break.

Screencap -- The MMO Report
Welcome to a very special PAX Prime 2011 edition of The MMO Report. Surely you've read all of Massively's PAX coverage (you have, haven't you?), but in case you somehow missed it, don't fear. The MMO Report is here to give you the skinny on the big MMO happenings at one of the country's largest gaming conventions.

The show kicks things off with -- surprise! -- Guild Wars 2. Content Designer Mike Zadorojny talks about the new skill progression system and the removal of the energy mechanic, and also notes that closed beta is still on track to take place before the end of the year.

Then it's on to Firefall, the new MMOFPS from Red 5 Studios. The open-world portion of the game was the newest addition to the game's PAX 2011 demo, though players also had the opportunity to try their hand at the game's competitive PvP.

Funcom's The Secret World is up next with news on the game's large-scale persistent PvP. Small-scale PvP battlefields make an appearance as well in the form of Stonehenge, El Dorado, and Shambhala.

Star Wars: The Old Republic rounds out the MMO selection with the game's Huttball and Alderaan PvP battlegrounds and the Eternity Vault endgame Operation.

Casey Schreiner needs to play with his new laundry and wash his iPad -- or maybe it was the other way around -- so we must hurry through the description of this week's MMO Report! I'm not joking, he really has to leave quickly.

Casey starts with quips about a bearded dragon in the new expansion for Lord of the Rings Online, which is ironic, coming from the Master of Beards himself. Following that, our man of MMO mystery discusses the vehicles, beta, and pre-order for Star Wars: The Old Republic. This week's MMO Report is all about Casey's ego. Not one shred of MMO news bullied its way onto the show this week, unless you count a story about Battlestar Galactica Online reaching two million subscribers as news. Today on The MMO Report: World of Warcraft subscription numbers, RIFT's new advertising campaign, Star Wars: The Old Republic's (lack of) release date, Aion's latest patch, All Points Bulletin: Reloaded, and BEER WITH BEARDS! BEERDS!

Ahem. Sorry, getting ahead of myself a bit. Today's MMO Report starts by talking about Blizzard's WoW subscription numbers, specifically that they are dwindling. But it's OK -- they'll be back.

Next up, RIFT's new advertising campaign, the RIFTcast. Parodying morning news weather forecasters, the advertisements are short, clever, and effective at spreading the word.

Massively gets another shout-out for our coverage of the Star Wars: The Old Republic release window, and Casey admits a bit of surprise at TOR's adoption of a subscription model, adding that regardless of pricing, "we'd still play this game if it required half a pint of blood on startup."

Aion's patch 2.5 gets some coverage as Casey points out the improved graphics, the mentor system, new instances, and in-game events to celebrate the occasion.

And to top it off, All Points Bulletin: Reloaded is entering open beta soon.

This week on The MMO report, Casey's lead story is about the absurdly adorable Cenarion Hatchling pet now for sale on the Blizzard Store. The wee bird-deer-thing costs $10 with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Red Cross efforts in Japan, therefore making it, as Casey puts it, "good for something other than your own surreally twisted ego."

Next up is RIFT's patch 1.2, The Spoils of War. Introducing myriad new features and content, the patch is one of RIFT's largest yet.

He also gives Massively a shout-out for delivering information on the newly confirmed Marvel Universe Online. Details so far include the ability to play as iconic Marvel characters to face off against Doctor Doom with a story penned by none other than Brian Michael Bendis.

Last up is BioWare's Sith Warrior progression trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic, which compares the Sith Marauder -- described by Casey as "quick, agile, and a real bastard of a Rogue" -- and the Juggernaut, the Sith Warrior's tanking option.

Why is G4's Casey Schreiner hiding behind his notes in this week's MMO Report? Maybe it's that his insurance won't cover the liability of his stunning smile -- or that he simply forgot his contacts.

Casey jumps on top of two of the most sensationalistic stories from the past week. The first is the saga of the World of Warcraft player who made it to max level without killing anything or completing any quests. Casey salutes her by saying, "If there was a Nobel Peace Prize for pointless dedication toward arbitrary obsessive-compulsive goals, you'd be a shoo-in. Grats."

He's also intrigued about the possibility -- not probability -- of a Mass Effect MMO. "But you guys haven't still put out your first over-hyped MMO based an incredibly popular intellectual property. One disappointment at a time, gentlemen."

This week's edition of the MMO Report is completely illegal, especially when it involves Sara Underwood and Uncle Casey's Mailbag. The image still haunts my dreams. However, the actual reporting involves the addition of new content to DC Universe Online; a surprising statement from World of Warcraft creators about Star Wars: The Old Republic; someone letting the dogs out in Minecraft; and a saucy love affair between En Masse and Atari. What is the world coming to? Of course, the trip down Uncle Casey's Mail Bag wouldn't be complete without spandex and cleavage. Can't believe I just said that.

As our own Beau Hindman knows well, mobile MMOs are on the verge of taking off in a big way, and now they have the commercials to prove it.

Pocket Legends, the hit iOS and Android MMO from last year, may be the first mobile online RPG to release a nation-wide commercial. The ad, which features a high-schooler with a not-so-embarrassing secret in his pocket, will air on G4, Cartoon Network and Comedy Central, to name just a few venues.

As Pocket Legends is often described as "World of Warcraft in your hand," it's kind of ironic that developer Gameloft is also making pretty much that. Gameloft is renowned for releasing thinly disguised copies of hit games, so it stands to reason that it would take a crack at the reigning champion. The studio just released an online teaser for Order & Chaos Online on its Facebook page, and it's hard not to see the inspiration-slash-knockoff.

Turbine moved into new offices last year, giving its team spacious new digs in which to work on Dungeons and Dragons Online and Lord of the Rings Online. The last box is unpacked, and the team is ready to show off a bit.

G4TV spent some time recently with Turbine's Director of Communications Adam Mersky on a tour of the offices. Adam played host in the creative studio, showing off the various activities of the developers before moving on to the video and audio rooms.

The tour video includes some close-up footage of various works-in-progress on the developer's computer screens as well as an overall look at the several areas of the studio.

Bad puns, sexual innuendo and all the MMO news you can handle are crammed into yet another MMO Report, brought to us by our friends at G4TV. Casey Schreiner and his fabulous tie recall a few of the biggest stories from the previous week.

First up on the docket is the cancellation of two THQ titles previously in development: Company of Heroes Online and WWE Smackdown vs. Raw Online. Both of these games were an attempt by the studio to bring its western-style MMOs to a Korean market, although THQ ultimately decided that this move wasn't at the top of its priority list.

It's a short week this week on The MMO Report as Casey has some traveling to do and G4TV's writing cast of usual suspects is off doing something... perhaps hunting for Keyser Soze. Nonetheless, even with a shorter video than normal, this week's episode is jam-packed full of the interesting news, speculation, and snarkiness we've come to expect from The MMO Report.

First up, Casey takes a look at 5th Cell's upcoming Xbox Live Arcade game, Hybrid, and wonders if this console game actually might qualify as an MMO. Since nobody outside of the studio has gotten his mitts on Hybrid as yet, we'll have to wait and see. (If it is what he thinks it is, we totally agree with his ending comment.) From there, it's all eyes on Star Wars: The Old Republic as Casey talks about BioWare's flashpoint instance plans and how that will work with the different story choices available. Next up, it's a nod to our story about the recently announced zombie MMO by JetStream Studios, UnDead Online. Finally, it's the news that brings all the Guild Wars 2 fans to the yard: Guardians!

Sure, we know him for his wit and way with words -- but this week Casey Schreiner shows that he's got hotter moves than a level 85 fire mage. And of course, there's that MMO Report thing he does, in which he takes a look at the week's news. This week's targets topics include CrimeCraft's Bleedout expansion, which will offer new episodic content including goodness from artists like Ben Templesmith, Howard Chaykin, Tim Bradstreet, and many others. There's also more on Forsaken World, which is moving towards release by ramping up its teaser trailers.

Also on the radar is today's opening of Rift's closed beta, Earthrise's broken beta button and video, and of course, the first bit of EVE Online's three-part Incursion expansion. Speaking as an EVE Online player, I can say that the windowed mode is awesome, but the bit about anti-aliasing being added in this last patch is pretty awesome too. Now we capsuleers can enjoy the finest basics that Windows can offer while the Sansha swoop down on us. Finally, he wraps everything up by taking us on a magical mystery tour through Uncle Casey's Mailbag, in which we find out that sending him your cosplay pictures probably isn't the best idea -- although sending charity notes is.

This week, Casey and the rest of the crew over at G4TV have cooked up a super-sized portion of MMO gaming news goodness we can all be thankful for. He kicks things off with talk of Lord of the Rings Online's upcoming Isengard expansion, expected in Fall of 2011. From there, it's on to Forsaken World, the newest title from Perfect World Entertainment, and their video earlier this week -- oh, and he's sorry he said mean things about you before, guys. We're just passing it on.

After that, it's on to the news that has taken the world of Azeroth by storm -- literally. WIth the very hefty list of changes that came in this week's World of Warcraft patch, players are having a ball. What's even better? Well, as he points out, it's all for free. Can't beat that kind of holiday deal. After that, Casey digs into the video exclusive from ijji.com's Genesis A.D., which is offering a new nuclear silo map for up-close blow-other-people's-face-off action. Vindictus' awards at the Korean Game Awards are mentioned as well, with a hearty congrats for the sevenfold accomplishment.

Also mentioned are our move to officially being part of the Joystiq network, and Casey's ever-present mailbag of goodies. The MMO Report returns to its familiar studio digs this week, and host Casey Schreiner has a lot of ground to cover in the segment. In between shots at the Tea Party and senator-elect Rand Paul, he even manages to discuss a few MMOs. First up is the new user generated content tool in Star Trek Online, called the Foundry and currently undergoing beta testing.

BioWare's new The Old Republic Imperial Agent video also makes an appearance, along with a brief discussion of Entropia Universe's new Van Helsing monster planet. Vindictus, Nexon's upcoming free-to-play title, gained a lot of attention from the very beginning. The gritty gameplay is as far from Nexon's sugary-sweet MapleStory as you can possibly get, the opening story and look of the game are pretty good, and it's free.

Players have been enjoying the beta testing process, but as with any upcoming game, the big question has been "When?" G4TV provided that answer last night along with a brand-new (and ominous) trailer. The trailer contains both new and familiar footage, and it's gorgeous, but the exciting news is that we have exactly two weeks until launch.

Yep, Vindictus will officially launch on October 27th. The game is still in open beta for now, but if you're like most of us at Massively, the 27th is circled in red on your calendar.

It's been a busy week in the MMO news world, giving Casey Schreiner lots to cover on The MMO Report.

The advanced class system in Star Wars: The Old Republic influenced Casey's class preference by offering every smuggler player his very own Wookiee companion and new details on more specific skillsets for the class.

DC Universe Online's delay was dubbed "unsurprising," Casey gave an overview of what we know about World of Darkness, and then it was on to the big news of the week: Cataclysm's launch date. Casey had some nice Cataclysm footage and a rundown of the collector's edition as well as the cost of the different versions.

The MMO Report shakes up the formula this week as host Casey Schreiner devotes his entire show to a special look at Trion's upcoming Rift: Planes of Telara MMORPG. Featuring gameplay footage and interview snippets with producer Adam Gershowitz, the segment fills viewers in on Rift's unique backstory as well as various dynamic gameplay features including, of course, the titular planar rifts.

Gershowitz also goes into detail regarding the game's classes, including the ability to "take a variety of different classes and mix them together [using] the ascended soul system."

It's been a busy and sometimes strange week in the MMO world, and Casey Schreiner had plenty to talk about on this week's MMO Report.

Final Fantasy XIV began and APB ended in the same week, and stories surrounding those two events kicked off Casey's show. Things took a slightly stranger turn next when Casey gave an overview of the upcoming Michael Jackson virtual world and followed it immediately with DCUO's Gorilla Grodd.

First up, of course, was the tale of Bad Bobby and his EVE Online hijinks, a story that caused a huge stir in the MMO world over the weekend. SWTOR's announcement regarding Corellia got some attention, and Casey echoed the hope of many fans: since Corellia is Han Solo's future home, BioWare had better pony up a nod to the Solo name.

G4 posted a new Lord of the Rings Online F2P commercial that's sure to leave a goofy grin on your face. In it, a crowd in a modern metropolis chants "Free Middle-earth!" outside of the LotRO offices. Inside, a cute hobbit receptionist holds down the fort until the elevator dings and the Big Guy comes out -- Gandalf, rocking a bit of the old (with his trademark hat and staff) and the new (in a swanky suit).

He steps out to the crowd and delivers the words they've been longing to hear: "YOU... SHALL NOT... PAY!" Cue one staff strike and the crowd goes wild.

Warhammer 40K: Dark Millenium Online and the Imperium of Man were up first, with Casey highlighting the announcement of the game's first playable race and the new trailer. Next in line was Cataclysm and the peek at skill trees and more that Blizzard gave fans last week.

"Okay, all right, we get it. You guys wanted an update on Guild Wars 2." Casey's next story was a response to reader feedback requesting all the news from Gamescom, and he provided an overview of where things stand in the game's goals for the time being. Finally, The MMO Report wrapped up with an account of 9Dragons' switch in publishers.

Casey Schreiner and The MMO Report are settling back into their normal routine after the craziness of Comic-Con, and last night's MMO Report covered this week's round of MMO news.

Casey kicked things off in his usual entertaining style, first mentioning the upcoming Transformers MMO that most of us will not be able to play, and finishing the story with an exhortation to rise up and demand a Transformers MMO in the US... or not. Next up was a look at Star Trek Online's Season 2 and what the team has planned for the future of the game.

Four percent doesn't sound like a lot, but when it comes to Sony Online Entertainment, it represents nearly three dozen employees who no longer have a job. G4 reports that the company has let 35 people go from its full-time workforce in an effort to "better align the company's resources against areas of growth that meet consumer demand in today's online market as well as improve operational efficiency."

The company is being tight-lipped as to the specifics of the cuts, including who was let go and from which development teams. This may come as a surprise to some, especially when you consider that SOE is riding high off of its Free Realms mega-success and is poised to launch several new titles including The Agency, DC Universe Online and Clone Wars Adventures. Hopefully we'll hear more details soon, but in the meantime you can read the full announcement over at G4.

Casey Schrenier's back on The MMO Report and he's got plenty of lost time to make up for.

He chatted about the upcoming Vindictus closed beta and its unusually detailed application process, and APB's unwillingness to leap into he console market right off the bat. The newest TERA video got some attention thanks to the game's new combat system. The unique design is gaining attention from other developers as well.

The new City of Heroes video documentary rounded out the report before Casey moved on to the long-neglected "WTF Second Life" segment -- which actually took a positive note thanks to the Second Life Science Fiction Convention. Uncle Casey's Mailbag rounded out the evening with promises of a beard contest at PAX 2011. We can only hope that comes to pass.

This week's MMO Report takes us back to last week's E3 at the Los Angeles convention center, and the show is so packed with content that Casey Schreiner and crew couldn't manage to fit it all into one episode. As a result, you can check out part one this week and wait with baited breath for part two next Thursday.

Speaking of content, Schreiner kicks things off by interviewing Nexon's Eun-Seok Lee and Min Kim about the forthcoming action title Vindictus. Lee talks about the game's non-traditional approach to classes as well as the free-to-play business model. "That's all we do, that's all we know how to do, we kind of invented free to play back in 2000," he says.

Chris Sherland, executive producer on LEGO Universe, is also interviewed on the show, and discusses the creativity inherent in the upcoming title. "We've taken the build metaphor across a number of different levels. If anybody's played the [LEGO] Batman games or the Star Wars games, it's very familiar [to] that early build experience where you're creating something in the world that's pre-determined, but you get that feedback that you've built something. We've that taken that to another level," Sherland says.

Finally, Star Wars The Old Republic writer Daniel Erickson discusses BioWare's decision to avoid demos and simply put the game in the hands of convention-goers, as well as specifics on the game's classes. He also touches on the much-discussed "Hope" trailer, which Casey accurately describes as "better than all three prequels combined."

This week's MMO Report, after kicking of with a shiny new intro, jumps right into the news -- it was a big week.

The top story was all about ArenaNet's plans for the convention circuit over the next few months, followed by a peek at the Octavius faction trailer for Jumpgate Evolution. Next up was the news of Lord of the Rings Online's upcoming switch to free-to-play as well as DCUO's release window and newest video.

The MMO Report will be departing from its regular schedule over the next few weeks. Next week will be a special show covering World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, and then there will be a few weeks of E3 coverage. Last week was a busy one in the MMO news world, and Casey Schreiner had his work cut out for him in this week's MMO Report.

First on the list was the story of the Dhuum-scythe-bannings in Guild Wars, which Casey rightly called in-game entertainment for those of us who didn't earn a ban. Next up? Bioware's new trailer for SWTOR -- enjoy the Sith puns, we did. Casey then took us back to Tyria for a look at the "pretty darn awesome" revelation regarding Guild Wars 2 personal story.

Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, the kid-style MMO from SOE, was next on the list along with a look at the upcoming Need For Speed World. As always, the news was followed by Uncle Casey's Mailbag and a special surprise -- an internet hug. Casey Schreiner's back with The MMO Report this week, and he had plenty of exciting MMO news to cover.

Kicking off the report was Guild Wars 2, since ArenaNet provided enough news last week to fill nearly an entire MMO Report by itself, but more news was waiting in the wings. So with a quick recap and a warning not to drool on our keyboards, it was on to Rise of the Godslayer. Age of Conan's first expansion now has a launch date and the release of a new trailer. Up next, World of Warcraft news was wrapped up in a neat little package entitled "Wow We" which included a fun addition to the refer-a-friend program, a WoW movie, and WoW on the iPad.

Finally, the City of Heroes newest content update and graphics upgrade got a look, as did the announcement of APB's launch date and unique pricing structure.

It's Thursday night, which means Uncle Casey and his mailbag are back to review this week in The MMO Report. Casey Schreiner gave us a rundown of all the latest and greatest MMO news.

The rundown began with all of Trion's big news from earlier this week, including the newest look at Rift: Planes of Telara, End of Nations, and MMO that ties in with SyFy's One Earth. Star Trek Online's Season One -- the latest batch of content centering around DS9 -- got a look in, as did LotRO's birthday celebration. BioWare's new SW:TOR dev diary earned a "holy crap" from Mr. Schreiner (we agree), and then it was off to the mailbag after a quick stop by the WoW store to check out the newest goodies.

If you've been following along with our coverage of Star Wars: The Old Republic you'll know that BioWare has placed incredible emphasis on writing for SWTOR. As the game is fully voiced, the complete script is roughly 40 novels in length. G4tv's The Feed has a GamesCom 2009 video interview with SWTOR Lead Writer Daniel Erickson that explains more about what a huge undertaking the game has been from a writing perspective.

Erickson explains that BioWare's challenges aren't necessarily about having the ability to pull this off, it's more a matter of scale, particularly with the French and German localizations. He tells G4, "We think we've got the biggest voice over project in entertainment history."

There are so many massively multiplayer online titles on the horizon that it would be hard to pick a staff favorite among the Massively writers, but one game that consistently draws 'oohs' and 'aahs' from us is Free Realms from Sony Online Entertainment. We're not alone in wanting to know more about the game. Adam Sessler from G4's X-Play recently got some screen time with Free Realms associate art director Sebastian Strzalkowski.

Strzalkowski walks the viewer through character creation, which is done via the Free Realms website before the game itself actually launches. As the interview progresses, he mentions that a storyline runs through the game's quests, but players aren't locked into following along with it. A wide variety of mini-games will be on offer, as the accompanying footage shows off. SOE's hope is that the mix of various types of activities in the game (plus pets and social networking) will hold appeal for its younger target audience as well as the parents of those gamers. When you think of the sheer amount of work that a development team puts into an MMO, it's no wonder that we're talking about years of effort needed to produce a solid title. Now, imagine what it would take for one person to do it all on his own, while incorporating innovative concepts into the gameplay. That's exactly what Eskil Steenberg is doing. He's the one man army behind Love, an in-development MMO that boasts a unique art style, and is heavily geared towards gamers who enjoy exploration and world building.

G4TV's X-Play has an excellent video preview of Love, which explains the basic concepts of the game. It gives us a look at the environments and hints at the world shaping possibilities that players will be able to harness. Each of Love's worlds (which should support up to 200 players) is distinct from others, being in a near-constant state of flux. There's still no word on when Love will be released, but you can be certain we'll be keeping an eye on this title.
