One of the scariest games I ever played has to be the original <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Hill"><em>Silent Hill</em></a>. A nearly empty town shrouded with fog and featuring one of the most terrifying elementary schools ever devised? Yes, this is why I didn't sleep much in 1999. So when I started to get flashbacks as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/fernando-paiz/">Fernando Paiz</a> took me through the creepy alleyways of <a href="http://www.ddo.com/"><em>Dungeon and Dragons Online's</em></a> upcoming update, I had to excuse myself and run around the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-east/">PAX East</a> show floor for a few minutes while shrieking like a tormented cat.<br />
<br />
OK, it wasn't that frightening, but I definitely was getting a <em>Silent Hill</em> vibe from the latest adventure pack that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine/">Turbine</a> has crafted for the game. Coming "soon" (TM, all rights reserved, void in Utah and the Yukon Territories), <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dungeons-and-dragons-online">DDO's</a></em> Update 9 promises to bring a wide assortment of lavish treats to a hungry populace. At the center of it is a level 15 quest chain that centers around mysterious abductions, a skittish population, and nightmares made flesh.<br />
<br />
Hit the jump as I recall my brush with certain death in these adventures and relate the other jewels of Update 9!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/14/pax-east-2011-stalking-through-ddos-update-9/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX East 2011: Stalking through DDO's Update 9</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/14/pax-east-2011-stalking-through-ddos-update-9/">PAX East 2011: Stalking through DDO's Update 9</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 14 Mar 2011 21:00:00 EST. Who are you whippersnappers? Get off my lawn or I'll blast ye into kingdom come! Shoo!<br />
<br />
I mean, howdy! Sorry, I got a little startled there. We just found out this morning that Rubi, your faithful <a href="http://www.ddo.com/"><em>DDO</em></a> columnist, was captured by a beholder and locked away in a level 20 dungeon. While the Massively <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dungeons-and-dragons-online/">DDO</a> </em>guild, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/onedawesome/">OnedAwesome</a>, faithfully levels up in a rescue attempt (every Wednesday night, 9pm eastern/8pm central!), I've been drafted to keep the column going until victory is assured.<br />
<br />
Considering that a vast majority of my personal <em>DDO </em>resume is confined to levels 1 through 10, I have a soft spot for the newbie experience. And seeing how many fledgling dungeoneers are flocking to <em>DDO </em>these days, I figured I'd go back to the beginning to walk new players through the first week of the game. For you veterans out there, this would be a great time to (a) point out how much I say is completely wrong, and (b) offer up your own tips and advice in the comments section.<br />
<br />
Today, let's start with one of the most vital decisions you'll ever make in the game: rolling a character. Hit the jump and let's hope for all 20s!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/16/exploring-eberron-rolling-the-right-character-for-you/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Exploring Eberron: Rolling the right character for you</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/16/exploring-eberron-rolling-the-right-character-for-you/">Exploring Eberron: Rolling the right character for you</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 16 Jul 2010 16:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/26/breaking-turbine-sues-atari-over-dungeons-and-dragons-online/">Turbine has been a busy bee lately</a> when it comes to <em><a href="http://www.ddo.com">DDO Unlimited</a></em> (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/16/ddo-unlimited-solidifies-its-sept-9th-launch/">launching September 9th</a>) but we're pretty okay with that since the game is a whole lot of fun. Likewise, these new screens featuring the new Favored Soul class and add-on adventure pack, Reaver's Reach, are pretty entertaining. Screens from this particular developer have always been pretty great, and yet Turbine has stepped up their game here.<br /><br />So even if you don't plan on playing <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dungeons-and-dragons-online">DDO Unlimited</a></em> too much, we highly recommend that you check these babies out. If you're looking to kill some time, especially, because they're oh-so shiny and pretty. It's so distracting that you could almost forget what you were, uh... what were we saying again?<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dungeons-and-dragons-online-unlimited/">Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online: Unlimited</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dungeons-and-dragons-online-unlimited/#4597070"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/11/ddo1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dungeons-and-dragons-online-unlimited/#4597071"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/11/ddo2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dungeons-and-dragons-online-unlimited/#2240047"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/08/12_favored_soul_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dungeons-and-dragons-online-unlimited/#2240048"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/08/15_favored_soul_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dungeons-and-dragons-online-unlimited/#2240049"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/08/18_favored_soul_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/27/ddo-unlimiteds-favored-soul-and-reaver-s-reach-screens/">DDO Unlimited's Favored Soul and Reaver's Reach screens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 27 Aug 2009 20:00:00 EST. Love can sometimes be a fickle thing, but I'm pretty sure that I love what <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Turbine/">Turbine</a> has done with the DDO Store in <em><a href="http://www.ddo.com">Dungeons and Dragons Online Unlimited</a></em>. I'll admit that initially I was a little concerned with the concept of an in-game store, but after playing with it at bit and asking some questions my fears have pretty much melted away.<br /><br />I was lucky enough to be given a developer tour of the <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Dungeons-and-Dragons-Online">Dungeons and Dragons Online Unlimited</a> beta last Friday, and had a thoroughly good time. The DDO Store is a streamlined and snappy experience. The store doesn't simply attempt to shove its wares onto the unsuspecting player. Instead, it attempts -- and largely succeeds -- in being a helpful, generally friendly addition to the game.<strong><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ddo-unlimited-tour/">DDO Unlimited Tour</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ddo-unlimited-tour/#2112661"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/screenshot00142_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ddo-unlimited-tour/#2112660"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/screenshot00141_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ddo-unlimited-tour/#2112659"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/screenshot00133_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ddo-unlimited-tour/#2112658"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/screenshot00129_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ddo-unlimited-tour/#2112657"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/screenshot00128_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /></strong><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/30/massivelys-ddo-unlimited-developer-tour/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's DDO Unlimited developer tour</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/30/massivelys-ddo-unlimited-developer-tour/">Massively's DDO Unlimited developer tour</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 30 Jun 2009 12:00:00 EST. Well, we can't say we exactly saw this one coming. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Turbine/">Turbine</a> has pulled back the curtain on some details for <em><a href="http://www.ddo.com/index.php">Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited</a></em>, namely the new class being added with the major business model shift. Although, we've also learned there'll be new combat updates and a return of Stormreach's marketplace, which was destroyed last year.<br /><br />As for the new class, it's been revealed to be the Favored Soul. According to Turbine's press release, <em>"Favored souls draw on divine magic to both heal and destroy. Like clerics, favored souls have access to powerful healing spells, but they are also more skilled with weapons than any other spell caster. Like sorcerers, they get a larger number of spell points than other spell casters and cannot freely switch spells at taverns or rest shrines."</em> So it sounds like we're dealing with a cross between a Cleric and a Sorcerer, which is pretty awesome actually. What sorts of weapons -- and screens of the class itself -- remains to be seen, sadly.<br /><br />Still, we <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/17/massively-speaking-episode-57-ddo-with-jerry-snook/">should have even more details</a> in the coming weeks and hopefully <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dungeons-and-dragons-online/">Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited</a></em> will launch sometime this summer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/ddo-eberron-unlimited-details-surface-new-class-revealed/">DDO: Eberron Unlimited details surface, new class revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 24 Jun 2009 16:30:00 EST.
