It's hard to believe that it's been 10 years to the month since The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring came out in movie theaters. It's even harder to process that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/peter-jackson/">Peter Jackson</a> will be bringing us back to Middle-earth with the two Hobbit films starting a year from now. The Jackson trilogy, while beloved by many (including, I assume, gamers), hasn't gotten a lot of space in this column to date. The general consensus from the community is that the films and the MMO are separate interpretations of the same source material, and never the twain shall meet -- nevermind all the <em>other</em> LotR games, like <a href="http://www.warinthenorth.com"><em>War in the North</em></a>.<br />
<br />
While that may be true, they do meet in the hearts of those who simply love this franchise. I adore the movies, am a huge fan of the game, and like (yes, just "like") the books. But I think that it's worthwhile to go to the films for <a href="http://www.lotro.com/"><em>LotRO</em></a> players because they do give a different perspective and perhaps clarify a few plot points that shoot over our heads in-game. If nothing else, if the movies can revitalize our excitement about exploring the lands of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>, then they've done well by us.<br />
<br />
I mention all this because this past week saw the release of the first Hobbit trailer, which I must have watched a good dozen times, and it got me pumped up once more for this game world. In today's column, I want to use this trailer to springboard a discussion of how <em>LotRO </em>and the films share a common bond and how the Hobbit movies use many elements that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Turbine/">Turbine's</a> been working on for years now. Plus, a bonus Hobbit Tribute Tour!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/24/the-road-to-mordor-baggins-of-bag-end/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: Baggins of Bag End</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/24/the-road-to-mordor-baggins-of-bag-end/">The Road to Mordor: Baggins of Bag End</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 24 Dec 2011 12:00:00 EST. A few months ago, we reported that <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/see-virtual-worlds">SEE Virtual Worlds</a> had acquired <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/11/total-recall-ip-snagged-by-mmo-studio-see-virtual-worlds/">a number of well-known intellectual properties</a>, including the upcoming <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/total-recall">Total Recall</a> remake. At the time, however, it was unknown how the company would put those properties to use.<br />
	<br />
	Well, wonder no more. SEE has announced that it is working on a browser-based Total Recall MMO which will tie into the upcoming film remake. The game will be free-to-play and supported by microtransactions. No release date has been announced yet, but the movie itself is tentatively scheduled for August 3rd, 2012, so a similar release date for the game wouldn't be unreasonable.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/see-games-confirms-total-recall-browser-mmo/">SEE Games confirms Total Recall browser MMO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 Nov 2011 13:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_based_on_video_games">list of films</a> based on video games is long, if not particularly distinguished. The list is about to get a bit lengthier thanks to an upcoming collaboration between <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gaia-interactive">Gaia Interactive</a> and Radar Pictures.<br />
<br />
The two firms have just released a new press blurb trumpeting the fact that they've formed an alliance to bring <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/monster-galaxy"><em>Monster Galaxy</em></a> to the big screen. What the heck is <em>Monster Galaxy</em>, you say? Well, it's a Facebook title that "has reigned as a top 10 game on the platform for six consecutive months," according to the release.<br />
<br />
The film version of <em>Monster Galaxy</em> will feature its unique "Moga" characters as well as "rich story and charming artwork." Gaia Interactive was founded in 2003 and claims to be one of the world's most active social gaming communities. Radar Pictures is owned by Ted Field, an entertainment executive with producer credits on films including Pitch Black, The Last Samurai, and Jumanji.<br />

Hollywood IPs don't have the greatest track record when it comes to making the transition to the MMORPG space, but celebrated film director James Cameron <a href="http://games.ign.com/articles/119/1196331p1.html">recently told IGN</a> that he thinks his Avatar franchise is up to the task.<br />
<br />
In an interview that touches on 3-D entertainment, single-player gaming, and real-world themepark rides, Cameron also says that "Avatar is a perfect IP for an MMO." The massively multiplayer portion of the project seems to be in its infancy, as the director notes that the fictional universe established in the 2009 blockbuster needs to be fleshed out and expanded via the upcoming sequels before consumers can fully grasp how big Avatar really is.<br />
<br />
"The film is really just a leaping off point," Cameron says, "so we've got to create a rich and diverse world that lives well beyond the films." This isn't the first time that scuttlebutt about an Avatar MMO has hit the intarwebs. Cameron's producing partner Jon Landau <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/28/avatar-movie-producer-interested-in-avatar-mmo/">floated the topic</a> in early 2010, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ubisoft">UbiSoft</a> originally <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/14/ubisoft-president-speaks-about-avatar-mmo/">planned to release</a> an Avatar MMO in conjunction with the film's holiday 2009 debut.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/28/more-talk-of-an-avatar-mmo-surfaces/">More talk of an Avatar MMO surfaces from director James Cameron</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 28 Sep 2011 23:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bigpoint">Bigpoint</a> just can't seem to stay out of the news today, and whether its the incendiary <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/07/bigpoint-says-game-publishers-should-sell-in-game-advantages/">pay-to-win remarks</a> of an executive or an update to its Battlestar Galactica browser MMO, there's a lot of interesting buzz swirling around the company of late.<br />
<br />
The devs are adding a new line of fleet recon ships to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/battlestar-galactica-online"><em>Battlestar Galactica Online</em></a>, and the craft will enable both Colonial and Cylon players to jump directly to their targets while "in proximity of an erupting battle." The ships will debut in mid-September and are modeled on the Raptor and Heavy Raider craft from the beloved Syfy television series. Bigpoint's latest press release also mentions that the Brimir-class carrier will be "available this fall, though its size, complexity, and impact on game balance must be optimized before its general release."<br />
<br />
Finally, the company is trumpeting some new metrics, and the release says that <em>BSGO</em> has surpassed the five million registered player mark.<br />

<em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/eve-spotlight">EVE Spotlight</a> is a biweekly feature in which we interview prominent members of </em><a href="http://www.eve-online.com">EVE Online</a><em>'s player community or development team. Every two weeks, we'll be shining the spotlight on a player or developer who has a significant impact on </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/">EVE</a><em> to highlight the efforts of </em>EVE<em>'s most influential people.</em><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is well-known for its community's awesome cinematic productions, and no film is more renowned than the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/clear-skies/">incredible machinima Clear Skies</a>. Directed by <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ian-chisholm">Ian Chisholm</a>, Clear Skies seamlessly merges in-game <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> footage with scenes composed using Valve's Source development kit. The films follow the adventures of captain John Rourke and his crew aboard the Minmatar Tempest class battleship Clear Skies. With more luck than sense, the Clear Skies crew continually finds itself in sticky situations but manages to come out on top.<br />
<br />
The first Clear Skies film won the award for best long-format film at the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/03/eve-online-film-clear-skies-wins-at-machinima-filmfest-2008/">2008 annual Machinima Filmfest</a>, and a second film solidified the series' huge cult following. Clear Skies has even inspired other players <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/19/eve-spotlight-an-interview-with-kyoko-sakoda/">like Kyoko Sakoda</a> to produce their own cinematic masterpieces set in the <em>EVE Online</em> universe. The third and probably final film in the Clear Skies series <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/clear-skies-3-machinima-undocks-to-excited-fans/">was released earlier this week</a>, absolutely shattering all expectations.<br />

Three years ago, the <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> community stood in awe of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/eve-online-meets-half-life-2-in-machinima-masterpiece/">the incredible <em>EVE</em> machinima Clear Skies</a>, directed by Ian Chisholm and written by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ian-chisholm/">Ian Chisholm</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/richie-powles/">Richie Powles</a>. Featuring a combination of space footage filmed in <em>EVE</em> and scenes inside ships composed using the source SDK (Not Garry's mod), the 40-minute masterpiece delivered an impressive blend of action, story and British humour. The film spawned a cult following <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=783871">both inside</a> and outside the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> community, going on to win the award for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/03/eve-online-film-clear-skies-wins-at-machinima-filmfest-2008/">best long-format film at 2008's annual Machinima awards</a>.<br />
<br />
Fans cried out for more, and around a year later <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/10/clear-skies-2-has-been-released/">our patience was rewarded with Clear Skies II</a>. It was somehow bigger, better and more polished than the first film, with a wide range of new voices and some old favourites making a return. We once again followed the adventures of captain John Rourke of the Minmatar battleship Clear Skies and loved every minute of it. The film was a huge hit with fans, but with the story wrapped up in a somewhat neat package and Ian expressing a desire to take a break from production, we weren't sure if a third film would ever see the light of day. Fans of the series were excited to find out this week that <a href="http://www.clearskiesthemovie.com/">Clear Skies III has now officially undocked</a>.<br />
<br />
Skip past the cut to watch the Clear Skies III trailer and find out about the third film in this incredible series.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/clear-skies-3-machinima-undocks-to-excited-fans/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Clear Skies 3 machinima undocks to excited EVE fans</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/clear-skies-3-machinima-undocks-to-excited-fans/">Clear Skies 3 machinima undocks to excited EVE fans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 31 May 2011 14:00:00 EST. I don't know about you, <em><a href="http://ageofconan.com">Age of Conan</a>-</em>faithful, but I'm a hopeless film trailer junkie. I collect them. I watch (and re-watch) them on my computer, my phone, my television, and of course, at the cinema proper. A lot of the time, trailers are substantially better than the full-length films they're meant to sell, and I've even been known to pay full price for a ticket only to walk out after the preview (particularly when said preview concerned a <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120915/">long-awaited prequel</a> and was inexplicably tacked on to the front of Meet Joe Black).<br />
<br />
Given that Conan already plays a significant role in my gaming life, I think deconstructing the recently released trailer for the upcoming <a href="http://www.conanthebarbarianin3d.com/index2.html#/home">film franchise reboot</a> makes a certain sort of sense. Sadly, Massively isn't a haven for film criticism, but I'd like to get around that by doing a bit of theorizing on how the new flick could conceivably affect our favorite MMORPG.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/08/the-anvil-of-crom-can-funcom-capitalize-on-the-conan-film-reboo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Anvil of Crom: Can Funcom capitalize on the Conan film reboot?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/08/the-anvil-of-crom-can-funcom-capitalize-on-the-conan-film-reboo/">The Anvil of Crom: Can Funcom capitalize on the Conan film reboot?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 08 May 2011 12:00:00 EST. When <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/perpetual-entertainment/">Perpetual Entertainment</a> closed its doors in 2008, it seemed all hope of the MMO <a href="http://www.godsandheroes.com"><em>Gods &amp; Heroes: Rome Rising</em></a> being released was lost. Thankfully, the game <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/22/gods-and-heroes-returns-from-the-dead/">was taken up</a> by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/heatwave-interactive/">Heatwave Interactive</a> early last year, and the studio has been pushing it to completion ever since. The game's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/15/check-out-the-gods-and-heroes-rome-rising-closed-beta-with-our/">closed beta is already underway</a>, and the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gods-and-heroes"><em>Gods &amp; Heroes</em></a> team is now offering beta-testers the chance to be featured in an upcoming official game trailer.<br />
<br />
As part of her <a href="http://www.godsandheroes.com/first-fridays/">ongoing "First Friday" event series</a>, Community Manager Donna "Danicia" Prior wants players to break out their webcams and film themselves playing the game. Rather than asking players to capture footage of in-game characters, the <em>Gods &amp; Heroes</em> team wants to see what the player behind the character looks like.<br />
<br />
An official in-game meet-up is happening today in Rome at the Forum Romanum from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. CST to help players partner up and come up with ideas. If you don't make it to the event, the devs at Heatwave Interactive still want to see footage of the player behind your character. For full details on how to enter and the required video specifications, head over to <a href="http://www.godsandheroes.com/first-friday-be-a-star-in-an-upcoming-trailer/">the official <em>Gods &amp; Heroes</em> First Friday announcement</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/04/film-yourself-playing-gods-and-heroes-to-be-immortalised-in-a-trai/">Film yourself playing Gods &amp; Heroes to be immortalised in a trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 14:00:00 EST. Fantasy MMO <a href="http://runesofmagic.com"><em>Runes of Magic</em></a> has been in the news a lot lately, and it hasn't all been positive. Last month, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/15/runes-of-magic-addresses-account-hacks/">self-proclaimed hacker Cpt.Z3r0 claimed to be in possession of the login details</a> to 3.5 million <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/runes-of-magic/"><em>Runes of Magic</em></a> game accounts. It's not all bad news, though, as today <a href="http://us.runesofmagic.com/news,id1872,boss_rush_video_contest_gdc_2011.html">Frogster announced a great new video contest</a> for <em>RoM</em> players. In honour of San Francisco's upcoming <a href="http://www.gdconf.com/">Game Developers Conference</a> at the end of the month, Frogster is giving players the chance to have their video creations featured on the massive widescreen TV in the Frogster booth.<br />
<br />
To enter the Boss Rush video contest, all you have to do is make a video of you and your friends taking down one of <em>RoM</em>'s many instance or world bosses. Upload your video to YouTube and then send a link to the video to <a href="http://us.runesofmagic.com/news,id1872,boss_rush_video_contest_gdc_2011.html">the email address provided</a> to be entered into the contest. The best videos will be put to a general vote by the <em>RoM</em> community, who will pick their single favourite entry to win a huge additional prize. The guild members featured in the video that receives the most votes will be given a Grand Golden Repair Hammer in-game, and the guild leader will get a real-life golden hammer signed by Frogster's US GM team.<br />
<br />
Although any video can be entered, there are a few things you can do to massively improve your chances of success. Uploading your video in a resolution of at least 720p, using a 16:9 aspect ratio and keeping a constant frame-rate of 25 will make your video look more professional. It's also advised that you pick a boss with interesting mechanics, as only the most entertaining videos to watch will be selected. Lastly, Frogster insist that you don't add any extra audio or music that you don't own the rights to. Entries must be in by February 28th for a chance to win.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/03/frogster-announces-runes-of-magic-boss-rush-video-contest/">Frogster announces Runes of Magic Boss Rush video contest</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 03 Feb 2011 21:00:00 EST. Back in November of last year, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/09/documentary-filmmaker-takes-on-mmorpgs/">we came across an interesting documentary on gaming</a> and MMORPGs. In the 60-minute film "Gamers," filmmaker <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ben-gonyo">Ben Gonyo</a> explores today's online gaming culture in an effort to make it more accessible and understandable to a wider audience. For two years, Gonyo immersed himself in <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> and the gaming subculture to find out what it's all about. Although it touches on controversial issues like a player's potential obsession with his or her virtual hobby, the documentary's aim is to heave a mostly light-hearted tone. It includes interviews with gamers, game designers, comedians, celebrities and psychologists.<br />
<br />
Although the film aired on several TV channels, only a brief trailer for the film was made publicly available online. The full 60-minute documentary has now been made publicly available for streaming via the internet. Head over to <a href="http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title/gamers/">the video stream at SnagFilms</a> to watch the film and leave your own comments on the issues covered. International viewers should be advised that the stream may be restricted only to US residents.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/31/gamers-documentary-now-available-for-streaming/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gamers documentary now available for streaming</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/31/gamers-documentary-now-available-for-streaming/">Gamers documentary now available for streaming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 31 Jan 2011 19:00:00 EST. Video game adaptations generally make for pretty bad cinema. Whether its Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, or Tomb Raider, films that originate on a PC or gaming console aren't normally mentioned in the same breath as Citizen Kane or The Godfather. <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1512910/">Duncan Jones</a>, director of 2009's indie smash <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_%28film%29">Moon</a> (and the forthcoming Jake Gyllenhaal vehicle <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_Code_%28film%29">Source Code</a>), says that perception could change with Sam Raimi's <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> adaptation.<br />
<br />
"<em>I really believe </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft">World of Warcraft</a><em> could be the launch of computer games as good films. And from the little I've read of interviews with him the way he's approaching it makes so much sense</em>," Jones told <a href="http://www.badassdigest.com/2010/12/24/moon-director-duncan-jones-thinks-world-of-warcraft-could-be-the-great-video-game-movie">Badass Digest</a> over the holidays. <br />
<br />
So why have so many video game adaptations failed to capture audience hearts and minds? Jones posits that it may be due to the fact that few filmmakers understand games or gamers. "<em>I'm very cynical of the number of directors who say they're actual gamers [...] I'm a real gamer and I think there are less real gamers involved in directing only because you have to spend so much time making films that there's no time to be a hardcore gamer</em>," he said.<br />

Ever wanted to see <a href="http://ccpgames.com">CCP's</a> version of internet spaceships on the silver screen? You may be in luck if you live near a major metropolitan movieplex. In a forum post released yesterday, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP</a> Manifest <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=1428848">broke the news</a> of an <a href="http://eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> trailer attached to selected prints of the new <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tron_Legacy">Tron: Legacy</a> film scheduled for release on December 17th.<br />
<br />
The trailer will run for a limited time (through January 13th to be exact), and will take a bow between eight and 15 minutes prior to showtime as well as twice every 12 minutes in theater lobbies. Details are scarce as to the actual content of the clip, and the showings are currently limited to a handful of venues in the United States. As popular as <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> has become, we almost take it for granted that everyone on the planet is familiar with (or has at least heard of) MMORPGs. Despite the fact that gaming has become relatively mainstream over the last few years, MMORPGs remain mysteriously inaccessible to portions of the populace, and filmmaker Ben Gonyo aims to change all that with a new documentary called <a href="http://gamersfilm.com/homepage">Gamers</a>.<br />
<br />
Gamers sees Gonyo immerse himself in MMO subculture for the better part of two years, and features interviews with over 100 gamers, designers, critics, psychologists, comedians, and celebrities -- including Curt Schilling and R.A. Salvatore. The film is currently airing on the Documentary Channel on both DISH and DirectTV, and you can check out various previews and trailers at the film's <a href="http://gamersfilm.com/">official website</a>, as well as after the cut. Finally, be on the lookout for a Massively review in the near future.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/09/documentary-filmmaker-takes-on-mmorpgs/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Documentary filmmaker takes on MMORPGs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/09/documentary-filmmaker-takes-on-mmorpgs/">Documentary filmmaker takes on MMORPGs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST. There's no doubt about it that <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> can produce some stunning visuals and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/05/eve-evolved-storytelling-in-eve-online/">incredible stories</a>. New Eden has been the setting for countless creative works, some featuring real gameplay and events and others pushing the limits of the prime fiction. Every so often, I come across a video so mind-blowing that it <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eve-video-corner/">has to be shared</a>. Last night <a href="http://www.crazykinux.com/2010/03/eve-online-video-future-proof-part-1.html">CrazyKinux's Musing</a> pointed me toward an awesome new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> video that's been seven months in the making.<br />
<br />
Produced by Kale Ryoko, "Future Proof" tells the tale of a Caldari militia fleet on a combat mission for the state. Headed up by support commander Firefox of the Chimera "Overlord", the fleet must do all it takes to push through to their objective. Assisting with this twelve minute masterpiece is Veto corporation's Kyoko Sadako, the mastermind behind <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/02/eve-evolved-the-top-ten-eve-videos-of-all-time/">such incredible videos</a> as "War Has Come" and "The Angel Cartel (Push Eject)". Made using some of <em>EVE</em>'s art assets and the Unreal 3 Engine, Future Proof is a video that simply must be seen.<br />
<br />

It's not often that we talk about movies here on Massively, but the new(ish) documentary entitled <a href="http://www.secondskinfilm.com/"><em>Second Skin</em></a> is definitely right up our alley. Today marks the debut of <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1183696/"><em>Second Skin</em></a> in select theaters across the United States, as well as <a href="http://www.fancast.com/blogs/the-movies/fancast-movie-of-the-week-online-gaming-gives-us-a-second-skin/">a free showing</a> of the film at various websites.<br /><br />Is the movie worth seeing if you're heavily into MMOs? Well, we try not to do <a href="http://www.mmocrunch.com/2009/08/06/mmo-film-review-second-skin/">reviews</a> here (MMO reviews at least), but I would say it's definitely worth checking out if you enjoy MMOs even a tiny bit. The film showcases the lives of several MMO gamers (mostly <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>WoW</em></a> and <a href="http://everquest.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a>) to show how these games have affected their lives. There's a fairly good balance of good and bad, showing everything from the marriage of people who met in these games to a tragic suicide that was blamed on an MMO. Check it out all this week online at <a href="http://www.fancast.com/blogs/the-movies/fancast-movie-of-the-week-online-gaming-gives-us-a-second-skin/">Fancast</a> or <a href="http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title/second_skin">SnagFilms</a>, or at <a href="http://www.secondskinfilm.com/list">participating theaters</a> across America.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/07/mmo-documentary-second-skin-debuts-in-theaters-today/">MMO documentary "Second Skin" debuts in theaters today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 07 Aug 2009 16:30:00 EST. We don't doubt that many of our readers first got their feet wet in the world of MMOs with <a href="http://everquest.station.sony.com/"><em>EverQuest</em></a>, a game that gave rise to addictions so severe that it was often referred to as "EverCrack" by its loyal fans. It's these folks (this blogger amongst them) that will likely get the most enjoyment out of a new documentary called <em>EverCracked! The Phenomenom of EverQuest</em> that <a href="http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/news_article.vm?id=51506">is set to debut at SOE Fan Faire 2009</a> later this month.<br /><br />The documentary is hosted by Jason "Jace" Hall (of <a href="http://jacehall.tv/">the Jace Hall Show</a>) and features interviews not only with some of the main brains behind the game, but also with another very important group of people -- the players. We aren't sure yet when those who aren't visiting <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/20/soe-fan-faire-2009-now-open-for-registration/">Fan Faire</a> will be able to see it, but for now, check after the break for a preview trailer.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/11/evercracked-the-phenomenon-of-everquest-to-debut-at-soe-fan-f/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>"EverCracked! Happy birthday to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">the EVE Evolved column</a>! The column is one year old today. Last week, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/20/eve-evolved-a-year-of-eve-evolved-5-most-popular-articles/">I launched a competition</a> for one lucky reader to win a fully fitted battleship of their choice. All they had to do was leave a comment and say which previous article in the column was their favourite. 44 people entered the competition before the April 25th deadline and a winner was selected via <a href="http://www.random.org/">random number generator</a>. Congratulations to regular Massively reader Vundal! As he's a relatively new player, Vundal opted to receive a fully fitted, rigged Drake battlecruiser and a set of implants rather than a battleship of the same value.<br />
<br />
In today's column, I celebrate this anniversary occasion with a little self-indulgence as I take a look at a few of my personal favourite column posts.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/27/eve-evolved-a-year-of-eve-evolved-personal-favourites/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: A year of EVE Evolved - personal favourites</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/27/eve-evolved-a-year-of-eve-evolved-personal-favourites/">EVE Evolved: A year of EVE Evolved - personal favourites</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 27 Apr 2009 19:30:00 EST. <br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/22/bioware-on-mmo-storytelling-in-star-wars-the-old-republic/">Storytelling is a major part of most MMOs</a>, with each game having its own unique back-story and fiction. Fantasy settings like Everquest's world of Norrath have even been made into novels and some original fantasy literature like Lord of the Rings has conversely <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online/">made its way into the MMO scene</a>. Quests and expansions in an MMO usually lead the character through an interactive story where the player assumes the role of a hero. Although space-borne MMO <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span></a> doesn't share that pattern and the the game's storyline doesn't develop during play, storytelling may actually be more important to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span></a> than it is to its fantasy counterparts. In the same way that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/02/eve-evolved-the-top-ten-eve-videos-of-all-time/"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> lends itself spectacularly to making videos</a>, the <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> community has created some awesome fiction and there are some incredible real stories of in-game events. Combined with the wealth of prime fiction and the regular release of official chronicles, it's clear that storytelling is a big deal in <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span>.<br /><br />Read on as I delve into the <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> storyline and the various forms of storytelling that players can expect to take part in. If being part of epic events and telling the story sounds like your cup of tea, perhaps <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> is for you.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/05/eve-evolved-storytelling-in-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Storytelling in EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/05/eve-evolved-storytelling-in-eve-online/">EVE Evolved: Storytelling in EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 05 Apr 2009 20:00:00 EST. Fans of television shows like Battlestar Galactica know very well that a story of humanity's struggle for survival has a particularly strong emotional pull. The creators of <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span></a> recognized this long ago, creating an extensive body of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">lore about the races of New Eden</a> and their clashes with one another on a galactic scale. Their long history of conflicts creates endless ripples of discord felt by later generations, resulting in the subjugation of entire races countered by the will to be free of such tyranny. <br /><br />The struggle to survive in the face of a great threat is central to the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span></a> machinima "Day of Darkness II", which is nothing short of exceptional. It's a short film created in-game by <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> player Dire Lauthris and a retelling of a key bit of <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span>'s lore. In fact, Lauthris drew upon one of the actual Chronicles called "<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/default.asp?cid=aug01">The Breakout</a>". Day of Darkness II focuses on the strife between the Caldari and Gallente races of New Eden, turning back the clock to a historic battle 200 years ago between the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gallery/the-birth-of-new-eden/1006573/">Caldari State</a> and the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gallery/the-birth-of-new-eden/1006574">Gallente Federation</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/03/fan-made-eve-video-day-of-darkness-ii-blows-away-players-and-de/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Fan made EVE video Day of Darkness II blows away players and devs alike</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/03/fan-made-eve-video-day-of-darkness-ii-blows-away-players-and-de/">Fan made EVE video Day of Darkness II blows away players and devs alike</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 03 Apr 2009 13:00:00 EST. When you've just released an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king">expansion pack</a> that sold more copies than most major stand-alone releases, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/20/wows-lich-king-sells-record-2-8-million-copies-in-24-hours/">all in less than 24 hours</a>, you know you're sitting on a goldmine of a franchise. <a href="http://www.blizzard.com">Blizzard</a>, of course, is aware of this, what with <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> getting a licensed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/14/world-of-warcraft-miniatures-game-launches/">miniature game</a> and a coming feature film adaptation.<br /><br />And speaking of the feature film adaptation, we have some elusive news about that. MTV's Multiplayer blog <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/11/20/world-of-warcraft-movie-update">had a chat with Blizzard's Frank Pearce</a> about the project. The scoop is that the studio, Legendary Pictures, is still looking for a screenwriter and director. Obviously, that means the movie is very early in development.<br /><br />MTV also asked Pearce if Blizzard's own world-renowned CGI animators would be involved in producing the special effects for the movie. Pearce said that the suggestion has "come up in discussions but it's not something we've really considered because it takes so long to generate just the brief amount of footage that we create for the game."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/21/wow-movie-still-needs-a-writer-blizzard-cgi-team-wont-be-invol/">WoW movie still needs a writer, Blizzard's CGI team won't be involved</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 11:00:00 EST. Although Jordan passed away in 2007, he left behind 11 novels and a deep imaginative legacy that could prove to be a popular setting in the MMO world. Rick Selvage and Larry Mondragon from <a href="http://www.red-eagle-entertainment.com/">Red Eagle Entertainment</a>, which has spun off Red Eagle Games, recently spoke with <a href="http://www.venturebeat.com">VentureBeat's</a> Dean Takahashi about their plans to bring <em>The Wheel of Time</em> into the realms of film and games. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117990464.html?categoryid=13&amp;cs=1">Film tie-ins</a> with The Wheel of Time IP have already been funded, they're still in the process of raising funds for Red Eagle Games, according to Selvage. <em>"That could prove to be difficult, but he said he has already received an enthusiastic reaction, largely because the rights to the series are considered so valuable,"</em> Takahashi writes. Funding issues aside, whether or not Red Eagle Games can break free of the stigma connected with games released in tandem with films isn't clear yet. <em>"Selvage said he is aware of the risks and he believes that most games based on movies fail because they are made in too short a time and there isn't enough cooperation with the movie studio,"</em> Takahashi adds. <br /><br />Are you familiar with The Wheel of Time series of novels, and do you think the setting and lore would lend itself well to a massively multiplayer online title?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/12/red-eagle-games-to-develop-the-wheel-of-time-mmo/">Red Eagle Games to develop The Wheel of Time MMO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 12 Nov 2008 18:00:00 EST. Fans and critics alike <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/eve-online-meets-half-life-2-in-machinima-masterpiece/">have praised Clear Skies</a> since its release. Indeed, the film recently <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/03/eve-online-film-clear-skies-wins-at-machinima-filmfest-2008/">took top honors at Machinima Filmfest 2008</a>, garnering a Mackie award for Best Long Format Film. <br /><br />This success at the festival was met with astonishment from Clear Skies creator Ian Chisholm as well as from his collaborators, John Guthrie and Richie Powles. But it was decidedly less of a surprise to the many fans of the film, a seemingly ever-growing number judging by the number of times Clear Skies has been <a href="http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/JohnRourke/Clear_Skies.wmv">downloaded from EVE-Files</a>. <br /><br />Massively recently caught up with Clear Skies creator <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ian-chisholm">Ian Chisholm</a>, who was gracious enough to provide us with a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/behind-the-scenes-of-clear-skies-2/1144196/">sequence of production stills</a> from Clear Skies 2, explaining how he brings a scene to life in stages from voice recording, to choreography, to the culmination of this work in the final footage. While we had his attention, Ian also discussed what drives a man to dedicate years of his life to a project of this caliber, and what he has in store for us with Clear Skies 2.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/behind-the-scenes-of-clear-skies-2/">Behind the scenes of Clear Skies 2</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/behind-the-scenes-of-clear-skies-2/#1144196"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/1-act2scene5-raw-voice-rec_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Raw voice recording" title="Raw voice recording" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/behind-the-scenes-of-clear-skies-2/#1144197"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/2-act2scene5-lipsynching_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Lipsyncing" title="Lipsyncing" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/behind-the-scenes-of-clear-skies-2/#1144198"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/3-act2scene5-pt04-choreo_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Choreography" title="Choreography" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/behind-the-scenes-of-clear-skies-2/#1144199"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/4-act2scene5-pt04-set_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Hammer map editor" title="Hammer map editor" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/behind-the-scenes-of-clear-skies-2/#1144200"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/5-act2scene5-pt04-still_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Shot from final footage" title="Shot from final footage" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/massively-interviews-clear-skies-creator-ian-chisholm/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively interviews Clear Skies creator Ian Chisholm</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/massively-interviews-clear-skies-creator-ian-chisholm/">Massively interviews Clear Skies creator Ian Chisholm</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 08 Nov 2008 16:00:00 EST. Above is the sole bit of evidence that the <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> movie has seen any completed work at all -- one item of concept art. We know very little about the film, and the only news we've gotten recently is that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/uwe-boll-wont-be-making-a-world-of-warcraft-film/">Uwe Boll will not be directing</a> it (admittedly that's very good news). Joystiq blogger <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/kevin-kelly">Kevin Kelly</a> is perfectly fine with that, as he wrote a <a href="http://blog.spout.com/2008/10/31/world-of-warcraft-movie-shouldnt-happen/">blog entry over at Spout</a> about why this movie really oughtn't ever get made at all.<br /><br />Three reasons were provided: <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0190374/"><em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons</em></a> was a disaster, it couldn't earn back its huge budget even if every <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a> player in the world went to see it, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/03/world-of-warcrafts-expansion-lore-needs-addendums-to-understand/">not even most <em>WoW</em> players</a> know what the story of the game really is. There was a fourth reason, too, but it isn't so much a reason as why it shouldn't be made as why it won't be -- the concept art is all we have after two years.<br /><br />It's true that the movie couldn't make it on <em>WoW</em> players alone; it'd have to be appealing to people unfamiliar with the franchise, too. But we really doubt that's going to happen, and it doesn't matter anyway because, as we said, it probably will never get made!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/10/31/why-they-shouldnt-make-the-warcraft-movie/">WoW Insider</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/31/since-the-wow-movie-probably-wont-happen-anyway-heres-why-it/">Since the WoW movie probably won't happen anyway, here's why it shouldn't</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 31 Oct 2008 20:00:00 EST. Howard's pulp fiction stories. Nevertheless, the <a href="http://www.massively.com">Massively</a> office is now full of ideas for MMO-based movies.<br /><br />There have been rumors of <a href="http://everquest.station.sony.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a> and <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> films in the past. Some would say there's a fundamental problem with the idea though: there's no story to adapt! Let's face it: movies adapted from computer and video games <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1058516-street_fighter/">have</a> <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/super_mario_bros/">usually</a> <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/hitman?q=hitman">been</a> <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/video/titles/residentevil?q=resident%20evil">pretty</a> <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/aloneinthedark?q=alone%20in%20the%20dark">damned</a> <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/double_dragon/">terrible.</a> But if there is a disconnect between the two different styles of storytelling, then maybe MMOs are the <em>perfect</em> games to adapt to film. Since they only provide a setting, screenwriters, directors, and producers can create a medium-appropriate story of their own.<br /><br />Then again, isn't that what they do most of the time anyway? What do you think; could an MMO be adapted into a good movie? Why or why not? And if it can, which virtual would would you lke to see on the silver screen?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/26/the-daily-grind-movies-based-on-mmos/">The Daily Grind: Movies based on MMOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 26 Aug 2008 08:00:00 EST. Among the most interesting tidbits: <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=218840">concept art for the first <em>AoC</em> expansion</a> should be released later this week. Word is that it has a "strongly oriental look", perhaps hinting at an Eastern-themed context. They're <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=218934">also talking about a film tie-in</a>, hinting at connections between the Lionsgate movie production and the MMO. Details on that promotion were as sparse as the expansion hints, other than Ellingson saying they have "a very close relationship with the guys making the movie." <br /><br />The site also put forward <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=218893">information about upcoming updates to the gameworld</a>. Hints at the "Black Castle", the Commons district of the capital city Tarantia, and the much-anticipated Ymir's Pass are all in the article. The Pass was mentioned by Erling Ellingson as one of his favorite upcoming content pieces in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-erling-ellingsen-talks-patch-timeframes-for-age-of-conan/">our recent interview with the project lead</a>. One of my personal friends, <a href="http://www.nexeusfatale.com/">Nexeus Fatale</a>, was a subject in this documentary about MMOs and I've been hearing about it for at least a year. The wait finally appears to be over as they are hoping to premiere it at <a href="http://sxsw.com/">SXSW</a> in March. However, <a href="http://purewestmedia.com/secondskin/?id=home">Pure West</a> released a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPOxuOCGi9I">trailer</a> today to whet our appetite!<br /><br />The trailer itself mainly focuses on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> players as they fall in love, develop gaming addictions, and as they work together in guilds. However, I did spot two scenes with Nexeus and a short blurb from Tony Walsh, of <a href="http://www.secretlair.com/index.php?/clickableculture/">Clickable Culture</a>. They represent the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life/"><em>Second Life</em></a> aspect of the film, which was sadly neglected in the trailer. If you enjoyed the preview, you can check out the <a href="http://purewestmedia.com/secondskin/">hi-res versions</a> on their site.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/29/cinemassively-second-skin-trailer/">Cinemassively: Second Skin Trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 29 Jan 2008 12:30:00 EST. <div align="left">Whether or not you're into documentaries, (for the record, we think they can be very interesting) if you've played massively multiplayer online games in any form then <a href="http://www.secondskinfilm.com/?id=about">Second Skin</a> by Pure West Documentaries is a movie you'll want to check out at some point. The trailer is going to be debuting tomorrow, Tuesday, January 29th 2008 according to Victor Pineiro; the writer and producer of the film.<br /><br />The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/21/documentary-shows-our-second-skin/">movie itself</a> says it will cover guilds, virtual couples, virtual world addiction, gold farming, virtual identities, disabled massively gaming, guild leadership, cybersex and consult some experts from the industry itself. That's a lot of subjects to cover in one movie, but then again when your movie looks closely at how these worlds affect the lives of the people that play them -- well, then there is a lot to talk about. <br /><br />Don't forget to check back tomorrow for the world debut of Second Skin's trailer.<br /></div>

<a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com">Ten Ton Hammer</a> has posted <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/16086">part 1 of their great Q&amp;A</a> with the folks at <a href="http://www.pwdocs.com/">Pure West Documentaries</a>, the company behind <a href="http://www.pwdocs.com/secondskin/"><em>Second Skin</em></a>. What is <em>Second Skin</em>? A documentary film about us... the players of the very subject matter you come to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/">Massively</a> to read about. It's a film that tells the tale of real-life players - your co-workers, your wife, boss, or even the girl next door - living within the virtual worlds of MMOs as someone - or some <em>thing</em> - else.<br /><em><br /></em>The interview asks a lot of very interesting questions and is absolutely worth the time to read. The film has been in the making for two years and was <a href="http://www.pwdocs.com/secondskin/blog/">just recently finished</a>. It's due to make it's debut at the <a href="http://sxsw.com/">South by Southwest Film Festival</a> in March 2008. This is not a shockumentary or a slam film. The guys at Pure West are, like us, gamers who set out to put together a film that walks the tight rope between showing both the negative (of which we hear about all too often) <strong><em>and</em></strong> positive (which we hardly ever hear about) sides of this growing phenomena.<br /><br />Peter Schieffelin Brauer, producer of the film says: <em>Certainly we hear a lot about the negative aspects. But I think one thing we found was really important was to really give both sides a voice. Of course, I'm a gamer, I care about the gamer's voice a lot more, but if I don't come out and acknowledge the other side, no one's going to listen to me.</em><br /><br />This statement in and of itself speaks to the legitimacy of the filmmakers. I know I'll be buying a ticket when this film hits my local metroplex.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/21/documentary-shows-our-second-skin/">Documentary shows our Second Skin</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 21 Dec 2007 15:00:00 EST. The Warcraft movie is going to have some competition-- <a href="http://www.firstshowing.net/2007/10/06/avi-arad-producing-an-everquest-movie/"><em>Everquest</em> is also going to be the target of a movie property</a>, and word is going around that it'll be produced by Avi Arad, former Marvel Comics head and the man behind Spider-man and X-men.<br /><br />Michael Gordon is supposedly writing the screenplay-- he was one of three writers who worked on 300 ("This is Norrath!!"), and unfortunately <a href="http://imdb.com/name/nm1290582/">doesn't have that much more</a> to his name yet. Apparently he did the original pitch, though, so maybe he's a player, and word is that the story will feature actual characters from the game itself.<br /><br />I don't want to ruin your day or anything, EQ fans, but I wouldn't hold your breath on this one. I'd love to see a movie starring Erudites and Iksar as much as the next guy, but right now this is looking more like <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0369226/">Alone in the Dark</a> than <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0384537/">Silent Hill</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/10/07/everquest-movie-is-inc-avid-arad-producing/">Everquest movie is inc, Avid Arad producing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 07 Oct 2007 12:20:00 EST.
