For much of EVE Online's life, warfare has revolved around player-owned structures of one sort or another. When conquerable stations were released at the end of 2003, they became flashpoints for PvP and goals for corporate territorial warfare. This continued even after the release of player-owned starbases in late 2004, as even the most territorial alliance didn't have the manpower to take down a well-defended large starbase. Industrialists held all the cards, and nullsec alliances made deals with them to open their moons for exploitation.

Eventually, player-built outposts arrived on the scene, and starbases were adopted to fill a military role in system defense. Whichever side in a fight could control the most starbases in a system would win the outpost, and fearsome dreadnoughts were introduced to make starbase sieges possible. Today, starbases take a back seat to wars over infrastructure hubs, territorial claim units and sovereignty blockade units. The war will eventually extend to planets, but until now planetary interaction has been an entirely industrial affair without the slightest hint of EVE's typical conflict. With the coming Crucible expansion, the starbase and customs office systems are due to be overhauled in a way that should lead to more conflict and lay the ground work for DUST 514.

In this week's EVE Evolved, I look back at the history of starbases, the impact of the coming starbase revamp, and the possibility of additional conflict brought in by the new customs offices.
Continue reading EVE Evolved: Player-owned structures

EVE Evolved: Player-owned structures originally appeared on Massively on Sun, 27 Nov 2011 18:00:00 EST. Aika, gPotato's free-to-play MMORPG, just got a lot more epic, as the game's Epic II: Exodus just arrived. The latest chapter brings a heapin' helpin' of new content to the game, including new zones, new instances, new loot, and perhaps most importantly, new things to kill.

The story of Epic II sees players fleeing from the current world to the island of Traband. The local tribes, however, are none too happy about that and rise up against the players, and the treacherous Dark Legion is behind it all. Players, of course, will have to put a stop to the Legion's nefarious practices.

In order to do just that, players will have to take advantage of the increased level cap, which now sits pretty at level 75. Players will also be able to take part in Aika's signature 1000 vs. 1000 PvP battles in order to vie for control of Traband's mystic towers. Control of the towers provides a player's nation with immunity from the harsh conditions of the island as well as granting access to an additional area. Lastly, players will have access to a new dungeon known as Lycan's Cave. This labyrinthine cavern system provides players with the choice of which path to take, with different bosses awaiting them at the end of each route. What other challenges await players on the island of Traband? Well, there's only one way to find out.

Double the epic: Aika's Epic II: Exodus goes live originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 19:00:00 EST. "Finally... choose your side," a tantalizing Transformers Universe teaser says as a shadowed figure completes the change from vehicle into robot. During BotCon, Jagex gave die-hard Transformers fans the first look at the MMO's development, including concept art and the aforementioned trailer. BotCon's turned out to be a gold mine of Transformers Universe info so far.

Energon Pub brought back the official info from the event for our eager ears. The game, which is slated for a 2012 release, will be an action MMO that allows players to craft their own Transformers to suit their playstyles. Both Autobot and Decepticon sides will be open for play, and we'll be seeing many iconic figures from the Prime Universe, including the Prime cartoon, the book Exodus, and the War for Cybertron game.
EVE Online's development path from concept to release has followed a very different path to the MMO norm. Starting from its humble beginnings as one man's dream to build an online space game, EVE has developed into the massively popular game it is today. Rather than designing and developing the game all in one go, the CCP crew opted for a staged delivery approach. The game was re-made 11 times, each stage being progressively closer to the final goal. One of the biggest criticisms levied at NCsoft's sci-fi MMO Tabula Rasa is that it is, in many respects, an incomplete game. The Specialist tree has undergone months of retooling and tweaking to be made truly viable, the disparate amount of content in the mid to late levels has been the cause for considerable concern, and it's fairly well known that the game lacks a significant endgame.

It's this latter point that has caused a crisis of sorts on the Pegasus server. Both Defiance and Tranquility, two of the larger endgame guilds on the server (or so we're told), have decided to call it quits because of the barren state of the end-game. All there is to do once you've hit the level gap is PvP. Problem is, the PvP in Tabula Rasa is pretty broken, and the development team hasn't shown much interest in fixing it in the near future. Or if they have, they haven't done a terribly good job of communicating that.
Continue reading TR guilds say game over to the endgame

TR guilds say game over to the endgame originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 16 Feb 2008 19:30:00 EST.
