The bad news continues to accumulate for Rhode Island developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a>. According to Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee, the company has received a grand total of <a href="http://news.providencejournal.com/breaking-news/2012/05/chafee-no-outsi.html">no outside investment</a>. It also has not received any of the tax credits that it requested, leaving the studio still deep in the hole. Chafee has stated that he is doing everything in his power to prevent the studio's closure.<br />
<br />
Staff members are also <a href="http://blogs.wpri.com/2012/05/23/38-studios-loses-ceo-and-high-profile-vp-linkedin-suggests/">leaving the company at an alarming rate</a>, with CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jen-MacLean/">Jen MacLean</a> and senior VP of product development <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/John-Blakely/">John Blakely</a> both confirming their departures from the company. The hiring of both individuals was trumpeted as a mark of success as recently as March of this year, and Blakely was still employed by 38 Studios as recently as Monday evening. There's even talk of the company's health insurance running out. None of this news suggests that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a>'s company will make a quick turnaround -- if indeed it makes a turnaround at all.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/38-studios-appears-to-be-getting-no-new-help/">38 Studios appears to be getting no new help</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 May 2012 20:00:00 EST. It is not every day that a U.S. governor is the one to announce the launch window for an MMO, so savor the weirdness while you can: Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/rhode-island-governor-gives-38-studios-copernicus-mmo-a-june-20/">announced at a press conference</a> that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios</a> will be releasing code-name <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/project-copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a> next summer. "What I understand is Copernicus is June of '13," Chafee said. He also stated that he thought the financial deal was a "risky enterprise" from the start.<br />
<br />
38 Studios Founder and Chairman Curt Schilling <a href="http://bostonglobe.com/business/2012/05/18/facebook-curt-schilling-denies-paid-himself-back-with-money-thanks-supporters-ailing-studios-video-game-company/EnqdY2flmq0Bf55m4YvdRM/story.html">said on Facebook</a> that rumors of his using the state funds to repay his personal investment in the company was "not true." In a separate post, Schilling attempted to set an optimistic tone: "We will find a way, and the strength, to endure."<br />
<br />
We have been following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/rumor-38-studios-may-be-having-financial-trouble/">the financial turmoil</a> that 38 Studios is in following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/if-38-studios-goes-under-rhode-island-taxpayers-will-be-footing/">its default on paying back Rhode Island</a> for its $75 million loan. The studio and state <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/no-relief-in-sight-for-38-studios-after-emergency-meeting/">are looking for options</a>, but in the meanwhile, 38 Studios has been struggling to make payments <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/38-studios-paying-state-back-by-not-paying-employees/">by holding back employee paychecks</a> and seeking additional capital from private investors.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/38-studios-project-copernicus-to-release-in-june-2013-says-ri/">38 Studios' Project Copernicus to release in June 2013, says RI governor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 18 May 2012 14:30:00 EST. If you're familiar with the phrase "robbing Peter to pay Paul," you'll understand the latest episode in the ongoing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a> financial crisis. Except replace "Paul" with "the state of Rhode Island" and "Peter" with "<a href="http://www.wpri.com/dpp/news/politics/local_politics/38-studios-pays-edc-not-employees">the company's employees</a>." Yes, in order to make the most recent payment to the state that sparked this whole crisis, the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation has been informed that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a>'s company is paying the state but not paying any of the company's employees. According to anonymous sources, all temporary employees and contractors have also been terminated.<br />
<br />
While <a href="http://www.wpri.com/dpp/news/politics/local_politics/38-studios-pays-edc-not-employees">this measure</a> might help forestall immediate action, the company is still on the hook for a $75 million loan, and Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee has made it clear that the company is looking for more assistance from the state in order to remain viable. 38 Studios continues to make no public statements at this time. We'll no doubt have more on this story in the coming days as it continues to develop.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/38-studios-paying-state-back-by-not-paying-employees/">38 Studios paying state back by not paying employees</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/no-relief-in-sight-for-38-studios-after-emergency-meeting/"><img alt="Gov Lincoln" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/lincoln-1337910992.jpg" /></a></div>
Generally, when your company defaults on a major loan, you might expect an emergency meeting about the loan and the company's future would produce some results. But apparently today's meeting between <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a> owner <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a> and Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee resulted in... absolutely nothing. Specifically, Rhode Island's Economic Development Corporation <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/38-studios-schilling-ask-rhode-island-for-more-money-state-off/">will take no immediate action to prevent the studio from going under</a>, with Chafee on record as asking, "How do we avoid throwing good money after bad?"<br />
<br />
It's a loaded question if you consider that the failure of 38 Studios would put the state's taxpayers on the hook for more than $112 million. Schilling has declined to elaborate on the company's state in interviews, and he has not made public how much more funding the company is seeking. It's bad news for the studio, bad news for the state, and bad news for any fans still looking forward to the possibility of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a></em> in the future.<br />
<br />
<strong>[Update: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/rhode-island-owns-38-studios-intellectual-property/">Joystiq reports</a> that "it appears 38 Studios put up all present and future IP by the company as collateral," meaning that if the studio defaults, the state of Rhode Island will own all of its game assets. We've tucked some of the ensuing news coverage in the video behind the break.]</strong><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/no-relief-in-sight-for-38-studios-after-emergency-meeting/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>No relief in sight for 38 Studios after emergency meeting [Updated]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/no-relief-in-sight-for-38-studios-after-emergency-meeting/">No relief in sight for 38 Studios after emergency meeting [Updated]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 16 May 2012 15:30:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/project-copernicus"><em>Project Copernicus </em></a>and<em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/kingdoms-of-amalur-reckoning">Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</a></em> developer <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a> is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/rhode-island-gov-working-hard-at-keeping-38-studios-solvent/">in some hot water</a>, but it looks like that may be the least of your worries if you're a Rhode Island resident. Rhode Island's WPRI reports that if the studio founders and can't pay back the bonds given to it by the state, then the onus of doing so will fall upon Rhode Island taxpayers.<br />
	<br />
	How much moolah are we talking about? Something to the tune of $112.6 million US. According to Joystiq, "If 38 Studios can't pay, the governor is required to ask the General Assembly to repay bondholders," which means that Rhode Island taxpayers will be responsible for footing the bill by 2020. For now, though, both the studio and the Rhode Island government are tight-lipped on the studio's future, and by association, the future of <em>Project Copernicus</em>, so we'll just have to wait and see how this plays out.<br />

	<a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/electronic-arts">Electronic Arts'</a> stock appears to be in a bit of trouble following <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic">Star Wars: The Old Republic's</a></em> launch. The company's shares fell by almost 3% to $17.75 US this morning after a stock analyst working with Brean Murray Carret &amp; Co. "cut his price target on the stock to $22 [US] from $28 [US]." In a note to his clients, analyst Todd Mitchell wrote that he felt some "creeping concerns" regarding <em>The Old Republic's</em> performance so far; he added that "initial sales appear to be below expectations, and casual observation of early play is causing us to rethink our <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Churn_rate">churn</a> assumptions." Now we just get to sit back with some popcorn and see whether BioWare can get its business together in time to make a recovery, so take a seat.<br />

<div>
	A recent SEC filing from <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/zynga">Zynga</a>, creator of the social gaming epidemic known as <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/farmville"><em>FarmVille</em></a>, revealed that the company is reporting a record quarterly revenue of over 306 million USD, though -- bizarrely enough -- profits are almost 54 percent lower than they were this time last year.<br />
	<br />
	Revenue isn't the only thing that's on the rise, either. The company reports 152 million unique monthly players, compared to the 151 million the company reported in June. The average number of daily players, however, dropped from 59 million to 54 million. At any rate, the company seems to be going strong, with new titles such as the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/11/zyngas-castleville-hopes-to-enter-mmo-territory">recently announced (supposed MMO) <em>CastleVille</em></a> just on the horizon.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/04/zynga-reports-record-revenue-in-last-quarter/">Zynga reports record revenue in last quarter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 04 Nov 2011 17:00:00 EST. With all the layoffs that seem to be going around the MMO industry as of late, it's about time we hear some good news from a developer. <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/changyou">ChangYou</a>, known in North America primarily for its quirky title <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/zentia"><em>Zentia</em></a> and the bizarrely named <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/duke-of-mount-deer"><em>Duke of Mount Deer</em></a>, reports a 119 million USD revenue for its third fiscal quarter.<br />
	<br />
	The company's amount of registered users rose as well, with the company citing 159 million current gamers inhabiting ChangYou's titles. CEO <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/tao-wang">Tao Wang</a> is understandably pleased with these results and says that "we believe these results once again demonstrate our ability to understand and fulfill gamers' needs and showcase our content development and game operation strengths." It's been a great year for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/changyou">ChangYou</a>, and the Chinese developer responsible for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tian-long-ba-bu"><em>Tian Long Ba Bu</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/duke-of-mount-deer"><em>Duke of Mount Deer</em></a> recently reported its fifth consecutive double digit growth quarter.<br />
<br />
<em>Tian Long Ba Bu</em> has seen two successful expansion packs thus far in 2011, with a third scheduled for September. According to Gamasutra, <em>Duke of Mount Deer</em> recently increased its server headcount to 110 (up from 64), and the success of both titles powered ChangYou's $54.2 million profit as well as a 35.1 percent revenue jump over the previous year.<br />
<br />
ChangYou also <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/25/zentia-developer-changyou-spends-68-million-on-a-browser-game-c/">bought into a browser-game specialist</a> called <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/7road">7Road</a> last spring with the intention of expanding its interests beyond traditional MMORPGs. All told, Gamasutra says that ChangYou contributed an impressive $327 million in revenue to a $5 billion Chinese game market.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/02/changyou-reports-impressive-profit-and-revenue-gains/">ChangYou reports impressive profit and revenue gains</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 02 Aug 2011 10:00:00 EST. According to news site <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com">Gamasutra</a>, US MMO giant <a href="http://massively.com/tag/turbine">Turbine</a> <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=24781">have secured</a> $6.6m worth of investment in a drive where they aim to get $50m in venture capital. Turbine are synonymous with the paid-going-free-to-play title <a href="http://www.ddo.com/"><em>Dungeons and Dragons Online</em></a> as well as the ever popular <a href="http://www.lotro.com/"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>. They are also an independent company, which is where the investment side of things comes in, as in order to run the games they need the financial backing of other companies to survive. Given they are not a giant company like <a href="http://blizzard.com">Blizzard Entertainment</a>, it's an interesting glimpse into how the MMO industry can work. <br /><br />The info comes by way of an eleven page Form D (which you can read <a href="http://www.10kwizard.com/cgi/convert/pdf/TurbineIncD-20090810.pdf?crl=6a63722f31736558684d69544e49526c58416978646377517366742f505762614873554e556849477365453d&amp;cik=1319743&amp;fndateext=1&amp;ipage=6458273&amp;rid=12&amp;xml=1&amp;pdf=1&amp;quest=1&amp;dn=1">here</a>) filed to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on August 10th. The document outlines info on the company, its director, their investors who include Highland Capital Partners, Tudor Ventures, Columbia Capital, and Granite Global Ventures and the amount of money involved. While the document is quite dry and filled with boring facts, it's good to know big businesses are acknowledging the roles MMOs have and how this is affected by their increasing mainstream popularity.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/12/turbine-hits-6-6m-in-50m-funding-drive/">Turbine hits $6.6m in $50m funding drive</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 12 Aug 2009 10:00:00 EST. The UGC, which sells alongside other gift cards on store shelves, has a special code redeemable online at the company's website that can be applied toward over 200 online games. The games supported range from triple-A MMOGs to casual, browser-based games. <br /><br />PlaySpan's research notes that nearly 50 percent of their customers are age 14-18, and they likely purchase the cards because they're too young to have credit cards of their own. This player-elected <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/council-of-stellar-management">Council of Stellar Management</a> works with the sci-fi title's developer, CCP Games, to ensure that the game design and balancing of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> reflects the interests of the subscribers. Player politics related to a divisive community of gamers can be complicated, however. <br /><br />Since its inception, the <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/What_is_the_CSM">Council of Stellar Management</a> has faced intense criticism and no small amount of skepticism about how effective they will ultimately be. In other words -- <em>EVE</em>'s Council of Stellar Management is a fairly accurate simulation of how the public reacts to real-world governance. Still, some of the original CSM delegates chose to stick it out and seek re-election for a second term. One of those delegates, now in his second term in office, is LaVista Vista. He's well-known to the <em>EVE</em> community for his level-headed approach to balancing the game and his experience with the different 'walks of life' of <em>EVE</em>'s playstyles. <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=900554">These qualities make him an ideal representative</a> of the interests of the players themselves and it came as little surprise that he was re-elected. <br /><br />Massively recently caught up with LaVista Vista, who was happy to discuss some of his experiences as a dedicated <em>EVE</em> player as well as a Council of Stellar Management representative.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/eve-community-spotlight-lavista-vista/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Community Spotlight: LaVista Vista</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/eve-community-spotlight-lavista-vista/">EVE Community Spotlight: LaVista Vista</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 03 Mar 2009 16:00:00 EST. The troubles of some companies are still coming to light, as is the case with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom</a>. James Lee from <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz">GamesIndustry.biz</a> writes that <a href="http://www.funcom.com">Funcom</a> has reported its Q4 2008 financial results with <em>"an operating loss of USD 23.3 million, caused by a depreciation of USD 22.8 million due to the lagging performance of <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com">Age of Conan</a>." </em><br /><br />In addition, <a href="http://www.funcom.com/wsp/funcom/frontend.cgi?func=publish.show&amp;func_id=1334&amp;table=CONTENT">Funcom CFO Olav Sandes has given notice of his resignation</a>. Sandes is not the first <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gaute-godager">high level employee to quit in recent months</a>, but all is not doom and gloom. Funcom's Q4 2008 subscription revenues from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-conan"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> have shot up to USD 8.7 million, <a href="http://www.funcom.com/wsp/funcom/frontend.cgi?func=publish.show&amp;func_id=1335&amp;table=CONTENT">up from USD 1.2 million year-on-year</a>, Lee reports. Funcom expects a Q1 2009 revenue of between USD 6 million and 8 million, largely comprised of subscription fees for <em>Age of Conan</em>. <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/funcom-reports-q4-USD23-3m-loss">James Lee's GamesIndustry.biz article</a> has further details on Funcom's financial situation.<hr />

What's interesting is that although such initiatives aren't developer-supported, players still put together banks, IPOs, and other types of investments peripherally to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> and its game mechanics. The sandbox nature of the game paired with <em>EVE's</em> API allow for ventures of this sort. <a href="http://bank.dyco-eve.com/index.php">Dynasty Banking</a> is one choice that players have that's <a href="http://www.eve-mag.com/archives/864">been turning heads of late</a>, but <a href="http://www.eve-bank.net/">EBANK</a> is the focus of a recent <a href="http://www.eve-tribune.com">EVE-Tribune</a> piece. EBANK has accrued over one trillion ISK and over 2750 customers, making it -- according to their <a href="http://www.eve-bank.net/EBANKAnnualReport07-08.pdf">2007-2008 annual report</a> -- <em>"the largest financial entity ever seen in EVE." </em><br /><br />EVE Tribune had a chance to interview EBANK's LaVista Vista (real name: Charlie Eriksen), who is also a newly re-elected delegate of <em>EVE's</em> player representative body, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/council-of-stellar-management ">Council of Stellar Management</a>. The EVE Tribune piece written by FinnAgain kicks off with one hell of a caveat in the form of a direct quote from one of their staff writers, but it's a good way to begin, particularly given the problems that have been seen in the past with banks in <em>EVE Online</em>. The interview focuses on the policies and safeguards in place to keep any individual working at EBANK from absconding with vast amounts of player-invested ISK, but LaVista Vista also discusses how EBANK puts all that isk to use, and their future plans to establish a stock exchange. If you're interested in the economic side of an MMO, the <a href="http://www.eve-tribune.com/index.php?no=3_47&amp;page=1">EBANK interview at EVE Tribune</a> is a good look at what players can accomplish on their own within a virtual economy.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/26/a-look-at-virtual-banking-in-eve-online/">A look at virtual banking in EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 26 Nov 2008 19:00:00 EST. While the preferred game mechanics of your average Korean MMO, for instance, differ markedly from what a North American MMO gamer expects from a title, the broader ideas -- in terms of business models -- represent what may yet be for those of us in North America, Europe, and Australia. So when industry leaders <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/13/ncsoft-third-quarter-profits-sliced-in-half/">aren't doing well in their primary market,</a> it may not bode well for their smaller titles running in other regions of the world.<br /><br />We've come across an interesting piece in <a href="http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/index.asp">The Korea Times</a> about some sea changes in Korea's MMO industry, focusing on <a href="http://www.plaync.com"></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsof</a>t as well as its competitors -- <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/nexon">Nexon</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/webzen ">Webzen</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hanbitsoft ">Hanbitsoft</a>. We've previously reported that the <a href="http://www.aiononline.com/us/"><em>Aion: The Tower of Eternity</em></a> beta has, thus far, been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/14/aion-tower-of-eternity-breaks-all-beta-test-records-in-korea/ ">quite a success in Korea</a> and is perhaps a ray of hope for <a href="http://www.plaync.com/">NCsoft</a> in some troubled times. NCsoft's fiscal health is a big issue for fans of <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">City of Heroes</span></a>, <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Guild Wars</span></a>, <a href="http://www.rgtr.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Tabula Rasa</span>,</a> and <a href="http://www.lineage2.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Lineage II</span></a>, among others. So it comes as good news that NCsoft has nearly <a href="http://www.aionsource.com/forum/news-announcements/9317-translation-aion-races-200k-concurrent-users.html ">200,000 concurrent users</a> playing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><span style="font-style: italic;">Aion: The Tower of Eternity</span></a> in beta. For some players, <em>EVE's</em> economics is where they immerse themselves. Indeed, in some cases it's even where they PvP with their rivals in price wars and market manipulations. To them, the market is where they live and breathe, just as much as lowsec is the ideal environment for many pirates, and lawless 0.0 space is where players interested in large-scale alliance warfare feel at home. <br /><br />While <em>EVE</em> doesn't officially support a stock market or banking institutions, the sandbox approach <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> took to the game has allowed players to establish their own financial ventures in-game. However, without safeguards put in place by <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">CCP Games</span></a>, and with New Eden being a place where players can act as they wish, there's always <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=381340">the risk of embezzlement</a> in any large-scale, player-driven financial institution. While it doesn't happen as often as most assume, there have been incidents like the <a href="http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-1993624284569945666">EVE Intergalactic Bank (EIB) scam</a> that have <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/trust">eroded investor confidence</a> in such ventures. Fortunately, not all players are daunted by this, both in terms of those with a vision to establish a financial venture and the investors they rely upon. One such visionary in New Eden is "Ricdic", Founder and Managing Director of <a href="http://www.eve-bank.net">EBANK</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/07/establishing-trust-in-eves-player-run-financial-institutions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Establishing trust in EVE's player-run financial institutions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/07/establishing-trust-in-eves-player-run-financial-institutions/">Establishing trust in EVE's player-run financial institutions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 07 Nov 2008 09:00:00 EST. For those who like how busy the official forums are, but not the rules that govern it, there's <a href="http://www.scrapheap-challenge.com/">Scrapheap Challenge</a>. SH-C is a forum which is chiefly dedicated to discussing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, but not moderated by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> themselves. Recent months, however, have seen a large number of <em>EVE</em> players striking out on their own, with their own blogs that focus on a particular aspect of the game linked to that blogger's playstyle. Industry, finance, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/piracy">piracy</a>, 0.0 alliance warfare, and now even <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/boosters">boosters</a> (drugs) are being written about on a daily basis.<br /><br />While over 100 of these blogs are out there, the more prolific among them have joined under the banner of CrazyKinux's <a href="http://www.crazykinux.com/2008/06/eve-online-blog-pack.html">Blog Pack</a>. By all accounts, it's been a successful community effort by <em>EVE</em> players, and now CrazyKinux is adding another dimension to the Blog Pack: conversation topics that are collectively tackled by the various bloggers, called "Blog Banter." The <a href="http://www.crazykinux.com/2008/10/eve-blog-banter-1-exotic-dancers.html">first Blog Banter got underway</a> this past week, and the first issue up for discussion has been a timely one: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/walking-in-stations"><em>EVE's</em> <em>Walking in Stations</em> expansion</a>, formerly known as <em>Ambulation</em>, which <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/fanfest/2008/ ">Fanfest attendees</a> will get to try out firsthand in just a few more days. The question itself was <a href="http://psychediver.blogspot.com/">proposed by PsycheDiver</a>, who asked, <em>"Ambulation: What are your hopes for your avatar and new functionality of stations?"</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/02/eve-blog-banter-discusses-walking-in-stations-expansion/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE 'Blog Banter' discusses Walking in Stations expansion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/02/eve-blog-banter-discusses-walking-in-stations-expansion/">EVE 'Blog Banter' discusses Walking in Stations expansion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 02 Nov 2008 16:10:00 EST. It's not surprising, as those topics are often the ones most interesting to players and non-players alike, but <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> has a very deep industrial side to it as well. It's a side that gets much less fanfare; R&amp;D (invention), manufacturing, trading, and investment are all possible within the game and occur in tandem with <em>EVE's</em> more violent pursuits. Most every ship, after all, has been manufactured and sold (or re-sold) by another player. Those who engage in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/industry"><em>EVE's</em> industry</a> on a serious level often come into conflict with rival corporations and alliances in wars played out on the market, which sometimes spill into formal war declarations and combat. But if you're not interested in or inept at PvP, what are <em>EVE's</em> industrialists to do? <br /><br />While an industrialist may not be well-versed in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/20/eve-and-sun-tzus-the-art-of-war/">the art of war</a>, he or she can play to their own strength: financial influence. <em>EVE</em> has a number of merc corps who are willing to solve problems, be it through armed escorts in hostile space or simply obliterating your opposition... assuming you can meet their price. Benilopax, of <a href="http://www.warpdriveactive.com/category/industry-podcast/">Warp Drive Active: Industry podcast</a> fame and <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/eon/">an E-ON contributor</a>, relates his experience with contracting mercenaries to solve such problems, in what he refers to as 'the dark side of industrialism'. <em>"There is a growing use of mercenaries by industrial entities to either take out the competition or keep them from easily making a profit,"</em> Benilopax writes for <a href="http://www.eve-tribune.com">EVE Tribune</a>. If you're interested in knowing a bit more about this side of the game, <a href="http://www.eve-tribune.com/index.php?no=3_43&amp;page=1">start with Benilopax's article</a> (and A-Team reference) to see what it's like to deal with mercenaries in <em>EVE Online</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/30/mercs-and-their-role-in-eves-industrial-warfare/">Mercs and their role in EVE's industrial warfare</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 30 Oct 2008 15:00:00 EST. Piracy, large-scale alliance warfare, and in general the dark side of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> are what most players find interesting. But still, there are many players who engage in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/24/the-daily-grind-cutting-the-combat/">non-violent gameplay</a> and find it rewarding. While hardcore PvP-ers lambast them as carebears, some corporations and individuals have attained considerable wealth and influence in the game through their own form of PvP applied to finance -- market warfare. <br /><br />Among the player-created corporations and alliances in <em>EVE Online</em> that are devoted to helping newer players attain their goals in an often complex system, <a href="http://www.eve-ivy.com/">EVE University</a> and <a href="http://www.agony-unleashed.com/news.php">Agony Unleashed</a> are the most prominent. However, there are other corporations in the game that help their members along the way, which are more focused in their pursuits. One such corporation is <a href="http://traderslounge.novitraq.com/">Trader's Academy,</a> corp ticker: [TRACE], formed in 2005 and devoted to helping pilots maximize profits from trading, mining, and mission running.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/03/a-traders-mindset-in-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A trader's mindset in EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/03/a-traders-mindset-in-eve-online/">A trader's mindset in EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 03 Oct 2008 10:00:00 EST. <p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Funcom/">Funcom</a>, makers of <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a>, are dealing with some serious financial flux. Since the launch of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-conan/"><em>AoC</em></a>, their stock has tumbled from $54 to $24 a share on the Oslo Stock Exchange (last price as of the end of the trading day on Friday). This represents the loss of over 55% of the stock value. With little news coming from the world of high finance on the subject, it seems that investors may be jumping ship from the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/30/age-of-conan-surpasses-700k-registered-users/">gaming industry starlet</a>.<br /></p>
<p>Much speculation continues to be made regarding the true status of <em>Age of Conan</em> and its success or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/is-age-of-conan-a-rousing-success-or-a-stinking-failure/">failure</a>, with references to the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/17/age-of-conan-is-it-a-fun-mess-or-just-a-mess/">bugs</a> of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/20/age-of-conan-the-siege-warfare-is-a-buggy-lagfest/">all</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/11/are-female-characters-really-penalized-in-age-of-conan/">sizes</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/funcom-apologizes-for-downtime-awards-free-day/">seen</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/11/a-postmortem-on-age-of-conans-launch/">post-launch</a>. There have also been <a href="http://forums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=144169">several</a> <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm?THREAD=187045&amp;bhcp=1">accusations</a> of forum <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=26407056">censorship</a> and a number of highly publicized <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/10/another-blogger-flees-age-of-conan/">player flights</a> from the game, which may be contributing to market fears that the game is in trouble with its fan base.<br /></p>
<p>On the flip side, it should be noted that the price of Funcom stock had been fairly steady, around $25, for several months prior to March of this year. A sharp increase in price coincided with the release of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/22/x-play-lists-age-of-conan-at-the-top-of-pc-game-sales/">X-Play pre-order statistics</a> for <em>AoC</em> about two months before boxes hit the shelves. That was followed by a distinct downturn just a few weeks after the game's drop date and the slide has continued since, returning it back to familiar price territory just this past week.</p>
<p>So the question remains: was the $54 stock price just a temporary bubble around the launch when pre-orders were running rampant or have investors been scared off with the sentiment around the game?</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/27/funcom-suffering-a-loss-of-investor-confidence/">Funcom suffering a loss of investor confidence</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 27 Jul 2008 10:00:00 EST. We are in an era where the real world economies of some nations are paralyzed by debts incurred from home purchases. Yet in games where there is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/28/the-daily-grind-home-sweet-home/">player housing</a> there is a surprising lack of player debt. MMOGs offer a simplified financial system seemingly impervious to the ills of modern society. What could we as a gaming society learn about real-world finance and money management from the way we act in game?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/20/making-money-the-wisdom-of-mmo-banking/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Making/Money: The Wisdom of MMO Banking</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/20/making-money-the-wisdom-of-mmo-banking/">Making/Money: The Wisdom of MMO Banking</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 20 Apr 2008 17:00:00 EST. This comes from a <a href="http://news.zdnet.co.uk/emergingtech/0,1000000183,39291065,00.htm?r=2">ZDNet report </a>on Kyte's talk about the potential of electronic currencies to reduce overhead costs for pretty much every one. He said Singapore has already introduced an electronic currency and that the rest of the world is watching what happens there.<br /><br />He also said, though, that online currencies like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life"><em>Second Life's</em></a> Linden Dollar carry with them security issues that create "phenomenal opportunities for money laundering and tax evasion." Those issues would have to be resolved before online currencies similar to the L$ or <em>EVE Online</em>'s ISK can be used with confidence in the real world.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.worldsinmotion.biz/2007/11/virtual_worlds_inspiring_a_pus.php">Worlds in Motion</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/27/financial-bigwig-says-virtual-worlds-leading-digital-currency-ch/">Financial bigwig says virtual worlds leading digital currency charge</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 27 Nov 2007 07:00:00 EST.
