I'm not much of a shooter fan and probably never will be. Sure, I have as much fun blasting my way through monsters as the next gamer, but I rarely have the patience or physical stamina to overcome the pains and frustrations of shooter PvP. After all, my first rule of PvP applies especially well to shooters: <em>There is always someone better than you</em>. <a href="http://www.planetcyrene.com/html/index.html"><em>Planet Cyrene</em></a>, the new world being added to the impressive portfolio of <a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com/">Entropia Universe</a>, tasks players tasks similar to those found in <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/home/?"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> and mixes in PvP arenas that promise to frustrate (or delight) players, depending on their skill level. I sat down with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ed-robles-III/">Ed Robles III</a>, lead developer for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/entropia/">Planet Cyrene</a>,</em> to see just how nasty and expensive things might get.<br />
<br />
Remember, this is the Entropia Universe we are talking about, and that means players will spend real money on bullets, armor, and practically everything else. Fortunately, players can earn items that are worth real money as well. Call it gambling or whatever you want, but it still seems to be a pretty successful formula.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/free-for-all-planet-cyrene-adds-to-the-high-stakes-worlds-of-en/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Free for All: Planet Cyrene adds to the high-stakes worlds of Entropia</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/free-for-all-planet-cyrene-adds-to-the-high-stakes-worlds-of-en/">Free for All: Planet Cyrene adds to the high-stakes worlds of Entropia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 16 May 2012 20:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mindark">MindArk</a> has given new meaning to the term phat lewt with its latest update for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/entropia-universe"><em>Entropia Universe</em></a>. Players may now acquire one of a thousand <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Planet-Calypso/">Planet Calypso</a></em> land deeds simply by hunting, mining, or crafting while in game.<br />
<br />
Each land deed carries a real-world value of $100 (and deeds are often sold for much more on the open market), according to a MindArk press release. The deeds also provide revenue sharing through the game's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/04/entropia-universe-player-drops-2-5-million-on-virtual-land-deed/">citizenship program</a>. Deeds began dropping yesterday, and MindArk says that they will continue to do so throughout 2012.<br />
<br />
<em>Planet Calypso</em> is the oldest planetary playfield in <em>Entropia Universe</em>. The game boasts more than one million registered accounts and over $400 million in annual user-to-user transactions.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/entropia-universe"><em>Entropia Universe</em></a> has always skirted the line between game and advertising scheme, and the latest evidence of this is a new social media program developed by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mindark">MindArk</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/socialtype">Socialtype</a> that aims to reward existing players for recruiting new ones.<br />
<br />
MMO recruitment drives are nothing new, but the kicker here is that the potential recruits can experience a slice of <em>Entropia</em> via their Facebook accounts. MindArk is using a software app called Bamboo to connect the MMO and Facebook portions of <em>Entropia</em>. Bamboo "turns your players into a highly-motivated marketing army," according to the <a href="http://www.socialtype.com/bamboo/index.html">app's website</a>. "Bamboo users become ambassadors. They earn points for promoting your game through their social network. Every action is incentivized."<br />
<br />
MindArk says that the <em>Entropia</em> atmosphere has been ported to the Facebook app via its UI, graphics, and lore. New users can also add to said lore via their own unique plots.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/entropia-universe"><em>Entropia Universe</em></a> is in the news again, and yes, it's because of a huge real-money transaction initiated by one of the game's players. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mindark">MindArk</a> says that a single investor bought $2.5 million US worth of land lot deeds on Calypso, which is one of the game's oldest planetary zones. <em>Entropia's</em> citizenship system originally launched <a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com/bulletin/buzz/2011/11/16/Calypso-Land-Lot-Deeds.xml">last December</a> with almost 60,000 land deeds up for grabs. The mechanic allows for revenue sharing among citizens; the annual return on investments is hovering around 27%.<br />
<br />
In a nutshell, the system allows players to amass weekly profits directly from the game after an initial investment of $100 for a single land deed. Investment opportunities are open to anyone with an <em>Entropia</em> avatar, and MinkArk also reports that the game features over one million registered accounts and over $400 million in annual user-to-user transactions.<br />

<div>
	<a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/mindark">MindArk</a>'s <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/planet-calypso">Planet Calypso</a></em> is certainly one of the most unique virtual worlds out there, due in large part to the fact that the game's real estate is bought, sold, and traded for real-world cash. Land management, however, has generally been an activity for the ludicrously rich, with some properties costing as much as 500,000 USD.<br />
	<br />
	MindArk looks to change that, however, by introducing a whopping 60,000 new plots of land (each measuring at 100 square meters) that can be bought for the (relatively) low price of 100 USD. Each deed that a player purchases "entitles the holder to a share of the 50% planet partner Gross Revenue generated by <em>Planet Calypso</em>." So if you've got a few hundred bucks to blow on virtual real estate and want a piece of the pie, head on over to the official site and sign up.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/10/mindark-announces-planet-calypso-land-grab/">MindArk announces Planet Calypso land grab</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 10 Nov 2011 18:30:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/planet-michael"><em>Planet Michael</em></a> creator <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/see-virtual-worlds">SEE Virtual Worlds</a> has announced that it is now the proud owner of even more well-known intellectual properties. The studio now owns the rights to Men in Black 3, Total Recall (the remake, bleh), Asterix, War of the Worlds, and Waterworld.<br />
	<br />
	Whether the studio will turn these properties into MMOs as well, however, remains to be seen. CEO Martin Ballas said only, "These properties are tied to memorable moments and incredible characters that players are going to interact with in future SEE-created digital and online interactive video games." SEE Virtual Worlds, however, has purchased <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/planet-calypso"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> for a staggering $6 million, which could hint at a possible Total Recall-themed online destination. <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> is an odd sort of virtual world, a free-to-play game that allows players to exchange in-game money for real cash. It's gearing up for <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/planet-calypso/medusa/">the auction of the new Medusa's Head islands</a>, which contain a variety of services and species for the enterprising landowner. And in anticipation of just that, <a href="http://account.entropiauniverse.com/news/pages/2010/12/01/9025/index.xml">a new update</a> has offered the perfect vehicles for running through an unspoiled tropical paradise -- high-powered combat tanks, helicopters, and warboats bristling with deadly armaments.<br />
<br />
Along with three new Nordic-named vessels -- the Megingjord tank, the Naglfar boat, and the Gungnir helicopter -- the update brings with it a variety of updates to the use of vehicles. Commissioning has been removed, and a weapon mounting system has been added to help facilitate the addition of aforementioned deadly armaments. Even if they're not planning on bidding on the brand-new islands, <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/entropia-universe"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> players should be able to <a href="http://account.entropiauniverse.com/news/pages/2010/12/01/9025/index.xml">enjoy the environment in their vehicles of choice</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/11/drivers-wanted-on-planet-calypso/">Drivers wanted on Planet Calypso</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 11 Dec 2010 20:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/home/"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> is one of the more unusual games that we cover here at Massively, mostly thanks to its real cash economy. Massively's Beau Hindman <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/12/rise-and-shiny-recap-planet-calypso/">spent some time in the game recently for Rise and Shiny</a>, giving his experience as a new player. <br />
<br />
Our newest peek at the game is a bit more advanced and a lot of fun. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/planet-calypso"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> is in the middle of <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/planet-calypso/harbinger/">the Harbinger event</a>, an ongoing new challenge that introduces players to new areas, new enemies, and some formidable new foes. The <em>Planet Calypso</em> team was kind enough to invite me on a tour of the event, so follow along after the jump for a closer look!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/16/planet-calypsos-new-content-takes-players-on-a-wild-ride/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Planet Calypso's new content takes players on a wild ride</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/16/planet-calypsos-new-content-takes-players-on-a-wild-ride/">Planet Calypso's new content takes players on a wild ride</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 16:00:00 EST. If you're a frequenter of <a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com/"><em>Entropia Universe</em></a>, chances are you've heard of <a href="http://www.entropiaplanets.com/wiki/About_Club_NEVERDIE">Club NEVERDIE</a>, the virtual night spot purchased by John "NeverDie" Jacobs in 2005 for the tidy sum of US $100,000. The club, located on a giant asteroid orbiting the planet Calypso, was history's most expensive virtual item for a number of years until it was surpassed by the purchase of the <a href="http://www.entropiaplanets.com/wiki/Crystal_Palace_Space_Station">Crystal Palace Space Station</a> in 2009 (a US $330,000 sale). <br />
<br />
Now, an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/entropia-universe"><em>Entropia Universe</em></a> fansite is reporting that the remaining portions of Club NEVERDIE have been sold to a gamer named John Foma Kalun in a transaction valued at US $335,000. Jacobs had previously sold zones of the asteroid, known as Biodomes in game terms, for US $300,000. Read all about it at <a href="http://www.entropiaplanets.com/forums/entropia-news/3739-asteroid-goes.html">EntropiaPlanets.com</a>.<br />

<a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> is one of the more interesting concepts in the free-to-play arena, as it's a game in which you can theoretically make real money from playing the game. It looks like the concept is expanding a bit with <a href="http://www.prlog.org/11045850-arkadia-studios-developing-treasure-hunting-mmo-planet-with-real-cash-economy.html">the announcement</a> of <a href="http://www.planetarkadia.com/"><em>Planet Arkadia</em></a>, an environment for virtual treasure hunters. Part of the same overarching concept and universe as <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/entropia-universe">Planet Calypso</a>,</em> the game will be a chance for players to enjoy the thrill of treasure hunting without the actual logistical issues of stealing things and then selling them.<br />
<br />
The game is going to bear another similarity to its predecessor, however, in that the treasures being unearthed will potentially be worth real-world currency. That should provide players of the game with a little added incentive, along with concept art by Feng Zhu and the promise of an immersive virtual world. Tentatively set for release in early 2011, <a href="http://www.planetarkadia.com/"><em>Planet Arkadia</em> already boasts a site</a> with preview images and more information on the game environment. So if you've always wanted a chance for your virtual treasure to translate into real money, your dream might be <a href="http://www.prlog.org/11045850-arkadia-studios-developing-treasure-hunting-mmo-planet-with-real-cash-economy.html">closer to fruition than you think</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/05/entropia-universe-expands-with-treasure-hunting-on-planet-arkadi/">Entropia Universe expands with treasure hunting on Planet Arkadia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 05 Nov 2010 11:30:00 EST. <a href="http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/708447/The-MMO-Report-Thursday-November-4th.html">The MMO Report</a> returns to its familiar studio digs this week, and host Casey Schreiner has a lot of ground to cover in the segment. In between shots at the Tea Party and senator-elect Rand Paul, he even manages to discuss a few MMOs. First up is the new user generated content tool in <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, called the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/27/star-trek-online-preps-player-generated-content-tools/">Foundry</a> and currently undergoing beta testing.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.bioware.com">BioWare's</a> new <a href="http://www.swtor.com"><em>The Old Republic</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/29/spy-the-swtor-imperial-agent/">Imperial Agent</a> video also makes an appearance, along with a brief discussion of <a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com/"><em>Entropia Universe's</em></a> new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/27/stake-or-be-staked-van-helsing-mmo-to-take-the-fight-to-classic/">Van Helsing</a> monster planet.  Finally, Casey reveals his soft spot for <a href="http://www.tera-online.com"><em>TERA</em></a> via the newly released Slayer video, and also talks a bit about <a href="http://crypticstudios.com/">Cryptic's</a> decision to go F2P with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/26/champions-online-going-f2p/"><em>Champions Online</em></a>.<br />

It's the perfect time of year to announce a horror-themed MMO, so we're not surprised that at least one studio has stepped up to do so. SEE Virtual Worlds, the same company that's working on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/21/michael-jackson-virtual-world-planned-for-2011-launch/"><em>Planet Michael</em></a> (which may or may not still have you giggling sporadically), is turning <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Monsters">the world of Van Helsing</a> into a MMO with the blessing of <a href="http://www.universalstudios.com/">Universal Studios</a>.<br />
<br />
With eight decades of movie monsters under its belt, Universal Studios is not lacking for iconic ghoulies and gremlins: The Wolf Man, Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, the Mummy, Dracula and the Creature from the Black Lagoon have frightened generations of children and lingered in the imaginations of millions more. <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/universal-unleash-frankenstein-other-classic-32813">In the game</a>, players will step into the role of a Van Helsing-type figure who's tasked with taking down the hairiest, slimiest and most bitey of them all. <br />
<br />
Both <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/planet-michael/"><em>Planet Michael</em></a> and the Universal Monsters MMO will exist within <a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com/">Entropia Universe's</a> domain, which houses virtual worlds and utilizes a real-world cash exchange economy. <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/universal-unleash-frankenstein-other-classic-32813">You can read the full Hollywood Reporter article here</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/27/stake-or-be-staked-van-helsing-mmo-to-take-the-fight-to-classic/">Stake or be staked: Van Helsing MMO to take the fight to classic movie monsters</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 27 Oct 2010 22:00:00 EST. Falling damage probably isn't something many of us stop to think about, unless we play Monks, Rogues, or other classes that have the ability to level up a safe-fall type of ability. But for people who have been inhabiting <a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com/"><em>Entropia Universe</em></a>, falling damage is something new and shiny -- an option that was only recently put in. Today's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/One-Shots/">One Shots</a> from Razormat features the silliness that arose after falling damage was added: players tossing their avatars off the top of the tallest structures they could find! Razormat writes in to explain: "<em>In this picture you can see the avatars in mid-air after they jumped off the Port Atlantis Tower. Recently fall damage was introduced in </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Entropia-Universe/">Entropia Universe</a><em>, and the players are always looking for new ways to have fun</em>."<br />

It's not one of the largest games out there, so most people might not know what you're talking about if you mention <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/home/"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a>. Those who do might well only think of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/29/crystal-palace-space-station-auction-tops-330-000-us-dollars/">highly publicized auctions and trades</a>, in which players have spent large amounts of real-world money to purchase land and facilities (which bring in plenty of real-world money themselves, for the record). But beyond that there is an actual game world, complete with an ongoing storyline. As spotlighted in <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/newsletter/campaign/2010/August_Nw10_9/index.xml">the newest game newsletter</a>, that storyline is being turned up by a new event -- an ominous approach by robots.<br />
<br />
The last major assault by the robots left the previous capital city a smoking ruin, and not coincidentally coincided with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/15/planet-calypso-formerly-entropia-universe-converts-to-cryengin/">the game's graphical update</a> to <a href="http://www.cryengine2.com/">CryEngine 2</a>. This time, the colonists have begun decoding messages sent by the robots, and defenses are gathering to ensure that a repeat of the last event doesn't take place -- even as the robots field a new technology known as "Hydra." Several helpful links for information may be found <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/newsletter/campaign/2010/August_Nw10_9/index.xml">within the newsletter</a>, which promises plenty of enjoyment for the players in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/entropia-universe/"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/26/the-robots-are-rising-on-planet-calypso/">The robots are rising on Planet Calypso</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 26 Aug 2010 11:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/home/"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a>, the long-running real-cash economy MMORPG from <a href="http://www.mindark.com/company/first-planet-company-ab/">First Planet Company</a> and <a href="http://www.mindark.com/">MindArk</a>, will soon offer a new and dedicated starting area for new players. Previously, player colonists were at the mercy of the title's veteran residents and were thrown right into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planet-calypso"><em>Planet Calypso's</em></a> considerable learning curve with little in the way of an introduction.<br />
<br />
Now, newbies can partake of the safe starting area (restricted to new players), learn the game's basics, and grab missions in the new Calypso Gateway. Players will hunt, mine, and craft using starter equipment on the secluded arrival island, and they will not be able to return once they've completed the tutorials and traveled to mainland Calypso.<br />
<br />
Check out the <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/home/">official site</a> for all the details.<strong><br />

While <a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com/"><em>Entropia Universe</em></a> tends to only make major headlines when players buy or sell something that can translate into a bunch of real-world cash, we still like to keep up with what's going on in this interesting virtual world. For example, we noted that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/21/planet-calypso-and-entropia-universe-unveiling-vehicles/">vehicles were coming</a> to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Entropia-Universe/">Entropia Universe</a></em> recently -- and that freebies would be given out. Today, we have a screenshot from reader <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/OspreyTherian">Vivian K</a>., who was there, and tells us more about the giveaways:<br />
<br />
"<em>Entropia was a madhouse as scores of players dashed from teleporter to teleporter today searching for Emma, who was handing out vehicles to a few lucky players. I caught up with her a few times - and in this shot she's buried under a crowd of rowdy Entropians and I'm just about to crash. I never did get a vehicle but it was fun haring after her, even though, as one player said, the amount of sheer begging was somewhat sickening. I've got other screenshots, including players making offerings and the cars themselves, but this sums up the day's event nicely.</em>"<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/One-Shots/">One Shots</a> needs you! While we try to cover as many worlds as we can, we don't always get to see the interesting events. That's why we love to hear from readers who can give us the insider scoop! <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/home/"><em>Entropia Universe</em></a>, the long-running virtual world from <a href="http://www.mindark.com/">MindArk</a>, has <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/news/pages/2010/06/18/2066/index.xml">announced</a> the introduction of in-game vehicles in their 11.2 patch which is tentatively scheduled for today. Ground-based vehicles are the tip of the proverbial iceberg, as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mindark">MindArk</a> has plans to implement boats, aircraft, and spacecraft in the near future.<br />
<p>"<em>With this new system, the whole community now has the opportunity to build vehicles. The features included in today's release are just the beginning of the vehicle system content. The development teams are already working with upcoming features [including] boats. It will soon be possible to cruise the lakes and oceans on the planets of </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/entropia-universe">Entropia Universe</a><em>. Several different types of boats will be available</em>," MindArk said in a press release.<br />

It may be a MMO about planet colonization, but we dare you to look at the title of <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> and not imagine <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeKqrU8AKlg&amp;feature=related">a neverending Jamaican party resort</a>. In any case, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planet-calypso/"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> team is pleased as punch <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/news/pages/2010/04/21/1604/index.xml">to announce its 2010|2 update</a>, which includes a whopping 80 new missions. You may recall that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/19/planet-calypso-debuts-their-new-mission-system-with-a-bang/">the 2010|1 update</a> introduced the mission system back in February of this year.<br />
<br />
20 of these new missions are dedicated to the mysterious Cyclops volcano (which also appeared with the 2010|1 update), with the remaining 60 devoted to the "Iron Challenge" of finding and exterminating the local critters. The latter is done, to quote the patch notes, <em>"in order to raise awareness of firearms issues."</em> <br />
<br />
The 2010|2 update comes with a few other additions, as well as a trunk full of bug fixes. <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/news/pages/2010/04/21/1604/index.xml">You can read the full patch notes</a> over at the <em>Planet Calypso</em> site.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/23/planet-calypso-2010-2-update-adds-80-missions/">Planet Calypso 2010|2 update adds 80 missions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 23 Apr 2010 19:00:00 EST. The team over at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/first-planet-company">First Planet Company</a>, the minds behind the MMO/<em><a href="http://www.secondlife.com">Second Life</a></em> hybrid <em><a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com">Planet Calypso</a></em>, have recently welcomed <a href="http://www.entropiagateway.com/2010/02/new-community-manager/">a brand new community manager</a> onto their staff -- Hanne Einan Gulbrandsen. Gulbrandsen is the game's first dedicated community manager, bringing the virtual world in line with the company practices of other MMO companies.<br />
<br />
But, while Gulbrandsen settles into his new office and title, First Planet Company has also detailed their <a href="http://www.entropiagateway.com/2010/02/planet-calypso-roadmap-for-2010/">development roadmap for this year</a> -- going over future additions such as vehicles, a new questing/mission system, and the <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/planet-calypso/subscriber-bonus-nw6/subscriber-bonus-nw10-1/index.xml">addition of fish to the world</a> (as shown above.) The mission system will finally give <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/entropia-universe"><em>Calypso</em></a> MMO style storyline quests, offering players a new way to play the game and experience the planet's lore. How these new quests will impact the game's real money-based economy will be interesting, especially if doing them offers in-game rewards.<br /><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/12/planet-calypso-welcomes-their-new-community-manager-while-lookin/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Planet Calypso welcomes their new community manager while looking to the future</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/12/planet-calypso-welcomes-their-new-community-manager-while-lookin/">Planet Calypso welcomes their new community manager while looking to the future</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 12 Feb 2010 10:00:00 EST. Remember a while back when we mentioned that the <a href="http://www.entropiadirectory.com/wiki/Crystal_Palace_Space_Station">Crystal Palace Space Station</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/08/who-wants-to-buy-a-virtual-spacestation/">went up for sale</a> in <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a>, marking the start of another insane bidfest to claim what could be a very real source of income? Well, the auction is over and the winner has been declared -- Buzz "Erik" Lightyear has taken control of Crystal Palace for the very, very hefty sum of 3,300,000 PED. For those of you who want to know the real world value, you're looking at a cool 330,000 dollars.<br />
<br />
While this seems insane (and it probably is, to some degree), Mr. Lightyear will be looking at revenue coming in from the hunting conducted on the space station, plus the purchases made there. In short, this space station is a walking money generator, especially as it's the only place to find alien body parts used to make high-end armor. All Buzz has to do is let the station run, set a decent tax rate, keep it stocked with things to hunt, and he can take all the PED he earns and translate it into cold, hard cash.<br />

<div align="left">The hybrid virtual world / MMORPG <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> has recently leveled up to <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/news/pages/2009/12/17/7030/index.xml">version 10.6</a> and has introduced the brand new system of item enhancement to the game as well as the winner of a community contest.<br /><br />Item enhancement is very much like it sounds -- a way to upgrade and customize your weapons and armors -- but it works more like an item leveling system than a crafting component. As players use items, they will now rank up into tiers. Tiers upgrade the item itself, but they also unlock spaces on the weapon called sockets. Players can add connectors onto the sockets to further customize the item's statistics, but be careful! Connectors can break during the use of an item, but they can be stacked to minimize damage.<br /><br />Also, the large <a href="http://www.entropiaforum.com/forums/bestiary/174374-proteron.html">Proteron</a> has made an appearance on the planet! The creature is the result of the community <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/news/pages/2009/09/01/4737/index.xml">"Create-A-Critter" contest</a>, so congratulations are in order for Apsara Sofia Rozenkreutz! Congratulations!<br /><br />For all of the <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/news/pages/2009/12/17/7030/index.xml">patch note goodness</a>, check it out on the main site. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">You sir! Can I interest you in this pristine virtual space station? No? Ma'am! Over here ma'am! How would you like to live amongst the stars in a brand new virtual space station?<br />
<br />
If you think this post is a silly post, then think again. <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> (formerly <em>Entropia Universe</em>) really is <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/news/pages/2009/12/08/6323/index.xml">auctioning off</a> one of their virtual space stations to their players, making this the third time that a major piece of Calypso property has been auctioned off to a private party. This time it's the <a href="http://www.entropiadirectory.com/wiki/Crystal_Palace_Space_Station">Crystal Palace Space Station</a> that's up for auction, one of Calypso's long time prime off-world hunting grounds.<br />
<br />
What makes this auction so newsworthy is the fact that it will be conducted through <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/entropia-universe"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a>'s auction systems using PED (Project Entropia Dollar), which basically makes the virtual space station worth real money, as the PED needs to be purchased by the player with real world currency.</div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/08/who-wants-to-buy-a-virtual-spacestation/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Who wants to buy a virtual spacestation?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/08/who-wants-to-buy-a-virtual-spacestation/">Who wants to buy a virtual spacestation?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 Dec 2009 15:00:00 EST. <div align="left"><a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/news/pages/2009/08/27/6759/index.xml">CryEngine 2</a> is pretty. Really pretty. So pretty, in fact, that we added a rainbow to the above picture, just to amplify the already intense pretty with more pretty. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNUAu_gwI_U">Ronnie James Dio</a> would be proud of us today.<br /><br />But, if you haven't guessed, <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> is back online and is proudly sporting their new graphics engine with glee. Did you know that this is the first time the night ever passed over Calypso, as they never had a day/night cycle before? Now you know.<br /><br />Also, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/15/planet-calypso-formerly-entropia-universe-converts-to-cryengin/">as promised</a>, today marks the opening of <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/news/pages/2009/08/27/6759/index.xml">The Second Golden Age of Calypso event</a> along with the upload of version 10.5. During this event, special rare items will be dropped throughout the world. These items will only be available for this event, so if you're an avid player of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/entropia-universe"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> or were looking to give the free-to-play game a try, now would be a pretty good time to do it.<br /><br />However, you don't have to rush if you don't want to. The Second Golden Age will continue all the way until Christmas, so that gives you a good four months of event time to rack up all of those special goodies.<br /><br />[Thanks, Dargon!]</div>

My mojo wasn't working, the Force was not strong with me, etc. I'm back in the swing of things now, however. I tried to break my habit, and move on to pastures new with <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online/">Lord of the Rings Online</a></em>, but it seems that I'm a one-game kind of guy, and I ended up back at <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/">World of Warcraft</a></em>. <br /><br />Before I settled back in to routine however, I did do some exploring and thinking. Listening to my colleague's advice, I spent some time with MMOs that I otherwise wouldn't have bothered with. I even dipped my toes into the waters of Second Life. <br /><br />I've tooled around in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life/">Second Life</a></em> more than once, trying to get a good handle on it. Try as I might though, it never seems to gel with me, never seems to click. That's probably more down to me than any identifiable fault with the game. That said, any game which, if I recall correctly, used to offer a furry as an option at character creation automatically scores low in my book. <br /><br />That was a joke, hold off on the flames please.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/18/behind-the-curtain-playing-in-the-sandbox/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Behind the Curtain: Playing in the sandbox</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/18/behind-the-curtain-playing-in-the-sandbox/">Behind the Curtain: Playing in the sandbox</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 18 Apr 2009 12:00:00 EST. There was a brief interlude where the <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2009/02/23/the-argent-tournament-in-patch-3-1/">Argent Tournament</a> piqued my curiosity, so I grabbed the PTR downloader to give that a try. That lasted all of about an hour, when I realised just how long it would take me to download the files. I'm not sure if I should blame BT for my frequently crappy connection speed, or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Blizzard-/">Blizzard</a> because they can't seem to create a decent downloader. It doesn't matter really, as I can QQ about both equally.<br /><br />Then it hit me - burn out didn't need to be a bad thing. In a shocking turn of events, I decided to actually listen to our readers' <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/21/behind-the-curtain-on-burnout/">advice</a>, and spend some time with other MMO, and maybe try a change of pace.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/07/behind-the-curtain-just-when-i-thought-i-was-out/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Behind the Curtain: Just when I thought I was out</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/07/behind-the-curtain-just-when-i-thought-i-was-out/">Behind the Curtain: Just when I thought I was out</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 07 Mar 2009 16:00:00 EST. It seems <em><a href="http://www.mindark.com/partners/">Entropia Universe</a></em> has fully embraced the "world building" aspect of its virtual space. Evolving from a virtual world to a virtual world development platform, <a href="http://www.mindark.com">MindArk</a> has announced the creation of a new subsidiary named <a href="http://mindark.se/planetroster/roster.html">First Planet</a>, which will operate, develop and market a new MMO entitled <em>Planet Calypso</em>. Since this MMO will be created through <em>Entropia</em>'s guidance and tools, it will be built on the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entropia_Universe"><em>Entropia Universe</em></a> platform and be considered one of <em>EU</em>'s planets. <br /><br />The scope of First Planet won't stop at <em>Planet Calypso</em>, though. It has been created to "solely focus on platform development suitable for a wide range of industries interested in utilizing the opportunities of the 3D internet." Other upcoming planets include <em>Creative Kingdom, China Recreative Dreamland, Next Island</em> and <em>See</em>. As was recently discussed in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/06/the-future-of-mmos-subscription-vs-free-to-play/">a similar topic here at Massively</a>, the idea of micropayments for our MMOs and virtual worlds is growing in popularity among game developers, but is it the best option? According to several highly-successful companies such as <a href="http://www.nexon.net/NX.aspx?PART=/Main">Nexon</a> and <a href="http://www.mindark.com/">MindArk</a>, it's not only the best option, it's the future of online business models.<br /><br />A spokesperson for MindArk, maker of <a href="http://www.mindark.com/entropia-universe/"><em>Entropia Universe</em></a>, says that over $400 million in U.S. funds has changed hands in their game's four year lifespan. While some companies have strict rules against the interchange between real world money and virtual credits, there are plenty of others who swear it's the only way to go these days. A perfect example of this, as cited by <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/article/151891/game_economy_grows_with_micropayments.html">a PCworld article</a>, reminds us that the downloadable album from Aerosmith's <em>Guitar Hero</em> ventures have earned them more sales than all other album sales combined. <em>"Who would have thought ringtones, wallpaper screensavers, and non-game mobile entertainment would be a $250 million business?"</em>, adds Joseph Olin, president of the <a href="http://www.interactive.org/">Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/09/game-economy-grows-with-micropayments/">Game economy grows with micropayments</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 09 Oct 2008 11:00:00 EST. You see, while the UIGEA initially kicked around in 2006, the actual regulations that will <em>implement</em> it are just about to kick off.</p>
<p>Today, the House Financial Services Committee will be holding an emergency mark-up of some of this legislation. Why is it an emergency? Well, because while the whole thing is technically about 'gambling', the wording of the UIGEA isn't at all clear about what it actually is making unlawful, and when it comes to legislation and regulations, the words are everything. Words that are getting decided today.<br /></p>
<p>While you might already be under the impression that the UIGEA was already active, the fact is that businesses have just been jumping the gun and attempting to regulate based on some rather fuzzy wording what they might not be permitted to do.</p>
<p>Online games of chance? Well, sure. What about online games of skill? That's where you use your knowledge and abilities to make a profit in an online activity. That's where we get to the sticking point, because virtual environment economies may yet fall into that yawning abyss between words.</p>

<em>The MMO genre is more than World of Warcraft, Age of Conan, and Warhammer Online. Here's what's going on in the rest of the world.<br /></em><strong><br /><em>Nanoverse Online</em> lets you experience life an a micro scale</strong><br />Duplex Systems has announced its second MMO, <em><a href="http://www.nanoverse-online.com/">Nanoverse Online</a></em>, which takes place in a world "unique physics". While their website show photos of insects, the description of gameplay delineates more of a mechanically-oriented playerbase. "It is not the visual power that counts, but compelling and exciting gameplay," says Marko Dieckmann, Managing Director, Duplex Systems. "Nanoverse Online will bring the fun back to MMOs, a genre full of cliches, copied over and over again." There is no official release date for <em>Nanoverse Online</em>, but screenshots are expected to hit their website soon.<br /><strong><br />NDOORS partners with Nexon to bring <em>Atlantica Online</em> to Japan</strong><br />Nexon Japan has recently signed a publishing agreement with NDOORS to let Japanese players into the turn-based strategy world of <em><a href="http://atlantica.ndoorsgames.com/center/default.asp">Atlantica Online</a></em>. "We are fortunate and thrilled that <em>Atlantica</em>'s unique action and fun can be shared and enjoyed by many players throughout the world," said Cho Sung Won, NDOORS' CEO. With a player base of over one million users, <em>Atlantica Online</em> stands poised to make a huge showing with its new global presence.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/09/news-from-the-wider-mmo-world-september-9-2008/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>News From the Wider MMO World: September 9, 2008</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/09/news-from-the-wider-mmo-world-september-9-2008/">News From the Wider MMO World: September 9, 2008</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 09 Sep 2008 12:00:00 EST. <p>Where is it all going? With an MMOG you already know: Content updates, free and paid expansions, and so forth. A broadening and sometimes also a deepening of the game experience.</p>
<p>Virtual environments tend to be a bit hazier, largely supported by microtransactions they may include game-elements (like <em><a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com/">Entropia Universe</a></em>), sci-fantasy settings (like the upcoming <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blue-mars/">Blue Mars</a></em>), specific celebrity events (<em><a href="http://www.habbo.com/">Habbo</a></em>) or merchandise and marketing-focused experiences (<a href="http://www.vmtv.com/"><em>Virtual MTV</em></a>, <a href="http://www.barbiegirls.com/homeMtl.html"><em>Barbie Girls Online</em></a> and more).</p>
<p>In a very real sense the virtual environments industry is largely about focus. Targeting a market, wooing a demographic, and showing them where you are going to take them in the coming days.</p>
<p>Interesting, then, that the world's best-known virtual environment, Linden Lab's <a href="http://secondlife.com/"><em>Second Life</em></a> lacks the answers to fundamental questions, the answers to which directly impact every user and organization who participates (or who might participate in future). In fact, hardly anyone is asking those questions. Now isn't <em>that</em> peculiar?</p>

<p>Linden Lab has been granted another trademark on their hand-and-eye logo. This time for a credit card. Specifically, trademark registration 3378449 covers "<em>Online financial services, namely, offering a fictional-dollar-denominated credit card to charge online purchases</em>".</p>
<p>Of course, 'fictional-dollar-denominated' would mean <a href="http://secondlife.com/"><em>Second Life</em></a> Linden Dollars (L$). Exactly what sort of card this might be is uncertain. You may recall that in 2006, <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4953620.stm">MindArk released an ATM card for <em>Project Entropia</em></a> (now called <em><a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com/">Entropia Universe</a></em>) allowing access to Project Entropia Dollars (PED) and supported by the Versatel cash-card network.</p>
<p>There's no indication whether Linden Lab is (or was) planning a physical card, or some sort of non-physical card, how it would be backed or where it might be honored.</p>

<div align="left">For today's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/One-Shots/">One Shots</a>, we're bringing you a treat. This is a screenshot from a virtual universe we don't see very often at all, but is absolutely gorgeous. What title is this, you might ask? It's <a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com"><em>Entropia Universe</em></a>, developed and published by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/MindArk/">MindArk</a>. While the graphics are somewhat stylized, nobody can dispute that they're not lovely to look at. What else can we tell you? Well, according to Mike S. who sent this screenshot in, this is prior to the upgraded CryEngine2 graphics -- so it looks even better now, if you can imagine that! With lovely graphics, a free-to-play model, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/05/entropia-universe-bidding-war-leads-to-12-000-payout-for-newbie/">the ability to cash out items you find into real-world funds</a>, we're surprised we don't see this title more often. <br /><br />Do you have a screenshot from a world we haven't seen recently? Would you like to brag on your favorite game or world? We'd love to see your screenshots. All you have to do is email them to us here at oneshots AT massively.com along with a note telling us a bit about what's going on in the screenshot, your name and the name of the game. Then relax and enjoy the limelight! <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/">One Shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/#2704109"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/os864_eq2_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/#2700179"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/os863_fe_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/#2695825"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/os862_lotro_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/#2691569"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/os861_co_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/#2687909"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/os860_wow_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div>

<a href="http://www.entropiaforum.com/forums/selling/113737-letomie-dna-part.html"> How would you like to wake up and find that you made $12,000 overnight?</a> Seems like a dream, doesn't it? How would you like to have that $12,000 come from a single drop you found one day while farming in your favorite MMO? Now it seems even more like a dream.<br /><br />But this is the reality for <a href="http://www.entropiaforum.com/forums/members/timon%2Bmiles.html">Timon "Stuka" Miles</a>, a relatively new player to <a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Entropia Universe</span></a>, the game where the fictional currency is linked to real world money, akin to <a href="http://www.secondlife.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Second Life</span></a>. Stuka's fortune stems from a piece of DNA from the extinct "Letomie" monster -- an item that can resurrect the creature if all of it's DNA fragments are found inside of the game. After a brief placement on the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/entropia-universe/">Entropia Universe</a></em> forums, Stuka moved the auction to the official in-game auction house where it attracted the attention of Zachurm "Deathifier" Emegen, <a href="http://www.twarriors.com/ti/index.php">owner of the 26,000 real world dollar Treasure Island</a>, and Jon "NEVERDIE" Jacobs, <a href="http://www.space.com/entertainment/ap_051110_virtual_spacestation_ent.html">owner of the 100,000 real world dollar space station</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/05/entropia-universe-bidding-war-leads-to-12-000-payout-for-newbie/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Entropia Universe bidding war leads to $12,000 payout for newbie</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/05/entropia-universe-bidding-war-leads-to-12-000-payout-for-newbie/">Entropia Universe bidding war leads to $12,000 payout for newbie</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 05 Jun 2008 16:00:00 EST. What sets it apart from the other virtual worlds or MMOs out there? Well, <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm?GAME=31&amp;FEATURE=1962&amp;bhcp=1">according to one of <em>EU</em>'s Ambassadors</a>, Buzz Erik Lightyear, the game is about much more than simply playing a game. It's about playing a game that actually gives something back. "I'm not paying to play. I'm profiting from playing," he says.<br /><br />This real-world money system is not unique to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/entropia-universe">EU</a></em>, as it's seen in other virtual worlds, such as <a href="http://www.secondlife.com"><em>Second Life</em></a>. In most other online games, the exchange of in-game currency for real-world currency is against the terms of service. But <em>EU</em> is seen as more of a venture into the MMO space than <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life/">Second Life</a></em>, using skills, crafting and auction houses as you would in something like <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>WoW</em></a> or <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>LotRO</em></a>. In addition to this, <em>EU</em> is updated monthly, with word of new planets on the horizon and the new <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CryENGINE2">CryEngine2</a> platform being introduced soon.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/01/entropia-universe-ambassador-interview-why-play-eu/">Entropia Universe Ambassador interview: Why play EU?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 01 Jun 2008 15:30:00 EST. Microtransaction-based <a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com"><em>Entropia Universe</em></a> is set to expand into new markets, as developer/publisher <a href="http://www.mindark.com/">MindArk</a> has <a href="http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/2008/05/27/3466384.htm">announced</a> the completion of translations of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/entropia-universe"><em>Entropia</em></a> client into three new languages -- German, French, and Spanish. Previously, the virtual world was only accessible to English-speakers. <br /><br />The translations were performed by a company called <a href="http://www.lionbridge.com/lionbridge.htm">Lionbridge.</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mindark">MindArk</a> rep Frank Campbell said his company made the move to increase market penetration, address users' needs, and increase the company's credibility.<br /><br /><em>Entropia</em> is a Sci-Fi-themed virtual world. It's an unusual combination of MMO-style combat and crafting, and <a href="http://www.secondlife.com"><em>Second Life</em></a>-esque e-commerce. MindArk suggests to potential users that they can make money -- or even a living -- within the virtual world. Unsurprisingly, though, a substantial investment of real funds and time is required to become competitive.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/31/entropia-universe-learns-three-new-languages/">Entropia Universe learns three new languages</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 31 May 2008 19:00:00 EST. What's a virtual world? Why do we even call them virtual worlds when we could easily call them digital worlds, or just simply, worlds? This was just one of the many interesting topics discussed at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ion08">ION 08</a> this year in a panel entitled, "Redefining Virtual Worlds for Mass Markert Consumption" which is quite the mouthful. So lets put things in a more understandable -- and far more interesting -- perspective.<br /><br />Whether you're talking about <a href="http://www.clubpenguin.com/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Club Penguin</span></a>, <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.gaiaonline.com/">Gaia Online</a></span> or <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://secondlife.com/">Second Life</a></span> the truth of the mater is that these "worlds" are here to stay and they all share similarities -- social interaction. Not only are they here to stay, but they've only just begun to grow as a market. Which is why this panel was all the more interesting. The panel includes Erik Bethke (GoPets Ltd), John K. Bates (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mindark/">Mindark</a>/<a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Entropia-Universe/">Entropia Universe</a>), Craig Sherman (<span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Gaia-Online/">Gaia Online</a></span>), Rob Lanphier (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/linden-lab">Linden Lab</a>/<span style="font-style: italic;"><a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life">Second Life</a></span>) and was moderated by David Elchoness (<a href="http://www.associationofvirtualworlds.com/">Association of Virtual Worlds</a>).<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ion-08-game-conference-gallery/">ION 08: Game Conference gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ion-08-game-conference-gallery/#813930"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/ion08-general-deux-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ion-08-game-conference-gallery/#805988"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/ion08-smedley-keynote01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ion-08-game-conference-gallery/#804334"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/ion08-general-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ion-08-game-conference-gallery/#805993"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/ion08-smedley-keynote05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ion-08-game-conference-gallery/#807177"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/ion08-soe-tour-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/ion-08-virtual-worlds-for-the-masses/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>ION 08: Virtual worlds for the masses</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/ion-08-virtual-worlds-for-the-masses/">ION 08: Virtual worlds for the masses</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 14 May 2008 09:30:00 EST. <div align="left"><br />As it says in the press release: Reloaded Studios are a Seoul-based game company that seem to lack neither experience nor funding. Their first project is entitled <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-day"><span style="font-style: italic;">The Day,</span></a> and it aims to have a heavy emphasis on PvP combat plus a unique, immersive storyline involving parallel worlds and the destruction of <em>all humanity</em>.
