Casey Schreiner is hot on the heels of <a href="http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/tag/3321/The_MMO_Report.html">this past week's biggest news stories</a>, and we can't take our eyes off his scruffy beard as he does so. Seriously, it's like the fabric of the universe condensed down into beard form -- magnificent!<br />
<br />
Speaking of condensing things down, Casey begins with <a href="http://www.lotro.com/"><em>Lord of the Rings Online's</em></a> recent financial success as the game has <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/06/turbine-lotro-revenue-tripled-since-going-f2p/">tripled revenues since going free-to-play</a>. He then jumps on the bandwagon by promoting The MMO Report: Premium Section for the low, low price of $8.99 a month.<br />
<br />
Next up is the news of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/10/theres-a-conspiracy-afoot-funcom-and-ea-co-publishing-the-secr/">Funcom's deal with EA Partners to co-publish <em>The Secret World</em></a>, a deal which he considers a win/win for the two companies. And although Casey doesn't bubble with enthusiasm for <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>, he at least grudgingly gives the new title props for being the first game <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/11/dc-universe-online-launch-day-roundup/">to launch simultaneously on the PC and PS3</a>.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://www.darkdaysarecoming.com/"><em>The Secret World</em></a> went dark a few months ago -- no doubt to hatch nefarious, world-ending plots that involve brain leeches and alien zombies -- so it's good to see <a href="http://www.funcom.com/wsp/funcom/frontend.cgi?func=frontend.show&amp;template=home">Funcom's</a> sinister child poke its head up for some solid news. It turns out that Funcom's been involved in a conspiracy of sorts: <a href="http://www.funcom.com/wsp/funcom/frontend.cgi?func=publish.show&amp;func_id=1437&amp;table=CONTENT&amp;item=1004">The company has signed a pact with EA Partners</a> to co-publish <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world/"><em>The Secret World</em></a>. EA Partners is a division of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ea/">Electronic Arts</a> that co-publishes third-party games such as <a href="http://www.ea.com/games/crysis"><em>Crysis </em></a>and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/all-points-bulletin/"><em>APB's</em></a> first incarnation.<br />
<br />
Funcom CEO<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/trond-arne-aas/"> Trond Arne Aas</a> sees this as a way to propel the company's MMO to world domination: "<em>We are tremendously excited to be working with what is undoubtedly the world-leading games publisher for the past decade, and it is also a great testament to the fantastic work of our development team. The experience and the knowledge that Electronic Arts brings to the table will be instrumental in allowing us to realize the full potential of </em>The Secret World<em>."</em><br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/17/funcom-publishes-sharp-revenue-drop-for-q3/">Funcom's had a rocky few years with its finances</a>, which is why some doubted if <em>The Secret World</em> would ever make it to launch. Fortunately, this co-publishing deal seems to ensure that <em>TSW </em>will go the distance with two companies supporting it. We still have no word on the beta or release date, but this is at least a step toward the MMO seeing the light of day -- or the gloom of the night.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/10/theres-a-conspiracy-afoot-funcom-and-ea-co-publishing-the-secr/">There's a conspiracy afoot: Funcom and EA co-publishing The Secret World</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 10 Jan 2011 08:30:00 EST. Is <a href="http://www.apb.com"><em>All Points Bulletin</em></a> the "Next Big Thing" in MMOs? While I'm fully aware that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/RealtimeWorlds/">Realtime Worlds</a> doesn't specifically prefer to associate the game with this genre, it's very much a part of it -- but it also orbits the fringes of what we commonly refer to as a massively multiplayer online game.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.guildwars.com/"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>, <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/All-Points-Bulletin/"><em>All Points Bulletin</em></a> come from a different school of business models. These games hinge on the idea that most people dislike coughing up 15 bucks a month to keep playing their favorite title. Just look to the success of the original <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars/"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>, having a year ago <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/24/guild-wars-franchise-sells-6-million-copies/">passed six million copies sold</a>. That's a pretty great start for non-subscription MMOs, and because of that success we now have <em>GW's</em> sequel and <em>APB</em> on the way.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/01/the-digital-continuum-the-next-big-thing-in-mmos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: The 'Next Big Thing' in MMOs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/01/the-digital-continuum-the-next-big-thing-in-mmos/">The Digital Continuum: The 'Next Big Thing' in MMOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 01 Feb 2010 12:00:00 EST. Space, car chases and heroic fantasies lie in wait, plotting the demise of our nights and weekends. 2010 will soon be upon us and with it a whole new set of MMO releases, which means it's time to look at some of the most exciting ones. Some are obvious, while others are surprises even to me. Overall, however, this next year is going to be pretty crazy for fans of the genre.<br />
<br />
These are my five most exciting titles that the coming year has to offer, whether it wants to or not.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/09/the-digital-continuum-five-exciting-mmos-in-2010/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: Five exciting MMOs in 2010</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/09/the-digital-continuum-five-exciting-mmos-in-2010/">The Digital Continuum: Five exciting MMOs in 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 12:30:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.apb.com">All Points Bulletin's</a></em> 12th video podcast sees the conclusion of the Mark Rein walkthrough and an informative Q&amp;A with the game's design lead, EJ Moreland. Some of the questions are things we already knew but bore repeating, like that the game is going to be PC only for its first release.<br /><br />There's new information in there, too. Like the fact that a car you design cannot be stolen from you while driving it, unlike a car you steal from a pedestrian. There's also talk about player and clan housing as future additions to the game.<br /><br />We think the video podcasts are a great way to clear the air of any misconceptions while simultaneously giving the community a chance to meet the people designing the game they so very much want to play. So hopefully we'll be seeing more of these in the coming weeks leading up to wider beta and eventually, launch.<br /><br />Check out the video after the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/16/all-points-bulletin-podcast-12-delivers-community-qanda/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>All Points Bulletin podcast #12 delivers community Q&amp;A</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/16/all-points-bulletin-podcast-12-delivers-community-qanda/">All Points Bulletin podcast #12 delivers community Q&amp;A</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 13:00:00 EST. Before you wonder, we'll answer: The third <em><a href="http://www.apb.com">All Points Bulletin</a></em> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QssOFOj7AeE">official trailer</a> is pretty much all gameplay footage. We say pretty much, because there is a little dancing in it and, well, you'll just have to see for yourselves.<br /><br />What the trailer does with profound effectiveness is make you want to play the game much sooner than Spring 2010. We're not sure if it's the infectious song and its singer requesting that you give him both daft and punk, or if it's because there's a point in the video where three cars leap from stacked freight containers, onto a building and over into a street. Actually, it's probably the delicious combination of those two things.<br /><br />Check out the video after the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/18/latest-apb-trailer-shoots-drives-pops-and-locks-onto-your-scre/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Latest APB trailer shoots, drives, pops and locks onto your screen</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/18/latest-apb-trailer-shoots-drives-pops-and-locks-onto-your-scre/">Latest APB trailer shoots, drives, pops and locks onto your screen</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 18 Sep 2009 17:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.apb.com">All Points Bulletin</a></em> was representing at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-2009">PAX</a> and while the game wasn't playable I did manage to see a very cool PAX-only gameplay video presentation. Epic Games' Mark Rein and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Realtime-Worlds">Realtime Worlds'</a> community officer Chris Collins - you know, that dashing gentlemen in all those cool video podcasts - played a bunch of the game and edited it into a nicely narrated sample of what playing the game is like.<br /> <br />What I ended up seeing was a game that by all accounts looks very ready for launch, so I wasn't surprised to be told beta was "a few weeks" away and not months. And while that date is still a little ways off, most other attendees who saw the video seemed to agree that launch day couldn't come soon enough.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/07/pax-2009-massivelys-first-look-at-gameplay-in-all-points-bulle/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX 2009: Massively's first look at gameplay in All Points Bulletin</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/07/pax-2009-massivelys-first-look-at-gameplay-in-all-points-bulle/">PAX 2009: Massively's first look at gameplay in All Points Bulletin</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 07 Sep 2009 16:00:00 EST. This particular chunk of info came <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/08/14/no-money-no-problems-apb-is-sub-free/#more-15987">from the game's official FAQ</a>, which was recently updated. Well, it sounds like a reasonable price.<br /><br />Sure, we could say more about the news. We could discuss how <em><a href="http://www.guildwars.com/">Guild Wars</a></em> seems to have done amazingly well with their business model, and that it's surprising that nobody else has followed in their footsteps until now. Also, we could say how almost every aspect of this game breaks the standard MMO mold and that it's incredibly refreshing.<br /><br />These are all things we could say, but that really don't need to be said, because if you're reading this now we assume you're just as excited for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Realtime-Worlds">Realtime Worlds'</a> <em><a href="http://www.apb.com">All Points Bulletin</a></em> as we are -- and really, that's all that needs to be said.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/17/no-subscription-for-all-points-bulletin/">No subscription for All Points Bulletin</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 10:00:00 EST.
