MV Guide is a weekly rundown of the MMO gaming events planned on Massively's Livestream channel.

Every week, the Massively staff logs in to play various MMOs live and in person, and we'd love for you to drop by the channel and visit. We have a combination of regular weekly games and new surprises, so you'll find a variety of games to take a look at. During Livestream events, you can participate in the live chat to learn about the game, ask questions, and spend some time with Massively staff and readers. (Of course, Livestream events are subject to the whims of outside forces like server-side gremlins once in a while.)

Free for All: Why I play free-to-play

I hid in waiting under a soggy sheet of cardboard for the past three days with stale Cheetos as my only nourishment. I had but a single target, who finally exited his house with bleached skin, a red fuzzy head and blurry eyes. As he stood at his front door trying to shoo away the sun like a vampire, I made my move. At last, I thought, Beau's spirit hood will be mine.

By the time I was well into a Keanu Reeves-style flying scissor-kick, I realized an important tactical error. It wasn't the horror-filled eyes of a man who had spent too much time indoors staring at a computer screen that I was looking into, but the fierce come-get-some eyes of a teenager with spiky, dyed hair who was practicing his karate moves.

Had I thought beyond simply looking cool as I made my attack, I would have realized I spent every ounce of energy I had to pull off the insane leap-kick that actually looked more like what you'd expect: a tired, wet, dirty, malnourished geek hop-skipping and shouting gibberish through a yard with a piece of cardboard stuck to his back. The three-day diet of stale Cheetos did not give me enough fuel to defend myself from the brutal pummeling that the pint-sized Bruce Lee gave me.

It turns out Beau lived in the house next door. He had seen my wild display and subsequent beating, so he came out to help me. He invited me into his house to let me clean myself up, extolled the dangers of trying to live out movie fantasies, and offered to let me write his column for a week. It wasn't a spirit hood, but it was a very nice gesture. The dog-shaped cookies were a nice gift too, although I don't know why he snickered every time I ate one.

No. The above tale really didn't happen, but Beau is letting me write his column today so I can tell you why I love to play free-to-play MMOs.

As Massively readers everywhere recover from the second-greatest candy holiday of the year, many MMOs have also enticed players with virtual sweetness. Easter may not be the most popular of in-game holidays, but there's something very MMO-ish with "collecting" eggs and hunting down giant, man-eating rabbits wherever they trod. Even future MMOs like TERA are eager to get their own virtual bunny event up and running.

Final Fantasy XI: An Egg-hunter Is Hatched
"Initial eggs" are eggs of avian persuasion that have been inscribed with a single letter of the alphabet. During the Egg Hunt, adventurers can receive a random initial egg from the festival moogles once every Vana'dielian day. Collecting and forming certain combinations of initial eggs will garner you event egg-sclusive prizes.

World of Warcraft: Noblegarden 2010
Noblegarden will run this year from Sunday, April 4 (this Sunday) through Sunday, April 11. If you've never done Noblegarden before or only done its fairly low-key, pre-2009 version, it helps to know that Noble Gardener (the holiday's meta) is part of the year-long What A Long, Strange Trip It's Been achievement that rewards the 310% speed Violet Proto-Drake.

Florensia invites players to Hanami like there's no tomorrow

Do you Hanami? If not -- all the cool kids are doing it, why aren't you? For those of you in the audience going "Han-whadda?", Hanami is a Japanese custom of cherry blossom viewing. Every year, during a very brief period, cherry blossom trees bloom across the nation, and people turn out in scads to look at them and go "ooh" and "aah."

In the sea-themed MMO Florensia, the devs are inviting everyone to participate in Hanami and Easter with their special in-game event. As players enjoy the cherry blossom trees, they're encouraged to collect as many Cherry Blossoms as possible, along with rare Dodo Eggs from these odd birds. These items can be traded in for a bevy of outfits and pets, including fluffy Rabbit Ears, Cherry Blossom Coronets, Mini-Dodos and fuzzy Fox Hats. Another perk of this special holiday is an impressive 50% bump to party XP until the event ends.

The Easter and Hanami event in Florensia is going on now through April 6, so snag all of the blossoms and eggs that you can before time runs out! You can check this maritime MMO out here.

Cute and scary glimpses from Florensia Online

Check out the above glimpse from Florensia Online's vast dungeons, dark secrets, horrifying monsters, sinister nightmares, and infernal bosses. Oh no, what will you do? Combine efforts and lead your band of cute and merry anime-inspired adventurers to victory of course! If you want to dare the impossible join the open beta that is underway.

In all seriousness, the Japanese import is free-to-play and will sustain development from a micro transaction "itemshop" model. Florensia does feature a somewhat unique leveling twist. The dual battle system gives players the freedom to choose if they want to level at land or at sea, as well as the ability to specialize in both areas of combat. The sea system is more difficult to master, but the catch is that sea based gameplay is unavoidable if you want to visit other islands. There's a new dungeon preview on the official website along with other news updates. If you thought the trailer was a bit cheesy and left you lingering for something like some ship action, there are several other official clips available.

Florensia Online enters open beta

Pirate-themed, anime-inspired Japanese import Florensia Online has just entered "Western Global" open beta. Another Asian import MMO? Well, yes, but this does have some nice bits. Florensia is actually two games in one, a sea-faring game and a land-based adventure. You build experience in each separately -- so you can play the game entirely on the land or on the sea, or a combination. You can build your own ships from five basic hulls with dozens of add-ons to make your ship truly individual. There's five classes to start with, and soon there will be twelve, including extended classes. Sieges and faction wars are on the horizon.

Florensia: A game of pirates and magic

Call it "Pirates of the Sea of Blue-Haired Girls", call it what you will, the latest Asian import MMO to touch our shores is the unique Florensia, which burda:ic will publishing for Western eyes sometime soon. Captain a ship, explore hidden mysteries, use magic, fight pirates, perform quests all across the world. Build your own ship, customize your character to look just the way you want. If you took Pirates of the Burning Sea, sped up the game play (especially sea battles -- watch the video below -- changed the style from realistic to cartoonish, added magic and removed the subscription price, you'd have Florensia.

Florensia has just ended its closed beta test and will be going into open beta test sometime in July. Defend your city from peril from the sea and the land, join in massive sea battles -- what's not to like? The system requirements are so low that you could practically run this game on an abacus. It's definitely worth a look, so expect to hear more of Florensia in the coming weeks.
