After his departure from the <a href="http://www.diablo3.com"><em>Diablo III</em></a> development team, Game Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jay-wilson/">Jay Wilson</a> released a statement that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/diablo-iiis-auction-house-really-hurt-the-game/">the introduction of an auction house "really hurt the game."</a> While players predicted doom the moment the Real Money Auction House was announced, Jay argued that the gold auction house was equally to blame for the game's fall from grace following an absolutely stellar launch. I don't normally agree with what Jay has to say on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/diablo-iii/"><em>Diablo III</em></a>, but in this case he does have a very valid point.<br />
<br />
 <a href="http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/games/d2/"><em>Diablo II</em></a> was consistently popular for over a decade thanks to its immense replayability. At its core, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/diablo-ii"><em>D2</em></a> was a game about building new characters and gearing them up by any means necessary. Every enemy in the game was a loot pinata just waiting to be popped, and players farmed endlessly for a few sought-after unique items. You almost never found an item that was ideal for your particular class and build, but you could usually trade for what you needed via trade channels and forums.<br />
<br />
 <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/path-of-exile">Blizzard</a> claimed that the auction house was intended just to streamline this process, but when <em>Diablo III</em> launched, it was clear that the entire game had been designed to make the auction house almost necessary for progress. The fault here lies not just with the concept of an auction house but with the game designers.<br />
<br />
That's right: I'm here to argue not only that Jay Wilson was right about the auction house ruining <em>Diablo III</em> but also that it was his own damn fault.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/the-soapbox-diablo-iiis-auction-house-ruined-the-game/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Soapbox: Diablo III's auction house ruined the game</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/the-soapbox-diablo-iiis-auction-house-ruined-the-game/">The Soapbox: Diablo III's auction house ruined the game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 21 May 2013 10:00:00 EST. <br />
 <a href="\"><em>Diablo III</em></a> celebrated the first anniversary of its release on May 15th with anniversary livestreams and a magic-find bonus for all players. It's not often that my writings take a ranty slant, In fact, I don't believe I have ever expressed anything along those lines here in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/chaos-theory">Chaos Theory</a> -- although I have a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/12/wings-over-atreia-when-egos-attack/">time</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/10/wings-over-atreia-a-rant-against-xenophobia-in-aion/">or</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/25/wings-over-atreia-rant-powers-activate/">two</a> elsewhere. Blue moons come and go much more frequently than I don my Massively-standard-issue flame-retardant garb and venture forth. But right here, right now looks to be one of those times, and I'm already suiting up. So what about <em><a href="http://www.thesecretworld.com/">The Secret World</a></em> has me riled up enough to flex my woefully underused ranting muscle?<br />
<br />
Nothing.<br />
<br />
Seriously, I can't call to mind a single thing in the game deserving of a rant. Sure, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world/"><em>TSW</em></a> isn't perfect; there are flaws and there are things that could use improving, things that are certainly worth discussing. But rant-inducing? Nope. Too bad the same can't be said for <em>people</em>.<br />
<br />
It doesn't matter how many times I've witnessed it: It never ceases to amaze me when folks trumpet their own opinions as fact while insisting dissenting opinions can't possibly exist. It's like they board the crazy train where the lines between opinion and fact are swirled together like coffee and creamer, where reality and logic are tossed right out the window. So as a public service, I'm going to derail that train.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/20/chaos-theory-opinions-facts-and-open-flames/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chaos Theory: Opinions, facts, and open flames</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/20/chaos-theory-opinions-facts-and-open-flames/">Chaos Theory: Opinions, facts, and open flames</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 20 May 2013 15:00:00 EST. It's a little strange to think that it's already been three months since the developers at <em><a href="http://startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online</a></em> first teased us with the <em><a href="http://sto.perfectworld.com/legacyofromulus">Legacy of Romulus</a></em> expansion with the March Beneath the Raptor's Wings kicker at the end of the anniversary video. Even then there were many of us who sincerely doubted the teaser meant we would finally be able to play a Romulan character, let alone that the Klingon faction would be filled-out.<br />

Yet here we are, on the eve of the release of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/">Star Trek Online's</a></em> first expansion and a flood of new material. Beware, I will be writing spoilers about the new content, but if you're not worried about that, feel free to join me as I touch on most of what we're going to see!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/20/captains-log-stos-legacy-of-romulus-expansion-launches-tomorr/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: What to expect in Star Trek Online's Legacy of Romulus expansion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/20/captains-log-stos-legacy-of-romulus-expansion-launches-tomorr/">Captain's Log: What to expect in Star Trek Online's Legacy of Romulus expansion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 20 May 2013 13:00:00 EST. The downside to writing about <a href="http://www.wildstar-online.com"><em>WildStar</em></a> in this stage of the game's lifecycle is that because of the very nature of beta tests, I'm going to be spending a lot of time speculating instead of talking about certainties. Last week, I speculated. I was wrong on some points, as I found out when I got a letter from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Carbine/">Carbine</a> clarifying some things that had previously been ambiguous enough for speculation.<br />
<br />
The upside to writing about <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/WildStar/">WildStar</a></em> in this stage of the game's lifecycle is that sometimes I get letters from development staff letting me in on valuable inside information.<br />
<br />
Aside from being able to clarify my previous incorrect speculation, I also have for you a number of other important bits of information regarding the game this week, including a brief discussion of whether or not the game will allow for flight on a regular basis. So since that's well worth discussing, let's go ahead and just make this column another dialogue about movement.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/20/the-nexus-telegraph-still-moving-in-wildstar/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Nexus Telegraph: Still moving in WildStar</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/20/the-nexus-telegraph-still-moving-in-wildstar/">The Nexus Telegraph: Still moving in WildStar</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 20 May 2013 11:00:00 EST. Two weeks ago, y'all had the chance to select a new holiday to help add some cheer to the otherwise bland weeks in the middle of May. The choices teased and tantalized you, but you're a discriminating crowd. In a race fraught with nail-biting suspense, only one ultimately prevailed. And so it is with further ado we bring to you: Monocle Day!<br />
<br />
This Tuesday, May 21st, has been selected to be the auspicious day of this most storied celebration. Why? Because 5/21 splits into 5 + 2 + 1, which of course = 8, and we all know that 8 is just two monocles stacked on top of each other! And as always, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/livestream">Massively TV</a> is here to help you ring in the new holiday, with special shows throughout the entire week. Check out the full schedule of celebratory events hosted by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-stream-team/">The Stream Team</a> after the break. Then let us know if you'll be wearing your own monocle in honor of the festivities.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/20/the-stream-team-monocle-day-edition-may-20-26-2013/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Stream Team: Monocle Day edition, May 20 - 26, 2013</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/20/the-stream-team-monocle-day-edition-may-20-26-2013/">The Stream Team: Monocle Day edition, May 20 - 26, 2013</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 20 May 2013 09:00:00 EST. <em>At the end of every week, we round up the best and most popular news stories, exclusive features, and insightful columns published on <a href="http://www.massively.com">Massively</a> and then present them all in one convenient place. If you missed a big MMO or <a href="http://wow.joystiq.com">WoW Insider</a> story last week, you've come to the right post.</em><br />
<br />
This week, Trion Worlds' announcement that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/rift-goes-free-to-play-promises-no-tricks-no-traps/"><em>RIFT</em> will transition to a free-to-play MMO</a> in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/17/rift-gives-a-sneak-peek-at-f2p-item-shop/">less than a month</a> was tempered by news that the studio was forced to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/17/trion-reportedly-undergoing-massive-layoffs/">lay off a large portion of its staff</a>, though the <em>RIFT</em> team itself was unaffected. Meanwhile, CCP's console shooter <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/dust-514-launch-day-roundup/"><em>DUST 514</em> officially launched</a>; Massively's Jef Reahard delivered <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/massivelys-dust-514-launch-impressions/">tepid impressions</a> of the game.<br />

Last month saw the huge tenth anniversary <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> Fanfest, a three-day convention packed full of exclusive reveals, behind-the-scenes talks, and community events. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eve-fanfest-2013">This year's Fanfest was the biggest one yet</a>, celebrating <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>'s tenth anniversary with special guest speakers from the scientific community, the reveal of a new virtual reality dogfighter, <a href="http://dust514.com"><em>DUST 514</em></a>'s launch, and details of the upcoming <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/odyssey">Odyssey</a></em> expansion. Massively was there to bring you coverage of the big news as it happened, and CCP streamed some of the key talks and events live to viewers at home.<br />
<br />
This year's Fanfest sold out so quickly that many people who wanted to go didn't get a chance to, and only a select few talks were shown on the public livestream. With such a packed event schedule, even players in attendance couldn't be there for every interesting talk. Thankfully, CCP recorded over 30 of the most anticipated events and has now uploaded the videos to YouTube. Highlights include the Make EVE Real videos, the EVE keynote, the CCP Presents Keynote, and the talks on how <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514/"><em>DUST 514</em></a> integrates with the<em> EVE</em> economy.<br />

In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a>, I round up all of the EVE Fanfest videos in a handy list.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/19/eve-evolved-fanfest-2013-video-roundup/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Fanfest 2013 video roundup</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/19/eve-evolved-fanfest-2013-video-roundup/">EVE Evolved: Fanfest 2013 video roundup</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 19 May 2013 18:00:00 EST. I was talking with a gaming buddy recently who missed the whole space sim experience in the 1990s. He's a Star Wars fan and a real-life pilot pushing 40, so it surprised me to learn that he'd never heard of <em>Wing Commander</em>, <em>Freespace</em>, <em>X-Wing</em>, and the like. My jaw really hit the floor as our conversation turned to current games and I began to evangelize about <a href="http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/"><em>Star Citizen</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chris-roberts">Chris Roberts</a>.<br />
<br />
"Who's Chris Roberts?" he asked, with a straight face.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/19/stick-and-rudder-why-all-the-love-for-roberts-and-star-citizen/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Stick and Rudder: Why all the love for Roberts and Star Citizen?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/19/stick-and-rudder-why-all-the-love-for-roberts-and-star-citizen/">Stick and Rudder: Why all the love for Roberts and Star Citizen?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 19 May 2013 14:00:00 EST. As a part of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/MUD-May/">MUD May</a>, I just had to play at least one MUD for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rise-and-shiny/">Rise and Shiny</a>. I have a handful of favorite MUDs, like <a href="https://www.play.net/gs4/"><em>GemStone IV</em></a>, <a href="http://www.bat.org/"><em>BatMUD</em></a>, and <a href="http://www.achaea.com/"><em>Achaea</em></a>, but I have never really given <a href="https://www.play.net/dr/"><em>DragonRealms</em></a> a chance. Until now. I've poked into it here and there, but every time I found myself on the <a href="http://www.play.net/corporate/">Simutronics</a> website, I always logged into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gemstone-iv/"><em>GemStone IV</em></a>. I heard that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/DragonRealms"><em>DragonRealms</em></a> was a lot different, more hardcore, and filled with PvP, and after spending an initial week with the game and the killer community, I can say that it <em>is</em> different, but mainly in a few outstanding ways. Of course I might find much more that sets the game apart if I played it for several years like some of the people I met in game, but for now I'll settle with telling you what I've learned so far.<br />
<br />
The usual embedded video in this article serves two purposes. First, it's an interview piece I did with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-latham/">Eric Latham</a>, Producer at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/simutronics/">Simutronics</a>. Next, it's a glance at <em>DragonRealms</em>, from character creation to a bit of gameplay. It's not as in-depth as my other videos, but it keeps in the greater theme of MUD May.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/19/rise-and-shiny-dragonrealms/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny: DragonRealms</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/19/rise-and-shiny-dragonrealms/">Rise and Shiny: DragonRealms</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 19 May 2013 12:00:00 EST. Lately, there have been a number of topics all vying for my attention here in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook">Tattered Notebook</a>. In a couple of instances, some of them got a little rough and started pushing the others around to try for a better place in line. Yet all the while, <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> Moonlight Enchantments has been patiently waiting. So as a reward (we do like to reward good behavior here!), that quiet little topic is getting the spotlight in a special bonus edition. And the timing couldn't be more perfect!<br />
<br />
You see, initially this guide was just going to focus on speed to help you get through that short two-day event that comes but once a month on the 20th and 21st in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a>. Now, however, we get to delve into the changes and new things coming to the Enchanted Grottoes, from even more housing items (yes, that's on top of the new additions in March) to two new repeatable quests to earn the tokens to buy the items. And with this month's festival right around the corner, having a game plan ready to get the most out of those two days will benefit new and old players alike.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/tattered-notebook-a-guide-to-eqiis-moonlight-enchantments-an/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tattered Notebook: A guide to EQII's Moonlight Enchantments (with new stuff!)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/tattered-notebook-a-guide-to-eqiis-moonlight-enchantments-an/">Tattered Notebook: A guide to EQII's Moonlight Enchantments (with new stuff!)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 18 May 2013 20:00:00 EST. Do you smell that on the wind, my friends? It smells like June is fast approaching, and more importantly it smells like soon we'll be able to welcome the third phase of testing with open arms. Which is good, since I am currently going through withdrawal. I wake up in cold sweats, try to change my class in other games, start up the <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> beta client in the hopes that someone "accidentally" turned the servers back on... you get the general idea.<br />
<br />
To help alleviate this, I'm going to talk about the two pieces of the game from the first two beta phases that are in need of the most polish. While there are places to improve elsewhere, FATEs and dungeons have issues that might need a bit more hammering to fix. Or they might be fine and we just haven't yet seen enough of the game to know everything. Either way, let's get started with the big addition to the game, the system that had no predecessor in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/">Final Fantasy XIV</a></em>'s first version: the FATE system.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/the-mog-log-final-fantasy-xiv-beta-phase-1-and-2-fates-and-du/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Mog Log: Final Fantasy XIV beta phase 1 and 2 - FATEs and dungeons</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/the-mog-log-final-fantasy-xiv-beta-phase-1-and-2-fates-and-du/">The Mog Log: Final Fantasy XIV beta phase 1 and 2 - FATEs and dungeons</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 18 May 2013 16:00:00 EST. Who says we can't get what we want? I wanted the Shugo Kingdom Adventure event to return to <em><a href="http://na.aiononline.com/en/">Aion</a></em>, and I'm getting my wish. Booyah! No, really, it's true: Starting after maintenance on May 22nd, Daevas who've flown over level 50 will again be able to journey for a limited time to the long lost vaults of the Shugo Kingdom in search of great and glorious treasure. And by treasure, I mean a trove of chests filled with AP items, Stormwing armor pieces and weapons, or even rare sets of wings. Of course what you get depends on how many keys you have and a little luck, so there's no harm in starting your sacrifices to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion/"><em>Aion's</em></a> RNG gods now.<br />
<br />
Did you miss out on the event last time but are looking forward to it this go around? Or maybe you need a refresher because the trauma of not getting <em>that one item</em> caused you to block all knowledge of the zone from your mind? Either way, this edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/wings-over-atreia/">Wings Over Atreia</a> will give you a heads up on what to expect. And as an added bonus, Associate Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sean-Orlikowski/">Sean Orlikowski</a> shared his tips and tricks for making the most of your Shugo Kingdom Adventures.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/wings-over-atreia-shugo-kingdom-returns-to-aion/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wings Over Atreia: Shugo Kingdom returns to Aion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/wings-over-atreia-shugo-kingdom-returns-to-aion/">Wings Over Atreia: Shugo Kingdom returns to Aion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 18 May 2013 14:00:00 EST. In my <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> career, I've played two classes far more than any others: the Captain and the Lore-master. Both scratch that "pet class" itch that I have in MMOs, both are quite group-friendly, and both seem to be somewhat unorthodox picks (at least compared to the plague of Hunters and Champions infecting the game).<br />
<br />
I'll leave a discussion about Captains for another time, but today I felt like talking about the strangeness that is the Lore-master. It's such a unique class in feel and execution, and it's captivated me such that I'm actually leveling up my second Lore-master because I was dissatisfied with the way I handled my first one.<br />
<br />
Maybe you've never tried one. Maybe you picked one up and just couldn't get a feel for what it was supposed to do. I'll admit that the LM is an acquired taste, partially because its skillset is all over the map and it doesn't settle into an expected template. However, it may just be the coolest class in the game. Here are six reasons why.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/the-road-to-mordor-six-reasons-lotros-lore-masters-rock/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: Six reasons LotRO's Lore-masters rock</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/the-road-to-mordor-six-reasons-lotros-lore-masters-rock/">The Road to Mordor: Six reasons LotRO's Lore-masters rock</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 18 May 2013 12:00:00 EST. It finally happened. Like fools, we ignored the dire warnings of what would happen if we kept posting stuff about games you don't like or articles you didn't agree with. The worst has finally come to pass -- someone no longer likes our Facebook page.<br />
<br />
We've been in shock here at the office. I've been hitting the rum pretty hard even by my standards, Jef is sitting in an empty bathtub sobbing, and Bree has been playing "Unbreak my Heart" on loop for about seven hours. We'd plead for that reader to come back, but he'll never see it. He <em>no longer likes us</em>. It's really the worst insult you could deliver.<br />
<br />
Despite the fact that this traumatic event has left us as broken shells, we somehow managed to pull ourselves together long enough to put together an installment of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/WRUP/">WRUP</a>. Click on past the break to see what we're up to for the next couple of days other than staring at the number of likes on Facebook, and let us know what you'll be up to in the comments.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/wrup-someone-no-longer-likes-us-on-facebook-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>WRUP: Someone no longer likes us on Facebook edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/wrup-someone-no-longer-likes-us-on-facebook-edition/">WRUP: Someone no longer likes us on Facebook edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 18 May 2013 10:00:00 EST. Roleplaying is the same as it ever was. People are still shoehorning in lore characters into backstories, someone is a sparkly magic vampire, and you can still turn a corner in a tavern to find two people with a decided lack of gear or public shame. (In <a href="http://www.secondlife.com"><em>Second Life</em></a>, that corner is the one you turn to download the game.) But I've had three years of talking about it, so it's at least a little different than it was.<br />
<br />
I don't know if I'd go so far as to say it's <em>better</em>.<br />
<br />
Every year I like to take a look back at the past year, talk about what worked well, what didn't work at all, and what I'd like to do in the future. So it is for this year, complete with a nice big surprise down at the end there. Regular readers may be less surprised, but you can just bear with me.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/17/storyboard-the-way-it-was-for-three-years/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Storyboard: The way it was for three years</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/17/storyboard-the-way-it-was-for-three-years/">Storyboard: The way it was for three years</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 17 May 2013 21:00:00 EST. Early access for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Marvel-Heroes/">Marvel Heroes</a></em> is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/16/marvel-heroes-prepares-for-the-end-at-the-beginning/">just around the corner</a>, if you consider 11 days to be a corner. It'll be a chance for everyone to get started on the process of hitting the level cap... or at least getting halfway there before grinding dailies. Your mileage may vary. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DUST-514/">DUST 514</a></em> finally <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/massivelys-dust-514-launch-impressions/">ended its testing earlier this week</a>, meaning that you can go be obliterated by an orbital strike <em>right now</em> if you own a PS3.<br />
<br />
Elsewhere in the testing world, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Anno-Online/">Anno Online</a></em> quietly went into open beta (keep an eye out for our own <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/beau-hindman">Beau Hindman</a>'s look at the game later this month). There are games <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/vostok-gearing-up-for-survarium-alpha-invites/">preparing for a beta</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/16/ea-to-publish-new-dawngate-moba/">in the future</a>, as well, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/unicorn-poop-beer-cans-and-housing-dungeons-wildstars-jeremy/">more information</a> about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/16/the-elder-scrolls-online-wants-you-to-explore-everywhere/">popular titles</a> still in beta. It's been a quiet week otherwise.<br />
<br />

<em><a href="http://www.elderscrollsonline.com">The Elder Scrolls Online's</a></em> Tamriel hosts many races that are generally segregated from each other. Nords of Skyrim usually stick to their northern frosty mountains. Argonians settle in their Black Marsh. Khajiit rest in Elsweyr. But we know from playing other Elder Scrolls games that individuals of all races most definitely move around the map, mostly adventurers like our possible <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-elder-scrolls-online/"><em>TESO</em></a> characters. It is very possible from a canon perspective that my Redguard will wander through Morrowind. Unlike other faction-based MMOs, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-elder-scrolls-online/"><em>TESO</em></a> has an interesting plan for those players with wanderlust.<br />
<br />
For today's column, I've found a community member who explains some of the implications of factional divides for us. I'm also interested in how you will personally handle some of these factional issues.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/17/tamriel-infinium-elder-scrolls-onlines-factional-divides/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tamriel Infinium: Elder Scrolls Online's factional divides</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/17/tamriel-infinium-elder-scrolls-onlines-factional-divides/">Tamriel Infinium: Elder Scrolls Online's factional divides</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 17 May 2013 14:00:00 EST. I was <em>this</em> close to saving myself a lot of time by finishing this article with only a few simple words: Why do I play <a href="https://www.planetside2.com"><em>PlanetSide 2</em></a>? Because it's <em>fun</em>. I'm pretty sure my boss would want me to expand on it just a bit, however, but let me drive those three words home: <em>Because it's fun</em>. I think we are all familiar with the word "fun," but it's something that we really don't hear enough about in MMOs. I don't think we play MMOs mainly because they're fun; I think we play them because they pull out other emotions in us, emotions like wonder or awe. They might help fill in social needs that are sometimes hard to fill out in real life. These are all positive and worthy reactions, but they're different from sheer fun.<br />
<br />
I have oodles of fun in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside-2/"><em>PlanetSide 2</em></a>. Gobs of it. Barrels of fun. The fun is powerful in this one. You get the point. <em>PlanetSide 2</em> actually makes me laugh to myself, makes me yell at the screen -- you know, those noises you hear from someone who is having a blast. Of course, there are a few other reasons I play <em>PlanetSide 2</em> as well, so I'll fill you in on those.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/17/why-i-play-planetside-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Why I Play: PlanetSide 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/17/why-i-play-planetside-2/">Why I Play: PlanetSide 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 17 May 2013 11:00:00 EST. I've recently written about what <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/the-soapbox-mmos-are-to-kids-what-muds-are-to-us/">the MMO future might look like</a>, but in case you haven't read that piece yet, I can sum it up for you. Essentially I see the new generation being so used to gaming and communicating on portable yet powerful devices that the sit-down keyboard and mouse setup might very well be doomed. Even major PC manufacturers and sellers are noticing the trend. Take a visit <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/tablets">to your local Gamestop</a> or equivalent game shop and you will notice that the chains have started to sell tablets as well.<br />
<br />
All of this tablet gaming might wound the current style of MMOs. I suspect that within the next decade or two it will all come full circle back to massive three-dimensional worlds on tech that becomes even more powerful and common, so we have to look at what the mobile market can do currently to keep MMOs in the lineup.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/17/mmobility-what-needs-to-happen-to-make-the-mobile-market-shine/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MMObility: What needs to happen to make the mobile market shine</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/17/mmobility-what-needs-to-happen-to-make-the-mobile-market-shine/">MMObility: What needs to happen to make the mobile market shine</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 17 May 2013 09:00:00 EST. With early access to <em><a href="https://marvelheroes.com">Marvel Heroes</a></em> coming on May 28th and the actual launch a few days later on June 4th, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gazillion-entertainment">Gazillion</a> team is on super-high alert. CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/david-brevik">David Brevik</a> talked with us about the final additions that the team is putting in place, saying that most of the features are complete at this point.<br />
<br />
Brevik most wanted to talk about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/marvel-heroes/"><em>Marvel Heroes'</em></a> endgame. Interestingly enough, the main PvE story will take your character only about halfway to the level 60 cap. After that, Gazillion expects players to fully rely on a robust endgame to finish the journey.<br />
<br />
The endgame is made up of three primary PvE activities (in addition to PvP): daily missions, group challenges, and survival challenges. Daily missions, which can be soloed or done in a group, are unlocked in a chain. The five-man group challenges only have a single entry at this point, although there are several variations on that challenge. Then the survival challenges can take groups of 10 to 15 players and pit them against waves of increasingly difficult foes. Difficulty for these wave battles can be lowered by grabbing shards and defeating enemies, and depending on how well your team performs, the boss could be a pushover or insanely tough. Gazillion is placing a premium on randomness and variety to keep things fresh, so don't expect all similar-looking mobs to actually be the same!<br />
<br />
Read on for all of the last-minute changes that players will encounter when they take on their superhero personae next month!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/16/marvel-heroes-prepares-for-the-end-at-the-beginning/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Marvel Heroes prepares for the end at the beginning</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/16/marvel-heroes-prepares-for-the-end-at-the-beginning/">Marvel Heroes prepares for the end at the beginning</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 16 May 2013 16:00:00 EST. When I was a kid, I loved the Red Sox, but I was dying to get a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball cap. It's not that I was a fan of the team; I just loved the unusual look of the hat, with its pillbox shape, gold stripes, and most importantly, rows and rows of gold stars. Those stars were called Stargell stars and were the creative genius of Hall of Famer Willie Stargell.<br />
<br />
It might seem strange to be talking baseball in a guild column, but those Stargell stars played a key role in the Pirates' success, and they serve as a great example of successful guild management. Can a little embroidered star really make a difference? Let's take a look in this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-guild-counsel/">Guild Counsel</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/16/the-guild-counsel-how-stargell-stars-can-help-your-guild/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Guild Counsel: How Stargell stars can help your guild</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/16/the-guild-counsel-how-stargell-stars-can-help-your-guild/">The Guild Counsel: How Stargell stars can help your guild</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 16 May 2013 13:00:00 EST. I'm always looking for things to teach players in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-Summoners-Guidebook/">the Summoner's Guidebook</a>. We have, however, covered a lot of the low hanging fruit in one way or another. In <a href="http://www.leagueoflegends.com"><em>League of Legends</em></a>, and virtually every other asymmetric competitive game, matchup knowledge comprises the huge bulk of information that is truly useful to read about. This week was originally going to be a counter-Ryze guide, but then I decided to cover a broader topic to help reach more people.<br />
<br />
I don't really like discussing specific character matchups largely because the character you're using matters almost as much as your opponent's. What does Ryze do against Kassadin in lane, for instance? The answer is not a whole lot if the Kassadin is decent. I could write a counter-Kassadin guide, but a lot of it wouldn't be usable by Ryze. Instead, this week we'll discuss how to think about the opponent's kit and develop a strategy to win on your own (or at least survive).<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/16/the-summoners-guidebook-teaching-ourselves-lol-matchups/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Summoner's Guidebook: Teaching ourselves LoL matchups</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/16/the-summoners-guidebook-teaching-ourselves-lol-matchups/">The Summoner's Guidebook: Teaching ourselves LoL matchups</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 16 May 2013 11:00:00 EST. Can you remember your first MMO buying experience? What series of events led to your interest in massively multiplayer gaming? What made you finally accept that paying monthly for a game is a thing that's OK? Or did you wade through countless free-to-play games before finding one that suited you?<br />
<br />
As the guys and gals you turn to each day for your MMOs news, the team at Massively has a solid history with this genre. So I dug a bit deeper to get those stories from a few members of the team. Feel free to leave your own MMO origins story in the comments below as you enjoy our own after the jump.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/16/the-think-tank-what-got-you-started-in-mmos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Think Tank: What got you started in MMOs?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/16/the-think-tank-what-got-you-started-in-mmos/">The Think Tank: What got you started in MMOs?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 16 May 2013 10:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/MUD-May/">MUD May</a> has been a blast so far, but I won't lie to you and say that I hope to even make a dent in the decades-old history of many of these titles. I decided instead to use some examples from my favorite MUDs that I have come across over the last couple of years. It's admittedly been a challenge to think about what to cover. Do I cover the communities? The in-game mechanics? The publishers?<br />
<br />
This week I decided to attempt to kill several birds with a handful of stones (and questions) and snagged <a href="http://www.play.net/corporate/">Simutronics</a> Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-latham/">Eric Latham</a> for an video interview. Simutronics has been in the business for 26 years, and the publisher makes my favorite MUD, <a href="http://www.play.net/gs4/"><em>Gemstone IV</em></a>. Latham has been with the company for 15 of those years! Technically I am using the interview and video as part of my <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rise-and-shiny/">Rise and Shiny</a> series, but the questions and answers are more relevant to the general topic of MUDs. You might see it now as well as later, but it will hopefully provide some insight into the world of making MUDs.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/free-for-all-celebrating-mud-may-with-gemstone-iv/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Free for All: Celebrating MUD May with Gemstone IV</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/free-for-all-celebrating-mud-may-with-gemstone-iv/">Free for All: Celebrating MUD May with Gemstone IV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 15 May 2013 21:00:00 EST. I have to begin this week's column with a disclaimer: I am not a fan of Facebook, and I'm even less a fan of Facebook games. The only one I found enjoyable was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ian-bogost/">Ian Bogost's</a> <a href="https://apps.facebook.com/cowclicker/"><em>Cow Clicker</em></a> because it was a giant middle finger to the bottom-feeding practices so commonly found in Facebook Villes.<br />
<br />
But when I got a Google alert in my inbox about the world's first family-friendly 3-D MMO for Facebook, I had to head back to the blue-and-white wasteland of Facebook and see it firsthand. Could it be that the era of isometric views and mindless clicking is finally over? Have we finally moved on from agriculturally themed games? I decided to check out <a href="http://worldoftrinketz.com"><em>World of Trinketz</em></a> to seek some answers.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/mmo-family-first-impressions-of-world-of-trinketz/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MMO Family: First Impressions of World of Trinketz</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/mmo-family-first-impressions-of-world-of-trinketz/">MMO Family: First Impressions of World of Trinketz</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 15 May 2013 20:00:00 EST. Man up MJ, you said. Forsake the fetters of safety and wander the wilds of the world. Yes, folks, for the next phase of our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/choose-my-adventure-mj-guthrie/"><em>Choose My Adventure</em></a> project, you directed me to leave the confines of the starting cities and surrounding lands to explore and harvest in the unprotected areas in <em><a href="http://www.darkfallonline.com/">Darkfall Unholy Wars</a></em>. That, and get familiar with the workbench for crafting. So said you all, and so I did.<br />

I ran little Emey Brokenclaw beyond the bounds of the safe zones and introduced her to the vast lands stretching across Agon. I enjoyed some exciting experiences as well as learned quite a few things during that journey, though not necessarily what you'd expect.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/choose-my-adventure-darkfall-unholy-wars/">Choose My Adventure: Darkfall Unholy Wars</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/choose-my-adventure-darkfall-unholy-wars/#5879813"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/c1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/choose-my-adventure-darkfall-unholy-wars/#5879817"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/c5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/choose-my-adventure-darkfall-unholy-wars/#5879814"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/c2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/choose-my-adventure-darkfall-unholy-wars/#5879818"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/c6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/choose-my-adventure-darkfall-unholy-wars/#5879815"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/c3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/choose-my-adventure-beyond-the-walls-of-safety-in-darkfall/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure:  Beyond the walls of safety in Darkfall</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/choose-my-adventure-beyond-the-walls-of-safety-in-darkfall/">Choose My Adventure:  Beyond the walls of safety in Darkfall</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 15 May 2013 16:00:00 EST. "This is going to be the best game most of us have built in our lives," <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Carbine-Studios/">Carbine Studios</a> Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jeremy-Gaffney/">Jeremy Gaffney</a> said bluntly.<br />
<br />
The game in question, of course, is <a href="http://www.wildstar-online.com/en/"><em>WildStar</em></a>, and it represents Gaffney's 10th or so trip through the beta development chute on the way to release. There's an undeniable note of pride and calm confidence in his voice as he talks about the baby that's growing inside Carbine's womb right now, and he was definitely not shy in opening up about all of the decisions and work the team's made as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/wildstar/"><em>WildStar</em></a> heads into its second trimester... er, closed beta test.<br />
<br />
Before that, however, Gaffney provided a recap of the first closed beta test. He said that it was pretty limited, with only 2,000 players testing out the lowbie Exile zones. The team moved some of the elder game content down in level so that people could test it out, and developers spent some time doing impromptu Q&amp;A sessions with players in the field. As a result, Carbine is ready to shift over to the Dominion side and greatly expand the beta in size and content. Read on for the full scoop on what the next step will entail.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/unicorn-poop-beer-cans-and-housing-dungeons-wildstars-jeremy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Unicorn poop, beer cans, and housing dungeons: WildStar's Jeremy Gaffney preps us for closed beta 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/unicorn-poop-beer-cans-and-housing-dungeons-wildstars-jeremy/">Unicorn poop, beer cans, and housing dungeons: WildStar's Jeremy Gaffney preps us for closed beta 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 15 May 2013 15:00:00 EST. It's hard to be a fan of <a href="http://www.champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> right now. The game has not been in a good state for pretty much any of its life cycle, but as I've discussed previously, its woes have really come into focus lately. It's been a long time since the game really sat down and advanced any sort of story, and it's been even longer since the game offered players something new in the endgame. When <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> has two other games with lots of ambition and promise, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Champions-Online/">Champions Online</a></em> is left looking like the unwanted sibling.<br />
<br />
Part of the problem is the fact that <em>CO</em> currently has a skeleton crew working on it and a minimal budget. I suspect (without having hard numbers) that it's at the same sort of uneasy place as <a href="https://www.vanguardthegame.com/"><em>Vanguard</em></a> was for a long while -- making just enough money to justify its continued operation while not making enough money for additional development staff. So with all of that in place, what can the game do to prop itself up a bit more without requiring a huge infusion of additional money? How can <em>Champions Online</em> get its act back together?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/a-mild-mannered-reporter-how-champions-online-could-get-its-gro/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Mild-Mannered Reporter: How Champions Online could get its groove back</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/a-mild-mannered-reporter-how-champions-online-could-get-its-gro/">A Mild-Mannered Reporter: How Champions Online could get its groove back</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 15 May 2013 13:00:00 EST. Playing <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE</em></a> on my couch is bizarre. I know, technically it's called <a href="http://www.dust514.com"><em>DUST 514</em></a>, but let's be serious. <em>DUST</em> is basically the beginnings of a massive <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> expansion if you subscribe to the notion that <em>EVE</em> is a virtual world as opposed to merely a strategy game featuring internet spaceships and internet drama.<br />
<br />
I've played <em>EVE</em> in some strange places prior to this. In an airport terminal, for example. On my toilet, even (yes, nature occasionally calls in the middle of a fleet fight and thank God for laptops). But <em>DUST</em> marks the first -- OK, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/07/the-firing-line-dust-514-beta-impressions/">technically the second</a> -- time I've ever played in New Eden with a controller.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/massivelys-dust-514-launch-impressions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's DUST 514 launch impressions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/massivelys-dust-514-launch-impressions/">Massively's DUST 514 launch impressions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 15 May 2013 11:00:00 EST. I've had a strange start with <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com"><em>Neverwinter</em></a>, to be honest. While I did get in on the 25th with the early-early crowd, shortly thereafter I had to boogie on off to a vacation that canceled out eight days of soft launch gaming time. So even though I got an early start, I'm probably behind many of you -- even those who started on the 30th.<br />
<br />
That's OK; I'm not in a rush. I'm not the type to get into a speed race or feel the compulsion to become an instant expert by the end of week one. My experience so far has been feeling out what <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> has to offer, mostly by going through the solo quest line, participating in skirmishes, and queuing up for dungeon runs when time permits. And I'm enjoying myself so far, although I still have that "slightly lost" feeling that comes with exploring a brand-new MMO. I need to learn how to create Foundry missions and I haven't even touched professions yet.<br />
<br />
Maybe you're like me. Maybe you assume that everyone already knows the ins and outs of the game as though he's been playing it for years, while you're an ignorant noob wandering the streets. I don't think you're alone if that's the case, and to help both you and me out, I've done some research to find the top 14 most helpful threads, sites, and articles that all fledgling <em>Neverwinter</em> adventurers should at least skim over.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/neverwinter-days-the-14-guides-you-need-to-read/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Neverwinter Days: The 14 guides you need to read</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/neverwinter-days-the-14-guides-you-need-to-read/">Neverwinter Days: The 14 guides you need to read</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 15 May 2013 10:00:00 EST. <a href="https://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>'s latest DLC, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/origin-crisis">Origin Crisis</a>, allows players to fill the shoes of some of their favorite -- and not so favorite -- heroes and villains and fight to keep reality as it is. Thanks to <a href="https://www.dcuniverseonline.com/news/archive.vm?id=217&amp;month=current&amp;locale=en_US">yesterday's update</a>, players will actually be traveling through time in order to stop a chain of events that might result in entirely new universes and timelines. You'll be bamming and powing your way through content in the hopes that history remains intact.<br />
<br />
We sat down with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jens-andersen/">Jens Andersen</a>, Creative Director of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>, to discuss this special DLC, a pack that has been in planning since the game's conception.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/a-tour-of-dc-universe-onlines-new-origin-crisis-dlc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A tour of DC Universe Online's new Origin Crisis DLC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/a-tour-of-dc-universe-onlines-new-origin-crisis-dlc/">A tour of DC Universe Online's new Origin Crisis DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 15 May 2013 09:00:00 EST. First of all, I wish my first name were a cool animal. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bear-mccreary">Bear McCreary</a> has that on me, so it seems unfair that he's also a geek icon for his work on several beloved TV series (Battlestar Galactica, Eureka, The Walking Dead). And now the guy is composing the soundtrack of one of this spring's hottest MMOs? Where did I go wrong with my life?<br />
<br />
Before I go and change my name to Sugar Glider Olivetti, I guess it's only fair that I put a lid on my hurt ego to give <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/defiance/"><em>Defiance's</em></a> score a fair listen. McCreary was tapped to create the music for both the MMO and the TV series, giving the crossover project a unified sound.<br />
<br />
"I had to make sure that players could hang out in one area for long stretches of time without getting bored by repetitive music," <a href="http://www.bearmccreary.com/#blog/albums/defiance-video-game/">McCreary wrote on his blog</a>. "As a result, melody plays less of a role throughout many of these cues. The real stars of this music are the texture and colors."<br />
<br />
Music has texture <em>and </em>colors? If Bear says it, then it must be. Let's dive in!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/jukebox-heroes-defiances-soundtrack/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Jukebox Heroes: Defiance's soundtrack</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/jukebox-heroes-defiances-soundtrack/">Jukebox Heroes: Defiance's soundtrack</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 14 May 2013 21:00:00 EST. <div>It's a hard thing to admit when you're wrong. But I admit that I was wrong about <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> Update 2.1: Customization. Even as late as last night on <a href="http://www.gamebreaker.tv/video-game-shows/the-republic-swtor-show/swtor-player-numbers-republic-137/">The Republic</a>, I believed that things like the new Appearance Designer might not cost players Cartel Coins to use, but now that the update has arrived, I admit that is certainly not the case. Had I known that it would cost CCs to so much as <em>use</em> the Appearance Designer, I would be in the camp of players upset about this update containing only Cartel items. If you define an expansion or DLC as additional content that costs money, then that is exactly what this update is.</div>
<br />
I'm not against <a href="http://bioware.com">BioWare</a> making money, and to be completely honest, I'm not upset about the company making money on many of these items. Perhaps through my own misunderstanding, I feel a bit cheated with the update. Let me break down the Update 2.1 items for us. I'll point out the good and the bad, and maybe you will understand my perspective, even if you don't agree.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/hyperspace-beacon-swtors-customization-cash-kitty/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: SWTOR's customization cash kitty</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/hyperspace-beacon-swtors-customization-cash-kitty/">Hyperspace Beacon: SWTOR's customization cash kitty</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 14 May 2013 18:30:00 EST. I love MUDs. When I go through a several-hour long MUD session, I feel as if I took part in a greater story, and most of the fun was not based on stats or gear. MUDs let me escape into a world because they are about story first. I think I'm pretty rare, though. I can't find many other writers who seem to write about MUDs unless they are referencing them like some sort of relic from the past. The truth is that MUDs are still being loved, played, and enjoyed by thousands. Covering MUDs is as important as covering any other MMO. They're still part of the bigger picture.<br />
<br />
I'm sure many of you reading this now could not care less about MUDs. You might have played one years ago, but generally they are seen as the cute elderly citizens of MMOdom. That's cool if that's how you feel, but now think about this: The new generation, kids between 13 and 20 years old, will look at many of our large PCs and 20 gig MMOs the same way modern gamers look at MUDs.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/the-soapbox-mmos-are-to-kids-what-muds-are-to-us/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Soapbox: MMOs are to kids what MUDs are to us</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/the-soapbox-mmos-are-to-kids-what-muds-are-to-us/">The Soapbox: MMOs are to kids what MUDs are to us</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 14 May 2013 16:00:00 EST. Sometimes it's all about the little details in MMOs: How a character moves. How to create billions in gold due to a duping exploit. What goodies the collector's edition will include. Why losing 1.3 million subscribers is "no biggie." And we're nothing if not about the details on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Massively-Speaking/">Massively Speaking</a>! Listen to Bree and Justin fact-check in real-time, racing against the clock to stop a terrorist plot to bring down auction houses everywhere!<br />

As is no secret, I'm something of an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/altoholic/">altoholic</a>. This is the case in pretty much every game I play that allows for that sort of thing. If I <em>can </em>make multiple characters, I <em>will</em>.<br />
<br />
While it's not solely responsible for the longevity of my involvement in MMOs, it sure doesn't hurt. I'm presently sitting at four max characters in <a href="https://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars </em>2</a>. That'll turn into five fairly soon, and then I've got plans for another six or seven after that. (For those of you keeping score at home, that <em>does </em>involve having more than one max-level character of the same profession. It's a disease.)<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/flameseeker-chronicles-the-matter-of-alts-in-guild-wars-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Flameseeker Chronicles: The matter of alts in Guild Wars 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/flameseeker-chronicles-the-matter-of-alts-in-guild-wars-2/">Flameseeker Chronicles: The matter of alts in Guild Wars 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 14 May 2013 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://diablo3.com"><em>Diablo III</em></a> was hit with yet another exploit this week as players discovered a way to duplicate gold via a bug in the auction house. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> responded by shutting down the auction house but did not perform a server rollback to reverse the damage. <em><a href="http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/">Star Citizen</a></em> clarified its stance on the lifetime insurance available to veteran backers amidst debate over whether it gives early adopters an unfair advantage over other players. <a href="http://pathofexile.com"><em>Path of Exile</em></a> also released a new Letters of Wraeclast lore feature in its latest update, and <a href="http://mwomercs.com/"><em>MechWarrior Online</em></a>'s update 15 added a new Misery mech.<br />

Now that <em><a href="http://startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online's</a></em> expansion, <em><a href="http://sto.perfectworld.com/legacyofromulus">The Legacy of Romulus</a></em> has moved into open beta on the Tribble test server, I think it's high time I wrote about one of the biggest changes the game has ever seen. It's not just about what will occur in the game's story; it's <em>how</em> the story is being told.<br />
<br />
Players who create a Romulan faction character when <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/">Star Trek Online</a></em> launches the expansion on May 21st will experience something that simply hasn't been seen before in the game. Fair warning: I'll be writing a fair amount about what happens within the first dozen levels of gameplay, so if you're holding out to be surprised, know that there are spoilers after the jump!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/13/captains-log-story-takes-center-stage-in-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Story takes center stage in Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/13/captains-log-story-takes-center-stage-in-star-trek-online/">Captain's Log: Story takes center stage in Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 13 May 2013 19:00:00 EST. For all those who've been trying so hard to predict gloom and doom for <em><a href="http://www.thesecretworld.com/">The Secret World</a></em>, I say <em>Nyeh nyeh</em> because the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/30/the-secret-worlds-issue-7-goes-007/">April producer's letter</a> announcing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/30/the-secret-worlds-issue-7-goes-007/">Issue #7</a> pretty much flies in the face of all your it's-gonna-die whimperings. In fact, I can't believe we still hear them because <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world">TSW</a></em> just keeps getting better and better. Where's the duct tape when you need it...<br />
<br />
While it's true we don't have monthly updates anymore (and that's totally understandable, given the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/28/chaos-theory-reacting-to-tsws-restructuring-and-relocation/">restructuring</a> that devs certainly couldn't predict), <em>Secret World</em> fans are still getting frequent, and more importantly extremely fun, updates. Just look at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/The-Vanishing-of-Tyler-Freeborn/"><em>The Vanishing of Tyler Freeborn</em></a> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/The-Last-Train-to-Cairo/">The Last Train to Cairo</a></em>; both of these issues brought interesting new storylines and a decent helping of new features. Some even say these updates introduced the best content so far. With that track record, who can't help but be totally psyched for the upcoming Issue #7?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/13/chaos-theory-the-secret-world-shaken-not-stirred/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chaos Theory: The Secret World shaken, not stirred</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/13/chaos-theory-the-secret-world-shaken-not-stirred/">Chaos Theory: The Secret World shaken, not stirred</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 13 May 2013 15:00:00 EST.
