You might notice that the <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/hyperspace-beacon">Hyperspace Beacon</a> changed its face a bit. That's because I'm reporting from the Guild Summit in Austin, Texas -- <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare</a>'s headquarters. Over 250 guilds and fan sites were invited to not only see the team's plans for <a href="http://swtor.com/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> but also voice their ideas for what they want from the game.<br />
<br />
Of course, a game carrying the Star Wars name appeals to a large diverse group of people, and not just because of the Star Wars IP; BioWare has created a name for itself with incredible story-driven games like <a href="http://masseffect.com"><em>Mass Effect 3</em></a>, which released this morning. Among the pre-summit discussion was the question of whether and how much BioWare leans on the Star Wars IP for the success of the game. The consensus among the guild leaders I spoke to was an interesting and surprising one: Although BioWare certainly leaned on Star Wars for the story elements of the game, the lack of huge success for the most recent <a href="http://lucasarts.com">LucasArts</a> games suggests that the Star Wars IP actually leaned on <em>BioWare's</em> reputation.<br />
<br />
When I jumped into Q&amp;A with the guild leaders, I half-expected a bunch of over-enthusiastic fanboys. I was pleasantly surprised to find that, although they were fans, those invited to this summit were very level-headed and oftentimes critical of the game's development. Thankfully, during the course of the summit, the developers were equally willing to address these concerns.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/06/hyperspace-beacon-one-step-forward/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: One step forward...</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/06/hyperspace-beacon-one-step-forward/">Hyperspace Beacon: One step forward...</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 06 Mar 2012 14:00:00 EST. The 2011 <a href="http://www.thegrandmasquerade.com/">Grand Masquerade</a> in New Orleans is over, and the monsters have all gone home. In their wake, we're left with a series of exciting revelations relating to the upcoming <em><a href="http://www.ccpgames.com/en/products/world-of-darkness">World of Darkness</a></em> by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CCPGames/">CCP Games</a>. While it's only in pre-production, it has already sent fans of the <a href="http://wiki.white-wolf.com/worldofdarkness/index.php?title=Main_Page">World of Darkness</a> setting into a frenzy of anticipation. The new details only give rise to more questions, however, and speculation has run rampant, especially given how radically CCP's new game departs from the standard MMO model. Thankfully, Massively has some answers.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Shane-Defreest/">Shane Defreest</a>, the Community Developer for CCP North America and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/White-Wolf-Publishing/">White Wolf Publishing</a>, was kind enough to take the time out of his hectic schedule to answer a few of our questions relating to the game. He sheds a bit of light on <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Darkness/">World of Darkness</a></em>, discussing the choice of setting, player factions and playable clans, the business model, and how he views the experience of the game. Enjoy!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/22/massively-exclusive-world-of-darkness-interview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively Exclusive: World of Darkness interview</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/22/massively-exclusive-world-of-darkness-interview/">Massively Exclusive: World of Darkness interview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 22 Sep 2011 10:00:00 EST. The mass global conspiracy to hide the insidious secrets from the public cracked wide open as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom/">Funcom</a> revealed that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em></a> is set to reveal the truth at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom/">Gamescom</a>.<br />
<br />
If you're 16 years or older and attending the convention, head over to Hall 6 to check out Funcom's closed theater where a 20-minute live demo of one of the game's dungeons, The Polaris, will take place. Developers will also be on hand to talk about dungeon crawling, combat, progression, the skill wheel, and boss fights during the presentation.<br />
<br />
All players, regardless of age, can take an "initiation test" to see what secret society they should join -- sort of like a much more sinister sorting hat or guidance counselor.<br />
<br />
The studio will also be talking to the press about large-scale PvP, so hopefully we'll be learning more details about this aspect of the game next week!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/12/conspiracy-unleashed-funcom-reveals-the-secret-world-plans-for/">Conspiracy unleashed: Funcom reveals The Secret World plans for Gamescom</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 12 Aug 2011 19:00:00 EST. The third and final day of festivities at the massive <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> Fanfest has come to an end, and it was definitely worth waiting for. There were several round-table discussions and events going on today, but the event everyone was looking forward to was definitely the "CCP Presents" talk in the afternoon. With <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/25/eve-fanfest-2011-keynote-from-the-top-of-the-world/">yesterday's keynote speech</a> wrapping up <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/25/eve-online-fanfest-2011-roundup-day-2/">all the awesome plans CCP has</a> for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> this year, it wasn't certain exactly what had been saved for today's show. Yesterday we heard details of the <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/incarna"><em>Incarna</em></a> captain's quarters, server upgrades, new turret effects, new nebulae and more.<br />
<br />
Highlights of today included a round-table discussion on how <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> would be linking <em>EVE</em> with <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a>, the hilarious finals of the Fanfest PvP tournament and the CCP Presents feature. This was followed by the CCP panel, in which developers answered questions from the audience. Having spent three days watching developers talk about the future of <em>EVE</em>, I get the distinct impression that many of them have as much passion for <em>EVE</em> as even the most fanatical <em>EVE</em> players.<br />

<div>
	It's day two of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP</a>'s enormous party at the top of the world, and Massively is right here to find out what the future holds for <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>. In yesterday's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/24/eve-online-fanfest-2011-roundup-day-1/">day 1 roundup</a>, we covered a fantastic presentation on <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/incursion"><em>Incursion</em></a> by <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ccp-soundwave">CCP Soundwave</a>, an enlightening question-and-answer session with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/council-of-stellar-management">Council of Stellar Management</a>, and the hilarious (but absolutely not work-safe) alliance leader panel. Today has been similarly packed with activity. We've seen some great presentations on what's to come in the summer expansion, and the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/25/eve-fanfest-2011-keynote-from-the-top-of-the-world/">keynote speech</a> discussed some very exciting developments due to hit <em>EVE</em> in the near future.<br />
	<br />
	Highlights of today included a video of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/incarna"><em>Incarna</em></a>'s "captain's quarters" that we'll be getting as part of the summer expansion, details of massive server upgrades heading to Tranquility, and details of some awesome quality-of-life changes coming soon thanks to Team Best Friends Forever. There was so much awesome information to share that we unfortunately had to miss <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaBWBmYfqVQ&amp;hd=1">the chessboxing match</a> to get it out in a timely manner. We missed Icelandic game developers punching each other in the face to write this up, so I hope you find it interesting!<br />

This week, Massively's own <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/shawn-schuster/">Shawn</a> &amp; <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/rubi-bayer">Rubi</a> are headed out to San Francisco to check out all the sights and sounds of this year's <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/gdc">Game Developers Conference</a>. In fact, this year marks the 25th anniversary of the event, one that has grown from a small gathering held in someone's house into an enormous industry-wide event. There are tons of topics to look forward to, from intricate development issues to the wider ramifications of online and social gaming.<br />
<br />
Given how many varied and <a href="http://schedule.gdconf.com/session">interesting panels, discussions and more</a> bedeck the conference's schedule, we thought we'd ask whether there's anything in particular you're hoping to hear from this year's event. Are there any games or topics you're really craving more news about? Grab your morning cuppa wake-up beverage goodness, <a href="http://schedule.gdconf.com/session">check out the schedule</a>, and tell us what you're hoping to learn more about in our upcoming <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/gdc-2011">GDC 2011</a> coverage!<br />

Given our notable absence from the largest international game expo of the year, we decided to partner with our friends at Maverick for their impressions of the event and make use of their professional video resources. Those cameras aren't cheap!<br />
<br />
So what is Maverick Media? It's a creative agency that conceives and produces trailers, television commercials and in-game cinematics for video game publishers and developers. The team consists of the guys behind the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiyazhKkK4M"><em>Crysis 2</em> "The Wall" trailer</a>, the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIvlHQedCwY"><em>Bayonetta</em> "In for the Kill" commercials</a>, and all of the <a href="http://www.littlebigplanet.com/"><em>Little Big Planet</em></a> in-game tutorials and intro sequence. In the MMO world, they recently worked with Jagex on the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/10/jagex-releases-stellar-dawn-teaser/">"Brace for Impact" teaser trailer</a> for <a href="http://www.stellardawn.com/date_of_birth.ws?status=0&amp;targetmod=www&amp;targetpage="><em>Stellar Dawn</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Our combined aim at this year's Gamescom was to gather opinions and insights from informed game execs working in the emerging games space, focusing on their ideas and plans for attracting new gamers into their communities. You'll find part one just after the jump below -- look for part two to drop later this week!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/24/a-look-at-gamescom-2010-part-one/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A look at Gamescom 2010: Part one</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/24/a-look-at-gamescom-2010-part-one/">A look at Gamescom 2010: Part one</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 16:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a> has announced that they won't be appearing at E3 -- their big convention season announcement was that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/02/arenanet-announces-first-hands-on-demo-of-guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em> will be playable at other venues</a>. Turbine dropped the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/04/lord-of-the-rings-online-going-free-to-play-this-fall/">free-to-play bomb</a> just over a week ago. <br />
<br />
It seems like we just might have reached our quota of huge MMO announcements this week, but since E3 has not been cancelled, we can only assume that there's more to come. Massively will be bringing you all the latest E3 news this week, but in the meantime, we want to know what you are hoping and expecting to hear from the event.<br />

I bet you thought we were done with news from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2010">GDC 2010</a>, right? Well, not exactly. The embargo on our demo of <a href="http://www.darkdaysarecoming.com/"><em>The Secret World</em></a> lifts today and we're oh-so eager to tell you all about what we saw.<br />
<br />
While Creative Director <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ragnar_T%C3%B8rnquist">Ragnar T&oslash;rnquist</a>'s team at <a href="http://www.funcom.com">Funcom</a> has been doing an excellent job of teasing us with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/23/arg-the-secret-world-community-uncovers-hidden-monster-blog/">just enough information to keep us excited</a> (although they'll deny the websites are from them), there are still many aspects of the game we have yet to discover. This GDC demo doesn't even scratch the surface on what we can expect from the released game, but it gives us quite a bit more to chew on until that time comes.<br />
<br />
Follow along after the jump for our impressions of what we saw in the game's combat, in-game cinematics, storyline and a brief Q&amp;A with Ragnar himself. Plus, be sure to check out the screenshot and concept art galleries below for some gorgeous eye candy.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-2/">The Secret World</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-2/#4838618"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/tswscreen1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-2/#4838625"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/tswscreen10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-2/#4838627"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/tswscreen23_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-2/#4838630"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/tswscreen32_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-2/#4838631"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/tswscreen38_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-art/">The Secret World Art</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-art/#2822391"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/03/cdc-gdc2010-1269295574_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-art/#2822392"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/03/che-gdc2010-1269295574_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-art/#2822393"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/03/corporation-uniform-gdc2010-1269295575_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-art/#2822394"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/03/cowgirl-outfit-gdc2010-1269295575_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-art/#2822395"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/03/draugboss-gdc2010-1269295575_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/23/gdc10-a-first-glimpse-at-the-secret-world/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC10: A first glimpse at The Secret World</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/23/gdc10-a-first-glimpse-at-the-secret-world/">GDC10: A first glimpse at The Secret World</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 23 Mar 2010 10:00:00 EST. Day four of the Game Developer's Conference is in the books, and was one for the books as well. Massively managed to score a number of interviews, hands-on features, and we even got our mug in front of the cameras at one point during all the craziness. As you're aware by now, there is still much more to come from our trip to San Francisco, so take this opportunity to catch up on any stories you may have missed.<br />

We spent a little time at the <a href="http://www.austingdc.net/">Austin Game Developers Conference</a> this year and walked away with our heads full of game-related knowledge. Not least of this came from a panel held by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheri_Graner_Ray">Sheri Graner Ray</a>, the computer game industry's leading expert on the subject of gender and computer games.<br /><br />She began by dividing learning styles into types, and explaining how closely gender relates to the different styles. She then went on to discuss how important it is for game tutorials to include the different styles of learning at the risk of losing potential players. We've compiled a breakdown of Sheri's panel here, condensing her hour-long talk into what we think are her most salient points. Remember, most of these statements are not actual quotes unless specifically pulled out as such. "Damion Schubert, Lead Combat Designer, BioWare." Damion is a well known commentator on the MMO industry, a prolific writer and an entertaining blogger at the <a href="http://www.zenofdesign.com/">Zen of Design</a> site. Last year his '<a href="http://www.raphkoster.com/2007/09/06/agdc07-the-zen-of-online-game-design/">Casual vs. Hardcore</a>' talk was one of the highlights of the event. This year he's returned to discuss the challenges and design decisions that go into making the final challenges in a Massively Multiplayer game.<br /> <br /> Endgame gameplay, elder gameplay, is a mandatory and compelling part of the genre's equation. In fact, in Damion's opinion complex elder gameplay exemplifies what makes the massive genre what it is. Read on for notes from his engaging talk, with ... possibly ... some hints about what might be coming from the minds at BioWare.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/15/a/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>AGDC08: Exploring the Endgame</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/15/a/">AGDC08: Exploring the Endgame</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 15 Sep 2008 11:45:00 EST. There were <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PvP/">PvP</a> events, task force challenges, 'death races' and sundry other in-game activities. And huge, padded, Gladiator style superhero suits for real-life PvP. Seriously.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/28/massively-event-coverage-the-ncsoft-europe-heroic-weekend/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively Event Coverage: The NCsoft Europe Heroic Weekend</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/28/massively-event-coverage-the-ncsoft-europe-heroic-weekend/">Massively Event Coverage: The NCsoft Europe Heroic Weekend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 28 Mar 2008 09:00:00 EST.
