Some of us were chatting around the Massively (virtual) water cooler yesterday and came to the conclusion that one thing a lot of MMOs are missing is a reliable, up-to-date official wiki.<br />
<br />
With a few exceptions like the <a href="http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page">Guild Wars Wiki</a> or <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Main_Page">EVElopedia</a>, the majority of the MMO game list lacks a comprehensive official wiki -- a central hub for update news, gear and loot details, gameplay guides, and so on. Many games have but don't maintain them, and many more don't have them at all. Is this something that should be remedied, or is the lack of supply due to the lack of demand?<br />
<br />
What do you think -- should more developers put resources toward the creation, expansion, and maintenance of this sort of thing? <br />

CCP Fallout lets us know about the latest update to the <a href="https://gate.eveonline.com/"><em>EVE</em> Gate</a> beta client via a news post on the official <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> website. <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com/">CCP Games</a> has upgraded New Eden's premiere social networking tool to version 1.0.1, and it now boasts a lengthy list of bug fixes which are summarized in the <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=1334016">patch notes</a>.<br />
<br />
The fixes includes everything from adjustments to the skill queue display, to several refinements to the mail system, to various tweaks dealing with calendars, contacts, and saved login settings.<br />

<br />
Some time ago, Massively started up <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gamecolumns">a whole slew of new weekly columns</a>, each covering a specific MMO. Each week, they bring guides, editorials, interviews and community news in a similar way to what I've been doing with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/"><em>EVE Evolved</em></a> over the past <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/18/eve-evolved-two-year-anniversary/">two years</a>. Each of the new columns started with a definitive community guide showcasing handy links to useful websites, blogs and tools. This week it's my turn to give <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> the community guide treatment. This article will be updated periodically with new links as they make themselves known. If you have a useful <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> link you think would belong in the community guide, leave a comment with it.<br />
<br />
Skip past the cut for a breakdown of some of <em>EVE</em>'s most important community links.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/02/eve-evolved-a-community-guide-to-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: A community guide to EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/02/eve-evolved-a-community-guide-to-eve-online/">EVE Evolved: A community guide to EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 02 May 2010 18:00:00 EST. The basic idea behind the CSM is that as the horizons of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> and its subscriber numbers expand, there are many different playstyles to be found in the game. The CSM acts as the voice of the playerbase, advising <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> on how best to change or develop the game to suit player interests in a far more direct way than the requisite 'nerf this' or 'boost that' threads on the official forums. The Council of Stellar Management delegates aren't selected by CCP but are elected by the players themselves, which is the subject of the latest dev blog from CCP Xhagen (aka <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/petur-johannes-oskarsson">P&eacute;tur J&oacute;hannes &Oacute;skarsson</a>).<br /><br /><em>EVE Online</em>'s 3rd Council of Stellar Management <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=657">elections are underway</a>. CCP Xhagen's dev blog enumerates some of the CSM's main achievements to date, hopefully providing more incentive for players to vote. (Voter turnout has been lower than hoped, with only <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/28/eve-online-developers-speak-about-player-elected-councils/">8.6% of the playerbase getting involved</a>, as of the 2nd election.) Massively has covered <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/30/massively-speaks-with-eve-online-devs-about-council-of-stellar-m/">this idea of player governance</a> in the past through interviews with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/massively-interviews-eve-online-lead-economist-dr-eyjog/">CCP developers involved with this initiative</a>, but Xhagen's dev blog and its links to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/10/ccp-games-launches-evelopedia-beta/">EVElopedia</a> provides greater detail into how the CSM operates. <br /><br />The polls close on May 26th, so if you're an <em>EVE Online</em> player, remember to <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/council/voting/CandidatesView.asp?action=Vote">make your vote count</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/21/eves-3rd-council-of-stellar-management-elections-underway/">EVE's 3rd Council of Stellar Management elections underway</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 21 May 2009 20:00:00 EST. The game has a rich backstory behind it though; <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/"><em>EVE</em>'s setting of New Eden</a> continually gains more depth and new dimensions through <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/">bi-weekly Chronicles</a> written by <em>EVE</em> developer <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=lastposts&amp;cid=165905997">CCP Abraxas</a>. Since <em>EVE</em>'s players are ship-bound in actual gameplay (until <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/walking-in-stations">Walking in Stations</a></em> is released), the game's lore adds something that a number of pilots have gotten into, with player corporations and alliances siding with a given faction discussed in the backstory. A fair amount of the Chronicles focus on New Eden's four (playable) races and regimes -- and the <em>Empyrean Age</em> expansion <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/18/eve-evolved-has-faction-warfare-been-abandoned/">brought factional warfare into the game</a> -- but there are also a few notable criminal organizations presented in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a>'s lore. <br /><br />Perhaps the most disturbing among them is <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/The_Blood_Raiders_%28Chronicle%29">The Blood Raider Covenant</a>, a pirate NPC faction in the game that many <em>EVE</em> players know as their enemy through <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/quests">mission running</a>, exploration content, or simply 'ratting' in asteroid belts. <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Blood_Raider_Covenant">EVElopedia describes them</a> as <em>"a particularly gruesome sect of the generally reviled Sani Sabik cult. While all modern Sani Sabik rituals use blood in some manner or another, the Covenant places particular value on the blood of cloned humans, and is utterly ruthless in obtaining it, regularly boarding other spacecraft and abducting all aboard. That backstory is coupled with the many contributions of (volunteer) in-game journalists who report both on the actions and machinations of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a>'s players and alliances, and who also write news-style fiction that helps drive the game's storylines forward. <br /><br /><em>EVE Online</em>'s Lead Writer CCP t0nyG (aka <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tony-gonzales">Tony Gonzales</a>, author of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/13/the-empyrean-age-qanda-with-author-tony-gonzales/"><em>Empyrean Age</em></a>) has made some major announcements this week regarding changes to <em>EVE</em>'s storyline and lore, in a dev blog titled "<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=655">The Rediscovered Scrolls</a>". The dev blog focuses on how CCP plans to address some of the issues players have noted in terms of the backstory and how it relates to them as '<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/eggers/">capsuleers</a>' in the setting of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">New Eden</a>, given that official fiction and lore are now being released quite frequently. Gonzales says, <em>"Unfortunately, we haven't been perfect in the execution of this effort. A balance had to be maintained between keeping the storyline fresh and dynamic while also holding fast to the core attributes of foundation material. That led to mistakes, contradictions, and general inconsistencies in the canon. We took that personally, and decided to do something about it." </em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/09/ccp-games-to-revamp-the-lore-of-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CCP Games to revamp the lore of EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/09/ccp-games-to-revamp-the-lore-of-eve-online/">CCP Games to revamp the lore of EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 09 May 2009 12:00:00 EST. Given the complexity of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a>, and the fact that the collective knowledge of the players is a resource unto itself, the developers announced they would create a sort of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/20/the-wikipedia-of-eve-online/ ">Wikipedia for <em>EVE</em></a>.This player resource, dubbed the "EVElopedia", would also be available via <em>EVE Online</em>'s in-game web browser, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/10/eve-online-dev-blog-details-new-player-resource/ ">as confirmed in July</a>. Indeed, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> is putting more emphasis on making <em>EVE</em> into a game that's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/04/ccp-games-dev-oveur-on-how-eve-is-going-to-change/ ">better integrated with the web</a> and social networking in general. <em><br /><br /></em>What we didn't know, however, was when this would actually start to happen. At least, not until today. <em>EVE</em> developer "CCP VonSometime" <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=612">announced this afternoon</a> that a beta version of the <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Main_Page ">EVElopedia is live</a>, and already has over 6000 pages of content. The official <em>EVE</em> wiki is still in its infancy, but already it's looking to be a useful resource that <em>EVE</em> players didn't have before (beyond combing the forums.) Have a look at the <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Main_Page">EVElopedia</a> and see for yourself. Or, in the words of CCP VonSometime, <em>"Go forth, explore, and grow the EVE universe. Your community awaits it."</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/10/ccp-games-launches-evelopedia-beta/">CCP Games launches EVElopedia beta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 10 Dec 2008 19:30:00 EST. We also mentioned that a new volunteer <a href="http://www.myeve.eve-online.com/isd.asp ">Interstellar Services Department (ISD)</a> branch, known as YARR, would be responsible for setting up and maintaining the player-driven wiki, which bears the unwieldy moniker <em>"EVElopedia." </em><br /><br /><em>EVE Online</em> developer CCP Fear has <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=571">updated the community</a> on EVElopedia's status and the phases it went through on the way to becoming a useful resource. While EVElopedia isn't quite ready to be rolled out for general use, it's very near completion and will feature an updated item database. CCP Fear states that the database will automatically be updated with each new patch, ensuring that players have up-to-the-minute information at their fingertips upon logging in on patch days. Lastly, it's been confirmed that EVElopedia will be compatible with the in-game browser (IGB) for viewing text and images within the wiki. However, CCP Fear says that editing the wiki will need to be done in a browser out-of-game. Check out this latest dev blog for the full rundown on the EVElopedia project, which is <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=819470 ">already being discussed</a> on the <em>EVE Online</em> forums.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/10/eve-online-dev-blog-details-new-player-resource/">EVE Online dev blog details new player resource</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 10 Jul 2008 20:30:00 EST. The woefully outdated <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/itemdatabase/EN/">item database</a> will be revamped through this project, and numerous player resources will be added, essentially creating a <a href="http://www.wikipedia.org">Wikipedia</a> for the <em>EVE</em> universe.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/20/the-wikipedia-of-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Wikipedia of EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/20/the-wikipedia-of-eve-online/">The Wikipedia of EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 20 Apr 2008 20:00:00 EST.
