Maybe many of us would just rather remember MMOs as they were in life rather than at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/sunsets/">the moment of their demise</a>. But I believe that how a game went out is incredibly fascinating for many reasons and worthy of examination.<br />
<br />
It's in these final moments when an entire community has to say goodbye. It's in these moments that the developers mourn as well before pulling the plug. It's in these moments that history is being made one last time. And it goes without saying that it's in these moments that everyone curses the unfairness of it all.<br />
<br />
Today we're going to watch the first half of 10 videos featuring MMOs in their final moments. It's here we'll see how weird, crazy, sad, and interesting things can get. Maybe you were part of one (or more) of these moments or are simply curious what it was like. Either way, it's the end of the world as we know it. And we feel fine.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/11/the-perfect-ten-final-moments-of-mmos-part-1/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Perfect Ten: Final moments of MMOs, part 1</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/11/the-perfect-ten-final-moments-of-mmos-part-1/">The Perfect Ten: Final moments of MMOs, part 1</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 11 Apr 2013 09:00:00 EST. As another gaming year spins to a close, we here at the Institute for Digital Interactive Entertainment have been holding our archaeological department hostage with a trained buffy-tufted marmoset until it delivered a final report. After hours of begging and infected monkey bites, the head of that department, Prof. Justin Olivetti, Ph.D., handed us a scrap of urine-soaked paper with the following article inscribed.<br />
<br />
While the Institute strongly suggests that you ignore this report and instead work on your button-mashing exercises, the board of directors stated that all such papers must be posted for the public to see.<br />
<br />
This report is presented in the Yetbari typeface and contains a sequential series of items that number between 11 and 13.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/29/the-game-archaeologists-top-mmo-stories-of-2012/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist's top MMO stories of 2012</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/29/the-game-archaeologists-top-mmo-stories-of-2012/">The Game Archaeologist's top MMO stories of 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 29 Dec 2012 12:00:00 EST. I had an interesting revelation this past week. While it seems that we've had so many MMOs shutting down over the year, when I look at the big picture of all of the major titles that have been released, the vast majority of them are still in operation. It made me realize just how resilient and strong this industry is.<br />
<br />
Yet there are those games that have seen their final days and exist now only in our memories and dusty screenshot folders. Some might be good riddance to us; others are still painful wounds. We've all harbored fantasies of MMOs coming back from the great beyond for a second lease on life, but if you had to choose just one, what would it be?<br />
<br />
That's the topic for today's poll, so look at the following list and think long and hard about your choice. Resurrection isn't something that happens every day in MMOs, after all.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/24/leaderboard-mmo-most-worthy-of-resurrection/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Leaderboard: MMO most worthy of resurrection</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/24/leaderboard-mmo-most-worthy-of-resurrection/">Leaderboard: MMO most worthy of resurrection</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 24 Sep 2012 18:00:00 EST. As you know well by now, I do love me some "what ifs?" from time to time. In an industry as volatile and unpredictable as this one, it's not hard to imagine a world where, say, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/05/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-what-ifs-ultima-x-odyssey/"><em>Ultima X</em></a> did launch or where <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bill-roper/">Bill Roper</a> is coming off his fourth straight successful game or where a different studio secured the rights to a popular IP over another one.<br />
<br />
Perhaps the king of all MMO "what ifs" deals with the former (yes, former) king of MMOs. What if <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> never happened? Putting aside our own personal reaction, which may range from heartfelt relief to severe heartburn, we should look at this question without bias or emotion. Today I'm going to step way, way out on a limb and talk about an alternate universe where one of the biggest MMOs of all time simply did not happen.<br />
<br />
In that universe, how did the MMO industry unfold from 2004 on, and what would we be looking at playing today? Maybe it's an impossible mind exercise, but I've been mulling it over for a while, so here are six outcomes that I think are quite likely.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/26/the-game-archaeologist-what-if-world-of-warcraft-had-never-happ/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist: What if World of Warcraft had never happened?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/26/the-game-archaeologist-what-if-world-of-warcraft-had-never-happ/">The Game Archaeologist: What if World of Warcraft had never happened?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 26 Jun 2012 11:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/19/the-game-archaeologist-will-classic-mmos-survive-without-free-t/"><img alt="The Game Archaeologist Will classic MMOs survive without freetoplay" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/06/f1.jpg" /></a></div>
It's amazing to me how quickly the industry has shifted to where we don't just welcome free-to-play as a business model in MMOs -- we downright expect it. Take a look in the comments of any new MMO that dares to launch with a subscription-only model: People will be tripping over each other in an attempt to predict just when said game will break down and admit that it needs F2P. Whether or not <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare's</a> admission <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/15/ea-boss-swtor-absolutely-going-to-embrace-free-model/">that it's looking into F2P</a> for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> surprised you or not, it's a sign that no game is immune to the allure, dollar signs, and downright necessity of the popularity and flexibility of this model.<br />
<br />
I think this brings a pressing question to bear in the field of classic MMOs: Will they survive without free-to-play? It's a pretty important question for a few reasons. One, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/19/the-perfect-ten-free-to-play-holdouts/">a surprising majority of remaining sub-only MMOs</a> are older ones; two, people now expect free in games they try; and three, players aren't exactly flocking to classic MMOs anyway.<br />
<br />
This week I want to explore the conundrum that these games are in and why some players may have blinders on when it comes to the fate of their favorite games.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/19/the-game-archaeologist-will-classic-mmos-survive-without-free-t/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist: Will classic MMOs survive without free-to-play?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/19/the-game-archaeologist-will-classic-mmos-survive-without-free-t/">The Game Archaeologist: Will classic MMOs survive without free-to-play?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 19 Jun 2012 18:00:00 EST. Man oh man, why couldn't I just take a month or so off of this column without getting sucked back into it? Why must classic MMOs be so compelling and newsworthy these days?<br />
<br />
I planned to take some time off of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-game-archaeologist/">TGA</a> while I went through <a href="http://darkageofcamelot.com/"><em>Dark Age of Camelot</em></a> in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure">Choose My Adventure</a> (which you're all reading, yes?), but there was so much to talk about regarding older MMOs that I couldn't sit back and stay mum. Ergo, I've dashed off this special "break" column devoted to commenting on recent news about classic games. Hopefully this will help tide you over until I get back into the full swing of things in April.<br />
<br />
On the docket for today's discussion is <a href="http://vgplayers.station.sony.com/"><em>Vanguard's</em></a> forthcoming F2P change, <a href="http://www.everquest.com/"><em>EverQuest's</em></a> recent conversion, <a href="http://www.anarchy-online.com"><em>Anarchy Online's</em></a> stunning graphic engine video, and more!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/03/the-game-archaeologist-bio-break/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist: Bio break!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/03/the-game-archaeologist-bio-break/">The Game Archaeologist: Bio break!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 03 Apr 2012 13:00:00 EST. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Massively Speaking Episode </span><span style="font-weight: bold;">195 </span>wonders if you were actually fooled by any of the pranks that MMO studios put out there, or barring that, if some of the pranks sounded so cool that you wish they were real. For Massively's part, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/01/one-shots-is-back-long-live-one-shots/">we brought back One Shots as a joke</a>, and then <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/01/one-shots-bringing-it-back-for-realsies/">we brought it back for real</a> just because that was the best laugh of them all.<br />

<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-online-adventures/">EverQuest Online Adventures</a></em>, the console spinoff of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/"><em>EverQuest</em></a> franchise, is counting down the hours until the server is switched off at midnight tonight. In addition to <em>EQOA</em>, SOE is shuttering three other underperforming titles today: <em>Cosmic Rift, Infantry</em>, and <em>Star Chamber: The Harbinger Saga.</em><br />
<br />
Instead of spending its final days in sorrow, the <em>EQOA </em>community joined the dev team for a series of epic battles against marauding dragons this past week. Players <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/eqoa/posts/list.m?topic_id=115600014245">have filled the forums</a> with posts about <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/eqoa/posts/list.m?topic_id=115600014365">their favorite in-game memories</a> over the past nine years of gameplay. To compensate players for the loss of their game world, SOE gave <em>EQOA </em>subscribers three months of gold-level status in <em>EverQuest </em>and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>.<br />
<br />
<em>EQOA </em>came out in 2003 on the PlayStation 2 and was one of the first generation of console MMOs. For those Massively readers feeling nostalgic or curious about it, definitely check out our series on the game: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/">part 1</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/15/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/">part 2</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/22/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/">part 3</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/29/everquest-online-adventures-slays-its-final-dragon/">EverQuest Online Adventures slays its final dragon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 29 Mar 2012 16:00:00 EST. It appears that Leap Day 2012 is not destined to be kind to the MMO industry. On top of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/29/blizzard-announces-layoffs-of-600-employees-worldwide/">layoffs</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/29/black-prophecy-developer-reakktor-media-on-its-last-legs/">struggling studios</a>, we've received word that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment</a> has delivered a pink slip to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-online-adventures/"><em>EverQuest Online Adventures</em></a>. According to the company, <em>EQOA </em>will be sunsetted on March 29th.<br />
<br />
No specific reason was given for the move, but <a href="http://everquestonlineadventures.station.sony.com/news_story.vm?id=67961">a farewell letter posted on the site</a> attempts to soften the blow: "This is not an easy decision, but there comes a time when it's best for our developers to move on to the next adventure, and that day has come." In the <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/eqoa/posts/list.m?topic_id=115600014244">closure FAQ</a>, SOE also promises <span class="postbody">a celebration at the end of the game's run.</span><br />
<br />
To appease its remaining <em>EQOA </em>customers, SOE is offering three months of gold membership in both <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EverQuest</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> for current subscribers. This consolation prize will become effective on March 16th. SOE will also not be charging current players during March.<br />
<br />
<em>EQOA </em>has always been the smallest member of the <em>EverQuest </em>franchise since its release in 2003 on the PlayStation 2. We covered it in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/">our Game Archaeologist column</a> late last year and were impressed by the passion and memories that the game's fans shared.<br />

In 2003, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> tried an experiment to reach out to the (then) small-but-growing community of Mac users. The company released <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eqmac/"><em>EverQuest Macintosh Edition</em></a> -- quickly abbreviated to <em>EQMac </em>-- which incorporated the core game and the first four expansions of <a href="http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/"><em>EverQuest</em></a>: <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ruins-of-Kunark/">The Ruins of Kunark</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Scars-of-Velious/">The Scars of Velious</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Shadows-of-Luclin/">The Shadows of Luclin</a></em>, and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Planes-of-Power/">The Planes of Power</a></em>. Because <em>EQMac </em>was a separate version of the game, SOE segregated Apple players on their own server called Al'Kabor and then, for all intents and purposes, abandoned them as the "real" <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/"><em>EverQuest</em></a> continued to expand and advance.<br />
<br />
While the population didn't exactly explode, especially as the progression of time rendered <em>EQMac </em>stuck in a type of video game amber, a singular community of dedicated, helpful players formed, and they became proud of their hardcore home. According to many of them, <em>EQMac </em>was the way <em>EverQuest </em>was always meant to be played, frozen in time at the release of one of the game's best expansions. It was a mark of pride to say that you played on Al'Kabor, especially now as massive AAA MMOs dwarf the original <em>EQ </em>-- to say nothing of this odd <em>EQ </em>spinoff.<br />
<br />
Yet, as SOE posted, "<a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/eq/posts/list.m?topic_id=182821">all good things must end</a>," and with the news that <em>EverQuest </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/30/its-official-everquest-goes-free-to-play/">is being prepped for free-to-play</a>, <em>EQMac </em>players learned that they would not be joining the rest. Unless higher powers intervene, on March 29th, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/31/everquest-mac-fans-fight-for-survival-soe-responds/">Al'Kabor will be turned off for good</a>. As such, I felt this was a good time to look briefly at the history of this unique title and the testimonies of its passionate fans.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/14/the-game-archaeologist-mourns-the-end-of-eqmac/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist mourns the end of EQMac</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/14/the-game-archaeologist-mourns-the-end-of-eqmac/">The Game Archaeologist mourns the end of EQMac</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 14 Feb 2012 13:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dreamcast/">Dreamcast</a> was a brief but shining aberration in the gaming world. Coming along years after Sega had fallen out of its position as a top-runner in the console market, it represented the company's big attempt to reclaim its former glory. While it failed to succeed in that respect and ultimately closed up shop in 2001 (ending Sega's interest in the console market), the Dreamcast became a gaming cult favorite responsible for some of the most innovative titles ever made. Games like <em>Jet Grind Radio, Space Channel 5</em>, and <em>Shenmue </em>have remained fan favorites long after the Dreamcast's demise, which shows the legacy that these dev teams left behind.<br />
<br />
But perhaps the Dreamcast's greatest gift to the gaming world wasn't crazy taxis or space dancing but a surprisingly forward-looking approach to online gaming. In 2000, the Dreamcast took the first steps to bringing an online console RPG to market, and while it wasn't a true MMO, it certainly paved the way for titles like<em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/">EverQuest Online Adventures</a></em> and <a href="http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/index.shtml"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a>.<br />
<br />
It was bold, it was addictive, and it was gosh-darned gorgeous. Ladies and gentlemen: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/phantasy-star-online/"><em>Phantasy Star Online</em></a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/31/the-game-archaeologist-dials-up-phantasy-star-online-the-highli/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist dials up Phantasy Star Online: The highlights</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/31/the-game-archaeologist-dials-up-phantasy-star-online-the-highli/">The Game Archaeologist dials up Phantasy Star Online: The highlights</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 31 Jan 2012 13:00:00 EST. It's been a good month looking back at <a href="http://everquestonlineadventures.station.sony.com/"><em>EverQuest Online Adventures</em></a>, wouldn't you agree? Educational, almost. While this title is just about as far from the mainstream MMO eye as can be these days, it's heartening to know it's still out there, still running, and still capable of evoking fond memories from current and former players.<br />
<br />
While we did attempt to contact <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE</a> for an interview to see if we could find out anything new -- or even old -- about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-online-adventures/"><em>EQOA</em></a>, it failed to materialize. As a wonderful consolation prize, however, this week we'll hear from three players who have extensive experience in the game. So let's hit this column running and equip our +2 Ears of Paying Attention!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/22/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist's excellent EverQuest Online Adventures: The memories</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/22/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/">The Game Archaeologist's excellent EverQuest Online Adventures: The memories</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 Nov 2011 14:00:00 EST. To tell you all the truth, the comments from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/">last week's initial foray</a> into <a href="http://everquestonlineadventures.station.sony.com/"><em>EverQuest Online Adventures</em></a> bowled me over -- I truly was not expecting so many players to be so passionate about the game! How cool is that? I hope that some of you send me in your <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-online-adventures/"><em>EQOA</em></a> stories to <a href="mailto:justin@massively.com?subject=EQOA%20memories">justin@massively.com</a> so we can include them in next week's column.<br />
<br />
Today I want to welcome <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Rick-Stonebrook/">Rick "Stoney" Stonebrook</a> to our neck of the Massively woods. I remember finding Stoney's <em>EQOA </em>blog over a year ago and being so impressed that there was someone out there regularly updating a blog about this low-profile MMO. Stoney agreed to an interview about the game from a player's and blogger's perspective, so here goes!<br />
<br />
<strong>The Game Archaeologist: Please introduce yourself and your blog! Why did you start blogging about <em>EQOA</em>?</strong><br />
<br />
<strong>Stoney:</strong> Well, I'm 24 and have lived in a lot of places in the past few years. I adopted the name Stoney when I started the blog, <a href="http://eqoa.wordpress.com/">eqoa.wordpress.com</a>, in October 2010. The purpose for the blog was simple: compile as much information about the game as I could find using various search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and YouTube. I hadn't played since 2005 and wasn't familiar with any new content. I had always wanted to return to the game. Thus the blog's goal evolved from a collection of memories to an effort to get people to return.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/15/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist's excellent EverQuest Online Adventures: The blogger</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/15/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/">The Game Archaeologist's excellent EverQuest Online Adventures: The blogger</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 15 Nov 2011 17:00:00 EST. In the pantheon of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment's</a> flagship <a href="http://www.everquest.com/"><em>EverQuest</em></a> franchise, there is a whole family of MMOs gathered around the table every evening. There's Papa <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/"><em>EverQuest</em></a>, looking a little wrinkled and worn but also radiating fame and authority. Next to him is Mama <a href="http://everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>, a powerful matron of entertainment if there ever was one. They look proudly down the table at a bassinet where Baby <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-next/"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a> lies, cooing as it grows into the future generation of this family.<br />
<br />
Then, in the next room over is a cabinet. The cabinet is locked. Inside that cabinet is a weird abnormality that certainly looks like a member of the family, but he hasn't seen the light of day in quite some time. He subsists on the scraps of an aging console and the fading loyalty of fans, hoping against odds that one day he'll be allowed out for a stroll or something. His name is Cousin <a href="http://everquestonlineadventures.station.sony.com/"><em>EverQuest Online Adventures</em></a>, the <em>EQ </em>MMO nobody mentions.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-online-adventures/"><em>EQOA</em></a> is a strange abnormality in SOE's lineup. While it was one of the very first console MMOs and heir to the <em>EverQuest </em>name, it was quickly eclipsed in both areas by other games and left alone. Yet, against all odds, it continues to operate on the PlayStation 2, eight years and counting since its debut.<br />
<br />
This month <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-game-archaeologist/">the Game Archaeologist</a> will crack open that cabinet and give this interesting MMO a few weeks of attention and care. I think it's about time, don't you?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist's excellent EverQuest Online Adventures: The highlights</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/the-game-archaeologists-excellent-everquest-online-adventures/">The Game Archaeologist's excellent EverQuest Online Adventures: The highlights</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 Nov 2011 20:00:00 EST. As a long-time movie buff, I've always been fascinated by sequels. I know, they have a terrible reputation and everyone gets this face like he's digesting a porcupine when discussing them, but there's something fun about them as well. I think we always want a good story to continue, to see what happens next, and to answer the question, "What would the first film be like if it were put in the hands of a complete boob?" It would be an entertaining trainwreck, that's what.<br />
<br />
Even though the MMORPG genre is in its toddler stage, it's seen a number of sequels, prequels and spin-offs, just the same as other types of entertainment. Video game sequels for hit titles are safer financial investments than striking out into new territory, so it makes sense that MMO studios would follow this pattern as well.<br />
<br />
Right now there are loads of MMO sequels and spin-offs in the works -- including <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next/"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/planetside-next/"><em>PlanetSide Next</em></a>, <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mabinogi-2/"><em>Mabinogi 2</em></a>, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/maplestory-2/">MapleStory 2</a>, <a href="http://pso2.jp/alpha/">Phantasy Star Online 2</a>, <a href="http://www.dust514.org/">Dust 514</a></em>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/30/rumor-a-new-ultima-mmo-might-be-in-the-works/">even a possible <em>Ultima Online</em> sequel</a> -- so it's safe to say that the trend won't be dying down anytime soon. However, today I want to look at 10 sequels that already made it to release and briefly examine how they stacked up to their predecessors. Oh yes, there will be blood after the jump -- and I will drink your milkshake!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/19/the-perfect-ten-sequelitis/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Perfect Ten: Sequelitis</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/19/the-perfect-ten-sequelitis/">The Perfect Ten: Sequelitis</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 May 2011 11:30:00 EST. Time grows many layers, and this is especially true in MMORPGs. After all, not only are new quests, stories and chunks of content added to a game as it goes along, but the players themselves add their own memories and experiences to the mix. MMOs truly are virtual worlds, and they change over time and become richer. <a href="http://www.everquest.com/everquest.vm"><em>EverQuest</em></a> is no exception. After 12 years of adventure, danger, and story-telling, the game shows no signs of stopping.<br />
<br />
What is planned for the game? How will the last 12 years affect the decisions for the <em>next</em> 12 years? <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/"><em>EverQuest</em></a> has been one of the flagships of the genre, but how does a game of its age maintain any type of market visibility? Massively sat down with <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/soe">SOE</a> President <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/john-smedley">John Smedley</a>, <em>EQ</em> Assistant Lead Designer <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/alan-vancouvering">Alan VanCouvering</a>, and Associate Producer <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/harvey-burgess">Harvey Burgess</a> to find out. We'll also be taking a look back at the long history of Norrath and will even throw in some nuggets about <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a>.<br />

Click past the cut and let's take a look!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/16/celebrate-eqs-12-years-with-a-look-back-and-an-interview-with-s/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Celebrate EQ's 12 years with a look back and an interview with John Smedley</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/16/celebrate-eqs-12-years-with-a-look-back-and-an-interview-with-s/">Celebrate EQ's 12 years with a look back and an interview with John Smedley</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 16 Mar 2011 18:00:00 EST. Welcome back to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-game-archaeologist/">the Game Archaeologist's</a> third week of our <a href="http://everquest.station.sony.com/"><em>EverQuest </em></a>expedition! So, OK, we lost a few valued members of our team crossing the wilds of Norrath, but who would ever think that 10 rats could be so vicious when out for vengeance? It comes with the territory, and really, it's well worth the loss of human life if we can educate just one soul on one of the most influential MMOs of all time. Their mothers will understand their sacrifice.<br />
<br />
We've already taken a look at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/04/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-neverending-quest-the-highlights/">the highlights of <em>EverQuest</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/11/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-neverending-quest-the-vets/">the perspectives of several veterans of the game</a>, which means this week we must be gearing up for an inside look into the machinations of grinding, hell levels, alternative advancement and DKP. For this, we struggled through the Swamp of Sony to find the ramshackle hut of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/thom-terrazas/">Thom Terrazas</a> -- and he was expecting us. A fight ensued, with many a chicken flung in anger, not to mention a few pokes in the eye, Three Stooges-style. But in the end, Terrazas capitulated and told us everything we wanted to know.<br />
<br />
Thom Terrazas almost has all his <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE</a> merit badges, having worked on <a href="http://planetside.station.sony.com/"><em>Planetside</em></a>, <a href="http://vgplayers.station.sony.com/"><em>Vanguard</em></a> and now <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/"><em>EverQuest</em></a> in various roles. I was curious -- what was it like to be handed the keys to not just a game, but a veritable institution? Hit the jump to see what Terrazas has to say about his favorite memories, the future of the game, and why <em>EQ </em>hit it out of the park in 1999.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/18/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-neverending-quest-a-cozy-chit-ch/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist and the NeverEnding Quest: A cozy chit-chat with Thom Terrazas</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/18/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-neverending-quest-a-cozy-chit-ch/">The Game Archaeologist and the NeverEnding Quest: A cozy chit-chat with Thom Terrazas</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 18 Jan 2011 14:00:00 EST. Just as a reminder to everyone who missed our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/04/soe-announces-dates-for-fan-faire-2010/">previous announcement</a>, the event will run on the <a href="http://eq2players.station.sony.com/news/read/current/3510">weekend of August 5-8 at Bally's Las Vegas</a>. Fan Faire will take place right in the center of the Vegas Strip, in the same venue as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/06/fan-faire-extras-on-the-latest-official-soe-podcast/">last year</a>. That means even if you find a spare moment away from the events, there will be plenty of nearby attractions to go see.<br />
<br />
The events already announced at Fan Faire include:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Developer panels</li>
    <li>Contests</li>
    <li>Live gaming tournaments</li>
    <li>Tons of prize giveaways</li>
    <li>A vendors area for all your memorabilia needs</li>
</ul>
In addition, <a href="http://station.sony.com">SOE</a> is giving away a <a href="http://events.station.sony.com/fanfaire/">whole mess of bonus items</a> to people who register for the whole weekend, including free digital copies of the upcoming <a href="http://massively.com/tag/everquest"><em>EverQuest</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.com/tag/everquest-2"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> expansions.<br />
<br />
Enough to get you excited? The hopes of breaking news for <a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> is enough to get us hyped up. If you're a big fan of SOE's various titles and have a little vacation time, now might be a good time to start planning!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/08/registration-opens-for-soes-fan-faire/">Registration opens for SOE's Fan Faire</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 08 Apr 2010 19:00:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">For fans of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SonyOnlineEntertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment'</a>s stable of MMO titles, the time has come once again to start making plans for <a href="http://events.station.sony.com/fanfaire/">Fan Faire</a>. It looks like we'll all be heading back to Bally's Hotel in Las Vegas from August 5-8 for a weekend chock-full of all manner of crazy gaming fun with MMO friends. <br />
<br />
This year, they're offering everything from <a href="http://events.station.sony.com/fanfaire/pricing.vm">day passes at $35</a> on up to <a href="http://events.station.sony.com/fanfaire/pricing.vm">a Platinum badge</a> which -- for $135 -- will net you access to all events, plus an additional in-game item, a special swag bag boasting more than just regular Fan Faire goodies, access to a VIP lounge, and even private VIP events. Add to that the <a href="http://events.station.sony.com/fanfaire/hotel_travel_info.vm">room discounts starting at $65 a night</a> for a swanky hotel right on the main Vegas strip, and this could well be a great vacation that just happens to <em>include</em> the awesome fun of this year's SOE Fan Faire. <br />
<br />
For now, there's no details on the schedule of events, but we wouldn't be surprised to see <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/alan-crosby/">Alan "Brenlo" Crosby</a> wedging people into t-shirts three sizes too small, as well as an appearance by of <a href="http://www.thebrasse.com/">one of our favorite Dwarves</a>. If previous years are any indication, this is a should-not-miss event for any serious SOE fan.</div>

Vegas, city of lights, nightlife, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/FanFaire/">Fan Faire</a>! Sony has announced that they will once again be heading for Vegas to party down in high-rolling style. This year they'll be holding the event from <a href="http://events.station.sony.com/fanfaire/">June 25th to 28th at Bally's Hotel</a>. The location they've picked is right in the middle of various Vegas attractions - although we're sure if you're there for the SOE party, you won't need to worry about that too much. <br /><br />Having attended last year's Fan Faire, we can definitely say that it's a great weekend of fun and interesting panels, nice people - and this year's lineup appears to be just as interesting. So far the scheduled events include:<br /><br /><span class="postbody">
<ul>
    <li>Special announcements and sneak peeks of upcoming SOE titles at the Third Annual Community Address from SOE President John Smedley </li>
    <li>Autograph signings with members of the original <em>EQ</em> development team and other key contributors</li>
    <li>Lots of in-game tournaments; and live, game-themed competitions and quests </li>
    <li>Developer forums and roundtables </li>
    <li>Cool giveaways and other fun items! </li>
    <li>Player of the Year</li>
</ul>
To top it all off, prices for Vegas vacations are quite good, currently. So if you've been thinking about getting away, really dig SOE's games - or upcoming titles, and enjoy partying down with a great bunch of friendly, welcoming people, then definitely make some plans to attend this year's Fan Faire. </span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/18/what-happens-at-fan-faire-stays-at-fan-faire/">What happens at Fan Faire, stays at Fan Faire</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 18 Mar 2009 11:00:00 EST. After reading the <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2009/02/05/dc-universe-online-developer-not-sure-if-ps3-pc-gamers-could-happily-co-exist">recent interview between Tracey John of MTV Multiplayer</a> and <a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> developers Wes Yanagi and Jens Andersen, we're left with the impression that bringing the PS3 and PC players to the same servers may be unlikely. There's some legit concerns there, with PC players leaning towards text chat at first, and console players going straight for VOIP, but the question would be - how badly would this hurt the two sides? Some of the more successful console MMOs such as <a href="http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/index.shtml"><em>FFXI</em></a> and <a href="http://phantasystaruniverse.com/"><em>Phantasy Star Universe</em></a> have cross-platform play. Others do not, and while they maintain a community - it seems to be a smaller one on the whole, with any new players often struggling to find anyone - much less an entire <em>group</em>. <br /><br />This morning we thought we'd ask - how important do you feel is cross-platform play to you? Would you, if you liked the game, prefer to play on your PC, or on the console? If you've played <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XI/">Final Fantasy XI</a></em> or <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Phantay-Star-Universe/">Phantay Star Universe</a></em>, do you find yourself avoiding anyone using the PC version due to typing vs VOIP? For that matter, if you're on the PC version, do you avoid those who <em>don't</em> type? At the<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ion08/"> ION '08</a> conference keynote, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/john-smedley/">John Smedley</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/ion-08-john-smedley-keynote-shows-off-free-realms-and-the-agenc/">hinted at another entry</a> in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sony-online-entertainment">SOE</a>'s long-running<a href="http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/"><em> EverQuest</em></a> franchise. Since <a href="http://massively.com/category/everquest/"><em>EverQuest</em></a>'s 1999 release, the venerable fantasy game has been seen in such places as game consoles (<a href="http://everquestonlineadventures.station.sony.com/"><em>EQ Online Adventures</em></a> for the PS2), PDAs (<em><a href="http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/reviews/games/pocketeverquest.htm">The Pocket EverQuest</a></em> trilogy for the Pocket PC), Real Time Strategy (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lords_of_EverQuest"><em>Lords of EverQuest</em></a> for the PC), online collectible card games (<a href="http://legendsofnorrath.station.sony.com/"><em>Legends of Norrath</em></a>) and even versions for cell phones (<a href="http://wireless.ign.com/objects/680/680710.html"><em>EverQuest: Hero's Call</em></a>). What could possibly be next for <em>EverQuest</em>?<br /><br /><em>EverQuest</em> on the PC has already split itself between the original game and its sequel, <a href="http://everquest2.station.sony.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>. Releasing a sequel to a still-viable game was a gutsy move, but it fragmented the player base substantially, to the point where neither game, by itself, can challenge newer games such as <a href="http://lotro.turbine.com/"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>. It's this blogger's opinion that SOE won't make that mistake again -- any <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-3/">EverQuest 3</a></em> would not be for the PC. It's not a huge leap of faith to assume that the next version of <em>EQ</em> would run on the PlayStation 3. SOE recently shifted from Sony Pictures to Sony Computer Entertainment America, makers of the PS3 and publishers of its first-party software. Beyond that, when Smedley mentioned to the Seattle Times that the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/13/soe-bullish-on-mmos-for-the-playstation-3/">PS3 would be a strong platform for MMOs</a>, he certainly very likely had this game (and others we don't know about) in mind.<br /><br />SOE has made some mistakes with <em>EverQuest</em> through the years, but has also had some huge successes and innovations. If you were an <em>EQ3</em> designer, and all you had in front of you was a PS3 and a blank whiteboard, what features would you include to knock the socks off the players? Customizable quests and raids? <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/21/how-eq3-could-change-norrath-forever/">A Steampunk</a> theme? Faster, twitch-based gameplay? The ability to make your own cities? How would you make <em>EQ</em> a worthy competitor to today's great crop of MMOs?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/15/how-would-you-design-everquest-3/">How would you design EverQuest 3?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 15 May 2008 17:00:00 EST. And that's it. The only MMO currently thought to be planned for release on both PC and console (though not at launch) is <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-conan/">Age of Conan</a></em> for the 360. Why is there such a dearth of console MMOs?<br /><br />Many will say that it's because MMOs are so complex and rich that they cannot be managed with a console controller, and that's partly true -- imagine playing <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/">World of Warcraft</a></em> with a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dualshock">DualShock</a> -- but that's more of a design issue. A game meant for consoles, rather than one ported over from the PC, should have such limitations in mind. There's also the closed environment of the console, which is harder to plan patches for, and the still-in-its-infancy online service for the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft">three</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony">major</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo">brands</a>. On the bright side, there would be no need to worry about system specs; every player would be getting the same experience. And there could be added value in game <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achievements#Gamerscore">achievements</a>, which is a system that doesn't currently exist for PC MMOs.<br /><br />Are there more reasons against console MMOs than there are for them? Should developers bother with the consoles at all?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/19/the-daily-grind-why-arent-there-more-console-mmos/">The Daily Grind: Why aren't there more console MMOs?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 19 Apr 2008 08:00:00 EST. Will Wright's surely-a-masterpiece <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/12/spore-finally-evolves-to-retail-sept-7-2008/"><em>Spore</em> got a date</a> earlier this week, and just last night the floodgates <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/13/spore-media-blowout-impressions-images-and-more/">opened on press coverage</a> of it, so we've got lots of new info to drool over in the weeks to come. But Mike, you say to me, <em>Spore</em> isn't an MMO-- why are you talking about it here on Massively?<br /><br />You're right-- it's not an MMO, but it does have MMO qualities: creatures you create in <em>Spore</em> will show up on others' screens and vice versa, via the game's constant online connection. You'll never play a game against someone else, but your game will live in a huge, persistent online world, and your content will become others' as well. We're talking about <em>Spore</em> because it will intersect a lot with the MMO industry this year-- and even more than you may think.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/13/the-intersection-of-spore-and-mmos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The intersection of Spore and MMOs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/13/the-intersection-of-spore-and-mmos/">The intersection of Spore and MMOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 13 Feb 2008 19:30:00 EST. Worley is the Senior Producer for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-online-adventures"><em>EverQuest Online Adventures</em></a>, a casual console MMO experiment Sony released for the PS2 that's somehow still kicking around. The game's audience is super limited (as are the old console's abilities at this point), and so Worley is facing some pretty tough challenges.<br /><br />He says that Sony doesn't think it has the players there to justify an actual expansion, but that they also want new content to be pushed out, so the EQOA team (also rapidly shrinking, apparently, as devs move on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/rise-of-kunark">to newer games</a>) is being asked to make new content, but not too much. Also, the PS2's limited memory doesn't help either-- new content has be released as server-side changes, which, Worley says, makes new art or zones a no-no.<br /><br />Still, they have gotten some cool things done, including some holiday quests and events. To my mind, this would be an amazing environment to experiment in-- because of the small player base, the devs could work very closely with the players to make sure and get the game just right. And the limited memory means that you'd have to experiment with new types of gameplay, not just throwing <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/wrath/">a new coat of paint on the old grinding areas</a>. Who knows how long <em>EQOA</em> will be around, but until they shut the last server down, I'd imagine that team has some cool opportunities on hand.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/22/eqoa-team-struggling-to-put-a-new-game-on-an-old-system/">EQOA team struggling to put a new game on an old system</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 22 Nov 2007 19:00:00 EST. As you're probably already aware, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sony-Online-Entertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> has come out with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/10/30/everquest-halloween-event-live-today-late-start-due-to-fires/">a number</a> of seasonal activities to entertain and delight players in nearly all of their MMOs. Lest it be lost in the shuffle, we thought we'd clue you in on a peculiarly timed event going on in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-online-adventures/"><em>EverQuest Online Adventures</em></a>, the obscure EQ offshoot available only on the Playstation 2.<br /><br />The <em>EQOA</em> crew has revealed that their Fishing Season event <a href="http://www.soepress.com/release.asp?i=152">officially started yesterday</a>, and will run through November 15th. Players cast their rods far and wide in search of special "tagged fish" which can be turned into NPCs for special "certificates of participation." At the end of each week, a GM will bestow a prize on the player who has collected the most certificates for a given week. What is the prize you ask? They don't actually say.
