Let's hear it for information! Last week <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> developers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-johanson">Colin Johanson</a> <a href="http://www.twitch.tv/guildwars2/b/324689481">streamed a "TAD talk"</a> (that apparently stands for The ArenaNet Developers, but I prefer to think it's something along the lines of Truthy And Designerrific or The Answer Dump) about endgame in <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>. There was some pretty neat stuff.<br />
<br />
This, as a necessity, pretty much all relates to PvE. Sure, you could argue that PvP is endgame, as in it's something-to-when-you-are-level-80, but when you consider the way that PvP works in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>, it's actually something you do anytime you like. That might be all the time; that might be none of the time. So <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/05/flameseeker-chronicles-guild-wars-2-pvp-primer/">PvP</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/29/flameseeker-chronicles-wvw-primer/">WvW</a> will always be waiting there with open arms for you when you need to spice up your in-game life. They are constant. You don't fight your way up to level 80 and then think, "Gee, I'm competitive in PvP now!"<br />
<br />
That's part of ArenaNet's design philosophy. The team has a stated goal of not wanting to change the game drastically for endgame. If you're at the point in time that's marked "endgame," you've ostensibly enjoyed the game for the last 80 levels (otherwise, <em>why on earth would you not quit</em>?), so what ArenaNet <em>doesn't</em> want to do is suddenly give you something completely different to fill your days.<br />
<br />
That leaves some people feeling like there <em>is </em>no endgame because the endgame in <em>Guild Wars 2 </em>is strikingly similar to the rest of the game.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/07/17/flameseeker-chronicles-the-game-at-the-end-of-guild-wars-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Flameseeker Chronicles: The game at the end of Guild Wars 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/07/17/flameseeker-chronicles-the-game-at-the-end-of-guild-wars-2/">Flameseeker Chronicles: The game at the end of Guild Wars 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 14:00:00 EST. Have you always wanted to wield a unicorn bow and shoot trails of rainbows? (We know you have; <em>don't lie to us</em>.) If you have, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a> developers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-johanson">Colin Johanson</a> have confirmed today that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2 </em></a>is the game for you.<br />
<br />
The two devs took to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum"><em>Guild Wars 2</em>'s Twitch page</a> today to talk about late- and endgame content and progression for the game. To begin with, they talked about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/orr">Orr</a>, the erstwhile city of the gods, which has recently been turned into the abode of the dragon Zhaitan and his reanimated minions. Orr has no renown hearts, the quest-like activities that have been known to litter the lower-level areas, "because there are generally very few friendly NPCs in Orr." Instead, players' focus in Orr will be on huge events. There are roughly twice as many dynamic events in the Orrian areas as in other explorable zones; many of these are tied together as nets, rather than simple chains. Events tend to have farther-reaching effects than we've seen so far in lower-level areas, putting emphasis more on holistic zone control and cooperation than in the early game. Johanson suggested that players will need to recapture the fallen temples of the old gods and then keep control of those while also pushing deeper into the zone and fighting baddies at the frontlines.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/07/12/arenanet-devs-talk-legendary-weapons-endgame-and-more/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>ArenaNet devs talk legendary weapons, endgame, and more</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/07/12/arenanet-devs-talk-legendary-weapons-endgame-and-more/">ArenaNet devs talk legendary weapons, endgame, and more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 17:30:00 EST. <div>
	We know you <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> fans are over the moon about the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/28/guild-wars-2-announces-launch-date/">recently announced release date</a>, but the news doesn't stop there! <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a>, the game's lead designer, has just tackled some questions from <a href="http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/2012/06/28/guildwars2-junkies-interview-with-lead-designer-eric-flannum/"><em>Guild Wars 2 </em>Junkies</a>.<br />
	<br />
	The interview took a good hard look at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wvw">World vs World</a>. To begin with, Flannum addresses concerns about people not being able to play WvW on busy servers during peak hours, saying that there's a queue for the center WvW map that players can enter while playing PvE or any of the Borderlands home maps. Additionally, for a short while around the game's launch, players will be able to transfer servers at a reduced fee, which will hopefully aid in the even spread of players across servers and help people find the WvW server that suits their style. He states that the current looting system for WvW is under review, with the goal of keeping WvW looting similar to that in PvE. In response to concerns about the travel time around WvW maps, Flannum points out that captured keeps can be upgraded with waypoints for quicker travel. He also highlights WvW-specific armor, achievements, and titles as character advancement options for WvW players.<br />
	<br />
	A few other aspects of the game were covered as well. The question of allowing players to choose their starting weapons in character creation was brought up; Flannum says that's actually a part of the game at one point, but it was discarded once it was clear it gave newer players a disadvantage. He explains that some of the animation issues players complained about are due to bugs that will be fixed, while others are due to the fact that while transition animations are in place for switching directions, characters actually start moving immediately in the new direction as opposed to transitioning from one movement to another.<br />
	<br />
	For all the little details, be sure to catch the <a href="http://www.guildwars2junkies.com/2012/06/28/guildwars2-junkies-interview-with-lead-designer-eric-flannum/">full interview</a>, complete with a teasing non-answer about whether or not we'll see the Sylvari or Asura in the last beta weekend.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/28/eric-flannum-talks-guild-wars-2-mechanics/">Eric Flannum talks Guild Wars 2 mechanics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 15:00:00 EST. There's no doubt that the folks over at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a> have been busy with preparations for the upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> beta weekend event. The team has <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/were-ready-for-this-weekends-beta">doubled the number of servers</a> available for the beta and instituted a number of changes to the beta content itself, <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/the-big-beta-weekend-preview">as detailed in a recent blog post</a>. "Whenever we design a new feature we always ask ourselves how it impacts our players' ability to play with their friends," <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> stated about <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/">Guild Wars 2</a></em>. <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/05/08/guild-wars-2-wants-you-to-play-with-friends/">In an interview</a> focused on connecting players together, Flannum made it clear that the team was looking for every possible opportunity to pave the way for social hookups.<br />
<br />
Flannum addressed the specifics of how <em>Guild Wars 2's</em> servers work in relation to transfers. While there is a traditional paid transfer service (which can be used only every seven days), all players will have the ability to hop over to friends' servers as a guest. Player team-ups are further made possible by the dynamic level-adjusting system that scales players down to the zone they're occupying.<br />
<br />
This process is made easier by ArenaNet's decision to make friend lists and guilds account-wide instead of specific to a server. So while each guild has a home server, other chapters can exist elsewhere. Flannum also said that the team is carefully structuring its PvP system so that it will be free from potential abuse by server guesting.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/08/guild-wars-2-wants-you-to-play-with-your-friends-no-matter-what/">Guild Wars 2 wants you to play with your friends no matter what</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 May 2012 20:30:00 EST. Aztecs. Chronomancers. Mounts. Halberds. Golems. Dual wielding.<br />
<br />
These are all but a hint of what a fourth <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> campaign could have been, a campaign that was under development in the mid-2000s but was scrapped by 2007. Replacing it was the expansion <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eye-of-the-north/"><em>Eye of the North</em></a> and the workings of a super-secret sequel to the game (which you've probably never heard of). It was the forgotten campaign, swept under a rug while it was still under the rug.<br />
<br />
But what if, in some alternative timeline, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a> had gone ahead with this campaign? What if it became an established part of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> legacy, as familiar to us today as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/nightfall/"><em>Nightfall</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/factions/"><em>Factions</em></a>?<br />
<br />
What if <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/utopia/"><em>Guild Wars Utopia</em></a> had lived?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/08/the-game-archaeologist-looks-at-guild-wars-utopia/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist looks at Guild Wars Utopia</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/08/the-game-archaeologist-looks-at-guild-wars-utopia/">The Game Archaeologist looks at Guild Wars Utopia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 May 2012 12:00:00 EST. Sequels are tricky business. The more fans swarm around a game or franchise, the thicker the air gets with opinions regarding what the heart and soul of that game is all about. With that in mind, I don't envy sequel game designers the task of figuring out the balance of enough of a nod to the original to maintain the emotional connection that longstanding fans have without making newcomers feel locked out of something.<br />
<br />
One of the most frequent questions that pops up in the discussion of <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> anticipation is whether or not it's worth it for incoming players to take a spin through the original campaigns and expansion to pass the time. This is mostly tied in with discussion about the <a href="http://hom.guildwars2.com/en/faq/">Hall of Monuments</a> account rewards. In my opinion, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hall-of-monuments">HoM</a> rewards should be the least compelling reason to start a play-through, although it's still a good reason; even some members of our staff are haphazardly trying to find time to wade back through the stories before release. But considering everything in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a>'s design philosophy, we know the HoM rewards are unlikely to offer a statistical advantage, so they should be little more than a perk. Moreover, most of their value, it seems to me, should be from what they represent, which is both time spent in-game (forging that emotional connection) actually earning the reward points and the references some of them make to the original game. I still remember my first <a href="http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Stygian_Reaver">Stygian Reaver</a> in <em><a href="http://www.guildwars.com">GW</a></em>, and <em>that</em> is why I'm looking forward to wielding one in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/10/flameseeker-chronicles-line-of-succession/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Flameseeker Chronicles: Line of succession</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/10/flameseeker-chronicles-line-of-succession/">Flameseeker Chronicles: Line of succession</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 10 Apr 2012 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> has just released a new blog post to follow up its first <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> press beta weekend. Lead designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> says that the preview event went off <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/20/massivelys-guild-wars-2-closed-beta-impressions/">without a hitch</a>, and he also indicates that the dev team has a lot on its plate as it gears up to bring the game to a wider audience.<br />
<br />
He starts things off with a look at <em>Guild Wars 2's</em> unique "downed" mode, which is basically a pre-death state wherein you have a limited selection of abilities to rally and potentially save yourself. The blog goes on to detail changes to the game's compass, tweaks to its meta-events, and an extensive look at the updates to boons and conditions. Head to the official ArenaNet website for all the details.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/21/arenanet-blog-update-details-changes-to-guild-wars-2s-boons-and/">ArenaNet blog update details changes to Guild Wars 2's boons and conditions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 21 Feb 2012 11:00:00 EST. "I don't care for PvP, so <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> doesn't really interest me."<br />
<br />
This is something that I've heard with some regularity over the past year or two, and every time I sort of shake my head in confusion. How could anyone perceive <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars-2/">Guild Wars 2</a></em> as a PvP-only game? Really, just take a look at what we've seen from the development team and how PvE-centric it is and it seems that you'd get the impression that if anything, there's more of a PvE focus.<br />
<br />
Of course, I can see where this perception comes from -- <a href="http://www.guildwars.com/"><em>Guild Wars 1</em></a> holds the same perception for a lot of people, so it carries over. As a huge fan of both games and a pure PvE player, I thought it would be fun to take this week and clear things up. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-stumme">John Stumme</a> were kind enough to help, stepping in to answer a few questions about the balance of things both past and present. Curious about what they have to say? Well, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> certainly didn't let 2011 go out on a quiet note. The team had a few last tricks up its sleeve before closing down shop until the new year. We <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/19/massively-talks-mesmer-our-exclusive-interview-with-guild-wars/">chatted with Eric Flannum</a> about the <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> Mesmer, and the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/20/guild-wars-2-dev-blog-talks-achievements-thief-tweaks/">newest ArenaNet blog post</a> contained some exciting talk of combat, achievements, and some tweaking to the Thief class.<br />
<br />
I loved hearing about the updates to the Thief and to combat because the fact that the developers are talking about fine-tuning says good things to me about the development process. However, it was the talk of achievements that really caught my attention because it's such a sweeping, game-wide system. Follow along after the jump and let's take a closer look!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/26/flameseeker-chronicles-high-achievers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Flameseeker Chronicles: High achievers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/26/flameseeker-chronicles-high-achievers/">Flameseeker Chronicles: High achievers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 26 Dec 2011 18:00:00 EST. It's been a trying year for impatient <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> fans, but 2011 is closing on something of a high note due to recent beta rumblings as well as an increase in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arena-net">ArenaNet</a> information trickle. The latest blurb is a year-end development update courtesy of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jon-peters">Jon Peters</a>, and Flannum kicks things off with a fairly detailed look at the game's achievement system.<br />
<br />
As it turns out, <em>GW2's</em> achievements come in three flavors, and they comprise long-term goals, dailies, and monthly tasks that "encourage a variety of play and reward you with gold and experience."<br />
<br />
Peters details recent changes to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/guild-wars-2-thief">Thief class</a> gameplay, and he pays particular attention to the steal and backstab abilities. He also spends a bit of time talking about improvements to combat timing and animations. "Making these improvements has been really interesting and fun because it has shown us how our game can feel appropriately action-oriented without taking away the familiarity of the MMO genre," Peters explains.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/20/guild-wars-2-dev-blog-talks-achievements-thief-tweaks/">Guild Wars 2 dev blog talks achievements, Thief tweaks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 20 Dec 2011 21:00:00 EST. It's been days since we got the official <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars </em></a>2 <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/14/arenanet-unveils-the-guild-wars-2-mesmer/">Mesmer reveal</a>, but the excitement is still running strong through the fan community.<br />
<br />
Here at Massively, we're just as excited about it, so we took some time to sit down with game designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> and chat about some of the background and design details of the eighth and final <em>Guild Wars 2</em> class. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> has had an exciting week -- the developer is in attendance at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/g-star/">G-Star</a> in Korea to show off the demo of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>. As with any game in development, <em>GW2</em> is in a constant state of change as the team continues testing and improving. G-Star attendees were treated to the very latest build, and some of the ArenaNet developers put together some information about that build for those unable to attend the convention.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a>, joined by Character Artist Team Lead <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aaron-coberly">Aaron Coberly</a> and UI Artist <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/vicki-ebberts">Vicki Ebberts</a>, ran down the changes in the newest ArenaNet blog entry. Character customization and creation got some improvements, and Aaron provides a detailed video to show them off. Vicki talked over the new "big beefy UI" as a response to feedback the team has received, and Eric wrapped up with some exciting details about changes to skill acquisition. Weapon skills will continue to be unlocked by using the weapon, but healing, utility, and elite skills will now be unlocked with skill points. "Skill points can be acquired by undertaking what we call a skill challenge. There are 200 skill challenges in the game, and they range from defeating tough opponents, to answering riddles, to drinking a particularly potent drink."<br />
<br />
There are many more details -- and the promise of more to come tomorrow -- at the ArenaNet blog, so head there for the full blog entry!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/10/new-guild-wars-2-demo-build-brings-changes-to-ui-character-crea/">New Guild Wars 2 demo build brings changes to UI, character creation, and more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 10 Nov 2011 10:30:00 EST. With <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars-2/">Guild Wars 2</a></em> appearing this weekend at the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GStar/">G-Star</a> convention, there's been a lot of speculation about two potential pieces of news -- a date for the beta or the eighth profession reveal. Unfortunately for the speculators, the latest updates from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Eric-Flannum/">Eric Flannum</a> have <a href="http://www.guildwars2guru.com/guild-wars-2-news/guild-wars-2-gstar/">put those rumors to rest</a>. Flannum confirms that while there will be news coming out on the 11th, it will not include either of those updates, which are still on track for a later date.<br />
<br />
That being said, there's still some news to be found, including the preview of some high-level armor sets that are exclusive for the Korean demo. Flannum stated that there will be other elements unique to this demo, although he declined to elaborate beyond the armor. <em>Guild Wars 2</em> fans will have to keep their eyes peeled for what comes out of the convention... and wait just a wee bit longer to find out when the beta will begin, or what the last profession will be.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/guild-wars-2-is-at-g-star-with-new-items-but-no-beta/">Guild Wars 2 is at G-Star with new items but no beta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 Nov 2011 19:00:00 EST. One of the more interesting reveals to come out of the post-<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-prime-2011">PAX</a> news glut is a blurb about player-created PvP servers in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Yeah, we did a double-take as well, and the post over on MMORPG.com is pretty light on the actual details while promising more info later in the week. Apparently, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-johanson">Colin Johanson</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> let slip that <em>GW2</em> will allow players to "create and host their own servers or games with specific rule-sets as well."<br />
<br />
The thread title mentions PvP servers, but the "specific rule-sets" bit above seems to indicate that the mechanic could cater to roleplayers, PvEers, or any number of other specialized groups who desire a customizable play experience apart from the meddling masses. Is <em>Guild Wars 2</em> following the trail that <em>Neverwinter Nights</em> blazed a decade ago? Is it all a misunderstanding? It looks like we'll find out later this week.<br />
<br />
<strong>[Update: ANet has clarified this topic by <a href="http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/showpost.php?p=897221&amp;postcount=32">posting</a> the following: "In the interview {Eric} mentioned that we are considering allowing players to 'create' their own PvP servers, it is not for certain. <em>"Think of the personal story in </em><a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/">Guild Wars 2</a><em> as you would the 'main' storyline of a great single player RPG," </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum/">Eric Flannum</a> said <a href="http://www.gamerzines.com/mmo/previews/interview-guild-wars-2-pt1.html">in an interview with GamerZine</a>. Instead of rote MMO quests, this storyline will be full of significant, one-time choices that will have a huge impact on your character.<br />
<br />
This is just one of the many promises that ArenaNet has made in regard to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> as the studio strives to differentiate it from the rest of the fantasy pack. The interview covers the main features list of the game: the event system, the personal storyline, and the emphasis on exploration.<br />
<br />
When pressed about in-game events and holidays, Flannum said that many <a href="http://www.guildwars.com/"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> holidays will be returning: <em>"We haven't planned out exactly what we're doing yet, but we certainly plan to support all of our usual holiday events in </em>Guild Wars 2<em>. Since our event system is very robust I imagine we'll be able to do a lot more things than we were able to do in the first game."</em><br />
<br />
He also said that the team is striving to "push the fun and collectability" of the mini-pets system over <em>Guild Wars 2's</em> predecessor. <a href="http://www.gamerzines.com/mmo/previews/interview-guild-wars-2-pt1.html">You can read the full interview at GamerZine</a>.<br />

Unless you've been spelunking near the center of the earth for the past few days, you're likely aware that <a href="http://www.arena.net/">ArenaNet</a> recently unveiled <em><a href="http://guildwars2.com">Guild Wars 2's</a></em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/19/guild-wars-2s-explosive-seventh-class-the-engineer/">seventh class</a>. Chances are high that you're also aware of said class's affinity for turrets, guns, and various contraptions meant to rain death down upon any unfortunate enemies that cross its path.<br />
<br />
Today, Massively presents a new interview with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> lead designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a>. Naturally, the guest of honor at this Tyrian banquet of exclusivity is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/23/flameseeker-chronicles-analyzing-the-engineer/">the Engineer</a>, and Flannum (along with several other <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arena.net">ANet</a> dignitaries) provides us with a few tasty mechanical appetizers before getting down to the lore-centric main course.<br />
<br />
Bon appetit after the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/25/massively-exclusive-eric-flannum-on-gw2s-engineer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively Exclusive: Eric Flannum on GW2's Engineer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/25/massively-exclusive-eric-flannum-on-gw2s-engineer/">Massively Exclusive: Eric Flannum on GW2's Engineer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 25 May 2011 16:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> is a game that seemingly everyone is anticipating, helped along by the fact that very few people have gotten to play it and even fewer have played it extensively. So it's understandable that <a href="http://guildwars.incgamers.com/blog/comments/guild-wars-2-interview-part-1">incGamers' recent interview with Eric Flannum and John Peters</a> covers a lot of ground, ranging from dungeons to PvP to environmental interactions. While some of the questions posed by the interviewers aren't answered, there's a great deal of information for fans, starting with the clarification that dungeons do not have a specific "story mode." There's a series of events the player experiences with important world NPCs followed by the option to explore the dungeon.<br />
<br />
PvP is discussed a bit, with the free admission that while players in competitive arenas will be evenly matched, it's possible to be simply outgunned in open combat. The role of guards and other NPCs in the open combats is also clarified; NPCs act essentially as speedbumps rather than serious targets for player consideration. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars-2/">Guild Wars 2</a></em> fans should <a href="http://guildwars.incgamers.com/blog/comments/guild-wars-2-interview-part-1">read through both pages of the interview</a> to get a better idea of what's coming in the game as well as another confirmation that a closed beta is due before the end of the year.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/16/world-pvp-dungeon-experiences-and-quality-of-life-in-guild-war/">World PvP, dungeon experiences, and quality of life in Guild Wars 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 16 May 2011 19:00:00 EST. Although <a href="http://guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> has had <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/">many reveals lately</a>, much of the game is still shrouded in mystery, and <a href="http://arena.net">ArenaNet</a> has generally remained tight-lipped about specific game information. However, in a <a href="http://www.guild-hall.cz/index.php/guild-wars-2-interview/252-gh-cz-interview-od-zailyho?start=3">recent interview with Guild-Hall.cz</a>, Lead Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum/">Eric Flannum</a> did let fans in on a few tidbits.<br />
<br />
A concern for a lot of players is skill vs. level. Flannum revealed that skill will play a significant role in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> and clarified it by saying, "<em>For really large level spreads of say 10 or more levels, then the gear and raw power of the character is going to be a huge factor. When you are talking about smaller level differences then skill plays a very large role.</em>" Given the more action-based combat mechanics of the game, we think this makes a lot of sense.<br />
<br />
In a related question, Flannum was asked about the quality of dropped gear vs. crafted gear. "<em>It will be possible to craft items that are comparable in power to the best items available through drops and other rewards</em>," he assured readers.<br />

The class and race information for <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> might be coming fast and furious, but general gameplay details have been scarce lately.<br />
<br />
That all changed today, thanks to an <a href="http://gw2.variance.hu/2011/05/04/variance-guild-wars-2-arenanet-interview/">interview</a> with <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> fansite Variance. The Variance team sat down to chat with <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a>, <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-corpening">John Corpening</a>, <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/egan-hirvela">Egan Hirvela</a>, and <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/matt-witter">Matt Witter</a> for plenty of new tidbits on the game, including the new details that fans have been hoping for.<br />
<br />
Perhaps some of the most exciting information was regarding PvP play. Information on this side of the game has been very limited, but we learned several new things today. There will be four World vs. World maps at launch, each player will begin in his or her own home map, and there are numerous strategic objectives within PvP play. Hardcore fans will enjoy the in-depth analysis of the new PvP information, <a href="http://www.killtenrats.com/2011/05/04/gw2-wvw-there-are-four-maps/">courtesy of Kill Ten Rats</a>.<br />
<br />
The team wasn't finished there, though. Fans have also been very curious about other details such as server setup, titles carried over from <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars 1</em></a>, and vanity items like miniatures. The team had things to say about all of that, so head over to Variance to <a href="http://gw2.variance.hu/2011/05/04/variance-guild-wars-2-arenanet-interview/">see the full interview for yourself</a>!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/04/guild-wars-2-developers-offer-new-information-on-pvp-servers-t/">Guild Wars 2 developers offer new information on PvP, servers, titles, and more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 04 May 2011 19:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> is moving back from gameplay details to lore information with its <a href="http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Tekks">newest blog post</a>, all about the story behind the Hylek race. These frog people are familiar to current <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> players but not in much depth beyond "Why won't they stop hopping around and let me hit them?!"<br />
<br />
The Hylek are a returning race in <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>, so <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> has taken some time to delve into their story -- who they are, how the various tribes differ, where they live, and much more. The lore overview is interspersed with various quotes from Hylek leaders and even an Asura researcher who mentions the death of a colleague (<a href="http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Tekks">no relation</a>) from a poisoned Hylek spear wound.<br />
<br />
The Hylek aren't a race to be taken lightly, but some of the tribes are friendlier than others, so take the time to get to know them. For the time being, check out <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/go-forth-and-multiply-the-hylek">Go Forth and Multiply</a> on the ArenaNet blog!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/23/arenanet-delves-into-the-lore-of-the-guild-wars-2-hylek-race/">ArenaNet delves into the lore of the Guild Wars 2 Hylek race</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 Mar 2011 15:00:00 EST. In what might well be the highlight of Norn week, <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a> has released a wealth of information to <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> fans this morning. A new video, screenshots and art, and an interview with the developers combine to tell players all about what they can expect if they choose to play a Norn character.<br />
<br />
Where and how will you live? What are your surroundings like? <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeff-grubb">Jeff Grubb</a>, <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/ree-soesbee">Ree Soesbee</a>, <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a>, and <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/bobby-stein">Bobby Stein</a> gathered to deliver some insight on the Norn and gave us some exciting new details in the bargain. For example, the Norn trait of being in sympathy with nature isn't limited to the animal forms we're familiar with so far. For example, Eric Flannum explained that Norn players can use that affinity to call upon the wurm spirit and summon a temporary wurm pet to assist in battle. While we're not sure you'd <a href="http://wiki.guildwars.com/images/7/7d/Frost_Wurm.jpg">want one sticking around</a> and following you home, they make for handy companions to call on in a pinch.<br />
<br />
The new video, set to <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeremy-soule">Jeremy Soule's</a> instantly recognizable background score, offers sweeping views of some of the Norn home areas. The video, which is a combination of familiar and new footage, deserves at least two viewings to allow you to take it all in -- thanks both to the sheer size of it all and the intricate detail. From the shields mounted high above to the weapons on the fences below, there's more to see than can be parsed in one viewing.<br />
<br />
The screenshots are a combination of new and old too, but even the familiar ones have new bits of information here and there. The Norn female we saw way back when is now clearly identified as a Ranger in the image title, for example.<br />
<br />
Follow along after the jump for the video, a gallery of the new images, and the developer interview!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/24/guild-wars-2-norn-week-continues-with-new-video-and-developer-in/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Guild Wars 2 Norn week continues with new video and developer interview</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/24/guild-wars-2-norn-week-continues-with-new-video-and-developer-in/">Guild Wars 2 Norn week continues with new video and developer interview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 09:00:00 EST. Are the Mesmer and Assassin returning to <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> or not? Speculation on these two professions has been ongoing and enthusiastic among <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> fans, and designers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jon-peters">Jon Peters</a> added a hefty dose of fuel to the fire in their <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-02-23-mesmer-and-assassin-in-guild-wars-2">interview with Eurogamer today</a>.<br />
<br />
The two didn't offer a definitive answer on these two classes but hinted that the Mesmer profession might not be returning exactly as we know it. Jon Peters commented that "<em>people who enjoy that playstyle will be happy,</em>" but didn't offer further clarification. Eric Flannum did confirm that we have one more light armor class and two more medium armor classes -- what those are remain to be seen, hopefully very soon.<br />

The <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> fanbase is still buzzing about the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/tyria-evolved-introducing-the-guild-wars-2-guardian/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em> Guardian</a> this week, and we here at Massively are just as interested -- if not more so -- as anyone else. There's been a lot of talk of skills, armor, and so on, but we were curious about something a little different: the backstory behind this new class, both in a lore context and a creation context.<br />
<br />

"<em>I don't think I've seen a studio more passionate about its work.</em>" <br />
<br />
Massively contributing editor <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/larry-everett">Larry Everett</a> made this comment regarding <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> in our recent <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/05/massively-staff-picks-for-2010-and-the-decade/">Staff Choice Awards</a>, and his timing couldn't have been better. ArenaNet has begun 2011 in a big way with the ArenaNet retrospective. The 15-minute video is a trip back in time to the earliest days of ArenaNet and <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>, but it doesn't stop there. Over 20 ArenaNet team members give their perspectives on where the company has been, where it's going, the company's take on <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>, and what makes it great. <br />
<br />
If you loved the Manifesto video, you're likely going to find this one an even bigger treat. <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> fans have been enjoying a series of articles at <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/">PC Gamer</a> this week, but unfortunately the series came with a bit of misinformation. If you read through the articles, you may have noticed some news regarding dungeons as downloadable content in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>.<br />
<br />
The community was buzzing about that possibility until Community Manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/regina-buenaobra'">Regina Buenaobra</a> <a href="http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/showpost.php?p=418849&amp;postcount=189">stepped in to clarify things</a>: "<em>We have not made a decision on whether to sell dungeon content as DLC, contrary to what the article states. The author of the article jumped to this (incorrect) conclusion based upon his interpretation of Eric's statements.</em>"<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> released a clarification that stated in part ".<em>..our core philosophy--of not requiring you to spend additional money to play the game and not making the game difficult or painful to play in order to encourage you to buy things from the store--still stands.</em>" Eric's full statement can be seen <a href="http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/showpost.php?p=418849&amp;postcount=189">within Regina's forum post</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/21/arenanet-community-manager-debunks-guild-wars-2-rumor/">ArenaNet community manager debunks Guild Wars 2 rumor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 21 Oct 2010 17:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/01/arenanet-designer-gives-new-details-on-armor-and-loot-in-guild-w/">Last week's <em>Guild Wars 2</em> news</a> got a huge community reaction. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/04/flameseeker-chronicles-of-dungeons-stats-and-transmutation/">loudest discussions</a> came from the announcement regarding Transmutation Stones and their relation to the upcoming game's item shop.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-hargrove">John Hargrove</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> answered some of the most prevalent fan questions last night in the <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/john-and-eric-answer-your-items-and-loot-questions">newest ArenaNet blog post</a>. Predictably, most of the questions centered around Transmutation Stones, but we also learn a bit more about crafting, gathering, and armor stats. While some questions remain unanswered for the time being, there are plenty of new details to pore over. Follow along after the jump as we take a look at them.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/07/guild-wars-2-designers-answer-player-questions-about-armor-craf/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Guild Wars 2 designers answer player questions about armor, crafting, and Transmutation Stones</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/07/guild-wars-2-designers-answer-player-questions-about-armor-craf/">Guild Wars 2 designers answer player questions about armor, crafting, and Transmutation Stones</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 07 Oct 2010 11:30:00 EST. At the top of my to-do list for Saturday morning at PAX was Designing Dynamic Events, a <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> panel with designers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-johanson">Colin Johanson</a>. Talk and video of the panel have been everywhere this week, and I wanted to take a little bit of time to give my thoughts on what they did and how it was received.<br />
<br />
The panel was billed as a discussion about "<em>how </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2">Guild Wars 2</a><em> designers create events in the dynamic, living game world and the many factors to consider when designing any kind of MMO content.</em>"<br />
<br />
It sounded interesting, but it was a ticketed event with limited attendance, which seemed strange to me. I managed to get a ticket and was even more confused when I walked into the relatively tiny room. Why such a small place for something that would certainly have drawn a huge crowd?<br />
<br />
It all became clear very soon, so follow along after the cut to hear more about my take on the new things we learned in Designing Dynamic Events.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/09/quaggan-sad-a-look-back-at-the-guild-wars-2-dynamic-events-pane/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Quaggan sad: A look back at the Guild Wars 2 Dynamic Events panel</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/09/quaggan-sad-a-look-back-at-the-guild-wars-2-dynamic-events-pane/">Quaggan sad: A look back at the Guild Wars 2 Dynamic Events panel</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 09 Sep 2010 13:00:00 EST. As <a href="http://www.gamescom.de/en/gamescom/home/index.php">gamescom</a> and <a href="http://www.paxsite.com/paxprime/index.php">PAX</a> approach, a fair amount of attention is on <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a> -- specifically <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>. The prospect of being able to play <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>GW2</em></a> for the first time is an exciting one for fans. <br />
<br />
ArenaNet has released a few details of what we'll see during gameplay over the past week, including the information that we'll be playing with some staff back at the ArenaNet offices. In the most recent blog post, we hear directly from four of those staffers. Bob Green, Joe Belousek, Anthony Ordon, and Joe Longworth are members of the <em>Guild Wars 2</em> QA team, the group working to make sure the demo runs smoothly. Check out the <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/the-road-to-gamescom-assuring-quality">latest ArenaNet blog entry</a> to see what they're most looking forward to in the demo.<br />
<br />
While the demo is easily the main focus of ArenaNet's presence at these events, there is more to check out while you're there. The <a href="http://www.paxsite.com/paxprime/schedule.php">event schedule for PAX Prime</a> was finally released yesterday, and it includes a Saturday morning presentation entitled "Guild Wars 2<em>: Designing Dynamic Events</em>." <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-johanson">Colin Johanson</a> will give insight into how the dynamic event system in <em>GW2</em> was created -- it's a talk that fans won't want to miss.<br />

In the <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/eric-flannum-fields-your-ranger-questions">newest entry</a> on the ArenaNet blog, Lead Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> answers the most frequently asked questions from the community.<br />
<br />
He clarified quite a few things from the reveal video and discussed some mechanics that will carry over from <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>, such as the ability to dodge.<br />
<br />
Some new information on the blind condition caught the attention of quite a few fans. Rather than the <a href="http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Blind">timed duration</a> we're familiar with now, blindness in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> <em>"causes the target's next attack to miss." </em> <br />
<br />
Interestingly, a question very near the top of the frequently-asked list was not answered: that of interrupts. There's heavy community speculation on why this is, and hopefully we'll have some news that clears it up very soon. For now, the latest round of new information can be found <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/eric-flannum-fields-your-ranger-questions">at the ArenaNet blog</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/22/eric-flannum-answers-more-questions-about-guild-wars-2s-ranger/">Eric Flannum answers more questions about Guild Wars 2's ranger</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 22 Jul 2010 12:30:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/09/arenanet-reveals-traits-and-warrior-class-for-guild-wars-2/">Last week's unveiling</a> of the warrior class for <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> sparked a lot of excitement in the <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> community. The introduction of the trait system came at the same time and was another hot topic of conversation. <br />
<br />
We at Massively were as thrilled as the rest of the community at the news, and just like everyone else, we had quite a few questions. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> Lead Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/10/warriors-traits-and-combat-chatter-massivelys-interview-with/">answered our questions</a> last week, but he's got even more to say.<br />
<br />
Eric and Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ben-miller">Ben Miller</a> spent some time going through quite a few of the more commonly asked questions, and added an <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/eric-and-ben-answer-your-questions-about-warrior-and-traits#more-2357">informative new entry to the ArenaNet blog</a>. Yesterday's update to the <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> site brought <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/09/arenanet-reveals-traits-and-warrior-class-for-guild-wars-2/">news that made a lot of fans very happy</a>: confirmation of the warrior class as well as the introduction of the traits system for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>. As always, once <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a> decides to give out information, they do it right. We got screenshots, wallpapers, video, and pages of detailed information on this new class and concept.<br />
<br />
We at Massively -- just like the rest of the <em>Guild Wars 2</em> community -- were thrilled at the news and had plenty of questions about the new information. Lead Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> generously spent some time answering those questions (and evading our sneaky attempts to wrangle a third class reveal.)<br />
<br />
He had some very interesting things to say, so follow along after the jump for our exclusive interview!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/10/warriors-traits-and-combat-chatter-massivelys-interview-with/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Warriors, traits, and combat chatter: Massively's interview with the Guild Wars 2 Lead Designer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/10/warriors-traits-and-combat-chatter-massivelys-interview-with/">Warriors, traits, and combat chatter: Massively's interview with the Guild Wars 2 Lead Designer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 10 Jun 2010 13:30:00 EST. There has been so much new information about <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> lately that it can be a little hard to keep up. While things have mostly focused around dynamic events and personal story, the scope of those two concepts is so large that every new piece of news seemed to trigger another list of questions. <br />
<br />
We at Massively have been following the developments closely, so we are as curious as anyone else. We asked the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> team about several various points -- everything from crafting to the creation timeline.<br />
<br />
Lead Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a>, Lore and Continuity Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ree-soesbee">Ree Soesbee</a>, and Game Designer <a href="http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/John_Hargrove">John Hargrove</a> were kind enough to satisfy our curiosity on some of these points. Follow along after the jump and see what they had to say.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/28/massivelys-interview-with-the-guild-wars-2-design-team/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's interview with the Guild Wars 2 design team</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/28/massivelys-interview-with-the-guild-wars-2-design-team/">Massively's interview with the Guild Wars 2 design team</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 28 May 2010 11:30:00 EST. </em></div>
<em>"Loot will never be directly given as a reward for an event. [...] All events reward you with experience, gold, and karma, which you can spend at merchants and vendors in the game to purchase rewards.</em>"<br />
<br />
There you have it: the answer to the question asked over and over since the <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> dynamic event system was announced <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/12/guild-wars-2-lead-designer-reveals-new-information-about-questin/">a little over a week ago</a>. <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> players have always enjoyed loot distribution that's different from the need vs. greed or free loot systems that are standard in so many MMOs. Pre-assigned items and equally divided gold skirted the entire issue of arguing over who gets what.<br />
<br />
Players have been very concerned about the distribution of loot, gold, and XP in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>, but the only hint we received was from Lead Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a>: <em>"[...] each event has its own criteria for determining participation that gauges who actually made a decent effort at participating. It's designed to give no credit or lower credit to players who were AFK during an event or just did a fly-by, using only a few skills and moved on. [...] The intention of the system is to encourage players to participate in fights. We don't define participation as either idling and doing nothing, or using one skill and simply tagging a monster."</em><br />
<br />
That was definitely reassuring, but as with most of the <em>Guild Wars 2</em> news it raises even more questions. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-johanson">Colin Johanson</a> addressed them briefly <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/19/guild-wars-2-lead-content-designer-expands-on-dynamic-events-sys/">yesterday</a> when he introduced the concept of karma as a way of acquiring the things you need, promising that Eric Flannum would explain further tomorrow. <br />
<br />

The folks over at <a href="http://www.guildwars2guru.com">GuildWars2Guru.com</a> have scored an impressive interview with <a href="http://www.arena.net/">ArenaNet</a> Lead Developer Eric Flannum and Game Designers Ryan Scott and Isaiah Cartwright. The trio drop a few interesting nuggets about the highly anticipated <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>. The piece touches on everything from World Versus World (WvW) PvP, to the game's unique take on healing classes, to crafting and gathering.<br />
<br />
"<em>We're still designing many of the specifics but players should expect crafting to enhance their adventuring experience and not be a system that tries to replace it. What I mean when I say that is that crafting will not be something players can engage in as a career without ever going out and slaying monsters and being a hero. We think that systems that allow players to do that can be a lot of fun but just aren't right for what we're doing in </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2">GW2</a>," said Flannum.<br />

Last week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2">information avalanche</a> from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> answered a pile of questions about <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>, then created what was possibly an even bigger pile of questions with a lot of speculation thrown in to boot.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a>'s been on the ball, keeping a close eye on the buzz and compiling a list of the most asked questions. Today, those questions were answered, thanks to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> Lead Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a>. Possibly the most significant piece of news was the confirmation that the companion system is in fact dead. As development progressed and the focus on group play and casual grouping became clearer, the team decided that the system wasn't necessary.<br />
<br />
The companion system was only the beginning -- Flannum <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/nine-gw2-follow-up-questions-with-eric-flannum">covered nine key points in this blog entry</a>, ranging from the skill bar to non-combat activities. As with all of the latest <em>Guild Wars 2</em> news, anyone with an interest in the game will find it well worth their time to read through this latest blog entry.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/05/eric-flannum-answers-more-guild-wars-2-questions/">Eric Flannum answers more Guild Wars 2 questions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 05 May 2010 21:00:00 EST. Last week was pretty huge for the <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> community. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> released a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2">flurry of new information</a>: the first profession was confirmed as the Elementalist, followed by the unveiling of details on combat and profession mechanics.<br />
<br />
Two items in particular raised quite a bit of discussion in the community: the lack of secondary professions in <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>, and the design of the skill bar. As <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> fans, we've grown accustomed to the extreme freedom that we currently have. Want to play E/Rt and run a full Rit bar? Great, no problem! It looks like we're not going to be able to do that in <a href="http://www.massivley.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>, for several reasons, and the immediate reaction was that of concern. <br />
<br />
However, it's a trade-off. Will we gain in the end? That remains to be seen, as we can only speculate with the limited knowledge we have at the moment, but follow along after the jump to see what the possibilities are.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/03/flameseeker-chronicles-will-combat-in-guild-wars-2-be-an-improv/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Flameseeker Chronicles: Will combat in Guild Wars 2 be an improvement?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/03/flameseeker-chronicles-will-combat-in-guild-wars-2-be-an-improv/">Flameseeker Chronicles: Will combat in Guild Wars 2 be an improvement?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 03 May 2010 15:00:00 EST. The floodgates of <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> news continue to open, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> has revealed the first confirmed class for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>: the Elementalist. Not only do we get confirmation of the Ele class, but we get an exciting amount of detail and another huge update on overall combat.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> Elementalists are formidable foes as it stands now, but it looks like the class will advance quite a bit in <em>GW2</em>. In 250 years, the Ele will have learned to change elements on the fly as well as summon items as weapons. That's only the beginning, though. The <em>Guild Wars 2</em> site contains some <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/elementalist/">stunning screenshots to go with all the information</a> as well as videos, the first of which we have also embedded after the jump for your viewing pleasure.<br />
<br />
What about combat in general? Lead Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> gave us an <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/combat/part-one/">outline of combat</a> that reveals some extremely exciting details about what's to come. Ten slot skill bar? Yes please. Increased importance placed upon tactical strategy and movement? Any <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> fan worth his or her salt should read through this several times -- there is a significant amount of new information.<br />
<br />
Personally, as a huge fan of the Elementalist class, I found this to be the most exciting <em>GW2</em> news in quite a while. There is certainly more to come from here on out, so keep your eyes on Massively for all the latest -- we'll be keeping a close eye out for it!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/28/down-you-go-arenanet-unveils-the-guild-wars-2-elementalist-and/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Down you go: ArenaNet unveils the Guild Wars 2 Elementalist and combat details</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/28/down-you-go-arenanet-unveils-the-guild-wars-2-elementalist-and/">Down you go: ArenaNet unveils the Guild Wars 2 Elementalist and combat details</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 28 Apr 2010 13:45:00 EST.
