Those of you who haven't been in Star Trek Online in a while will be happy to know there was a new event system put into place after the advent of A Call to Arms. The event calendar appears the moment a player clicks on his Starfleet delta to hail Starfleet and contains a neatly reorganized mission menu as well as an hourly listing of special daily events in which players can participate. Missions range from the KDF Mirror Universe and the new Borg Invasion of Defera to the Multiphasic Event in which players who farm anomalies for crafting are granted extra rewards during the time period in question. The new event system is very helpful to those players who get satisfaction from a specific type of play as they are able to obtain extra rewards for undertaking that play during the scheduled times.

Of course, events aren't the only way to spend your STO time during this content drought, and this New Year's Eve edition of the Captain's Log has a few other ideas for you...
Continue reading Captain's Log: Facing a content drought? Few things impress me about EVE Online's community more than the incredible videos, artwork and fiction created by players. For the role-playing and fiction-writing communities, the game's continually-updated prime fiction acts as a canvas onto which new stories can be blended. Long-time EVE blogger Kirith Kodachi over at Inner Sanctum of the Ninveah has been an avid fiction-writer and contributor to EVE Tribune, producing several articles based on in-character technical overviews of EVE ships.

Over the past two years, Kirith has been teaming up with artists and volunteer writers to collaborate on creating a more comprehensive collection of these articles. Written in the style of fictional ship manuals and presented as technical briefings interspersed with historical information, the completed project (dubbed "Project Athena") features full articles on 23 ships and their Tech 2 counterparts. Although the historical information and technical specifications have been invented by Kirith and his contributors, he's done his best to stick as closely as possible to the official EVE prime fiction. At 64 MB, the huge PDF file isn't a small download, but for role-players or fans of EVE fiction it's definitely worth a look.
EVE blogger unveils Project Athena, a collection of fictional ship manuals originally appeared on Massively on Sun, 13 Jun 2010 12:00:00 EST. Maybe it's just us, but the drone hives we keep seeing are getting even more wicked-looking; giant, dark, amorphous structures looming in the depths of space. However, along with today's gorgeous EVE Online screenshot, we also have a tremendously cool short story to go with it from Ryl'avin Redwense! As it's a bit long, we'll be placing part of it behind the cut rather than editing it. If you'd like to send in a short story of your own to go with your screenshot, email it to us at oneshots [AT] massively [DOT] com. Now, on with today's excellent EVE Online tale from our very talented reader!

"Warp drive, active." Ryl'avin Redwense lost count of the times she had heard that from the NeoCom.

It was her second day out of Federation space, and the bridge crew aboard the Swiftwind let out a collective gasp as the warp bubble collapsed. This time, she counted.

There were those few warps you did remember.

This breaking news could impact every World of Warcraft lore aficionado and record keeper. The goblin writers at the Gadgetzan Times went on strike today over their contractual residuals in the flourishing new media market. "Oh noez," we also find this unacceptable. To help fill the blank pages the editor-in-chief wants to bring new promising writers on board and is now accepting submissions from all adventures across Azeroth and Outland.

So you live in the city that never sleeps. No, not Las Vegas. Or New York. You "live" in the City of Heroes. You're big, bad and altogether mean. But can you write or draw? If so... head on over to the Fan Submissions web page, read up on all the legal mumbo jumbo about how the stuff you submit no longer belongs to you once it's submitted... yadda yadda yadda.

If you're game (pardon the pun)... get crackin' and let the Fanzine showcase your dazzling work. The deadline for submissions is February 11th, so get your pen stroke on!

I can't quite remember how, but it got me thinking about how we could create our own content in any game we might play, not just WoW. I came up with two answers - Role Playing and Fan Fiction. There are better writers than I who know more about Role Playing, and I'll not embarrass myself by trying, so I'd like to speak about Fan Fiction today.

Like many other people out there, some of the experiences I've had in MMOs have been just as exciting, frustrating and rewarding as some offline ones. Much of my time away from the computer is spent planning how best to maximise the time I'll be spending online, and how best to wring every last bit of content out of my experiences in-game. For a lot of players, not matter how immersive the game experience is, it's simply not enough, and the static nature of a game's story frustrates them to the point where they are driven to expand on it themselves. Or perhaps they simply don't want to be restricted to the game mechanics to tell their character's story.
Continue reading Behind the Curtain: Making your own lore with Fan Fiction

Behind the Curtain: Making your own lore with Fan Fiction originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 06 Dec 2007 11:00:00 EST.
