The big baddie of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2's</em></a> recent living story <a href="https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/may-28-2013/">has been called out</a>. He's Canach, a renegade who thinks that that the answer to every urban planning problem is "more monsters." The Sylvari is behind a plot to use the creatures of Southsun to free settlers from the grasp of the Consortium.<br />
<br />
A showdown with Canach is set to happen when the next chapter of the game's living story rolls out on May 28. The update, titled Last Stand at Southsun, will contain a solo dungeon where players will go mano-a-planto with Canach. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> says that those who defeat Canach will then open up new group content to tackle.<br />
<br />
Other changes on deck include a zone-stomping monster and plenty of changes to world-vs.-world content. Last month saw the huge tenth anniversary <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> Fanfest, a three-day convention packed full of exclusive reveals, behind-the-scenes talks, and community events. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eve-fanfest-2013">This year's Fanfest was the biggest one yet</a>, celebrating <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>'s tenth anniversary with special guest speakers from the scientific community, the reveal of a new virtual reality dogfighter, <a href="http://dust514.com"><em>DUST 514</em></a>'s launch, and details of the upcoming <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/odyssey">Odyssey</a></em> expansion. Massively was there to bring you coverage of the big news as it happened, and CCP streamed some of the key talks and events live to viewers at home.<br />

This year's Fanfest sold out so quickly that many people who wanted to go didn't get a chance to, and only a select few talks were shown on the public livestream. With such a packed event schedule, even players in attendance couldn't be there for every interesting talk. Thankfully, CCP recorded over 30 of the most anticipated events and has now uploaded the videos to YouTube. Highlights include the Make EVE Real videos, the EVE keynote, the CCP Presents Keynote, and the talks on how <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514/"><em>DUST 514</em></a> integrates with the<em> EVE</em> economy.<br />

Who says we can't get what we want? I wanted the Shugo Kingdom Adventure event to return to <em><a href="http://na.aiononline.com/en/">Aion</a></em>, and I'm getting my wish. Booyah! No, really, it's true: Starting after maintenance on May 22nd, Daevas who've flown over level 50 will again be able to journey for a limited time to the long lost vaults of the Shugo Kingdom in search of great and glorious treasure. And by treasure, I mean a trove of chests filled with AP items, Stormwing armor pieces and weapons, or even rare sets of wings. Of course what you get depends on how many keys you have and a little luck, so there's no harm in starting your sacrifices to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion/"><em>Aion's</em></a> RNG gods now.<br />

Last year, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> threw a new ingredient into its convention mix -- player panels. The result was such a hit that the studio is not only bringing them back this year, but extending their availability; Sunday has been added to the player panels schedule, and that means there are plenty of openings!<br />

Do you have a subject involving any SOE game that you think would be of interest and benefit others? Maybe you are a whiz at livesteaming or you have primo tips and tricks on cosplay to dispense. What about sharing your fan site or holding a raid clinic? Whatever your idea, <a href="https://www.soe.com/soelive/news-article.vm?id=006">submit your proposal</a> by 3:00 a.m EDT June 1st for consideration. If selected, you and up to three other panel members will receive All Access passes to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE-Live-2013/">SOE Live 2013</a> (no other expenses are covered, including food, travel, or add-ons). The results are in for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EVE-Online/">EVE Online</a></em>'s eighth <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/council-of-stellar-management/">Council of Stellar Management</a> (CSM8) as announced by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Hilmar-Veigar-Petursson/">Hilmar Veigar P&eacute;tursson</a> during EVE Fanfest this weekend in Reykjavik, Iceland.<br />
<br />
Since this is the first time the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/21/eve-online-makes-big-changes-to-csm-elections/">Single Transferrable Vote mechanic</a> has been used, each elected member received the necessary amount of votes (out of a total 49,702 votes) to get onto the CSM. When the council convenes for the first time, a chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, and vice-secretary will be chosen.<br />

As <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/25/eve-fanfest-2013-day-one-dust-514-wormholes-and-lowsec-pvp/">tenth anniversary Fanfest slowly got underway</a>, the press were led into a small upstairs room with chairs lined up and ominous-looking black headsets. The headsets turned out to be expensive prototype devkits of the <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1523379957/oculus-rift-step-into-the-game">Oculus Rift, a recently kickstarted PC peripheral</a> that aims to make immersive virtual reality affordable for gamers. VR headsets are traditionally heavy monstrosities costing thousands of pounds and usually have input processing lag that make them unsuitable for high-action gaming, but the Oculus Rift is a light and highly responsive device currently clocking in at a more reasonable $300.<br />
<br />
We were sat down to take part in a demo of <em>EVR</em>, a new virtual reality multiplayer dogfighter that uses art assets from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a>. It was an incredibly immersive experience for those of us unfamiliar with the Oculus Rift, and even members of the press who had used the device seemed impressed with the game. Fanfest attendees were equally excited when a trailer for EVR was shown at the <em>EVE</em> Keynote on Friday, and many attendees got to try the game first hand last night. But what impressed me the most was the story behind the demo's creation and the possibilities that Oculus Rift could potentially open up if support for it were brought to <em>EVE Online</em>.<br />

We usually don't expect to see much from the final day <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/26/eve-fanfest-2013-day-two-world-of-darkness-odyssey-and-eve-vi/">of the EVE Fanfest</a>, but for this year's tenth anniversary celebration, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CCP/">CCP</a> isn't doing anything by half measures. The first two days of the event had a strong focus on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514/"><em>DUST 514</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, delving into the specific details of <em>DUST</em>'s upcoming Uprising update and <em>EVE</em>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/odyssey"><em>Odyssey</em></a> expansion. I went into the convention centre today expecting a nice slow wind down with the usual CCP Presents keynote looking at the state of the company, but I left with several huge reveals that seemed to come out of nowhere.<br />
<br />
Not only did we find out that <em>EVE Online</em> is finally <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/27/eve-online-second-decade-collectors-edition-revealed/">getting a collector's edition box full of goodies</a>, but CCP revealed that a new <em>EVE</em> comic book and lore compendium are both on the way. As if that weren't enough, there's also <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/27/true-stories-of-eve-online-to-become-comic-book-and-tv-series/">an <em>EVE</em> TV series in the works</a> based on player-submitted stories of true events inside the <em>EVE</em> universe. I couldn't help escaping the feeling, though, that this year's CCP Presents talk was more than a little marketing-oriented. As one of the press put it to me after the talk, it felt at times like watching an infomercial. On the plus side, we did get to see more of CCP's future vision for the <em>EVE</em> universe and an amazing new trailer showing the game's core storyline.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CCPGames/">CCP Games</a> has just announced at this weekend's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/EVEFanfest/">EVE Fanfest</a> that the wait for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DUST-514/">DUST 514</a></em> will soon be over: <em>DUST 514</em> is launching on May 14th.<br />
<br />
The free-to-play PlayStation 3 shooter is built to connect with CCP's sci-fi MMORPG sandbox, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EVE-Online/">EVE Online</a></em>; players in one game can directly influence the players in the other.<br />
<br />
"Gamers can look forward to an ever-progressing game, built on the experience CCP has gathered over the past decade, as new features and upgrades are rolled out for years to come," declares the press release posted today. Massively published a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/22/hands-on-with-dust-514-on-the-cusp-of-open-beta/">hands-on with the game in January</a>.<br />

The CCP Presents Keynote <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/26/eve-fanfest-2013-day-two-world-of-darkness-odyssey-and-eve-vi/">at the annual EVE Online Fanfest</a> is usually a fairly tame retrospective on how CCP has a company has done the past year and where it's going in the future, but for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a>'s tenth anniversary, CCP broke out the big guns. In addition to announcing a massive new collector's edition, the studio has also revealed plans to turn real stories of events inside the sandbox into professional comic books and even a TV series.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Horse_Comics">Industry giant Dark Horse Comics</a>, the company responsible for comics like Hellboy and Sin City, will be publishing the 54-page graphic novel this winter in both a paid-for print form and a free digital download. For the lore buffs among us, Dark Horse will also be producing a colossal 184-page glossy colour hardback book covering all of the NPC backstory and lore behind <em>EVE Online</em> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a>. Moments ago at <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/26/eve-fanfest-2013-day-two-world-of-darkness-odyssey-and-eve-vi/">tenth anniversary Fanfest</a>, CCP revealed plans for its Second Decade Collector's Edition box. <em>EVE</em> never really had a proper collector's edition, and the tenth anniversary of the game is the perfect opportunity to release one. The box will come with an awesome physical Rifter model that doubles as a USB hub, a CD of the tenth anniversary <em>EVE</em> symphony from this year's Fanfest, and a series of codes to redeem to cosmetic items in <em>EVE Online</em> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a>. <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s tenth anniversary Fanfest <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/25/eve-fanfest-2013-day-one-dust-514-wormholes-and-lowsec-pvp/">promised to be its biggest yet</a>, with over 1,400 players packed into Iceland's Harpa convention centre to find out the latest on <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/">EVE Online</a></em>, <a href="http://www.dust514.com"><em>DUST 514</em></a>, and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-darkness/">World of Darkness</a></em>. The first day focused mainly on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DUST-514/"><em>DUST</em></a> and its link with the <em>EVE</em> universe, but today the focus largely switched back to internet spaceships. There were plenty of roundtable discussions, and the CSM and Alliance panels were as awesome as ever, but it was the <em>EVE</em> Keynote that really blew the crowd away.<br />

The day got off to a good start with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/26/world-of-darkness-development-shown-at-eve-fanfest-2013/">the highly anticipated <em>World of Darkness</em> talk</a>. Most fans were probably expecting to see more airy game design ideas and another shiny trailer, but this year CCP just came out and put all its cards on the table. We saw that the game is still firmly in pre-production, with much of the previous work going into developing the engine and cool content creation tools and shaders. While I was initially disappointed at the lack of gameplay progress or shiny cinematics, I found this approach of being open and direct with fans very refreshing. As I told <em>WoD</em> art director Thomas Holt, honest beats shiny every time.<br />

Details of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s exploration-focused <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/odyssey/">Odyssey</a></em> expansion have been floating around since PAX East, but it seems the company saved some pretty huge changes to reveal at this year's tenth anniversary Fanfest. In <a href="http://community.eveonline.com/news/dev-blogs/resource-shakeup-blog/">two massive devblogs accompanying today's <em>EVE Online</em> Keynote speech</a>, CCP Fozzie discussed plans to overhaul <em>EVE</em>'s entire resource distribution system. Everything from asteroid and ice mining to moon harvesting and nullsec industry will be affected by the revamp.<br />
<br />
Miners will find their ice belts have been moved from static locations to hidden exploration sites that have to be scanned down, but to compensate it will now mine at double the normal rate. Normal asteroid mining in lowsec and nullsec is also due for a buff with the addition of large quantities of low-end minerals. Hidden asteroid belts will no longer need to be probed down but can be quickly located with the new Discovery scanner, and to top it off there'll even be new high quality ore sites that can only be found in prime areas of nullsec.<br />
<br />
Outpost industrial infrastructure is due for an update with new purchaseable upgrade paths expanding factory, office and research lab capabilities to the same level as fully-fledged empire stations. Lastly, moon minerals are finally being addressed with a redistribution of rare materials and several new reaction paths to bypass current bottlenecks. A lot of value will be moved from Technetium back to rarer materials like Thulium, Neodymium, Promethium and Dysprosium, and new supplies of all four will be distributed randomly into moons across the universe. Re-scan all of your nearby moons when Odyssey lands because it could suddenly be worth a fortune!<br />

Not too long ago, I had the opportunity to cover an occasion during which an in-game community came together and created a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/16/the-tattered-notebook-eqiis-ribbitribbit-day-celebrates-commun/">new player-run annual event</a>. Born as an anniversary follow-up to a service event for the young terminally ill player <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ribbitribbit/">Ribbitribbit</a>, the new tradition focused on celebrating that very community that pulled together to create him a dream playground within <em><a href="https://www.everquest2.com/">EverQuest II</a></em>. If the game lacked a sense of community in the game before that original project, it certainly didn't after.<br />
<br />
After tugging at my heartstrings for a while, that experience made me reflect on how much our communities are really a cornerstone of player-generated content. How often have you attended or participated in an event or run a mission created by someone other than yourself? And yet, when discussing important tools and elements needed to support player-generated content, we often overlook the necessity of a vibrant community. It's like trying to bake a cake without adding the flour. Or how about this analogy: You can give folks a giant tool box full of a shiny implements and tell them to build a house, but not much will happen without the actual wood and materials! When the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-darkness/"><em>World of Darkness</em></a> MMO was first announced in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_of_Darkness#World_of_Darkness_MMORPG">November 2006</a>, it was just an idea and we knew that it wouldn't be released any time soon. The chance to play a sandbox game set in the Vampire: The Masquerade universe nevertheless made fans of the series go nuts, but now over six years later we haven't seen much progress on the game. At <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/26/what-to-expect-from-eve-fanfest-2013-world-of-darkness-eve-key/">EVE Fanfest 2013 today</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> laid the current state of development bare for all to see and showed some plans for the coming year. There are now 70 people on the <em>WoD</em> team, and they've spent the past week working on everything from art tools and server infrastructure to vampire powers and social options.<br />

Development plans for 2013 include working on out-of-game web-based social tools, clothing systems, and PvE game environments. There are also plans to work on item creation, but direct crafting is probably not on the cards. As the presenter put it, "You're a powerful, immortal lord of the night. You don't want to stitch a shirt." Though the game is still in the pre-production stage, CCP was keen to show off the tools it's made to speed up the development process. The second day of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/25/what-to-expect-from-eve-fanfest-2013-today-dust-514-keynote-and/">EVE Fanfest 2013 is now underway</a>, and the schedule is packed! Today kicks off with a highly anticipated talk on <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-darkness/">World of Darkness</a></em> at 7:00 a.m. EDT, and continues with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/council-of-stellar-management">CSM</a> Panel at 8:00 a.m. EDT, Alliance Panel at 9:00 a.m. EDT and Art Panel at 10:00 a.m. EDT. The CSM and Alliance panels are usually filled with hilarious banter, but this year the CSM Panel happens at the same time as the Faction Warfare roundtable and a talk on <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514/">DUST 514</a></em> planet conquering in lowsec. The big event today is of course the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> Keynote at 1:00 p.m. EDT, where we'll find out details of the upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/odyssey"><em>Odyssey</em></a> expansion.<br />
<br />
<em>World of Darkness</em> is still pretty early in development, so the presentation will be talking mostly about the tools being used to build it. We're unlikely to get a release schedule or any solid gameplay demos, but with developers raving about their internal play-tests I expect to see some serious progress compared to last year. The 10th anniversary <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> Fanfest is beyond massive, with over 1,400 players piling into Reykjavik's Harpa building for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/14/eve-evolved-massivelys-plans-for-eve-fanfest-2013/">three days of intense internet spaceshippery</a>. Players fly from across the world to meet their corpmates and chat with other players as passionate about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> as they are. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CCP/">CCP</a> runs a packed schedule of game design presentations, reveals, and roundtable discussions with players, but for many attendees, the event is about being a part of a tight-knit community that usually exists only inside a game server.<br />
<br />
CCP made the bold statement to the press team this morning that its goal is "to create virtual worlds more meaningful than real life," and with so many people flying across the world to meet other players face to face, I'd say the studio has succeeded. Today saw talks on <em>EVE's</em> hugely successful <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Retribution/">Retribution</a></em> expansion, ship rebalancing, map generation in <a href="http://www.dust514.com"><em>DUST 514</em></a>, and lowsec PvP, and of course, we attended the <em>DUST 514</em> keynote speech. <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s colossal <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/14/eve-evolved-massivelys-plans-for-eve-fanfest-2013/">tenth anniversary Fanfest</a> hasn't even officially begun, but the excitement from attendees is already practically palpable. The Reykjavik nightlife has been invaded by hundreds of foreigners yelling about internet spaceships as players from around the world reunite with their online comrades and meet corpmates for the first time. Over the course of the weekend, a record 1,400 <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> fans and hundreds more press and partners will flood into the Harpa building for non-stop news and festivities from <em>EVE Online</em>, <a href="http://www.dust514.com"><em>DUST 514</em></a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-darkness/"><em>World of Darkness</em></a>.<br />

The <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/en/stream/free">talks and events start later today</a>, but last night CCP kicked off the festivities with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra delivering stunning renditions of tracks from the <em>EVE Online</em> soundtrack. Today, I'll be reporting back from key talks including the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/retribution/"><em>Retribution</em></a> expansion roundup at 8 a.m. EDT (noon GMT), ship rebalancing at 9 a.m. EDT (1 p.m. GMT), lowsec PvP and crimewatch at noon EDT (4 p.m. GMT), and of course, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514/"><em>DUST 514</em></a> keynote speech at 2 p.m. EDT (6 p.m. GMT). I may also be able to join in on the roundtable discussion on wormholes and live events at 10 a.m. EDT (2 p.m. GMT) for an inside look at CCP's current thoughts. <a href="http://web.ccpgamescdn.com/fanfest/2013/FF2013_Program_Book.pdf">Check out the Fanfest timetable</a> and let me know if there's something interesting you think I should try to squeeze in.<br />

I'd expect the tone of these talks to be one of looking back at another successful year and the great player response to the <em>Retribution</em> expansion. We probably won't hear much of anything about the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/odyssey/"><em>Odyssey</em></a> expansion today, but I do expect some big <em>DUST 514</em> news from the keynote. While many are probably hoping for word of a PC release, I'd be very surprised to see CCP actually do it. We'll most likely just get a release schedule for the PS3 launch and possibly footage of the game running on a PS4 devkit. I'm personally also hoping for more details on post-release updates such as the ability for <em>DUST</em> corps to own and manage their own territory and industrial supply chains.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/14/eve-evolved-massivelys-plans-for-eve-fanfest-2013/"><em>EVE</em> Fanfest is next week</a> and the faithful are preparing to descend upon Reykjavik, Iceland, for the three-day convention. If you're one of the travelers who are heading there or are just looking to follow along on livestream, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/en/info/program">has released the full program</a> with the event's schedule.<br />

Fanfest will have three keynotes about the past, present, and future of CCP's titles, respectively. There will also be several panels, including one discussing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online's</em></a> inclusion in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/29/eve-online-coming-to-nycs-museum-of-modern-art/">the New York Museum of Modern Art</a>.<br />

<em>EVE Online </em>also released <a href="http://community.eveonline.com/news/dev-blogs/client-modification-the-eula-and-you/">a new dev blog</a> talking about the team's war on unauthorized client modification and violations of the EULA. The Crystalline Entity encounter in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> is back, as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic">Cryptic</a> has refurbished the event to make it better than ever before. Starting on April 11th, <a href="http://sto.perfectworld.com/news/?p=859041">players will be able to tackle the Entity</a> in 10-person encounters while completing a brand-new project for the game.<br />
<br />
Systems Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeremy-randall">Jeremy Randall</a> explains that the team wasn't happy with the original Crystalline Entity encounter and thus brought it back to the drawing board to make it more engaging. The reworked event now has new features and allows players of all types to participate. The Tholians are now involved as well, although their role is somewhat of a mystery.<br />
<br />
As part of the reintroduction of the event, Cryptic is running a three-week promotion where players can earn crystal shards for defeating the entity. One shard can be earned per day, and it takes 14 shards to complete the project. Although there is no <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/some-assembly-required">Some Assembly Required</a> in the title, don't let that fool you; today's focus is on one of the founding precepts of this column, player-generated content. It's just not sandboxy player-generated content like we've covered before. Today's special edition explores the PGC proposed for the decidedly non-sandbox action RPG <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/path-of-exile">Path of Exile</a></em>.<br />

At <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013">GDC</a> I sat down with managing director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chris-wilson/">Chris Wilson</a> and technical director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jonathan-rogers/">Jonathan Rogers</a> to discuss <em>Path of Exile</em> and their idea of adding player-run races to the game. A fan favorite, these timed gaming experiences are currently only officially sponsored events grouped into seasons, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/20/path-of-exiles-season-one-race-events-start-february-23rd/">the first of which</a> just concluded. Good news! (Well, at least for my police record.) As it turns out, I didn't have to resort to kidnapping to convince someone from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> to talk to me about <em><a href="http://na.aiononline.com/">Aion</a></em> at this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013">GDC</a>. I swear, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sean-Orlikowski/">Sean Orlikowski</a>, the game's associate producer, came willingly.<br />
<br />
It does, however, appear that in the fine print of the meeting proposal, I agreed to be outfitted with a special electronic device that would send massive jolts of electricity through my system if I tried to speak about something I shouldn't. So let's see how much I can share with you before this apparatus leaves me unconscious.<br />

Can I tell you that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion/"><em>Aion</em></a> has a special celebration planned for the first anniversary of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/truly-free/">Truly Free</a> conversion? So far, so good, folks. Hmm... can I add that the next big expansion has a North American launch date planned without going unconscious... oh, appears so! OK, let's push this a little further: How about if I happened to mention that 4.0 will hit servers in June 2013 -- would I be zapped? Nope! It may seem like a while has passed since we last experienced <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-steam/"><em>City of Steam</em></a>, the fantasy steampunk MMORPG that fits in your browser. That's because it has! The game's last <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/12/city-of-steam-double-feature-a-beta-trailer-and-a-steam-greenli/">closed beta testing</a> round was back in December, and fans have been eagerly waiting to get back into the city-state of Nexus. Of course there has been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/31/city-of-steams-bestiary-gives-pre-launch-advantage/">some</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/02/mechanist-says-no-to-huge-pauldrons-revamps-city-of-steam-npc-d/">news</a> to tide us over in the meantime while developers have been turning all of that beta feedback into fixes and updates, but that's not the same; people want to play. Luckily, it's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013">GDC </a>to the rescue!<br />

While the rest of the world won't actually get to access <em>City of Steam</em> until it launches open beta (which is anticipated to be within the next two months!), I was able to dive in and explore the fruits of the devs' winter labors. And let me tell you, they've put their time to good use! I met with Communications Manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Gabriel-Laforge/">Gabriel Laforge</a> and Operations Director Andrew Woodruff from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mechanist-games">Mechanist Games</a> who showed off all the work that has gone into the game since the beta closed, from graphics to crafting to airships. At a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013">GDC</a> panel titled "Next Generation Character Rendering" last week, research and development staffers at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Activision/">Activision</a>-<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a> showed off some stunning computer-generated portraits. The catch? They don't represent in-game assets; instead, they showcase the tech behind the graphics.<br />
<br />
So while these we won't be seeing the lady above as the protagonist of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Titan/">Titan</a>,</em> it's reasonable to expect that the characters of Blizzard's future games could look just as convincing and real. When we talk about getting our hands on a game at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013/">GDC</a> for a little playtime, we don't usually get to literally grasp said game in our fingers. But that's exactly what happened when I tested out <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/vendetta-online">Vendetta Online</a></em> on an iPad 3; instead of just relating to the space-based sandbox through the standard accessories like mouse, keyboard, or joystick, I held the entirety of the game universe in the palms of my hands. My own 10 digits were the only accessories. And the experience impressed me!<br />

As I wound down my time at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX-East-2013/">PAX East</a> recently, I couldn't help but notice how different this convention was compared to when I went a couple of years ago. Yes, the exhibition floor was bigger, and there were many more in attendance, but the overall feel was different as well, and part of that was the increased presence of children.<br />

We normally don't think of a video game convention as a family activity, and yet the fact that so many adults brought their children is telling. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/-World-of-Warplanes/"> World of Warplanes</a></em> is still in testing, but it's been playable at a few events now and has staked its claim as a distinct entity from <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Tanks/">World of Tanks</a></em>. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Wargaming.net/">Wargaming.net</a>'s CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Victor-Kislyi/">Victor Kislyi</a> and global operations director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Vlad-Beloserov/">Vlad Beloserov</a> were at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013/">GDC</a> recently showing off more highlights from the game, which promises to deliver exactly the sort of high-energy dogfights you would hope for.<br />
<br />
As it stands now, the game has about 10 maps and 100 planes. Each of the planes can be fully customized, while each map is meant to play differently rather than just being different background scenery -- some maps are foggy, some have skyscrapers or mountains, some are set at different times of day, and so forth.<br />
<br />
Actual gameplay has continued to receive polish tweaks; the game retains both easy and expert control modes, with the latter playing more like a flight simulator and the former allowing you to simply point your mouse in the direction you want to fly. Enemy planes and your own can be riddled with holes that show the sky through your shredded wings, and the UI allows you to track your plane's optimal speed and altitude to maximize performance in combat.<br />
<br />
One extra tidbit revealed on the show floor was that players of both <em>World of Tanks </em>and <em>World of Warplanes</em> can reap extra benefits from both games, as experience earned in the former can be used to improve in the latter. While there's no set release date for the game at this time, the game continues to impress and will be flying into more open testing as soon as Wargaming.net's teams are happy with its performance in smaller test venues.<br />

By now, pretty much everyone knows the story of how <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamers-first">GamersFirst</a> swept in to save the DOA <em>All Points Bulletin</em> by relaunching it as <a href="http://apbreloaded.gamersfirst.com/"><em>APB: Reloaded</em></a>. Since then, the title's done immensely well for the company and has prompted <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Reloaded-Games/">Reloaded Games</a> to look into turning <a href="http://apbreloaded.gamersfirst.com/"><em>APB</em></a> into a bona fide franchise.<br />
<br />
How this happened was explained to us by PR Manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/darek-connole">Darek Connole</a> at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013">GDC</a>. Connole said that the devs are constantly taking suggestions from the community and sorting them into different buckets. While some of the buckets represent doable ideas, one bucket is full of great ideas that are impossible to implement in the current game.<br />

"We're taking the NPCs from <em>APB: Reloaded</em> and bringing them into their own game," Connole said. "It's going to be a traditional first-person shooter, but it's also going to have non-traditional elements."<br />

Hey, is that CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chris-taylor">Chris Taylor</a> from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gas-powered-games">Gas Powered Games</a>? By jove, it is! At <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013">GDC</a> this past week we had the opportunity to catch up with Taylor and see how his studio is doing following its acquisition by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wargaming.net">Wargaming.net</a>. He said that the synergy between his studio and Wargaming.net is powerful: "Our overlap is enormous between what we believe in as a company and what Wargaming believes in."<br />

We were most curious about the "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/21/gas-powered-games-working-on-mystery-mmo/">mystery MMO</a>" that Taylor and his team is constructing. "We are doing research and prototyping on our first Wargaming game," Taylor said, "which will be a huge PvP, free-to-play MMO. It's going to take a little while to get it rolling, and we'll talk about it more once we know it is exactly. We'll announce it down the road."<br />

Is there anything else that he was willing to share about it? Taylor paused and said, "It's going to be the biggest game we've ever made."<br />

Everyone at the completely fictional Massively office seems to have some kind of schoolgirl crush on <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/carbine-studios">Carbine Studios'</a> quirky upcoming sci-fi title <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/wildstar">WildStar</a></em>, and I can understand why. The setting is fresh, melding some aspects of our favorite sci-fi properties (cough Firefly cough) with a a healthy dose of fantasy and a not insignificant amount of witty comedy, and the list of features the game boasts is rather extensive. I mean, did you even see <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/22/pax-east-2013-a-first-look-at-wildstars-high-low-and-housing/">that housing trailer</a>? Holy wow, guys.<br />
<br />
In spite of all of that, though, I was still a little cautious about giving in to the hype. After all, I'm sure there's not an MMO fan in existence who hasn't gotten super excited about a game and become a devoted fanboy only to have his hopes and expectations shattered when the game didn't live up to the hype. So I let myself be excited, but reservedly so, until I could get my hands on the game for myself to complement <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/23/pax-east-2013-hands-on-with-wildstars-spellslinger-and-warrior/">Eliot's earlier PAX hands-on with the game</a>. As it so happens, on the last day of <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/pax-east-2013">PAX East</a>, I got to do just that. Last week I promised to bring you all of the hard-hitting coverage of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Square-Enix/">Square-Enix</a>'s presence at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX-East-2013/">PAX East 2013</a> as it pertained to <a href="http://www.playonline.com"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a> and <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a>. So here's that coverage: <em>Both games still exist</em>.<br />

We good? Great. I'll spend the next nine hundred words or so discussing cats, then. Seriously, if you've been following this site or this column, you know everything from PAX East already.<br />

Of course, all of this underscores what I see as a simple fact: PAX was not meant for fans of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XI/">Final Fantasy XI</a></em> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/">Final Fantasy XIV</a></em>. If you scan fansites and this site for coverage, you would not be blown away by any of this information, and that's fine. I had the opportunity to sit down with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chris-roberts">Chris Roberts</a> and talk about his highly anticipated space sim sandbox, <em><a href="http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/">Star Citizen</a></em>. We talked lore, the game's PvP/PvE sliders and living universe concepts, guilds, and when players can expect to get in some dogfighting. Roberts also delved deeply into the crafting and economic aspects of the game.<br />

Still, he meets the success with some bemusement, especially considering how notoriously difficult the mod is to install.
