There are varying schools of thought on interacting with your community in public, but the two main ones consist of either answering every question or giving the silent treatment. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a> was notorious at one time for not responding to any community feedback in public, presumably to keep the trolls at bay, but that studio's opened up considerably in the last few years.<br />
<br />
On the other end of that spectrum is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ArenaNet/">ArenaNet</a>, whose reps answer just about every single question they get on Twitter. This makes for an open line of communication with fans but seems to be ineffective when the same questions are being asked and answered multiple times a day.<br />
<br />
So where do you stand on the issue? Do you think a simple FAQ on the website should be referenced and a support team should answer questions privately, or do you think something like Twitter, Facebook, or even a Reddit Ask Me Anything is the best place to answer questions and address concerns from the community?<br />

HBO's Game of Thrones is getting the online gaming treatment for the second time in the space of a calendar year. First it was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bigpoint">Bigpoint's</a> free-to-play browser MMO, and now it's a Facebook game called <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/game-of-thrones-ascent"><em>Game of Thrones Ascent</em></a>, which is being developed by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/disruptor-beam">Disruptor Beam</a>, a social gaming company headed by former GamerDNA CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jon-radoff/">Jon Radoff</a>.<br />
<br />
The company says that players will "lead the life of a noble during the time of upheaval as portrayed in the books and the series thus experiencing a new type of game that unites both story and strategy."<br />
<br />
Precious little info is given on the title, including a release date, but we'll bring you the latest as it becomes available.<br />

It is not every day that a U.S. governor is the one to announce the launch window for an MMO, so savor the weirdness while you can: Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/rhode-island-governor-gives-38-studios-copernicus-mmo-a-june-20/">announced at a press conference</a> that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios</a> will be releasing code-name <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/project-copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a> next summer. "What I understand is Copernicus is June of '13," Chafee said. He also stated that he thought the financial deal was a "risky enterprise" from the start.<br />

38 Studios Founder and Chairman Curt Schilling <a href="http://bostonglobe.com/business/2012/05/18/facebook-curt-schilling-denies-paid-himself-back-with-money-thanks-supporters-ailing-studios-video-game-company/EnqdY2flmq0Bf55m4YvdRM/story.html">said on Facebook</a> that rumors of his using the state funds to repay his personal investment in the company was "not true." In a separate post, Schilling attempted to set an optimistic tone: "We will find a way, and the strength, to endure."<br />
<br />
We have been following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/rumor-38-studios-may-be-having-financial-trouble/">the financial turmoil</a> that 38 Studios is in following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/if-38-studios-goes-under-rhode-island-taxpayers-will-be-footing/">its default on paying back Rhode Island</a> for its $75 million loan. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a> continues to roll out the rewards for being well-liked this week. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> crossed the half-million Facebook like barrier, and as a result, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150859536394209&amp;set=a.135044094208.103264.114036714208&amp;type=1">the studio released a new epic piece of art</a> for its fans.<br />
<br />
The picture is of Destiny's Edge, the adventuring group that features so prominently in <em>Guild Wars 2</em>, facing a rather fearsome foe: The Shatterer. According to the Facebook page, this is actually an in-game screenshot that's been "embellished" by ArenaNet artist <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/daniel-dociu/">Daniel Dociu</a>. As with the other pictures that it has released, ArenaNet has made this image available as <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/arenanet/6945989372/sizes/l/in/photostream/">a high-resolution version</a> as well.<br />

It's hard to fathom how you can have "secret" societies when over a million new people know about them, but somehow we don't think <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom's</a> sweating the security breach. In fact, the studio seems quite proud of the fact that a million players have signed up to test <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world/"><em>The Secret World</em></a>. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/03/the-secret-war-draws-over-200-000-players-to-its-facebook-battle/">The Facebook tie-in</a> is also getting record views, with almost two million visits over the past few weeks.<br />
<br />
Senior Vice President <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Morten-Larssen/">Morten Larssen</a> sees this as a shining omen for a dark world: "Shattering our previous beta records gives us great hope for <em>The Secret World's</em> launch and its future. Combining this positive number with the excellent feedback we have received from both beta testers and the press that have played the game, make us very optimistic for a successful launch of <em>The Secret World</em>."<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/18/funcom-giving-away-in-game-prizes-studio-trips-via-the-secret-w/">Facebook prologue</a> to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world/"><em>The Secret World</em></a> is a sizable success, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/19/funcom-temporarily-takes-the-secret-world-facebook-tie-in-offlin/">even if it had a rocky beginning</a>. The studio reports that over 200,000 players have taken the side of one of the game's three factions and are supporting their side through this "<a href="http://secretwar.thesecretworld.com/">unique browser-based social experience</a>."<br />
<br />
Over the course of two weeks, participants have unleashed 50 million agents as part of the event, visited the site 1,200,000 times, and spent an average of 20 minutes each visit participating in the game. Since launching The Secret War, Funcom's added goals for the factions to work toward each week. The current prize is a Heart of Africa health talisman.<br />
<br />
Two-hundred thousand participants is a solid win for Senior Vice President <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/mslarssen">Morten Larssen</a>, who sees this as an excellent way to prepare players for the factional struggle of the MMO: "This conflict has always been a key driver for activity in our own community, and we are excited to see that more and more people are coming in to join the conflict from outside the community as well."<br />

I am a <em>huge</em> fan of social media. Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus -- it all makes sense to me and has shown to be a very useful tool in not only communicating with friends but finding new games, developers, and websites. My Twitter feed provides enough news and information that I can skip any standard media. I haven't watched a local newscast for a long, long time. On top of that, I can communicate with readers in real time, sharing photos and tidbits of cool.<br />
<br />
Has social media affected MMO gaming? It definitely has. Watch any smart developer's Twitter feed and you will see the community team interacting directly with players, answering questions, hosting contests, and helping players feel as though the developers are actual people. Social media has also changed how we connect to our games, MMO or not.<br />
<br />
All of this means that <em>everything</em> is social now. Going to the dentist? Share it with your friends. Defeated a boss monster on your Xbox? Tweet it. Just picked up that epic sword in <a href="http://darkageofcamelot.com/"><em>Dark Age of Camelot</em></a>? Post it to your Facebook. Heck, many MMOs now have a Twitter or Facebook option built right into the client. All of this instant connectivity is nice, but it's possible that the "massively" part of MMO will soon apply to any game. It's very possible that you really need a steady shot of Tyria a little earlier than that. Fortunately for you, there are options open as <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/guild-wars-2-on-the-social-media-front-4">the community team pushes interaction in a big way</a>. The game's Facebook page is <a href="http://www.facebook.com/GuildWars2/posts/10150725856759209">the center of a rather art-centric promotion</a>: As the page nears half a million Likes, the team is releasing a new piece of art for every 10,000 new fans.<br />

Not your cup of tea? That's all right, as the team has also set up <a href="http://pinterest.com/arenanetteam/">a Pinterest page</a> to show off the best game-related fan projects. There are also boards set up on the same page where you can show off screenshots of each race, whether you're opting for the diminutive Asura or the towering Norn. It's a good chance for everyone to get involved in the <em>Guild Wars 2</em> community before the weekend gets underway, even if it won't make the test start any faster.<br />

We had a chance to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/13/gdc-2012-gpotato-showcases-allods-aika-sevencore-and-eternal/">preview the game briefly at GDC</a>, and the team behind the game has stepped up promotions with the addition of <a href="http://eternalblade.gpotato.com/teaser">a new teaser site</a> for the game. The developers have also finalized the class lineup, but the classes aren't getting pages on the teaser site; instead, each class now has its own individual Facebook page.<br />

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, or in this case, 460,000 likes on Facebook. Reacting to the growing popularity of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> in its social media, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> has released a brand-new piece of gorgeous concept art for you to gawk at.<br />
<br />
The piece shows Norn Eir Stegalkin finding something hidden deep underwater. Eir is one of the five key heroes of Destiny's Edge, the retired adventuring group that plays a huge part in the game. As <em>Guild Wars 2</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/24/guild-wars-2-dives-head-first-into-underwater-combat/">will have a significant underwater portion</a>, this art is a good reminder that not all of the game's exploration and landmarks will take place out in the open air.<br />

There's something decidedly ironic about a conspiracy-laden game rife with (fictional) secrets and sensitive information taking to Facebook to advertise itself. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom's</a> new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em></a> MMO is doing just that, though, thanks to a tie-in game called The Secret War that kicked off last night.<br />
<br />
Docholidaymmo.com reports that the new Facebook game grants in-game prizes for <em>The Secret World</em> (in the form of cosmetic gear, potions, and starter weapons). Funcom is also giving away eight trips to its Montreal development studio as well as a chance to get your name embedded in <em>The Secret World's</em> retail client. Still not enough for you? How about chances to win access to the title's upcoming beta weekends?<br />
<br />
You'll need to head to the <a href="http://secretwar.thesecretworld.com/">official Secret War site</a> and link your Facebook account (or your fake Facebook account, according to the report). After you've done so, each of your Facebook friends who is playing the game will go into your pool of agents and may be assigned toward the ultimate goal of world domination.<br />

But it's one thing to read about all of the neat things that will be going on in a new raid and another thing entirely to actually see them. That's why the community team is <a href="http://www.facebook.com/RIFTgame/posts/220478124718932">hosting an official livestream of the new Infernal Dawn raid</a> that's getting released this week.<br />

The run will begin at 11:30 a.m. PDT, moving through the entirety of the raid and showing off all of the bosses without spoiling the fights themselves. The community team will also be explaining the lore behind the area and the bosses and answering community questions when possible. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/entropia-universe"><em>Entropia Universe</em></a> has always skirted the line between game and advertising scheme, and the latest evidence of this is a new social media program developed by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mindark">MindArk</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/socialtype">Socialtype</a> that aims to reward existing players for recruiting new ones.<br />
<br />
MMO recruitment drives are nothing new, but the kicker here is that the potential recruits can experience a slice of <em>Entropia</em> via their Facebook accounts. MindArk is using a software app called Bamboo to connect the MMO and Facebook portions of <em>Entropia</em>. Bamboo "turns your players into a highly-motivated marketing army," according to the <a href="http://www.socialtype.com/bamboo/index.html">app's website</a>. "Bamboo users become ambassadors. They earn points for promoting your game through their social network. Every action is incentivized."<br />
<br />
MindArk says that the <em>Entropia</em> atmosphere has been ported to the Facebook app via its UI, graphics, and lore. New users can also add to said lore via their own unique plots.<br />

With just over a month left until <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/diablo-iii"><em>Diablo III</em></a> is released, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard-entertainment">Blizzard</a> launched <a href="http://reveal.diablo3.com/en_US/">its new Darkness Falls, Heroes Rise minisite</a> to get people excited. Fans can enter an art contest with some big prizes or create a banner to unlock an exclusive in-game banner sigil that will never be given away outside this event. The site is one big social media campaign, with <a href="http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/blog/4012604/Darkness_Falls_Heroes_Rise-06_04_2012#blog">exclusive content that unlocks</a> when players share enough contest entries on Facebook and Twitter. Fansite <a href="http://www.diablofans.com/news/1143-diablo-iii-darkness-falls-heroes-rise-mini-site/">DiabloFans revealed</a> that the unlocks will include developer diaries, wallpapers and more. Once the share meter reaches 100%, a final epic unveiling will occur that Blizzard's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Bashiok/">Bashiok</a> says "is going to melt people's brain meats."<br />

When the site first launched, fans reported everything from PHP errors to lost connections and 404 pages. The site has since been stabilised but doesn't appear to be working as intended. The galleries are no longer updating, confirmation emails are not being sent for entries, and the unlock level hasn't budged from 0%. When <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ArenaNet/">ArenaNet</a> thanked <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars-2/">Guild Wars 2</a></em> beta applicants with a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/12/arenanet-thanks-potential-beta-testers-with-new-guild-wars-2-vid/">special video</a> earlier this week, the move was met with a surprising amount of angst-ridden complaining because the video was gated behind a "Like" button on Facebook. Some gamers just didn't want to sign up for Facebook just to see a video or resented the idea that the thank-you was really just a clever marketing trick to advertise the game to their friends.<br />
<br />
While complaining does seem a bit like looking a gift horse in the mouth (and it was easy enough to find a copy of the video on YouTube within five minutes anyway), I can still understand why some folks are irritated by the permeation of social media into every corner of the MMOsphere, from news sites like ours to clicking "Like" for free stuff to auto-Tweeting in-game accomplishments.<br />

As you probably have already ignored, the big news of the day is that the world's boats have all been lost due to mysterious boat-related circumstances. Unfortunately, as human beings are extremely stupid and easily thwarted, no one can remember how to build a boat, nor did anyone take any notes on how one <em>might</em> build a boat. There aren't even pieces of information about how boats work. Long story short, Australia is now completely on its own.<br />

It seems like ages ago, but back in July of 2010, <a href="http://blizzard.com">Blizzard</a> shook the MMO world with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/07/the-daily-grind-real-id-do-we-finally-have-our-wow-killer/">announcement of RealID</a>. You probably recall the firestorm, but the long and short of it is that Blizzard was planning to make all posts in the forums display each poster's real-life first and last name. The protests against it were so loud that Blizzard backed down from the move and life resumed as usual.<br />

The intend was to integrate social media into Blizzard games, particularly Facebook, but it became a huge can of worms because it forced everyone who wanted to post on the forums to reveal their true names. But social media is continuing to grow, and there are lots of ways that game companies have made use of it. 	Last month, the folks at <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> had a field day with the <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/guild-wars-2">Guild Wars 2</a></em> beta sign-ups, which garnered one million player sign-ups in the span of just over two days. Unfortunately, the beta is limited by the amount of available space, and not everyone who signed up will have the pleasure of vacationing in Tyria.<br />
	<br />
	With that in mind, the fine ladies and gentlemen at ArenaNet have released a brand-new video featuring exclusive footage to show their appreciation for the overwhelming interest in <em>GW2</em>. Sports MMOs haven't gotten off the ground as of yet, and whether their lack of mainstream success is due to design challenges or some other factor, they remain <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sports-mmo">obscure oddities</a> for the most part.<br />
<br />
Somewhat less obscure is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tecmo">Tecmo's</a> 1980s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/nintendo">Nintendo</a> series based on the National Football League. The aptly named <em>Tecmo Bowl</em> was a mainstay on Nintendo's first 8-bit console, and now a group of fans have helped assure that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gridiron-heroes"><em>Gridiron Heroes</em></a>, a new Facebook game inspired by the classic series, will in fact be made.<br />
<br />

Cyclops, aka Scott Summers, will be leaping off the comic book pages and into MMOs when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/marvel-heroes"><em>Marvel Heroes</em></a> eventually comes out. Until then, we'll have to content ourselves with scoping out his chiseled, spandex'd body and secretly wishing that we had his death ray eyes the next time we get stuck behind some jerk in traffic.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gazillion-entertainment">Gazillion</a> is happy to announce that Cyclops will be a playable character in <em>Marvel Heroes</em>. What he lacks in overall charisma and flying abilities, he makes up for with a facial cannon capable of ruining your day. Cyclops is the on-again, off-again leader of the X-Men, a group of heroes that is also confirmed to be a part of the game.<br />

Are there enough robots in your life? If your answer is "yes," you're most likely not concerned about the alpha testing of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SteelWar-Online/">SteelWar Online</a></em>. For those of us who instead welcome our new mechanical overlords, the kickoff of the alpha test is good news, as it means that the game is drawing ever closer to release. And seeing as it's a browser-based game available directly via Facebook, you'll have an easy time if you feel the urge to take part in said testing.<br />
<br />
Not a big fan of testing free-to-play games? Well, developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PopPace/">PopPace</a> is trying to sweeten the pot slightly. During the alpha test, players will be given the equivalent of $2000 to blow in the game's cash shop, unlocking every option at will. While that's only good for the alpha test, players will receive an extra stash of microtransaction currency once the game goes live, and an extra stipend will be granted to players who find and report bugs. It's just the thing to fill that robot-shaped void in your life.<br />

Greetings, summoners, and welcome to the first installment of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-summoners-guidebook/">Summoner's Guidebook</a>! For a new player, the Guidebook is a one-stop-shop to gaining familiarity with the various elements of <a href="http://leagueoflegends.com"><em>League of Legends</em></a>. For the more advanced players, we'll also be covering ways to improve on weak areas of your play and how to deal with the toughest of matchups.<br />

I was a new player once, and I remember being extremely daunted by the number of things I needed to learn to be competitive in <a href="http://massively.com/tag/league-of-legends"><em>LoL</em></a>. Although the journey from newbie to expert was long and difficult, I learned a lot about common mistakes and how to reduce them. If you're looking to step up your game or if you're just getting into the <em>League</em>, the Summoner's Guidebook is the place for you to learn without being treated like you're a noob.<br />
<br />
This week, we're going to cover the community resources available to you. There are a lot of websites dedicated to <em>League of Legends</em>, and it would be foolish to assume that this column is the only place to get advice on the game. If there's something I haven't covered yet or there's a topic I'm unfamiliar with, you can be sure that one of these places will have the info you're looking for. In the midst of the cold winds of January, it's the warmth of the Winter Solstice that keeps <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/vanguard/"><em>Vanguard</em></a> players alive and happy. With <em>Vanguard's</em> fifth anniversary here at last, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> is blowing on the coals of this simmering MMO in the hopes of raising the flames of community interest.<br />
<br />
First up is the <a href="http://vgplayers.station.sony.com/newsArchive.vm?section=News&amp;month=current&amp;id=1345">Winter Solstice in-game event</a>, which started on January 21st. Players can participate by locating the event NPC in New Targonor. On next Sunday, the 29th, the Vanguard CMs will be throwing an anniversary bash and handing out gifts on the Telon server starting at 1:00 p.m. EST.<br />
<br />
SOE's also throwing <a href="https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=293220027393878">a Facebook contest</a> to give away one of five in-game items. Interested parties are encouraged to head over to <em>Vanguard's </em>Facebook page for more information on how to enter.<br />

It's been a pretty exciting time in mobile gaming this week. Not only am I finding more reasons to love minimal specs and portable gaming, but I see even more applications coming down the pike that will make mobile gaming even more exciting and possible. I envision a future in which cloud computing, storage and high-speed internet make devices thinner, lighter, and faster. Of course, this all depends on several factors from developers who might wish to take advantage of the technologies to companies that will provide the pipeline to us all.<br />
<br />
In my opinion, it's not a matter of if but <em>when</em> this switch to portable, cloud-based gaming happens. It just makes sense when you look at all of the ways we have switched to a more cloud-based world. I write these articles through the cloud; I do my banking on a website that is hosted somewhere far, far away. If you've ever bought a product online, you have trusted the internet in more ways than one.<br />

The dev team behind <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/star-supremacy/"><em>Star Supremacy</em></a> is gearing up for its first update of 2012. The Colony Starship patch features new optimizations to the alliance system, under-the-hood performance tweaks, and new items in the cash shop (as well as a few price changes).<br />

The patch isn't quite live yet, but you can look for it this time tomorrow. What a year, huh? We gamers have seen a lot of changes, but especially in the mobile market. New devices came and went, technologies spread out even further in the world, and MMO gaming established itself on the smallest screens possible. Of course, the mobile market is not as large as the standard MMO market, but it is definitely growing. As more devices appear, more players come to fill up the games.<br />
<br />
Our phones are not what they used to be, even five years ago. They are now truly tiny and powerful computing devices that are always connected. A player can literally live all of his digital life on one small device. If we look at the laptop and netbook market, we see even more growth and power. All of these devices need games to play on them, and MMOs fit perfectly into the mobile lifestyle.<br />

It's almost over. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/runescape"><em>RuneScape's</em></a> year-long celebration of its 10th anniversary is coming to a close, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jagex">Jagex</a> has great, wonderful plans to end it with a bang. Naturally, this translates into "developer manhunt" because why not?<br />
<br />
During New Year's Eve, players are encouraged to be on alert as the clock strikes midnight 39 times in each of the time zones across the world. Every time this happens, a special moderator's in-game location will be made known through Facebook, on Twitter and in <em>RuneScape </em>itself.  Those who can hunt down and find this mod in time will be treated to a special celebration.<br />
<br />
The first clock to strike midnight on New Year's Eve is in Tokelau on Saturday, December 31st, at 5:00 a.m. EST. <em>RuneScape </em>players may wish to note that not all 39 "midnights" occur on the hour (<a href="http://www.timeanddate.com/counters/worldfirst.html/?time=010500">this helpful website</a> lays out the precise order).<br />

Could <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ubisoft/">Ubisoft</a> be developing an MMO for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/nintendo/">Nintendo's</a> upcoming Wii U, of all platforms? There are a few indications that, yes, the studio is indeed doing just that.<br />
<br />
The first step in the puzzle comes from Ubisoft's <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/emilegauthier">Emile Gauthier</a>, who posted <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/emilegauthier/status/143719963339915265">the following tweet</a> yesterday: "Ubisoft Quebec is working on a NEW AAA MMORPG Game and we need people to fill these very strategic positions."<br />
<br />
The link attached sends readers to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ubisoftquebec?v=app_404596412628">Ubisoft's Facebook page</a>, where a number of recently posted job descriptions are listed. These jobs include Senior Engine Programmer (Wii U -- AAA title), Network Programmer (Wii U -- AAA title), Tools Programmer (AAA MMO), Online Game Design Project Manager, Programmer Gameplay (MMO AAA), and Animation Art Director (MMO AAA). Since all of these have been lumped together and added within a few days of each other, one might come to the conclusion that it is for the same game -- a Wii U MMO.<br />

Loyalty, tradition, brotherhood, and discipline are the cornerstones of what makes the Templars so effective in combating the evil that we fail to see all around us.<br />

Before <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tabula-rasa/"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a>, before <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/ultima-online/"><em>Ultima Online</em></a>, before any of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ultima/"><em>Ultimas</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/richard-garriott">Richard Garriott</a> had a vision for what he called the "ultimate" RPG. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/notes/richard-garriott-de-cayeux/what-is-a-lord-british-ultimate-role-playing-game/259507887434380">In a lengthy Facebook post</a>, Garriott takes us back to 1974 when he first got the idea for such a game after being influenced by Lord of the Rings and Dungeons &amp; Dragons. Starting with BASIC games on his school's teletype and moving up through the modern era of MMOs, Garriott details how he's been pursuing a dream of creating and refining one RPG to rule them all.<br />
<br />
He doesn't have kind words for how <em>Ultima Online's</em> shaped up since his absence, however, saying that elements like Elves and Ninjas were added against his wishes.<br />
<br />
"This is only a small example of why and how <em>Ultima </em>has drifted away from Richard Garriott, but I have not drifted away from <em>Ultima</em>," he writes. "It is clear to me that I, Richard Garriott, am an essential ingredient of at least the Ultimate <em>Ultima</em>, if not more broadly the Ultimate RPG. Perhaps one day, now that the people who pushed me out of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/EA/">EA</a> more than a decade ago are long since gone, EA will recognize that together, we could rebuild that franchise in a way that they have failed to do in the intervening years. <span>Richard Garriott is an essential ingredient in the Ultimate <em>Ultima</em>!"<br />

He ends his passionate speech with a few glimpses into the design for this "ultimate" RPG that he and his team are currently designing: "</span>You will have customized Avatar homesteads and real roles to play in a deep, beautifully realized highly interactive virtual world. It will have virtues and the hero's journey reflected back to the player. It will have the best of synchronous and asynchronous features in use. Fiction will support your arrival from earth into this new world. The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_based_on_video_games">list of films</a> based on video games is long, if not particularly distinguished. The list is about to get a bit lengthier thanks to an upcoming collaboration between <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gaia-interactive">Gaia Interactive</a> and Radar Pictures.<br />
<br />
The two firms have just released a new press blurb trumpeting the fact that they've formed an alliance to bring <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/monster-galaxy"><em>Monster Galaxy</em></a> to the big screen. What the heck is <em>Monster Galaxy</em>, you say? Well, it's a Facebook title that "has reigned as a top 10 game on the platform for six consecutive months," according to the release.<br />
<br />
The film version of <em>Monster Galaxy</em> will feature its unique "Moga" characters as well as "rich story and charming artwork." Gaia Interactive was founded in 2003 and claims to be one of the world's most active social gaming communities. Radar Pictures is owned by Ted Field, an entertainment executive with producer credits on films including Pitch Black, The Last Samurai, and Jumanji.<br />

Last week, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sony-Online-Entertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> chose <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/27/dc-universe-online-to-go-free-to-play-on-november-1st/">November 1st</a> for the arrival of free-to-play in Gotham City, and that day is upon us. According to the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DC-Universe-Online/">DC Universe Online</a></em> <a href="http://www.facebook.com/DCUniverseOnline">Facebook</a> page, the F2P rollout has begun; consequently, the game is currently down for maintenance "and will be for some time." Says <em>DCUO's</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/RadarX/">RadarX</a>:

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/clapalong/">ClapAlong's</a> MMO venture into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/king-arthur/">Arthurian</a> myths and legends has transitioned out of closed and into open beta. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/castlot/"><em>Castlot</em></a> is now available to try for any and all curious knights, and ClapAlong is not shy with the efforts to woo them to this round table.<br />
<br />
In addition to featuring several improvements from the closed beta, including a newcomer's guide and ransack function, the open beta will feature daily login bonuses. ClapAlong is also promising to roll over 150% of any in-game currency you purchase to the live edition, even if you spend the currency in the closed beta. Finally, there are prizes to be had to the first player who spots and reports a bug, and to anyone who is willing to do a little Facebook promotion for the game.<br />
<br />
This browser-based title gives players a choice between joining the "light" side of King Arthur or the "dark" side of Lord Blackmore. There's a variety of gameplay elements at work, including both turn-based and real-time combat depending on your particular venue.<br />

As <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/star-supremacy/"><em>Star Supremacy</em></a> continues its star trek through beta and toward release, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/barbily-games/">Barbily Games</a> has a few treats (but not tricks) in store for testers. After gathering feedback and bug reports from players in the beta, the dev team has whipped up a few hefty updates that should improve the game end-to-end. These updates include an improved UI, a chat system, alliances, item trading, and a tutorial.<br />
<br />
And even though the team is mired in beta craziness, there's always time for a little Halloween fun. The <em>Star Supremacy</em> devs have issued a challenge to players to find hidden GM bases. Those that do will be rewarded with special in-game items, such as pumpkin helmets and longevity tokens.<br />
<br />
Finally, Barbily is giving away gaming headsets to a few lucky fans that have "liked" the game's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Star-Supremacy/167124213363092?sk=wall">Facebook page</a>. The drawing will happen when the page reaches 30,000 likes.<br />
<br />
<em>Star Supremacy </em>will be heading into open beta on November 15th.<br />

After the past few days' Week of the Dragon, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world/"><em>The Secret World</em></a> invites you to get all those burning questions off your chest in a fun Q&amp;A setting. Using Facebook as a platform for this back-and-forth exchange, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom/">Funcom</a> wants its fans to ask any and all Dragon-related queries on its social media page.<br />

If so interested, you can head over to <em>The Secret World</em> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/thesecretworld">on Facebook</a>, click the Questions &amp; Answers tab, and let 'er rip! Funcom will be compiling the best of these questions and will answer them on Sunday, October 23rd at 2:00 p.m. EDT. Of course, due to time and other restraints, Funcom will not be able to answer every query posed.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/raph-koster">Raph Koster</a> spoke at the recently concluded <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-online-2011">GDC Online 2011</a>, and if the summary on <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/37884/GDC_Online_Raph_Koster_Urges_Developers_To_Take_Back_Control_.php">Gamasutra</a> is any indication, his message was somewhat mixed.<br />
<br />
Unsurprisingly, the former sandbox maestro (and current social gaming evangelist) had a lot of positive things to say about Facebook. On the other hand, he said that going too far down the accessibility road can lead to "bad art."<br />
<br />
He also opined that "design is about constraining people," but that games still have the potential for player creativity, and that Facebook has more user-generated content than games or virtual worlds. If you're confused yet, you're not alone, as Koster also mentioned something about wizards, magic circles, and his belief that the world is becoming more game-like (and thus there's no one better to shape it than game developers). "Let's watch out not to let the pointsification and rulesification, quantification, and reductionism that we have always loved about what we do -- let's not let that change who we are," Koster said.<br />
