Lately, there have been a number of topics all vying for my attention here in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook">Tattered Notebook</a>. In a couple of instances, some of them got a little rough and started pushing the others around to try for a better place in line. Yet all the while, <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> Moonlight Enchantments has been patiently waiting. So as a reward (we do like to reward good behavior here!), that quiet little topic is getting the spotlight in a special bonus edition. And the timing couldn't be more perfect!<br />
<br />
You see, initially this guide was just going to focus on speed to help you get through that short two-day event that comes but once a month on the 20th and 21st in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a>. Now, however, we get to delve into the changes and new things coming to the Enchanted Grottoes, from even more housing items (yes, that's on top of the new additions in March) to two new repeatable quests to earn the tokens to buy the items. And with this month's festival right around the corner, having a game plan ready to get the most out of those two days will benefit new and old players alike.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/tattered-notebook-a-guide-to-eqiis-moonlight-enchantments-an/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tattered Notebook: A guide to EQII's Moonlight Enchantments (with new stuff!)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/tattered-notebook-a-guide-to-eqiis-moonlight-enchantments-an/">Tattered Notebook: A guide to EQII's Moonlight Enchantments (with new stuff!)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 18 May 2013 20:00:00 EST. Last year, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> threw a new ingredient into its convention mix -- player panels. The result was such a hit that the studio is not only bringing them back this year, but extending their availability; Sunday has been added to the player panels schedule, and that means there are plenty of openings!<br />
<br />
Do you have a subject involving any SOE game that you think would be of interest and benefit others? Maybe you are a whiz at livesteaming or you have primo tips and tricks on cosplay to dispense. What about sharing your fan site or holding a raid clinic? Whatever your idea, <a href="https://www.soe.com/soelive/news-article.vm?id=006">submit your proposal</a> by 3:00 a.m EDT June 1st for consideration. If selected, you and up to three other panel members will receive All Access passes to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE-Live-2013/">SOE Live 2013</a> (no other expenses are covered, including food, travel, or add-ons). Panel selection -- which is not on a first-come, first-served basis -- will be completed mid-June.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/13/player-panel-submissions-open-for-soe-live-2013/">Player panel submissions open for SOE Live 2013</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 13 May 2013 11:30:00 EST. Reader Andrew is quite impressed with the look of <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com/"><em>Neverwinter</em></a>, saying that it is visually "amazing!" Without descending into hyperbole, I have to agree. It's a good-looking title with plenty of interesting details if you take the time to stop and smell the corpses.<br />
<br />
Corpses? Well, Andrew is standing in the middle of a whole bunch of dead folks here with his spectral flashlight (AA batteries not included). I wouldn't touch that treasure chest if I were you, Andrew. I'm guessing it might be a mimic. Oh no!<br />
<br />
As we stumble through the dark, what other visions might we encounter in this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/One-Shots/">One Shots</a>?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/12/one-shots-a-light-in-the-dark/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>One Shots: A light in the dark</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/12/one-shots-a-light-in-the-dark/">One Shots: A light in the dark</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 12 May 2013 10:00:00 EST. It's like they know me! You'd think with all the bag functionalities that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> has introduced to <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> this year that the devs have watched my livestreams and taken pity on me and my storage predicament. And it didn't stop with just one new addition; even after one set of sorting capabilities was released, another set came along. With all these new organizational tools, there is a chance even I might actually find something in my oft-overstuffed bags. (Clean bags, however, is another matter entirely and not likely to be resolved!)<br />
<br />
Now bag sorting in and of itself really doesn't sound like a big deal, the kind complete with flashing lights and a ticker-tape parade. It's not. In fact, it's pretty much a little thing... well, except for micro-managers and packrats, of course. So why in heavens would I be spending time talking about piddly updates in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/">EQII</a></em> when such <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/30/eqiis-scars-of-the-awakened-highlights-the-story-through-art/">an expansive one</a> recently released? Because getting the little things (and getting them with regularity) <em>is</em> big. The subject of minor updates warrants just as much attention as a named one like <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/scars-of-the-awakened/">Scars of the Awakened</a></em>, both for what the updates are and for what they portend. And those updates bode well for everyone.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/11/tattered-notebook-its-the-little-things-that-count-in-eqii-up/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tattered Notebook: It's the little things that count in EQII updates</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/11/tattered-notebook-its-the-little-things-that-count-in-eqii-up/">Tattered Notebook: It's the little things that count in EQII updates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 11 May 2013 14:00:00 EST. I have to admit, I read the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/29/virtual-world-economist-says-guild-wars-2s-pre-endgame-economy/">recent article by Ramin Shokrizade</a> on the pre-endgame economy of <a href="http://guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> and shrugged. He made a lot of great points, but the problems with <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2">GW2's</a></em> economy are really not that unique. One of the biggest dilemmas is the fact that dropped items, like weapons and armor, really don't have any value prior to the endgame. As in many MMOs, the broker or auction house is flooded with pre-endgame armor and weapons and there's just no demand for it.<br />

There are several design flaws that play a role in why dropped items, and virtual economies in general, feel stagnant. Let's look at a few common problems in MMOs today and see why broken economies actually hurt guilds as well.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/02/the-guild-counsel-why-broken-economies-hurt-guilds/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Guild Counsel: Why broken economies hurt guilds</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/02/the-guild-counsel-why-broken-economies-hurt-guilds/">The Guild Counsel: Why broken economies hurt guilds</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 02 May 2013 20:00:00 EST. OMG! It's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a> news! No, really. I'm not pulling your chain. It's all official and everything. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/namaste-entertainment/">Namaste Entertainment</a>, the creator of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/storybricks/"><em>Storybricks</em></a>, made the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/23/storybricks-team-announces-everquest-next-collaboration/">announcement</a> that it is collaborating with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a> on <em>EQ Next</em>. So go ahead and do your finally-some-news celebratory dance, I'll wait a moment. Just don't go all out and strain something; you'll want to be able to spring into celebration again when more is revealed, right?<br />
<br />
Sadly, the news is pretty much summed up right there in that one sentence; we don't have any more details to revel in and no time frame for getting more (well, other than SOE Live, of course!). But when has a lack of specifics derailed fan excitement about an upcoming game? Well we may not have definitive details, but using what we know about <em>Storybricks</em>, we can certainly speculate on what the relationship between the two means for Norrath's next incarnation.<br />
<br />
And if there was ever a relationship I was happy to see, it's <em>Storybricks</em> and <em>EverQuest Next's</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/27/tattered-notebook-eq-next-and-storybricks-sitting-in-a-tree/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tattered Notebook: EQ Next and Storybricks, sitting in a tree...</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/27/tattered-notebook-eq-next-and-storybricks-sitting-in-a-tree/">Tattered Notebook: EQ Next and Storybricks, sitting in a tree...</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 27 Apr 2013 16:00:00 EST. What's the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/storybricks/"><em>Storybricks</em></a> team been up to lately? Oh, nothing much. A few tweaks here, an idea or two there, and a whole lot of vacationing in Norrath. What's that, you say? It turns out that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/namaste-entertainment/">Namaste Entertainment</a> has been teaming up with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a> to work on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next/"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a>, of all things.<br />
<br />
"After several months of working together with Sony Online," the team posted, "we can finally reveal that we are collaborating on <em>EverQuest Next. EQNext</em> is 'the biggest sandbox ever designed' and we are extremely happy to be working on the most innovative MMORPG under development."<br />
<br />
The post couldn't go into specifics about the project, but it did say that the team is doing "remarkable things" with the game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/23/storybricks-team-announces-everquest-next-collaboration/">Storybricks team announces EverQuest Next collaboration</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 23 Apr 2013 22:30:00 EST. It's time once again to take a week off from looking at specific MMO soundtracks and open ourselves up to a theme instead. The topic? Battle music. Yeah, it can be some of the most obnoxious music in the game, especially after hearing it for the 3,000th time, but every once in a while I hear a piece that has some merit to it. These are the ones we want to examine today.<br />
<br />
What makes for a good battle music track? I think it has to get you excited without being annoying or grating and not so loud or incredibly noticeable that you can't help but get tired of it sooner rather than later. It was actually pretty tricky to pull together six such tracks for this column, but I managed to do with with the help of Colonel Bugle up there. He's got the best MP3 collection around.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/23/jukebox-heroes-battle-music/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Jukebox Heroes: Battle music!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/23/jukebox-heroes-battle-music/">Jukebox Heroes: Battle music!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 23 Apr 2013 20:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/">EverQuest</a></em>'s <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/shadows-of-fear/">Shadow of Fear</a></em> just launched; it's the update and second part to the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Rain-of-Fear/">Rain of Fear</a></em> expansion that released in November. Yes, you read that right: This is the old-school MMO's <em>19th expansion</em>. If that's not impressive enough for, the list of content that comes with the patch should hold over vets for a long time. If you're level 100, you'll be able to enjoy new zones and content and brand-new mechanics.<br />
<br />
The essence of fear is literally raining down in the form of crystalline shards. While players fight to restore balance, an ancient city has been resurrected with no explanation. Mysteries? New content? New spells, items, missions, raids quests, and storylines to discover? Yeah, we wanted in on that. With last Wednesday's release of <em><a href="https://www.everquest2.com/">EverQuest II's</a></em> latest prestige home, the totally awesome Hua Mein Retreat, I couldn't help but be focused on one of my favorite gaming features. I toured the new home, got to check out the break-out spots, and marveled at how pro <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> is with housing. Sure, there have been some misses when it comes to the prestige options, but things just keep getting better. Before long, my thoughts turned to the idea of housing in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Obviously, I am excited to play <em>EverQuest Next</em>. How could I not be? This studio has cornered the market on the most fun classes I have ever played (Dancer, Disciple, Fury, and Shaman) and the best housing systems I've personally had the pleasure to delve into <em>(</em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-galaxies"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a>, <a href="https://www.vanguardthegame.com/"><em>Vanguard</em></a>, and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii">EverQuest II</a></em>). And now it's making another sandbox.<br />
<br />
But will <em>EQN</em> pull me permanently away from <em>EQII</em>, a game where I've earned my seven-year vet rewards? That, my friends, will depend in large part on the housing.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/13/the-tattered-notebook-can-eq-nexts-housing-measure-up-to-everq/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Can EQ Next's housing measure up to EverQuest II's?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/13/the-tattered-notebook-can-eq-nexts-housing-measure-up-to-everq/">The Tattered Notebook: Can EQ Next's housing measure up to EverQuest II's?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 13 Apr 2013 16:00:00 EST. Welcome to Massively's guide to MMO sandboxes in 2013 and beyond. I've collected the essential details on all the major sandbox titles releasing this year and in the near future in one easy-to-reference article. If you're wondering whether <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/634/feature/6374/PostPAX-Interview.html/page/1"><em>ArcheAge</em></a> forces you to PvP, or if you can't tell <a href="http://www.therepopulation.com"><em>The Repopulation</em></a> from <a href="http://www.originsofmalu.com"><em>Origins of Malu</em></a>, this is your post.<br />
<br />
I'll be updating it as game features are added, removed, or revealed, so be sure to use the comments to let me know if I've overlooked a particularly noteworthy item. Finally, I want to point out that this isn't an exhaustive list because of the sheer number of sandbox projects ongoing. For now, I'm choosing to focus on the ones that will be playable in 2013/2014 as well as the projects that have a big-name developer attached.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/12/some-assembly-required-your-guide-to-mmo-sandboxes-in-2013-and/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Some Assembly Required: Your guide to MMO sandboxes in 2013 and beyond</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/12/some-assembly-required-your-guide-to-mmo-sandboxes-in-2013-and/">Some Assembly Required: Your guide to MMO sandboxes in 2013 and beyond</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 12 Apr 2013 10:00:00 EST. If you were even slightly luckier than I, you had the chance to traipse through the Chronoportals of <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> most recent event. The events inside these portals are a nod to the game's older sibling, the original <a href="https://www.everquest.com/"><em>EverQuest</em></a>, and include landscapes, characters, and dialogue that reflect that first incarnation of Norrath. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EQ</em></a> vets understood the inside jokes and humor, who then had to explain it to us young <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EQII</em></a> whippersnappers who'd never experienced the situations featured.<br />
<br />
Even though I missed out on this year's event (I was too busy trying to weasel some <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EQ Next</em></a> information out of folks at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013/">GDC</a> for you), it got me thinking: If <em>EQII</em> has Chronoportals back to <em>EQ</em>, will <em>EQ Next</em> have some back to <em>EQII</em>? Earlier this week, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/EA/">EA</a> president Frank Gibeau doubled-down on his company's earlier claims about <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SimCity/">SimCity's</a></em> MMOness, suggesting the game was built as a "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/eas-gibeau-simcity-plays-like-an-mmo/">massively multiplayer experience</a>" from the beginning. Rather than pick on Gibeau's comments (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/eas-gibeau-simcity-plays-like-an-mmo/">already done</a>), I want to consider what would happen if we admitted defeat. What if we just accepted that the term MMO has been utterly co-opted for online singleplayer games -- what should we call "real" MMOs <em>instead</em>?<br />
<br />
My colleagues suggest "persistent massively multiplayer online" -- PMMO, I suppose (would we have to change our name to "Persistently"?). While I like the idea of bringing back an old-school term like "persistent," and while it would certainly separate games like <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EverQuest/">EverQuest</a></em> from games like <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Diablo-III/">Diablo III</a></em>, I worry it also excludes MMORPGs that make heavy use of instancing (and therefore aren't as persistent as they seem) even as it includes games with persistent characters but not worlds.<br />
<br />
What do you think -- is it time to give up on the term MMO and adopt something else? Do we retreat to the imperfect label "MMORPG" or begin the hunt for a brand-new acronym?<br />

How many times have you found yourself asking, "Why won't the devs just listen?!" For any loyal MMO fan, it can be extremely frustrating to see feedback seemingly get ignored, and sometimes it feels as if there's a huge wall separating the fans from the developers.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Linda-Carlson/">Linda Carlson</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE's</a> Director of Global Community Relations, spoke with Massively at this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX-East-2013/">PAX East</a> to talk about SOE's efforts to break down that wall and improve the relationship between players and developers into something that's more collaborative, rather than contentious. Whether you're the most loyal SOE fan or someone who's vowed never to play another SOE game, you might be surprised at what she has to say.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/pax-east-2013-soes-linda-carlson-on-the-state-of-the-community/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX East 2013: SOE's Linda Carlson on the state of the community</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/pax-east-2013-soes-linda-carlson-on-the-state-of-the-community/">PAX East 2013: SOE's Linda Carlson on the state of the community</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Mar 2013 11:00:00 EST. If there's one pastime that MMO fans share, it's making predictions. Which games will succeed, and which ones will struggle? Which will go free-to-play, merge servers, or even shut down? And will there ever be an MMO that's crowned as <em>the</em> <em><a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com">WoW</a>-</em>killer?<br />
<br />
But what about the bigger picture of online gaming in general? We've seen it come a long way over the past decades, and it's not always easy to see where it's headed. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE's</a> director of development of the <em>EverQuest </em>franchise, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson/">Dave Georgeson</a>, sat down with Massively at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX-East-2013/">PAX East</a> this year to prognosticate on the future of online gaming. And of course, part of that future includes <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/EQ-Next/">EQ Next</a></em>, and while he still can't talk specifics, he did shed some light on the philosophy behind the game's design, with some hints about what players might see when it's revealed at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE-Live-2013/">SOE Live</a> this summer.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/25/pax-east-2013-soes-dave-georgeson-on-eq-next-and-the-future-of/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX East 2013: SOE's Dave Georgeson on EQ Next and the future of online gaming</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/25/pax-east-2013-soes-dave-georgeson-on-eq-next-and-the-future-of/">PAX East 2013: SOE's Dave Georgeson on EQ Next and the future of online gaming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 25 Mar 2013 15:30:00 EST. There's a lot going on in our lead picture here. There are question marks, a fungus person, a pointedly staring frog, and enough colors to give Crayola a run for its money. But what is it about? What does it mean?<br />
<br />
Reader Stacy helps clear things up: "That's mah frog. This was around April Fool's last year (those question marks are fireworks from that in-game event and are <em>amazing</em> in motion). This was my first house; I got it for free from the <a href="http://www.everquest.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a> in-game card game, so I did not have much decoration. I bought a bunch of pets from a man down the street and set them loose, then set off all my fireworks and partied the night away with frog and friends."<br />
<br />
See, if we did most of these activities in real life, we'd be in jail. Sequels are both the bane of and a fact of life for movies and video games. Well, "bane" is a strong word, and you're probably thinking of Batman right now anyway, but personally, I'm always willing to give the benefit of doubt to any continuation of a favorite franchise. While we don't see sequels pop up as often in MMOs, they do exist and have significant effects upon the original title that bears the same name.<br />
<br />
It's here that MMOs diverge from movies and other video games. With those, the original is not in any sort of danger, other than the perception of having its legacy dragged down into the muck (Caddyshack II, anyone?) and perhaps overstaying its welcome. An MMO sequel, on the other hand, can cause serious consequences to its ancestor.<br />
<br />
Here at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-game-archaeologist/">Game Archaeologist</a>, we look at classic games that have often seen their time come and go. But what happens to one of these titles <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/19/the-perfect-ten-sequelitis/">when a sequel attacks</a>? Almost anything, it turns out.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/23/the-game-archaeologist-when-sequels-attack/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist: When sequels attack!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/23/the-game-archaeologist-when-sequels-attack/">The Game Archaeologist: When sequels attack!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 23 Mar 2013 18:00:00 EST. In 2011, a new event was added to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> calendar, one that paid homage to the fantasy game's older sibling, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EverQuest</em></a>. Now each year around the anniversary of <em>EQ</em>, Chronoportals return to the land of Norrath, allowing <em>EQII</em> players the chance to travel through time to experience the nostalgia of the game that started it all.<br />
<br />
Scattered throughout Norrath, Chronoportals are available for every 10 levels. They send players to a specific<em> EQ</em> land where they can then participate in as many time rifts as their level allows. However, due to minimum level requirements, only the highest levels will be able to travel through every one. There are also three new paintings available from the event merchants.<br />
<br />
The event ends at precisely 2:59 a.m. Friday, March 29th, so if you want to check out a bit of <em>EQ</em> history and hear some amusing quips that celebrate it (like how to best spawn The Ancient Cyclops in Southern Desert of Ro), time is limited.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/21/chronoportals-return-to-everquest-ii-today/">Chronoportals return to EverQuest II today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 21 Mar 2013 10:00:00 EST. There is no two ways about it: Every time I started to pen this particular piece, I had to pause. You see, the story behind it all is steeped in emotion; inspiration, joy, pride, sadness, and togetherness are all a part of the heartwarming tale that is simply impossible to not be touched by (or in my case, completely choked up). And it's one that makes me proud to be a part of the <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> community.<br />
<br />
Last year we shared with you the story of a young boy whose simple wish for a fun place to play in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/17/the-tattered-notebook-the-touching-story-of-ribbitribbit-and-th/"><em>EQII</em></a> brought the community together in an unparalleled way. In order to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/17/the-tattered-notebook-the-touching-story-of-ribbitribbit-and-th/">make an extra special place for Ribbitribbit</a>, adventurers, raiders, and crafters left their guilds -- heck, even their servers -- to come aid in what became more than a simple island refuge. It became a multi-house playground that included a Tier 3 guild hall. The sheer volume of enthusiastic participation is enough to make any heart swell. Sadly, shortly thereafter Ribbitribbit lost his battle with cancer, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/26/the-tattered-notebook-the-passing-of-ribbitribbitt/">that same community mourned his passing</a>. Now, one year later, the same organizer who uncorked that first outpouring of generosity has brought players together again to commemorate community, continue philanthropy, and remember those who have been lost.<br />
<br />
Today's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a> invites you to become a part of this community with a look at Ribbitribbit Day 2013.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/16/the-tattered-notebook-eqiis-ribbitribbit-day-celebrates-commun/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: EQII's Ribbitribbit Day celebrates community</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/16/the-tattered-notebook-eqiis-ribbitribbit-day-celebrates-commun/">The Tattered Notebook: EQII's Ribbitribbit Day celebrates community</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 16 Mar 2013 14:00:00 EST. Hey there, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EverQuest</em></a>! You're looking mighty fine for a 14-year-old game. What's that, you say? You want us to come party with you? And you're willing to start a little early?<br />
<br />
Indeed, tomorrow is <em>EverQuest's</em> <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/eq/index.php?threads/the-14th-anniversary-party-has-begun.4559/">14th anniversary</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE">SOE</a> is kicking off the celebrations a day early. New anniversary missions that were designed at 2012's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE-Live/">SOE Live</a> are now active, as is all of the previous anniversary content. Double XP is also in effect to give your characters a boost.<br />
<br />
The developers released a few fun facts about <em>EverQuest </em>for its anniversary, including that the number of NPCs (344,935) is more than how many people live in Tampa Florida. Also, if you created a character on launch day in 1999, then according to Norrath time, that character would be 280 years old.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/15/everquests-14th-anniversary-celebration-begins-early/">EverQuest's 14th anniversary celebration begins early</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 15 Mar 2013 16:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/15/the-daily-grind-do-you-still-play-your-first-mmo/"><img alt="With thanks to Brad for the classic Ultima Online pic" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/one2.jpg" style="height: 348px; width: 530px;" /></a></div>
With <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/12/brad-mcquaid-returns-to-everquest/">Brad McQuaid's return</a> to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EverQuest/">EverQuest</a></em> in the news this week, nostalgia has invaded our comment section. The most veteran of our MMO commenters <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/12/brad-mcquaid-returns-to-everquest/">mused</a> about the days of meditating into spellbooks, losing levels on death, embarking on corpse runs, and waiting on the boat. No one even mentioned camping for jboots, begging to be put on a list for a spot in a dungeon group, or having your raid planejumped right before your eyes!<br />
<br />
I think old-schoolers know that the old days had more than their fair share of problems, which is why most of them are probably playing <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars-2/">Guild Wars 2</a></em> or <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Secret-World/">The Secret World</a></em> and not <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Asherons-Call/">Asheron's Call</a></em> or <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Anarchy-Online/">Anarchy Online</a></em>. Or are they? Are more people living in classic MMOs than they let on?<br />
<br />
My first was <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Ultima-Online/">Ultima Online</a></em>, and yes, I do poke my nose in once or twice a year, but it hasn't been my "main game" in a truly long time. What about you guys? Do you still play your first MMO? And if you've ever gone back, was it as you remembered?<br />
<br />

It's like getting the band together again. Less than a year ago, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Brad-McQuaid/">Brad McQuaid</a> returned to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Vanguard/">Vanguard</a></em>, the game that he had created. But McQuaid had room to go even further back to his first position of note... and now he's done it. It's been <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/eq/index.php?threads/12-years-i-feel-so-old.4319/">confirmed on the official forums</a> that Brad McQuaid is now back with <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EverQuest/">EverQuest</a></em>, a fact that has resulted in no shortage of fan shock.<br />
<br />
McQuaid says that after 12 years, he couldn't resist the chance to rejoin the team and get back to work on the game, which he feels still bears many traces of work he did back when he was first involved in development. He also hints that some of his first projects will involve elements of the game that have been hinted at since launch, although he avoids further explanation. Whether you're happy or sad about it as an old-school <em>EverQuest</em> player, you can't deny that <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/eq/index.php?threads/12-years-i-feel-so-old.4319/">it's big news</a>.<br />

Want a chance to rub elbows with some of the movers and shakers in the<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/"> SOE</a> world? Then head to the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel on March 22nd for a meet and greet during <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-east-2013/">PAX East</a>. <br />
Representatives from a number of SOE's titles will be there to chat, share stories, and even answer questions about the various games. You could discuss <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside-2"><em>PlanetSide 2</em></a> strategies with Community Rep <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Maggie-Krohn/">Maggie Krohn</a>, discuss <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EverQuest's</em></a> latest expansion with Sr. Community Manger <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-cleaver/">Eric Cleaver</a>, or even corner <em>EQ</em> franchise director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson/">Dave Georgeson</a> and see what news about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/EQ-Next/"><em>EQ Next</em></a> he might let slip! <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dragons-prophet/"><em>Dragon's Prophet</em></a> Senior Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/todd-carson">Todd Carson</a> will also be on hand to answer your questions about, well, dragons. And rumor has it that the drinks are on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/brasse/">Brasse</a>!<br />
<br />
What's a con event without swag? <em>Dragon's Prophet</em> priority access beta keys as well as T-shirts will be given out on a first come, first served basis. <em>EQ</em> goodies might be had as well. Folks planning to drop by can RSVP on the official Facebook <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/165914680228829/">event page</a> and follow updates on the various games' respective twitter accounts.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/08/soe-meet-and-greet-at-pax-east-open-to-everyone/">SOE meet and greet at PAX East open to everyone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 08 Mar 2013 21:00:00 EST. What single action could unite all Norrathians in grand celebration? In the words of Mel Gibson's William Wallace: Freeeeeeeeeedoooooooom.<br />
<br />
It's no secret that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest"><em>EverQuest</em></a> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/">EverQuest II</a></em> have had fairly restrictive free-to-play models, with severe limitations that unfortunately deterred some players from trying or sticking with the games. Although teased with a wide variety of races and classes, free (once called bronze) and silver players could choose from among only a few without dipping into their wallets. Other restrictions included limited bag slots, little to no shared bank access, and a very low cap on active quests.<br />
<br />
But if those restrictions are what put you off, fire up that launchpad again because I've got good news for you: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> has taken a giant eraser and wiped them right off of the free-to-play matrices. And now is a good time to get back into the games as the <em>EverQuest</em> franchise is set to commemorate its 14th anniversary with celebrations in both games.<br />
<br />
In my interview with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson/">Dave Georgeson</a>, the man at the helm of all things <em>EQ</em>, I scouted out the specifics of the F2P restrictions that will lift come the middle of next week. Georgeson also revealed some incoming updates for <em>EQ</em> as well as discussed the special events marking the anniversary that will kick off on March 16th. And you just know I tried to slip in a question or two about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/EQ-Next/"><em>EQ Next</em></a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/07/everquest-everquest-ii-repeal-f2p-restrictions-on-class-race/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EverQuest, EverQuest II repeal F2P restrictions on class, race, and more</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/07/everquest-everquest-ii-repeal-f2p-restrictions-on-class-race/">EverQuest, EverQuest II repeal F2P restrictions on class, race, and more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 07 Mar 2013 13:00:00 EST. When <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> first went <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/06/soe-releases-eqii-age-of-discovery-expansion-freeport-revamp-f/">free-to-play</a> in December 2011, a number of long-lost players poked their noses back into the game. But even before that, and certainly since then, veteran players have found cause to return to Norrath after a (sometimes very) prolonged absence. And why not? There are plenty of great things to lose yourself in within <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a>... as well as plenty of ways to feel lost! Invariably, those who have been gone for any length of time are confronted with a doozy of a headache-inducer upon their return: alternate advancements.<br />
<br />
Back in the dark recesses of time, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">The Tattered Notebook</a> brought you a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/27/the-tattered-notebook-a-newbie-look-at-alternate-advancement/">newbie guide to these AA points</a>. But much has changed in the ensuing two years, including the AAs. So it behooves us to take another look and update our information. The following is my personal journey with that at times intimidating system, sprinkled with tips, tricks, and tales of woe I've picked up along the way.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/02/the-tattered-notebook-attacked-by-aas-in-eqii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Attacked by AAs in EQII</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/02/the-tattered-notebook-attacked-by-aas-in-eqii/">The Tattered Notebook: Attacked by AAs in EQII</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 02 Mar 2013 14:00:00 EST. Fifty years from now, when we're old and gray and Massively is on version 3.0 and has discussion forums, my successor will be writing about an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EverQuest</em></a> producer letter update. This is because <em>EQ</em> simply will not die, and we fully expect at least one of the game's servers to survive global economic catastrophes, the onset of VR gaming, and various nuclear winters.<br />
<br />
The latest letter comes to us courtesy of producer Thom "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/thom-terrazas">Phathom</a>" Terrazas, who spends a good bit of virtual ink outlining things like Hero's Forge armor, the Shadows of Fear update with its new zones and storyline, housing tweaks, and additions to the dev team. That's not all that Terrazas talks about, either, but you'll need to head to the official <em>EQ</em> website to read the rest.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/01/everquest-producers-letter-talks-shadows-of-fear-update/">EverQuest producer's letter talks Shadows of Fear update</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 01 Mar 2013 09:30:00 EST. Few people are without opinions on minigames in MMOs. Some love 'em, some hate 'em, and some just ignore 'em. Some even despise that I won't type "th." Takes all types, really. Personally, I'm all for including new types of enjoyable systems that can be repeated, particularly if it benefits my character in some way.<br />
<br />
There's also this perception that minigames are just for kids. It's true that more kid-centric titles like <a href="http://www.freerealms.com/"><em>Free Realms</em></a> and <a href="http://www.clonewarsadventures.com/"><em>Clone Wars Adventures</em></a> thrive on minigames like you thrive on deep-fried butter balls, but these little diversions exist all over the place in "grownup" titles too. Holidays are a favorite time to trot them out, although there are plenty that exist year-round.<br />
<br />
Today we're going to look at 10 creative minigames that have tickled my fancy over the year. Yes, I used the word "fancy." Whatcha gonna do about it?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/28/the-perfect-ten-creative-mmo-minigames/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Perfect Ten: Creative MMO minigames</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/28/the-perfect-ten-creative-mmo-minigames/">The Perfect Ten: Creative MMO minigames</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Feb 2013 09:00:00 EST. So let's talk about adornments in <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>. If you're a relatively casual <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EQII</em></a> player like I am, you may not have any adornments on your gear. Ahh, l'amore. You can feel it in their air tonight, no? Oh wait, that was Thursday! No matter, 'tis still the season of love and loot in Norrath.<br />
<br />
Did I say loot? You bet your barbarian love notes I did! Holidays in <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> may be inspired by their real-world counterparts, but their true purpose lies in supplying us with oodles of special loot. Don't believe me? Just look at the plethora of items available from quests, crafting, and collections during any given celebration. Sure, there are fun lore lines to follow as well, and that aspect certainly deserves a nod, but there is no denying the prominence of holiday paraphernalia that fills our bags, banks, and vaults.<br />
<br />
Not that I am complaining, mind you; it's precisely this loot I am after -- specifically, the housing items. As a die-hard decorating nut, I look forward to the holidays like Erollisi Day to get my hands/paws/claws on these unique items offered only during the events. Unfortunately, like many of us plagued by real life, I don't always have tons of time to devote to the festivities, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII's</em></a> holidays are pretty elaborate affairs with a whole lot to do. So to help us both get the most treasure for our time, I've devised this speed guide to getting the holiday goods before the festival ends at 2:59 a.m EST on February 21st.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/16/the-tattered-notebook-a-guide-to-getting-erollisi-day-spoils-fo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: A guide to getting Erollisi Day spoils for the time-impaired</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/16/the-tattered-notebook-a-guide-to-getting-erollisi-day-spoils-fo/">The Tattered Notebook: A guide to getting Erollisi Day spoils for the time-impaired</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 16 Feb 2013 14:00:00 EST. I was going to update you fine folk on my adventures in rolling my 17,000th <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> alt for this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook">Tattered Notebook</a>, but <a href="http://www.soe.com">SOE</a> decided to drop a <strike>Fan Faire</strike> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/02/soe-live-scheduled-for-august-planet-hollywood/">Live date</a> on us, which sort of mucked up my nefarious plans.<br />
<br />
Why do we care about SOE Live? Well, there are multiple reasons, but the most important one is that instead of having to wait until October, we now get to see (and touch!) <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a> in early August!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/09/the-tattered-notebook-what-i-want-to-see-in-everquest-next/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: What I want to see in EverQuest Next</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/09/the-tattered-notebook-what-i-want-to-see-in-everquest-next/">The Tattered Notebook: What I want to see in EverQuest Next</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 09 Feb 2013 14:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/02/soe-live-scheduled-for-august-planet-hollywood/">While we've known</a> that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe-live-2013/">SOE Live</a> was moving location and dates this year to Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas from August 1st through the 4th, <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/station/posts/list.m?topic_id=11500055057">we now have official confirmation</a> from the studio itself.<br />
<br />
SOE Head of Global Relations <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Linda-Carlson/">Linda Carlson</a> drafted up <a href="https://www.soe.com/soelive/news-article.vm?id=002">an accompanying post</a> about the upcoming convention that includes several pictures from previous years. "We're all gamers too," she writes, "and can hardly wait to hang out with you again! Everyone at the company LOVES going to SOE Live, the one event each that focuses solely on our players. We have everything in common!"<br />
<br />
Carlson explained that the change in venue was made for several reasons, primarily to keep costs down, have more flexible meeting space, and experience better air quality. She confirmed that, as in previous years, kids will get in free to the event.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/06/sony-officially-announces-soe-live-2013/">Sony officially announces SOE Live 2013</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 06 Feb 2013 17:00:00 EST. This year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe-live">SOE Live</a> (formerly Fan Faire) is coming a little early, at least compared to the 2012 incarnation. It's also coming to you from a new location. The annual convention is moving house from Bally's Las Vegas to Planet Hollywood Las Vegas, and it's also happening in August instead of October. The official dates are August 1 - 4, 2013, if you're in a calendar-marking mood.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE</a> hasn't officially announced this as of yet, but some sharp eyes at <a href="http://eq2wire.com/2013/02/02/soe-live-2013-planet-hollywood-august-1-4/">EQ2Wire</a> picked up on the company's Live-related tweeting and the tiny dates at the top of the SOE Live web page. The company also hasn't announced an official itinerary as of yet, though it is expected to show off <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next/"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a> for the first time at the late summer event.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/02/soe-live-scheduled-for-august-planet-hollywood/">SOE Live scheduled for August, Planet Hollywood</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 02 Feb 2013 19:00:00 EST. It's time to talk experimentation in <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>. No, I don't mean sniffing, snorting, smoking, or otherwise illicitly subjecting yourself to the various flora in Norrath; I'm referring to one of the three new crafting prestige lines introduced with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Chains-of-Eternity/"><em>Chains of Eternity</em></a>. As I'm an armorer, gear augmentation definitely seemed the most relevant to my trade. (Besides, can you just see me cranking out 100 breastplates at a time?!) So as I leveled through the 90s, I started plopping those prestige points into that middle line and looked forward to the day I could beef up my armor.<br />
<br />
But let's face it -- I don't always choose things on the basis of logic; a Vulcan, I am not. What actually drew me to the experimentation prestige line, even before I had any clue what it would do, was a remark from the devs during the panel and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/24/soe-live-2012-everquest-ii-interviews-highlight-focus-on-crafti/">my interview</a> at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE-Live-2012/">SOE Live</a>: that failure was an option! Experimentation became <em>the</em> choice because it would bring back some of the feel of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/">EQII's</a></em> original crafting. You vets out there will know what I am talking about -- when there was some real risk involved in crafting and your skill meant something. I may still not have the chance to die at the forge anymore (booo!), but failure with experimentation comes with much more of a bite.<br />
<br />
Sound intriguing? Take a walk on the wild side and let's explore experimentation.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/02/the-tattered-notebook-experimentation-in-everquest-ii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Experimentation in EverQuest II</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/02/the-tattered-notebook-experimentation-in-everquest-ii/">The Tattered Notebook: Experimentation in EverQuest II</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 02 Feb 2013 18:00:00 EST. So the last time we talked <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>, I confessed that coming back to the game felt a lot like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/12/the-tattered-notebook-why-i-came-back-to-everquest-ii/">coming home</a>. That's still true, in more ways than I first realized. I don't know about you, but when I return after a lengthy absence I have an overwhelming urge to get things done. As I look around the place and figure out what's changed, what needs fixing, and what seems like fun, I tend to get overwhelmed, too, because there's just a lot of <em>stuff</em> that needs doing.<br />
<br />
That's exactly what happened to me in Norrath over the past two weeks. I logged in with my 92 Sage and my 92 Shadowknight, surveyed their vast array of abilities and possibilities, and promptly threw up my hands.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/26/the-tattered-notebook-decisional-paralysis-in-everquest-ii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Decisional paralysis in EverQuest II</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/26/the-tattered-notebook-decisional-paralysis-in-everquest-ii/">The Tattered Notebook: Decisional paralysis in EverQuest II</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 26 Jan 2013 14:00:00 EST. <br />
"Everybody is content for everyone else," Smedley said. "That's the core of our strategy moving forward. A simple way to put it is: By allowing players to interact with each other, we're providing tools. It's like we're building a gladiator arena and throwing in the swords... We might bust the tigers out or bring in new kinds of weapons, like a tank. In my opinion, the days when companies can make content [generation] the number one strategy, in the kinds of games we make, are over, because we can't win the war. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars:The Old Republic</em></a> proved that. Players bought it, loved it, and they played the game. Then they left."<br />
<br />
Smedley also hinted that SOE's long-awaited <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EQNext</em></a> project may be closer to fruition than many folks expect. While we've known for some time now to expect a playable demo of the fantasy sandbox at this fall's SOE Live convention, Smedley's comments to Gamasutra will probably invite plenty of speculation.<br />
<br />
"Players will get their hands on an actual release version of what we're doing late [this] year -- and I don't mean a beta," he said.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/24/smedley-talks-players-as-content-hints-at-eqnext-actual-releas/">Smedley talks players as content, hints at EQNext 'actual release version'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 Jan 2013 12:30:00 EST. You can go after a game's mechanics, a game's sound, and even a game's grammar, but when you go after a game's looks, well, then you're treading on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/one-shots/">One Shots</a> territory. And when that happens, you'd best tread lightly, my friends.<br />
<br />
Reader John took umbrage with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/11/second-wind-vanguard/">Matt's take on <em>Vanguard</em></a>, especially in regard to its art design, and sent in proof to rebut it: "Having started a new character in <a href="http://www.vanguardthegame.com/"><em>Vanguard</em></a> over the weekend, I set out to prove that, just perhaps, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/vanguard/"><em>Vanguard</em></a> isn't quite as ugly as Matt Daniel seems to think. It would be a shame if people got the wrong impression, after all."<br />
<br />
Personally, I adore <em>Vanguard's</em> aesthetic, but not everyone shares that opinion, nor should he -- to each his own, right? Hit the jump to see John's screenshot in its full glory as well as many other terrific player-submitted pictures!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/20/one-shots-interior-decoration/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>One Shots: Interior decoration</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/20/one-shots-interior-decoration/">One Shots: Interior decoration</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 20 Jan 2013 10:00:00 EST. Two weeks ago I closed my <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/05/the-tattered-notebook-tips-and-tricks-to-start-the-new-year-in/">handy tips and tricks guide</a> by encouraging players to shun power-leveling in <a href="http://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>. At that point, I touched on the issue by talking about how you miss so much of the game by skipping all the stories and lore in the quests. I even cautioned that people hesitate to group with someone who doesn't yet know his or her class. But the reasons to avoid it go so much deeper than what I mentioned there. There are definite pitfalls when characters are power-leveled, even for the folks who have other max-level characters!<br />
<br />
Some may be wondering why this topic is hot enough at the moment to warrant more of my attention. As those of you who read level 1-9 chat already know, there was recently a massive surge in power-leveling services and a population explosion of max-level characters, all due to the unexpected consequences of combining the new experimentation crafting prestige line with playing as your character in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/20/some-assembly-required-a-look-at-eqiis-dungeon-maker/">Dungeon Maker</a>. While this latest power-leveling scheme has been negated (thanks to last Tuesday's patch), many folks are feeling the fallout of using the service.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/19/the-tattered-notebook-pitfalls-of-powerleveling-in-eqii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Pitfalls of powerleveling in EQII</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/19/the-tattered-notebook-pitfalls-of-powerleveling-in-eqii/">The Tattered Notebook: Pitfalls of powerleveling in EQII</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 19 Jan 2013 16:00:00 EST. As we speak, elite MMO scientists are huddling in secret underground laboratories and developing the next generation of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/griefing">griefing</a> technology. They're mixing the tears of orphans, the ruined underwear of wedgie victims, and seven types of prank phone calls to make the ultimate experience for cyber jackholes. Rumor is... they're close to a breakthrough.<br />

When I log into <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> after a long absence, I feel a little bit like a world-weary vagabond who's finally earned a rest. I see myself -- or my avatar, at least -- dropping his luggage on a familiar front porch and surveying the surroundings he vividly remembers despite months (sometimes years) of travel abroad.<br />
<br />
There's a fine coating of dust on the furniture. The neighborhood has a bunch of new rules and as many new neighbors. All in all, though, the spires of Freeport and its refurbished waterfront are a welcome sight. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EQII</em></a> has always been the one MMO that I return to without fail; it's also the one that I've played the most, now that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-galaxies"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a> is gone.<br />
<br />
This time around, I'm coming back not for an expansion or a new feature (although there are plenty of both in the world's deepest themepark) but rather for the need for a little MMO stability. And hey, I'd be lying if I said I'm not partly motivated by the promise of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EQNext</em></a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/12/the-tattered-notebook-why-i-came-back-to-everquest-ii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Why I came back to EverQuest II</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/12/the-tattered-notebook-why-i-came-back-to-everquest-ii/">The Tattered Notebook: Why I came back to EverQuest II</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 12 Jan 2013 16:00:00 EST.
