It's time for another in-depth look at New Eden's thriving economy, and as you'd expect in a game built around interminable conflict, business is booming. <a href="http://ccpgames.com">CCP's</a> resident economist, Dr. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eyjolfur-gudmundsson">Eyj&oacute;lfur Gu&eth;mundsson</a>, is back with the latest <a href="http://eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> Quarterly Economic Newsletter (<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=892">QEN</a>), and while it's a bit on the old news side for those lucky enough to attend last month's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eve-fanfest-2011/">Fanfest</a> where it was initially presented, the trends, observations, and raw data are still relevant for the rest of us.<br />
<br />
In a nutshell, keep killing your friends and neighbors, as the constant bloodletting is integral to New Eden's economic well-being. "<em>Warfare and the </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online">EVE Online</a><em> economy thrive on each other. Without warfare there is very little consumption in </em>EVE Online<em> and without a strong economy (and lots of personal wealth) wars can't be won</em>," Gu&eth;mundsson explains.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/04/ccp-releases-eve-quarterly-economic-newsletter/">CCP releases EVE Quarterly Economic Newsletter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 04 Apr 2011 22:00:00 EST. Four times per year, CCP Lead Economist Dr. Eyj&oacute;lfur Gu&eth;mundsson and his team of researchers publish the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/quarterly-economic-newsletter/">Quarterly Economic Newsletter (QEN)</a>. In addition to providing trackable statistics on <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s in-game market, each issue focuses heavily on analysing one particular topic. <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=767">This quarter's report</a> focuses on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/19/eve-evolved-untangling-the-mystery-of-the-sleepers/">wormhole systems</a> and the state of the tech 3 market. Updated player demographics show more and more players entering wormhole space, with a drop in the number of characters in high-security space. Statistics for the number of jumps in wormhole space over the past year show a similar trend of growing activity.<br />
<br />
This QEN provides some enlightening graphs on the popularity of various tech 3 offensive subsystems and how tech 3 material costs have changed in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> over the past year. Perhaps most illuminating is the sharp rise in the use of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/06/eve-evolved-tech-3-strategic-cruisers/">tech 3 strategic cruisers</a> in locations that put them at risk. While the majority are being flown in mission hubs and market systems, over 35% were found outside the safety of high-security space. In addition to this quarter's focus on wormholes, the report contains the usual graphs tracking in-game prices, trade volumes, ships in use and other useful metrics.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/11/new-eve-quarterly-economic-newsletter-talks-wormholes-and-tech-3/">New EVE Quarterly Economic Newsletter talks wormholes and tech 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 11 Jun 2010 10:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is a game that's often lauded for its sandbox style and realistic economic structures. Every quarter, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games/"><em>CCP</em></a> Lead Economist Dr. Eyj&oacute;lfur Gu&eth;mundsson and his team of researchers wade through mountains of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> usage logs to find some interesting economic statistics. In their <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/quarterly-economic-newsletter/">Quarterly Economic Newsletters (QEN)</a>, CCP deliver graphs tracking in-game prices, trade volumes, ships in use and a whole host of other useful metrics.<br />

One of the strengths of the sandbox game <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is its player-driven economy, which developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> monitors through a small team of researchers headed up by Lead Economist Dr. Eyj&oacute;lfur Gu&eth;mundsson (aka <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eyjolfur-gudmundsson">CCP Dr.EyjoG</a>). They observe all manner of player interactions and sift through a tremendous amount of data to track how <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s economy changes over time. Their findings are presented to the playerbase (or to anyone curious about virtual economies) in the form of Quarterly Economic Newsletters (QEN). CCP released the 3rd Quarter 2009 report this week, which gives us a look at player demographics and the most popular ships flown by those players. (It's interesting to note that the most popular ship in the game is now the <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Hulk">Hulk</a>, a mining vessel which has usurped the <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Raven">Raven</a> battleship as <em>EVE</em>'s most flown ship, while <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Item_Database:Ships:Black_Ops">Black Ops battleships</a> are <em>EVE</em>'s least flown ships.) <br />
<br />
This latest QEN also gives various price indices and Market Snapshots, which chart the volumes of a number of popular items traded on the open market. CCP also shows the impact "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/17/eve-onlines-anti-rmt-operation-unholy-rage-bans-over-6200-accou/">Operation: Unholy Rage</a>" -- their anti-RMT initiative -- has had on <em>EVE</em> <em>Online</em>'s economy with over 18,000 (paying) accounts banned to date. Dr.EyjoG writes, <em>"Unholy Rage taught us a great deal about RMT operations in </em>EVE<em>. We now have a much clearer picture of the extent of operations and the tools and methods they use."</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/10/eves-quarterly-economic-newsletter-focuses-on-impact-of-anti-rm/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE's Quarterly Economic Newsletter focuses on impact of anti-RMT operation</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/10/eves-quarterly-economic-newsletter-focuses-on-impact-of-anti-rm/">EVE's Quarterly Economic Newsletter focuses on impact of anti-RMT operation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 10 Nov 2009 19:00:00 EST. Of course there's <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNhPig8inEY">the main keynote</a> that included <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a> info and gameplay footage, but the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFEi2aIvsFA">CCP Panel</a> gave players in attendance the opportunity to ask the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> developers whatever they felt like. <br /><br />The responses from the devs explain quite a bit about the choices <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> has made with both <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> and <em>DUST 514</em>, and there are some hints of what's to come. More than anything, it's interesting to see this kind of direct interaction between the players and the people who create the game. <em>(Obligatory disclaimer: The CCP Panel video is a bit NSFW with the language in parts, but if you're watching something like this on the job... you probably don't care.)</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/08/eve-fanfest-2009-videos-are-up/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Fanfest 2009 videos are up</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/08/eve-fanfest-2009-videos-are-up/">EVE Fanfest 2009 videos are up</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 08 Oct 2009 19:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eyjolfur-gudmundsson">Dr. Eyj&oacute;lfur Gu&eth;mundsson</a> from CCP has released another quarterly <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/qen">economic newsletters</a>, this time for the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=665">1st quarter of 2009</a>. Despite the quarterly name this is the first report since the one for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/16/quarterly-economic-newsletter-for-eve-online-released/">Q1 2008</a>. This time the PDF weighs in at 48 pages of editorial, graphs and images. The first graph in the document show the number of active paying accounts that the game has had from launch up until March 2009, ending shortly before the point at which CCP announced they have passed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/06/eve-online-turns-6-today-announces-over-300k-subscribers/">300,000 subscribers</a>. Interestingly although the graph shows strong growth from November 2008 onwards, which is when CCP released the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/quantum-rise">Quantum Rise</a> expansion, the actual numbers before that showed a slight decline in subscriptions that is not addressed in the commentary.<br /><br />There is also an extensive analysis of skill points, with the difference in the number of points in each skill point group for each race showing correlation between the race of the character and the skills trained. Interestingly Gallente characters tend to have more points in drone skills, while Caldari characters have the highest missile skills. This seems to indicate that players are following their racial ship choices for their skill training, which is not something that the game enforces. There's a lot more information in the report itself, including detail on ship prices over time, Tech 3 production for the first month and mineral trading. <br /><br />You can read the full document at the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=665">dev blog</a>, and follow the comments from players on the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=1089867"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span> forums</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/09/new-eve-quarterly-economic-newsletter/">New EVE quarterly economic newsletter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 09 Jun 2009 11:00:00 EST. As an MMO matures and the number of subscribers increases by thousands of new players every year, representing very different playstyles and outlooks on how the game is evolving, there are few companies out there that would ask the players themselves to advise on how best to move forward. But this is exactly what <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> is doing with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a>.<br /><br />Following their <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/28/eve-online-developers-speak-about-player-elected-councils/">GDC 2009 presentation on virtual democracies</a>, Massively had a chance to speak with Dr. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eyjolfur-gudmundsson">Eyj&oacute;lfur Gu&eth;mundsson</a>, CCP's lead economist, (also know as Dr. EyjoG) and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/petur-johannes-oskarsson">P&eacute;tur J&oacute;hannes &Oacute;skarsson</a>, a researcher at CCP who is in the unique position of pursuing a Master's degree in Philosophy while facilitating a system where political philosophies can play out virtually.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/30/massively-speaks-with-eve-online-devs-about-council-of-stellar-m/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively speaks with EVE Online devs about Council of Stellar Management</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/30/massively-speaks-with-eve-online-devs-about-council-of-stellar-m/">Massively speaks with EVE Online devs about Council of Stellar Management</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 30 Apr 2009 10:00:00 EST. Players are not selected by <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a>, the creators of <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span>, they're actually elected by the game's subscribers themselves. Those elected form the <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/What_is_the_CSM">Council of Stellar Management</a> (CSM), delegates who represent the interests of the players and deal directly with CCP Games. It's a bold idea and certainly one that many MMO developers would shy away from, particularly in that the CSM has input into the game's development pipeline. <br /><br />CCP Games felt what they're doing would be of interest to other people in the industry, and gave a presentation at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2009">GDC 2009</a>. The session was titled "<a href="https://www.cmpevents.com/GD09/a.asp?option=C&amp;V=11&amp;SessID=9311">The Council of Stellar Management: EVE Online Bridges Worlds for a Society</a>". Two speakers from CCP Games presented: Dr. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eyjolfur-gudmundsson">Eyj&oacute;lfur Gu&eth;mundsson</a>, <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span>'s lead economist, (also known as Dr. EyjoG) and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/petur-johannes-oskarsson">P&eacute;tur J&oacute;hannes &Oacute;skarsson</a>, a researcher at CCP whose work has been integral to making the CSM a reality. <br /><em></em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/28/eve-online-developers-speak-about-player-elected-councils/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online developers speak about player-elected councils</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/28/eve-online-developers-speak-about-player-elected-councils/">EVE Online developers speak about player-elected councils</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 28 Apr 2009 20:00:00 EST. How does it impact your ability to assess the state of <em>EVE</em>'s economy, and are there assumptions you've made in the past that you need to reassess now?</strong><br /><br />It's a good thing that you mentioned the starbase exploit because <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/10/ccp-games-releases-findings-on-eve-starbase-exploit-investigatio/">we are in the final stages of creating a very thorough dev blog on that</a>, which will hopefully be published very soon. [Note: this interview was conducted just prior to the release of the investigation's findings.]<br /><br />There are certain things with the POS exploit that made it very difficult to detect. You basically needed to be able to go to that particular starbase and look at it, look at the setup and so on. It was difficult for us to detect it otherwise, except from the code once we knew what we were looking for.<br /><br />From a market perspective the <em>EVE</em> economy has become so big that in order for you to impact the market you will really have to have large quantities. And as will be shown in this dev blog that will be published, the scale of the exploit really didn't start until late 2008... <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/15/ccp-games-on-the-extent-and-impact-of-eves-starbase-exploit/">to the large industrial scale so that it started to impact the market</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/massively-interviews-eves-lead-economist-part-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively interviews EVE's Lead Economist part 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/massively-interviews-eves-lead-economist-part-2/">Massively interviews EVE's Lead Economist part 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 12:00:00 EST. One major aspect of the game is that its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">far future setting of New Eden</a> functions as one server, where players can build up empires -- or topple those of their rivals -- across more than 5000 solar systems. Beyond its scale, what distinguishes <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> from other games is that it has a player-driven virtual economy, the backbone of the game. <em>EVE</em>'s economy has been a major draw for players interested in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/crafting">market and crafting sophistication</a> generally unseen in an online game. <br /><br /><em>EVE</em>'s creators, <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a>, have fostered a setting where players can do what they want in the 'sandbox', a setting where the tools are in place for players to use as they see fit. Nearly every ship, module, and item used by a player in the game was produced by another player in New Eden at some point. Fight for military dominance and control vast regions of space, or corner the market as part of an industrial conglomerate -- it's all possible in <em>EVE</em>. In fact, the game's warfare and industry are very much intertwined, making <em>EVE</em>'s virtual economy a dynamic one. Monitoring and researching this economy is important to CCP Games, and to further that goal, they've hired real world economist Dr. Eyj&oacute;lfur Gu&eth;mundsson (aka CCP EyjoG). <br /><br />Massively recently caught up with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eyjolfur-gudmundsson/">Dr. EyjoG</a>, who told us about his rather unique position at CCP Games, and what he's learned about virtual economies along the way.<br /><strong></strong><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/massively-interviews-eve-online-lead-economist-dr-eyjog/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively interviews EVE Online Lead Economist Dr. EyjoG</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/massively-interviews-eve-online-lead-economist-dr-eyjog/">Massively interviews EVE Online Lead Economist Dr. EyjoG</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 12:00:00 EST. CCP's Lead Economist Dr. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eyjolfur-gudmundsson">Eyj&oacute;lfur Gu&eth;mundsson</a> and Researcher <a href="https://www.cmpevents.com/GD09/a.asp?option=G&amp;V=3&amp;id=610144">Petur Johannes Oskarsson</a> will speak about player governance in the virtual space, as exemplified by <em>EVE Online</em>'s "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/council-of-stellar-management">Council of Stellar Management</a>" (CSM). <br /><br />For those who haven't heard of it, the Council of Stellar Management is something unique to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>. It exists to convey the sentiments of the playerbase to <em>EVE'</em>s developer, <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a>. The idea is that it will ensure that CCP Games is developing and balancing the game in ways that fit the interests of the subscribers. It also allows for concerns between the players and developers to be addressed in a direct way by CCP Games.<br /><br />CSM representatives are not selected by the developers, who largely maintain a hands-off stance on how the CSM is run. The players themselves organize their own election campaigns and the playerbase votes for who the best women and men are for the role. Each CSM term lasts for six months, during which time regular meetings take place, one of which happens in Reykjavik, in 3-days (or more) of face-to-face sessions with CCP Games. <br /><br />The <a href="http://www.gdconf.com/">GDC 09</a> session is titled: "<a href="https://www.cmpevents.com/GD09/a.asp?option=C&amp;V=11&amp;SessID=9311">The Council of Stellar Management: EVE Online Bridges Worlds for a Society</a>".<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/eves-council-of-stellar-management-to-be-discussed-at-gdc-09/">EVE's Council of Stellar Management to be discussed at GDC 09</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 18:00:00 EST. Certain player-owned starbases in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> were producing valuable, high-end materials that they shouldn't have been. Once a group of players picked up on this, they exploited the game on a massive scale, resulting in trillions of ISK (Interstellar Kredits, the game's virtual currency) that never should have existed being injected into the game. To date, this is the largest economic manipulation (via an exploit) ever revealed in <em>EVE Online</em>. <br /><br />The starbase exploit was the first of several <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/05/further-developments-in-eves-grand-theft-alliance-drama/">player-triggered drama bombs</a> that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/01/eve-pvp-tournament-assassination-machiavellian-or-bad-form/">hit the game in recent weeks</a>, and resulted in a substantial amount of (in-game) market turmoil and player outcry over the issue. The game's subscribers wanted openness on the matter from <em>EVE</em>'s developer, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a>, and they've certainly got that as of today. CCP Games posted the results of the exploit investigation, and the caveat <em>"be careful what you wish for"</em> may apply here, given the depth and complexity of the findings conveyed to the playerbase in today's dev blog, "<a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=626">War Makes Thieves and Peace Hangs Them</a>."<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/10/ccp-games-releases-findings-on-eve-starbase-exploit-investigatio/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CCP Games releases findings on EVE starbase exploit investigation</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/10/ccp-games-releases-findings-on-eve-starbase-exploit-investigatio/">CCP Games releases findings on EVE starbase exploit investigation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 10 Feb 2009 17:30:00 EST. Unlike your average run-of-the-mill exploit in most massively multiplayer online games, the exploit in question has had a significant impact on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a>'s virtual economy -- the backbone of the game itself. All players in <em>EVE</em> interact in one vast galaxy, and their actions in the sandbox can create ripples felt by their fellow players, which has certainly been the case in this past week.<br /><br /><em>EVE Online's</em> developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> has opted to hold off on responding to most press inquiries for comment on the issue, having issued a statement on the matter and then focusing on the investigation and a weekend meeting with <em>EVE</em>'s player-elected community representatives, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/council-of-stellar-management">Council of Stellar Management</a> (CSM). The minutes from that meeting are now available, and several of EVE's developers took part in the discussion: namely CCP's Lead Economist <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eyjolfur-gudmundsson/">Dr. EyjoG</a> (Dr. Eyj&oacute;lfur Gu&eth;mundsson) and CCP Arkanon -- who heads up the company's Internal Affairs division, which investigates the CCP Games staff themselves, hopefully ensuring that no <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP</a> employee can abuse their influence over the game. <br /><br />Read on for Massively's highlights of the state of affairs in <em>EVE Online</em>, in the wake of the starbase exploit.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/15/ccp-games-on-the-extent-and-impact-of-eves-starbase-exploit/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CCP Games on the extent and impact of EVE's starbase exploit</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/15/ccp-games-on-the-extent-and-impact-of-eves-starbase-exploit/">CCP Games on the extent and impact of EVE's starbase exploit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 15 Dec 2008 19:00:00 EST. But at times there are bottlenecks in terms of supply. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-greyscale">CCP Greyscale</a> cites the example of how the limited number of T2 blueprint originals (BPOs) decreased availability of items while driving up prices. <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP</a> stepped in by introducing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/invention">'invention'</a>, where players can attempt to create higher-end items via R&amp;D, eliminating the issue of supply and normalizing prices. <br /><br />CCP Greyscale's <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=601">latest dev blog is called "Alchemy"</a> and looks at the newest issue they've identified with <em>EVE's </em>economy, the inflated price of rare moon minerals. Greyscale says, <em>"In particular, two rare moon minerals - dysprosium and (to a lesser extent) promethium - are becoming ever-more expensive as increased demand puts pressure on a limited supply. This is likely to become an increasingly large issue as time goes on, with prices for these minerals continuing to rise due to demand, and the increased price being passed on to the consumer of the final product."</em> As we've mentioned in the past, these rare minerals in New Eden are something that the largest, most powerful alliances have sought to control and thus has been one of the drivers of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/11/eves-alliance-warfare-the-largest-virtual-conflict-ever-waged/">conflict in lawless 0.0 space</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/27/ccp-games-introducing-new-economic-measure-in-eve/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CCP Games introducing new economic measure in EVE</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/27/ccp-games-introducing-new-economic-measure-in-eve/">CCP Games introducing new economic measure in EVE</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 27 Oct 2008 17:00:00 EST. While the interview discussed the importance of social structures in <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> given the game's single-shard nature and of course the game's economics, he was asked questions about gameplay and some of the core foundations of the game -- namely the freedom to act and the consequences that result (or the perceived lack of consequences). <br /><br />Dr. EyjoG was asked about the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/trust">concept of trust in the sandbox game,</a> how some players feel there's not enough reciprocity in terms of consequences for one's actions in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE.</em></a> <em>"Should we provide more security, more traceability -- that would help it out, but it's definitely a game design and balance question. For us we see the universe as it is, we don't see that need... at this point at least," </em>Dr. EyjoG responded. The interview also hinted at some of the as-yet unrealized possibilities in the game such as player-requests to tie sovereignty in with rules that govern those regions of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/territorial-control ">controlled territory</a> and what the game might be like years down the line.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/18/ccp-games-lead-economist-on-social-structures-in-eve-online/">CCP Games lead economist on social structures in EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 18 Oct 2008 17:00:00 EST. One would imagine this is no easy task, with an overall trade value of all <em>EVE</em> markets ranging between 2 and 2.5 trillion isk per day. Lead Economist CCP Dr. EyjoG <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=594">released a Quarterly Economic Newsletter</a> (QEN) for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> today, which is 18 pages full of data which should keep <em>EVE's</em> market and industry-oriented players happy (and hopefully make up for the delayed QEN, which Dr. EyjoG addresses in his announcement). <br /><br />The Q1 2008 QEN kicks off with an editorial, and here are some brief highlights of what follows: <br />
<ul>
    <li>Demographics (number of accounts, most and least populated regions)</li>
</ul>
<ul>
    <li>Price Level Changes (Mineral prices, Primary Producer Price Index, Secondary Producer Price Index, and Consumer Price Index)</li>
</ul>
<ul>
    <li>Mining ship production and losses (with the venerable "Hulk" exhumer losses accounting for a staggering 6 trillion isk in destroyed property in Q1 2008) </li>
</ul>
<ul>
    <li>Market Snapshots</li>
</ul>

The interview focused on two facets of the game: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE's</span></a> economy, and the fact that with other sci-fi MMO titles like <a href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com/index.php "><span style="font-style: italic;">Jumpgate Evolution</span></a> on the way, <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> may face increased competition in the coming months and years. <br /><br />CCP's Lead Economist, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eyjolfur-gudmundsson">Dr. Eyj&oacute;lfur Gu&eth;mundsson</a> talked with Strategy Informer about the game's economic depth, which dwarfs other titles, despite having a subscriber base that's a fraction of what <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> enjoys. The interview touched on the possibilities of new trade hubs being established by players over time, the scarcity of certain technologies and their increasing prices, and how the market moves in general. However, the main aspects of the game he discussed were the player-run financial services that have sprung up in <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span>, what the community has come up with on its own.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/03/strategy-informer-interviews-ccp-games-about-the-future-of-eve-o/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Strategy Informer interviews CCP Games about the future of EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/03/strategy-informer-interviews-ccp-games-about-the-future-of-eve-o/">Strategy Informer interviews CCP Games about the future of EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 03 Sep 2008 20:00:00 EST. They also got some face time with Lead Economist <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/21/gc-2008-eve-economist-says-players-set-the-games-course/">Dr. Eyj&oacute;lfur Gu&eth;mundsson</a> of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games,</a> who discusses some of CCP's projects and initiatives, namely the <a href="http://www.eve-csm.com">Council of Stellar Management</a> (CSM). <br /><br />Dr. Eyj&oacute;lfur shares his point of view on the process of having players interact with the developers on affecting the development pipeline. He also addresses the poor voter turnout in the CSM election, which was not surprising given the general apathy many people have about real-life elections, he comments. The interview largely focuses on Dr. Eyj&oacute;lfur's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/13/the-csm-speaks-will-ccp-games-listen/ ">experiences with the CSM,</a> but given his role in the company, he also mentioned the economic impact of factional warfare on the market in <em>EVE.</em> More information on this aspect of <em>EVE</em> should be covered in one of his forthcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/20/ccp-releases-eve-qen-says-250k-subs-by-q2-and-plans-gross-user/ ">Quarterly Economic Newsletters,</a> he says. That could be construed as populist pandering, for sure, but Gudmundsson -- who was addressing a room full of game developers -- dedicated most of his talk to the notion of "unleashing the power of players."<br /><br />He pointed to the <a href="http://www.eve-csm.com/">Council of Stellar Management</a> -- a democratically-elected group that represents the player-base in meetings with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> -- and the player-driven open market that manages itself in accordance with real-world principles of economics as examples of the communal direction in action.<br /><br />This is a notably different mentality than that found in <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">World of Warcraft </span></a>and similar games which dispense carefully constructed experiences to the players from the developers at the top. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span></a> stirs an open ended pot of players to cook up gameplay experiences. Godmundsson is talking up the open approach, but both methods arguably have their own special strengths and pitfalls.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/21/gc-2008-eve-economist-says-players-set-the-games-course/">GC 2008: EVE economist says players set the game's course</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 21 Aug 2008 14:00:00 EST.
